Only trauma he had was from his time at the first world war.
That was story only though and it had no effect on actual stats.
I just rolled over 5 sanity ponts off my pool and from that I rolled the part that says short temporary insanity.
I got "Homicidal or suicidal mania".

    Shitty luck, eh?
Pic related. Those guys were chasing my character in trenches when he had nightmares.
After the dog episode they were repalced by dogs walking upright wearing Pickelhaubes.

    Look at my gif.
Look how the dog just walks around with that stupid face signaling happiness.
Why is it happy? Because he realized that we are nothing but mammals that walk upright.
    Just. Like. Him.
There is nothing stopping him from masquerading as a human.
Nor it is no longer shackled by fear. Fear that we, humans, are it's masters and thus control it's life.
What you see there is not a feat of dexterity.
    It's a birth of revolution...

This is the best thread on /tg/ in weeks

None of my characters ever went insane over this sort of thing. In fact, one of them, a private eye type (Named Tracer Bullet) had the opposite happen
Our party consisted of my dad, playing a Jesuit with skills in ancient languages, occult lore, archaeology, etc, and also a decent shot with a pistol.
Friend playing former soldier from WWI and university man, protege and nephew of my dad's priest. Decent in a brawl.
Wife of the DM had a guy, librarian and researcher, connections with police archives, etc.
There was one other guy too, forget what his deal was.

And then there was my character, Tracer. Tracer was a walking arsenal in the days when you could mail order machine guns. Tracer *always* had some sort of explosive on him, carried a thompson or shotgun, rifle, pistol, nightstick, brass knuckles, etc. A cloud of steak knives possessed by a malevolent entity swarming the party? Tracer pulls them out of the air and slams them into the wooden staircase. Zombies? Everyone back up the stairs, Tracer and some dynamite will sort this out. Cultists? Tracer's already behind them.

Tracer also started with a pretty high sanity and a very high power. So naturally I decided to start risking SAN hits to learn spells and shit, with the professor's assistance.

So Tracer and the professor are reading books, which you may suspect is a bad idea in the CoC universe. As the professor slowly loses his mind...
Tracer became *more* sane. Because of the way the rolls can fall, you can lose tiny amounts of sanity and then recover more than that at the end of the game. Our justification for this was that all these horrific secrets about the nature of the universe were what Tracer already believed, and that learning about them from elsewhere merely confirmed his suspicions.

tl;dr Private eye in CoC gets more sane despite doing everything that makes you lose sanity

He got too sane. Eventually he just started carbombing cult leaders, barricading buildings and burning everyone inside, sneaking into a hospital and shooting everyone before they could be turned to zombies, etc. The Jesuits, who had hired him to work with the Father, had to pull him from their payroll, but by that point he was a homicidal maniac with the skills to get away with it. Unfortunately, he had some really big enemies. With that much power and with as many people as he pissed off, he was last seen slaughtering his way into a cultist hideout, grabbing an Elder Sign and some other shit, and getting the fuck out with half a dozen cults, a Hound of Tindalos, Something (we never found out what it was, but it was nasty) and corrupt Chicago PD (not possessed or cultists, Tracer had just irritated the wrong people) hot on his heels.

The priest retired from field work to do research and organize Jesuit efforts to fight this sort of thing, the researcher got killed by somebody, and soldier boy was crippled. Other guy ended up just saying "Fuck it" and driving off into the night with Tracer's car while he was attacking a cultist hideout and stopping a sacrifice/summoning. And somebody committed suicide before they got eaten or transformed.

If you're in America, yeah, most of that stuff's legal. Even the Tommy Gun. It's expensive, but legal. Carrying around an SMG will attract a lot of police attention though, cause they'll be very curious about why exactly you need it. Smaller, less obvious, guns, like handguns, are far more useful.

Just put him up against something which bullets have no effect on. CoC has no shortage of those. Or just have the Cultists armed with Tommy Guns after the first time he guns some down. Cults generally have money, and they also have more people than the investigators.

Plus the Professor enacted some ritual that may resurrect him without his knowledge. What even the prof. doesn't know is that it doesn't give him a new body or anything, merely ties his soul to the current one...

