    WELCOME BACK ANONYMOUS OF SORROW

You are Lieutenant David Lister, Ace Mobile Suit pilot for the Principality of Zeon. You are also the leader of the MS Squadron for the elite independant military corps: the Nachtmaren Unit.

You have just survived a failed invasion attempt on Federal HQ: Jaburo in South America.
But although you failed to take the base, you managed to make damn sure the Feddies knew they've been in a fight, over half of Jaburo's Ship Building capacity in flames, and two of their new Mobile Suit squads with it.

After a harrowing fight with an enemy ace in an unidentified High Performance mobile suit, you retreated back to your Mothership: The Zanzibar Kai class Assault Cruiser: Outer Heaven.

You are currently inside it's hangars, getting some cursory repair work. Most of the engineers are concentrating on Hovis's badly damaged Zock.

Captain Fontaine opens a direct line to you from the bridge.

"Well, we can make our getaway long before Jaburo's air contingent arrives, but the 123rd and 131st aren't so fortunate. The Gaw's can't land in this tropical terrain, and Engineering Unit has had to make one 10 miles north of here. Under good conditions, that'd be a half-hour walk for Zaku's, thing is, in this terrain, surrounded by enemy tanks, Fin-Fans and god knows what else, I think were about as far from good conditions as you can get."

"What's the game plan for their extraction?" You ask.

"Wappa mounted Infantry have been scouting a path across the terrain to the extraction site, and the Gaw's are already making their way now. The engineering unit has also come with our left over Mobile Suits from California, were to move ahead, swap our current MS for those fresh ones and support the retreat effort. Friendly Dopp squadrons are also on fire support until the enemy fighters start to arrive."

(Didn't we burn a landing strip in the jungle for just this kind of thing? Or did we never get around to that?)

I think us and Ruubend in Doms, Jolyne in the Artillery Dom, Zol in his Gouf Custom and Hobbes with the flipper/recon suit on a Dodai to provide information on the enemy forces and to relay that to the retreating companies to help them avoid the pursuing enemy units.

Hovis, I'm not sure about. If we have the Rhino, maybe that since the Zock is damaged.

Dense Jungle, with trees over the 18m height of the Zaku's, and WELL over the heigh of enemy tanks, who have their own network of underground tunnels and concealed trails to move a LOT easier than we will.
Occaisionally they're are rivers, most are deep and fast enough to require careful forging, or a risky jump hop if a clear landing exists.
Also, there are sometimes clearings. These will be mined. If not giant anti-MS pit-traps outright.

The Wappa's have managed to hash out a route that avoids the most of these obstacles as possible, but it's still going to be slow going. Even without the prospect of enemy attack, it's going to take about 1 hour for the MS forces to reach the Extraction Zone.

That won't leave a lot of time to book it before the Fighters arrive, but it'll be better than not being off the ground before the bombers arrive.

What are the wind conditions like?

Also what incindiary weapons are deployable from the Gaws/fat uncles/outer heaven?

Provided the wind is southernly (towards the base) we set fire to the rainforest behind our retreating troops to bog down feddie infantry, and destroy visability for armour.

If the prevailing wind isnt strong enough (and we set enough stuff on fire) this should also trouble Fin Fans due to increaces upward airflow.

    tl;dr fire is awesome.

I think the important thing to keep in mind is that these aren't normal flamethrowers. They are MS sized, and are meant to be hot enough to melt through tanks (I assume). Even if the foliage is damp and wet, it should still burn through, especially if there are more than one; if we, Elaine and Zol bring them, we should be able to cut a swathe fairly quickly.

Yeah, I'm thinking Dom's would be best here, overall. If all else fails they're still much tougher than Zakus. Be nice to get some flamethrowers to go with the bazookas, but I doubt that's feasible. HOWEVER, can we get incindiery rounds for the Dom Cannon?

In terms of Terrain handling, the Doms would be better than the F2, but the Gouf Custom would be shitting over the both of them. The J types used primarily by the 123rd will have the second easiest time, whilst the F type Zaku's will be the slowest going. Zaku Cannons will be around the J's level IIRC.

    >Would flamethrowers be good for clearing a path?

Risky, the MS forces are being supported by Wappa mounted Infantry remember, also the winds are changeable. The flames probably wouldn't damage the Mobile Suits, but the ammo might be a worry.

It depends - I'd rather not trap our troops in a ranging inferno, as well as sending up enough smoke to give away our position. The Heat Axes would allow us to clear a path while staying somewhat hidden. And we won't kill friendly troops on the ground.

