Welp, I picked a bad time to discover Twilight Imperium. But no matter.

You are Commander David Lister, elite mobile suit pilot for the Principality of Zeon. As the Co of the independant Corps the Nachtmaren Unit, you've been kicking all kind of ass since the start of the war.

Last week you managed to successfully thwart Gihren's plan to nuke Von Braun for his own ends. This risky play backfired for him as you were not only able to destroy all evidence that the MS that initiated the attack was made by Legitimacy forces, but you also managed to save all 4 of the Nukes, which will allow us to identify them as clearly having come from his Loyalist factions stockpile.

With his plan already leaked to the Von Braun authorities and media the Nukes are already in the hands of neutral security forces of the luna city, and from their they will be transporting them to Side 6, where a fullscale investigation will be held into the incident.

I've never really been a big fan of the Gyan but that pic makes it look awesome.

Will David and Jolyne have to worry about assasination attempts by any Girhen supporters while visiting Von Braun? After what just happened I imagine the Loyalist hardliners will be trying everything possible to kill off our unit, Char and Ramba Ral.

Anyway, at the conclusion of last week, Char's Falmel class command ship has docked at Von Braun, and you and the rest of the Nachtmaren who were with you have disembarked for a day of R&R. (Jolyne, Bernard and Zolomon were all with you.)

It is currently 3'o Clock in the afternoon. The news channels are buzzing with the story about how the Nachtmaren saved the city from a Nuke. Although they seem to be concentrating on Zolomon since he happens to be a local boy.
You hope that he doesn't let his newfound fame go to his head.

Before you leave the docks, Ramba Ral tells you that aside from the local security forces, his team will be practically sitting on the Nukes to make sure that Gihren doesn't try anything before the warheads are verified by their half-lives.

So, as I recall, we have a date.

Well, we seem to have reached an impasse.

You place a call to Pezun to see how they've been doing. Everything seems to be puttering along just fine over there, Strauss is telling them old stories from Mastodon Battalion and work on the Outer Heaven is continuing at a good pace.

With nothing better to do, you get yourself something smart but casual to wear. With that done you travel back to the Falmel and do some more work on various bits of paperwork and your steadily mounting to do list regarding tactical doctrines.

At about 6 you decide to tell Jolyne that you're making a move.

She meets you wearing a dress that appears unusually bright for her and comprised AT LEAST 60% of straps, overwhich she wears a green overcoat and hat.

Well, at least you don't have to worry about dressing yourself up too much.

"Where the hell did you get that dress from?"

"I always take my civvies with me on mission."

    "THOSE are you're civvies?"

"Well, the skirts new, but...shut up!"

Deciding not to push it, you make your way to the nearest travel pod to take you to your restaurent.

The pod drops you off at the start of the district. The city is cycling into it's night-phase, and the main daylights are beginning to dim and street lights are flickering on one by one.

The flickering neon of several bars and hotels becomes more evident as the lights dim, casting a cosy if slightly garish pink light on the street. Jolyne leans in against you as you walk. You aren't really sure what to make of that.

The streets are relatively quiet because it's still early in the night, and you walk comfortably to The Ptolymaeos.

You open the door to the restaurant and suave as you like grab Jolyne's hand as you lead her inside before you.

"So, it occurs to me that we've known each other since what? April? But we never actually talk about ourselves."

"I know right? I mean, it turns out Zolomon solved a murder mystery when he was a kid, I mean, who knew?"

A fair bit of the making sure the Jaburo attack works is going to be manufacturing the special weapons involved. As a funny thought, could a flamethrower be reformatted to spew Beam Chaff? Trolling them is my new pastime. Part of the reason I want to attack Jaburo is that its where they refine their Lunar Titanium right? Hey, look at that, better shields for everyone! Better yet, (from a meta viewpoint) is that if we get a permanent agent into Jaburo, we might get warning about the Gundam Alex before it gets finished, along with any other fancy secret projects. I seriously want Incognito hacking their databases EVERYWHERE to get as much as we can. They are starting to bypass us in a few areas, if we can find out how, we will even out the playing field again.

"... so after Zeon sent two squads of what must have been some very early Zaku I's to deal with the blockading fleet and then Colonial Tank Company that pretty much turning things on their heads. It didn't take long for the Freedom Cells to start recruiting openly. At which point the feds must have realised that they had hours to get the hell out of dodge or things were basically going to end in murder. So they hijacked the day-night routines, set it to night, shut down power to the street-lights and ran to the space docks where they stole the largest cargo-ship they could find and snuck out. Not the Federations finest hour."

