Its time to get this started, but first I must ask you all to make some choices.

Your character is a female. Please choose a name for her.

Also, please choose a power and a combat focus. All the combat focus determines is your initial starting weapon and what you feel most comfortable with using. You can use any weapons provided, but you'll suffer penalties while using those you are unfamiliar with.
    (choices listed below)
    >> Brave New World (Quest) Supernova !FzAyW.Rdbg 03/14/10(Sun)14:03 No.8581619

    --- Group 2
Novice Pistol Proficiency (Semi-auto, machine pistols, and magnums)
Novice Rifle Proficiency (bolt action and semi-automatic)
    --- Group 3

    Flame
    -Active Ability:
    Can create and wield fire.
    -Passive Ability:
Has a slightly higher body temperature than normal – can last longer in cold weather with less optimal clothing but is easy to detect with thermal scanners.

    Ice
    -Active Ability:
Can remove heat from objects, causing them to freeze.
    -Passive Ability:
Has a slightly lower body temperature than normal – needs to wear thicker clothing than usual, but is harder to detect on thermal scanners.

    Water
    -Active Ability:
You can control water (obtaining it initially from an obvious source such as a lake or bucket) and wield it either offensively or defensively as long it remains in liquid form.
    -Passive Ability:
You can "sense" water sources around you, and can last longer without water than other people.

    Empath (touch)
    -Active Ability:
Initially can read and affect emotions in a person(s).
    -Passive Ability:
Can slightly sense the emotions of a person(s) while still a short distance away. (Can act as a "Danger Sense of sorts)

    Lightning
    -Active Ability:
Can control electricity and channel it through your body for a variety of effects.
    -Passive Ability:
The heightened electrical charge of the subject's body enables their muscles and nervous system to react faster than normal, but they overexert their body quicker than usual because of this.

Powers are wielded effectively by balancing three aspects: Range, Power, and Duration.

Range is how far away from yourself you can control your power. If you're wielding your powers from your hands or body, thus operating on physical contact, your range is Zero, and your powers will either be stronger or be wielded longer.

Power/Strength is the amount of energy you put into your wielding. High Energy uses such as melting through steel or snap-freezing someone's hand off will reduce your effective range and duration to compensate.

Duration is how long you can wield your power before needing to stop to recover mentally/physically. For example, needing to melt through a steel door may require you to have a sufficient Power level to Fire or Electricity, but you will also have to wield that power for a certain time to cut through the door.

    Intro:

No one remembers the side that lost. No one honors their dead. At least that is what my father would tell me as he drowned his sorrows with booze. He would drone on and on about the way it was before the Uprising, before the Invasion. He’d also tell me how much I looked like my mother, who passed away shortly after I was born – the changing weather had taken its toll on her, as well as the chaos of the Uprising. She always loved the Spring, he would say. Then another drink as he would stare into the fire that warmed us both. The eyes of a broken man take on whatever they see – like the glass eyes of a doll. And in those days, his eyes simply reflected the flames.

For me, it was always Winter that I loved. The white snow blanketed everything and turned our small, miserable town into an untouched little haven. And on that fateful night, the snow had fallen heavily upon our refuge.

I was unprepared for the drunken man that stumbled into our home, and the noise of his entrance jarred me awake from my seat at the fire. Father was out, and I had not barred the door as I might have been asleep when he would have arrived home. The man was as shabbily clothed as the rest of us, and very drunk. I rose from my seat to angrily yell at him to leave, along with a few more choice profanities – failing to notice the nearly empty bottle in his rather meaty looking hand. He raised his bottle; the thick brown glass glinted dully in the flickering light of the fire, and struck me across the face with it. It sent me tumbling to the floor, and he staggered forwards to strike me again. I kicked at his leg, and he lost his balance, falling forwards with his outstretched bludgeon. It struck the floor next to me hard, and the end of it shattered into brown shining shards.

