    >DM game for group, warn them that this is a Modern game with consequences
    >Following a series of events leading up to blowing up a large tanker ship in the middle of a harbor, my players are stuck in jail pending trial, with bail set at 1,000,000$ and various political figures decrying their actions as domestic terrorists.
    >Players get mad at me, despite the fact that I kept warning them that a subtle approach would be better, or that stealing a police car to chase after a purse snatcher may be a bad idea, or that crashing a helicopter into a tanker ship in the middle of a busy harbor might attract undue attention
    >mfw near the end of the session, they not only decide to plead not guilty to the charges leveled against them (despite the presence of lots of civilian witnesses), but they decided unanimously to decline state counsel and represent themselves.

Logical conclusions make for interesting games, but FUCK, I wish my players were a bit more subtle. Now I've got to organize a mock trial with witnesses, evidence, and other miscellania (assuming they can beat the state's case, I'll probably give them a reduced sentence/change the charges brought against them), and most likely plan a prison arc.

I can't tell if they're trying to punish me for running a more realistic game or trying to actually play. Either way, logical conclusions provide a lot of logistical headaches for DMs.

I'd resolve the trial with a quick "You make a holy show of yourselves with your defense and get maximum penalties" rather than actually spend 6 months with an OJ trial, they ARE guilty as sin.

Actually they're insane by any real world standards being in essence controlled by extradimensional entities that have no real fear of consequences and regard the world as a playground, so possibly a high security loony bin would do too

Or the players said, "Just make something and we'll play it." Some people have players that WILL NEVER give any campaign creation input or say what it is that they want to play. At all. Or say things so damned vague ("Something in fantasy." "Building something." or "Sandbox us.") that you still can't make a campaign based on what they want.

Declare someone a "shit" DM only after you know what kind of players he or she has to deal with.

The campaign started simply enough. The group were in a large plaza doing various random things (buying newspaper, sitting at an open air cafe, headed to work, etc.) Then a purse snatcher stole a woman's bag near the guy reading a newspaper.

Things started going downhill when the guy reading his newspaper stood up, pulled out his hand-cannon, let loose a shot in the air, and yelled at the top of his lungs "STOP, CRIMINAL SCUM"

I think I may have come off as hating my players, but it isn't a real hate. It's more of a loving hate, since they've turned my Modern Consequences game into a Modern Supers/Ordinaries game.

    ALTERNATIVE.

Go XXX style. Players are sentenced to death for mass murder/terrorism. When being taken to the table they are switched for other convicts. Before they figure out what's going on they're being shipped like cattle to a military base. Once there they're given two options: Work for the government as ghost operatives or eat metal.

They can choose to end the game there, or they can choose to do what they want to do and you can still keep it somewhat logical. Hell, they can even choose to go Bourne Identity and suddenly you have government-supplied rogue agents on your hands. Sounds like this could be pretty awesome.

The prosecution makes a small but important mistake involving a piece of crucial evidence. Give the PCs a chance to spot it, which would rule it a mistrial.

They'll be forever branded as potential threats, may still risk Super Duper Gitmo treatment but they'll walk out.

Cue the arrival of the legal clerk in the employ of a strange, enigmatic man in the shadows, looking for a group of malcontents and misfits with a particular range of skills.

He's offering face lifts, prints being shuffled (ie: their fingerprints are replaced with the band members of Metallica, they get Metallica's) and a little bit of free training in the fine arts of wrecking shit.

They want fun? have them roll skill checks against the undoubtedly impossible odds, and then get sent to prison. Then they have a new adventure: Avoid prison rape/shankings, and break out. If they fail, they will invariably get shut up so tight they can't try to escape, and have to wait several more years. You could turn this into a real opportunity. Either they break out all Shawshank style or something, or they rot for ten years or some such, and then get released, older, wiser, and more cynical.

or you need to give them the stories they want to tell.

Do a montage scene which involves life imprisonment, a couple of weeks in the slammer and some connected set of good guys/bad guys/grey conspiracy free them/ bust them out.

They now get to play the over the top type of story they want to tell and you have managed to save face by not completely backing down.

