For these have no part in that which is lowest, but dwell in fullest power, immovably and perfectly established in the Most High, and receive the Divine Immanence above all passion and matter, and manifest God, being attentively open to divine participations.

You think this thing with billion eyes is going to wreck your shit, only to send a message from your patron god, pat you on the head, and give your party a nice healing with a small temporary stat boost on the way out.

And then you run into the fallen angels who look exactly the same, but are evil.

They're not really evil so much as rebellious. Biblical good and evil holds the idea that anything of God is "Good" while anything not of God or willingly apart from God is "Evil" and as such is a mode of morality vastly different from the one most of us adhere to today. I know that the Grigori fell for taking wives among men, taught the race of man the secrets of civilization, and wouldn't really be considered evil by today's standards, but because they held Man above God, they fell. Of course, Satan originally wasn't really a fallen angel at all, so much as some other angelic (?) being that tested the Faithful by attempting to lure them from God, all the while hoping that they resisted his temptations.

I don't think that's Azrael. As far as I can remember, Azrael never really got a physical description. I think that may be another interpretation of a Cherub that plays up the "wings and eyeballs" aspect more than the "animal-faces" aspect, or else based on a different description of a Cherub.

I think that a game run in a sort of psuedo-Biblical setting would be pretty rad. You'd have inter-Tribal politics, divine revelation, horrific creatures that exude fear and awe from every metaphysical pore, and a half-insane bloodthirsty deity that demands perfection from his followers all ruled by a priestly caste. It wouldn't be intended as a sort of "Take that" to the Bible, though. No, I want this game to honor it by adhering to it as closely as possible in theme, which is an entirely different thing from whatever modern "Biblical Literalistic" claim, lying bastards. Honestly, Abrahamic mythology is pretty kickass and it just doesn't get that recognition. Plus, there'd be a lot of room for weird adversaries, too. The various Gods of Persia and Babylon, competing interpretations and faiths, mad desert-wizards, and the like. I think that the Bible is filled to the brim with awesome campaign ideas, and we just don't pay enough attention to what is supposedly the most influential text in the history of the world.

That's because the Norse pantheon was, in a very real way, small-time. They were man writ large, not incomprehensible elder beings. They were identifiably human, only greater, and subject to all the things that normal human dealt with. Odin is tricked by a young girl who sics the hounds on him. Thor can't cross the river due to an obstinate ferryman. They are fated to die at Ragnarok, the Doom of the Gods. They're supermen, not beyond men, and that's what makes Norse mythology compelling, I think.

Well, Lot was pretty much the only decent man in Sodom, so he and his relatives got a pass. And, as you can remember, there were plenty of times when after doing some majorly wrong sh%t people were forgiven.
In fact, God's punishment generally wasn't directed at the wicked. It usually had some object lesson - like one he had given Abraham by stopping by and having a little civil chat

Though I'm getting a minor exposure to Hinduism from an Art history class I have, and that is just all sorts of confusing. For a patriarchal society, Kali did not fuck around. Except when she kills Shiva, and then fucks around with him, or so I was told.

Angels can be really cool enemies/allies if they're done right.

The only problem I face is portrayal of their motives. It's hard to decide what exactly they want out of humans, seeing as god is omnipotent and all. Also, wether or not to feature already named angels (Gabriel, for example) or make up entirely new names.

I guess that's up to whoever is doing the story though.

Caesarepapism as i know the word occurs when the state undermines the church under itself. Like French kings did, after moving Popes to Avignon. Or when England just broke off from the main church. And later, with the princile "who owns the land, owns the faith". It was kinda natural reaction to Church trying to get state under itself.
Now, in the Bysanty, similar problems were occuring, without a doubt. But they had their own official POV: "symphony" - where church and state interact as equals and compliment each ither, since they deal with matters that, in principio do not intersect.
I use this term as i remember it; it's quite possible we were taught differently about it.

Another thing; apparently one day Shiva decided to stop having sex. His sexual energy turned him into a giant phallic symbol which would have destroyed the cosmos if the other gods didn't get a giant vaginal symbol to absorb the energy.
This is the sparknotes version, of course, but there is some wacky things in there (granted, the point of the story is that you need to keep your life in balance, and sexuality isn't inherently bad too).

    http://faculty.cua.edu/Pennington/ChurchHistory220/LectureTwo/caesaropapism.htm

    >It was normal practice, however, for the Eastern Roman emperor to act as the protector of the uiniversal church and as the manager of its administrative affairs . . . Emperors presided over councils, and their will was decisive in the appointment of patriarchs and in determining the territorial limits of their jurisdiction . . .

"State undermining the church" has many words describing it, caesaropapism is not merely removal of power from a religious institution and handing it out to a secular one like what happened in western reformation. The state and the church in the East were certainly not living in happy harmony either, in fact even the slavophiles of 19th century didn't dare to claim such of the most recent periods (Peter the Great and onwards). The word Caesaropapism has first and foremost always referred to the Byzantine Empire.

Yeah but you're a Catholic. Christians (Protestants) have to read the bible themselves. We have several "One Year" bibles that people can use to read the entire bible through in a year. I've done it once or twice myself. I think my dad is on number 4 now.

Christians (non-Catholic Christians) *do* read the bible, and are encouraged to study it. But even when we do read the bible all the way through there is theology, dogma, that strings all the inconsistencies together and tries to make sense of the whole. But really what it does is it strings all the inconsistencies together LOOSELY, with tons of "plot-holes", to serve a specific interpretation of the bible. All modern Christianity is way messed up beyond repair.

    But we read our bibles.

    Um.

