30 KB Vampire Bride Quest Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)13:11 No.7572858
    Previous thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/7541705/

A few months ago, you were the girlfriend of a hero, frustrated with his inattention to you and constant focus on fighting evil and determined to do something about it.

A few weeks ago, you were an aspiring sorceress, learning magic in the hopes of becoming a villain and forcing your love to finally focus on you fully.

A few days ago, you were a terrified and abused vampire bride, watching in horror as you were frequently tortured by the older vampire Adrienne and committing one dire sin after another in your injuries and desperate hunger.

And now, after attacking and killing Adrienne you have been moved by your master to the city of Itonia, where you have amicably met his other scions and begun killing lowlifes for blood.

    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)13:12 No.7572874
Your remaining injuries from killing Adrienne are significant; much of the flesh and muscle on your left side is gone, and your form is spattered with holy water burns which give you the look of a pox victim even when your more severe injuries are concealed. Fortunately, your vampiric strength and speed is returning relatively quickly as you feast on human blood. It seems likely that you will be able to move at full capability long before you have healed enough to look normal- or as normal as a vampire typically does.

Four servitors, summoned and bound to your will, are currently available to do whatever you ask of them- an assassin imp, fast, stealthy, and brutal; a scholar sprite, equally adept in the library or the wilderness; a mimir, a skull imbued with equally vast amounts of knowledge and self-absorbtion; and an air spirit, virtually undetectable eyes and hands.

Sarai, an older vampire who described herself as an assassin and mercenary, is allowing you to use some of her supplies and stay in her concealed crypt in the merchant's district for the first few days you are in the city.

Bryden, a much older vampire who has apparently attempted repeated rebellion against your lord, has secured himself a position as a noble in the city and provided you with information about a silver shipment tomorrow night.

    ***

You awaken. The murmuring babble of voices is audible even through the thick stone walls; Itonia's merchants have hardly slowed their business this soon after sunset. What will you do?

I guess the priority for today is to sort out a lair. We have three outlets for this:
    Legal purchase
Kill everyone inside an existing building and hope noone finds out
Construct one ourselves in some lesser visited part of the city IE sewers.

Of course the writing style is similar; it's largely copy/pasted from the last OP. At some point I might have to pick up a tripcode, but it doesn't seem overly important.

    >>7572978
You are currently in one of the coffins in Sarai's hidden crypt. Looking around, she is just awakening as well, and appears to be looking through some papers in one of the other coffins. It seems that she uses most of them for storage purposes.

You think for a moment upon the ways in which you could get your own lair. Purchasing one would probably require having someone else do so on your behalf; not only do you have no money, but you look fairly hideous if seen in detail up close. It is only the poor lighting and poor taste of the men yesterday that allowed you to trick them into getting killed.

Finding someplace abandoned or out of the way is an attractive prospect, since it would allow you to avoid killing people and possibly even go to and from the place unseen, but you aren't sure what would work. You don't even know how passable the sewers in this city are, or if they're infested with monsters or thieves.

    >>7573033
You really don't like being a vampire, but you are determined to live through it. Or... unlive though it, you guess. At least long enough to see your boyfriend again, even though he might reject you for your crimes.

Hmmmm, do we have access to any of our books on sorcery?
And did we, last thread, progress in our elemental-creation magics?

Animating a cavernous earth elemental may be a particularly fun lair.

Also, are we aware of any summoning magics that can be performed without a circle? Or perhaps a circle tattooed on the body somewhere. (Ask the Mimir.)

    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)13:31 No.7573133
Well, first we should ask Sarai and Bryden for a bit more detail on what parts of the city they consider "theirs" for hunting and influence purposes. That way we can avoid screwing them as we find our own niche.

And we should continue our efforts to find any method of increasing our willpower possible. If there's a local equivalent of a Buddhist temple or something, one that's True Neutral and won't immediately fuck us over for being what we are, see if we can go there and request to learn meditative techniques and self-control.

Other priority is going to be getting some more books of magical theory. We need to know how to use our powers.

You get out of your coffin and move over to the other vampiress. "Sarai, could I go... hunting with you?" You feel a twinge of guilt at thinking of murdering other people as hunting, but it seems the obvious way to put it.

She shakes her head and laughs. "Sorry, darling, but I've got a job to do, contacts to maintain. I don't normally mess around with finding people to kill. I'll be here for the next hour or so putting my face on, then I'm off for the night."

Well, that kills that option. What do you do?

We need to prepare for tomorrow - we should probably go out hunting today again to get into better shape. We should also consider pilfering the bodies for stuff that might be useful. Oh, and maybe have one of our summons stand guard so that we may avoid tragic accidents like that whore the other day.

We might also want to scout the area where the silver will arrive tomorrow, and come up with a plan on how to acquire and transport it without causing much of a commotion.

Long-term, I think a better knowledge of the sewer layout may also prove useful. We could use it to get away in a pinch.

Also, we need a better way to rid ourselves of the bodies we might leave behind as we feed, wether we like it or not. I'd propose the use of gelatinous cubes. Is there a way to make them portable, or could we have them follow us in the sewers?

