30 KB Vampire Bride Quest Undead Monstrosity 01/04/10(Mon)22:16 No.7430848
Previous thread (quest changes somewhat halfway through)- >>7424288

A few weeks ago, you were the girlfriend of a hero, frustrated with his inattention to you and constant focus on fighting evil and determined to do something about it.

A few days ago, you were an aspiring sorceress, learning magic in the hopes of becoming a villain and forcing your love to finally focus on you fully.

And now, after being caught by a real villain and having your throat torn out, you are a vampire bride under the power of a great vampire lord. He promptly threw you in the basement of his castle under the charge of one of his other brides, Adrienne, and mostly ignores you except when you can provide him with a worthwhile diversion. Thus far you have only done so by being tortured for his amusement under the sadistic whip of Adrienne.

You are still gradually attempting to learn magic, using the extensive libraries available in the castle and the advice of Rhiannon, a mute, scholarly vampire bride herself. What your ultimate objective is, even you don't know anymore.

There are currently several hours until sunrise, and you do not expect to be bothered by your lord or Adrienne again this night. What will you do?
    >> Anonymuos 01/04/10(Mon)22:23 No.7430936
I'd suggest that we should study about divination and locating objects/people in the future when we get a little better with magic (if at all).

But I do not really know what to do right now. Somebody suggested something in the last thread, hopefully they'll post again.

If we can skip ahead a week or so, that would be nice. Take a look around the castle, try to keep sane, study summoning, pray they don't stop us.

Plan is to create soulless mortal bodies via transmutation and then transfer our soul and Rhiannon's soul into them.

Also, make sure that one thing we can summon is a creature that emits pure sunlight. Practice that one with some appropriate protective gear first.

When our body and Rhiannon's body are ready to be inhabited, we take out everyone in the castle with our summon and then we and Rhiannon move our souls into our new bodies and head out.

You have not attempted to explore the castle. The mental strain of recent events has had a dampening effect on your curiosity. You could attempt to do so now, if you wish to do so.

    >>7430953
You so wish. We can timeskip a little after exploring the castle- a few decisions will be required.

Gathering up your courage, you move to the door to the main chamber which the lord and Adrienne use when they come and go, an iron portal covered with intricate patterning. As you open it, you realize that it's extremely heavy- it seems to be a solid metal slab! You must be far stronger than you'd previously realized.

On the other side of the door is a large chamber, containing a series of large feasting tables and chairs to match. It looks like it has not been used in some time. A stone staircase leads upwards and seems to be the only way to go, so you take it.

Hundreds of steps later, you open a door to emerge into a luxuriously appointed hall. Moonlight streams through the windows to dapple the marble floors, and the scents of the outdoors are carried to your nose- and that too is much improved; it smells almost as though you are in the deep forest which you can see through the windows.

Cautiously, you move through the hall, quickly determining that the building is long unused except for the path between outside and the underground portion in which you reside. You move into the courtyard, and consider where to go. Most of the buildings, including the main keep, are in obvious ruin, and you are all but certain that they are uninhabited. One structure, however, has the glimmer of light inside it and you can make out the evidence of recent repairs on its roof. You believe that it would have been the guardhouse, although castle architecture is hardly one of your skills.

    What do you do?

You creep forward, moving as silently as you can manage, and gaze through the window. It's easy enough to make out the forms of people inside, even though it becomes clear as you get closer that the light inside is being shed from a single small lamp. You can make out the forms of at least six people sleeping on bunks inside, and if there are more beds that you can't see there might be as many as ten.

Well, nothing we can really do. The Lord might get angry if we hurt them. Or interact with them in any way. Let's get back to our books. It's safe there.

You wait for a long minute, staring into the building. Those are living people, you can tell. Standing here in the relative stillness, the sound of their heartbeats inexplicably finds its way to your ears in spite of the impossibility of doing so. It makes your mouth water.

