IF OUR DOM HAS A CANNON ON IT, DOES THAT MEAN THAT IT'S A GUN-DOM? [EXPLODES]

You are David Lister, Lieutenant in the Principality of Zeon and ace Mobile Suit pilot.
Together with your band of merry men, and women, and women who dress like men, you've spent the last 4 episodes mounting an attack on Federal HQ in Jaburo.

In our last episode, you safely saw to the retreat of friendly MS forces and escaped from Jaburo base by air - with Jaburo's returning air forces in hot pursuit.

You are currently mounted in your largely undamaged MS-09 Dom inside your mothership, the Zanzibar Kai class Space Cruiser: Outer Heaven, along with your wingmen, Jolyne Brande, Hovis Goddard and Elaine "Ruubens" Arronax.
Your other wingmen Zolomon Ringo and Calvin Hobart your Recon specialist however are already outside on Dodai MS-Carrier planes.

(Note: The Outer Heaven DOES NOT have your MS-06F2's inside, since you opted to take the Dom's, they were taken back in the Fat Uncle.)

Um... The main thing is to gtfo.

Since we're on our Doms rather than Zaku F2s, I'm guessing a Dodai flight is out of the question other than for Zolomon and his Gouf?

So, load up with Ack ack, replace the Listers and Ruubens Doms normal armaments with magella top canons with AA loaded in, and um... lean out of the side of the Ship?

    >The rino is damn good at anti air, can't we open that bay and have hovis missile and machine gun spam?

In theory yes. However, it's not exactly secure up there, any extreme evasive maneouvers and the thing could tumble off. You'd either have to try and secure it on somehow (a tricky job in itself) or just risk it.

Parachutes are an option but they'll take time to fit as well.

    >Can we fire at the enemy from the rear hangar door? Assuming the Outer Heaven has one? Since we can't ride a Dodai.

It's a ventral bay, which I've been taking to mean a door on the roof, this is also where the MA pod opens up to.
If that isn't what ventral means then, tough, the MS bay for this one opens up top on this ship.

    About this much.

Well i say we secure that Rino, Might take some time but that is simply the best anti air weapon any of us have.

Tell the other gaws to open the doors and have any MS able to point a gun start shooting, we can climb on top of our ship

time to DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA the federation. We may not kill them all, we may lose some people, but that seems to be the best bet

of course get the dopps out and any suit in good condition on one of those flying platform things too.

Oh, well that's good too, since we can just santd on the MA pad near Hovis. If they manage to close with us, we can turn and fire at them from other directions, rather than being restricted to firing from the rear of the craft.

As for the time it would take to secure the Rhino and ourselves... well, we don't have anything better to do until they get in range, so let's do it.

    NOTES ON DOM ARMAMENTS:

The Dom was built around compensating for the recoil of the 330mm Bazooka, however it's a finicky bird. As a result dual weilding will unbalance it, also, the 180mm Magella is above the maximum tolerances of it's recoil compensation. With the Hoverjets shut down you can fire it without blowing yourself off the ship, but it WILL be knocking you about, and the suit will struggle to compensate.

120mm Zaku Machine Guns (Complete with GL attatchment) are an option, as are similarily kitted 90mm.

Zolomon and Calvin are already out and on Dodais. One can assume a fair number of surviving Zaku's and Goufs are similarily mounted (where Dodai numbers allow)

To kinda clean up my post:

    1) secure Rino
    2) best pilots in best suits, get them in the air on Dodais
    3) all junked suits get pilots too, open bay doors, spray and pray (this is all ships, not just ours)
    >> Anonymous 02/13/10(Sat)12:29 No.8065207
    How's this:

Get up top with a bazooka. Fire until empty. Repeat with all the bazooka shots we have, then switch to MG.
    >> Anonymous 02/13/10(Sat)12:30 No.8065211
If they're out of range, switch to El Muerto Gigante, load up with twin 120mms or twin 90mms with lots of reloads, and hop on a Dodai. Also, we do NOT want to use the Rhino unless necessary. If Hovis takes a spill he and the Rhino are essentially either dead or captured. No way we can really pick them up.

Wait a second, Zaku J types can handle those without much of a problem, this seems odd that our heavy MS can't deal with recoil smaller and less sturdy models can.

If you re-phrased the problem to be due to the platform we are standing on fine but Magellas should be fine.