Transmutation would be very useful. If we can turn the silver we steal into other things (like gold, platinum, aluminum, etc.), we can sell whatever portion we aren't using for magical components without anyone getting too suspicious as to where we got the marked bars of silver from.

I like where you're going with scouting a place to ambush the silver shipment. Good call.

Gelatinous cubes would require a summoning circle, and Sarai has explicitly stated that we are not to start doing magic in her bedroom.

We start a garbage disposal service in the city. By using gelatinous cubes. They eat raw garbage and sewage, and then process that back into useful raw materials or compost.

Actually, we could try to craft a specialized summoning circle that only produces gelatinous cubes. Then we have that circle cast into a silver amulet or necklace, which we wear.

The entire library was Rhiannon's, and she refused to let you take any of it out of the castle, unfortunately. While you think you know the basic theories behind elemental animation you will need access to other information on it before being able to complete your spell.

You know that almost all summoning magic can be performed without a circle, but the circle is needed in order to bind the creatures that you summon to obey you. If you just want to make a deal with them or let them loose, no circle is needed at all.

The thought that you might be able to make a tattoo work occurs to you, though, and you pull your mimir out of the coffin you'd stashed it in.

"About time! The indignity of being shoved into such a wretched box was beginning to grate on-"

"Quiet. Is it possible to use a tattoo as a summoning circle, if done correctly?"

Its eye sockets lack the ability to focus on anything, but you find yourself imagining that they are looking upon you skeptically. "Yes, certainly... the basic magical principles of a summoning circle are transparent to the medium upon which it is inscribed. But as a practical matter, only the smallest beings could be summoned unless we are discussing tattooing an ogre or giant, and any creature summoned and hostile would be free to attempt to burrow into the skin underneath it to express its displeasure towards the hapless fool who had attempted such an idiotic thing."

    That answers that question.

    >>7573133
You consider learning meditation or something of the sort to increase your willpower, but are not sure where you could learn it. Every god you have ever heard of condemns the undead, and most meditation and focusing techniques are the domain of various sacred types who would as soon smite you as look at you.

If I remember correctly, we can just cook the cubes up in a pot. Alas, I was thinking of them more as a long-term solution for waste disposal, something we should keep in mind for later.
For the time being, slitting throats, stabbing, and removing valuable possessions should be enough to mask the true nature of our deeds - I don't think the law enforcement will concern itself much with the bodies of some low-lives unless strange rumors about a shadow in the dark spring up. We should also definitely vary our hunting grounds to avoid patterns...

Hoping to find a location where you might be able to learn more arcane lore, you pull out Bryden's map. Only one library is listed, attached to the city's royal university, but you know that many wealthy collectors and most mages will likely have extensive book collections. Unfortunately, those are not shown on the map.

    >>7573195
Deciding to think on the matter, you turn back to Sarai, who is carefully applying flesh-colored paints to her pale face. "Put your face on, you said? How do you do that?" You hope that it's clear from context that you are wondering how she manages without a mirror.

She responds without looking at you, presumably absorbed in her work. "Practice, practice, practice. I've done this every day for the last forty years and some, since I decided that it would be a good idea. Originally, I had friends- live ones, obviously- help out, but they're long gone now."

You watch her work for a long moment in silence. Her movements are sure and swift, but you realize after a moment that she goes over the same places repeatedly, presumably in case she missed a spot and wouldn't be able to tell. You suspect that she would never pass for a woman not wearing makeup, even if she does manage to look more alive than any other vampire you've seen.

Yeah, the scholars sure won't notice something is wrong with us. We need some sort of disguise, I think. Although I doubt she'll be helpful, let's ask Sarai if she maybe has something to at least conceal our undead eyes, or a mask of some sort, that we may borrow/loan from her.
And then we can head towards the library, and hope that it isn't closed at night, or that it at least isn't guarded heavily.

look, the fact is no wizard is going to help us unless we make a sweet enough deal.

I could see trying to find a mage and asking to be his apprentice, but that's a long term lifestyle choice that doesn't line up with our goal.

No mage is just going to let anyone "borrow" his books. Vampire or not. It just wont happen.

You look at your map of town, hoping that it will show some indication, but all it reveals is that there are three main gates- north, east, and south. The tradesman's district, where you are, is on the east side of town.

With no other clues, you turn to Sarai once again. "Which of the city gates would the shipment from Sevdia use?"

She pauses briefly in her work before continuing. "The southern gate, since that's where the mines are, but it should never make it there if you know what you're doing. After it hits the city, moving in on the goods will be all but impossible- more guards, and too many people watching. If anyone is left with an idea what happened, the crown's investigators will follow their leads like bloodhounds."

"Ah... thanks for the advice." That changes things a little; you'll have to get well away from the city if you want to get away clean. At least Sarai didn't have any trouble getting you in and out before.

Thinking on your options and considering the difficulty of body disposal after feeding, something occurs to you. You pull out your mimir again and speak over its resentful mutters. "What is the formula for making a gelatinous cube?"

Its eye sockets do its peculiar cannot-stare-but-must-roll-eyes bit at you again, and it starts rapidly listing off roots, mushrooms, herbs, and spices. Eventually it finishes its list off with the skull of a raccoon, leaving you wondering what the hell those ingredients have to do with one another and why they make a gelatinous cube, of all things.