If you want to still be a railroading dick, you could put cortical explosives in their head and force them to do what your evil mastermind wants but most groups hate that type of heavy handed shit.

Avatarfags are even worse than normal tripfags because in addition to attention-whoring, they also clog up the thread's image limit with complete eyesores, normally in the form of obnoxious kawaii-uguu anime characters, but sometimes...even worse.

It really ought to be a bannable offense.

No, as I already explained, he's demonstrably preferable to you. If I find him annoying, which honestly I don't but that's irrelevant, filter! It's as simple as that. I filter him, and then I don't put up with any annoying posts from him ever again

If I find you annoying, and I do, I just try to ignore stupid posts that look like yours or carry on with a pointless conversation if for some reason I feel like I have a point that can be made, even though any point I make will either be forgotten, ignored, mocked, or some combination thereof. Let's compare that to some of the good namefags.

Wasteland Warrior- The reason roleplaying games were invented is because they knew that one day, someone would come along who would accomplish such feats of incredible awesomeness, that every other gaming medium would only impede him. His stories are the stuff of legend, and he's contributed much more QUALITY content than Golden Neckbeard. The Kender story is worth its weight in gold.

STORYTIEM- In addition to a thoroughly entertaining ongoing campaign, he's also been keeping the /tg/ rap threads alive. Haven't seen him around in a while, but the sheer amount of OC he's submitted is mind-boggling. The only people who submit more OC are quest thread authors (except quest threads suck). He's also the only avatarfag I can actually stand.

I apologized on 4chan - Well not all quest threads suck. You don't get a quest to 83 fucking installments without doing something right. This guy has probably contributed THE MOST original content by volume to the board.

MR RAGE- Okay, this guy is basically the posterchild for awesome tripfags. He posts often enough to not be forgotten, but not to the point of being an annoying attention whore. He never uses avatars to post, and almost always says something awesome. 10/10 would read again.

Golden Neckbeard, in my book, is only a few points above Zhakuvaan. He's not as all-out fucking rage inducing in everything he does, but goddamn if he isn't a naked avatarfagging attention whore.

Can people just stop tripfagging already? You're fucking up the whole idea behind 4chan. And no, before you have to spout it like a mindless child, this has nothing to do with "legion".

Anonymity is the only reason 4chan is good. It's the only reason we're any fucking different from any old shitty forum.

Anonymity ensures that there can be no lasting internet drama, because the guy I just called a stupid faggot might as well be the guy I'm not commending for his good ideas on another subject. I have no preconceived ideas of the people I talk to. So we can skip all the shit and get down to business.

And you're actively shitting on all that. I've just demonstrated why you all are the cancer. For no other gain than personal internet fame. That doesn't ultimately mean fucking shit. There is no other reason to tripfag across threads than for shitty egoistic reasons.

    download 4chan filter at: userscripts.org/scripts/show/33916
there will appear a box in top right corner of your browser when visiting 4chan.
Use it to hide posts containing various expressions (for example, trips). Use a semicolon ';' to separate expressions.
The characters .*+?^${}()|[]/\ are RegEx operators. To use them as normal characters, add a backslash '\'. Thus to filter 'right?', you'd use 'right\?'.

Whooo boy. This was a pretty darned good thread, players making their GM go crazy because the GM tried to make THEM go crazy.

How the hell did we devolve into a namefag-tripfag hatefest...?

As for the OP, if said person hasn't said, "FUCK THIS SHIT, I'M OUTTA HERE!"

Your players want to be Big Damn Heroes. They expect to be above and beyond the normal dude in every way. That's why a, "realistic campaign with consequences" doesn't work out too well. If I'm playing a role-playing game, and I'm a Player Character? I expect to be either a Big Damn Hero, or a Mischievous Fucking Villain.

That could just be me, but I suspect differently. I say you go the, "Supermax Prison" Wait for them to go A-Team and build a tank out of a paper clip, two pairs of boxers, and a single piece of electrical tape. There is absolutely no sense of responsibility for your posts in an anonymous environment. If you want proof of this, go to OPERATORchan and compare the conduct of the local tripfags (there are a lot of them) and the conduct of the local OPERATORs (their equivalent to anonymous). You'll find substantially more trolling and shitposting among the latter.

