Here's the thing /tg/, it is poorly organized, and a lot of these features will not make sense without other parts of the game.

So, ask about anything in particular that doesn't make sense to you.

These features are being playtested, but if you see anything blatantly OP or UP, say so.

    There will be typos. Sorry.

While I'm slapping it together in an organized manner, I'll post some spoilers of the Advanced Classes, and their starting features.

d20. Seems to irritate a lot of people when I say that, but it's what I've been building.

Trainers use STR, CON, DEX, INT, WIS, CHA.
Pokemon use HP, STR, DEF, SATK, SDEF, SPD

Before you say, "playing video game on tabletop," since I get that a lot, the stat names are the same as the video games as a throw back, they do not necessarily mean what they did in the video game, save HP.

A friend of mine has been working on a character sheet that does a lot of the bookkeeping for you. I can vouch that it's not much more bookkeeping then D&D, for example, and has been greatly simplified and improved for easier bookkeeping since day one.

From what I can tell, there is no real evidence that this is a fifth gen game. Keep in mind that other take-offs in the games have revealed new pokemon (like Pokemon Ranger, for instance.) While I'm sure it'll be a fun game, I really doubt that it's a brand new fifth gen game.

While this is true, the fact that there ARE new pokemon, means that there will be a fifth generation to expand on in the same way as the original RPGs.

Also, they compared this game to Diamond and Pearl and hope to out-sell it. A spin off game could not hope to do this.

Hey Ownerer, nice to see you.

I am going to release the pokedex as it is now, since 5th gen won't be here for another year and a half and I intend to finish Beta by summer to release to the internet.

    >>7830244
As far as I know, all of the spin-off games are developed out of house. Perhaps by developing it in-house, they're hoping to surpass them. Besides, it takes longer than a year to come up with a whole new world. While I doubt it's a fifth generation (which you are correct, there being new pokemon totally shows that as an inevitability!), I'm hoping its some way to play through the entire Pokemon World. That'd be sexy as hell.

I read up on the ranger, I love the way the class sounds. Do you have any stories from your test games about them that would be interesting?

Also, I remember they only get one pokemon to actually own, but then can get a lot of wild animals to help him until he releases them. These animals however can not be used in Gym battles, does only owning one pokemon make it harder for a ranger to get a badge?

    >>7830335
That's totally what I want. While its true Pokemon is already multiplayer, I'm hoping its some sort of way you can play through a 'now' time line (since the games go back and forth...R/S/E, for example, take place during R/G/B/Y) where you can go through EVERY region. Trade in real time by walking up to people. That'd be fucking badass.
    >> Mike 01/29/10(Fri)18:33 No.7830358
Any ideas on how to convert the standard d20 abilities to Pokemon abilities? I got the skeleton of a system for that, but it needs some flesh.

I would actually like to see Pokemon RPG as a purchasable supplement one of these days...it is something I dream of.

    >>7830332
Concerning stories, I'll put one up in a bit.
Concerning Rangers' limit to one pokemon, they are only limited to one partnered wild who will follow them around, and potentially four befriended wilds to follow them around for a short bit (5 minutes). They can however use poke balls to capture pokemon like any other trainer - however in throwing a single poke ball, any befriended pokemon will disperse, except for the single partnered wild you have. Otherwise, they are not at all hindered and actually make it easier for them to get through routes without dying.

I ran into that trouble once.

I basically gave up and just made the players give me their character sheets for the Pokemon and I handled combat-mostly with their Charisma checks, telling them to roll d20s for each attack and me just trying to balance it as best I can.

Our rules lawyer called me a fag and walked out, but the others enjoyed it that way. Eventually the rules lawyer came back and we run Pokemon campaigns periodically.

Influentials are high level Psychic who can plant thoughts into other Trainers or Pokemon and then make them act on those thoughts. They can also use their power to make Pokemon believe they are more powerful then they are and improve their performance.

    Here are their starting Features:

    >Influential – Advanced Feature
    Prerequisites: Psychic, 25 INT
Ability Bonus: Intelligence Bonuses: +1 INT
Class Features: Mental Suggestion, Now to Act

    Mental Suggestion: Influential Feature
Daily – Every 6 levels gained, you may perform this Feature another time per day.
    Target: Pokemon or Trainers.
Effect: Roll 1d20 and add your INT modifier. If the total exceeds 20, you may place a suggestion into the target’s mind. The target doesn’t need to act on it, nor do they immediately know why they thought of it.

    Now to Act: Influential Feature
    At-Will – Drains 25 of user’s HP per use.
    Target: Pokemon or Trainers.
Effect: Roll 1d20 and add your INT modifier. If the total exceeds 15, the target will act on a suggestion on their mind. If the suggestion is entirely contradictory to their regular behavior, they will be hesitant throughout the execution of the suggestion. If it isn’t possible to execute the suggestion, they will fail trying. Using this on a target leaves discoverable psychic residue.