"Ha! I can imagine. Okay, fine. After the Zum Falls disaster I was shipped off to live my uncle Jotaro, who was a Exo-Xenobiologist. Not the best of parents all told, he was basically never home, and was always in between this or that expedition to mars or Jupiters moons or whatever. Basically, I went off the rails. Agreed to both of these. Wait, wouldnt most of them be both referential and foreshadowing?

Btw, if we're starting to run low on carriers space side (what with them being needed for use in atmosphere) converting the Papua class transports might work well. That forward vent area looks just the right size for MS catapults.

That's what I wanted to discuss. Carriers.

Zeon lacks any real dedicated fleet carriers, since the Musai is too light and occupies some sort of hybrid destroyer/escort carrier role, and the Zanzibar's capacity is too low, it lacks catapults, and it is generally too specialized. And of course, the Dolos is just made of fail. So I suggest redesigning the Tivvay-class.

Tivvays are unusally large ships, roughly three times as massive as the final production model Musais, and yet they're astonishingly lightly armed for their size, with only two mega particle cannon turrets. All that space would make for great hangers, and you could easily fit a good-sized catapult in the bow there like the refitted models from 0087 onwards. Given how big they are you could easily fit between two and three full MS teams, or maybe even a couple mobile armors in that bulk.

Ideally, a carrier battle group would consist of a Tivvay-C, at least three Musais (preferably the late production models), and a Zanzibar as the mission requires. Larger groups could double that and add a Gwazine for CiC purposes.

The Chivvay class already carrys 8 MS and for the Tivvay/Chivvay Final Production Type it doesnt say how many more it can carry over the original. You're right though that it'd be a lot better with MS catapults. Still it's getting awful late in the war to start producing new ship lines.

The Chivvay is a outmoded piece of junk that uses cargo bays for hangers though. It's easy enough to remodel in to the Tivvay though, seeing as it's the late production model. And 8 MS is a big improvement over the Musai's 4.

    --OMAKE--

Zolomon Ringo had been relieved by Bernard Wiseman 2 hours ago. Since that time, he has returned to his families bar and has in the proceeding hours managed to amass quite a large crowd.

"So, we see the flare, and we know that the thing has managed to get out of the hangar and is heading our way, but we can just about make out that he's picked up a passenger who's flailing about like some fisherman who's picked the wrong fish to mess with right?"

There's some drunken laughter from the mental image. Zolomon himself is cradling his fifth shot of bourbon.

"So, I'm thinking Ramba Ral's got my back, right? I've got a little leeway for some last minute heroics right? Of course, initially I was going to wait until it got closer. But then I see the Boss take out this guy's drop tanks, and that's the part where he stops going through fuel like a fat kid through cake and I'm thinking: Hey, I can probably hit this guy now.
So I tell Ramba Rall to save the day if this don't work and I charge in. But it's only as I'm charging in right that I remember that HOLY SHEET thos Nukes are live."

    More laughter.

Hmm. Yeah, the increased capacity is nice, but the light weapons are a major downturn. We managed to survive as long as we did because the Outer Heaven is a fucking monster, and had guns everywhere. That Tivvay, looks nice but the only way it can hit with all of its big guns is a broadside? Not so good. Now, if we redesigned it as part of our combined forces doctrine, then yeah it could be useful. Then again, it has enough room for pretty much everyone and their suits, even if we do end up recruiting Nell(which I personally want to).

Also, we should start expanding Natchmaren. It would be nice if we had more than the two squads of aces( the rest of the dudes can be unnamed red-shirts, but suitably awesome red-shirts, as any natchmaren would be). Either that, or start gettting into a higher command position. We really should start trying to come up with a long term battle plan to at the very least deadlock the Federation.

"Just like that?" one guy in the crowd asks.

"Sure, why not? I mean, it's like 6 meter's long, the part I'm aiming for is about 2 or 3, I mean sure you don't have long to aim, but what the hell, you only need one shot right? So I line up, and I can see Bossman riding on the back, spraying it with headvulcans but whatever, because I don't have any time for that, so I line up my lance and I... joust. I can feel it's a good hit, I don't see it, but I know that yeah, I got him. I'll try and do a little work on it later but I'm kinda procrastinating on finishing stuff for my job.

