76 KB Lord Quest XIV - The shrine of the old gods. Quest Lord !!7ls3wo7NoED 02/08/10(Mon)04:09 No.7977717
You wonder into the shrine, the light shining through the holes in the ceiling. The shrine is overgrown and falling apart, but the effect is idyllic rather then a problem. It looks stable, as if nothing has collapsed recently. The shrine itself is small and only the centre is roofed over, but stairs downwards lead from the small hut, the most intact remnant of the shrine. Upon approaching the hut, you notice that the hut has been built over the remnants of a stairwell, which used to lead both up and down. Now however there is no up. The stairway has crumbled in places, but is mostly intact. Alternatively there is a hole in the floor, with a makeshift rope leading downwards.

First, post 3 manhunters to keep a look out around the shrine.

Next see if we can discover which divinity this shrine belongs to, and offer up some sort of small prayer before we start snooping around.

After that, examine the staircase / hole more closely.

Clint has no idea what this temple is about. Architecture isn't his thing. It's not anything Artagus would put up, far too large for one thing.

Artagus is one of the newer gods, although isn't one of the newer gods that is opposed to the Wild gods and older gods on principle.

Don't think we'll need a guide, if they're terrified of going near the killy-things.

We should meet this priest. See what he can do for us, and maybe use the troll scalp/teeth we nabbed in exchange for anything useful.

You continue searching this level, slowly moving and exploring every room. In some you find piles of goods of various kinds, in others you find straw beds or nothing. Eventually you come to what you think would be the centre point of this floor. A large totem dominates the room, upon observation you see it was carved from a pillar. Various faces adorn the pillar, and an altar is at the bottom of it. Around the altar are some smaller totem poles and other artifacts. Some heads adorn an old rusted pike in various states of decay, you see similar heads on poles around the room. Then from in the middle of this grisly display a troll steps out. Mo'mo'wait for lil'un. mo'time waiting. Now you're here. Bring a gift for the Zul in lil'zul'dan?"

You get your knife and give it a clean, before slicing your palm and letting the blood run down your sword into the altar. It pools up, and you get Leold to give the troll scalp. The priest grabs the scalp, and places it on the altar. He grabs an unlit torch from a holder on the pillar, and says a single sylable in trollish. You don't recognise it, but suddenly the torch flares into life. He puts the torch first to the scalp, and then to the blood, while speaking trollish in a low, reverential tone. After shaking the torch out he places it back where it was.

The blood and scalp burns oddly, first it seems to act as if flammable, then burns with odd colours, greens and whites and reds, all at once. It's like nothing you've seen with alchemy, and you suspect the supernatural is at play.

The troll speaks again. "You bring goo'gift for Zul'dan. Zul'un tell you of something special. Down below, where the clawed shadows lurk, there is a tresure of mo'value to you. If you go now, you get it, mo' much valor, but treasure remain a hojo'wyrd, messy unknown forever. Return in two moons, and the treasure will show it's Wyrd to you. But the lil'glory will be less.

I think it would be best to wait the two moons until we know what this thing is. Fame and valour and all that? We can get that other ways. But supernatural magic and shit? That's the kind of thing we want to understand. So let's say goodbye to this troll priest, shake his hand with our bloody hand if he will, and say that we'll be back.

Then go get our hand cleaned and wrapped, and talk with our advisers about what we just did.

Close enough, part 2 was Zul'jin the badass troll boss from WC2. Troll beserkers were badass in that game, throwin' axes and doesn't afraid of no-one.

Troll language tidbit: Zul is holy, and 'jin means hero, heroic or awesome. Zul'jin is a mythical ancestor figure in trollish lore, a name taken by great heroes through the ages. Ze'mo'Zul'jin was a mighty hero who in ages past spearheaded the exodus from the southlands to the north with a great many trolls, freeing them from their constant war with the elves and dragons (mon'gon).

    Direct path it is.

Aegon and Cohen come and tell you that they had an insight or two in the troll's prophesy, but it seems you've figured them out. 'Gon is their word for large flying monster, dragons, wyverns, etc. it's a catch all. And Wyrd is like a destiny or a prophesy. It's one of the four old gods, the ancients. Hojo is another. Hojo is a force of change and chaos. Luck, etc. whereas Wyrd is a force of destiny and prediction. The other two are Morr and Ani, death and life in turn. They are the only gods who seem to be universally worshipped by every race, although the trolls have a connection to Hojo moreso then any other, despite venerating them all equally.

Wyrd is a concept in Old English culture roughly corresponding to fate or personal destiny. The word is ancestral to Modern English weird, which retains its original meaning only dialectally. The cognate term in old Norse is Urðr, with a similar meaning, but also personalized as one of the Norns, Urðr (anglicized as Urd) and appearing in the name of the holy well Urðarbrunnr in Norse mythology. The concept corresponding to "fate, destiny" in Old Norse is Ørlǫg.

Do they have any contagious diseases? If not, they can come live in our town.

Nah, it's double of a number that gives extra-ordinary events. So if the next event roll is a 10, expect awesome. If the next 2 are 1s, expect terribad.

Town it is. They don;t have anything contagious that you or anyone in your band notice, but you make a mental note to quarantine them in Zeek's care for a little while in case.

    >>7980532
    Yeah, that. Whoops.

They also got a vote of a kind, while they were a band of free outlaws, but that's not the point.

Have the healer give them a quick glance over. If the sick pose a danger to our village, I'm afraid the swampers are going to have to make a hard choice.

Nicely done. And just in time mr 20.

You get home and send for Zeek immediately. It turns out there is no serious contagious diseases, and you have another new dozen villagers, who should be able to work by the start of next month.

Welcome home guys. I'll start the new month next time, QL's gotta sleep. Same as normal, archive this for me, and

    Home again, home again.

    AND.

Not only did we not lose a signle guy, we brought new people home. Who's awesome? We're awesome.

QL before you go can you at least give us an approximate date for next time?
It's kind boring waiting for an hour each day on the chance you might show up.

Sure. Tomorrow evening hopefully. IF not then, likely next monday. Might be a wenesday or a friday one, but I doubt it. And definitely not a Thursday one unless my plans fall apart.

If I haven't started by 7pm (my time) I generally won't start that evening. Won't start before 6pm either. So if you check at 7 (again my time GMT +10, work it out for your locality - I don't have daylight savings ever) you shouldn't miss much.

That said, I'm curious as to how many regulars I have, and how many are usually on nowish and join up if they see it, and how many are just occasional/one off followers.

I live on the East Coast of the US, man. I'm only up this late (or early as it is now) because my job and studies call for a lot of all nighters.
    >> Anonymous 02/08/10(Mon)10:27 No.7980751
Europe, I usually wake up an hour or so before you start.
    >> Anonymous 02/08/10(Mon)12:56 No.7982056
I've only managed to play this quest a couple times, and only for a couple hours then. Not really shaking out with my US Central timezone.

Still, I read it everytime I see it on sup/tg/.
    >> Anonymous 02/08/10(Mon)12:59 No.7982083
Another regular. US Central time, which means I don't usually get to partake unless it's a weekend (I stay up way late), or you start really early, or it's still running when I'm on lunch break and I notice it having been archived. Just got on to catch the end of the thread, but it's always fun to read through them all.

Hence me loving weekend Lord Quest sessions.