You get a starter, but that doesn't necessarily mean you start with only that pokemon.

A few of my playtesters brought their house pets with them. One brought a loyal Cubone, another brought his pet Venonat. Another one of players left his house pets behind and only took a starter because he wanted to start fresh when he was on his own in the world.

    Ranger –

    Navigator:
The most world savvy Ranger is the Navigator. They know well the lay of the land and can almost always find safe passage between cities and towns scattered in the regions of the world. The Navigator can even find natural foods in a forest and feed their entire party. They can lead their party to the most remote places with little effort, likely revealing the most rare pokemon in the world.

    Rider:
While some individuals may be content with awkwardly being ferried to and fro by their pokemon, Riders intuitively conquer each mount on first sight. These Rangers fear no storm, no great height, nor do they cease riding their pokemon as it battles a foe. Known for their legendary ability to steady any wild for an ally to ride, they are capable allies and welcome in any traveling party.

    Detective:
The Ranger who trades in their backwoods training for the city scene is a fine Detective. They speak in random conspiracies and rarely make sense to those listening in on the conversations they have while talking to themselves, however that out of the box thinking is what leads them to a question’s answer. They know where the shakers shake and they can find the movers moving.

    Ranger Continued -
    Coach:
Motivational Rangers can bring out the talents of a Pokemon to absurd levels. Coaches are just the type of Ranger who can do so. By working out with their Pokemon, they can improve their partners’ legwork, swimming abilities, physical strength; nearly anything they can physically do is done better when a Coach is helping them.

    Special Operations:
Not many people can say they've had the equipment to, or had the guts to stand in the way of a hyper beam on purpose. These elite Rangers, members of Special Operations, prefer to have the situation under control before an incident occurs. As the topmost branch of the Rangers, before Captains, They command a different sort of respect, equal to law enforcement but arguably more efficient.

    Captain:
A Captain is the highest level of authority and an even greater level of honor to those who call themselves Rangers. The Captain, by presenting their badge alone, can command local authority, make an arrest or mark off an area from public use. The Captain is so greatly respected in the world, their presence alone is something to be admired, or for the Captain’s foe - feared.

Here is the Psychic's Starting Features

    >Psychic – Class Feature
    Prerequisites: 13 INT, 13 CON
Key Abilities: Intelligence, Constitution Bonuses: +1 INT +1 CON
Negligent Ability: Strength Penalties: -2 STR
    Class Features: Telepathy, Telekinesis

    Telekinesis: Psychic Feature
    At-Will
Target: Any object that you may lift.
Effect: Add your INT and CON modifiers and multiply the total by 5 pounds. This represents the weight you may lift and items you may target with Telekinesis. Multiply your INT and CON modifiers then multiply that product by 3-meters. This is how far the target can be.

    Telepathy: Psychic Feature
    At-Will
Target: Any other human, some may be immune to Telepathy
Effect: You may read the surface thoughts of other humans, as well as project your surface thoughts to other humans.

The Psychic rollplay wise is a strong support character out of any official battles. Its main stats are INT and CON, using the INT for psychic damage and CON for HP gain since using attacks drains the user's HP. Because the Psychic is able to apply force with their mind and Telekinesis, its dump stat is STR.

Personally I would only stat the trainers in a BESM Mind/Body/Spirit type thing, and the Pokemon with the ATK/SPATK/DEF/SPDEF/SPD. Additionally, classes would just provide either additional synergy, distribution of skills, and not actual powers.

I think, how Classes work need explanation.

Each time you level up until level 10, you gain one stat point and one feature. You may pick any feature you meet the prerequisites for. However some Features are Special Features. You may obtain up to 3 Special Features for your character. Special Features are important because they unlock several Features for you to obtain. Special Features are Class Features and Advanced Features.

What this means is that you can potentially triple class, if you meet the prerequisites to do so. You could also take two classes and one advanced class, or take one Class Feature and two Advanced Features which branch from that Class.

    >Captain – Advanced Feature
Prerequisites: Ranger, Spec. Ops. Member or Detective for at least 4 months
Ability Bonus: Charisma Bonuses: +1 CHA
    Class Features: Authority Figure, Commander

    Authority Figure:
    Static Captain Feature
    Trigger: Identification request or need.
Effect: You are a Captain, from the region of you choice. When outside of that district you have less authority and are out of jurisdiction. You may still perform as an officer depending on the local laws. Add your CHA modifier twice when making a check related to CHA.

    Commander: Captain Feature
    Static
    Target: Police officers or Rangers.
Effect: You can give commands to police officers and Rangers and they are obligated to act. A police chief may overrule your commands to their officers; no one may overrule your command to Rangers.