I had wrapped myself in a blanket to sit by the fire earlier. Modesty was not part of our household, as it was simply my father and I. He had always called me his “wild child” when he was sober. This stranger, on the other hand, had no decency at all. My bare back was simply an artist’s canvas to him as I tried to crawl away without stepping on the jagged fragments around me. The first stroke of the bottle elevated my senses to an unnatural clarity, as I screamed in agony. The second burned a stripe down my naked skin as the leftover whiskey clinging to the jagged edges made sure that the wounds would not become infected. And a third time, and a fourth… The agony was etched into my mind, engraved as deeply as the wounds inflicted on me. And in this terrible moment, this primal torture, I awakened.

I felt something new bubbling up inside of me. A force of energy that embraced the very core of my being. I could manipulate it at will, and at that moment there was only one thing I desired to do.

I raised my hand in protest towards my unseen foe, and heard him gasp in surprise. I couldn't see what he was looking at, but I felt something tingling in my right hand. Something alive. And I bent it to my will. I don't know how, but it acted in concert with me.

The energy inside me released in a torrent, a sudden surge of energy. From my position on the floor I saw an impossibly bright light fill the room, and I felt some of that power inside me leave. The acrid smell of burning flesh filled my nose, and I turned warily around to face the door. There the man lay slumped, lifeless, blackened bits of skin evident where -something- had touched him. Something brutal. Vicious. And inside I knew it was something that -I- did. And I was happy.

I slowly rose to my feet and staggered back to my stool. The stripes upon my back were bleeding profusely, but I let them be. I faced the the fire and carefully poked it back to life. And then I cried.

It wasn't until much later that Father returned, and as he stepped through the doorway to take in the view of his scarred daughter, I turned to look at him. I saw the firelight flickering in his eyes as well as his sad expression. And I knew that he could see only the fire reflected in mine.

He buried the body early in the morning, deep in the forest. The fire had long since gone out as he gently treated my wounds, and he talked in that calm, quiet voice of his to me. "I saw the corpse. Listen to me now. The people around you will fear you for what you have. Don't show it to them if you can help it. Otherwise the Enforcers will come, and you'll become part of them. Whether you like it or not. You'll either join them or they will kill you. So hide it. Be cautious. Stay alive. Now I'll have to teach you to fend for yourself, so this will never happen again."

And so he taught me to fight, to strike to kill with my hands and to stab with a knife. To shed the blood of those set on shedding mine, to scar them as they scarred me. To fight to live. To live to fight. Such was my awakening to our world. Our own slice of the Democratic Republic of the North American Peoples.

It was a brave new world for me. But I had no choice but to face it.
    ---
Several years passed by, and after a while my Father left me one morning. He dressed warmly, and provided me with my own clothes. It was January, and bitterly cold. He gave me a small letter of introduction to an old friend of his in a larger town quite a distance away. He told me that if I so desired, this person would be able to take care of me further, but he must leave for now.

And so I found myself on a train for New Dunsworth, bundled in a thick wool coat with my hunter's knife hidden in its inner folds. I had some food as well as a meager amount of money, as was having a rather undisturbed trip for the most part.

*One moment while I set the scene*

The car I was in had few passengers in it, and thankfully they kept to themselves. I was positioned at a window seat in the rear of the train car, and was jerked from a rather peaceful slumber by the loud shouting of a bulky looking, thick bearded man at the front of the car. He wielded what appeared to be an old revolver and wastefully fired a shot into the roof as he yelled that the train was being robbed and for the passengers to cooperate and hand over their valuables.

I played along with the rest of the other passengers and acted frightened, steeling my nerves in-case the man came close enough to strike. Out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw something dark move quickly by the train, but it could have been a car for all that I knew. I dismissed it, as there were more pressing matters at hand. Quietly I pulled the window next to me all the way down, and the whistling wind outside quickly filled my immediate area, but luckily the train was noisy enough already that he didn't notice. I tucked my letter of introduction under the loose seat cushion I was sitting on, and looked back up at the lone man. The door behind him opened to reveal another man - slimmer and a tad taller than the old one in front of him. I could barely see that he was carrying a shotgun, and he said something to the man with the revolver, who merely nodded and began to approach the passengers at his side of the car.