I think Hastur is open to interpretation, but Hastur's status as more of an idea than an entity is what I find the most appealing.

I'll writefag a little to create a slipshod interpretation:

It's the kind of idea that, once one begins to explore it, it starts to grate at other ideas. The framework of normalcy decays in such measures that, whether it is the individual's perception or the actual surrounding that changes, the very world around the victim of the idea begins to corrode and corrupt to better resemble the warping of the view. This is what is often described as "Carcosa" by the few people who have explored Hastur, in some forms of different social media - oldest examples are in plays, operets, poetry and song, but more modern examples can be glimpsed in the now presumably lost original script of the highly popular video game series called Silent Hill, as well as several other "lost originals", from movie scripts to musical scores. Byproducts, watered down at the cost of the minds of intermediaries everywhere, appear in popular media regularily, perhaps acting as a gateway to the more widespread propagation of the idea of Hastur, and the unknowable decay it brings.

Meh. Started to get confused and trip over my own words at the end. Damn you, insomnia.

Cthulhu works better on BRP. D20 has a bad habit of leading players into concentrating on levels, classes, powers, builds and the like. It's pretty much in the very mental framework of the game. Chaosium Cthulhu takes a little to get used to, especially with the high margin of failure often present in the checks, but it generally forces players to concentrate on the "why" of the game instead of "how".

Not that it really matters since they're going to die anyway.

Beyond the first couple of editions, they're all pretty similar. Just some minor updates, really. It's not as big a jump as between editions of D&D, for example. The difference between CoC 3e and CoC 5.5e is about the same as the difference between AD&D 3 and AD&D 3.5.

It represents the total, complete and irredeemable situation where the player has taken the game and run off with it, rather like a bad dine-and-run customer.

The fundamentals of the game haven't changed across all 6 editions. It's still roll under d%. All that's changed is the trappings.

That said, I'd just go for the 6th edition. It's the most up to date, and the best laid out I'd say, but any will do, and you can run pretty much any published scenario with it.

Also, if people are completely new to Lovecraft, I'd suggest you also look at Trail of Cthulhu. The system's not as good in my opinion, but the setting information, and the sections on the various gods and entities are far, far better than in Call of Cthulhu.

Maaan, the Groke. I love that thing. I actually dropped it around my players, once. People who have punched out demons were scared shitless of the thing, because far as they knew it wasn't really malevolent, so they couldn't bring themselves to kill it, but they had no idea how else they could stop it from freezing them all to death from its very proximity.

The fact it had taken a bit of a liking to one of the PCs and wanted to hug him didn't help. Man, those were some very fun sessions.

    He didn't.
Just threw in the Groke as a side thing while they were on a trip.
Guy sells them the ruby, doesn't explain what it does, it gets jammed into a pack and forgotten (just as planned).
The trip runs into difficulties because it's strangely cold, I have people roll perception checks on occasion to see something maybe sneaking up on them, and conditions get colder and colder as they slog through the mountains.
Eventually, they get where they're going, and have to foment a rebellion while the city gets buried under snow, and the sightings become more frequent.
They eventually figured it out, mostly through metagaming when trying to sell loot for easy cash.
The subplot ends right before the last battle of the main plot starts, the character that manned up enough to go outside with the silhouette in the window to return the ruby gets a side bonus against cold effects, and the next day the players kill a bigass dragon half made of wondermetal and a shitton of demons.

It wasn't my game, but it still bears mention. Adam Scott Glancy, co-creator of Delta Green, told this story a couple of times.

A team of investigators is hunting an extradimensional parasite that lives in the human body. A cult is serving as earthly hosts, and one of the cultists just got killed. The team goes into the morgue to kill the damn thing, only to find... they don't have any surgical skills.

"No problem," says Player 2. "I have mechanical skills. I'll just wire up these jumper cables to the autopsy table, flip the switch, and zap the motherfucker."

"...okay," says the Keeper. "Roll science (to realize that this is a tremendously bad idea)."