Enough. You turn and walk back to your main room. You have no intention of doing anything to displease your vampire lord, and while he has given you no instructions presumably those people are there for a reason, one which he would prefer you not interfere with. You will return to your books, where things are at least predictable.

You spend the remainder of the night studying the art of summoning, and then retire to your ornate sarcophagus to sleep throughout the unseen day.

    ***

What do you wish to do during the following day(s)?

You don't actually have any vegetables down here. None of you eat anymore.

    >>7431543
You spend the following several days surrounded with books, attempting to instill information on the arcane art of summoning into your head. Mostly, anyway... every day, you spend at least an hour or so providing amusement for Adrienne. You're getting better at holding in the screams, but it seems like each time you drain the life from a bound human in a mindless frenzy you spend longer afterward sobbing uncontrollably. That's probably a sign of mounting emotional damage.

You have your first spell picked out- a minor summoning rite which should bind a "minor being of the aether" to your will for a month's time, assuming that you don't screw up the spell. You're about ready to try it, but it requires a ritual circle made of silver which you're not sure how to get.

Your ex-boyfriend had promised that slaying the vampire lord and stopping his evil reign, then returning to spend more time with you, wouldn't require more than a month. It's been over three weeks. That said, your boyfriend was known to make promises of that nature and then apologize profusely for breaking them, citing the nefariousness of the forces opposing him and that he was sure you understood that a hero's work is never done.

To be fair, this is one of the kind of things that he gets sidetracked by, so I'd give it even odds that he manages it on schedule. Try to find some way to let out that stress. We need to be able to let it out somehow.

Try asking Rhiannon if she knows if there is any silver powder in the castle.

    >>7431667
I think its important we summon this creature: it might let us communicate outside the castle, it could help us summon other, more powerful, things, and it could let us explore the castle in more depth.

As for how to get the ring, well, we could always ask. It probably wouldn't work, but if we've got no other option.
    >> Anonymous 01/04/10(Mon)23:28 No.7431809
For the sake of an alternative, we could attempt to learn how to transmute metal and then get what we need thanks to that. That would take a great deal of time, though.
    >> Undead Monstrosity 01/04/10(Mon)23:29 No.7431820
Hoping that she'll be willing to help, you ask Rhiannon if she knows where you could get some silver powder for a summoning ritual. She thinks for a moment, then shakes her head. There is none in the castle.

She raises a finger in a 'but' gesture, and you realize that the keep contained a mage's quarters at one time, and that one of the amenities there was a finely-appointed summoning circle. It may or may not still be intact, since the keep has fallen into serious disrepair.

If it doesn't work, you can ask your lord for the items. Rhiannon seems to think that he would be more than happy to provide you with whatever you ask, even bizarre things like some of the more esoteric arcane components. He would immediately figure out what you were up to, however.

You make your way up into the keep. Its interior smells of mold and dust, but the floors seem solid enough. It takes you a while to find the summoning circle, but you eventually do so. The gems which adorned it in Rhiannon's memory have been pried loose, and the entire affair is coated thickly with dust. The basic review is good, though- the rune around the core of it seem intact to the best of your ability to determine so, and it does indeed have a perfect circle of silver, albeit a tarnished one. With a bit of work, you could use this for your spell.

You spend the remainder of the night meticulously cleaning the circle and checking it against the diagrams in your available arcane tomes, ensuring to the best of your ability that it will work as you need it to. Just before the sun rises you retire back underground, avoiding the notice of the living people beginning to leave their quarters in the predawn dimness.

That evening, you gather up some candles and leave the main chamber before Adrienne has the chance to accost you for her sadistic games, then dash to your summoning circle. Everything is arranged as well as you can make it; it doesn't look very professional but to your untrained (yet obsessively learning) eye seems without flaw.

What type of being will you attempt to summon? The ritual specifies a "minor being of the aether", but you think that can refer to a wide variety of creatures.