We've had our powers for a while, so we should know if we can do this unnoticably:

    1. When the gunman approaches a seat, have the cushion give him a painful static shock to his hand as he brushes against it. Not anything injuring - just "ouch, that smarts".

    2. Then pull the gun out of his hand and turn it on him, and ask him for "Silence".

Sofia is very, very lucky. What a lucky coincidence, to have this opportunity. If we can do this stealthily, let's do this.

It creates some options. I was thinking "shove his shoulders through it and question him after we've gained the advantage", but that gets dicier when there's more than one robber. (Which I should have guessed!)

We could always climb out if we need a route three to get out of here. That might draw too much attention, though.

It doesn't look abnormal to other people - you'll merely be able to respond faster in combat or other situations. You won't be able to dodge bullets, but you could grab someone's arm before they can go for a weapon in their holster for example. Its like having highly trained reflexes as well as the mental ability to make the best use of them. Not simply relying on instinct all the time.

The train you're riding on is a rather old steam engine. Its hard to string power lines everywhere nowadays, so the more desolate parts of the Midwest where you live tend to have less electrical sources.

As you wait you feel your body being to tense as your muscles tighten, ready to spring into action. The rather sturdy man with the Revolver is only a few rows away from you now, moving closer. We should be carefull about using our powers, it have been clearly stated that they are not accepted in this world. Another thing, we don't know how to use a gun, so grabbing it and shooting the man with the shotgun is not the best course of action.

I vote we do not cause trouble now, giving them our food and money if that will leave us unscathed. After that, we could follow them, to kill and loot both when there's not so many witnesses. Just a suggestion though.

You respond by grabbing him by the thick collar of his overcoat and kicking out at his exposed ankle. Pulled off balance he falls over you, and you bring your knife up in your left hand to caress his adam's apple. He gives out a loud yell of surprise as you jerk him bodily to face the thin man with the Shotgun at the end of the car. His revolver clatters uselessly to the floor of the train car as you use him a shield while remaining in your rather cramped seating row.

The man with the Shotgun turns to face you angrily and raises his weapon. "Alright, drop him! I'm not afraid to put a hole through you! Charles be damned if he was enough of an idiot to get caught!" The other passengers quickly drop to the floor in their rows, taking cover behind the flimsy constructions.

Y'do realize that they're probably going to take everything and jump off the train onto waiting horses or cars, right? We let them take our stuff and we won't see it again unless we take it back before they leave, and if that happens there'll be witnesses. So we need to find a way to dispose of them that doesn't raise suspicion, like using a knife or martial prowess rather than shooting them with lightning.

"Hey Al, take it easy man, I messed up but the others will get her. Cool it man!" Charles frantically babbles at his compatriot, who continues to stare down his sights at you. The voice of a young woman screeches out in terror from the floor, yelling frantically that she doesn't want to die yet.

As if on cue, gunshots erupt from inside the car in front of you. You can hear the rapid -rat-a-tat- of a sub-machine gun being discharged, and then silence. Al curses, and begins to back towards the door nearest to him. "Bloodthirsty bastards probably started shooting the passengers. Fools." Charles comments with your knife against his throat.

The door behind Al opens with a loud sliding sound, and the force of the wind builds up within the car. You can't see who exactly opened the door, but the bloody metal point of a knife emerges from the chest of the man with the Shotgun. He looks down in surprise and slumps to the floor of the car, dead.

Revealed is a rather tall pale man with dark hair covered by a black military cap. The red double-headed eagle of your country is stamped upon it, gripping a large yellow star with its talons and crowned with four smaller yellow stars. Al's shotgun is much larger though, and the most you can do it wrap it in some spare cloth that you have. It has six rounds attached to it and one in the chamber, but you couldn't find any more. The revolver has only four rounds chambered but you were able to find 12 more on Charles' body. If you can't use the weapons you could probably hock them for cash anyway.

