Lets take a break from 40K, MTG, D&D and lets talk board games.

I'm looking to build a collection of 5-6 of the best board games out there, and I want the input if you elegan/tg/entlemen.

Looking through BoardGameGeeks, I've picked out a bunch that I think'd appeal to my local bros. What are your favorite 5 board games, and why?

    List:
    Puerto Rico
    Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition
    Red Dragon Inn 1&2
    Race For The Galaxy
    Age of Steam
    The Princes of Florence
    Arkham Horror
    Settlers of Catan
    Amun Re
    Game of Thrones
    Stronghold
    Diplomacy
    Tide of Iron

Avoid games that take longer than two hours to play. That knocks out Twilight Imperium and Arkham Horror. Race for the Galaxy is a more elaborate version of Puerto Rico, so give it some thought.

    Settlers of Catan
Race for the Galaxy (expansions are pretty cool)
The rest I don't know much about. I heard Age of Steam is alright, though.

We're used to dedicating entire afternoons/evenings to a 40K game or two each week, or 4-5+ hour D&D sessions, so I think we'd be down for a longer game or two if they're -fun-. Though the long games might not get regular play, I agree!

Arkham Horror is always a fun game, but it's a bit of a set up.
Shadow Hunters is from Japan and really quick to set up and play (except for the role distribution)
    Dominon. Drafting: the Game.

In that case put Arkham Horror + 1 or 2 expansions back in. Twilight Imperium is a LONG game, an incredibly complicated version of Risk/Axis & Allies. Especially if you get the expansion so you don't have a bullshit game-ending "two victory points a turn" strat card.

    dominion

not technically a board game but close enough

also it has a great deal of variability, shitload of replayability, and is one of the few games that usually gets done in like 30 minutes.

nothing more annoying than hanging around with friends knowing that someone needs to leave in like an hour, preventing you guys from playing a long drawn out game.

Disagree. My friendgroup has had great fun with Twilight Imperium and Arkham Horror.

Depending if your friends like politics, like being assholes and are capable of focusing for long enough, you may want to take Twilight Imperium over Risk.

Arkham Horror is fine, it can go by pretty fast once you know what you're doing.

Don't have to get 'em though. They're not for everyone I guess.

    Boggle
    Carcasonne
    Munchkin
    Frag
    Scrabble
Anything that multiple people can play and get drunk and not be horrible at is a good way to go, for my group anyways.

    1. Settlers of Catan
A classic. No expansions needed, but they add something if you need a bigger game.

    2. Game of Thrones
Get the first expansion, and this is a great strategy game with no random element other than never knowing what the other players will do.

    3. Diplomacy
Troll or be trolled in another epic strategy game. Good for parties, but as I recall it takes quite a few people to have a decent game.

    4. Arkham Horror
I haven't actually played it, but from what I've read, I really really want to.

    5. Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition
It's big, it's complicated, and if you don't have the expansion, it can be fairly predictable. If you had Battlestar Galactica on the list, I would pick that instead. But TI is still a lot of fun after your group has learned it.

other games to add to your list: axis and allies, munchkin, and this really sweet game my mates and i've been playing lately called Tomb.

Ok, so having a good mix of long and short games sounds good.

Maybe Arkham Horror or Twilight Imperium for long games?

Race for the Galaxy and Settlers of Catan for medium length?

Dominion for a short game? Any other quick games like this? I've played Red Dragon Inn and a few others and enjoyed them.

More suggestions for each category would be awesome.

If your group is into 40k, then you might check out
Tannhäuser. It's got a pretty cool story, and it's a fun

it's a two player game; maybe the last expansion changed

    Not really in preference order

    1. Arkham Horror - the rules are somewhat...no they are intimidating but once one person gets it things start to move along nicely. It's a lot of fun and I look forward to playing every game. Have not really needed expansions yet

    2. Power Grid - I really had no idea what I was in for when I started playing for the first time. After the game progressed I began to see the genius of it. Its got building, a commodity market and an auction phase. So much strategy and thought needs to go into just about everything you do.