Considering for a moment, you decide to go for a pixie- the one that you knew for a week or so before you were turned into a vampire, specifically. Admittedly you betrayed it by attempting to trap it when it was trying to leave, but if this spell binds it to serve you it won't matter even if it bears a grudge.

You focus on the image of the pixie as you remember it as you chant the words of the spell. It's tough to both remember the words perfectly and keep the pixie in your mind, but you do so... you think. As you finish, the circle begins to gleam, just as described in the texts...

The gleam of the circle flashes with a dark, purple-tinted light, and then vanishes. Standing in the center of the circle is a creature- that certainly worked. But it is most definitely not the pixie you intended. It looks like a slim humanoid, eight inches high and with angular features- that much is similar to your mental image. But the flesh is not flesh at all, but a coating of tiny scales like those of a serpent, and batlike wings are furled behind its back. It wears a skirt with a small sheathed blade which hangs heavily on its hips, and a forked tail is lashing betwixt its ankles.

Separate from that, however, is something else. You can feel its presence- you suspect that you could point to it and call it to you from a mile away. The binding worked beautifully.

The creature looks up. "What's this? Bound again, and to a dead woman? Just my luck." It paces around the circle. "Well, Dark Mistress, are you going to let me out?"

You're pretty sure that it would be safe to let it loose- it must obey your will in all things for the next month. What do you do?

You reach forward to the circle and withdraw the power held inside it, freeing the creature. It immediately spreads its wings to their full span- you would estimate a bit over a foot- and stretches out its arms. "Ah, feels good to be loose. So, what's the job?"

You look down on it. It is not exactly attractive, though not hideous, but it is bound to your will, and it does seem to be able to speak well enough... "I need someone to help me as I study magic."

It stops stretching and looks at you. "What've you got me for, then? Why didn't you whistle up one of them talkin' skulls? Those are pretty smart."

You don't really want to admit that you lost control of your spell, so you choose not to respond. "If you are no good for that, what can you do?"

The creature looks at you skeptically. "You don't know? Your basic assassin imp, right from the pits. Spying, sneaking, occasional stabbing, carrying messages. Poisoning. Mixing up poisons. A little bit of alchemy, mostly as relates to poisons."

You pause. That sounds... not immediately applicable, but possibly useful. "Can you make yourself invisible?"

The imp nods. "Well, all but the tail. You know, magic's tricky like that." It spreads its wings and starts flapping around the room, examining the dusty furniture. It moves shockingly quickly for something so small, and flits through the air with an agility that strikes you as unnatural.

You mentally urge it to answer the question, trying out this binding magic. The imp provides an answer immediately. "No. Vampires are dead, not really much to poison there. Even poisoning a human and having them feed on it won't do anything, because of... uh... metaphysical somethingorother."

    >>7432824
It occurs to you that you can at least use this imp to send your boyfriend a note, explaining what happened to him. He might be hard to find, but you could have the imp leave it at your home, and then at least he'd maybe understand... but what would you tell him? Where you are? That you've been killing people every night? He'd come to kill you, you know it. He might cry as he did, but he would. You don't want to die... even if you technically already have.

Oh, he's one of *those* adventurers. Shit. Lessee, maybe he can get his hands on a scroll of wish/miracle/true resurrection that works on undead. That way, once we let him coup de grace us, we can immediately come back to life. We can work to make up for those we've killed. After all, it's not /that/ bad; if we hadn't done it, one of the others would have. We can get better. We didn't choose this. WE DIDNT CHOOSE THIS!

You feel a tear beginning to form in your eyes, and end this train of thought. You don't want to turn into a sobbing wreck in front of your new imp servant. Back to assassinations.

"Pity. Anything solutions, poison or not, that would work? You're an assassin, and there's someone in this castle whom we'd rather see dead... as in DEAD-dead, not... you get the picture."