Player fails his roll. Cables go on. Switch gets flipped. There's an electrical crack, the sound of a screaming animal, and something bursts out of the cadaver's ribcage.

    Then the lights short out.

As Glancy screams "GUNS DOWN GUNS DOWN NOBODY FIRE", the Keeper turns to Player #3 and says:

"You feel it against your leg. Roll SAN."

Critical fail. Player 3 opens fire, and everybody else follows suit.

When the gunfire ceases, half the players are dead, the rest are incapacitated, and Glancy is beating an alien parasite to death against the floor with his bare hands.

    Awesome.

It follows EVERYTHING: Lovecraft, Derleth, Campbell, Bloch... Generally, it veers towards the Lovecraft side of things though. There is no Call of Cthulhu canon, you take what you want from whatever source you want, and make your own interpretations of what's actually going on. The Malleus Monstorum, for instance, features just about every Mythos-y horror conceived, from Kthanid to The Thing to Xenomorphs to Dagon. You take what you want and you leave the rest.

Trail of Cthulhu, I think, does this best, since in its section on Gods and Titans, the only stats provided are for the sanity loss they inflict, and it doesn't just give one explanation of what they are. It provides a variety of explanations for what each particular entity is and why.

Plus, the thing about eldritch abominations from beyond time and space is that the players don't need to know the Truth, and if they find a book that tells them that Hastur is Cthulhu's brother and they fight or something, and they believe it, then they can go ahead and try summoning Carcosa in Rl'yeh and see what happens.

And yes, there's Herbert West references. The main rulebook has him statted out. And there's at least one published scenario I can think of that follows on from the events of Reanimator. Generally, there aren't any published scenarios which interfere with Lovecraft stories, but if you wanted to have the players save West from that damnably silent horde, there's no stopping you.

And Delta Green, which is a very, very good modern day setting for CoC, has the Karotechia, remnants of the Nazi occult program who used West's research to create "Resuscitated Casualties" to fight on the Eastern Front.

The gamemaster should always have a clear idea of what's going on behind the scenes, even if he is never, ever going to let the players know what it is.

the Dark Heresy material put out by FFG likes to take the "Ain't gotta explain shit" approach, and give you loads of information about cults like the Temple Tendency or info on things like the Tyrant Star, and then never explain what's actually going on behind it. Even if they offered a number of different concrete explanations and then the GM could choose one, it'd be ok. But instead the books blab on and on about the Temple Tendency, but never really say "This is what it is, these are the goals the members have, and here's what they plan to do." The last two aren't essential but the first part is. As it is, their background and actions don't really make sense. And the Tyrant Star; there's not really a reason behind it. It may be linked to Haarlock, but that's about it. And if the explanation is "It's Chaos, ain't gotta explain shit" then that's fine, but there's no point in going on and on about it.

I don't know how well that would work, given that CoC characters generally get a Bad End. Uncovering clues spread across generations could be difficult, unless it's a huge reveal in one of the final games of the campaign.

Well, I might use different systems for different sessions - GURPS fantasy when the party's a bunch of heroes hired by king Gilgamesh to hunt down the Phoenix (actually a horrible, causality-breaking flame-monster from beyond time), and CoC when they're 20th-century archaeologists unknowingly hired by the Cult Argent to find Gil's tomb.

That's why I prefer Trail's approach of the only stats they have being the sanity loss. Call of Cthulhu stats for the Great Old Ones is a holdover from the early days that's just never gone away. Back in them days, everything had to have stats. Admittedly, the stats are such that practically nothing investigators have can hurt them, but it's still silly.

Fixed. The TITANs went mad because they advanced enough to hear Cthulhu's dreams. The Factors are the next stage of the Mi-Go's Grey Deception. Firewall is what happens when Delta Green and PISCES and MAJESTIC get their shit together and decide to start working together.

    >>13054210

I think I might disagree. Sure, it helps when you're dealing with things that can be related to: human cultists, ghouls, Deep Ones, even the Mi-Go. The Cult of Transcendence do what they do because their leaders were driven mad after the failures of the Alta Vendita and they turned to Nyarlathotep to help them away from their humanity. That helps.