    3. Descent: Journeys into Darkness - I picked this up off eBay cause our group was aching for a good dungeon crawl. Only played two games so far and since I know the rules best only been the OverLord. Seems to be something that will have some staying power in our group.

    4. Last Night on Earth - a zombie game that really seems to bring that small town zombie fear to life. Great production value / cards. Fun to corner your friends and make them frustrated as they shamble in for the feast

    5. Stone Age - A hunter gatherer type game that has gotten a lot of play in our group. Each tribe has to go to work at tasks like hunting, tool working, the zug zug hut and resource harvesting to name a few.

We also play Ticket to Ride & Agricola. Still have Diplomacy, Puerto Rico and Race for the Galaxy to learn and try out

I've played Descent a few times myself, and discussed it at length on /tg/ before. People who have played it a lot seem to think that once the heroes get their first gold treasure chest, it becomes too hard for the OverLord to win.
The first expansion tries to fix this, and ends up making it too hard for the heroes. Then then next one makes it too easy again. And on and on; I forget how many expansions they have already.

In short, it's fun, but doesn't feel fair.

We just started playing Arkham a week or so ago. In that time, we attempted 4 games. Once you get the swing of it, the games go progressively faster.
    1) First time playing for all of us. 7 players. Face in rule-book every 3 minutes. Total time: 7 hours. We all died horribly.
    2) 4 players, 1 of which didn't play in the first game. 2 hours, 30 minutes, game ended by killing Yig.
    3) Same group, but we ran out of time to play an hour in.
    4) 4 players, again with 1 new player. 2 hours, victory through 6 elder signs.

Oh wow, a boardgame thread on /tg/? Is that even considered /tg/-related?

Anyway, I've gotten very much into boardgames recently, and have acquired several over the past year. I could definitely lay out some rankings out of what I got:

To summarize, my collection consists of:

    Arkham Horror
    Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
    Bang!
    Chaos in the Old World
    Dominion
    Runewars
    Settlers of Catan
    Small World
    Space Hulk 3e
    >> Anonymous 03/12/10(Fri)03:42 No.8541270
    >>8541258

    1) Chaos in the Old World - While having the Warhammer IP on it may be offputting to some, this game is such a blast to play as long as you enjoy being a dick to your friends. Each of the four Chaos gods you can play as are very different from eachother, having their own sets of units, card powers, and upgrades, so there's variety in that regard, as well as every game being different with a selection of Old World cards and initial token distribution across the board. No matter which god you're playing as, you can get a "just as planned" vibe going, and it's very rewarding when you do get away with your grand scheme. While the game is technically 3-4 players, I downright refuse to play with just three as I think that doesn't suit the spirit of the game.

    2) Small World - This game has a lot of things going for it: Easy to learn, not too long to play, and -very- adaptable for any number of players (2-5) thanks to multiple board sizes. Variety from match to match is ensured thanks to random combinations of races and special abilities, and when you get something like Flying Orcs or Pillaging Halfings, you know this game is pretty zany. Thanks to it's simplicity, it should be easy to get new players for it.

    3) Runewars - Although it may just be because of the new game smell, this is my pick as far as epic-length boardgames go. It's essentially a more refined fantasy version of Twilight Imperium with aspects of empire-building, war-waging, and hero-questing all rolled into one. Its season-based turn system is pretty neat, and it has you thinking several moves in advance to advance your armies and carve out your realm.
    >> Alamo !0GBrAvB1Bs 03/12/10(Fri)03:42 No.8541272
I have some serious problems with Race For the Galaxy, honestly. Every time I've played it it has been universally five people running to their goals with no impact on each other. Its technically possible, but there's practically no real way to impact another player's effectiveness. Puerto Rico does this slightly better but suffers from a similar problem, but handles it better in my opinion.

Arkham Horror is fantastic, just be prepared to drop some cash on several of the expansions. Kingsport Horror and Innsmouth Horror add a ton of new content and really help to balance out some of the flaws in the base game.

