>>8175256 After a day mostly taken up by rest and games with the children, you set off again, with Kel and Bem at your side. A quick hike through the woods takes you around the perimeter of the town, which is devoid of most of the life you've come to expect. Many animals have either migrated South or gone into hibernation, but the Subulgids, the birds that come North for their breeding season, can occasionally be spotted lingering around the treetops.
There is not much to hunt, but plenty of meat was gathered and stored in the ice cellars, enough to last for several months. Fortunately, nothing came up to threaten the town while you were away, so a fair amount of work got done. Sahl is thinking about tearing down some of the barns and building new ones, more in line with the pattern of the roads you're building.
With enormous curiosity, you set off toward Ellever, six days away. You've never been this way before, and neither has Kel, making it a learning experience. You spot some ruins along the way, long, crumbling pillars leaning toward each other in a circle, covered with snow. They're inscribed with fading runes, but none of you can read them. After a cursory examination you move on, reaching the near edge of the forest in a few more days.
You can see the town through the trees. Dozens of buildings, most of them stone, just sitting there, seemingly empty. Not a soul is about, though everything looks well-kept, and there are clear footprints around here, according to your resident tracker. It's a picture-perfect place, except for the lack of people. Hretmar whispers a word of warning to you. He hasn't been keeping his eyes here, but he doesn't like what he's seeing now. Bem wants to go on ahead and see if there's anybody around. |