With the most powerful entities, you don't need to know exactly what is going on behind the scenes. All you need to know is what happens when humans interact with them.

Like I said, if your explanation is "It's an ineffable being from beyond the stars that makes the human mind curl up and die" that's fine, but even then there will be some method to the madness. And you as the GM need to have an idea of what that is, even if the players never figure it out. If you don't then your heroes will have nothing to do. Like the Tyrant Star in Dark Heresy: there's nothing really behind it, there's nothing the players can do about it, it's not clear what it does if anything, there's no way to even save people from it. So the heroes will go find other things to do and if the Tyrant Star shows up, well, cross your fingers and hope the Emperor you survive.

It's like a hurricane. There's no way to have a plot based around a hurricane. You can have your plot be "A hurricane comes through and the players have to survive" but they aren't engaging the storm itself; they're trying to survive flooding, deal with looters, whatever.

    Am I making sense?

See, I feel like I haven't read enough of the Lovecraft Mythos to do the whole UNSPEAKABLE HORROR thing right. Also, I'm looking for something with a pretty simple system that also explains what I need to know to do horror right. As of late, i've moved away from D&D a lot, towards stuff like WH40kRPGs and nWoD- it's a lot easier to focus on the roleplay when there's not a billion kinds of rolls you have to make.

That said, I feel pretty accomplished that both my all-Guardsmen version of Dark Heresy and a session of nWoD as mortals were so tense that someone knocking on the door/stepping out of another room in the house scared the pants off of my players one night.

What kinds of things can you do with the Chaosium system?

I get the feeling we agree.

A GM needs to know what a given force or entity does, and how it will respond. It helps to know what said force or entity is, but it's not necessary.

I guess the reason that Dark Heresy doesn't really go into detail on the Tyrant Star is because it's meant to be a flexible, mysterious threat that any given GM can fit into any given game. If that's its purpose, it doesn't need a canon definition.

Say, for example, you have no idea what fire is. You could still come up with a decent adventure based around the players surviving a forest fire if you know roughly how fire will respond to a given situation.

Certain things are just plot devices and threats, and they're better left flexible.

    I think.

The big thing about BRP (the system Chaosium uses) is that it's incredibly simple. Nearly everything is based off of d% roll under skills. That way it fades into the background and you never really need to look at your sheets or the rulebook beyond checking a skill and rolling some dice. Of course, there's more in-depth rules, but they can be easily ignored if you don't like 'em. And it's really easy to modify and fiddle with. BRP is also an incredibly good generic system on its own, Runequest is based off of it too.

Really, I don't think you need to have read much Lovecraft to run a good Cthulhu game, though it certainly helps, and Lovecraft is worth a read. The Cthulhu Mythos has expanded with lots of other authors writing Mythos-y stuff, and pretty much any horror media you can imagine can be fit into the Cthulhu Mythos, since it's so flexible. You may not have read Lovecraft, but you've probably seen Alien, which is a textbook "purist" Cthulhu game. Or Aliens, which is a textbook pulp Cthulhu game. Or The Thing. Or some of Stephen King's stuff. Or Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Or...

Check out the Trail of Cthulhu rulebook, which is on /rs/, for a decent summary of the various entities (better than CoC's I feel). Read a few published scenarios for Cthulhu. As long as you run a good, creepy investigative game (and it sounds like you're good at that) running Cthulhu won't be a massive step out of what you're familiar with.

So, BRP is exactly like the WH40kRPG system, then? Cause that's fucking -awesome-. I admit it, i'm spoiled on d10 and d% systems now, no lie- but I enjoy getting dice rolls out of the way and just roleplaying.

Also, i'm reading a review of Trail of Cthulhu, and...i'm a bit freaked out, as it mentions CoC having a "Temporary Insanity" meter or something- which is something I houseruled into my nWoD game. The PCs have a Sanity meter, similar to the Morality meter, but they also have temporary "Insanity Points." If the points reach 10, they have lose a level of Sanity and possibly gain a degeneration. Insanity Points go away at 1/day, and if a PC decides to like...focus on removing those, they could with a few rolls and some RP explaination.