If you're up for a very loud and quick game, I recommend Pit personally.
    >> Anonymous 03/12/10(Fri)03:43 No.8541282
    >>8541270

    4) Dominion - As I pitch it to other people, "Dominion is a deck-building game. Your deck is your dominion, and you build it." Haven't played it that much, but it's new to me and easy to get people to play it, so it's up on my list for the time being.

    5) Bang! - The Spaghetti Western Shootout game. Although there is a lot of luck involved in getting the cards you need to win, this game is popular among my local gaming group, so it's up on my list simply for having more playtime in it than other games.
    >> Anonymous 03/12/10(Fri)03:45 No.8541322
Problem with Twilight Imperium is that ultimately, you need a really good group to enjoy the game. If you play with a bunch of assholes, you're really reduced to sitting there for about 8 hours waiting for the game to finish, which at that point you may as well say "fuck it" and just leave right then and there.

And a quick word about Arkham Horror:

I must admit that I somewhat bought it on a whim due to online recommendations (hell, even Tycho admitted to -always- recommending it just last week) as well as having no other co-op game in my collection. From my experience after a couple of plays, however, I can't say that I'm very pleased with it. To put it simply, it doesn't feel like you make things happen in this game, but rather things happen to you, often unpleasant things. Pretty much trying to do anything seems to be a risky gamble (unless you're the Professor), whether it's getting past a tough monster, trying to acquire Clues, or attempting to get through the Other World with your stockpile of Clues intact just so that you have the chance to seal a gate. For being a co-op game, there also doesn't seem to be that much interaction going on besides swapping items when occasionally players cross paths. For some odd reason, you're not even allowed to exchange Clues, so everyone has to scrounge up their own collection, however long that'll take, before gate-sealing can be attempted.

As an alternative, a co-op game I would recommend is Descent, which is essentially a D&D-style dungeon crawl made into a boardgame, complete with a variety of scenarios that you can even link together for a campaign with characters carrying over. Although I only played it once, I definitely had more fun with it than with Arkham Horror as I actually felt like I was working with my partners in accomplishing stuff and getting nicely rewarded for it.

Twilight Imperium with Shattered Empires: It is the king of board games. There is plenty of tactical geniusin', politics and diplomacy, and lastly my favorite the high dickery.

Runewars: It is TI-lite with a shorter playtime and a fantasy theme.

Infinite City: A really cool tile game where players vie for control of a city as they build it.

Descent: Journeys in the Dark: Kill the monsters and take their stuff, or be the monsters and kill the heroes. Either way it is a lot of fun.

Settlers of Catan: You can't go wrong with the classics.

With the above games you will never even think of picking up shit tier games like Risk and Monopoly ever again.

Here's mine in no particular order

Axis and Allies - quite possibly the best war game I've played. It does take a bit and the fact that the setting is already set in stone does turn me off a bit, but it is still a rather polished game of its type, IMO

Twilight Imperium - takes Axis and Allies and ramps it up to eleven, though not all of it is good. Random maps, fairly unique races and differing play styles are all plusses in my book, however balance can be an issue. My biggest beef isn't with the time but rather how some of the subsystems seem ill thought out, the political system especially. Still a favorite.

Arkham Asylum - running around as the Hobo of Justice fighting monsters dredged from the minds of Lovecraft is always great fun. It was sad that the game didn't survive my group breaking it five ways to Sunday. Haven't tried the expansions in full yet, though I hear they make things super hard.

Puerto Rico - possibly the only game of its type that I like, and I attribute it solely to the trade in little brown men to work in your plantations. Though I suspect its mostly due to the people I play with, really...

TI is not an eight hour game in most cases. It normally is a 3-5 hour game. About an hour/player is for when most of the players do not know how to play. Our group can get in a 4 player game in under 3 hours. Hell one time the game was pretty much decided in the first 45 mins, a half hour later it was over, that was a really weird game though.

If players start concentrate on the dickery, they are not concentrating on winning. Which means you can play to win in relative peace.