Ah, well. At least you have a method, and it sounds vaguely familiar.

You decide to head for the royal university library. Hopefully it will have maps, and with any luck information on the arcane which you might be able to use to continue your studies. You head for the door, then pause and turn to Sarai one more time. "I don't suppose that you would let me use your disguises?"

She nods and points to a small, metallic kit. "That's full of paints. The blue bottle's an alchemic trick; two drops in each eye and they'll look much less dead, but you'll lose most of your vision beyond a few feet. If you're planning to go anywhere but the slums, you'll need a lot of doing to avoid being stopped by guards as someone unsavory."

    What do you do?

    So, priorities:
    A) Find out where the fuck we are, especially in relation to the city the silver comes from.
    B) Scout out possible places for attack on silver shipment
    C) feed to increase strength/test our powers for acquiring that silver

    A) Ask Sarai for a map, or directions. If that fails, pressure the mimic into telling us. Failing that, try to sneak into the library.
    B) With knowledge from A), look at map, and try to figure out possible routes. See if other caravans arrive. Take help of summons if necessary. Find dark, secluded bit for ambush. Discuss attack possibilities with Assassin Imp or Sprite, if available. (Sleeping powder/magic/alchemy to take out the guards quietly by clouding their minds, immobilizing them, or luring them away) Fall back on mimir for ideas if all else fails (Maybe remind it that it won't get anywhere without us).
    C) Head to poor district for food. This time, try to actively lure in lowlifes with your vampire mind control powers as practice, and have a summon on watchout.

Well, I guess that makes things a little clearer.

We head to the slums, nom on another group of thugs, and then head outside the city. We'll dig ourselves a nice, deep, hole with our vampire strength, then carve out a side tunnel that will be in the shade. We'll sleep there during the day, and when we wake at sundown we'll already be in position to ambush the caravan.

Also, while we're in the woods, we can gather some of the components we'll need for our cubes.

Also, we're probably going to have to kill every guard on the shipment anyway, so we may as well use them to fuel our healing.

As for the ambush, we have the imp sneak in and cut the traces for the horses/oxen/whatever they have hauling the silver. Once that's done, the silver isn't going anywhere until we take it.

Also, prioritize killing any guard who's mounted up. On horseback, they might be able to outrun us.

And as soon as the horses are out of their traces, give them a mental command to run.

Upon reflection, if that Sarai says is true you wouldn't have much of a chance of making it to the library, let alone inside. You decide instead to start the night by making for the slums and repeating last night's activities in an effort to heal yourself and hone your mental powers.

You bid Sarai farewell and leave her crypt, pulling your hood up to largely conceal your distinctively scarred features. After that, it does not take long to weave your way through the trade district, keeping mostly to the shadows and avoiding guards, and arrive in the slums. Once there, you duck into an alley and call your air spirit and assassin imp to you.

First, the spirit. "Go inform the sprite that I need him to investigate the south road leading into the city for good ambush points. We will be taking a shipment heading towards the city tomorrow, and will need to make preparations." With a breezy murmured assent, it flies off to do your bidding.

Next, you turn to the imp, which is grinning wildly- presumably at the prospect of bloodshed on the morrow. "You're with me. Last night there was a close call while I was feeding; I don't want that to happen again. You're playing lookout."

"Yes, Dark Mistress! None shall disturb you as you feast on the living!"

Its enthusiasm and the way that it phrased its duties disturb you a bit. You don't want to think of yourself that way. "Just... let me know if anyone is coming."

You move deeper into the slums. This early in the night, there are still a fairly large number of people moving around, but it's easy enough to sit just inside an alley looking pitiful and watching them go by. You feel rather pitiful, after all, unholy powers or not.
    >> Undead Monstrosity 01/13/10(Wed)14:57 No.7574127
It doesn't take very long before a group of toughs notices your female figure, and they approach. Your inhuman hearing picks up a murmured objection from one, made on the grounds that your face looks "like someone pissed acid on it", but he is reassured that he can turn you over if he doesn't want to see it.

A little bit of hatred flickers inside you, and you shrink back into the alleyway as much to stop them from noticing your furious expression as to lure them in. You turn and slowly run towards the end of the alley with a faint feigned squeak, grinning victoriously as you feel one of their hands grip your arms as their laughter echoes behind you.

There are five of them, but that doesn't help them much. Your first takes the first beneath the jaw and he rises in the air before collapsing to the ground. The next two are thrown against the walls before they can react. The fourth gets a knee moving at unnatural speed to his groin and a vicious smile, and the last stares at you in shock before collapsing. You approach for a moment, puzzled, before hearing a small voice in the air. "Got him, Dark Mistress. Watching now." You glace at the body; the back of its neck has a tiny wound. Apparently your imp has acquired some sort of toxin for its dagger.
    >> Undead Monstrosity 01/13/10(Wed)14:58 No.7574135
You look over the bodies, and realize that the first is leaking blood from his mouth. A quick inspection reveals that your blow shattered his jaw and severed most of the tongue; it is leaking fluid vigorously. A spike of panic goes through you at the thought of losing even a scrap of your meal, and you pull his tongue into your mouth and suck at it in a grotesque parody of a kiss. The joy that fills you as he is gradually drained certainly leaves any kiss you've ever had wanting.

