The days pass plesantly. You have minimal reason, at the moment, to risk your life, and a plethora of things to leisurely spend your time on. Studying what magic you can, practicing it, as well. Your progress has, irritatingly, slowed, but Scinnari assures you are the fastest learner she has ever taught. Researching what you have and found, particularly the disturbing imagery from the cult's temple. Though you wished you could fully loot the cults' library, the priests' insistence on informing the local watch-equivalent prevented you from doing so. Even with the emerald, an artifact that allows you to become invisible at will, it seems too risky. 'Professional Adventurers' you doubt, but the Sealord's Guard are there in force, along with some specialists. The risks are too great.

But there are still other things you can do. Cygnis (who asked you not to reveal her true nature to the priests of the temple. Oh, the irony, delicious irony.) and Arman have been researching what they can of the temple, this 'Binder', 'Unspeakable One'. Very little has been found, it or he (or she,) seems to be a dead god, having mostly passed from this world.
    >> Writer-dude !vf05RX1JTQ 10/04/10(Mon)20:25 No.12329852
As for the book you've extracted, you have not yet read it; Testing Scinnari's claims, you brought a control-group of humanoids to your lair, one at a time, to attempt to read the tome of note you took from the cult's temple: “The Book of the Binder; the Unspeakable One”. Without exception, all three of the humanoids exhibitted painful mental trauma, convulsing in spasm. Seizures and brain-damage, you think. Just in case, you chose to incinerate them rather than eat them.

Scinnari thinks that it is not a god of the lower planes, though you have extracted an admission that it could be, if it were a particularly xenophobic and un-trusting god; perhaps only those who are followers can read it.

Though you quite enjoy your lair, feeble and makeshift establishment though it is, you have been keeping up pretenses of being normal, especially with Cygnis revealed as a metallic dragon, a despicable, hypocritical, Gold. Despicable or not, though, you seem to have adequately mislead her, and she owes you a life-debt, adding to the ironic delight of the arrangement.

Scinnari has made use the time spent in Freeport-proper to acquire herself a longbow, a fitting weapon with her elven appearnace, and one she assures you she is skilled with. Jarrik has contacted you occsionally, suggesting a display for the gang of kobolds he has found living in the city's underbelly. As he described them, “They city kobolds. Weak. Not as good, Jarrik think. But Jarrik speaks to them. Jarrik think they be willing to believe.”

You receive occasional letters from both Arman and Cygnis, delivered by messenger to your inn. Nothing you wouldn't have figured out yourself, you are disappointed to find, but moderately interesting, and saving you the effort.

    Nine days after your arrival in Freeport, you receive a surprising letter from Cygnis;

    "Dear Cibach,
Once again, I thank you for rescuing me. Embarrassing as my predicament and condition were, and proud as I am, I am certain I would not have gotten out alive without help. As an offer of thanks of my own, and, since you, knowing who"

You notice, amused, that while the rest of the letter is very neat, the 'who' is smudged, and has ink drops, so that it could be read 'what', if you so desired.

"I am, I would like to offer you a profitable role in my designs upon the city, most notably the upcoming holiday. If you entertain political ambitions, it would be an ideal chance to establish yourself in the regions politics; if you don't, it would still be extremely lucrative for you.

    Awaiting,
    ~Cygnarassis"

"Scinnari." you say, entering your room at the inn. Glancing around, you see that she isn't there. A pity, but then again, she is no more fond of Cygnis... 'Cygnariassis' than Cygnariassis is of her. It might even be best to leave her behind; she probably would not approve of working with the gold unless the conditions were most profitable.

Dancing down that line of thought, you smile at the thought of the devil accusing the dragon of making bargains with too many strings.

Returning to the house of Cygnis, presumably Cygnariassis' humanoid persona, pause, running through a mental checklist of armaments, (You made sure to be armed, and brought the emerald, should this turn out to be a less than honest offer,), and potential escape routes. Now that you think to look for it, you realize that Cygnis' house is situated rather well for someone like her (or you,), and not only is it just wide enough that were you to revert, you would not have to touch anything on either side, but the surrounding houses are low enough that you could take off with extreme ease.

Advancing, you knock on the door, finishing your checklist with a recall of details you given away about yourself. The persona you used so far has suggested 'gentleman adventurer', and a small noble from a distant land travelling the world, hoping to find wealth and power. Not so far off, actually. For the best, you feel, since the best lies have enough truth in them to stand up to scrutiny. Or magic.

You have time to decide that you're probably a last of many sons, with title but no inheritance, before the door opens. The interior is far different from what you remember; the place has been cleaned up remarkably, and there actually seems to be a 'living area' of sorts, a pair of armchairs and a small loveseat around a low table.