    FUCK YES BOARD GAMES THREAD
ill try to contribute some stuff that hasnt been gone over many times

-Android is a pretty sweet game that gets hilariously cutthroat towards the end.

-Mare Nostrum was a group favorite; Kinda like cold war militarily, with a fun and incredibly simple trading mechanic. (also, only takes about 2-3 hours)

-Civilization, if you can find it, is the best damn board game experience ever if you use the advanced rules and have friends willing to spend 2 days around a table (beer helps).

-Risk 2210 adds a lot to regular risk, and you can always just play regular risk with the set since it has the same map.

-Now, I've never played the PC game (which I bear an immense hatred of), but World of Warcraft the board game with no expansions is an incredibly fun 3-4 hours.

OP Here, I come back to this thread and find a -lot- of awesome sounding suggestions. I think I'm narrowing it down to something like this:

    1. Twilight Imperium or Battlestar Galactica: I'm a huge Civ4 fan on the PC, multiplayer 4x sounds hot and I love sci-fi. It's good to have an epic game once every few months or so, the length isn't too much of a turn-off.

    2. Game of Thrones or Diplomacy: Less luck-based, more social manipulation sounds like a fresh change from our standard fare.

    3. Arkham Horror or Descent: We might get enough cooperative gaming out of our Pen/Paper RPGs, but a cooperative game sounds nice for any collection.

    4. Puerto Rico or Dominion, quicker more card-based games that can be played while someone else is on a beer run, or when a long game won't fit in.

    5. Settlers of Catan or Carcassonne, because they're classics and a huge shift thematically from the other confrontational games. They're also good "family" games to round out a collection.

How does this sound, /tg/? Yes, I named 10 games, but I'll probably start with one from each category and consider filling out the rest later.

    1. Go with TI, you will not regret it. Also Battlestar Galactica is not anything like TI. It is a "traitor game" one player is the cylon and no one knows who it is.

    2. If you want to keep your friends don't make it Diplomacy. That game seems to be made for causing hard feelings.

    3. I liked Descent a lot more than Arkham Horror. But that really is a toss up.

    4. Dominion all the way. I love the hell out of that game. I plan getting the expansions for it ASAP.

    5. Carcassonne is better than Catan, but I have found Catan is easier to get into.

    > 2. Game of Thrones or Diplomacy: Less luck-based, more social manipulation sounds like a fresh change from our standard fare.
    Some warnings about Diplomacy:
    1. It was designed for seven people, although you could get by with less, maybe 5.
    2. The rules are not complicated, but the system doesn't handle people who don't get the rules very well. People without good ability to pick up rules and systems will have a hard time.
    3. It is a HARD game. You have to really work to win it.
    4. Long games.
    5. You will lose all your friends if you win.

The main problem is getting 7 people to play a long game. I haven't played a game of thrones, so I can't speak on that.

    > Puerto Rico or Dominion, quicker more card-based games that can be played while someone else is on a beer run, or when a long game won't fit in.
Puerto Rico is not a card game, and it is not fast. San Juan is the card game version of it, but San Juan is not very good.

Thanks for the corrections and advice!

    1. Twilight Imperium (Fuck yeah, 4x!)
    2. Game of Thrones (Screw your friend, lite)
    3. Arkham Horror (Just because we get enough dungeon crawl in D&D and I don't see myself getting these guys to play Cthulhu anytime soon)
    4. Dominion (Sounds like an awesome card game)
    5. Settlers of Catan (Family/Girlfriend/Etc Friendly, Classic)

With BSG and Puerto Rico being potential buys way down the line?

Is this a wish-list that would do any board-game loving neckbeard proud?

I'd strongly recommend "Junta" though I'm not sure if it's currently in print. Players are the corrupt government of a banana republic, the aim being to stash as much foreign aid money as possible into your Swiss bank account before fleeing the country when the revolution comes.

War on Terror - The Board Game is also fun, if you like very very black humour.

