    >Jumping right in. New folks are welcome, but you should really read through a bit of the archives before contributing. Part 11 onwards has a good recap of all important details.

Episode 12 recap: You are disguised as a noble in a high society masquerade at the estate of the corpulent Lord Poulstet, with the intent of winning Lady Stelton over to your dubious cause.

"You are not from Hierotoria, then?" Poulstet asks, taking a hose as it is passed to him and pulling out a lungful of thick smoke. He puffs out perfect rings as he awaits your answer.
"No, sir, Blackheed means to show me a bit of the real noble high life, I should think," you say, feigning embarrassment.
"Well marvelous! Marvelous! He certainly sent you to the right place. You simply must meet Lady Stelton, a good woman to be on good terms with, I should think!"
Stelton betrays no hint that she knows who you are, smiling and nodding from behind her domino mask before puffing a cloud of smoke in your direction.
"And here's Lady Trestiere, Lord and Lady Inklens," Poulstet says, going around the room and pointing with the meat-nubs on the end of his hand. "Lord Pillorist, the Ladies Belvetrist, their consort Elias, Lady Desdemoen, and of course, on my personal invitation, the gem of the ball, the incomparable Elegy," his fingers waggle for emphasis as he gestures at the black-dressed woman, upper half of her face obscured by a featureless mask of porcelain. Her dress is cut low and sleeveless, tantalizing flesh bared to the smoky room. She smiles at you, inclining her head and showing just a glint of white teeth.
It is a smile you have never been able to forget.

What do you guys think of casually mentioning the whole Fulgrim being murdered incident to them? We're supposed to be out of town so we can mention it in the point of view that we want to hear more about it and by doing so, we can possibly get 3 goals done: 1) Lady Stelton might pay more attention to us since we Fulgrim and ourselves, 2) We can hear the opinions of the other nobles around us and see what their thoughts on the matter are and if they might support us or not and 3) We can see Elegy's reaction to hearing our name/situation.

You are thankful for the mask, because it hides your look of utter shock and stupor. You step back, taking a seat in one of the comfortable chairs, trying to scrape your composure back together. Wetting your lips with your tongue, you steady your breathing and try to remain suave over the knots in your stomach.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Lady Elegy. You have a dazzling smile. One that hopefully means you've had a happy and peaceful life thus far."
You see the corners of her lips turn up into a controlled smile. She takes a drag from a hookah hose, making you wait for her reply before she responds, her words muffled by streams of smoke.
"Of what use is peace?" she says. "If I wanted to die in my sleep I would never get out of bed. But happiness I have, goodsir DeVir, and I thank you for your kind words."
Poulstet guffaws, along with the titterings of several of the other assembled nobles.
"Marvelous!" he repeats, his apparent buzzword. "My dear, I must simply never let you out of my sight." Elegy nods her head before blowing an exaggerated kiss to the enormous jolly host.
"Goodsir DeVir," one of the Belvetrist sisters pipes up. "How did you come to meet Lord Blackheed? He's always in attendance, but he rarely hosts parties of his own."

"Oh, our families are old friends. The DeVirs are sort of a rural nobility, so Blackheed took it upon himself to try and show me what the city life was like. I must say, I am impressed."
    Poulstet takes a theatrical bow.
"But of course, but of course. Nothing to it. The parties make it bearable to actually go to court." the room erupts into laughter at this.
"Actually, Lady Stelton," you say, proceeding with caution. "I can't be sure, but have we met before? I've only been in the city a short time, but...perhaps when you were traveling at some point?"
Stelton looks at you, still with no apparent recognition. Finally she shrugs.
"I don't believe so, but then again I see so many like you."
    Poulstet clucks with his tongue.
"Now now, my boy, don't be discouraged. Once you get beneath that steel shell she's quite the friend to have."
"I don't doubt it," you say truthfully.
Lord Pillorist, the balding beanstalk to your right, coughs up a lungful of smoke and passes one of the snakelike hookah hoses to you.

We have to say something to get Lady Stelton's attention on us. We might not get another chance to talk to her and I doubt we'll get the chance to talk to her in private if we let the convo go as it is. Perhaps we should do as someone in a previous thread mentioned in talking about stories. I think he said the topic would be awkward situations and then vaguely go over the incident we had with her in the past where Fulgrim's hushblade got killed so only she'd recognize it. Actually, now that I think about it, Elegy might as well since we told her what happened.