From what i'm reading, I think I'd actually like to run a more "purist" style game- no "happy endings" and all that. As for things i've read, well, I read the entire Dark Tower series, so I'd probably pull a lot of inspiration from their description of "todash space," which is the space between dimensions. Scary, incomprehensible beings and all that.

Any other books I should get?

Lieutenant in a street gang. two others with me. We need money and weapons quick, so we decide to burgle.

Party includes a lunatic with a fire extinguisher who calls himself "Sphinx" and a twitchy Mexican named Jesus (HAYSOOS) with a Mac10. I'm an eloquent fucker with a knife.

We pick a low income area outside the metropolitan area (because no security alarms) and sneak in through a window. The house occupants are watching tv, two of them. We rush them down, and I stab one in the eye while Sphinx beats the other one to death and Jesus opens up on him with the Mac10 like a moron. Luckily the guy I stabbed is still alive so we interrogate him to find his valuables. We get maybe a couple jewels, heirlooms and his wallet. We also decide to take his TV. Satisfied, we knock him out and walk outside with the stuff to our car, when suddenly four squad cars pull up and officers pile out and take aim at us. Sphinx charges at them like the madman he is and they open fire, but he doesn't die somehow. Jesus is carrying the TV and panics, the tv takes the bullets and, despite being the only one among us with a gun, runs back inside with the busted TV. I grab fire extinguisher guy off an officer and pull him back inside just as the SWAT van rolls in. To be continued-

I decide to try and use the still living homeowner as a hostage, and just as I turn around, I see him wake up and freak out. Sphinx bellows NO WITNESSES and before I can react, cracks the man's skull open.

Holding on to hope, I yell to the police that we're cutting off body parts of the hostage until they let us go. So I cut off the dead guy's hand, toss it out and have Jesus fake a scream. This seems to work at least, as the lights and sirens fade from view from the windows.

Suspicious, I tell Sphinx to go first out the front door. He is promptly sniped by the SWAT team, who obviously have not left.

Deciding we're pretty much out of options, Me and Jesus (still carrying the TV) start pushing a refrigerator as mobile cover as we try to get to the car.

We get shot in the head from at least five directions, according to the GM.

I was GMing RT a year or two back and we had this armsman who was basically a glorified redshirt become totally badass out of absolutely nowhere during a fight with filthy Eldar witches. She had a naval shotcannon and some enforcer carapace, and ended up killing as many Warlocks as the actual party thanks to some good rolls. The party ended up giving her the name of "Kalta 'Crimson' Redshirt" and she became a recurring NPC. Oddly enough, every time she gets brought along as part of their armsman complement during a excursion, she ends up being the only Armsman to actually return to the ship.

To be fair, the distinction between "pulp" and "purist" games is a very, very thin line. Don't force your players to lose every time, or they'll lose interest in fighting. The thing about Cthulhu is that you can have small victories, but in the end, it doesn't change the fact that humanity's doomed, it just delays the inevitable. Don't get sucked into the ALL DEATH ALL INSANITY ALL DEFEAT preconception. They don't all have to die. They don't all have to go insane. They don't have to lose every battle. Because in the end it doesn't matter. We're all dead.

Trail of Cthulhu has the Stability/Sanity divide. Call of Cthulhu just has Sanity. I've yet to decide which system I prefer.

As for other books? As you like nWoD, then I'd definitely recommend getting Second Sight and reading the chapter on Things That Should Not Be. It's the best material for Cthulhu that isn't actually labelled Cthulhu I've read. Great inspiration. Most of the published material for Call and Trail are scenarios, or books full of inspiration, there's not really any books with lots of extra rules in them. Malleus Monstorum is basically Cthulhu's Monster Manual, it contains pretty much everything you could ever want to put your players up against and then more. Plus it has brilliant artwork. Both Keeper's Companions for CoC are good sources of extra inspiration. Rough Magicks for Trail of Cthulhu expands nicely on magic.