Rather than clearing a path, I was thinking that fire would be a good way to secure our path behind us, and to obscure visibility from the air with smoke. Also, if we're lucky, it'll make close passes by planes more risky, and give us some leeway in that area. Also, since it's in the jungle with plenty of rivers, I don't imagine we'll get a full blown wildfire scenario too quickly to threaten us much. If I'm wrong though, or if anyone we can talk to about the plan THINKS we're wrong, I'd like to know before we start :P

Then deploy incindiary weapons from the air/arti behind our retreating troops preferably starting at the base exits once people are clear to hold back feddie gound forces. Despite minor changes in wind due to the dence forest there should be a single direction of prevailing wind (thats how weather works).

For unfaviourable prevailing wind direction set fire to forest near exis then use calvin to direct arty fire to slow the blaze down.

For forest clearing dom heat saber at 340kph should work nicely.

I'd just like to point out that the Dom's regular heat rod would probably be much, much better than a heat hawk for clearing trees and such. It's far longer, and shown to be hot/strong enough to melt through a Zaku in seconds. I'd say ditch the hawks, go with their regular loadout.

Not really, Zeon was never that big on Incinidery weapons, since they weren't any use in space, and Oxygen came at a massive premium in the colonies making testing these things rather prohibitive.
The Zaku Flamethrower, though functional was only made in limited runs. In fact the only documented time of it's use in the canon was in Cross Dimension by the Wulfgar unit in Africa.

Hmmm, Im not so sure the Recon Zaku is up for the job this mission, I mean it works best from a distance from the enemy working as a spotter.

But seeing how we are bound to run into ambushes i doubt artillery is a viable option, And that he should use something sturdier instead, Same with hovis if he can pilot a MS insteaf then he sould, After all i doubt the Rhino will be nimble in dense jungle.

Pretty much, Put Hobbes and Hovis in Zakus or other available MSes. They can´t do artillery support if we are running from a enemy.

    Everyone else is fine though.

    >Can we get an estimate of the number of friendly MS and infantry squads/platoons that still need to reach evac positions?

No MS teams have reached the Evac site yet. Overall, the 123rd is forging ahead, whilst the 131st is lagging behind due to it's large proportion of F type Zaku's which are having a hard time getting through the terrain.
In theory Captain Salinca and his Gouf squad could be here already, but he's stayed behind to support squads that get bogged down.

At their current rate, the 123rd will only need 45 minutes to reach the extraction point. 131st will probably need a full hour even if they don't get sidetracked or cut off.

There are currently no signal flares for help, but who knows how long that will change.

You mount up and the Outer Heaven lifts off and begins circling the evac route, supported by two wings of Dopps.

The Outer Heaven pushes forwards and after a short period you get the aerial dismount order. You exit the Zanzibar from the ventral door, behind you, from the MA pod Hovis in his Rhinoceros glides out, heavy load parachutes attatched.

"You okay? Your leg not giving you any problems?"

You descend from a low height, aim downwards with your Bazooka and fire. Ruubens does the same, and Zolomon and Jolyne support you with various vulcans.

Explosions blossom on the ground, pushing trees aside like grass. You see about six tanks attempting to retreat from you're air assault. Their improved elevation allows them to try and return fire, a 150mm shell whizzes past your leg and you return the favour.

Behind you, Hovis pops his chutes and you hit your thrusters to slow your descent. You pour fire onto the enemy position until you land heavily with a thump of Steel/Titanium composite and superheated air.

    "Nachtmaren! Report!"

"All fine boss, no sign of hostiles!"

I honestly don't know. My hard drive got wiped and I lost all of your kills from after Panama. I've been trying to update, but I've never managed to get round to it.

A lot. You were up to 100+ tanks after Montreal, I know that.

    >Move out. Spearhead with Doms and Gouf, with Rhino at the center.

With the Dom's and Gouf leading the way, you begin forging your way backwards through the escape route that the Infantry have laid out. Luckily you don't encounter any enemy hostiles. You reach a squad o Zaku's, two of them with Magella Top cannons firing backward.
    A pilot in a MS-06S greets you.

"We got word you were on your way! You're just in time! We've got a pair of enemy tank companies attempting to overrun our rear, and they're supported by enough mobile flak tanks to keep the Outer Heaven from safely landing! Captain Salinca's already moved up to try and force them back, get up there and help out!"

You give the orders and using the overlaid topography maps you begin flanking whilst Calvin uses the Zaku squads targeting data to co-ordinate fire support between them and Jolyne and Hovis.

