You spend the rest of your day alternating between work and rest, lugging the rest of the Demon's parts back to the Hall and the storehouse, then cutting down some more trees to increase the available supply of lumber. The Elders offer both you and Kel the day off, but you both refuse, which they expected. No one was injured, nothing was damaged, and all that was lost was three crossbow bolts. In return, the town gained a vast amount of wealth, and a new respect for your strength.

As you work the short hours before lunch, you feel your 'natural' magic returning, slowly building up the power you need to cast. The fire in your heart has died, and your skin is once again chilled like ice, the way it should be. The Demon's attack, if it can be called that, was disconcerting, but it's something you need to be prepared for. In a world of magic, after all, not every enemy wields a sword.

At lunch, yielding to the prodding of the excited villagers, you tell them the story of your encounter with the creature, of its burning eyes and the pain it caused you, and how Kel saved you from certain (maybe) death with a single shot. He, in turn, tells his countrymen of your lightning-quick strike with an improvised weapon, going straight in for the kill against a thing that could have cooked you through with little effort.

Following that, you return to the windbreaks, transplanting shrubs while you discuss your plans for a magical icebox with Sahl. If you can start producing solid ice, you reason, you could keep a building cool long after the effect has faded. In addition, you resolve to assist the peasants in rebuilding their crumbling structures, and constructing new ones when the need arises, or when a bath house or smithy becomes feasible.

Sunset brings party time, with the men hauling out what meager supplies of wine they have and pairing it with a bit of Demon meat, something they say everyone should try. To you, it tastes extremely spicy, burning in your mouth. To the others, it's just disgusting, but they choke it down, unwilling to waste it. You get a break from storytelling tonight, as the hunters bust out the embellishments for another round of absurdity like that which accompanied your contract celebration. By the time the meal is done, five different children have claimed to have, in order: Eaten a chunk of the sun and pooped out the moon, flung twelve previous Lords out of the underworld and into a wall made of explosions, built a tower so tall that the top of it touched the ground on the world's other side, tunneled into a fortress made of diamonds and stolen three pints of liquid magic, and jumped through a time portal to save an ancient city and found this very town.

Once you're back in the cavern, you switch gears again. If you suggest that you can make solid ice, you better at least make sure you can back it up. It seems simple enough; just make a solid block, it doesn't need to fly, split into a million pieces, explode, or do anything, it just needs to exist. The line forms in your mind as the tablet whispers, and you extend it into a square, then a cube, filling the inside with a mass of cold. You focus the magic through the symbol on your ring, and in a bright white flash...

A solid block of ice appears directly in front of you. It's just big enough for a human to use as a chair, but it's a start. You think you'll call that 'Summon Ice Block.'

It was slightly less draining than firing grenades. Forcing the magic to create a solid, motionless object seems to be more difficult than making something kinetic. As far as you can tell, it's normal ice. It's melting slowly, and it tastes as you'd expect it to taste.

Made a mock up of a quick and dirty bio reactor to collect methane. I think I caught most of the glaring bugs, but if someone notices deal breaking flaw in the design, let me know. I have an alternate version that has a sealed stone chamber acting as the collection site, but then there is the problem of maintenance. Also, I don't know how well the pitch will hold in the gas, but I know they had it for ship building at the time. Bees wax (or equivalent) might be a good thing to coat everything in to get a better seal. I have no idea if this would ACTUALLY work in the real world, but if the DM allows it, I say we hand wavium this thing together. Also, I have a good idea for non-metal pipes using a composite of the Cow-bug exoskeletons, hide and pitch if we can't get metal pipes for sewage, gas collection, ect...

I guess we need a bit more practice before it's going to be practical.

I move that we do a timeskip with the intention that the villagers go back to town and attempt to acquire an anvil and the start of a smithy with the gems if possible. During this time we should be finishing the windbreaks and working on perfecting the "ice block" spell with the possible idea of creating multiple per casting or multiple castings per day without draining ourselves too much. After all, we want to be at the ready if something else attempts to attack us.

there are 3 types of bathhouses we could possibly construct that were used in Rome.
Hot, the hardest to build because you need a way to bring water into a pool with a room built under it. then you use something to heat the pool above it.
Warm, same as Hot more or less.
Cold would be easy. All you need is a pool, a way to drain it ever day, and a way to bring water from a river to it. A pit lined with stone and resin, and clever placement of stone trenches to and from it, and 2 flood gates would work as far as I can tell.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypocaust for how they heated the bath houses.

bio plant is a bit out there unless we can get some mages to help build.