Here was the post in the last thread I'm talking about:

If not, barge in, and remind her of unfortunate meetings, one we are younger over a sleeping man's bed and with two blackbirds, one dead, one alive, the second while we are languishing in incarceration and she saves us from boredom with a trip to visit a private island resort (I hope this is norm for nobles).

Perhaps we should make it more a story in some manner though. That should catch Lady Stelton's attention for sure and possibly Elegy's.

    I love you guys.

You sense the conversation drifting towards nationalist politics, from which you fear it will never recover.
"Gentlemen, ladies, please," you say nonchalantly. "Firstly, how can we toast to the triumph of the Imperium over Confederate dogs when I have no glass?" No sooner are the words out of your mouth than a snifter filled with almost sweet-smelling liquor is sloshed into your hand.

"I like you lad," Poulstet says, slopping some drink on his bare chin. "You'll go far in Hierotoria, mark my words."
"I heard," you say, leaning in for dramatic effect. You hear the sound of seats shifting as the others oblige. Elegy leans in with the others, though Stelton remains aloof, staring off into a corner and puffing lazily on a hose.
"I heard," you begin again, "that a few years back, one of the Alchemist apprentices went mad, and betrayed his master, killing him with the very same poison he was taught to brew," you add some dramatic embellishments, because what the hell.
"Yes, I think I heard something like that," Poulstet says, wiping off his moistened chin and looking ponderous in thought and girth. "Just last year I believe. Whole thing blew over, if I remember correctly. Some people say the apprentice was proven innocent, others say he broke his way out of prison, though," he chuckles, more of a gargle really, "I doubt that."
Elegy listens as attentively as everyone else, but you can feel Stelton's eyes boring into you without even looking.
"You heard about this down south, some bit of rumormongering?" Lord Inklens says. You nod.

You begin, talking with your hands and an even storyteller's rhythm. You feel slightly relaxed, perhaps from the mouthful of smoke, but it is not so much as to be a distraction.
"Long ago, when animals still had the gift of higher mind, and before the Darkening that blotted out all but the indelible dreams of Man, a sparrow toiled in dust and labor beneath the talons of an owl. Wise and cruel, the owl was feared among all the birds for his sharp eyes and wicked beak. Not only could he take the head off a mouse (or disobedient sparrow), but with a single commanding clack, he could bring to his side a fearsome blackbird, who inked in pigments of night, by night took life upon life. The sparrow served the owl however he could, for to disobey was death. The Owl often boasted of growing fat on the hollow bones of lesser birdlings, and the sparrow was too aquiver to levy accusations of hyperbole."

    >> StonerDM !em3oEn8LAg 10/29/10(Fri)23:56 No.12618117
But despite his unending demands and apparent sadistic delight, the Owl was alone in the circle of fear that protected and empowered him. The blackbird made an ill companion, for though an effective killer it was a stupid beast, a fearsome thug at best. But in the sparrow the Owl saw a glint of ambition, a kernel of potential that he hoped to plant in bitter soil and water with hardship until it was forced to grow strong. Some part of his tyrant’s mind ignored that he might be crafting a threat, and instead longed to create another in his image, who he could look to as a triumph, an equal perhaps, or even a successor, for the Owl had no illusions of conquering Time as easily as he did the lesser birds around him.

