Hello /tg/. Some of you may recall my previous thread, in which I detailed a PC's outrageously stupid behavior in murdering a high level Paladin's family, and kidnapping his infant daughter. I asked for advice, and it was given. I listened, but as it turned out... The actions of my machiavellian player provided better results than I ever could.

    Here it is.

I will now relate to you the story of how these events concluded this weekend's three-day session.

The Player, forthwith to be referred to as The Cleric, stole the child with the intention of raising her as a companion and minion, and using her to cause said paladin to fall, eventually earning favor with his dark god by tricking a noble warrior into slaying his own daughter. His abduction was supposed to be airtight and untraceable, he expended huge amounts of wealth on wands of nondetection and items to make the girl impossible to trace, trusting in the assumption that the Paladin would not know his identity, and would only attempt to locate the girl.

Timely intervention by The Rogue, who had a bone to pick with the Cleric's brother (another player and a rival politician) caused one of the Cleric's assassins to be captured. However, the Cleric had made provisions for this possibility, and hired Red Mantis Assassins to slay his captured ally and destroy his corpse before he could be properly interrogated. This attempt succeeded, though the cost was tremendous. The Rogue loaned him huge quantities of money with which to execute this scheme. The Cleric was actually unaware of the Rogue's goals, as each player had a secret agenda chosen at the beginning of the game to add to the intrigue. By doing this, The Rogue made himself appear in The Cleric's eyes to be an ally, and thus was entrusted with his plans. The Cleric borrowed more and more money from The Rogue to construct his secret underground temple. He used the assassination publically to increase the influence of the Clergy in the city (clearly this would never have happened had the Law of Asmodeus been upheld properly!) and privately began preparing to use the fall of this (nearly) Epic Level Paladin to fuel his own rise to fiendish power. All the while, he pressed the Rogue to the bosom of his plans, as his most trusted retainer and ally.

The Rogue, for his part, was like an evil hybrid of Creed, The Illusive Man, and Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish. The synergy began to show. He left clues for the Paladin at The Cleric's behest, to try and lure him into slaughtering innocent cultists and clerics in the search for his daughter. The Rogue, however, ensured that the Paladin always had ample evidence to convict his victims of legitimate crimes before slaughtering them. The Cleric grew increasingly disturbed as the Paladin walked straight into his traps, and then back out the other side. His contacts in the clergy began to stop talking to him. Eventually, the Cleric confronted the Paladin on the grounds that he was not really a Paladin at all, though, of course, he was careful not to tip his hand that he was in fact responsible for the kidnapping. The Paladin informed him that Iomadae was understanding of his situation, and forgave him readily.

The Cleric didn't buy it, he needed to know what was going on. So he engineered his plan to come to fruition early, he figured that he had to act quickly before the Paladin could get a grip of himself.

So he set the Paladin up for a Fall Button. He filled his temple with guards, and prepared a devious trap, in which a Programmed Amnesia'd peasant, illusorily depicted as The Cleric himself, would meet the Paladin in a final room, wherein upon entering, the trap would create the sound of an infant girl falling down a pit. Such a pit was placed in the center of the room. The Cleric would watch from within an illusionary support column made out of Walls of Force, and essentially allow the Paladin to execute the innocent man in anger, before revealing himself, dropping the walls, catching the Paladin in six concentric Force Cages, and explaining to him the evil he committed in anger, etc. Hopefully, this would cause the Paladin to fall in despair, after which point the Cleric would cause the floor beneath him to vanish, dropping him into that very same pit, where he would be forced to watch, via Greater Image, The Cleric sacrifice his daughter to Asmodeus on an alter with his own sword.

The plan went as he had expected it to... Right up until the end. The Paladin slaughtered his way through the Cleric's guards and fiends, and made it into his meticulously crafted trap room, made by the brilliant and infinite loyal Rogue... The Paladin saw the mock-cleric, whilst the Real Cleric watched from his hiding place. He strode purposefully over the trapped flagstone, to trigger the sound...

