So after reading some of the Horus Heresy books has anyone else had their opinion of the Emperor change for the worse?

well, while Im sure he was a nice guy to his subjects, his plan to become a chaos god by fucking over everyone was a dick move.

shame about the price he paid.

    >> Anonymous 12/01/10(Wed)17:10 No.12994029
Well I think the idea was to confuse people as to his goals, but one of the ones I heard was absolute bullshit.

Apparently he realised that all races which tried to fight against chaos inevitably failed in the end, so the best solution would be to give them half of his super-soldiers and massively strengthen them so that there would be an eternal war which never ended, so Chaos could never win and overtake the galaxy.

This is instantly retarded writing as, had he not given over said spehss mahreens, there wouldn't have been much of a problem with chaos and humanity could indeed have stood firm against chaos. Not to mention having various allies if the Imperium he made wasn't entirely composed of colossal dicks.

It's a shame because most of the heresy books were really good, but Nemesis was a total fail because, despite some of the really cool scenes, the story itself didn't seem particularly great. The bit with the Horus-lance-sniping stuff was cool though.

I'd say so, yes. Previously I didn't have much of an opinion either way, but from what I've read so far, nothing has made me sympathetic to him or to the loyalists in the slightest. The Emperor comes across as little better than a selfish warlord with lolhax psychic powers.

Some hate his guts, Some love him, he did what he thought was best for everyone because no-one else could/would and if he pissed off some people well.. shit happens!

look at his actions letting the chaos gods spread the primarchs around - he let them for his own reasons - from one perspective it was a chump move (pissed of horus no end!) but on the other it meant his children all had different upbringings which was neccessary...

so - he will always be an arsehole to many, loved by many - but he did his own thing because he had too :D

Horus Rising - Dan Abnett - April 2006
False Gods - Graham McNeill - June 2006
Galaxy in Flames - Ben Counter - Oct 2006

These three first. Flight of the Eisenstein was pretty good, and a direct sequel to the first three. After that it doesn't really matter which irder you read them in. Fulgrim was excellent, highly recommend it. I didn't like Descent of Angels. I liked Legion, but I understand why some people didn't, but it wasn't as weak as DoA.
I read Battle for the Abyss, but I barely remember it. First Heretic was awesome.
I'm currently in the middle of A Thousand Sons, which has been pretty interesting so far.

I really enjoyed how Erebus and Kor Phaeron basically co-opted and corrupted the Word Bearers. Lorgar was the weakest link, and they exploited that weakness ruthlessly.

Ancient shaman thing is from the Old Trader realms of chaos books. People still consider it canon, but often conveniently forget that the Sensei and Illuminati are from same books and were never retconned either.

So the Emperor's real immortal sons are still running around.

Having that much forethought is simply amazing. It shows he does indeed have a grand plan, bigger than any of us can fathom, and it does at times break his heart to make certain decisions.

Now, the Sisters have "faith powers" that do not require psychic tests and cannot be prevented by psychic defence. This is because supposedly it's the Emperor's power.

Even Ahriman's and Tigurius' powers can be prevented by hoods. However, Njal Stormcaller's storm powers are every bit as unblockable as those of the Sisters, and far more destructive. It seems that the Wolves of Fenris have stumbled upon a power even mightier than the Emperor, for there is no other explanation for this.

When I started reading 40k books that BL published, I mainly read the IG [Gunheads, Rebel Winter, Fifteen Hours]. The men serving in the IG are awesome. Their faith in the Emperor is not. I find immensely ironic that Night Lords were censured and declared renegade [before the HH erupted throughout the Imperium] for tactics that they used for bringing peace and order, when the whole post-heresy period is filled with those same tactics being perpetrated by the ones who cast them out. One of my more favorite quotes from Lord of the Night:

    >'You ask what I hate? I hate a creature that speaks of pride and honour, that fosters the love of his sons, that smiles and scrapes at every obedient act, and then turns like a diseased dog and stabs his own child in the spine!'
    >'Shut up! Shut up, damn you!'
    >I hate a being so sick, so certain of his own brilliance, so twisted by the call of glory, that he repays the greatest sacrifice of all with betrayal,’'

    &

    >We were never slaves to the Dark Powers. We fought beneath a banner of hate, not of corruption.'
    >'Hate? What did you have to hate? You fell from grace by choice, traitor, you were not pushed!'
    >For the first time real, honest emotion ignited behind his eyes. This was not a part of some elaborate game of words, she understood suddenly. This sentiment boiled from his guts and infected the air before him like a cloud of locusts; as heavy with conviction as it was with contempt.
    >'Hate for the accursed Emperor. Hate for your withered god.'