You order the Engineers to try and secure the Rhino to the top of the Outer Heaven and have it act a flak turret, you, Jolyne and Ruubens all exit to help out.

As you leave the hangar, you see that the incoming swarm of enemy fighters are now close enough to discern them as such.

"Damn sir! We've got hold all of those off until we reach Costa Rica!?" Ruubens asks.

"Until their fuel runs out more likely, if that group just came back from a combat mission in Cuba they've GOT to be getting close to bingo fuel already." Jolyne points out.

"Assuming they haven't already and just don't give a damn." Hovis dourly remarks as Ruubens and Jolyen begin securing him to the decks with welding plates and heavy steel weave straps.

The enemy are getting closer, you pick up your Bazooka, you see Zolomon on his Dodai give you the thumbs up. before jinking away.

Then they're in range of the Outer Heavens Beam Cannons, and it starts firing.

Zaku's need to secure themselves first to fire those as well, keep in mind that the Zanzibar's top hull isn't entirely flat so it wouldn't be a good idea.
Also when using the hoverjets, they can't compensate for the 180mm's recoil and you'd end up spinning around.

The Dom cannon uses a special backpack to compensate for the backpack cannons, but it couldn't use the Maggie gun as well.

Alright then. As I stated a little earlier, make sure Jol's K2 Cannon's get flak rounds in 'em. Provided they can accept those munitions, of course. Forget about the Magella top if recoil is that much of a pain in the ass, just have her use her 'zook 'till it runs dry, then make sure to have a 120mm ready for her, as well as reloads for her cannons. Also make sure the MS Deck Crew understands that the faster they reload those cannons, the more of us survive.

Have Calvin pinpoint the first squadron of heavy fighters, Saberfish, preferably, to get within range, and have Apsalus apply its Beam Cannon. If they are in smaller groups, have her rake with it to take out as many as possible. If there are no heavy fighters, have Calvin decide on the most dangerous target. Core boosters don't get developed until later. Luckily.

    >What's the status on the Apsalus? Did it bail out already?

The Aspalus should still be around, though you can't currently see it.
You see the Beam Cannons from the Outer Heaven stab into the heart of the enemy formation, you catch the blossom of explosions, but it's like trying to take down a bear with a sewing needle.

"Get ready everyone, here they come!"

The first wave of attackers are Saberfish heavy fighters. The Gaw's struggle to dodge their opening salvo without breaking formation, some manage it, others are hit by missiles. None of them cause serious damage but it's early days.
You begin to return fire. You manage to score two kills with your Bazooka, whilst heavy fire from Hovis and Jolyne deal with several others. You don't see Rubens kill any, but at one point she manages to bling a Saberfish that passes to close with her Spray Gun. It spins out of control allowing Hovis to finish it off with his arm guns.
It's a similar story across the formation, Dopps are keeping the Saberfish off balance whilst the Gaws Flak Turrets and Dodai riders finish them off.
The first wave is finished without casualties, although a Gaw is showing signs of taking a pounding.

"That Gaw on the left, what's its status?" You ask.

"Some holes in their armour and crew compartments, but nothing it needs to keep flying."

The second wave is fast arpproaching, it looks to be twice the size of the first one, but mostly comprised of Fly Manta's.

I suggested this earlier, but it looks like it got lost in the shuffle. Have Hovis relay targeting data to the Apsalus, and have him target for its Beam Cannon. Also, have whoever is piloting the Apsalus rake rather than fire straight down their throats. That should be an effective way to deal with a chunk of those Fly Manta's. Have the Heaven fire for effect as well.

Switch to our MG against the Manta's. Save the 'zook for something worth using it on. Make sure we have plenty of spare ammo at the ready, and be prepared to target anything that gets through the Apsalus' barrage.

    >Switch to our MG against the Manta's. Save the 'zook for something worth using it on. Make sure we have plenty of spare ammo at the ready, and be prepared to target anything that gets through the Apsalus' barrage.

You move inside to get a 120mm for yourself and Elaine, after ordering the rest of the squad to stay on overwatch.
After exchanging your weapons and taking some ammo as well, you return topside to see that the enemy have arrived. You waste no time in firing a burst off at a pair of Fly-Manta's who are too close to each other, catching them both.

You then give your spare 120mm to Ruubens whilst you return to your position.