The imp relaxes a little. "Oh. Right. Power struggle type thing, I get you. Well, I could... hmm, no... uh... maybe... okay, I haven't got much. Maybe we could mix some liquid sunlight, but that's not really in my bag of tricks. Dark essence, y'know. Can't do it. And you'd fry in the sun. Got any other minions who could do some alchemy?"

You think for a moment. The spell took the better part of an hour, and the candles that you used did kind of vanish as part of the ritual, but there are plenty of candles downstairs and you have all night. You could go get some more and probably get six or seven more servants by the end of the night, assuming that Adrienne doesn't drag you into some sadistic torture. Which she almost certainly will, since she does so every night.

What will you do? If you attempt additional rituals, what will you try to summon? Will you use reference texts, or speed things up by trying to get by on your current knowledge? Will you avoid Adrienne, or get the night's torture over with so that you can get back to serious work after the pain?

It occurs to you that you could try to get a human or two working for you... either one of Adrienne's toys, or one of the humans sleeping in the courtyard structure. You're not sure exactly how you would go about it, though; the matter bears more thought.

    >>7433418
You order the assassin imp to conceal itself and wait in the circle room, then move quickly down into the main chamber. Walking as silently as possible so as to hopefully go unheard by Adrienne, you snatch a dozen or so candles and slink back upstairs.

Back at the circle, you quickly check the runes for any signs of disturbance, in case you accidentally damaged them- or, it occurs to you, the imp sabotaged them. You'd better be careful when giving orders in the future; not everything will be that accommodating, by what you've read. Seeing no problems, you place the candles and begin to chant your spell, once again attempting to hold the image of that pixie in your will while also chanting the spell without flaw.

It shakes its head, apparently startled. "You. What in all the hells do you want with- you're a vampire? And summoning me... poorly." It leaps directly into the air, passing through the binding circle as though it were not present. "Learn some real magic, you backstabbing bitch. During your former travels with it, the pixie merely laughed at any suggestions that it give you its name. Based upon your books on summoning magic, that was probably wise of it; if you'd known its name you would have had to focus on it at all when summoning it.

The pixie's leaving quickly. With little time to think, you call after it. "Wait! Please, I'm sorry! I just wanted someone friendly to talk to, and you were so great- I'll make it up to you-"

The pixie's voice drifts to you from the darkness outside the keep, where you can see it floating in the dim moonlight. "None of that shit. We had a deal, you broke it, and you're not nearly as sorry as you will be."

"Hah! You'll have to do better than that, you incompetent- hrk-!" The pixie cuts off with a gurgle, clutching at its throat. You stare at it. What could have...

The assassin imp fades into view, its wings beating furiously. One of its arms is wrapped around the pixie's face, and the other holds a short blade driven deeply into the side of its neck. The pixie gurgles for a few long seconds more, then falls limp, and the assassin imp takes the body in both arms and carries at back towards the keep.

As it alights, it glances at you. "Well, that coulda gone better, eh? At least pixies are good eatin'!" It smiles, revealing a startling number of needle sharp teeth.

You have no idea if the pixie is still alive, but a wave of remorse hits you. You had summoned it because it had been such a good friend, and now it was dead by your hand. Well, your servant's hand, but that was almost certainly because you had attacked with lethal force. Could you fix this? You have no healing magic, no way to...

...wait. You know how to make more vampires, and if you turned her, she'd be almost as firmly bound as if you had summoned her. You can do this. You grab the body from the imp and place your fang to its neck wound, sucking greedily at the still-spurting blood.

"Wow, boss, I didn't realize that you'd be so enthusiastic."

It tastes like someone fermented summer and dumped it into the pixie's veins; it takes all your willpower to stop drinking and bite your palm, then squeeze blood into the pixie's slack jaw.

"Wait, what? Mistress, are you seriously trying to- can that even happen?"

You have no idea if that worked. It would take hours for her to awaken in any case. You stand. "Guard the body. Do not damage her any further. If she awakens, restrain her. If not... I'll be back with further instructions."

Your assassin imp watches you stride off with a puzzled look on its face and a wistful glance at the corpse of the pixie.

