I'm looking for Axiom. I want to thank him for putting together an Alpha Splatbook and posting it on the 1d4chan page.

Also, I'd like to know if he'd be interested in doing more of what he did. I'm almost getting to the point where everything is pretty ready to start being put online, or at least together into a nice .pdf as he did - except the pokedex's final form.

    Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures thread.
    Questions, suggestions, etc. all welcome

There has been some confusion as to how you gain Classes, and this is because I've never explained.

When a trainer gains a level they might meet the prerequistes to gain a Trainer Class. Trainers can go into one to three of the following eight Classes once they meet the prerequistes: Ace Trainer, Breeder, Capture Specialist, Coordinator, Martial Artist, Psychic, Ranger, or Researcher.
From there, once they gain the nessecary prerequistes, they may go into one or two Advanced Classes.
Trainer's all start with the title: Pokemon Trainer. A Pokemon Trainer can take up to three Trainer Classes and/or Advanced Classes. Since Advanced Classes always have a prerequiste of a Trainer Class, a Pokemon Trainer's Feature Options will look like one of the following examples: Three Trainer Classes, never pursuing a speciality in any of the three Trainer Classes. Two Trainer Classes and one Advanced Class, choosing to find an expertise in an area of one of the Trainer Classes chosen. One Trainer Class and two Advanced Classes, choosing to become adept at the class they choose by mastering two aspect of the Trainer Class.

You gain these Trainer Classes or Advanced Classes instead of gaining a Feature during Trainer Level Up. When you take a Class, you gain two Features anyway so you aren't missing out on your Feature you get during that level.

When creating the eight major classes, we tried to make certain jobs, as being part of a team of trainers, filled.

The Researcher and Coordinator give bonuses to their Pokemon, Teammates and their Teammate's Pokemon, so they do a good job as playing leader.

The Ace Trainer and Capture Specialist can eliminate a threat in the wild by killing a foe or capturing them - removing them from the encounter. This fills the role of an attacker.

The Ranger and Breeder have many supporting features that help protect their allies and their pokemon, undo dealt damage with their care or fend of wilds. They fulfill a defender role.

The Martial Artist and Psychic essentially add another body onto the field to attack with, while having pokemon of their own. The fills the role of extra damage, different from the Ace Trainer or Capture Specialist - who can eliminate a threat entirely, so that foes are going down.

    Combat:

During a Round of Combat, you may issue one command to an Active Pokemon and you may perform one Trainer Action.

Trainer Actions are numerous and have several special cases but only a few actually use your entire turn so you may not issue a command to an Active Pokemon.

You may have more then one Pokemon out at a time, but this is discouraged since it gives the GM the chance to use several more wilds in the encounter.

After Trainer Actions, the Pokemon with the highest Speed goes first. They may use a Move and Shift. If they do not want to use a Move, they may Shift twice. When they use a Move, they roll an Accuracy Check and if they are successful, they roll for damage.
    >> Anonymous 02/09/10(Tue)19:49 No.8005076
How lethal have you set this up to be? I mean, are we talking zero HP and unconscious, just go to a pokemon center? Or zero HP, you're bleeding out and that charizard is going to fucking eat you?

After rolling damage, you add your Pokemon's Attack or Sp. Attack Stat to the damage, depending on the Move's Range, or no Stat if it is not a damaging Move.

The Pokemon who is getting hit by the attack applies weaknesses, resistances and then subtracts their Defense or Special Defense from the damage, depending on what type of Range the Move was.

When targeted by a Move, the foe must roll +1 during their Accuracy Check for every 5 points in their Defense, if hit by a Move that consults Attack or +1 during their Accuracy Check for every 5 points in their Special Defense, if hit by a Move that consults Special Attack.

Or, you may add +1 to their Accuracy Check for every 10 points in your pokemon's Speed.

This damage system makes Moves that buff stats very important.

0 HP is unconscious, if your Pokemon is hit to -100% HP, death savings throws are necessary.

Humans can be rendered unconscious when their HP is at 0 as well, but they are easily brought to at 1 HP, but they'll need hospitalization after such an injury unless someone on your team has a solution.