So it was that when the Owl’s blackbird came fluttering into the bird’s withered, twisted hardwood roost, breathlessly cawing about a falcon with delusions of besting the Owl, the wizened creature turned its harsh eyes on the sparrow, toiling about in some nook or hollow.
“Sparrow,” the Owl said. “You will go with the Blackbird and see to it that this killing is carried out properly. Stay above him, that he might cloak you in his feathers of night, and descend upon this Falcon while he sleeps. Watch as the Blackbird tears out his heart, and then return, and tell me what you have learned.”
Wordlessly afraid, the Sparrow could only nod. The Blackbird clacked its beak in anticipation of the coming violence, almost lasciviously, and led the Sparrow away.
    >> StonerDM !em3oEn8LAg 10/30/10(Sat)00:04 No.12618200
The Sparrow was racked with guilt as he paced the lower levels of the Owl’s roost. Blackbird was elsewhere, preening his oily feathers and sharpening his talons. While Owl roosted and Blackbird preened, the Sparrow crept away, flying low to the Falcon’s roost. Fearing that they would recognize him as the Owl’s servant and kill him on sight, he pecked a simple warning into the bark of the tree, though his small beak ached from the effort. Tentatively hopeful that at least the life of another would be saved, he returned to the Owl’s nest, sore but comforted.
The Sparrow was buffeted relentless by the high cold winds of the Blackbird’s flight, but eventually they reached the lush green roost of the Falcon, swooping in silently to the upper limbs.
“Stay out of sight and let me work,” the Blackbird croaked, scraping his talons on the limb to test their sharpness.
    >> StonerDM !em3oEn8LAg 10/30/10(Sat)00:09 No.12618255
Sparrow puffed out its feathers and followed obediently behind the Blackbird. He had failed, he thought to himself as they descended. No one had seen his warning, and he would be forced to watch the Falcon’s death throes beneath the ripping talons of the Blackbird. They crept to the center of the tree while Sparrow’s little heart pounded in his chest.
Falcon slept peacefully, his head tucked under one wing. His feathers were grayed and tawny with experience, and his breathing seemed uneven. The Blackbird crept up, tongue darting out to taste the cool air. Sparrow stayed behind in the shadows, and his eyes grew wide as he saw a Raven in the corner of the room, Falcon’s own champion unseen by the Blackbird. Hoping that someone had seen his dire warning after all, he remained silent.
The Raven was swift and efficient, and the Blackbird uttered only a single squawk before its throat was slashed, not even enough to stir the aged Falcon from his slumber. It was then that the Sparrow saw yet another figure present at this heinous exchange, the hawk-eyed daughter of the Falcon, watching the retaliation of her Raven with what birds would term a smile.

“Come forth, little Sparrow,” Falcon’s daughter said sternly. The Raven clacked its bloody beak with embers in its eyes. “Do not be afraid, this Deathbringer is not for you.” With a caw, the Raven retreated to preen the gore out of its feathers, and Sparrow stepped into the heart of the tree.
“Ah, the Owl’s young ward. I assume you are to be thanked for all this?”
The Sparrow stumbled over its words.
“I…didn’t want anyone else to get hurt.”
“Of course not. But these things happen. That is the truth of the world.”
    Sparrow nodded glumly.
“I will give you your life, little one, if you will tell a message to your master in return. Tell him he trifles with more than one aging Falcon. Without his Blackbird thug, he is nothing but a posturing fool.”
Sparrow nodded. Falcon’s daughter swept her wing outwards, buffeting the little Sparrow with wind.
“Then go. And do not think I will forget this kindness.”
    >> StonerDM !em3oEn8LAg 10/30/10(Sat)00:16 No.12618346
Sparrow returned to face the Owl’s rage. He delivered the message as he was asked, and the Owl nearly tore his heart out in anger. The Sparrow had accepted this fate, and went peacefully towards death, but the Owl stayed his talons. He saw that the Sparrow had become his only companion, a commodity he had scorned his entire life, exiling himself into a loneliness that had overcome him. The Sparrow learned the value of close allies, of family, and of mercy, but it was the Owl the Gods set out to teach when they wrote this happening into the Everscrolls."

    >1,000 words in half an hour, yeeeeeeeeeeeah

You conclude with a dramatic silence, unseen sweat pearling on your face from the mental strain of stringing together the events of the past into a plausible children's narrative. The nobles in the room slowly begin murmuring amongst themselves, and it is Poulstet that starts the clap, pudgy hands slapping together, almost echoing even in the curtained and cloistered chamber. The others quickly join in, except for Lady Stelton, who has pierced you with a gaze that threatens to burn off her mask. Elegy is harder to read, but her clap seems forced, and her eyes are anywhere but yours, perhaps forced as well.

"What a splendid morality play," Poulstet says at last. "I think I might remember being told the very same one as a child."
    You doubt it.
"I don't doubt it," you say.

You linger behind the departing nobles, smiling and bowing as people meet your eyes for a moment. Finally you are the only one left in the room. With a determined look, you turn to the back of the room, only to find that Elegy is already gone, the door to the hallway left ajar. Following, you push the door open, peering into the well-decorated hall beyond. At the end of plush carpeting, the door to the outdoors is shut. Through a glass in-pane you can see rain illuminated by moonlight.

You move to the door, stepping out into the night air.
The balcony is unshaded from the droplets of rain, the high roof of the estate climbing behind you. There is no sign of elegy on the rain-slicked boards of the balcony. Cautiously, you look upwards, at the high sloping roof of the estate. Peaked at the tip of the roof, you can see a dim figure crouched. No...not crouched...
You jump back as the figure descends rapidly, a machine gun of noise on the rattling shingles. It lands in front of you, sword already drawn. You go instinctively for a vial of Dragon's Blood, but the figure calls out.
    "I wouldn't, Alchemist."
    You recognize that voice...
"I've put far, FAR too much work into this," the man says, his hood blowing back in the breeze.
He said he was going to visit his wife and family. He was the only one who left...

