Your first experiment with Averrons as beasts of burden has ended deliciously. Not only have you filled the cellar with tasty meat, acquired even more chitin plates, piled enough bone to keep the mill running for a week, and scraped in enough fat to produce hundreds of pounds of soap, you've discovered an easy, efficient way to bring home a month's worth of food in one go. On top of everything else you've done, well, let's just say you've endeared yourself to these people quite nicely.

Lunch is served with a tiny sliver of Demon meat for each person, to the same purpose as a vitamin supplement. There's enough of that to keep the villagers going through most of winter, and it will keep for years in this cold weather. During the meal, Mal speaks with you about expanding the cellar, or building several more. If you continue to bring down enormous animals like this, they won't be able to eat fast enough to clear the space.

Besides that, you discuss with the Elders something else that's been on your mind. Log cabins are quick and easy to build, but they don't provide the best protection from heat loss. Better than broken-down huts, certainly, but not as good as they could be. You've decided that, if possible, you'd like to start setting quality over speed of construction. Half-assing your home-building, especially this far North, can have predictable results once the snow starts falling. They agree with you, of course.

Rather than build multiple cold storage rooms, we can simply enlarge the current one as needed, since it's really just a big hole in the ground with ice in it with a cover on top.

Enlarging the cellar seems like an excellent plan.

Continue focusing our spell learning on the chill spell. See if we can cover a larger area, extend the duration, or alter to emanate from ourselves or an object instead of being fixed in place.

I'd like to eventually develop a version that we can use in combat for hours on end as a "come anywhere near me and start freezing to death" spell, so as to prevent ourselves from being swarmed by many small people with weapons.

    -Build houses
    -Enlarge cellar, possibly build more
    -Expand fields
-Gather lumber/stone for a set period per day
    -See about indoor plumbing

Are we still planning to build a bath-house and communal toilets for the time being? Indoor plumbing would be nice, but it might be impractical until we level up the tech tree some more. Metal valves (assuming we get the Averron hide pipes working) aren't going to make themselves.

True. I keep forgetting that their may be magical answers for these type of problems. The real trick, however, will be finding said solution in a timely fashion. We also would have to learn the magic, which will take more time unless we can contract a wizard in the bigger towns/cities to do it for us. Hence my vote for centralized toilets until we learn enough to do otherwise.

Actually hiring a wizard is not that bad of a plan. Nothing powerful, but since this is rather high-magic setting I imagine there are decent number of more... utilitarian wizards out there, who specializes in doing various useful stuff instead of killing them with fire/ice/lightning/bears. They would probably be more rational about the whole human turned giant thing, especial if paid in gems.

Speaking of black-smithing, we should be able to make a water wheel powered billows that would provide a constant stream of air to the fires. This would have to be done at some unspecified time in the future, but it would be useful. It should help increase the maximum heating temperature AND lower the amount of manpower to forge new materials. But this can go under the "wouldn't it be nifty in a year of two if..." file

But communism is designed specifically for implementation in relatively small villages- just like this one- in which everyone is motivated and willing to work together- as they are here. When you say it's never worked, you're talking about large-scale implementations; there are in fact small-scale communes which function fine, though not in isolation due to the way the modern world works.

It's not a bad idea unless we start trying to apply it on a national scale.

On the contrary, communism worked well enough to bootstrap a backwater filled with half-starving peasants into a major industrial power, despite being invaded by an army bent on genocide and ruled by a homicidal madman.

Unless you mean the bit about the workers rising up in a post-industrial nation and instituting socialist governance, which is maybe the Netherlands?

Anyway, given that: 1) "communism" only really exists as a militant political ideology in opposition to "state capitalism," which doesn't seem to exist, and 2) since we are "growing the community" in exchange for a place to live that isn't a post-apocalyptic survival nightmare, politics doesn't seem like something to really worry about.

We're trying to raise quality of life and make a home for ourselves in the process. End of story.

And to be honest, just making sure they wash their hands will do wonders for their long term health. Keep in mind, however, that they already have to walk to dump their waste at the cesspool anyway. It has been fifteen days. You have continued your training, flexing unused muscles, running at top speed for as long as you can manage, and trying to sneak past the hunters without letting them see you. You can feel your steps getting heavier as you build muscle, filling out your thin form a little bit as you grow into more of a normal Frost Giant size. Some of the peasants have expressed confusion as to why you would want to be even stronger, but the answer is obvious. You want to do more.

Kel is now your informal apprentice, following your lead as you continue teaching the villagers literacy and extolling modern concepts, picking up on all of the general knowledge you took for granted on Earth. On a whim, you try showing him and a few others the tablet, and getting them to focus enough to produce a spark, a light, anything magical. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be able to hear the artifact whisper, or feel the surge of cold that accompanies your casting, or visualize the patterns that unlock the power of an ice bolt. It could be that none of them have the aptitude, or that they simply require much more practice. Either way, it's something you should look into.