After all that stress you feel a bit drained and put your feet up on the seat in front of you as you lie back. The other passengers have shakily entered their seats once again, and a small child is crying noisily. You can hear some hushed whispering going on, but most of them choose to ignore you or shoot an angry glare your way.

You close your eyes and relax as the clattering of the train slowly lulls you to sleep. You don't awake until the screeching of the brakes informs you that you've reached New Dunsworth. Stretching, you rise from your seat and work your way onto the waiting platform. Farther down the platform you notice the crowd giving a trio of figures a wide berth. You squint at the three and can see the soldier from earlier walking briskly with them. The other two seem to be a rather wiry female with blond hair and a Chinese man of average build. All are dressed in black military uniforms and matching insignia.

As the passengers flow away from the train and several blue-suited policemen rush aboard you turn to a billboard that is nailed to a nearby pillar. Attached are a few posters informing you that the Democratic Republic wants -you- for military service. "Enlist today to protect your nation!" A large newspaper is tacked to the board as well as you come closer to read it...

"Excuse me sir, would you be able to give me directions to the home of a Mister Drake Hall? I need to get a hold of him."
The man in blue sighs deeply and rubs his temples, looking down at his feet with an annoyed expression. "Lots of people would like to meet Mr. Hall, miss. He just won't see every person that asks for him! He's too important!"

You stamp your foot impatiently at the officer, and pull out your letter and wave it at his face. "Look! I have a letter addressed to him, and its important that he gets it!" Just realized this makes me seem like a paranoid idiot. What I mean is, this guy seems like he doesn't want to have to bother with us. Now, Drake, being the wealthy guy he seemingly is, probably has his own security and office. So if the policeman really didn't want to bother with us, he could just give us directions and let Drake's personal security deal with us. But now he wants us to go with him. He's either very stupid or is planning something. To avoid raising suspicion, we can just tell him that we don't want to be a bother and ask one of the other officers, or the Enforcers, or even just some random schmuck off the street.

Sofia has long dirty blond hair and watery clear blue eyes. Her rather pale skin is mostly covered by a thick gray wool overcoat she is wearing, along with a matching gray furred ushanka (traditional Russian hat for winter weather). Her black boots are well worn and rather scuffed, having seen an extended time of usage. Though rather thin, the boots are lined with newspaper as makeshift insulation. Underneath her coat she has a shoulder sheath for her large hunting knife, as well as a hidden sheath in her boot for a thin skinning knife. If she uses her power, her irises glow a rather bright light blue. Her body build is a tad short, yet she is lithe and flexible due to her hand-to-hand training. In both arms she should be cradling a pump-shotgun that's wrapped in a slightly tattered blanket. The revolver she is carrying is holstered just under her left armpit.

“Thanks for your help, sir!” The policeman only grunts in reply, muttering about how he’s glad to get away from this bloodbath of a scene. He takes you down a rather busy main street, full of people bustling around in thick clothing. The snow this year doesn’t seem to be -that- heavy, and most of it has been cleared from the streets that you pass by. The officer eventually turns and heads up the steps into a rather large police station with you close behind him. Stopping by a rather busy receptionist desk, he leans over to ask them to connect a line to the Hall Manor. They comply, and soon the receptionist asks the officer for a message to relay. He merely jerks a thumb at you and replies, “Ask her, I’m just here for the ride.”

"Oh really..." The chomping continues for a moment, and you hear some unintelligible yelling in the background. Shortly, the chewing noise returns. "Sure, come on over. Ask any policeman over there to take you. He should do it without much complaint. We grease their pockets enough for -that-."

