Well, that's that. You now have enough money to buy and sell entire towns. Not only that, but you got it by defending yourself and others from horrors of the deep. Good stuff.

There is enough Magma Steel to armor yourself and at least fifteen regular humans, with plenty left over for weapons, backup weapons, ceremonial weapons, and silverware.

All you need now is someone who can actually do something with it.

You'll need a box of scraps to entice him with.

There are a few industrious, genius-level people who like to hang out in cities. Many of them run the factories that churn out weapons and equipment for the army. Others also design said equipment. You have enough money to keep one of them occupied for several months.

Frankly, they don't know how to do it well. You've got plenty of books on the subject, and manuals as well, but it's simply not that easy to make a quality sword or breastplate without a large amount of practice. Jerith's telekinesis is invaluable for manipulating and shaping metal, but he is even less skilled than the actual smiths you have.

I think this is a potential opportunity that is being wasted now. If we go after a title first, we can start crazy projects that will attract the people we are looking for to the town.

We will pose a lot less risks doing this stuff if we have a title, and the sooner we get a title, the less of a chance this town will suffer because of us hiding out here. We had one close call, who knows when we will have another?

Your magic is primarily of the mind. Though a slight physical movement can help you focus, it is not usually necessary. When shaping the elements, movement helps a great deal, because what you're doing is basically sculpting. Again, though, it's not required.

We already have done good deeds. We helped dreamwood a shit ton, and we have killed the trolls raiding a nearby town (I think will go over well, seeing how this kingdom was founded by defeating a troll army). With those good deeds, and with the reputation that the twins got for serving in the military, I think we would be safe if we hired an escort to the capital.

We have more than enough money to pay for our safety to the capital and buy a title. Once we get a title, we can do a whole lot more for this town than we could ever do now.

It has been one month. It is now the thirteenth month of the year, nearing the end. Taxes will soon be due, but this time, there is no danger of anyone wanting for anything, thanks to you. Bem's travels have brought him word from the garrison, conveyed by a bored infantryman with loose lips. According to him, the detachment from the Eastern fortress found the entire town sinking into the earth, with a steadily widening pit in the center, opened to the fiery depths. Fortunately, the population of Ellever made it to Strade mostly intact, but the soldiers were not so lucky.

Not only were there Demons about, but there were other horrors coming up out of the crust, some of them even more dangerous and deadly than the Demons themselves. The first batch of men was wiped out, charred to the ground, but reinforcements brought mages, among them experts in the sphere of water. Hot rock, when cooled rapidly, can be induced to split, and in this manner, no less than seven (small) magma elementals were turned back. The pit, under constant guard, was eventually sealed by the Brothers of Gemessel, an earth god. By that time, however, almost all of the town had sunk into the crust.

The more paranoid officers are calling it a 'nightmarish new weapon' deployed by the Forusians to force Perin to waste resources and men fighting an internal battle. The neutral ones think it's a practical joke by the fire gods or a simple result of overpopulation in the underworld. One of the optimists calls it a blessing, sent by an unknown to bless Perin with gems and armor. In any case, the wealth gained from the slaying of Demons and others far outweighs the costs in manpower and material of sealing the breach.

Bem has, as he assured you he would, secured an order for several oversized pieces of Magma Steel armor, to be placed on a rack that sits just inside the grand hall of his mansion, to impress lesser nobles when he throws parties. He was not questioned, because he had the money to back up his story. Also, because he was quite obviously eccentric and possibly mad. You'll have a breastplate, helm, and gauntlets by next year. The rest will probably be coming along sometime in the second or third month.

In addition, the two smiths Sahl told you about were found to have departed some time before Bem reached Fain, but in their place he discovered a rather gruff, large man who claimed to have been a weaponcaster for the army, back when the war was exciting. His skills were up to par, judging by Bem's expression, though he had already gotten settled and was averse to leaving again so soon. He agreed to come around later, once he'd finished all of his immediate jobs.

From Grennet comes the Trollhide you ordered, eight sets, all cured. It makes fine leather armor, and is flexible enough to absorb impacts with less 'bang' than solid plate. The Troll sinew has given you several bowstrings, all of which are above and beyond what you were using before. The bow itself is still weak, but there is no longer a large danger of the string snapping. Most of your time has been spent on the bunker, which is now large enough to support triple the town's current population, and is the primary hiding place for your dragon's hoard of gems. Aside from that, the forge has been expanded again in anticipation of additional smiths, and there are five more standard houses.

The very least of the minor nobles rule a single town from a manor on the property. They pay tribute in coin, resources, and men, occasionally submitting their daughters to a political marriage, and in return are left mostly alone, following the orders of the local Governor of course. All nobles, no matter their status, are entitled to protection from the Lord, which generally means a personal guard and the ability to call reinforcements from the nearest garrison. In addition, all nobles can vote, while most peasants cannot.

Well, you guys want to adventure more right? Well, when we go out and adventure the town is open to all sorts of nasty things happening. And if we get hurt while adventuring, the town is vulnerable that much longer while we recuperate.