If you are knocked out, your Pokemon will protect you by using random Moves until the encounter has ended or they are knocked out.

There are a few classes that can heal or stay alive.

In Ace Trainer, the Enduring Soul is very hard to bring down, and can deal with being at negative HP.

In Researcher, the Scientist can produce potions in the field from virtually nothing.

The Breeder can take an Advanced Class in Medic.

The Psychic can become a Healer.

The Martial Artist has great HP bonuses, and is generally more durable then other classes.

    Gym Challenges:

This took a while to figure out how to handle, since you don't want the rest of your party just sitting around, but it's been figured out and it works like clock work now.

Basically, a 3 vs 3, one on one trainer battle against a Gym Champion - the rest of your team does watch, but it gets fun when everyone is into it.

These battles take about 5-10 minutes, the allies can watch from the side to Pokedex the gym leader's pokemon (since doing so in battle is a waste of time) and cheer on.

Building up the fact that they are battling in front of a filled-stadium crowd is important to build hype but this led to the question: Where is the crowd coming from?

    The Gym's campus.

Gyms are essentially College like campuses with several thousand trainer aiming to replace the Gym Leader once they retire.

This also presents a place for players to go and arrange matches whenever they like at the local gym.

This is because everyone want to get many wins against trainers to prove their worth to the Gym Leader. Naturally, higher level students won't always show up since they already know they are in the running for replacing the Gym Leader and need to prove nothing.

This also eliminates "Our eyes have met! We must battle!" because that's just nonsense. A Trainer should never HAVE to accept a challenge, their pokemon might all be dead or near death and you just want to get through the forest. Yes, trainers sometimes will challenge you and be rough about it but you'll never have to accept the challenge.

is there any idea yet on psychic's hp levels it seems to me somewhat overpowered if one specializes correctly. For example a hex maniac/ healer could theoretically keep burning/thunder waving everything, and heal off the extra damage from the healer dailies.

Gyms NEVER need to be done in order.

Gym Leaders' pokemon wear 'bracers' that limit their Pokemon's power so as not to discourage new trainers. Gym Leaders are also sensible about this matter.

If you fight Blaine first, he'll assault you with his Charmeleon and Ponyta, battling Brock last ensures that you'll face his Aerodactyl and Rhyperior.

This format also easily allows for anyone to create their own Campaign setting with whatever Gym leaders you've created.

You'll find that not everyone wants Badges. In the campaign I'm GM'ing now, only 2 of my players challenged Brock. The other 3 were not interested in collecting Badges.

Also, 5-10 minutes is an estimate for your first time playing a Gym Leader. In reality, these take 3-5 minutes to get through unless you adding a lot of fluff - that's okay too though, it's really up to your group's style.

    >>8005415
Yes. But at that point, complying isn't a big deal, is it?
Also, you'd likely inform local authorities, and they'd take care of it.

    >>8005413
Psychics can do this, but at the point you're describing, around level 15, other trainers are doing just as insane things.

Also, I've never seen my players "grinding." Exp. from battles are high to that and weak pokemon you find are quickly caught up to the rest of your team. Around level 45, your pokemon significantly slow in leveling - but a well thought out level 45 can O.H.K.O. a trainer's level 70 if you know what you're doing with Moves and Type Advantages. I'd say a gap of 35 levels between a foe is dangerous, but still doable from what I've seen in playtesting.

I propose a sort of honorable conduct inherent in being a trainer. Challenging a weaker or damaged opponent then winning is dishonorable. Declining a challenge is dishonorable. Declining a challenge when all your pokemon are wounded, or the opposing trainer vastly outranks you, is not dishonorable. Sort of a psuedo-chivalric code. People won't want to battle with dishonorable trainers.

Mewtwo is BBEG material - I'd say he's an exception.

3 vs 3 is fast and fun. Plus if they lose and you win, you get to brag since you are only allowed one challenge per gym per month and your party isn't going to wait around for month for one trainer.

While honor among trainers is not the same through out there are very many punks.