You wave the police officer over to you and inform him that he is to take you to the mansion directly. He sighs in dismay, but returns the phone to the receptionist, who waves goodbye and returns to her work. "Alright then, let me find us a vehicle. Need some solid chains on it. Ice should be solid enough with this weather." He instructs you to wait in front of the station, and shortly returns in a white painted jeep. It looks rather battered and would be a bumpy ride for sure, but you take note of the rather solid looking tires. This thing definitely isn't going to slide around.

You pull yourself into the passenger seat, and the officer hits the accelerator. With a lurch the vehicle starts forward and begins an arduous trip through traffic, dodging jaywalkers hap-hazardously. Insanity.

It takes some time, but eventually you break clear of the city and start flying through a rather flat road edged by snow-covered Evergreen trees. The snow hasn't been cleared as much here, but the vehicle plows through with heedless abandon. "We have to hit a high speed before we hit the lake!" The officer yells at you. “HOLD ON!” The road suddenly cuts out from beneath you, and for a moment you and the vehicle are airborne. Then gravity takes control of the situation as you are dropped heavily against an unyielding surface. The initial bump is a large one, but after that you notice that whatever you’re travelling on is almost perfectly flat. You look out to see a huge empty expanse of ice, surrounded by trees. In front of you is a small island as far as you can tell, with what seems to be a rather large building perched on it. You have little time to take in the sights, as a rather large rumbling sound seems to be coming from all around you, echoing in the vast expanse. “SHIT! Thought it was thick enough! PLEASE HOLD!” It dawns on you that the sheet of ice you’re riding upon might not be able to support your weight, which generally isn’t a good thing.

Thankfully you don’t plunge through the ice, and you can see the policeman finally relax once you reach solid ground. The mansion is a bit farther up past the shore, partially hidden by several large trees. The jeep stops with a lurch and you shakily exit the vehicle, relieved to be back on soil. The officer practically skips up the stairwell, which seems to be carved out of solid rock and adorned with four large statues at its corners. A Tiger, Lion, Jaguar and Leopard stare into nothingness with faces of stone. Whoever Drake is, he definitely has quite an air for the dramatic.

The officer reaches the top of the stairs and knocks heavily on the door before standing at attention. You slowly work your way up the steps to stand next to him, and are greeted by a rather tall man with graying hair. Dressed in a rather fine black suit, he bows and waves you both inside. “Please come in, our household is overjoyed to have guests. We heard that you were coming, and prepared accordingly. Unfortunately Master Hall will be unable to join you at this time, but we’d be happy to give you a tour while you wait.” Turning to the officer, he ushers him inside. “Please come in dear sir. Thank-you for making your way here in this season to bring us our courier – please enjoy some refreshments in the dining room to take the chill off. The once glum officer seems overjoyed to be invited inside. Two-faced jerk.

After a few moments, a rather tall maid approaches from the top of a wooden staircase just outside the lobby and works her way down. You can hear a slight crunching sound as she approaches, and she soon stops across from you and the Butler - the Officer having disappeared in the direction of what you take to be the dining hall. "This the chick who was on the phone?" She drags out in a southern drawl as she chews away at whatever is making that annoying noise. She swallows and reaches into her outfit's front pocket for some more, only to be stopped by the Butler who slaps her hand disapprovingly. "Quit it, Camille! Do your job for once." She rolls her eyes in response to his reprimand, and looks at you with mournful eyes. "Ol' Jeeves here is such a slave-driver get away while you still can!" "My name ISN'T 'Jeeves'! Its James! Use it!"

Camille pulls on your arm slightly to get you moving. "Come on now, let me show you the place." You follow her closely, your boots tracking water throughout the mansion. Camille stops once the both of you are out of the Butler's line of sight, and dips into her apron pocket to pull out some rock candy, which she gleefully pops into her mouth. You take a handful and pop it in your mouth, enjoying a rare taste of sugar and crunching away noisily. You smile and mumble your thanks, to which she merely smiles and nods.

The small moment of sharing over, she leads you to a rather large entrance of a room where loud clattering noises are coming from. She puts her forefinger against her lips and slowly makes as if to tiptoe into the room. You follow close by, only to be greeted by a rather large kitchen knife flying at your face.