Four standard (small) houses have been framed and gone up, though they are all in various stages of completion. The dabbling blacksmiths have managed to produce a small but effective saw, with you helping them occasionally using alchemy. The millhouse now serves as a sawmill as well, and there are plans to build an actual, dedicated structure for wood-cutting. The saw can cut soft wood faster than a man, but is near-useless for slicing up hardwood, unless you're cranking it directly instead of letting the waterwheel handle it. Scaling up the wheel and the saw, as well as producing a sort of wooden gearbox, are on the list.

As Lark combs the population for any natural mages he may have missed, you've continued your studies, poring over the books and drinking up information with curious eyes. You have learned a lot about this world, its technology, its culture, and its layout. It is an enormous place, especially considering that there are no cars, powered ships, or 747s. Just buggies, sailing vessels, and the occasional ornithopter, except where magic is widely available. Even a simple airship design could revolutionize travel, at least between major cities.

In between your various other jobs, you've doubled the size of the cellar by the Hall, and built several smaller ones throughout the town, in case of failure or pests. They've all been filled with ice, now a simple task, and stocked with meat. The dirt beneath their floors has become the most popular hiding place for valuables, since you first worked the Magma Steel under the first cellar's earthen base. The field expansion project has been put more-or-less on the back burner, with you concentrating mostly on pulling stumps when needed, while some of the farmers till.

Bem has gone back to Fain with a stack of furs and come back with several shiny new tools, as well as a collection of tomes that you suppose serves as this world's version of an encyclopedia. It's a very outdated set, which is why it was cheap enough for him to get without making anyone suspicious, but it has entries on nearly every subject you can think of, including Demons of the Deep. It is very rare for one of them to appear outside the mantle, but it does happen, and the gems and armor they carry helped a village of antiquity blossom into a burgeoning metropolis.

Though indoor plumbing is a far-off dream as long as you lack a reliable, quick way to manufacture pipes and valves, better sanitation is not a lost cause. This town has never had so much as an outhouse, but that will change. You have planned a nice, multi-seat bathroom, fed by a channel from the stream and carrying waste safely to the cesspit, with a diversion route leading to the methane furnace you hope to build. Hopefully, it's the start of something lasting, and useful.

You awake at dawn on the sixteenth day, well-rested after a night of intensive practice. The cold aura stubbornly refuses to increase in duration, but has become very powerful, with a large range. The ice beam and grenades are even more powerful, and you have found a way to split the beam to hit separate targets, and fire individual grenades one at a time without using much power. On the other hand, you still can't Reconstruct anything worse off than a bent shovel, and it still tires you out, but it's amazing progress nonetheless.

Easily covering the short distance to the Hall, you find Bem waiting for you, obviously wanting to ask you something important. He tells you that, since everything's under control here, he was planning to take a trip to the town past Fain with a gem or two. It would take ten days, but he could get pretty much whatever you wish, without arousing suspicion. Bluff is his favorite skill, after all.

The likelihood is low. The government can do practically anything it wants in wartime, thanks to a dozen carefully-worded statements in what passes for the national constitution, but confiscating the remains and products of a Demon is not the same as taking farm animals. For one thing, the killing of a Demon is an extraordinary circumstance, to which special rules apply, and for another, word would get around if such a thing was done, and there would almost certainly be a revolt unless a great quantity of resources was expended to keep everything hushed. In the government's view, sending an armed convoy to take all of your gems would be a bad move. They can simply increase your taxes if they find out what you've got, anyway.

Possibly. Since this is a larger town we are trading in, it might not raise as much attention. Especially if it is a trading hub. We can't trade for ALOT of coinage, but we should be able to take a few gems to convert to cash with the hope that Bem passes his BLUFF roll while trading. But the real priority should be the other things listed (books and supplies)

We should get some book on weather magic. Windstorm really should help against massed arrow/bolt fire (which should be your main concern if you need to fight against any army), and given our aptitude for ice magic, we could easily add some ice particles into into windstorm turning it into extremely dangerous mass anti infantry weapon. Weather control would also be helpful to prevent harvest getting ruined.

We should pick up some books on enchantment. We now have a great variety of gems, which in many settings are useful for anchoring or focusing spells. I'd like to learn how to use them in this fashion; no need to recast chill spells every day if we can make a gem generate refrigeration, for example.

According to Lark, there is no reason for the gems you've got to be any better as anchor points for spells than any mundane object. For the enchantments you envision, there are special magical bases which keep them grounded. There's quite a market for them in the bigger cities.

Not to say that you can't anchor an enchantment to anything you damn well please, just that you'll have the best luck with something designed for that purpose.

An enchantment base is simply a magically altered configuration of objects used to bind a certain magical effect to the material plane, keeping it from dissipating over time. In its most common form, it looks like a miniature, circular ring, with runic symbols printed on the edges and crystalline spines sprouting from it, converging on a center point that usually glows when the device is in operation.