    "You'll never get away, Alchemist."
    You pull out a
    >Sunphere
, biting your lip and tossing it towards the Hushblade.
    >6
Once again you successfully blind yourself as the sunsphere bursts on the wet floor of the balcony, creating a thunderous explosion and flash of light.
The Shadowdust seems to actually absorb most of the painful light, but your vision is still flashed into blurriness, especially in the rising rain.
"Blast you to the Abyss, ALCHEMI-urk!" The Hushblade's rage is cut off in a choking noise as you hear the sound of his sword impacting on the planks like a particularly heavy raindrop. You rub your eyes, trying to clear your vision and make out what's going on, make clarity from the struggling blur in the center of the balcony.
When you finally clear your eyes, you see the Hushblade's choking purple face. He is on his knees, hands scrabbling at his neck. He is supported by the barbed whip of razor wrapped around his neck. Following the line of the whip, eyes still blurry from rain and irritation, you see a black heeled leg digging into his back.
Elegy grits her teeth and smiles as she pulls back, curling the whip towards her self and dragging its barbs across the Hushblade's throat. He lets out a final choking gasp before going limp, his body suspended on its knees by her whip and the leverage of her shoe in his back.

You slip through the smoking den and back into the main ballroom; the pack of partygoers has died off somewhat, but there is still quite the throng clustered on the marble floors. You make your way towards the center; Poulstet catches you near the mushroom-stuffed ducklings.
"Ahh, goodsir DeVir, there you are!" he leans in, wrapping an arm around you.
"Making the rounds? Talking the talk, meeting new people?" He asks drunkenly before laughing, seemingly at nothing.

Go back to the party. We have a very big job ahead of us, and to accomplish it without completely making ourself someone else's tool we will need to play politics like a master. Which we're not, but if we don't even try we can't possibly succeed.

Time to meet people and make as good an impression as we can on as many of them as possible while learning as much as we can about as many of them as possible- particularly any factional leanings.

You chuckle along with Poulstet, leaning against each other and guffawing. You pause in your laughter to witness Elegy descending the stairs, her arms bare and all of her inexplicably dry. She meets your eyes for a moment through her mask.Turning away you release yourself from Poulstet's jiggling embrace.
"Goodsir Poulstet," you say, affecting a drunken stumble. "I am not as accustomed to the rigors of revelry as you fine nobles here." You trace a finger tip in a salute along the brim of your hat. "The interloper must retreat. I hope to see you all again while my stay in the city continues, and of course, I will see some of you some few days hence," you tip your hat to Lady Stelton, whose lips twitch into a smile for the blink of an eye.
Your carriage is summoned and you are borne away, mind swimming with the gravity of the evening's events.

The carriage pulls up to the Blackheed apartments well after midnight. You find Dask curled up by the doorway, twitching fitfully in his slumber. Sebastian is awake in the parlor, sipping on an amber brandy.
"Well?" he says quietly in the still, candlelit room. "How did it go?"

I thought that we were working on sense boosters. So perhaps some sort of gel that we can put in our nostrils to smell the fear coming off our enemies. And possibly also the food cooking in the kitchen, the faint scent of poison in our drink, and/or random trace scents of things to help us while working with delicate alchemical substances.

Improving our Firearms skill before we set to work on the Daemon has been suggested a few times. We could make a pistol/derringer version for when we're looking sharp but need to pack a punch (like tonight).

It's also been suggested that we make a rapid-wound-treatment substance. We are trained in medicine, after all, and we're sure to need it when we completely botch a roll or find someone dying from a gunshot.

You spend a few hours at work on some SCIENCE before finally falling into exhausted slumber, but you make no major breakthroughs this evening.

You awaken refreshed and excited. You check over your notes from the previous evening, trying to glean the next technological breakthrough from their multidirectional speculations. You hope Blackheed sends you some of those promised schematics soon.

"Sire," Paxton says, poking a wrinkled head into your chamber. "There is a particularly stunning young woman here to see you," he sniffs. "I...wouldn't keep that one waiting, sire. Though, of course, M'Lord, it is not my placeto impose."