The three of you dash forwards, you cross rivers using your hoverjets, Zolomon via Heat Rod Grapnel.
You reach the combat zone and jink to the side as a turretless tank flies past.
There are two Zaku's making a fighting retreat up a small bluff, one is missing a leg and an arm. They are supported by 2 Goufs led by a Gouf Custom who are engaging the Tanks in close quarters attempting to use their high speed to negate the lack of cover.
That flying tank probably came from the nearest Gouf finishing a backswing with it's heat-rod.

    You engage the enemy.

Counter-assault the tanks. Doms will do a lot better with their hover jets strafing the tanks. This, in turn, will allow the Goufs to keep slicing up the tanks. With two highly mobile threats to deal with, the tanks will be forced to retreat and call for support. It's doubtful support would be able to arrive in time for them, so that should be enough time to set the damaged Zaku as a micro-nuclear booby trap and get the pilot to safety.

The key to safety in this is mobility.

And back. Goddamn that Stew was thick, I swear it wasn't so custardlike in consistency yesterday...

    Anyway.

You open up your flanking attack with another round of Bazooka fire, the explosions take out an entire squad, collapsing the bluff they were using as a fireposition, falling rocks bury another two tanks. You quickly zip in with your thrusters and dirsupt the enemy lines further with more bazooka shots and Particle Scatter Gunfire. You see Zolomon, a heat-axe in each hand, Gatling Shield momentarily discarded for better balance, in the middle of the enemy formation, a whirling dervish of destruction.

Behind a veil of forest canopy you can see the flames from the massed bombardment from the Rhino, Dom Cannon and the support Zakus.
Evidently they must have suppressed the enemy AA enough, as the Outerheaven makes a strafing run, Battleship grade beam cannons send massive plumes of superheated dust into the air as they rend large glowing scores along the earth, and the enemy formations.

In the face of such overwhelming firepower the tanks retreat. You make the manouver costly, but don't pursue.

Once landed, the damaged squad limps inside and after a minute or so, the second squad returns along with Hovis and Jol and embarks as well.

Have Calvin pinpoint the enemy and we'll shell the fuck out of them, and move up quickly, but cautiously, not overcommitting in the case of more tanks. If there are more tanks, 'zook them. Don't shell them if they're not entrenched, to conserve ammo. Also, Doms flank any approaching tank groups, and hit them as the Gouf's move in, covering their approach.

The more I think about, the more I think that the top-speed Dom run would be the best way to deal with this minefield. Our ground pressure should set them off, but they'll be fused for MS moving at barely half our speed. We should be clear of each explosion in time.

    >Are mines heat-sensitive? Because if we can use the flamethrower to clear out the field, then we can go that way. They'll never expect it.

Unknown, previous encounters show a prevelance of pressure sensitive triggers.

    >Alternatively, could we use sonar to find the mines quickly?

Actually that would work pretty well.

General concensus is to take them out with shooting.

You order Calvin to do an active sonar pulse to try and detect the mines. Luckily with all of the noisemakers about, this goes undetected.

Coordinating with Salinca's squad they use their finger gatlings to clear a path with the mines. With all of the explosions and AA fire, hopefully this goes undected as well.

You carefully dash over the cleared path and are swiftly on your way.

After bypassing the tanks you quickly make your way over the trees and across the rivers. With your high speed units you make good time. About 20 minutes later you see a signal flare ahead of you, as well as explosions.

You dash forwards to meet up with the belaguered friendly forces when a giant blue lance of light appears out from overhead, and meets the ground with a great mushroom cloud. You see the round shape zoom overhead, seemingly immune to the effects of gravity, it avoids fire with strange and impossible turns and angles. Atop of this a shape covered in a camo shroud.

It must be attatched, no way someone could hang on after that sort of flying.

Christ at this point you're pretty sure every B-3 in the Zeon military is here at Jaburo.

He leaps off the moving vehicle and dives to the ground below.

Several Zaku's are already wrecked, it looks like half a Tank battalion has managed to get together and attack the 123rd. Friendly forces have found defensive positions in a dry riverbed, but they're taking a pounding. The battle line extends to at least 800 meters of close range slugging. You order Jolyne and Hovis to provide firesupport whilst you and Salinca's squad make a blitzkrieg attack against the enemy lines.
The shells and missiles begin to tear holes in the enemy line, and you start disrupting enemy formations with your heavy bazooka, the blasts sending whole tanks flying, the Goufs dive in, straight into enemy lines.