Pokedexs and a training license take 2 years after high school (which ends at the age of 16 in the suggested settings) to get and cost about 40,000. This gets you out of trainer school at the age of 18 and you can start your adventures. Punks and assholes probably won't pass exams. The Pokemon Organization does not want thugs walking around with portable weapons.

    Mewtwo's Base Stats:
    HP: 11
    Atk: 11
    Def: 9
    SAtk: 15
    SDef: 9
    Speed: 13

Depending on his level, we'll call that X, he'll have X-1 more stats wherever he wants it.

More on Mewtwo in a bit.

There are several Features that can control natures.
There are a few Features that can find particular types.
In terms of Species, I ask my players to give me a list of 3 pokemon they'd like to encounter throughout the campaign on the first day. It's the GM's responsibility to try and spawn at least 2 of those 3 during the campaign, so players can use pokemon they always wanted to train in an RP game.

    >>8005844
Considering you can go win money from other trainers or contests, and a Gym Match win gets 4000, for example, everything is actually not very expensive. The 40,000 trainer's license is to justify the player's lack of money at the beginning of the campaign.

If you're over hunting, but pokemon are plentiful and aggressive, unless you're looking for nests to stomp on eggs, no one seems to mind. At least that's my take on it.

    More on Mewtwo:
    Here are its Capabilities:
Overland 6, Surface 5, Underwater 2, Sky 4, Jump 7, Power 10, Intelligence 7, Telekinetic, Telepathic, Mind Slaver, Mental Lock

More Capabilities will be added appropriately. Capabilities for each pokemon is what I'm working on now.

Other then that, info from the source material doesn't change much.

    Capabilities:
This is what separates the video game's pokemon from the tabletop's.

Capabilities is a new addition for the purposes of Pokemon Tabletop Adventures.
Each Species of Pokemon move at different rates in various terrains. They have different capacities for jumping strength and physical strength. Some Pokemon can fly while others can breath underwater. Many Species of Pokemon can be trained for being used as a Mount. Others are too small for that but can be used for infiltration as a result of their size. The Capabilities list all keywords relating to static abilities the Pokemon has.
    Examples of some Capabilities:
Overland 1-Overland 10: This is a scale, accompanied with a meters per turn speed, given to each pokemon where Overland 1 is given to Slowpoke and Overland 7 is given to Suicune.
Sinker: Pokemon with Sinker cannot swim
Firestarter: Pokemon with Firestarter can produce flames without using a Move. Some TMs, such as TM 35 Flamethrower, will give a Pokemon the Firestarter Capability as well as the Move Flamethrower.

Mind Slaver is a Capability unique to Mewtwo.
He can mentally control the minds of several Pokemon and or Humans, from miles away. He can add a target who fails to make a saving throw by targeting them and using Mind Slaver in place of a Move.

Mind Lock is not unique to Mewtwo
Pokemon with Mind Lock cannot have their minds read.

For those curious, these are the primary Capabilities.

Burrow, an underground speed ranked from 1-5. Intelligence, ranked 1-7, where 4 is average. Jump, ranked from 1-10. Overland, ranked 1-10, shows how much your pokemon can Shift per turn. Power, 1-10, is how strong they are/the average weight they can lift. Sky, ranked 1-10 shows how much your pokemon can Shift in the air per turn. Surface, again ranked 1-10, shows how much your pokemon can Shift on water per turn. Underwater is ranked 1-5 and shows underwater speeds.

Certain HMs/TMs grant Capabilities, or add a rank to them if your Pokemon already has that capability.

Pokemon and Trainers each get one shift per turn.

If either choose not to perform an action, they may shift twice.

If a pokemon is performing a melee attack, they may shift 150% of their usual Shift distance to get to the target.

A pokemon may shift for free in order to intercept attacks on a check of 6 on d20.

Veterans must re-earn the right to enter. The championships are limited to 64 entries per year. Show 8 badges, issued to you that year, and you're signed up. When re-challenging Gyms to reacquire badges, Gym Leaders will NOT use the power bracers on their pokemon.

Get first place in the 64 and you may challenge the Elite 4. You enter with 6 pokemon, and get healed between the rounds, but must win all against all 4 in 3 vs 3 matches to become a Champion.