Plan to deal with the Jaburo Orbital Garrison!
The advance force for the attack will consist of a small recon in force unit. They're to stay well outside of the range of the defenders and act as a resuply unit for the scouts. The key vehicle of the advance force will the the Elmeth. With the long range possible with it's bit weapons it can strike with impunity, disabling warships and Mobile Suits before they can even be launched. If they can take out a command ship or two before the main attack arrives it will seriously hamper their ability to react.

The next stage of the attack will occur once the Elmeths bits are finished being replaced or recherged. Fast Mobile Armors like the Val Varo and Mobile Suits using beam sleds will conduct a high speed hit and run attack with an emphasis on the usage of beam weaponry. They're to deal damage and then get the hell out in time for the main attack forces arrival.

While the hit and run is taking place Recon Zakus and Sodon Space tugs will deploy to act as a laser com network to give the main fleet instant updates on fed ship positioning and fleet composition.

As the hit and run force is behinning to pull back the fleet launches their main strike depending on how the Feds will have reacted. If they prove true to form the Federation ship commanders will have deployed beam chaff to ward off the attacks. If they have we Launch kinetic kill vehicles. These will be very crude, built out of nothing but colony fragments cut into 3x3x15m blocks using beam sabers. We can either attach rocket engines to them or use Mobile suits to accelerate them towards the Federation capital ships. Given the toughness of Fed carriers I would reccomend not targeting them with KKV's since their Luna Titanium armor will shrug off the worst of the hits.

    Continued

In the unlikely event that the feds dont deploy beam chaff our fleet can use the laser com and Recon Zaku net to snipe from out of enemy range. The Beam sleds could be refueld and sent in for another attack run to exploit the damage being done to the enemy fleet. Eventually they're going to want to deploy beam chaff, we just have to make sure of that.

The Elmeth (and the Braw Bro if available) should assist in protecting the recon net until both fleets get into Knife fighting range. Once that happens they should continue to hang back and go after vital systems of the remaining Carriers.

I'll answer that in two parts.
Tech wise you're quite right that relying too heavily upon a piece of experimental technology could have some serious problems. It's one of the main reasons that I wanted the Elmeth and it's accompanying escort force to hang back so far. If something goes wrong they're far enough away that they have time to conduct repairs or retreat. Its presence is not essential to force the feds to deploy beam chaff, but would allow us to get in an uncontested first strike without any risk to our pilots. The Elmeth itself has powerful engines and could probably outrun anything produced in the war. If the garrison figures out what's going on and sends ships out to investigate our people should be able to evac in time from +200km.

On to the pilot. We've been discussing ways of lessening the mental trauma that Lalah will go through. Someone mentioned using the bits to disable ships and MS rather than destroy them, so that she wouldnt be directly causing as many casulties. Once the battle is joined though it'll be up to her (or her handlers) to decide weather she can continue to assist. If not we have have her pull back to a safe zone. If she can continue it'll be more of the same; shoot to disable for the most part.
    >> Strategist 12/03/10(Fri)20:49 No.13019712
so anyone have long term goals? One of mine was to increase Natchmaren's command rank, eventually ending up as a fleet commander hopefully. That, and recruit Cima as superloyal 2nd in command (Zolomon really doesn't get command like he gets how to close in and mess up your day)

    >>13019655
Yeah its a super weapon, but we are trying to integrate Zeon's more estoric super weapons into a combined fleet doctrine, imagine every zeon fleet with a Elmeth for rapid response beams. would definitely rack up some kills that way. Lets face it, the Elmeth is at this point a near perfect long range support ship.

    >using the bits to disable ships and MS rather than destroy them
I remember this as well. I'm sure that it could help in the opening salvo, and since the Elmeth is only a part of a force, she could retire from the battle if it gets to be too much.

I bring up the pilot issue simply because of the notorious instability of the young Newtypes versus those who had a more robust upbringing and whose latent abilities emerged later in life.

The Elmeth has tremendous range, far moreso then any battleship in production. It could easily sit back behind any formal battle line we have established. And Lalah doesn't have the most fragile psyche, seeing as her first formal deployment had her destroying docked ships from Solomon's shoal zone. Virtually all she did was guerrilla snipe attacks.