We took this town from being a run down place no one would bother with, and made it prosperous. Something that people will envy. And so far, we are the only added protection. Gaining a title will go a long ways to the town being protected more (from random stuff and from the crown). And gaining a title will allow us to adventure more and claim the fame from what we do.

Can we ask the twins and Bem about the various governing nobles military leaders in the kingdom, are any of them open minded enough to work with a frost giant and smart enough not to waste us on a suicide mission.

We could gain immediate citizenship simply by volunteering to join the army and maybe offering a bribe as well. With a good diplomacy check or a sack full of gems we should be able to negotiate that some of Dreamwood's conscripts be returned home to protect the town in our absence. This would allow the villagers to start accepting new citizens and even tourists without risking our discovery. We've taught them as much as we can, and the risk of sheltering us almost outweighs the benefits of our protection. Also, military service offers us a chance to see more of the world and spread our knowledge to new people.

Proposal: Get armor for ourselves and the village "militia," round out the town's defenses to slow or repel a small demon attack in our absence, find a military recruiter with an open mind, and have adventures.

Once you get into plantation country, there is no cover, and you will be spotted unless you're invisible or look entirely human (Hretmar can actually turn you invisible AND polymorph you, but the latter carries large risks and neither lasts for long), which would undoubtedly lead to people trying to kill you. Dragging a mile-long chain of adventurers, soldiers, and townspeople with torches with you would not make the best impression.

There are nobles who are much like Bem's 'alter ego', eccentric and always looking for something new to try. None of them live around here, but if you went looking, you could probably find a crazy old man with enough money and class to make you a knight without being questioned.

As for the military, with the war going how it has, there is little chance of your talents being wasted, unless you fall under the command of a hard-line 'humanity superior' crackpot. Willingly walking into war, though, would put you out of touch with Dreamwood for years, despite Hretmar's link. He can funnel information to you through the library, but speaking back is too inefficient and draining to convey your orders/thoughts over distance.

We wouldn't even need power plants, since lightning elementals would provide it. Or steam power. Things like planes and trains, cars and automobiles. Any of the town elders could acquire title with the appropriate compensation paid to the Lord of Perin. Now that the military has seen a Demon incursion, the explanation for how the gems were gotten is extremely plausible. They could, indeed, knight you, and request an escort.

We'll need blacksmiths/artificers... a lot of them. Not to mention mines for more common industrial metals. Are there the appropriate ores in this region?

    >having the people we would want to openly interact with think of us in a positive light is stupid
You still haven't addressed the fact that EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO WE INTERACT WITH (with a couple of minor exceptions) HAS ASSUMED THAT WE WANT TO EAT THEM. Until we have enough of a reputation to act openly, buying a title is either doomed to outright failure or will only turn us into "that Frost Giant who bribed the Lord for a title."

The youngest elder, unless the title is heritable. In which case, dosen't matter.

This seems like a great idea. I think it would go over better with the town if they got one of their own people a title instead of us. We could always pursue a title later with this option.

Title passes to the firstborn. Lark is not married and has no children. Sahl was married and has three children, all boys, all drafted. Bem is currently married, has a boy in the army, and a girl, who is married to one of the farmers and has her own kids.

I'd suggest to continue improving the town and ourself until the armour is finished.
Afterwards, we continue adventuring until we have as much of an reputation that at least the local garrison wouldn't try to kill us at first sight.
When this is the case, we ask Hretmar to cloak us and set off to gain our title.

It is the fourteenth of the last month. Tax day was three days ago, and Sahl and Lark, along with some of the farmers, loaded up all that they were required to give in the carts, took them to the tax office in Fain, and got back without a hitch. It really wasn't all that much, compared to the massive harvest and the incredible amount of meat you and the hunters have gathered, but back when things were not so good, it was a sentence to misery.

You and Jerith have collaborated on your studies, him focusing on luck (or probability alteration) and you on healing. There is much you can learn from each other, even though he's the more experienced mage by far. Then again, you have a god of cold who you can talk to like a roommate, so you might have a slight advantage there. It is now possible for the adventurer to make a die come up six about half the time, which doesn't seem like much, until you remember that the difference between being killed instantly by an arrow and flinching from a near-miss can be a millimeter or two. You can heal a minor cut without fainting from overexertion, but it is nothing at all like shaping the elements. The complexity of it gives you headaches.

Your fireproof suit, which you will probably be wearing under your Magma Steel armor, is complete, providing full protection from heat and fire over the majority of your body, save for a space for you to see through. It looks ridiculous, but it's meant to save your life, not make you pretty.

The weaponcaster, Dreman, will be finished with his projects around next week, freeing him for a visit to your humble abode and possible employment arming the villagers for your presumed absence. To round everything out, Bem's been selling syrup and alcohol to an innkeeper in Fain, making a fair amount of profit and gaining valuable knowledge on how to make the booze taste less awful. The end of the year is also coming up, so you better be ready for a celebration. It's sure to be something you won't want to miss.