The next four, all unconscious or paralyzed, have their throats slit and are drained that way without a problem, though it is nearly an hour spent floating on the pleasure of doing so before you are finished. Your imp never warns you, and none enter the alley; it seems that you got lucky this time.

With a word to your imp to keep you informed, you locate the nearest sewer grate and drag the bodies to it one after another. Nothing occurs to your immediately, so you make for the nearest gate. It is just outside the poor district; you quickly get the sense that some noble decreed that the slums not be allowed to spread as far as the gate, and the guards spend a lot of time throwing 'unsavory' individuals off the main road. The scruffy, unkempt men, dirty and miserable women and children, and frequent cheap whores of the slums suddenly stop within a block of the gate, which is well maintained and framed by stone towers which you would estimate are at least thirty feet in height, though the wall that circles the city is only twenty.

But you're not giving up- you whisper again, more forcefully. She steps forward another few feet, and you whisper again. You realize that her face has begun to show fear- she must be certain that there is mental magic involved at this point. As your control weakens, your whispers grow continual, an unceasing demand to cross the street, and her steps stutter forward.

When she finally crosses the street she collapses, tears running down her face, but only long enough to realize that she has regained control. Once she has, she chooses a direction seemingly at random and sprints in it, panic written clearly beneath her sobs.

As you move back to the wall, you realize something- you've been thinking as though you were still bound by human rules of movement. You find a house close to the wall, glance around to ensure that no one is looking, and leap upwards with all your strength.

Your side gives an agonizing twinge, but you easily clear its roof and land with a suppressed cry of pain. From there, it is trivial to leap onto the wall and then drop down the other side. You spot a pair of guardsmen coming your way while you are atop the wall, but are fairly certain that it was just a routine patrol.

You quickly make your way around the city to the south gate, and begin moving along that road. It seems largely deserted at this hour, but after about half an hour of moving at well beyond human speed you notice a campfire up ahead. Three people, two women and a man, are sitting around it. They all appear to be in their early twenties, and while not wealthy, their clothing is well-made, so they are not poor either. From the sounds, they are having an enjoyable conversation.

    What do you do?

I'm fairly sure we sent the sprite. The reasoning was that in a big city his nature powers wouldn't be as helpful as they were elsewhere. Which I did think was a bad choice since the guy will probably take days just to get to the castle, whereas the Air spirit could probably have done it much quicker.

We need to find a way to interact with humans. We can't develop a disguise spell without a library, and we can't get access to a library in our current state. But we'll have to deal with someone living to buy our place, even if we can rely on sarai to sell the silver.
We need human friends or minions.
Could we maybe entice a bored, rebellious young noble ? Is there for example a graveyard where they play with candles and pentagrams for thrills and giggles ? What is the climate and the season by the way ?

They don't seem to fall into our usual victim pattern, but we might pick up some interesting information, or, should they prove to be helpless and unsavory enough, pick up some useful items from their dead, bloodless bodies. Or, if they are of the even more evil kind, maybe we could interest them in a deal?

    >>7574916 >>7574951 >>7574897
You decide to creep closer and listen in on their conversation. It turns out to be nothing more than trivial chatter- the man is telling a story about his brother's humorous antics while attempting to entice a certain lady into his bed, and the women are giggling at his rendition. It seems like the sort of thing that you and your friends would once have done while spending time together, and you feel a wave of sadness.

They would probably scream and run if they saw you now. Look at you- planning crimes, wondering if random travelers would be missed were you to kill them, terrorizing hapless young, destitute women with unholy powers- and did you really just slaughter a man for no better reason than that it was easy and you wanted the tiny bit of healing that his entire life would afford you? What a petty, worthless thing to kill for.

Filled with self-loathing, you turn away. Perhaps you can find someplace to hide the silver that you expect to have tomorrow, since you doubt that you can leap over the wall while carrying much of it.

But as you leave, one of the women calls, "Hello? Is there someone out there?" She must have seen you.

Her call reminds you so much of lost days, you can hardly bear it. On a sudden impulse and wild hope that they might just accept you, you raise your voice in reply. "I'm a-"

But you choke yourself off. Bryden had told you that there had been no Itonian vampire scares in fifty years. He'd kill you if you started another one, and that meant not revealing yourself to anyone who you leave alive. You don't want to kill these people... they bring back too many memories that you don't want tainted with blood.

You flee into the night, leaving confused, friendly voices calling behind you. Your legs flash beneath you with speed and strength you know they cannot match, and it is some time before you slow.
    >> Undead Monstrosity 01/13/10(Wed)16:42 No.7575408
Mentally lashing yourself for foolishness, you return to the road and pace it methodically for a while. Eventually, you find several hills and groves which you believe are likely ambush spots; your imp eagerly confirms that each could work, depending upon the size of the shipment in question, their number of guards, and if they have any outriders. Its gesticulates and swoops around as it speaks, creating graphic images of you murdering people in your mind that you're not interested in at the moment.

After an hour or two, your sprite arrives. It looks somewhat tired after its long journey to Rhiannon's castle and back, but you have it stick with you as you look for a hiding place for a large quantity of silver, reasoning that you might not be able to take it all to the city at once. You find a small cave slightly into the wilderness after a bit of searching; the sprite informs you that it is inhabited by a wildcat, but that he can convince it to depart without a problem should you need to enter.