The use of tripcodes allows the best of both worlds. You can easily abandon a tripcode if the drama grows too great, but most people will want to maintain some level of attachment to their name, so they'll often avoid intentionally shitposting. There's a reason that all of /tg/'s best posters are tripfags (Mr. Rage and Dagda both spring right to mind).

Also, that picture is really not a fair critique of the philosophy. To be objectivists, they'd have to be engaging in fair trade of service and labor without violating one another's rights. It's like criticizing Christianity by saying that having people follow the ideology just results in non-stop crusades.

Other boards, I don't care, but on /tg/ there are people who have invested heavily in their own intellectual property.

Be it character ideas, art, game systems, campaign design, or whatever, people like to take credit and be known for something they created. At the very least, knowing who the author of something is makes it easier to find things associated with that person's work.

Forcing anon on a board like /tg/ would destroy the ability of people to be associated with the content they create or participate in. I'm not saying that everyone wants recognition for something they did, but if you think samefagging is bad now, hoo boy, you're in for a rude awakening.

It's not going to happen anyway, so I guess you're just going to have to learn to deal.

The consequences aren't just 'your characters are gone'. They've now got to play through the experience of being in prison. And not just the daily scheduled rectal abuse. The gangs, the prison politics, the treachery, the struggle to survive. Crooked guards, abusive wardens, arbitrary punishments, random beatings. Let them have it.

Been there, done that. It sucks.

Not every group is meant for your style of play. Learn this, and if you cannot have fun with a style of play your group excels at, then find another group. Saves headache and heartache all around.

Its not about dumb/smart players. Its just about play style. They want to kick in the door and get them some bad guys. What they were doing was leveling some not-so-subtle hints that this is what they wanted. You ignored them, and everyone suffered.

He's a cool guy, he's just a terrible DM, but he wanted to DM something fierce so we let him. The problem is he doesn't grasp the fact that the player characters lived in that world as well, he see's his planet of hats as awesome heroic types while we're outsiders who are just there to ruin their awesomeness. At our current stage and probably even later levels, dwarfs are downright impossible to hurt because of some catastrophe that made the survivors plot armor incarnate. Every dwarf we ever met punched us through walls for no reason and dodged or parried our attack with a stuck up scoff before knocking us out or down right destroying us without even a roll. We can't even avoid fighting them because they attack us simply because they feel like it just so my DM can prove how awesome and invincible they are.

You still haven't addressed the fact that 4chan is an utter shithole. Compare /tg/ to any number of noteworthy gaming forums. You wont find even close to half the bullshit, shitposting and trolling on those forums that you'll find on ANY board of 4chan. The reason for this is simple: anonymous posters don't have responsibility to their names.

A name is much like a lock. It wont stop someone really determined to be a piece of shit from being a piece of shit, but it will keep honest individuals honest.

Just for the sake of argument, how would 4chan be any better without trips? In fact, I submit the opposite argument.

Without names and complete anonymity, people tend to act like complete assholes to one another. Sure, it prevents lasting drama, but it doesn't change the fact that we have to deal with this crap every day, multiple times a day, in every thread and even some threads purely made to troll.

Banning doesn't really work so much either. Since there isn't really a way to track who posts what, and even the mods have their hands full.

And then we have the spam. Which verification has helped to reduce, though not eliminate. Since people who wish to spam the hell out of threads or boards can still do so, albeit with slightly more effort.

There are other issues as well, such as not being able to contact people you enjoyed talking with or seeing their threads.

Heres a condensed version of what I just said: Forums aren't perfect, but at least due to names they help you identify trolls and assholes easier, as well as often get people banned since they're responsible for what they post. Which is waaay better than all the trolling crap we have right now.

So basically your argument is that 4chan sucks and nobody should browse it because its so bad? Why are you still here again? Nobody wants you here.

4chan has always been this way, this is the people who come here, a name or tripcode will not change this because the culture is like this. It would only make the trolling less subtle and more dull to read.

It's a well known fact that anonymity plus an audience equals a massive dickface. This has been proven in many environments and has indeed been the subject of many social experiments. When you take away the consequences of acting in a certain manner, people become far more likely to act in that manner.