You at last spot the Experimental unit that was aiding you back in the Jungle as it swings behind the group and rakes it's Particle Cannon into the mass of fighters. Explosions blossom along the line.
You fire at the enemies currently surrounding the Gaws, catching another three. You see Zolomon casually take out some with his Gatling Shield when he passes by.
Taking out this wave takes about 10 minutes. The Dopps still haven't taken any losses (the fighters must be concentrating on the Gaws) but a couple of Zaku's on Dodais took bad hits and had to RTB.

The second wave, gives way to the third wave, this time a mix of different units, Saberfish, Fly Manta's even some old FF7 Tin-Cod interceptors.

Now the battle get's ugly, the Interceptors are actively engaging the Dopp fighters whilst the Fly-Mantas are taking on the Gaws with swarm tactics. The Saberfish in the meantime are engaging target's of oppourtunity - Gaw, Dopp, Mobile Suit, whoever.
You see the Aspalus make another couple of passes before it seems to shroud itself in a cloud of steam.

The unidentified fighter streaks in towards a nearby Gaw, both it's guns fire a cavalcade of bullets at it and sparks and flames erupts from where the Gaw's body meets the wing.
A plume of fire erupts from the shredded superstructure along with sparks and the wing seems to bend upwards, though luckily it doesn't snap off.

    Yeah, that's what I thought.

As for orders, move Zol to engage him, and herd him back towards the Heaven, preferably into Hovis and Jolyne's fire patterns. Again transmit the general warning to our forces. Grab our Zook. Apply said 'zook.

If we focus our fire on him it'll just leave the rest of the attack wave to do as it pleases. Take out the Saberfish, Fly Mantas and Tin Cods, THEN concentrate all available firepower on him.

Hmm, tough one. There doesn't seem to be too much we can do about that guy right now that we aren't doing (IE, shooting at him a lot) all things considered. I'm gonna say the best thing we can do right now is move the Outer Heaven in closer to the Gaws, and get everything tightened up to improve AA coverage. Ideally we want to prevent him from being able to zip in and out of our formation as he pleases. Not really sure if we can though, since he was originally an ace Saberfish pilot.

Also, if we can give the damaged Gaw some time, could repiars be effected? If not, any way we can get the personnel out before it crashes?

You have Calvin highlight the threat and have the force target it before it can take out another Gaw. Bullets whizz around the G-Armour as it dodges and weaves away from the enemy fire.
Up until the point that Zolomon manages to tag the enemy with his Heat Rod.

The plane dives harshly pulling Zolomon clean off his Dodai, Zolomon twists about as he tries to grapple onto the plane, whilst Bandit tries to prevent that and swing him up in front of his guns.

You give the order for Zolomon to activate the shock generator. There is a bright flare of lightning and the two drop out of the sky like a stone.

You see a couple of Fly Manta attempt to attack Zolomon now that he's unmounted. Zolomon dodges them both, takes out one with his Gatling shield, and as the other passes too close he manages to latch onto it with his heat rod.

The Saber Fish reacts by pulling up sharply in an attempt to throw him off. Zolomon merely uses the planes upward thrust as a spring board, reels the rod in and stamps on the plane, damaging it's engines and enabling him a brief footing to make a leap towards the nearest Gaw.

For a second it looks like he wont make it, then Norris Packards heat rod lashes out from the open hangar bay.

It's going down, the angle isn't too steep, and it might make it across the border into Panama at this rate, but it's going to be tight.

Anyway, as you look down you see the unidentified fighter continue to drop to the ground, at the last second you see the cockpit detatch and the white plume of a parachute.

The enemy numbers are now beginning to retreat, you've lost about a third of your Dopp cover and several other Gaw's are showing signs of heavy damage. The Outer Heaven is undamaged as are you.

"It looks like they're pulling back, running out of fuel! The rest of us are basically home free. That Gaws in serious trouble though, even if it does manage to safely crash land!" Fontaine comments.

Delicious. You know if the Angler Corps has any standoff ordinance (Cruise Missiles and the like) it may be worth it to relay some targeting information about the retreating aircraft to them. As the planes begin to land they shoot and scoot. Even if they're dumbfired, a bunch of missiles hitting the runways and generally fucking with their ability to recover their low-on-fuel aircraft sounds good to me. The shelling was the Xamel. The Missile's were the sub. (Although some of the missile's may have been the Xamel's too, I do know for certain that the Sub launched missile's on the base. Burning mentions it when they're hunting Gato after the Komusai goes down.) And that's not a post-war refit. The Post War Refit has 8 Missile Bays. The wartime Jukon had the 3 3 Barrel Missile Launchers.