"I told you to STAY OUT of my Kitchen Camille! I'm not going to restock the sugar again if you keep on poaching it!"

You back off quickly to avoid the flying knife but land rather hard on your rear on the tiled floor while doing so. Looking up, you see a rather worried looking chef staring nervously at you. "Are you alright, little miss? I didn't graze you, did I? Its just a joke with Camille, you see." He is nervously drying his hands on a rather immaculately clean apron, and walks up to you quickly while offering a hand.

"Way to spook the guest, Bernard. Now she won't ever want to eat your cooking." Camille drags out in her rather southern drawl.

He shoots a glare at Camille, who feigns an expression of innocence though you can clearly see her hand in some sort of jar.

"Oh, well it's OK...uh, I guess I'll see you later then? Bye." You quickly move after Camille and leave Bernard to banging pots and pans together in a sort of musical rage.

"Does...uh everyone here throw knives like that? I mean, I've never met a cook like that. I mean one that can you know, throw knives and nearly kill me...and cook. Who is Mr.Drake?" Camille stifles a laugh. "Well, Bernard can be a bit uptight sometimes, but he's rather harmless. As for Mr. Drake, well... He's a man of many talents. Don't be put off by his initial impression when you see him."

You pass through an extravagantly decorated dining hall and into what appears to be a rather comfortable living room. Several overstuffed chairs face a large fireplace, mounted upon which is a rather well detailed painting of a large gray wolf baring its teeth at a leaping white tiger. The Officer from earlier is seated quite comfortably in one of the chairs with a glass of liquor, apparently quite pleased with himself. The Butler is seated in the adjacent chair, and they both look up when you and Camille enter.

"Hey there, girlie! Looks like you were the real deal! Thanks a lot!" The Officer chortles in a slightly inebriated state. He motions with the glass towards the painting. "Just look at that beauty! Want to hear the story behind it?"

Camille takes another mouthful of her candy and beings to go back up the staircase she came down initially. She heads off to the right and pauses in front of a rather solid looking oak door. Rapping on it twice rather loudly, she steps back as it opens inwards.

A rather sturdy looking man appears in the doorway, wearing a rumpled white silk shirt and khaki pants. Several red stains are jarringly noticeable on his shirt, and he is holding a half-empty wine bottle in his right hand while using his left to support himself against the door-frame. His eyes, though slightly bloodshot, narrow when he notices you. "What do you want, Camille? Who is this?"

"I... This the courier that we said would be coming earlier, with the letter. I didn't catch her name, but..." She looks at you for assistance.

Yes, in a way you do slightly take on emotional characteristics akin to your elemental attribute. Yes you can transmit electricity from any part of your body, and metal is highly conductive. I don't think it will be that effective trying to channel it through your boots though. You could try to electrically ignite the gunpowder in someone's weapon, but you'd have to either do it while touching the weapon or be able to hit it with a ranged electrical attack.

    >What did our dad teach us about history?

The United States has been supplanted by the Democratic Republic of the North American People after a rather brutal Uprising of Anarchists that overthrew the government. When China intervened on the side of the Anarchists and placed a puppet Dictator in power, a massive insurgency began under the direction of four high ranking soldiers codenamed: Gray Wolf, Dingo, Golden Jackal, and the Coyote, and titled according to their area of combat expertise. In response to this, China sent in its own four soldiers of note (Tiger, Lion, Jaguar, and Leopard) to head a counter-insurgency campaign to stabilize its new puppet state. The resulting clash was devastating, but within an extremely brutal year the insurgency was worn down as the Chinese onslaught was unrelenting. Strangely enough, in what was to be a final battle with the insurgency, multiple nuclear warheads detonated along the East Coast and the resulting fallout spread out into the Central US. The detonations have been blamed on the insurgency as a last ditch effort to take as many of the opposition with them as they could, as after the event the four leaders were designated KIA.