It's called a Magelock. It keeps an enchantment confined to a certain area, and keeps it from eroding over time. There are many, many different types, with varying qualities, but that's their most basic function. They are manufactured by skilled mages in magic-infused forges, generally a fair distance from population centers.

You build yourself a long, long list of things you might want, if they can be gotten without trouble, and Bem gets it all down on a piece of parchment, scrawling away with a crude wooden pen. After you've finished, he takes a quick breakfast, and gathers a few farmers to help him with the cart. They trundle off down the South road, on their way to a switch that will take them directly to Grennet, the next hub town.

For the next ten days, you continue working at a feverish pace, focusing the first of your efforts on establishing a genuine lumber mill. A waterwheel is built, axles are cut, gears are assembled, and a new sawblade, with alchemically sharpened teeth, is installed in a wood-and-stone structure through which entire logs can be run. Your projects have already clear-cut an area of forest just large enough for a fifth farm field, and you're on your way to putting in a sixth. Work so far has been on a rather small scale, putting up tiny buildings with a single, immutable purpose, but as the town's industrial capacity expands, so will your plans.

Another two houses go up with the aid of the sawmill, and sawdust insulation soon fills the walls of the first two. During whatever free time you can manage to squeeze out of the day, you alternate between learning, teaching, and practicing, training body and mind in one go, while ramping up the power of your magic. You can cast three normal ice 'spells' a day without tiring yourself out, and you've finally figured out how to increase the aura's duration, though it requires much more extra power than you think it should.

Bem returns with a full cart, pulled by a strong, healthy-looking cow, and carrying a chicken in each arm, with a rooster not far behind. To the wide eyes of every peasant in the village, he unveils his precious cargo. Books on magic, history, monster lore, bowmaking, herbs, enchantment, and several other topics, along with a full blacksmithing manual in three volumes. Five chickens, a rooster, a cow, high-quality farming tools, another full set of smithing tools, this time a bit better than the bargain bin stuff the crew's been playing with, and a new anvil and bellows round out the first part of Bem's haul.

For the next, bags upon bags of all different kinds of seeds, among them this world's versions of tobacco, coffee, cocoa, barley, and oats, along with several panes of green glass, three crossbows, enough cloth to make you a whole new set of clothes and then some, and a stack of oversized sheets of paper. Aside from all that, he brings news; the war goes well, with Perin occupying large swaths of territory and cutting down all defenses. The unit one of the town's youths was assigned to captured several fortifications without support, only taking 20% casualties. And, to top it off, the search for the lone Frost Giant was called off weeks ago, cited as a waste of men and time. As you sigh with relief, Bem pulls a small reddish gem out of his pocket, saying that he had a little left over after filling the cart. Then he drops a bag of gold the size of his head into Sahl's hands. You've got currency. Real, honest coin.

    And you've barely gotten started.

For a brief moment, I thought that one of those shields had an awesomeface on it. Then I was disappointed that it didn't.

Someone's missing a few steps between 8 and 9. Quest gets adapted into 39 volume manga and 13 episode anime are two of them.

Spider-like, I suppose. Large, plated abdomen with many legs, all ending in thin blades. Head sticking out of that, with a segmented neck and no visible mouth. 'Arms' ending in long, thick claws. Nine red eyes in a circle, with the largest in the center.

Duly noted and updated. And you are a much better DM than I am, so it all balances out in the end. Yay for specialization!

Yeah, it will look like the ones in the center of the skirt. I just ran out of steam when I was working on it. It was surprisingly difficult to come up with more shield styles so it didn't look like a bunch of circles glued together. I will (hopefully) be done with it by the next round of questin'.

I love it so much I am requesting you illustrate the steam tank brigade. You don't have to, but if your portrait of a stupid herbivore kicks this much ass, the war picture will make my eyes explode into candy.

I think you are vastly overestimating my ability to make things awesome, but I shall do my best. So the list right now is:
    Demon of the Deep
    STEAMPUNK'D MAYA
Original one that is half done (I swear teacher, the dog ate my pixels)

How long did it take you to make that first picture?

Oh, I dunno. Couple hours here, couple hours there. I haven't really been keeping a close track. I just work on it a little bit each night when I can. Last night was mostly a wash since I was sketching up the building designs. A large chunk of the time was getting the figure close to something resembling a human (I am terrible at the human form). The shields ended up eating a big chunk of time too, but I do love me some excessive level of detail. I keep shooting myself in the foot by doing things in color. Takes way more time than a thread can handle at the speed I draw.

I may miss the Friday thread since that is really early in my time zone. If I am not there, I should be back on Saturday for fun times. Fret not, however, I will get you the pictures in one of the weekend threads. Worst comes to worst I will tack them onto the end of the thread (if it is still up). But have a good time at your shin-dig on Friday. Socializing off the interwebs is always a good idea.