Dunno, but even if we can't there may be some that need to land early that we could hit, and just having us behind them might force some to run themselves dry, hopefully leading to a crash, given how aerodynamic most Feddie planes are.

You're battered group makes it to the staging area out of San Jose and takes stock.

8 Mobile Suits lost, 5 badly damaged, one lost Gaw, the remaining 8 all have taken damage. Outer Heaven is undamaged and most of your suits have only taken minor hits. The Jaburo attack MS are on their way back to California, but have all sustained damage.
The Dopps have lost half of their numbers, and the Mech Infantry teams have lost a third of their numbers, which for infantry isn't a bad turnout.

Despite your losses Command still considers the mission a resounding partial success.

"In any case, our forces aren't in any sort of shape to be handling a trained division of Federal forces along with the Costa Rican brown river forces. So we've got the engineers doing make-do patches on the Gaws to try and redeploy north of the country."

"It still doesn't change the fact that the Feds are making a push, and our Southern Lines probably our weakest. Not so much after you pretty much killed off the organised resistance back in April David, but it's still the weak link in our American force composition."

"How the hell did THAT happen?" Norris asks Motnagu.

"Simple, with Costa Rica secretly on our side, we planned to use them as an early warning system and then deploy reserve forces to the Rio Grande to hold them off."

"And the reason we don't do that now is?"

"Because WE ARE THE RESERVE FORCES."

    the conversation reaches an impasse.

"Well, on the plus side, all of our combat data on enemy Mobile Suits has been sent to HQ. So there's that." The blond adds.

"What about the Mad Angler Unit, have we gotten contact with them yet?" You ask.

"Not yet, but under standard protocol they should surface and report back to base in about an hour, but they wont be able to meet up with us any time soon most likely."

After twenty minutes the engineers come back, they think the Gaws will be able to make a hop to about the middle of Mexico beofre they have to land. But after that it'll take twice as long to repair. It might be better to just abandon them, but you'll cross that bridge when you come to it.

Now you just have to pick a landing spot.
You suggest Salinca Cruz. If you taxi the planes into the town, you know the place is defendable, and it's deserted so you won't have to worry about civilian losses.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Gundam showing up, but the tank division should have atleast 100 tanks in it.

The Aspalus is back to being fully functional, though the heatsinks have been overloaded and there are no parts to replace them. The Beam cannon will fire, but it's going to trip those fuses again in quick order, and it's only going to get worse until those heatsinks are replaced. The parts for which are all the way in Peking.

Anyway, after an hour in the air the Gaws (some of which are sputtering and struggling make a landing on the clearing to the north-east of the town. The Gaws either Taxi, or have to be towed by Zaku-Tank to the middle of town.

It is currently 1am. The Mad Angler Unit checked in on time, apparently it was around 200 miles of Buenos Aires when it made the call. It won't be able to get to you any time soon, though it might make it to Mexico by the time the push comes in.

    DEFENSIVE PLANS?

THE ENEMY IS EXPECTED AROUND 10AM.

I'm gonna suggest that the Apsalus fly fairly far away from the fight, and keep in contact via laser com. If there's a potential breakthrough we use it's beam cannon to prevent it, otherwise keep it in reserve. It's ridiculously fast so it should be able to get back in range quickly.

Otherwise just set up the best defense we can with our Zakus and infantry. Build traps if possible, position the Gaws to use their beam cannons, get the Outer Heaven and the Dopps (and I guess any undamaged Gaws) as aerial cover, mount the more advanced units (the Goufs, Zaku F2's, the Flipper) on Dodais, and use the rest of the 'elite' units as a mobile reserve.

    >>8068895

Use Zaku fireteams led by people in Gouf-types as the core of the defence. Deploying in staggered defensive rings so that squads can move to cover each other without opening gaps or bulges in the line.

Our 3 Doms provide a mobile reserve - we use our retarded speed to move to engagment hotspots and tip any overwhelming enemy movment in our favour.

Calvin and Hovis do their usual double-team, providing directed artillery support, as well as being a mobile strongpoint that can be used as a rally point in the event any part of the battle line needs to fall back.

Dopp squads run in an incerceptor cloud above our centre ops area, moving out to hit enemy air attacks and then falling back - they don't have the fuel or numbers to last if they overextend themselves.