For anyone here that has played Diplomacy, how does it work? I have heard it is somewhat like games of Mafia, in that players have to judge what others do based on social interaction. I find this intriguing, as I tend to gravitate towards games that do this. It's why I find Poker such a thrilling game.

    How exactly does it work?

Each player starts with 3 or 4 armies, and you gain/lose armies based on territorial conquest.

Each turn, each player orders each army he controls once. Player moves are submitted in secret and resolved simultaneously.

Each army can do three things.
    1. Attack/Move a territory.
    2. Support another Army (you can support other players' armies).
    3. Do nothing (defend).

It is very hard to get anything done without support from other players, so you pretty much need to cooperate with someone. On the other hand, to cooperate with someone means telling him what your moves will be, which leaves you very vulnerable.

    Listen to this anon.

Settlers of catan is actually not a very good game. It's a big step up from monopoly and risk, but it's still not very good. People really only play it because it is famous, has good pr, is a classic, etc. It is good for getting people into the hobby though, and games can last less than an hour with experienced players.

Agricola = best game of all time. Has very, very little luck, huge skill, very fun. I will never tire of playing it.

Dominion: not techically a board game, but whatever, it's a board game in spirit. The two best parts of dominion are that every game you play is 100% unique, and games can take a very short amount of time. Plenty of expansions if you enjoy it (like my friends did). I went a whole summer just playing new dominion strategies in my head that I would try out that night.

Power grid: only played it around twice. It might be my next flame. Seems really cool, but since I've played it so little I'm not sure if it has staying power/replay value.

Bang: a fun little card game that will only be fun if your friends enjoy acting like outlaws/sheeiffs in the wild west.

Munchkin: not a very good game, only as good as you find end jokes funny

Game of thrones/diplomacy: long ass games that will lose you friends. Dickery at it's finest. Kind of like risk without nearly as much luck. I enjoy game of thrones more, but that's just me.

So, if you don't get agricola, I'll kill you. I also think that dominion is great; it's fun, it's short, it's new every time. Other than that, up to you brah

Forgot arkham horror. It's long as hell first of all. It's the only game here where the players are all on a team against the game itself, so it's rather different. Like bang, it's only as much fun as you let yourself get into it. Do you guys like roleplaying characters running scared from lovecraftian horrors? If yes, then you'll enjoy this.

And speaking of bang, I forgot to say that it is basically mafia in the wild west.

The poster above me explained diplomacy pretty well. It's a little, little bit like risk without the dice, and a much bigger emphasis on, what do you know, diplomacy (and treachery). Not like mafia.

Yes, absolutely. I would only consider diplomacy over game of thrones, just because diplomacy has such a bigger playerbase, even if I enjoy game of thrones more, but if you're just playing with buddies, then it isn't an issue. Awesome choices all around, glad /tg/ actually helped you.

Does nobody play Betrayal at House on the Hill? It's awesome. The players all work together exploring the haunted house, until at a random point one of 50 different missions begins, and one the players turns evil and the game becomes competitive. The atmosphere is just as good as Arkham Horror, and any given game of it only takes about an hour.

Since most of my favourite games have already been discussed, have another vote for WoT. Another one of these utterly bastardy "diplomatic" games, with plenty of secret note passing. The gameplay's pretty solid too. Plus, launching nukes is so satisfying. One nuke taking out potentially 4 or 5 regions and leaving one uninhabitable? Fuck yes.

One time, I managed to drop 3 nukes on a person who broke a treaty with me, pretty much knocking him straight into the Terrorist faction straight away. Felt good man.
    >> Anonymous 03/12/10(Fri)10:21 No.8544475
Twilight Imperium is a great game. Although with many new players it can take time. I have played 13h games where we started with 7 players. We did not finish. At 4 players who know the game it can be over in 3-4 hours, but less players mean less dimoplacy and politikks.

Race for the Galaxy is a decently fun filler card game.

Another vote for Dominon and/or Dominion Intrigue. You can vary gameplay alot and each game needs a new tactic.