The Emperor was one of the greatest manipulator and liars that ever lived. He was, as one anon already said, born around 8000 BC. All the wars, all the suffering, all the death that happened, happened only because he allowed it. If he had acted sooner, Chaos would not be this strong as it was in the 41M. He would not be a withering husk, shriveling away into nothingness, his broken remains covered with dust and the stench of betrayal.
    >> Anonymous 12/01/10(Wed)20:06 No.12995608
    One of the worst parents ever to live. He was so perfect, so singular in his vision, that he could not confide in any of his sons about the glorious future that he dreamed of. He though they might be tempted. Yet, I see no explanation for the myriad of workers in his underground laboratory vaults and all the Custodes who were privy to this knowledge. And the Sigilite. He also confided to him. But not to his sons. Not to Magnus, whom he wanted to place upon the Golden Throne; not to Curze, who threw away his humanity for the sake of his father's empire; not to Angron, whom he tore away from his first battle-brothers, while they died on the planet's surface and expected him to obey his commands, disregarding that all Angron knew in his life was the yoke of forced servitude; not to Lorgar, who would've put all his faith in him, had he just been kinder in his dismissal;

I thought that he was even more awesome than before. Alien cabals of ancient demibeings thought he was FUCKING AWESOME. And his ultimate plan would have killed Chaos itself, if not for Lorgar fucking everything up.

Actually, the only ones who've dropped in my esteem are Lorgar (Who's an idiot, though his book his good) Fulgrim, and Ferrus Manus. Unbelievably, Corax has become more awesome, as has Horus.

But the king of all this is the Alpha Legion. God bless Abnett.

Humankind deserve to eliminate xenos because that's life. It must expand - ever onward - eliminating all obstacles in its path. If we do not stamp out the xenos- we will not receive the same peace from them. The Emperor allowed us to rise from petty in-fighting and squabbling to become masters of the galaxy. With Him there is nothing! Victory needs no Explanation, Defeat allows none. Power resides in the will of the righteous!

The Emperor is a being gifted with nigh-unlimited powers, and the intrinsic goal of eliminating the powers of Chaos from the warp. He has the power to equal any of the Chaos gods in the warp individually, but when the four ally, even in the material world he has difficulty with them. In their home turf, he could not hope to win with the level of power they've shared since their inception. The caveats are these: First, the Emperor is still human despite his godlike powers and second, The chaos gods draw their power from every species in the galaxy (at least!) and not just humans. Taking action to rid their influence on Earth before mankind has spread across the galaxy would be an exercise in futility.

So he waits, and sets thousands of events in motion to further his plan. He starts the road that will lead to the Mechanicus in the middle ages, knowing that ironically, religion is the only remotely reliable means to retain information over so many millennia. He unifies the tribes of Earth and attempts to outwit the Gods of the Warp to create the primarchs. But over the 38,000 years he lives, he grows farther and farther apart from humanity. Even ignoring his godlike presence, his immortality means that he will never have the ability to relate to the race he must lead. Even among the primarchs, only the most powerful psykers (Malcador and Magnus) can ease his burden even slightly. This inability to relate and understand the minds of lesser beings - even the primarchs - is the simple flaw that ruins his plans. For all his work and intentions, he is simply too far elevated to understand what is going on beneath him.

    >> 12998275

The Emperor's plans were always more grand than eliminating Xenos races, and establishing the Imperium throughout every sector. From the beginning the Emperor has plotted to destroy the Gods of the Warp, and protect the very souls of the human race. Throughout his life literally quadrillions of Human souls have been consumed by the gods, and he knows it need not be so. By his very existence, the Emperor knows that every human soul could reincarnate through the warp, and thus ascend to immortality. Perhaps in his most Human moments, just the promise alone of finally being able to live amongst his race as an equal drives him on.

But to accomplish this task, the Gods of the Warp must be weakened. They draw strength from craven rituals and sacrifice. Even the simple knowledge of their existence slowly leads to corruption, and this has been a constant of the Warp to present day. So the Imperial Truth is created - not a lie, but a necessary blinding of humanity to the true powers of the Warp. A series of ideals directly contrary to those of the Chaos Gods, intended to weaken them slowly. Mankind is perfect, and need not search for new improvements. Mankind must be unified, and this will not fight amongst itself. There are no gods, so death is not something to be feared. A place in the glory of the Imperium is all one needs to be happy.

When every last heretic civilization is eliminated, the truth might finally be revealed and the Emperor can begin the next phase of his plan: to truly confront the Gods of the Warp, weakened as they would be from their starvation of followers. To shatter their very essence and disperse it again amongst the Warp, calming its turbulent energies.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/10(Thu)00:07 No.12998299
    >>12998286

The destruction of Xenos is a necessary evil in this. almost every Xenos race that is not an immediate violent threat to humanity is aware of the Chaos Powers, and is thus a threat for multiple reasons. First, they are not Human, and thus not beholden to the Emperor's control. The potential for any manipulation of his plans cannot be allowed. Second, even as they may try to resist the Powers, their knowledge will inevitably corrupt them in time. Finally, the acceptance of different forms of life means humanity is not perfect, and drives men to search for ways to improve. This brings them too close to the Warp Powers.

