About a year ago, I jokingly proposed a ridiculous home-brew system in response to someone recommending the Tri-Stat system.

Fast-forward to yesterday: I remembered the monostat system, thought of the perfect use for it, and fleshed it out a bit.

    Dare you face...

    ASPERGERS: The Misfittening
    ===========================

The Misfittening is based on my idiotic Monostat(tm) system. The monostat in this system is General Competence(GC).

You play a person with an autism spectrum disorder. This could range from self-diagnosed-aspergers-syndrome-but-really-just-an-asshole(10) to severe autism(1)

All skillchecks are of a roll-under type, and will be made using your base General Compenence + skill and/or situational modifiers using 3d6. This applies to both to everyday tasks and combat, should you need to engage in it. Failing these checks will cause you to have a tantrum, or at least an awkward moment.
Situational modifiers are applied by the storyteller/referee.

You also have three linked stat modifiers:Compulsion, Obsession, and Sameness & Ritual.

    CHARACTER GENERATION:
Generating your Monostat: roll 1d10 and record your General Competence(GC) rating.

    A rough guide to how screwed you are;
1-2 Severe Autism: You cannot interact in a normal fashion with other people, and will automatically fail a general competence roll unless you have specific skills in that area.
3-5 High-functioning Autism: Given enough time and effort, you can sometimes deal with interruptions and strangers doing their strange things.
6-8 Genuine Aspergers: Life is sometimes difficult , but when you stick to what you're good at, it goes really well.
9+ Just an Asshole: You are a whiny spoiled bitch, but you tell people you have a condition in the hope they won't hate you as much.

You must now generate your linked stat modifier(LSM). LSM = 10 - GC

This value is applied to the following categories:
    Compulsion, Obsession, and Sameness &
    Ritual.

Compulsion - everyday things that must be done Just-So. Examples include ordering clothing by spectrum, closing all the doors, or having an even number of food-items on your plate.
Obsession - Things you know too much about, or can do really, really well. Examples include seeking out and memorising every detail of every "Magic: the Gathering" card ever produced or being able to accurately play a piano concerto after only hearing it once,
    Sameness &
Ritual - Things that MUST happen EVERY time. Examples include being out of bed by 7AM, dressing in exactly the same type and colour of clothing, or flushing the toilet 12 times before using it.

Each of these categories get a number of specific skills equal to your LSM value. 50% of each set must be extremely specific, and 50% must be extremely general (these are rounded up, so for example if you got a 1, you take 1 general and 1 specific skill in each category.) None of them may relate directly to interpersonal interactions such as conversing in a reasonable manner or writing coherent prose.
    >> hurr !sRWmX4fA1c 12/07/10(Tue)05:16 No.13062486
    GENERAL COMPETENCE CHECKS AND CHALLENGES:
Whenever you wish to do something unusual you must make a general competence check. This can include (but is not limited to) talking to a stranger, going somewhere strange or doing something that you have never done before,

When you must deal with a frustration you must pass a challenge. These include interruptions and breaks to your routine, ending an interaction with a stranger and particularly stopping talking to anyone about your Obsessions.

These both follow the same mechanic. Roll 3d6, and you must get under your general competence + appropriate skill modifier(s) + situational modifiers. Lets call this value a DC(Difficulty Class) as in recent D&D versions. If the roll equals the DC, you have an awkward moment (how this plays out is up to the player and referee) but get to roll again. Your applicable skills can be positive or negative modifiers, depending on whether it's a check or challenge.

A success....is a success! But if you fail you have a tantrum.

    TANTRUMS
If a player fails a check, they may not try again, but if they fail a challenge
, then a Tantrum ensues. There are three levels of Tantrum: Sulking, Screaming, and Catatonic. The level of tantrum is measured using the Level of Failure, as calculated by subtracting the DC from the actual value of the roll.

If the Level of Failure is less than or equal to their GC, they sulk for that many minutes and may not interact with anyone or perform any previously unplanned action for that many minutes.

If the Level of Failure is less than or equal to twice their GC, they will throw a true temper tantrum, screaming and stomping around for that many minutes unless they get their way. If the character DOES get their way, it downgrades to a sulk.

Finally, if the Level of Failure is more than twice their GC, they go catatonic and stop responding to the outside world for that many minutes times 10!