The hours pass in agony, and you can't help but feel on some level that you deserve it. As you feast on the blood of a boy whose only crime was being present while you were hungry, you try to fight back the bliss that tells you how feeling the sweet bloodflow on your tongue is the greatest good you have left with thoughts of your own evils, but it's futile. The tears streaming down your cheeks fade as the blood streams down your throat, and you lean against the wall laughing in euphoric joy until you realize what you're doing and break down sobbing.

On some level, you must have known that it wouldn't work, but you had still hoped... hoped that you could somehow turn back time by bringing a companion of whom you had fond memories back to you. That hadn't worked at all, and you instead find yourself feeling a gnawing emptiness in your heart.

"Fine. If pixies have anything with alchemical properties you can make use of, take them and store them appropriately. Then bury the body somewhere out of the way in the courtyard. Show me where you put the grave tomorrow."

You were pleased with your use of the missile spell yesterday; you suspect that with a little more study you'll be able to use it completely reliably.

Some time later, Adrienne takes you. Some time after that, you are back in the library with the books, where nothing hurts and there is no one else to talk to. You look for spirits of knowledge which you might be able to summon- little things, the strength of imps or pix- no. The books say that mimirs, the talking skulls the imp mentioned, are generally knowledgeable, but they're immobile and often somewhat unhinged. Certain varieties of imp, cherub, gremlin, or sprite might qualify as well. The field is fairly wide open; you can select for secondary qualities in addition to knowledge if you wish.

You probably have time for two summoning spells, if nothing else happens tonight. What do you do?

I should clarify- you can select between creature types based upon their listed characteristics, but cannot control what you get within that type of being. You'd need lists of names and profiles for that, and that sort of detailed information on otherworldly beings is rare and utterly priceless.

So you can ask for something stealthy or combat-capable or whatever in addition to knowledgeable, is what I was getting at.

According to the books you've read, mimirs are more intelligent than others in their class, but generally somewhat insane. They also have absolutely zero physical and magical abilities- utterly immobile. All they can do is sit and talk.

If you really mix up your summoning spheres, your minions won't like one another, and will come into conflict- potentially fatally. That's about it for most spellcasters, but you have problems of your own.

If you summon generally moral beings, they'll probably assume that you're an evil vampire and begrudge you their help, unless you can convince them that you're not horribly evil- a difficult task, when you are regularly draining the life from innocents.

You reach forward and break the circle, speaking confidently. "Mimir, I will require your assistance and advice in my studies."

The skull doesn't move or reply. You frown at it. "Mimir?"

Still nothing. You feel again- you definitely have a connection to it; it must be there. "Mimir, I don't appreciate being ignored."

The assassin imp flutters over. "You sure that's a talking skull, and not just a normal one? Looks pretty beat up to me. Look at those fractures. All the smarts would leak out!"

The skull jumps in your hand. "Impetuous creature! How dare you interfere in my contest of will with my summoner with your crude slander! I'll have you know that my intellect is unmatched in any dozen spheres! A thousand thousand spells are contained within my bone, and kings travel thousands of miles to hear my wisdom! Why-"

You can't help but feel that you were better off when the skull was not talking. It seems to have no inclination to stop. You set it to the side and do your best to ignore it for now, setting up the summoning ritual again. A sprite this time, something with both knowledge and the ability to move. A flash of brown, and a sprite stands before you- just under two feet of thin humanoid, his flesh the color of bark and hair that of colorful autumn leaves. He is obviously male in spite of his build, and wears a roughspun shirt and trousers. A staff- well, a staff to someone of his height- is held loosely in one small hand.

He looks up at you and sighs. "Summoned and bound. How inconvenient."

You feel for your connection to him. It is quite strong; you shouldn't have any problems with this one. You reach forward and break the circle as you begin to speak. "Sprite, I have summoned you to act as assistant in my studies. What are your capabilities?"