Captain is the only Advanced class that actually requires another Advanced class. This means that in order to obtain Captain, you must use your first Special Feature on Ranger Class, then get either Detective or Spec. Ops. Member, then get Captain. Captain is very inaccessible because you can get away with virtually anything at this point. You're basically a regional captain of the entire police force.

You gain Special Features at any time you can get a regular Feature, but cannot get more then 3.

Special Features are Class/Advanced Class Features. If you didn't want that Feature, you picked the wrong class.

You do not immediately start with a class at level 0. This is because I want players to have a chance to change their mind depending on where the GM goes with their campaign. Also, no one leaves Oak's Office and immediately wants to collect them all or coordinate - there is a moment where they figure out what they want to do, then they pursue it.

At this point, I think it'd be up to the player. Hopefully we won't have ass hole during a Ranger Campaign take Captain just to tell everyone to kill themselves.

The Commander thing was more for NPCs. GM would probably have to do a house ruling for a Captain who is plainly abusing their position. On the other hand they could just make life very hard for the Captain or just make Exploding Gravelers fall, your party dies.

In a Grimdark Pokemon setting, this is a recipe for disaster. But under normal conditions, with all characters of the opinion "no matter your alignment, do it your own way unless its seriously a bad idea" then I can see it working well.

But there should generally be a player consensus that its good, like when voting a party leader.

What has not been talked about in any thread yet are Capabilities. This is actually the only thing stopping Beta's completion and release.

Capabilities are individual tricks that each pokemon has key worded. Some examples are Phasing, Aura, Mount.

They simply say what a Pokemon is capable of doing, without the use of its Moves.

Capabilities also explain how much a Pokemon can move per turn. These Capabilities are paired with numbers like, Overland 4, Surface 2 or Burrow 5. They also have physical capabilities, like Jump 6, Power 4 or Intelligence 7.

    Teleport – Psychic
The user vanishes and reappears in a nearby area.
    Battle – None
    Self **
    Effect: No Target, Interrupt
Teleport can be used at any time. If used as an Interrupt, roll 1d20 and if you don’t roll 7 or higher, Teleport fails to activate. The user is moved 1d10 + 10 meters. They can move through blocking terrain and hindering terrain as if it is regular terrain. Moves that targeted Teleport’s user continue through the desired target’s space if the Move allows for it. If Teleport fails, treat it as if you have not activated it in the past 10 mintues.

Depends on the pokemon and GM's opinion I'd say. Yes Abra can take you with it, no it can't take your whole party. Yes Alakazam can take your whole party.

    I like it!

So for the moving through "blocking terrain and hindering terrain as if it is regular terrain" does it function like time stopping and turning ethereal for how people teleporting perceive it?

Also, another question-after hatching, at what point are Pokemon viable intelligence wise to be communicated with and fight?

The games indicate immediately but Togepi spent so much time being cared for that it almost might as well have had normal infancy time as a cat (but Misty could have just been over indulging it).

    Further details.

Alpha has been getting playtested for about nine months now.

Beta will be released with a cool black and white cover and be in indexed .pdf format.

At this point, /tg/ will say they hate it and tell me what to change.

    Beta will go through updates.

A bit later, Pokemon: Tabletop Adventures will be released with its Cover colored (The artist is a pro, I can't believe someone found this person to do it for us). This will be the Omega release, first edition.

We WILL be making supplements, which are already in the works. There will be a Bestiary supplement once 5th gen is out. There will be a Player's guide supplement, which will introduce a 9th player Class while expanding on the other 8 and all of their Advanced classes.

/tg/ has helped me a lot already. I can't think of anything right now that needs more work. I have a few helpers who have been a great help.

I don't get this about pokemon roleplaying pnp...

The battles are all between your monsters. Why do trainers have stats? What stops me from saying I am founding a new TEAM, on the concept that "Holy shit if we actually fucked people up with our monsters this shit would be cake"?

I mean, Psychic on the non-fully developed mind of a ten year old would be child's play. Walk into bank, Hynosis on everyone, walk out with millions.

You are expected to have a good or neutral alignment.Until a supplement for villains like TR is implemented I guess.

Trainers have stats because basic Pokemon is jsut trainers, but this has rangers, breeders, etc. and you have to train Pokemon physically and wander about yourself-Pokemon don't carry you and certainly don't talk to other trainers for you.

Trainers have stats because wild see you and see food. They will not wait for you to send out your pokemon for a fair fight. The wild charizard will fry you, bite into you and start feasting.

Also, in the world mechanics i'm providing, children are not allowed to own pokemon. Licensing is at 18. A child by themselves in a world filled with monsters? That's ridiculous. They'd get killed.

But what I'm saying is... I am standing in the middle of a gym, squaring off for a battle.. when my electevire "accidentally" Thunders the other trainer.

    He/she is fucking dead.

Why wouldn't I play that way? I mean, there are Lawful Evil and even Chaotic Evil chars in the games, which is what I'm basing my issue on. I don't see why no one has ever considered such a course of action.