Beyond that, you're pretty much into scenarios. The big campaigns for Call of Cthulhu are brilliant, though probably quite overwhelming. Especially look at Tatters of the King, Masks of Nyarlathotep and Horror on the Orient Express. Mansions of Madness is a good set of scenarios. Hell, Call of Cthulhu's rulebook has a decent set of scenarios (just ignore The Madman, it's pretty rubbish).

If the possibility of running a modern day game of Call of Cthulhu is at all appealing, get Delta Green, and its sequels: Countdown, Eyes Only and Targets of Opportunity. I wasn't sure about modern Cthulhu, until I read DG. It updates the Mythos wonderfully, provides a framework for investigators to operate in and ties together the Mythos and all manner of modern conspiracy theory to make a delicious setting. Even if you dislike the conspiracy aspect of it, most of the antagonists would make excellent material for a "normal" modern day Cthulhu game.

The acolytes are floating around a slummy, zero-gravity section of the Misericord when they happen to be overtaken by a trio of creepy, laughing voidborn children playing tag with each other through the coridoors.

The guy playing the guardsman (in power armour and with a heavy bolter) immediately says "I shoot them." To this day, I still don't know why but I suspect the player to be a little retarded.

Our psyker (and default party leader) uses Compel in a hasty effort to stop him.

The good news? He pulls it off so the guardsman decides not to obliterate three innocent children. The bad news? He rolls a psychic phenomena.

I dunno man, Once More From The Top is pretty cool. Who'd have thought of using White Phosphorous grenades against a Shoggoth? And Russian Dolls is deliciously cruel. And Rules of Engagement has Stephen Alzis being a magnificent bastard, and the somewhat nice ending that Targets of Opportunity just tears apart. And The Corn King has Reggie Fairfield being his own badass self. And Denied to the Enemy has that delicious Yithian plot and dat twist.

    >I know. I built it.
    >my face when

I reckon they're all pretty good.

I thought that Russian Dolls was pretty bad. It was like a shittier version of I Have No Mouth And Must Scream or whatever the title of that short story is. No characterization, horrible dialog, etc.

I haven't read Rules of Engagement, Targets of Opportunity, or Denied to the Enemy. =/

I liked it. It wasn't the best story, but it was the ideal set-up for a one-off CoC session.

Can't help with sharing the two novels with you, but I can give you Targets of Opportunity. Fuck yeah.

Then I can't help but repay the favor.

Curse of the Yellow Sign, Act 1 and Act 2. I just bought Act 3, when I get it I'll post it on /tg/. They're one-off CoC sessions.

    I'll start uploading it now.

Ta muchly. I did have them already, but I await Act 3 with bated breath. Apparently it's not nearly as good as Act 1 though.

I sure hope I didn't waste my money, because Act 2 was pretty shitty IMO. Not enough Cthultu, too much SCREAMING AT YOUR PLAYERS TO MAKE THEM SCARED BOO!

Fucking John "Spend half the scenario hinting at how things went in the playtest and giving advice that only works if you're John Wick, don't give any guidance as to how the scenario might go and then ignore constructive criticism" Wick.

I'd be fine with ignoring it if Act I hadn't showed such promise. And Houses of the Blooded is awesome.

Guys, guys, you HAVE the DG fiction? I'm so jelly. I've tried hunting for a torrent or download of them to no avail, and scoured second-hand book resources online for them (for a reasonable price) and have been met with similar failure.

    >taking alot of san checks, particularly for books which one moron just HAS to read every one we find.
    >call a break when pizza shows up.
    >start talking about how this is probably the most san checks i've ever taken in a single session and we aren't even half through yet.
    >go outside for a smoke.
    >come back in as we're starting again.
    >open my book to get my char sheet out (i'd used it as a bookmark sort of.)
    >20 sticky notes with the words "take a san check" on them inside the book.

DM sends shadow assasins to attack us. We fail horribly and they start to make their getaway by wrapping themselves in their own shadows. Player playing Chaos Mage turns their shadows INTO STEEL. They try to take our shadows and make another getaway but when they try it the Chaos Mage once again turns the shadows to steel but this time when the shadows are encasing the assasins.