But no scream came. Instead, there was a crackle of chained magic, and the dying wail of dispelled energies. The Cleric's illusions vanished, his walls of force ran out, and new ones sprung up in a rectangle, around him... And the Paladin. His bodydouble's illusion faded as well... And there was the Rogue, holding the Paladin's infant daughter. Dancing...

    To this music.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=go0UBNqQLlc

It took the Cleric a moment to realize what had happened He tried casting magic, but found that “someone” had placed an Antimagic field on the room as part of the trap. Only the forcewalls were uneffected. He tried ForceCage, but found it super-dispelled by a wand. There was a moment of silence. The Paladin stared at him until right about 0:55, at which point his legs started to move... As he (stone-faced) tap-danced his way forward, drawing his sword. At 1:20, he was right in front of the Cleric, who was screaming for mercy, making excuses, blaming the Rogue...

Listen to the bit after that. You'll understand what happened, and you'll what I felt.

The Cleric had already confessed to his crime. He was entirely, 100% guilty, and it was objectively confirmable. He was sentenced to death before the Paladin even knew what he looked like. The Rogue had provided him with such overwhelming evidence that the Cleric's own church condemned him to death as well. The Paladin wasn't there to save his daughter, the Paladin was there to carry out a sentence.

But nobody told the Cleric. And that's why it was beautiful.

The Rogue got what he wanted. He discredited that Cleric's entire bloodline, and kicked the Asmodean Clergy in the balls so hard they had to extradite one of their own. He won that campaign. Yes, D&D can be won, but only if you're that guy. Only if you dance to Vincent Price.

One thing: make sure that some of The Cleric's confiscated wealth was used to resurrect the paladin's dead wife.

Also, this story is something that is going to become an in-game legend. As in, bards will tell tales of it, peasants will talk of it, initiate clerics of Asmodeus will have it used as an object lesson in why you don't do stupid shit like this (with The Cleric's tortured soul being used as a visual aid).

And if your PCs ever again have reason to deal with the Lower Planes, they should stumble across The Cleric while they're down there.

Oh, and as a closing statement, the Rogue? He had a cleric Atone him to Lawful Good the night before the trap was sprung, and his memory surgically altered so that he wouldn't remember it. By his own belief, he had done all of this out of selfless altruism, and relayed as much to the Paladin. He is now winning at politics with the Paladin's full endorsement, and is a folk hero amongst the people of the land.

He has won in every way that matters, and he's a Good Guy.

No, seriously, this is the sort of shit that would get the local god of rogues to invest some of their divine power in you, because you're doing their work even better than they are.

Unless the local god is the Pathfinder version of Sehanine (and therefore female), in which case she'd probably just sire demigods with him. And personally escort him to his reward when he dies.

Except that the rogue is probably paying for it with the money that The Cleric's family was forced to give him to cover The Cleric's debts (even if he was convinced that he did it out of altruism, Law demands repayment of debts when it wouldn't violate the Good part of the alignment). I can see it now in my mind's eye. The Cleric finds himself in the cold and the dark. He knows that his death has found him, and that his plan has failed. But he was close. He was so, so close. He *had* him, surely The Dark Prince will understand. Surely... Why is it warm in here?

With a peal of infernal cackling, the Court of Asmodeus arises around him, as Ol' Nick himself guffaws on his knees, holding his sides, slamming one fist into the ground with tears of molten lead in his eyes. He looks up, sees his newest plaything, and his expression changes from hysterical laughter to that of a child on christmas.