That handles most preparations for tomorrow, and the night is but half gone. What do you do now?

You are struck by an impulse to return to the campsite, to at least try to prove that you're capable of human interaction, but you push it down. You don't really want to see those people, not in the least because such an encounter might well end in blood.

Instead, you return to the city, circling around its walls until you find a seemingly abandoned stretch which you know borders the slums inside. Before approaching it, you turn to the sprite. "Rest for a while, and then I will need a number of herbs, roots, and other such gathered." You proceed to list everything in the mimir's list that you can recall- you are fairly certain that you said everything. Your memory is unnaturally sharp, these days. It bows in acknowledgment and you turn to easily clamber over the city wall, then drop down into the street beyond.

You wonder if you can hear the thoughts of others, as well as forcing them to do things and projecting images. You spend the better part of an hour trying to pull thoughts from the mind of various slum-dwellers, but by the end of it you are fairly certain that the only thoughts you'd heard were your own. Either that is not part of your vampiric capabilities, or you personally lack the skill and mental strength to use it just yet.

I leave the neighbourhood for a richer one. I'm looking for a house I can enter discretely and burgle. If I happen to find someone old or dying, or obese (for the better ratio quantity of blood/number of unjust deaths), I kill them in their sleep. I also steal clothes fitting richer areas than the slums. At the very least, it might be useful tomorrow to have a change of clothes if fighting is needed. Plus, we have to get trained toour future dishonest ways of earning our unliving.

And at the moment, he'd probably kill us immediately for being a horrific monster in the shape of his girlfriend.

Either we give up on our love, or we decide to buckle the fuck down and not become a monster on the inside too. We don't get to have both.

Just because we're not embracing this and are trying to find a way to get better does not mean that we have not accepted it.

The point is, we are so physically damaged that we cannot integrate with regular society no matter what at this point.

We have to be healed up before we even think about trying to walk around passing off as human.

Furthermore, killing people in the slums goes unnoticed. Killing people in middle class neighborhoods does not go unnoticed.

And finally, killing people in their sleep is a disgusting act that is totally out of our character. Regardless of whether they are fat or not. And I do hate fat people.

You nod weakly and say, "Thank you... you take care as well." Hopefully you seem as ill as you look; not a bit of your mind wants to hurt someone who only means you well, even if her blood does pump tantalizingly through her veins. Then you walk off slowly, ducking into an alley and out of her sight as you can manage.

Caught by an impulse, you find yourself stalking the woman, wondering if she too is menaced by rough young people and thinking, perhaps irrationally, that you could kill anyone trying to hurt her. It quickly becomes apparent to you, though, that she is much more adept on the streets than you are; a group of toughs that you would have expected to try something calls out to her in a joking, if crude, fashion, and her response carries no trace of fear. Obviously there is a system of some sort to how the poor districts work beyond mere strength which she understands and you do not; she doesn't really need your sort of help. She would probably run and scream if she saw you kill anyone, anyway. You leave the area.

You brush past them without a word, walking quickly and determinedly, and although one of them makes a comment and moves as though to grab you, the others don't even budge. You're gone long before it can become an issue.

Back at Sarai's, you sit alone for a while, thinking, before feeling the sun beginning to rise. Your host returns with so little time remaining that you were beginning to be concerned for her, and there is little time to speak before resting in your coffins.

We know from Rhiannon's example that it's possible to feed without killing.

We are trying to learn how to do that, or at least we damn well should be.

We are practicing on the criminal scum because all things considered, it isn't as big of a waste of human potential if they get murdered, and because we're aren't yet at the point where we can go after the well-guarded rich shitbags who also wouldn't be missed.

If we know that there is a way to feed without murder, and we choose to murder anyway because we don't want to be bothered trying something a bit harder, then we're evil. Unequivocally, and probably irredeemably, evil.

You check your wounds and clothes before moving out. For the most part, your clothing is still in good condition; the few bloodstains aren't immediately noticeable and the open injuries along your side don't do more than slowly ooze, which has resulted in a faint encrusting of your clothes' interior with some sort of died puslike substance, but which has not really affected their outward appearance.

Your wounds are still significant; you have a long way to go in healing. That said, your strength and speed has returned to far above human capabilities, and it doesn't hurt as much to use them as it once did.

    >>7576233 >>7576236
You turn to Sarai. "Are you ready? I have found a few likely ambush sites south of the city, so we've just got to go there and wait. I'm planning to go over the city wall in the slums, so no one sees me."

She smiles and nods. "I'm with you, darling." She pulls out some black garments, but doesn't bother with the dark face paint that she'd been wearing when you first met her. You notice that she has a number of throwing knives strapped into her dark clothing in various places; they are much more apparent when she is not wearing them. Thinking of the sword under your skirt, you wonder if concealed weaponry is standard for vampires, even when they have fangs and the strength to rip out throats with their bare hands- you should know.

After a minute or two, the pair of you are outside in the fading light of dusk. You call your imp to you, and it alights on your hand seconds later- it must have been lurking about invisibly. "Go along the south road and find a shipment of silver. Return to me when you've located it."