    EXAMPLE OF PLAY
Timothy needs to catch the train, but the station has no ticket machines, He mustbuy a train ticket from the station staff.
Timothy is borderline severer, and has a a GC of 3. This normally would not go well, but fortunately he has general OBSESSION:railroads 7 as well as a specific COMPULSION:stuff left trouser pocket with scraps of paper and card. It's a stranger but he gets no penalty as Timothy's player makes the case that he is comfortable with railroad staff when are they doing their jobs, so he gets no situational penalty from the referee. He must beat 3+7+7-0=17 on 3d6.

    rolled 2, 3, 4 = 9 - SUCCESS!
    Timothy has accrued another
scrap of paper for his left pocket AND gets to ride a train! So far, it's working out to be a great day for him.

But Oh no! Timothy has been talking about railroads, and his powergaming fool of a player has argued that in this situation the staff are NOT strangers so he's happy to keep talking to them forever. This won't be easy as his skill is now a negative modifier. his GC of 3 gets a -7 this time from OBSESSION:railroads, but the referee kindly rules that he also gets a +7 OBSESSION:railroads as he has stop and go ride a train. so it's just a straight GC=3 check. He just might make it....

    rolled 3, 5, 6 = 14 - MASSIVE FAILURE.

as Timothy failed by 11 - more than twice his GC - he's gone Catatonic! He curls up into a ball by the counter and sits rocking back and forth unconsolably for the next 110 minutes. But there's still hope - the train leaves soon, and he might just snap out of the Tantrum and catch it if he passes another challenge...

Perhaps you should confront an autist before making assumptions that autists are exactly what the diagnose describes. No autist is alike, and the diagnoses are just used to describe their level of functionality, but since cross-diagnoses doesn't exist people sometimes get put in categories temporarily because it contains the most fitting symptons. Their diagnose doesn't describe how smart they are, just how well they do in society.

That said, ya I'm a case of infantile autism (severe as you call it) that has the same functional social level as an aspergers. I'm not saying that you should drop your idea, I actually kind of like it, but i think you might want to rethink how a person with autism really is.

It's based on irony, it's not like the creator doesn't know that all autistic people are different. Think of it as... Internet Autism compared to Real Life Autism, two entirely different things. It's like the movie "Psycho", although the main villain is a murderous freak, most psychopaths never kill anyone, in fact, higher CEO's often have a strain of psychopathy, as the lack of sympathy makes it easier to make those decisions that give a company a boost, but perhaps cuts a third of the workforce.

Hi. I'm a diagnosed autist, with multiple psychologists and psychiatrists agreeing. I am probably a 5-7 on the statline above.

I am not offended by this game in any way. And after my group therapy session, where 4 of us normally then go to the cafeteria at the VA clinic where its held to play magic, I will bring up this game and see if they want to play. I know two them are avid roleplayers, finding it to be the only way they can express themselves when dealing with people outside of group in person with any level of comfort.

I like the Just An Asshole rank. I know two guys.

One of them was diagnosed with autism as a child. Everyone in his family also has autism. It is supposedly more severe than aspergers but presumably still very high functioning. That guy used to design planes, now he's a mechanic in the armed forces. He's had to take prescription drugs and I've seen him freak out and get upset (although not a tantrum - he seemed to freak out because he felt like he was going to tantrum and he got frustrated that he has to deal with shit like that when other people don't). He's fundamentally a nice guy even though he sometimes annoys people by talking too much or about stuff they don't care about.

The other guy sits at home all day drawing bad furry porn and complaining about how the world doesn't give him everything that he thinks he's owed by it. Nobody appreciates him and WAAH all women are whores because they don't want to sleep with him. Last year his doctor suggested that perhaps some of his problems stem from a mild form of autism, perhaps aspergers. As far as I know he hasn't had a second diagnosis which I believe is required to be officially labelled autistic, but all the same he now adds "by the way, don't make fun of me, it isn't my fault I'm autistic" onto the end of all of his shitty, disturbing blogs.
    >> Anonymous 12/07/10(Tue)05:51 No.13062669
Its my opinion that most of the people that are declared as being on the autism/aspergers spectrum are not suffering from any neurological disorder. More than likely they weren't taught proper coping, rationalization, and social skills when they were young, and so they end up growing into looooosers that are either labeled or label themselves as having the condition as almost an excuse for why they are all messed up. Though, I imagine a number of the more full blown autistics are probably legit cases, but most of the people below that, i highly doubt it.