I worked for quite a while at a Catholic book store. One of the most common things we sold were study bibles, along with the apologetics and the like. Catholics -do- read the bible; they're also encouraged to read the Liturgy of the Hours and other supplemental material.

This is entering into "hurp durp how dare they butter their bread on the bottom"/"durp hurp how dare they butter their bread on the top" territory here though. The stereotype is that no one actually reads the thing because they're either 1) too busy rejecting it or 2) too busy being sure they remember what's in there, when in reality it is answer 3) they're just too busy living period.

    Catholics don't read as much.

Catholics go to priests to get confess their sins rather than confessing it directly to God. Protestants confess their sins directly to God. I've dated Catholics, I've had bosses who were Catholics, and many friends who were Catholics. I've been to mass several times. You go into mass, you get your rituals and your readings and all that done, you go home, and you have almost no personal responsibility for your spirituality, including reading the bible. You want your sins forgiven? You go BACK to the Church. You want anything done? You go back to the fucking Church. Get the picture? Catholicism discourages initiative. It wants dependents, even more so than Protestantism.

CHRISTIANITY. IS. AWESOME. This thread is awesome! It's all so awesome!

Also, try not to think too much on the whole, "He was going to give his daughter to a rape mob!" thing. One way to look at the Old Testament is that YHWH is trying to guide humanity to the right place by any means necessary rather than being much to harsh in his criticisms of mankind. Part of doing that is.. sort of working AROUND your own creation to a great extent. If the law of the time of these fucked up little meat creatures says women are property, and are treated accordingly (raised to be useless besides for bartering), you sorta got to roll with it. Free will is frustrating like that. You can't just MAKE humanity do what you want.

This line of thought goes a long way in explaining a lot of screwy things in general.. and mismatching values as compared to modern times. You gotta make humans go down the right path (by making them run away screaming down it like wussy little girls) and try not to sweat the small stuff.

You can't exactly deny that humanity isn't improving over time. Sometimes it's two steps forwards one step back, but we always make at least the one step.

(Too Late Disclaimer: This post was made entirely from a "if you want to justify this shit religiously" point of view)

But not things like "Man was sculpted from mud," and "stone adulterers to death."
Instead "Mankind is a product of Earth (mud)," and "people who agree to monogamous relationships and then screw around are poor of character, and should not be praised."
If you choose to follow the Book of course. Plenty of secular reasons for both of those too.

The author of the +mmortals +andbook series, Craig Cochrane, has such an inexplicable fixation on the concept of density that I believe him to actually be Suika Ibuki. Something I saw earlier, it was called a Ardent Destroyer or *something* Destroyer. I only got a slight glimpse at it though.

Basically those things -aren't- supposed to exist (opposite energies neutralizing), but under the right conditions they can be brought to existence. However, the natural discord of their energy can cause them to have violent energy switches and emotional/mental switches. They do have one major advantage, they are not necessarily bound to either side's limits and therefore are allowed to expand in power as far as they can as long as they can control it.

Basically, it's an entity of no rules but the ones it follows itself with exceedingly violent energy outbursts if not under extreme control.

There's a reason why in the bible the first things angels say is "do not be afraid" and the second thing they say is that they are not gods and for those present not to worship them.

Also, Lucifer and his fallen are different from the grigori and their nephilim children. I guess the war in heaven happened before? after?

In DtF, the grigori were an experiment performed by the Fallen which got slightly out of hand. The Kaballah gets a little weird as to when on earth the nephilium actually showed up, but they and their off-spring were the reason for the flood.

Now can you guess why Aku sucks from a gameplay perspective? As much as I love him, he's just not very good.

    >>12536275
    I'll look in to it.

210 points for a chassis with astral one? That's begging to be mage dueled to death.
    >> Anonymous 10/22/10(Fri)21:11 No.12538706
The bible only explicitly states death if you look upon YHWH's face, which is why moses was only allowed to see the back of his head when discussing the Ten COmmandments.

Just so. Admittedly, it is Immortal which negates the sting somewhat, and it does have a dragon form, but it can be easily neutralized by any solid player and won't have good magic paths or good scales to fall back on.

People looked at Angels, though. Admittedly, they flipped the shit out, but they didn't die just by looking as is the case with ol' Tetragrammaton. Besides, dying by looking at the true face of God doesn't seem like a bad way to go.

There is a setting like that already:

How is it? I'd seen it before, but I didn't give it much thought at the time.

It's pretty great thematically, not so sure about crunchy part.

Thematic is just fine. I don't really need the crunch, so long as there's a springboard for ideas. Thanks for the share.

Personally, I've been using bibilical accounts of angels COMBINED with ufo accounts of cryptids for my campaign's eldrich abominations.

So, azreal + mothman got me this

A fractal-like expanding circle of black wings covered in red glowing eyes that cause you go blind , deaf and mute when you hear it singing with the voices of a 1000 dead men?

That works, too. Angels + damn near anything can be a suitably awesome eldritch horror, and I use awesome in the old sense of the word here.

    Not letting this thread die.

Also, this "My body is burning lines" angel looks somewhat interesting to me.

I like this idea for an encounter - the pc's encounter a heavenly creature that tells them "to have no fear". The PC"s immediately KNOW without a doubt, the creature is telling the truth.

It then proceeds to tear them a new asshole and eat their flesh, since you know, just because angels can MAKE you believe anything, doesn't mean you should.

Also, I like the idea that angels might be the equivalent of heavenly automatons, incapable of really making decisions for themselves. Perhaps Satan is the result of a failure of some heavenly equivalent of the 3 laws?