It nods with a needle-toothed smile. "Yes, Dark Mistress! Right away!"
    >> Undead Monstrosity 01/13/10(Wed)17:58 No.7576614
You frown. On top of being cliche, that form of address held implications about you that you don't like. "And stop calling me that. I'm not a dark mistress, yours or otherwise."

It giggles at your comment as it swoops away, and you wonder if it will obey your command. Sarai seems to have found the exchange rather humorous; she's hiding a smile.

It takes the pair of you a surprisingly short time to reach the slums and clear the wall; Sarai moves with a professional swiftness, doubtless gained over long years of killing people, and makes right for a series of ledges that you'd never spotted, but suspect that even a human could climb.

Once you are over the wall, it is only a few minutes of running before your imp returns. "Found it, Mistress. Twelve guys, with an armored coach and wagon."

You frown. That sounds like something high-security, certainly, but it could also be a particularly paranoid traveling noble or something. Fortunately, Sarai has the answer. "Did they have this symbol on the wagon?" She sketches a shape in the dirt.

    "Yeah," it replies.

She looks to you. "The shield and snake. That would be the king's sigil, and none of the royal family are moving about at the moment. It should be the silver."

You nod, and the three of you move to the ambush site nearest the approaching shipment. Your sprite and air spirit arrive quickly to your call, and you notice that your sprite is armed with a long, hollow stick and some darts- obviously a weapon of some kind.

    What will you do?

Hell no. Having the main character go into long-winded internal debates meant specifically to echo the arguments that the players have already made would only hurt the game. Also, she has enough emotional problems without waxing philosophical.

I don't really mind the arguments, since that's exactly the sort of thing that this quest intends to examine. If you all could keep the insults to a minimum, though, I'd much appreciate it. You might even consider assuming the best of your counterparts, although I know that's asking a lot.

Head for the best ambush site. Take a series of deep breaths and try to convince yourself that you need to do this to survive, plus, if it lets you make a greater summoning circle it will in the long run reduce the number of people you have to kill.

Tell the imp and the sprite to stay overhead, assist if it looks like the guards are going to kill either us or Sarai, but to make sure that no one gets away in the confusion.

Ask Sarai her advice on the best way to attack. State you were thinking one of them should stop the wagon, either by cutting it loose from the horses or killing the driver while the other attacks the guards. Once the wagon is stopped they can then finish the rest of the guards off. Keep telling yourself this is necessary for the long term while you do so.

Yeah, except that I've posted to try meditating, and have been utterly fucking ignored on that front.

And I don't think that killing the criminals is right either. But since we're currently trying to learn control, and we're inevitably going to leave a trail of corpses until we do, they're the least bad option as far as things to feed on.

Also, why in the fuck do we have to become evil? I mean, evil vampires are as fucking cliche as whiny good vampires. I'd much rather try for Discworld-style vampire behavior, if we actually have that as even a remote possibility; the same possibilities as everybody else, except for the "going out in day" thing.

Let's put aside the question of evil.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)18:15 No.7576817
Let's asses our situation. We have:
    - 12 well-armed royal guards, with maybe a few more hiding in the coach and wagon. As our adversaries.
    - one sprite with a blowpipe and control over nature magicy stuff
    - one assassin imp that can turn itself almost invisible, who carries deadly poison
    - a stealthy air spirit that goes almost unnoticed
    - one deadly, experienced vampire assassin
    - magic missile and inhuman strength ourselves

    I say we
    - sow confusion
    - immobilize the cargo
    - try to take out a lot of the guards with sneaky maneuvers
    - immobilize or weaken the rest
    - and once they're all dead, hopefully make off with our ill-gotten gains

I think we should first discuss our group's capabilities with our allies. We should especially pay attention to mass subdual spells, or the possibility of enlisting nature's aid to e.g. spook the horses, and then stealthyly attack from multiple directions while making sure no one escapes. It would be great if we can lure them away from the road, as that would allow us to dispose of signs of the struggle easier.

I agree. As much as I'd like to read 'Uberwald Temperence League' quest myself, that quite clearly isn't an option in this world/setting. We're a Vampified 'heroes girlfriend' trying to survive in unlife, and find some way to do so without becoming a complete monster.

Now; as we're supposedly the girlfriend of a mighty hero, I don't think we'd have much problem with killing evildoers ourselves; seeing as our boyfreind basically did that as his dayjob and all we complained about at the time was his hours on the job. So 'getting rid' of evildoers and feeding ourself at the same time would actually be a link back to the BF and our past life, when things were simpler (slightly).

If all goes well, we might be able to drink from the four suvivors again in a week's time; so by the end of a month we've had just as much blood from four people, and all of them will still be around to feed off again at the end of NEXT week if we so choose.

After thinking for a moment upon various plans, you decide that you have an expert here that you might as well make use of. "Sarai, how should we do this?"

She turns to you and gives a soft giggle. "Well, I was going to let you run the show, since you're the nominal employer here, but if you want some advice... go in fast. We'll spook the horses when they smell us, in case you didn't know, and the smell of blood will do even more. Guards have armor, but not everywhere. I can probably take out four or so with knives before they realize they're in trouble. After that, just don't stay in the same place for more than a second. We'll have to run down anyone getting away, so watch for that." She points to your servants as she says her last sentence.