4 Close Combat model Gouf's begin causing abosolute havok. The confusion in the enemy lines allows the 123rd to mount a counter attack, and what could have been a prolonged fight that could have bogged friendly forces down is quickly turned into a decisive victory.

You meet up with Captain Montagu in his MS-06S.

"Thanks for the save you guys! Things were beginning to look bad for a minute there. Luckily those experimental reinforcements took out the Big Tray that was supporting those tanks!"

"What's you Company status?" Salinca asks.

"We took a mauling in the opening exchanges. four suits badly damaged, three lost outright. Were about below half strength, but we can make it back."

The Outer Heaven is circling overhead, ready to make another evacuation.

"Liuetenant! We're coming in to land, we can pick up another 8 Mobile Suits to ferry back to Evac Zone if you wish!"

Norris Packard appears from the Jungle covered in soot and hydraulic fluid, but otherwise unharmed. Salinca's squad is slightly more battered, one is out of Vulcan ammo and the other has lost it's sheild. All of Salinca's Goufs have holes and dents.

I'm advocating the use of Dopp support, if it can be requisitioned. We can't be forced to choose who goes and who stays. Get the four badly damaged suits onto the Outer Heaven, and then run a full retreat with the remaining suits. They're more than capable of making it back to base, not to mention we're probably going to need them for defending that strip. I highly doubt that those Gaws are going to get off the ground without a firefight being involved. The more suits we have available, the more firepower with which to weaken the pursuing forces which I can almost guarantee are one their way.

You ask Norris about the experimental unit carrying some units back.

"I doubt he'd go for it, I basically had to hitch a ride at the last minute just for him to let me do. Also, it's not something that a damaged suit can safely do. I reccomend loading the badly damaged and wounded onto the Cruiser, then having it take out the abandoned wrecks with it's beam cannons. No space to load anyone from Nachtmaren up.

Keeping the Doms flanking with the Gouf Customs in the middle you cautiously but quickly maky your way across the evac route. A couple of times a few stray fin-fans try to attack you, but you deal with those easily.

From the looks of things you've deflected or taken out the nearest enemy tank units. For once it looks like things might actually be going somewhat to plan.

There, I think I quibbled enough not to jinx it.

You make the evac site a little earlier than expect, leaving you with 20 minutes left to get the hell out of dodge.

Have the Doms screen the loading of our forces, and have Calving directly patch in with the Heaven, the airborne Gaws and the Experimental Unit, ready to relay coordinates at a moments notice. If anything tries to engage, lead with the 'zook, followup with precision 90mm fire. Ensure that the entirety of 131st and 123rd are aboard before we begin boarding the Outer Heaven. Doms aboard last. Prioritize rearming the Rhino and K2 once we're aboard.

    Those are planes.

Friendly Forces take 10 minutes to finish loading up, and seeing the onrushing forces, you waste no time in following suit.

"HURRY IT UP LISTER! THE SOONER WE GET OUT OF JABURO'S FLACK ENVELOPE THE SOONER WE CAN START PUTTING ZAKU'S ON DODAIS!" Captain Fontain howls at you. You follow his advice and hastily scramble into the ship.

You don't even have time to secure your Mobile Suit before the thrust from the Outer Heaven taking off nearly knocks you down.
"Hold tight boss! We're booking it!" Zolomon helpfully supplies.

Eventually however the cruiser levels out and you're able to secure your Dom to it's moorings.

"Well, that wasn't so hard" You hear someone from a nearby Gaw comment over the intercom.

"What are you? Stupid? THAT was the easy part." You hear Captain Montagu reply.

There WAS a failed attack on Jaburo in this month. Presumably without the drill units, the MS failed to penetrate Jaburo's defences and retreated. In that respect, Operation Hunter has probably sustained heavier losses this time around for the Zeons (with more losses most likely to come) however, so have the feddies, and losses like Mobile Suits CAN be replaced, the experienced pilots will be a bit of a blow, but aside from Norris and us, we wouldn't lose any real aces in this mission.
The feddies however, have suffered heavy damage to their Shipbuilding capacity, which is NOT something they can easily repair or replace.

Get it for the PSP, do turns in between other things. It's what I do. The bonus scenarios you get after completing certain campaigns are a lot simpler than the full campaigns. It's always you in 3 way campaign with a special event happening at Turn 50. If you have an original Thread of the Axis save then all of those get unlocked from the beginning, if you dont then you have to unlock them, which sort of sucks as they aren't as much fun as the proper campaigns. They do however make PERFECT starter campaigns for people who just need to get a hang on the rules, unfortunately.