Now, 4chan is posted on primarily by anonymous individuals. It is one of the absolute worst boards on the internet for non-stop trolling and faggotry. Many forums require that you take on an identity, the trolling and faggotry in these places is FAR less than it is on 4chan. These two facts are highly related.

I chuckled while writing that. We're arguing over the internet about whether or not people should or shouldn't do what the creator of the site allows, but condemns in public forums. So, basically - we're both trolling and being trolled. Says a whole lot about the media in question, as well as its participants.

Good-natured /tg/ brofist, because love it or not, neither of us is going anywhere.

There is a reason tripcodes exist, but it has nothing to do with establishing "forum reputation". Tripcodes are there so that you can identify yourself WITHIN A THREAD if other posters have an interest in following your progress--say, for example, if you're a drawfag and you, specifically, are asked for advice based on your skills.

There is no point, none, in tripfagging for the purpose of "forum reputation" other than attention whoring. You say "BUT BUT BEING ANON MEANS YOU'RE NOT ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE THINGS YOU SAY". That's true, but think of it this way. Any tripfag can "turn off" their tripcode at any time they want. For all you know, Golden Neckbeard could have posted fifteen edition warz threads, twelve elf slave wat do threads, and uploaded 2 gigs of furry porn. You would never know. Then, on the rare occasion that he had something constructive to say, all he has to do is turn the tripcode back on. We only see the posts he WANTS us to see. So he could easily delude us all into thinking that 100% of his posts are quality content, when the actual percentage could be, say, 1%.

Now you might say, this problem can be remedied by requiring EVERYONE to use a trip, at all times. But then you lose the numerous benefits of anonymity: In an anon board, you don't have to worry about e-drama. You don't have to worry about a fight in one thread staining the discussion in another thread. You can feel free to post creative content without having to worry about getting ridiculed. You can say that "normal" forums have less trolling than /tg/, but /tg/ is unquestionably better at Getting Shit Done. And I'm not entirely convinced that "normal" forums have less trolling at all. More likely, it only SEEMS that way because threads have an unlimited lifespan, whereas here, once a thread dies there is an interest in somebody resurrecting it. I'm a regular at the J.R.E.F. forums, and I can tell you the trolls we have there are just as bad, if not WORSE, than the ones we have here. You just don't notice it because they aren't starting new threads every single day.

You can easily remove or re-add a tripcode to your posts. moot always posts anonymously unless its an important thread or a question he wants directly answered (also the reason mods dont post as MODERATOR all the time.)

Notice how he suddenly stops posting when the argument flared up, ONE other person comes into this thread and tries to defend tripfagging with all his might.

I haven't done so myself, but if anyone took the time to study it I'd dare guess they post in the exact same way.

Throwing in my two cents about effectively jailing players in D&D settings. Taking into account just how cruel of a place medieval settings can be, casters are usually the worst off. Being that overseers, slavers and gaolers might just torture them or whip them for the hell of it at any given time, getting your full night's sleep to regain your spells... Yeah, ain't happening.
Thieves and bards and other such classes with lock picking skills? Manacles do wonders to keep your hands from opening the locks. Then you need a bit more inventiveness to explain how you snuck a bobby pin onto your person.
Probably the worst to try to keep jailed? Barbarians. Everyone who plays barbarian has stupid high strength and then they rage and it just gets worse.

well the thing is, people can change their writing style as much as they want to. their words, sentences, lines. it doesnt show that its the same person.

I'm a good example of that. I keep changing the way I write for every post I make and sometimes when I need to prove a point I can do it several times in one post. In fact, most posters post in a very non-identifiable way since 4chan has standards in how people write. leet speech being instantly rewarded with a "get the fuck out inhuman scum of the earth."

To suppose that any singular anonymous has an identifiable writing style is just a pretentious point of view which seems like a last ditch effort in a pro-tripfag argument. But lets not go back to that shall we old chap? We're much too good for such petty arguments.

Also this is a board where role playing takes a large prevalence. If people can't differ in writing styles then I'd sure hate to roleplay with them.