The problem is the lack of other worthwhile targets that could bring the Feddies to the table. Because we desperately need to do that now.

...although we could always feint at Jaburo and then hit Dublin instead. At this point that's probably where most of the Earth-based C&C is for the Feddies, and some of their production.

And if we visit Belfast, we can give our old buddy the White Base another working-over.

In space, if we can feint at the Jaburo orbital garrison and then hit Luna II instead, we might want to do that. I don't know how Luna II's defenses compare, though.

    >The problem is the lack of other worthwhile targets that could bring the Feddies to the table.
Might I propose the federation nuclear arsenal at Luna 2?

Right now the Antarctica Treaty is enforced by the fact that they can counter any more asteroid or colony drops with the threat of a nuclear reprisal from Luna 2 that could wipe out every colony in Side 3. It's a basic mutually assured destruction scenario.

If we remove the federation nuclear option, they we are free (or at least freer) to rain all kinds of massively destructive awkwardness down onto Earth. Even the implicit thereat of this should be enough for the federation to want to come to terms. And then there's the advantage that the Luna 2 garrison is a lot less battle tested than the one we've tangoed with multiple times at Jaburo or the boys guarding Dublin many of whom might have taken part in the op to take Odessa.

Luna 2 has all of the Federation's nukes in space because it is the only place for them to keep them, unless they're hiding a few in some supposedly neutral colony. Luna 2 is the only place of off Earth that isn't controlled by either Zeon or a neutral government. Any other bombs they have are somewhere on Earth. Deploying them all the way to the dark side of the moon would be difficult, especially in the numbers needed to wreck total annihilation. The same rules apply to their gas and germ warfare arsenals; both are hard to deploy to side 3 from Earth and the rest will be stored at Luna 2.

    >No, the main purpose of taking Luna 2 is to deny the Federation a safe port for their space fleet.
That's a good goal too. And one that seems reasonably doable if we can catch them with a good mobile suit infiltration while they are still in port. Any op that can get in and trash the nuclear stockpile is sure to slag a good number of their ships (we will likely get at least one Pegasus kill, not to mention the hell our space superiority suits are going to cause for the general fleet), and every ship we sink makes the Antarctica Treaty less of a MAD scenario and more of a gentleman's agreement. Which will bring them to the bargaining table all the faster because they don't want to have to base their planetary defense on the Zabis being chivalrous and noble, especially if Gihren is still in any thing resembling power.

For whoever thinks we should hit Luna-2: We have no idea what the defenses are. There was never a battle there, so we have no idea what they can throw at us. Its up to apologised to give us some info on its defenses before we charge in and attack. For all we know, they could be set up to hurt us more than Jaburo could. We guessed last thread that they have about 15-20 Pegasus carriers there, and probably about 120 magellan/salamis in addition to whatever shitloads of GM and Balls they keep at their only space rally point. For all intents and purposes, this is their pearl harbor. Hitting it and destroying it would give us an advantage, yeah, but it also might end up with us in a meat grinder and no chances of escape.

Granted, Natchmaren would probably be able to get away, but we might lose the war by default without any ships left to use in battle. Also, any attack on luna-2 requires us to get spaceships, not just MS and MA.

Right now, if we take spaceships away from the legitimacy, ghiren will be all over them and he WILL break the Antarctic Treaty on a whim.

If we take down Jaburo, we might have some awesome technology to play with(assuming that Incognito gets called in and brings all his spies/ spec ops with him) as well as keeping down their future numbers. If we hit luna-2, that doesn't happen, we just reduce their current forces, not future. In the long run, completely eradicating Jaburo might be more advantageous to us than crashing Luna-2, though both have their reasons.

Cake. We wrecked those guys in the one week war with early model Zakus. The suits we have now are vasty more capable. We could probably take out half of those ourselves if we really needed to.

    >shitloads of GM and Balls
Problematic. The fleet is staying under cover in Luna 2 until they have enough of these to come out safely. We've messed up their production a good deal from where it's supposed to be, so how many they have is anyones guess.

    >If we take down Jaburo, we might have some awesome technology to play with
Possible, but that's hardly going to win the war at this point. Stealing advanced feddie tech is something we did to get ahead in the early stages of the war and it got us suits acros the board radically more advanced than in canon. But anything we grab now is only going to pimp out our squad, and that's not a very high priority at this point. Our rides are already fairly pimped.