It would be like designing Avatar:The Last Airbender into d20, and then telling players that they can't actually kill each other in scene, because it's a kid's show.

But even so, you are converting a game wherein a dragon attacks you, and your response is to throw a mouse at it.

Conversely, what stops me from saying I am a disciple of Koga, and I fight pokemon with my bare hands and ninja techniques?

It just seems like the whole game would be centered around an unnecessary middle man. Namely, the pokemon themselves.

I mean, if Jenny is a cop, shouldn't she have a gun? Shouldn't she be able to arrive at teh convenience store, have the asshole toss out a mudkip, and respond with two between the eyes?

In the game i run being a trainer is highly regulated.
The purpose of gym battles is to test trainers abilities to control pokemon and all gym battles are monitored by the authorities.
Any attempts to harm trainers with pokemon attacks will result in suspension of a trainers license and confiscation of pokemon and possible euthanasia depending on the circumstances.

Also, to all the other posts about Grimdark Pokemon-that's it. Its Grimdark.

If wizards police wizards, why can't cops with Pokemon police trainers?

For the Pokemon are killers thing, remember they are mostly wild animals who can be trained with some effort to understand human speech. They aren't born with it, but they have the apparent capacity for it. So Charizard ain't gonna nuke a town unless he has a reason, and that's the job of Pokemon Rangers is to stop wild Pokemon from doing it. Rangers have a top that calms Pokemon. They have the technology in this world to stop rampages.

As for psychics in banks...the bank must have ghost types wandering the halls.

Technology is abandoned in settings with magic.

Say Pokemon and tech are equal, so you get semi-modern conveniences for things Pokemon can't provide (TVs, indoor toilets, teleporting computers (very expensive, public operated)) but things like cars are more rare.

I don't think I understand the class system. So, you choose a special feature. But they're associated with classes. So... are you picking the class, and you get the two abilities listed? Or do you pick one of the abilities, and that just sort of comes with the class' other features (statboost, for example)?

    Or something else?

The way I understood it, only those psychic moves that specifically said "Using this on a target leaves discoverable psychic residue." were discoverable. Though now I notice that really it's pretty much just influential features which have those. I think I like that setup better, though, seeing as otherwise we have silly things like Telekinesis leaving it.

The specific thing I was talking about there was that Psychic Residue (feature) says you can avoid leaving it when mind reading, but other features (and, presumably, moves) should also be leaving it. It seems to me that this should allow a chance of not being discoverable for any residue-leaving activity. Since this would then be a relatively powerful feature, this could, perhaps, be split into two features (Psychic Perception and Psychic Stealth, I'd say) for balance.

Know what I think Pokemon needed?

GRADES of Gym Badge. Say you go to the Pewter Town Gym (Brock's place). You register the levels of your Pokemon and fight a junior trainer that is going to be an achievement for you to take down at your level. If you win, you are given a 10th-Grade Boulder Badge. As you do the harder trials, the Gym leader may come and watch you fight. By the time you get to first-grade (Brock himself), you would have to be truly mighty to face off against him and earn the 1st-Grade Boulder Badge.

Many events held elsewhere would require each participant have a certain number of badges of a certain grade, and use Pokemon within that grade.

Of course, entry to the Elite Four would still require all eight 1st-Grade badges. However, smaller competitions would go down on Indigo Plateau for people who have collected lesser badges.

    Thoughts?

I'd be inclined to agree, but probably limit it to like, three grades if anything. Gold, Silver and Platinum class perhaps? I'd say gyms should still involve fights with multiple trainers before the finale, but for silver and gold classes it might be more 'Garth - Silver Class prefect for the ____ gym'.

And of course, being an ex-gym trainer could be an appropriate background for characters. Maybe have a range of different backgrounds to choose from, giving different statistical pros and cons?

I dunno, haven't read all the previous stuff, could've already been suggested.

    >>7833909
An alternative is the following, which I've used for each Gym.
Gym Leaders place restraint braces on their pokemon, which reduces their power to that of the trainer they are battling.
As a result, fighting Blaine first will fights weaker Fire, and Brock last will fight a deadly Aerodactyl.
I've used it in two playtesting campaigns so far, and it's worked out well.

    >>7834044
Trainers do not add modifiers unless the Move says to add a specific Modifier. Otherwise, everything else is the same. When trainer take damage from an attack, they take it all - unless they have a feature which says otherwise. Trainers go first during a round of battle, at this time they can try to attack or use trainer actions.

    >>7835854
    I don't know if I like you.

It can. It's a big deal during the closing part of a campaign after the big bad. At the end of the first playtesting campaign, the players beat the big bad and saved the world so they were invited to the regional pokemon championship. They battled to see who would challenge the elite four. One was crowned a champion after taking on the 4.