My first players participated, I placed them in different brackets and sure enough they made the top 4. They battled each other, congratulated the opposite when they won and the winner fought against the elite four and won. Barely. He was crowned a champion.

He battled a previous Champion, Red, in an exhibition match, but surrendered halfway through.

Certain legendaries are best kept uncaught unless you're aiming to be BBEG. However, if you are allied with legends, you can find ways to summon them. One of my players could summon Deoxys because he protected its egg as it was reincarnating itself over a few months.

A note about the championship - it's for sure a good way to end a campaign. After the BBEG is taken down, they got let in for free, even though they had 10 or so badges from mix and matched regions, for epic public service. After working together for ages, they were forced to see which of them went the farthest.

I also want to eventually run a campaign that starts with a Championship, the PCs meeting each other by placing high.

Instead of having a team theme'd around a certain type. I had a team that was theme'd around a color.

    The color was white.

I think my final team was:
    Empoleon
    Gardevoir
    Staraptor
    Absol
    Togekiss
    ... another white pokemon.

1 - Will the "pressure" ability still exist? If so, will it actually be useful for once?

He said that trade evolutions (i assume thats what you ment) can still be evolved. I would guess that they would all become happiness evolves.

I assume leafeon and the like are handled by the GM. Like if you level up in a forset.

I think breeders can make wondertombs. We had a thread a few days ago where someone brought up that a wondertomb would make an awesome BBEG.

Pressure does exist, when activates it reduces all foes' Frequencies At-Will -> Every Other Trun -> Battle -> Center

    Wondertomb cannot happen.

    Not very rare

Evolve to Leafeon with Leaf Stone or in a dense forest.
Evolve to Glaceon with Cold Stone or in a snowy region.

Special circumstances result in special encounters.

The general gist of it was that it was a 4E game, lich tries to summon an elemantal army, mutates the players into the legenadry's, players can't stop him.
Once P:TA comes out, the gm will be running a game that takes place a few thousand years later. The elemantal army (which im sure you figured out are pokemon) have been tamed, and the lich was somehow stopped.

However, Team Generics leader has a Spirtomb that, intead of being made of 108 souls, is only made of 1... the lich.

Turnns out, Team Generics leader is just a puppet... its really run by his wondertomb.

Syringes with a liquid that can only be used once.

They must be applied at Pokmon Centers since the pokemon needs to be sedated as it painfully grows the new organ that allows it to use the new move.

Close quarter pokemon can move more then usual if they are using a melee attack during their turn. Ranged attack do have a limit, so even flying pokemon need to close the distance eventually. Teleport has a 10 minute cool down, so you can do that tactic once.

Return is the move that utilises the Happiness in a more positive light, by rewarding the amount the Pokémon likes the trainer. It is a Normal Type Physical Attack with 20PP and 100% accuracy. It's power is calculated by the following means:
    Base Power = Pokémon Happiness / 2.5

This gives a maximum result of 102 and a minimum result of 1

I'm basing it around Sunny Day because this thread has inspired me to make a theme team and it's freezing outside, but that's not a bad idea to throw in.

Anyway, about the actual game: Will HMs (or really any moves) have specific rules as to what they can and cannot do outside of combat?
    >> Researcher Sam 02/10/10(Wed)00:34 No.8009541

In that case I'd also suggest a Houndoom with Sunny Day, Solarbeam, Crunch and Flamethrower. This is possible without a move pusher, all you need is the Sunny Day and Solarbeam TM/HM.

Not really, but some TMs and HMs will grant capabilities.

For example, if a pokemon has Sinker (cannot swim) but is taught Surf they will lose Sinker and gain Surface 1.

The tabletop? Are you (or anyone in this thread) expecting to run an online game, for one?

About the actual mechanics: Unsure of this has been asked, but is there a Capability that allows water-types to be amphibious regardless of whether they would normally be? Such as how Seaking and the like just sort of...float or flop around in the games.

Also, since pokemon only get 1 stat point at each level, their stats will be much lower than in the games, where they get multiple points for multiple stats. Does this make the pokemon in the tabletop game less powerful, or do the mechanics take the lower scores into account?