If you're going to be buying a bunch of boardgames, I'd highly recommend buying from CoolStuffInc.com. You'll save roughly 30% of the regular price, and with orders over $100, which will certainly happen if you buy all the games you're looking into at once, you get free shipping.

Also, as far as games from Fantasy Flight go, you may want to preview them by going to their respective support pages and reading up on their rules and watching their introductory videos (if available).

    For Arkham Horror Twilight Imperium:

Pandemic is one of my fav board games, but I consider the expansion outbreak a must for it, got so much better when that came out. Its a co-op board game where you try to save the world from well a pandemic.

aquire is a much better monopoly-esk game about building companies, mergers and playing with stocks. Always a lot of fun.

Wings of war not a traditonal board game but a good amount of fun where you play out ww1 dog fighting. Recommend it over ww2

Bohnanza its a card game but a blast. You grow and sell beans. Sounds dull but its great espically if your friends have some good natured animosity.

    The Bad:

Settlers of Catan (luck, gets tedious after a while)
    Race For the Galaxy (solitaire)
Arkham Horror (committee game, you could play solo)
Descent (this game is so terrible, I don't know where to start)
Starcraft (clumsy, becomes very luck dependant)

The Good (in order of my current play preferance):

Cosmic Encounter (Awesome variety from 50 aliens in base game, interesting mechanics, flexible players 4-6 best)
Tigris and Euphrates (great game, best with 3)
Chaos in the Old World (great 4 player game)
Battlestar Galactica (Great backstabbing fun, can feel a little helpless as humans sometimes)
Vikings (solid game, best with 3)
    Pillars of the Earth (likewise)
Puerto Rico (solid game, not a fav)

Dune boardgame is also an excellent one, although you really do need a long time to play it much like Twilight Imperium. It has great diplomacy elements and a lot of bluffing. No current print, although FFG were making one but licencing issues caused them to re-theme it to Twilight Imperium, so the new TI game should be very similar to Dune. I put it in a seperate pile because it is simply impossible to play Dune in my group with the time we have.

    >So if I replace Settlers of Catan with Agricola would the list be fairly solid?

Maybe. It depends entirely on who you want play with.

Bear in mind when people are saying Catan isn't very good, they mean it gets old after 6 or 7 years. It's still God Tier if you're new to German games. Agricola is a superior game, but it can be very difficult for casualfags to grasp, and they might flee like timid woodland creatures from it's multiple boards and complex turn base mechanics.

If you're trying to introduce new people to the hobby, girls in particular, you should include Ticket to Ride. It's a mechanically simple game that still manages to be very deep.

OP Here, wake up to find the thread is still alive and /tg/ has a lot of bros.

I've played two games of Settlers, and I definitely like it. But I can also see what other people are saying about it growing old over time unless played sparingly. I've played one game of Twilight Imperium, though we stopped about 4 hours in. It had me pretty hooked.

I don't like the idea of a cooperative game where players are playing more in parallel than anything else, so I might bump Arkham horror to the bottom of the list, or as lower priority. Or maybe I'll wait to play it to see if it makes the list.

I'm generally looking for a good mix of games for a variety of situations. I love board games, and have played Amun Re, Princes of Florence and a handful of others. I'm staying away from Munchkin and the like because I have a feeling that humor-based games will grow old fast. My local group has no problem with complex rules, though I do have non-gamer friends, and a gal who enjoys more casual games.

Anyone have anything to say about Tide of Iron? I feel like a war-game should be in the collection. Likewise, any info about Stronghold? The premise sounds pretty hot, but I don't know how it plays.

Power Grid and Ticket to Ride would have good appeal to people that are more casual. PG being more slightly more complex than Ticket.

Arkham has complicated rules. Our first 3 games while they got faster had us going into the rules pretty often. Although now its very rare to have to refer to the rules. Our host downloaded flow charts for the game that made everything much easier to reference. Think it came from the BGG section on Arkham

This guys' resource page is great to have as a supplement to the rules. Always best to have more than one copy so multiple brains are working on the issue at the same time http://www.headlesshollow.com/freebies_games.html#des