Infantry stand ready on their Wappas to provide the rest of the mobile reserve. Similar mission profile to the Dom squad, except they handle smaller threats with RPGs and disrupt enemy infantry so that the Doms don't get bogged down lending support on too many fronts.

Outer Heaven and Apsalus stand ready at the Centre HQ so as to provide long-range beamspam support when given targetting data from the Flipper Zaku. We don't need them wasting shots.

Not a bad call. I'll throw my thoughts in there.

Use the Zakus as the Core, not the Goufs. Goufs are close-combat suits. They're also fast. Have the Goufs with Zol as strikers, setting up lightning ambushes and disrupting units as they form, then falling back. Zakus are the core of the formation, a firing line by Squad. Behind that line, and anchoring it, are Jol and Hovis. Our Doms are on mobile assault duty, similar to the Goufs, but we strike from range with our 'zooks, while they get in close.

    Tl;DR
    Zaku Line by Squad.
    Jol and Hovis behind that.
Goufs as Ambush team and strikers.
    Dom as mobile quick support.

In the Fed Military, it's variable. It will at least be 5 companies of Tanks. Expect Land Battleship support at well, almost certainly air support as well.

Plus whatever they can get by twisting Mexico's arm.

Ghineus agrees to being fire support.

    >What are the forces currently at our disposal? Other than the Nachtmaren, I mean?

    Hmm. Lemme see.

There are currently 8 mobile suits in working order. Captain Salinca's B-3 and one of the Goufs (the other is still too badly damaged for combat.)
    Captain Montagu's S type Zaku,
    2 Zaku Cannons
    A J type Zaku
    An F type Zaku
    Norris Packards Gouf Custom.

Plus your forces. There are a couple of pilots who can be used to pilot your spare 2 F2's if you want.

    YOUR ORDERS?

Shit! Forgot to mention everything else. Use the Gaws that are relatively undamaged as MPC turrets. The Outer Heaven is grounded to keep itself from being a gigantic target. The Heaven is our ace in the hole. As is the Apsalus. If they're ever about to overwhelm us, Apsalus moves up, Beam Cannons, then falls back. If we're ever going to be seriously overwhelmed, the Heaven starts up and starts laying down hate and discontent like a motherfucker while we fall back.

Oh! And Calvin is on a lowflying Dodai gathering telemetry for our artillery, and generally keeping us appraised of everything.

Our Dopps are on CAP and CAS.

Oh, that reminds me. One change from my previous plan. I want to use the Doms as a fast, offensive scouting unit. Find the location of the enemy land battleships, relay it to Calvin, who relays it to the Apsalus, which comes in fast and wrecks it/them. If we can take out their biggest threat right away, things should go much better for us. I'd recommend using the Flipper on it's own, or some Lugguns or something, but I doubt they'd survive behind enemy lines. I think the Doms would, if they kept moving.

Zaku J, Zaku F, Zaku S- Squad 1, firing line
Zaku Cannon X2, Hovis, Jolyne- Squad 2, Artillery Support, behind Squad 1.
Salinca and other Gouf- Squad 3, supporting Squad 1
Zol & Norris- Squad 4, strikers, quick assault
David & Elaine- Quick Response, Hit & Run
    Calvin- Dodai, low altitude, Recon

    Dopps: CAP and CAS
    Grounded Gaws: MPC Support
    Outer Heaven: Grounded until needed
Apsalus: Grounded until needed. Probably sick it on the Land Battleship

Okay. Salinca, the Gouf, Zol and Norris form an impromptu striker squad as per >>8069134

Looking at the sattelite maps of the terrain, the Feddie forces are going to have to take the long way via the Panamericana and Super Carretera Transismica highways to move a division that size, unless they want to go for a swim. Therefore,

The S, J and F Zakus form ateam, as do the 2 Cannons and our spare F2s, (1 3-man team, 1 4-man), which then take up a staggered defensive postition in the outer eastern suburbs, backed by Wappa Infantry. We pre-sight the main highways and the large open stretches of land between suburbs for artillery bombardment by the Rhino.

The Gouf and Dom teams wait inside the massive refinery complex to avoid detection, and as the Zaku teams fall back, the striker teams move out to flank the enemy advance and disrpt large attacks. We then use our MA artillery, Apsalus and OH to force an enemy fallback, during which we reclaim defensive positions in the outer suburbs.

Dopps remain on standby as AA interceptors.