The way i suggested to build the bathhouse, that would take skilled masons, lots of resin, and lots of planing for placement. (or a mage)

As an alternative, we could simply build a wooden tub like structure that could fit multiple people and use giant power to fill and drain it.
    >> Anonymous 01/29/10(Fri)22:53 No.7833564
    >>7833491

Possibly. I am working off the assumption (and it is a big one) that we are able to make the first chamber more or less air tight. The pressure from the gas being generated in the first chamber would have to be greater than that of the pressure vessel it was flowing into. However, since the pressure vessel can rise, there by changing volume, the pressure should always be less than that of the fixed container. That being said, a flap valve could easily be put in to prevent a back flow of methane. IE pressure gets higher in the collection vessel than the generating one and it snaps shut.

At breakfast, you ask Bem to take the gems to Fain and acquire all of the equipment needed for a common smithy, and one of the farmers tells you that they can have a set of gloves and a blacksmith's apron made from some of the Demon's organ skins by the time he gets back. The only weak point will be the thread where the pieces are joined together, but a double layer and a leather backing should keep the smith safe if anything catches on fire.

If there is anything else you would like Bem to see about picking up, now would be a good time to tell him.

He asks you if you think you've progressed far enough to branch out, and you respond by telling him about the various effects you've been able to cast.

He has a good laugh at that, explaining that he'd never been able to get that far with the tablet, though he might have just been relying on it too much and not enough on himself. He takes you back to his hut, and after rummaging around inside for a while, comes back with an old, dusty glove, with strange runes burned in a circle on the back and the palm.

"This belonged to a mason in one of the big cities. Used for something called Alchemic Reconstruction. All you have to do is press it to an object or a surface and visualize it being repaired. You stow the glove and head back to the fields, deciding to try your hand at a different kind of magic tonight. So far, you haven't used your casting for anything useful, so this will hopefully give you the capability to put your magical mind to work. For hours you travel back and forth from the fields to the forest, lugging back as many shrubs as you can carry. By lunch, you've got a wall and a half done. By sundown, all but the last eighth of the second field's wall is complete.

Your epic saga continues to unfold, with Jack fast becoming the hero of a revolution he didn't intend to start, and the wealthy, fat-cat lords of Aku's Earth stomping on him at every turn. Aki faces of with the Scotsman at the end of the episode, which you end with a cliffhanger, the apprentice holding the Scot against the wall with a magic shield and thousands of demonic minions approaching from the sky.

In your cavern, you test the glove, pressing it against the cracking wall and imagining the surface becoming whole again. Nothing happens. You repeat the procedure over and over again, focusing on the wall through the glove, but you feel nothing. The tablet's whispers almost sound like laughter as you switch to ice magic, summoning a block of ice the size of your head with practiced effort and laying against it as you sleep.

The night's disappointment is erased by the morning sun as you eat and set to work again, mulling over various bits of information you've learned from the books you're going through. The Demon of the Deep isn't in the Forest Lore text, but you didn't really expect it to be. Instead, there are things like Roken and Sarroths, resembling Tiger-Bears and Spider-Lizards, respectively. The forest holds creatures far beyond the pitiful, stupid averron.

Work progresses easily and quickly, and by sunset you and the farmers have finished planting/transplanting the third field's windbreak as well. All of the Flashweed has been planted, the meager supply of Beet seeds has nearly run out, and once the load Bem is (hopefully) bringing back is in the ground, the irrigation can start. With this in mind, you return to the story, having the Scotsman escape his captors by turning his artificial leg into a rocket and flying THROUGH the demon swarm, while Jack brings a local overlord down with an army of working men and women brandishing pipe wrenches and hacksaws.

After sunset, you meet with some minuscule degree of success with the glove, learning that the mindset required to 'operate' it is quite a bit different from that which brings you ice. You press it against the wall, imagining repair, and one tiny crack seals in a flash of green. You fall asleep almost immediately, completely drained. It's like going through the same thing all over again. Maybe once you've got a bit more stamina you can start learning more rapidly. Until then, it'll be slow going, but you're happy to be learning. You could never do this kind of thing on Earth, after all.

To be fair, I really shouldn't be using MS Paint as a pseudo Drafting/CAD package. However, it is still way faster for me to do things like this than to ACTUALLY build the model. The only down side is that you can't make a nifty 3/4 quarters cross section easily in paint. Or change dimensions at all really. But minor details.