He blinks, then bows. For someone in low-class clothing, he's remarkably formal. "I am an adept herbalist, lady, and can guide plants to obey my will or conceal me in the wilderness. I am also an excellent scribe and accountant."

That seems like a somewhat disjointed skillset. You can't help but wonder how it happened. Before you can ask, however, the sprite glances past you, obviously looking at something. You turn and find that the predawn light is illuminating your vampire lord.

He nods to you. "I thought less of you than this when I turned you. You may be able to provide me with more than pretty screams and a convenient shock at the appropriate time. I will think on this."

He turns and flows into the darkness, vanishing as silently as he appeared. You are left staring, wondering what you are in for now, as you order your creatures to avoid harming one another and to remain in the general area, then flee the light of the sun for your underground sarcophagus once again.

As your eyes close, you realize that you never visited the pixie's grave. Does forgetting about that make you more evil?

Do not in any fashion look into ways to kill the Vampire Lord. He is far more powerful than you and is capable of viewing your actions without your knowledge. Until you are much stronger you have no chance against him. In fact, the nature of the Master-child relationship may make rebellion impossible.

Not everyone knows. Only the imp and pixie have picked it out immediately. That said, vampires only pass flawlessly as human in exceptionally poor light in this setting.

Yeah, I'll be stopping soon and resuming at some later point.

It's not the sunlight itself that makes you need to sleep, it's the mere fact that the sun has risen. Very metaphysical crap that you don't have much of a background in.

You don't know how much time you have until your boyfriend and his companions will show up. He'd have had to travel many hundreds of miles to get here, and that assumes that he even knows about this castle. He might have thought that he'd kill the vampire lord somewhere else, for all you know.

You currently have no effective inventory- you merely take clothes out of the closets and chests provided downstairs, candles from the box of them, and make use of the library and summoning circle facilities. You don't really have any stuff to carry around.

    Boyfriends party!
    That reminds me.
Illusion magic. Illusion magic and summoning.

Maybe have the Sprite work with the Imp on growing some poisons.
Perhaps we can knock out the BF, then turn *him* into a vampire. Or mindfuck him.
Mindfuck sorcery is a good research target, too.

We have our summoned minions begin studying. Focus on summoning since we've got a nice system worked out for it.

We will become the Vampire Summoner, feared and renowned throughout these lands. Our fearsome creatures will patrol the halls of the Lord's castle and support his troops on the field. Our magical prowess will force him to acknowledge us, and then WE will be whipping Adrienne.

You start the evening by diving directly into your tomes on the arcane, going to fetch your new servants. Rhiannon is surprised to see the mimir, but raises a hand to you at the sight of the sprite. You get the impression that Adrienne has been known to attack and drain various otherworldly creatures on occasion, and that Rhiannon believes she would not hesitate should she see this one.

The sprite is uncertain what ingredients would be required to create a gelatinous cube, but is sure he could retrieve them from the surrounding forest, should he be told what they are.

As you are somewhat concerned about Adrienne, you instruct the sprite to go outside and discuss matters related to poisons with the imp, either planting relevant herbs or searching the forest with him for naturally occurring patches which could be harvested and refined later.

That leaves you alone with the mimir for your study of improved summoning techniques. While you quickly discover that the mimir has knowledge equaling or exceeding that of most of your available tomes (or at least those which you can read), it also delights in belittling your level of knowledge and refuses to admit when it may be mistaken. Still, its help proves quite valuable.

After several hours of study, Adrienne comes to retrieve you from the library floor with a smile. "It's your lucky day, girlie. The master is here to watch again."

I'm going to leave it there for tonight, I think. Thanks for playing, all; see you tomorrow or the day after for more of this.

    G'night.

And just as a note to every1 else: The master knows of our abilities and will expect us to entertain him in some fashion. We should learn some magic that will make things more "interesting"

Imagine his amusement if the whips doubled back in midair and struck Adrienne instead of us?