The imp speaks up. "I can handle that, Mistress. We've whipped up a nice little juice- you saw it yesterday. Stops 'em dead." It giggles, and the sprite gives a nod and hefts its stick. "I shall assist the initial attack with this, if you give the signal, and then attempt to magically impede anyone escaping."

Sarai nods. "Sounds like a plan. You're with me, then, sprite; you two attack when you see us move." She crosses the road to conceal herself opposite from your stand of trees, in some grasses that you wouldn't have expected to hide a cat. The sprite has no more trouble hiding than she.

After that, it is all just waiting. You hardly notice time passing as the warm night wind blows over you, though your imp seems restless in the branches above. The scent of the wild fills your nose, and everything is peaceful.
    >> Undead Monstrosity 01/13/10(Wed)18:38 No.7576959
Eventually, you hear the rhythmic thumping of horses' hooves, and the wagon and coach you're planning to attack come into view in the distance. Two guards flank each of the wheeled conveyances, four ride ahead, and four behind. They all look tired, but are armored in well-polished breastplates and have sheathed swords at their sides. Their only light comes from torches attached to the wagon and coach; you realize that they must be practically blind out here. You'd almost forgotten how difficult it is to see in the dark, since none of those you normally speak to these days have a problem with it.

You feel yourself tensing as the guards approach, wondering when Sarai is going to move. When it finally happens, you almost miss the knives suddenly appearing in the throat of the guards to the fore. You respond quickly, however- an uttered spell, and a magical bolt flies forward and catches one of the guards on your side of the wagon, throwing him off his steed.

Then you see Sarai moving forward with blurring speed, and do the same. You are almost surprised that the force of your leap can carry you directly onto one of the mounted guards, and you direct your sword to his throat without a problem- he still hasn't even reacted! They are so slow!
    >> Undead Monstrosity 01/13/10(Wed)18:39 No.7576966
Cries come from the remaining guards, and they draw steel, but you can't help but notice how few they are. More than half were taken out in your initial assault. You jump onto the wagon, then swing your sword at the nearest guard- he manages to block in spite of your speed, but the force of your swing throws his weapon from his hand. You jump onto him and shove him to the ground.

By the time you get up, the others are taken care of. Two seem to have managed to flee, only to topple off their horses when struck and paralyzed. Everyone else is paralyzed, injured too much to fight, or dying, and faint whimpers come from inside the coach- a glance inside shows an elderly, middle-aged man, probably an official of some sort.

That was shockingly easy. Even if Sarai did most of the work, you took out at least three armored men on your own.

    What do you do?

Or, at minimum, to make anything he says suspect. I mean, if he's obviously trippin' balls when he reports supernaturally fast and strong women stealing the silver, are they likely to believe him?

I was thinking of more of a vassal, he'd still be human, but would be spiritually or mentally bonded to our will. I consider it a better alternative than flat-out killing the guy, since we obviously can't let him go.

And since we can't even reliably make someone cross a street, I think the mind-wipe option isn't really going to work.

A cart leaves tracks, a cart is damn hard to conceal. Two vampires should be able to shift a few hundred pounds of silver (if it even is that much) in a reasonable amount of time.

The mental abilities only control the subconscious from what we've seen. We only need to create enough pressure on his mind to make him black out for his mind to be muddled enough to forget. Its at least more merciful than killing.

They had a "vampire scare" in the city 50 years ago, and the people in the villages around the castle obviously knew about vampires.
We could probably get away with it just this once, but if other stories about other incidents with a supernaturally strong and fast woman with a face that looks as if someone poured acid on it start to circulate, some pwople will begin to put two and two together.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)19:07 No.7577371
I would say ask our sprite to mix up a drug or poison that induces amnesia.

There are no obvious vampire marks on the victims, it would be easy to make it look like a standard robbery.

The fact that the one man is still alive and "conveniently" can't remember what happened would make him look very suspicious, and direct attention away from us.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/10(Wed)19:08 No.7577381
We really don't need another worry right now. And that is exactly what this official would be alive. We already have so many things that we have to do:

    Move the silver
    Heal ourselves without getting caught
Find a lair of our own
Find other means of learning magic
    etc...

We need to kill the official right now. We just murdered 12 people for silver -- keeping this official alive because we feel it will be an act of good is silly. Saving this one person isn't going to do anything, except give us more trouble.

The decision on what to do with the surviving man doesn't immediately come to you, so you turn and walk to the wagon instead. It's not as though he's going to be able to run away. You pull back the canvas covering and reveal a dozen bars of silver- enough to recreate the summoning circle in Rhiannon's castle three times over, and probably enough wealth to purchase a fairly large building in one of the city's better districts.
    >> Undead Monstrosity 01/13/10(Wed)19:14 No.7577484
Of course, not all the money is yours. When she notices that you're looking it over, Sarai moves to stand with you. "That worked out well." She reaches to her side and brings up a sizable bag the same color as her clothing with a thin rope attached to it- somehow, you'd missed that before. She slips two of the bars into it and then slides the heavy bag over her back. "That's it for me, then. The rest of the problems and rewards are yours. Be careful; there will probably be a patrol looking for these guys within a couple hours." With a smile and a wave, she runs off towards the city in spite of your stuttered protests.