It's tricky, but that's why you need more than one doctor to diagnose you. If somebody has more than one doctor doing the diagnosis, they're probably legit. Anyone who throws out their autism for all to see just because they've got one doctor wondering is just an asshole though.

Any game system which has this degree of simplification (you only get one stat!) is not really be much of simulation. This is mostly a joke, and this mostly (badly) models social interactions...How they actually behave is mostly a roleplay issue, not a roll-play issue. Those genuinely-diagnosed autists I have known have been extremely intelligent, and autism is only included because it's the other end of the scale from aspergers.

Psychopathy doesn't actually exist.. it's a word used by the media to describe one of 2 conditions, Antisocial Personality Disorder or Schizophrenia. His citation of the movie Psycho where the main character hallucinates that his mother is having him kill is quite obviously an example of Psychopathy being used to mean Schizophrenia (seeing as Hallucinations are the most commonly known symptom of schizophrenia), so my original insinuation and question stand.

As for psychopathy not existing, i wouldn't say that. It would seem to fall on the same spectrum as sociopathy and narcissism. As they all share varying types of disregard/objectification for others and no small amount of selfishness.

CEO's are actually perfectly functional people who end up in their jobs because they are more capable than their competitors.

The corporations = psychopathy argument is perpetuated by the far leftists such as Naomi Klein and Noam Chomsky, and refers to how the corporation as a whole, not its CEO, behaves in regards to society. Even those bitter leftists are not stupid enough to claim that CEO's commonly have some kind of mental defects.

Not entirely true. Psychopathy does not denote Antisocial Personality Disorder, however, it is often confused with it, because most people do not realise Psychopathy isn't in the DSM. Psycopathy does have a number of posited features and symptoms, some neurological and some behavioural, it's quite interesting. There is also definitely some literature devoted to the idea that Psycopathy might be rampant in very succesful CEO's and the like, and it's a 'different kind' of Psycopathy because the sample from which we study and get our information from is a biased sample i.e. they've all been caught committing shocking crimes.

I had a few interesting essays and papers on this subject, the only one I can remember off the top of my head is Robert Hare's Hare 'Without Conscience'

What? No Psychopathy was in the DSM until 1980, the DSM-III removed the word Psychopathy and replaced it with Anti-Social Personality disorder, like they have done with many disorders in an attempt to sanitize them by removing negative social stigma... so you're wrong on the science side.

You're also wrong on the media side as Psychopathy was simply a colloquialism used to describe people who fit either Anti-Social or Schizophrenic typology. This can be perfectly illustrated by the fact that the movie Psycho is named as such.

Also please site Peer reviewed journal articles as sources, not books about a few specific individuals.

    okay then -

    GET BACK TO YOUR HUGBOX.
Hug Machines are large, non-portable devices which have a strongly calming effect. A few couple of minutes in a hugbox can cancel a tantrum of any scale, provided one is available (and the character can be placed in it.)

In a GC Check, this reduces a failure result to that of an extended Awkward Moment, and another attempt at the check may be made. Failed challenges cannot be retaken in this manner, as the other person was too weirded out.

any more suggestions for rules additions?

If could be bothered, I'd make Compulsion, Obsession, and Sameness & Ritual tables for random skill generation, but that would be far too much work - they'd have to be massive to avoid repetition, particularly if someone has a GC of 1. at least 100 for each general and specific skillset.

I'm also thinkning of alternate character generation rules where you roll a seperate d6 each for the number of skills needed - not sure though, as it can potentially ruin the balancing mechanism.

You should give LSM skill bonuses a 1.5 multiplier whenever they're a positive modifier; otherwise a higher GC is completely superior to a lower GC in every way possible. >CWC fanclub

The head of this fanclub would inevitably be a strange variation of Chris-chan. If he has a fanclub, then he's most likely more outgoing than Chris-chan to some degree. Not by much, but you get the idea.

He most likely got other people involved by expanding his made-up world to include them. They befriended one another at a stinky gaming store of some sort and were eventually drawn to the larger and slightly more charismatic "Mayor". The Mayor had created an imaginary world all his own, where he has godlike power and fiery echidna friends to assist him in his quest for a "super-de-cutefied girlfriend". The Mayor makes his new followers into citizens of his made-up town, where they all have superpowers of some kind. Bonded by citizenship in an imaginary realm all their own, they draw epics detailing their battles within this realm with magic markers.