    >as well as keeping down their future numbers
...at a high cost to our own, and we'll have much bigger problems replacing our losses than they will. Even winning all out at Jaburo is at best a delaying tatic, and that's the last thing that Zeon needs if it wants to win this war.

    >Right now, if we take spaceships away from the legitimacy, ghiren will be all over them and he WILL break the Antarctic Treaty on a whim.
Which makes ghiren our number one problem at this point. What we need is a good plan to get him out of the way so we can launch a final campaign that's actually got a chance of winning the war.

We can't win the war against the Federation. It is no longer within the realm of possibility thanks to Girhen's dickery. Our only chance is to get into a good position to lose as little territory as possible when we sue for peace.

OK: We say that the JG was all Ghiren's idea, every part of it, along with nuking Odessa and even Operation British. Then we make an offer to the feds: You take the Earth, we take space. Zeon will have control over all colonies as well as Jupiter, to ensure an economic balance of power. Meanwhile all of Earth is Federation territory. That being said, we tag-team Ghiren, Revil and Amuro taking him on the ground while Nachtmaren and Char settle the score in Space.

Winning the war at this stage is impossible.
Our victory condition is to force the Federation to come to the negotiating table, with Zeon holding some good positions so that we can work out a favorable cease-fire. Even a neutral one would be preferable.

    Jupiter is neutral, though.
I think that Zeon keeping it's original colonies and most space assets, as well as autonomy and recognized sovereignty would be a win for us. Also any Earth regions that wish to stay under Zeon rather than Federation governance.
    >> Anonymous 12/04/10(Sat)01:03 No.13022058
Throw all resources into the development of a a gigantic mobile armor that, once mass produced, will crush the federation in no time!

    This is a good idea.

I dont think that'll go for that one personally. I'd settle for them allowing unrestricted passage to space for any Zeon sympathizers among the populace.

Also we promise to help them remove any Zeon holdouts on Earth in return for letting us take posession of the gear and personell they might have. Make sure to gloss over out the part where we dont actually have to tell them where the remnant bases were located as long as we remove them. >:3

Exactly. Even if we take out their nukes at Luna 2 and most of their fleet, they'll still have the long term production to zerg us into the ground faster than we can train new pilots and build suits to field them in. But they don't want to have to go through that anymore than we want to have to start dropping heavy things on them in response to that, so we compromise. If we can achieve a reasonably good dominance over military operation in space, then we have a very good card to play at the peace talks.

I still don't get why people keep making the assumption that the Federation is keeping all of their WMDs in Luna 2. There's never really been any clear evidence to prove this, and even if it were true, there's no way they'd be keeping all their eggs in one basket after we nearly trashed their MS production in Jaburo. Just like how they've relocated their HQ and are dispersing their manufacturing facilities, they're probably splitting up their weapons stockpiles so they don't lose everything in one lucky raid.

We need to verify the Luna 2 defenses by sending in the Elmeth with cameras and other spy equipemnt mounted into the bits.

    >"The continual use of weapons of mass-destruction were also dangerous to Zeon, as the Federation Forces could retaliate back with NBC strikes. The EFSF had enough nuclear warheads stored in Luna II to completely annihilate Side 3 (a few thousand according to Gundam Officials)."

That says that they have a few thousand there. Nowhere does it say that that is where they are keeping every single last nuke they have. And to keep all their nukes in one place would be the single stupidest thing the Federation has ever done.

There is flat out no way that they have all their nukes at luna-2, you can bet any politician worth their dirt would throw a massive hissy fit about the possibilities of someone destroying all the nukes at once. Besides which, THEY ARE AT WAR. NUKES WERE USED.

Revil might think that somebody on Zeon is honorable(from the odessa omake) but i seriously doubt that he would leave his capability to deter another colony drop in a single place. Revil is smart dammit. The fact that a nuke was launched already, even if it was shot down means that he would expect it to happen again. If he thinks someone on Zeon is crazy enough to go for MAD, then he will take care to make sure that the Federation still has reprisal capabilities. Hell, i bet you that there is a Pegasus class with a couple of nukes hidden flying around somewhere.

    >>13027971
yeah i had a endgame scenario that was basically, say everything was gihrens fault, then team up with Amuro and char to casually rape him with LOLPLOTARMORHAX. The sheer amount of plot armor from that combined would be enough to ignore the colony laser as "nothing more than a fancy flashlight".