That puts rather more pressure than you expected on you. You look around- at least a few of the guards seem to have bled out, and several more have had the imp pounce on them with its envenomed knife as they try to crawl away. You find yourself salivating at the thought of their blood, but that would take quite a bit of time- time you don't have.

You move to the coach and stare into the official's eyes. He looks at you in horror, and you try to ignore it while forcing your mind at his. "Who are you?"

He stammers out, "J-Julian Valentinius, assistant magistrate at the silver mines in Sevdia."

Form our past actions, it's safe to say that we aren't exactly lawful good, and this is a matter of (un)life or death. We have to make absolute, 1000% sure that not a word of this incident reaches the city. Sure, we can try some memory-manipulation, but even if there is just a small possibility that the effects wear off, we'll have to get rid of him.
    >> Undead Monstrosity 01/13/10(Wed)19:16 No.7577512
You frown. He can't tell anyone else what happened here... another idea occurs to you, and you speak to him again. "Forget what happened here."

He looks confused. "What? But you-"

Well, that didn't work. You don't have a lot of options, and while you don't really want to kill in cold blood... you turn away. Then you look at the paralyzed guards. There's no time to drain them, you can't leave evidence, and you'll have enough trouble carrying off just the silver. You grab a bar, just to heft it; it is quite heavy. You don't think you can carry more than four at once.

You turn to the sprite and imp. "I don't suppose that you have some sort of amnesia-inducing drug?" The sprite shakes its head. "Such things are difficult and exacting to create."

You sigh. That puts paid to that plan. "I'm going to the hiding spot. Deal with everyone here." The imp gives a gleeful squeak and darts into the coach, and the sprite nods solemnly. You grab the bars of silver and start running.

It takes about twenty minutes to reach the cave and throw the bars inside. Then you return. The bodies are still in place, but now all dead. Ignoring them, you grasp the next four bars of silver. Another half hour later, and you've returned for the last two.

As you depart, you look at your handiwork. With no drained guards or fang wounds, it should look like an attack of some sort. The marks are strange, but there are no witnesses... Bryden's mandate not to reveal vampires should be safe.

You trudge back to the cave, wondering at your decisions. Eventually, you stand inside it, your servitors beside you and a stack of silver bars before you.

    What should you do now?

12 bars of silver sounds like a load we should be able to carry by ourselves (provided we're not talking about massive ones here) without the need for a coach. I say we have a number of horses and guards vanish with the help of our sprite (the most unnaturally wounded ones), then make it look like a scene of betrayal by stabbing the rest of the bodies with guard swords. Then we pile up the remaining bodies and the coaches, grab the silver and stash it away while one of our summons lights the remains of the battle scene up in a flashy fire.

Take as much of the silver as you can carry over the walls and return to the crypt, hopefully it's enough to create a summoning circle or a greater circle.

Have the sprite disguise the entrance to the cave with vegitation, as well as any tracks we've left in the area. Hide the silver under dirt or rocks if possible. Leave a minion to guard the cave and head back into town.

Ideally we can just get a message to Bryden and have him send someone to collect the rest of the silver for us, and launder the proceeds. Less money for us, but also far less risk.

With the silver dealt with, you decide to return to the scene of your crime one more time. You gesture for your servants to accompany you, and move swiftly through the wilderness again.

Once back, you give the guards' bodies a quick look. Several of their wounds are obviously not inflicted by blades; those are the most obvious candidates for vanishing. The horses are all scattered anyway, so you don't bother running them down. Grasping the guards' bodies, and you take two of them some distance away, then return for two more. They are dumped in a dip in the terrain, and you draw one of their swords before turning to the sprite. "Conceal these in the undergrowth, if you would." It bows, and you go back to the site of your attack, where you stab each wound inflicted so that they appear to have been made by the sword of one of the guards.
    >> Undead Monstrosity 01/13/10(Wed)19:41 No.7577938
The work is somehow more gruesome to you than killing itself was. It feels dirty, like you're desecrating the bodies. You swallow and keep it up, however; you've done much worse than this.

The wounds that you inflict only bleed a little, but a cursory look might be fooled, particularly in the dark. Hopefully it will at least confuse anyone investigating. You move off and conceal the sword with the other bodies, now largely covered in thick undergrowth- no one will be seeing them unless they step on them.

    >>7577548 >>7577575 >>7577577
With that done, you instruct your sprite to conceal the cave containing the silver and return there, then heft the bars. You don't think that you could conceal even one of them effectively while returning to the city. You don't have any sort of sack or bag, just your clothing. While you want to take at least enough for a lesser summoning circle, it's not as though you have any place to put one of those, either.

    >>7577662
Regretfully, you leave it all to be concealed and return to the city, clambering over the wall without a problem and going back to Sarai's. You pause before the entrance as an idea strikes you. "Imp... when I'm feeding, remind me to stop."

    It looks puzzled. "What?"

You repeat yourself. "Tell me to stop drinking their blood."

It nods, and you go down to Sarai's crypt. You'll have to contact Bryden soon.