Just imagine, several Chris-chans all gathered around a table bearing a map of their made-up town, a single vast Chris-chan telling them his plans to take over the town they actually live in. The only things that stands in their way are the "crappy cops", the neighborhood watch and the PCs.

Actually, don't imagine that. One Chris-chan is fucking horrifying enough.

    >have the Sperg fail a roll in a way that leads to physical conflict
Totally possible. Just have to trigger a temper tantrum with an NPC who will kick your ass. To win the ensuing fight you would need enough modifiers to win the challenge roll. You lose(and get the shit beaten out of you if enough negative modifiers pile up to cause the character to go catatonic. It's perfectly possible to make a combat character, but you'd need to have either a very weak opponent, surprise, or actual physical skills represented in all 3 categories

For example Jessie(7) is obsessed with Bruce Lee. This is not only reflected Compulsion, Obsession:Bruce Lee, but also Sameness &
Ritual:Must practice Jeet Kune Do between 2 and 4 PM every day, and Compulsion:Must dress like Bruce in "Game of Death" when sparring.

so, in a sudden street-fight against a normal person(10) Jessie gets (GC)7+(Jeet Kun Do)3-(not wearing game of death cloths)3-(opponent stat)10 = -3. Jessie is beaten to a fine paste. If only he'd worn that yellow and black jumpsuit today.

    FACTIONS
Factions have no mechanical effect on gameplay except possibly affecting the situational modifiers players encounter.

    Factions could include:

Daycare Center staff - Friendly, but they sometimes move your stuff.

Daycare Center patrons - Your fellow autists. You all get dumped there by stressed out relatives.
local Special Intrest Group - could be wargamers, historical society, the fingerpainting & rough sex club. They don't hate you. Can occasionally be relied on for support.
Internet Support Group - they love you and provide you with bad advice.

Sega and Nintendo of America and

Those-Assholes-At-The-Copy-Shop - Seriously, fuck those guys.

Here they are: and they're pretty freaky.
    "Bipolar" style Psychological disorder rules

This is not as comprehensive. you'll have to fluff it out yourself as you prefer for your mental illness of choice..

Your Monostat(tm) is not roll over or roll under - it is instead a target value. As before, roll 1d10, but half the result, rounding down. This value represents your general stability(GS). checks/challenges are 3d6 with a target of 9 +/- GS

Fail, and you start exhibiting Negative or Positive traits.

So a person with General Stability of 3 must make a roll between 6-12 to succeeed. Roll too low, and a Negative trait, too high and a Positive trait manifests.

Negative traits are not bad, nor are Positive Traits good. Okay, they're probably both bad in a social context.

when a roll is failed, immediately roll 1d6. on 1-3, the effect is self directed. 4-6 it is externalised.

Negative: This would be devaluation of self or others in som fashion. It always includes physical harm.
Positive: This would be Idealization. It always includes sexual activity.
    >> hurr !sRWmX4fA1c 12/07/10(Tue)17:08 No.13067233
    >>13067225
    >>13067225

All characters must specify a 5 positive and 5 negative traits. Sexual activity and physical harm do not count towards your required trait choice number., but are added in addition to them.
These are each written on opposite sides of a chit and placed in a bag. They do not have to make sense.
when you fail a check, you must draw a chit, work out if it is externalised, record the result. You will exhibit the combined signs of those.
if you draw the same pattern of traits twice in a row, congratulations. you have a new fetish. not necessarily a sexual one, but it is now a permanent fixture on your list, gets written on a chit and added to the bag.

Exactly how badly you behave is governed INVERSELY by how badly you failed the check. Missing by one generally results in overt behaviour. try not to miss by one then draw the sexual/harm chit.

For example: Mary drew external-harm, self-KITTIES,external-harm, self-KITTIES. She now sometimes pretends to be a cat and waves knives at people.

David drew self-sexual, self-mother, external-shout. he gets it again. He now has a sexual fantasy about dressing as his mother and shouting at other people. What a freak.

Self-balancing mechanism: THERE IS NONE. YOU JUST KEEP GETTING WORSE.