The Emperor's impending mastery of the Old One's Webway technology is one of the final steps necessary to begin the next phase of his plan. Mankind must have a means of traversing distances faster then light, without being molested by the energies of the Warp. Gellar fields are too weak and unreliable for the perfect isolation of humanity from the Warp. This need for safe warp travel is so important, it eclipses the need for his presence as the crusade slowly comes to an end. Of course, his inability to understand what this represents to his warriors and children is what leads to his downfall. His absolute need to isolate humanity from the true terrors of the galaxy is his undoing, and the truth - even in small doses - might have prevented the Heresey.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/10(Thu)00:08 No.12998308
    >>12998299

His seemingly hypocritical actions during the Crusade can be traced back to this goal. He does not initially chide Lorgar's worship of him, because it seems counter to the worship of the Chaos Gods. Indeed, Lorgar's creed on Colchis rose directly from the destruction of the Chaos-worshiping "Old Ways." As the crusade winds on however, the Emperor decides that Lorgar's zeal might blind him to the truth when the time comes to reveal it and that The Word Bearer's practices are too similar to the heathens they purge. His decision at Nikea comes from the realization that psykers are simply too unpredictable for him to control without revealing the truth of the Warp. While at first he may have believed that Legion-trained psykers would be disciplined and not thirsty for knowledge, he realizes that their proximity to the Chaos Powers means they are closer to the corrupting influence he fears.

No, the Emperor is not unjust, nor is he cruel. The goals he strives for and the sacrifices he makes place him beyond the petty judgments of mortals. Instead, the Emperor is a tragic figure to those that know his story. Like the Grecian plays he must have weaned himself on, he is a noble hero with a single tragic flaw - his heroism to the race of man separates him from it, and he is unable to see how his actions influence others.

You dumbasses realize Chaos fed the primarches/ Horus a bunch of out of context information/visions so as to make the Emperor look like a power hungry douche, when i reality he was just trying to defeat Chaos by ridding of all things that cause it (religion, turmoil, etc.). The Forces of Chaos simply fed them what they wanted to hear knowing full well of their flaws and manipulating towards their goals. Anything not in accordance with what the Emperor knew had to be done to eliminate Chaos had to be done lest they be fucked by delicious Chaos cock. All who see him as an unfair, malicious dictator are short sighted as fuck.

A Thousand Sons was fucking silly. Not so much for the Emprah-Douchebag thing, but the Battle of Prospero. Let's recap: Magnus foresees exactly when, where and how many ships Russ will bring to his doorstep. He orders his fleet across the system so they'll have no naval defenses. Russ' ships arrive and attack, wiping out the orbital platforms and bombarding the surface. This is useless, owing to a kine shield the likes of which Terra's void generators only wish they could compete with.

Now Russ launches his land attack. His tiny, irrelevant contingent of Silent Sisters is annihilated because, in typically moronic fashion, he somehow figured an orbital bombardment would be able to wipe out one of the best fortifications IN THE ENTIRE IMPERIUM. Even without the psykers, that's just fucking clinically retarded. But, then again, Russ.

So. The Thousand Sons have to this point been forced to go without naval support, without divination (Magnus blocked them all). If Magnus wasn't so desperate to die a meaningless death, Russ' uneducated space dropouts would have been atoms already. But let's move on.

    Cont.

The problem is that it's the very actions of living that feed chaos. Yeah worshiping them gives them more power, but any violence, acceptance, hope, or indulgence feeds them ever so slightly.

And it turned out that the Imperial Truth, didn't even weaken them as much as raw dogmatic faith in the Emprah. Living itself will feed them no matter what, but being a bunch of aesthetic catholic space nazis feeds the Emperor while denying them anything more that is absolutely necessary.

Now comes the Marine-to-Marine shootout, which by all rights should not even be happening. But hey, the Sons thoroughly dominate here too. Owing to precognition and glorious fucking fireball-spamming Titans, they rip through the Wolves and thoroughly ruin their shit.

Then, just because, Tzeentch makes about half of them explode.

    Great.

This is an accurate summary of how the Thousand Sons were made into invincible super-Marines that were so perfect at everything that the author had to pull every save in the book to make it even remotely possible that they lost a battle against ANYONE, let alone the fucking Viking imbeciles led by a Primarch who could be outsmarted by your garden-variety grade-schooler.

And this is why A Thousand Sons is retarded.

    Yeah.

Ultimately, you can't fault the guy for this goals. He wasn't just some power hungry jerk, I think. However, you can fault him for not knowing near as much as he thought he did. He seemed to lack any knowledge of how the world -actually works-. Which is weird for a guy that old even if he IS highly ascended. He's seen humanity's actions for how long? You'd think he'd have picked up something.

Believed too much in his own ability and not enough in others. Tried to keep people in the dark "for their own good" and tried to do all the heavy lifting himself because he's the EMPRAH and clearly no one else is ever going to be capable of aiding someone so mighty.