On a similar note, when the Rogue finally meets his end, and passes from this realm to the next, he finds himself in a dark place. His memories return, and he knows. He knows suddenly, that he is guilty of a deception unimaginable. His soul is pure, but the taint of deception tears at his soul. He sees red light, as the Court of the Dark Prince rises around him. He looks up to silence. A horned figure staring down at him. The red goat extends a hand, and helps the beleaguered trickster to his feet. There is a sound in the distance, but the Rogue doesn't notice it, as Asmodeus leads him by the hand towards a great door, with rusted hinges and dust so thick on it that it cannot have ever been opened. The sound grows louder. Music? It is familiar, but he cannot quite place it.

"Goodbye, so soon, and wasn't that a crime..."

The door opens. White light. The Rogue sees an armored figure steps out. The Paladin, smiling knowingly. The music grows clear. The Rogue knows it well. There is a tapping, as Asmodeus's hooved feet begin to clop. The Paladin slowly sets into a jig. And, grinning, the Rogue dances with him, waving to the grinning Dark Prince as he goes, through that door, into an eternity of exultation and victory, where this display of just brilliance, of poetic greatness, is only the very first letter, of the most cursory of forewords on the first page of the book of his glory. A book that never ends.

If the real St. Jimmy were there, the Cleric would kill the simulacrum, think he was really dead, and then emerge to find a baneblade driven by balors where his pack horse was supposed to be.

The Cleric's player later expressed that he did this shit because he didn't like the character his Cleric had become, and wanted to see him get rich or die tryin', as it were. He took this staggering result as well as anybody.

I'm not sure if he loved it. He was a bit pissed off that the Rogue let him get so close to winning and then obliterated him. He just got over it quickly, because he had no investment in the character and (I think) secretly wanted the Paladin to get his daughter back.

    Goodbye so soon
    And isn't this a crime?
We know by now that time knows how to fly
    So here's goodbye so soon
    You'll find your separate way
With time so short I'll say so long
    And go
    So soon
    Goodbye

You followed me, I followed you
We were like each other's shadows for a while
Now as you see, this game is through
So although it hurts, I'll try to smile
As I say goodbye, so soon (0:55)
    and isn't this a crime?
You know by now that time knows how to fly
So here's goodbye (heehee) so soon
    You'll find your separate way
With time so short I'll say so long
    And go
    So soon
    Goodbye (1:25)
After which it breaks into a chorus of the same lyrics with jazz accompaniment. Breathtaking really.

Granted Powers: You are a master of fucking over people who though they were your allies. Bluff, Disguise, Trapmaking and Stealth are class skills.

His greatness transcends mere edition. You will see him dropping fools with sickhouse encounter powers as often as he destroys your Combat Maneuver Defense with his boot up your ass and calls it a grapple. You will see him sliding your ego one square directly up your ass as often as he forces you to make a Will Save or lose your dignity forever. You will see him in Faerun as well as Eberron, he thrives in DarkSun as well as Spelljammer.
Wherever there is a dipshit to be played for all he's worth,
or a mook that needs fleecing,
wherever there is injustice to be righted to the comical Wah-waah-waaah of a mutant trombone,
wherever there's wrong that needs writing to a jaunty tune, he'll be there.

He's always there. And he always will be. In His name, Gotchafool.

One of our PCs actually has his own song version of this after, when the party was captured and brain washed, he went toe-to-toe with an entire demonic garrison to track us down, dragged us into hiding in the vents, tied us up when we tried to turn on him and then spent 3 days getting together the spells he needed to break our brain fuck.
He then left us in the vents and went on to dive the demons out, BBEG escaped.
Later on, one of the PCs got caught again and, once again, brainwashed, this time more subtly, so he threw a Javlin through his friend, ressurected him and then debrain washed him.
Later again, demons in Neverwinter, he led a one man gurrilla battle against the demons while everyone else escaped. The sheer bad ass of this guy stopped it being cheesy and he did it all by the rules, he was also such a damn good ally, always helping the other PCs and a perfect example of NG.
Someone knocked on the song while we were playing at which point someone else went "John McClain and Zanadem...Remember when we first met Zanadem..."
    Yeah.