"Sir Cibach! Quite an honor, come in, come in." Cygnis responds, answering the door. Wearing decent clothes, not covered in blood or scars, and no longer shaking, Cygnis turns out to be a pretty elf, something that no doubt, the cynical portion of your mind adds, contributed to Arman's interests in rescuing her.

Crossing the threshold, you follow her to the seat, asking "Sir? I won't deny it, but I don't think it's something I've brought up in this city."

"Of course not, Cibach, but I think you will be needing a title of some sort. Do you know about the upcoming festival? I think I may have mentioned it in my letter."

"You /know/ you mentioned it in your letter." you think to yourself, "Or if you didn't, I need to adjust my estimate of you down a few notches."

Aloud, you reply, "I've heard of it, but know nothing. I presume you intend to fill me in?"

"Of course." she says, sitting down on the loveseat across the table from you. You can see her shifting into 'lecture' mode, and hope that it would be the rambling, self-contradictory philosophy that golds are known for.

"Several hundred years ago, when this city was the literal pirate haven it is only reputed to be now, the first two Sealords, men by the name of Francisco and Drake, were the two most powerful pirates in the area. For reasons unknown, they decided to ally, and lead all the pirates of the port on a three month raid of the Continent, sacking towns, demolishing navies, and looting merchants up and down the coast, from the Floating Islands of the north to the Shattered Sea in the south.

"After more than three months, the returned, raid succesful. Common tale holds that they had so much plunder they could have replaced every ship they lost in solid gold, had they so desired. To stay succinct, as I doubt you have the interest in history I do, they later fought viciously for control of the city, Drake, who's name has been mutated to 'drac' over the years, eventually victorious, but, even mostly legitimate as the town is now, they still celebrate the return of that fleet, annually, shutting down the entire port for two days in the crudely-named 'Swagfest'."

"A day to party and a day to recover." you observe, earning a smile.

"Quite. Among other things, though, aspirants to the Council of High Captains, the city's ruling body," she offers by way of explanation, "Often utilize these days as time to make an name for themselves, ingratiate themselves with the populace, often by supporting or funding the festivities. In fact, a trader captain by the name of 'Lydon' is planning to make his bid for the Council."

There is a pause as she finishes, and you consider her words, predicting where she is going with this.
    >> Writer-dude !vf05RX1JTQ 10/04/10(Mon)21:13 No.12330369
"And you are offering me a place in festivities? A bid pre-packaged and paid for?" you guess. Her face lights up, and it seems you guessed correctly.

"Exactly! I have been... remotely running a small merchant company, and I have decided it is about time for the owner to make a bid. As I run it, the owner is mysteriously absent, and I was wondering whether you would like to assume the role?"

"Mysteriously absent.... I see. Ideally I would not end up that way myself." you comment, testing how far her humor extends. She seems to miss the phrases implications, taking it as a joke.

    "No, of course not."

"Very well... You want me to become your... pawn, puppet, etcetera, on the High Council, and in exchange.... What exactly?" you say, doing your best to treat the fine line between feigned morality, all too real greed, and maintaining your favorable reputation in her eyes.

"Well... I would, of course, be using this as an opportunity to get my... claws into the council." Cygnis begins, and you add knowledgeably,

"Of course. Gold.... dragons are known for their interest in guiding countries. That they may benefit from your wisdom no doubt." you say. You suspect you may be toeing the line, but 'Mr. Cibach' has so far been fairly bold.

"Yes, though, in my defense, it serves a double purpose of also keeping me occupied, though the centuries. So. Would you be willing to be "-Captain- Cibach Azaladon, free merchant and trader? Such an identity would, of course, require your own estate, and the funds to maintain it, if you are worried about the costs. And, of course, I would have no interest in controlling every aspect of the city; you would be free to pursue your own agendas on the Council as long as they don't conflict with mine."

"I must explore this further," you state, regretfully, "as while your offer is generous, I do not believe I would be happy as someone's Yes-Man, or rubber-stamp. Indeed, unless I had at least equal say, it would... most unpalatable to one of my ancestry." you finish. All true.

"I... can understand your issues, and I assure you my intentions are noble. It seems... crass to ask for 'at least equal status', considering that I am funding it myself. Hmm..." she says, thinking, or feigning it. She could have thought this out well in advance; certainly, putting together her own merchant enterprise would take some preparation, likely she had something like this planned even before she knew you. Or was kidnapped. While thinking, she stands, and retrieves a kettle from the houses' fireplace, setting it and two cups on the table. "If I were to ask for nothing without discussing it with you, would that be... suitable to satisfy your honor? As for material compensation, I could provide you with, as stated, an estate in the richer area of the city, and the funds to maintain it. I presume," she says, a tone that suggests she is only half serious, "that you are not the type to waste money away as soon as you receive them?"

"No more than I am one to make a pile of it and sleep on it." you reply, in a similarly facetious tone, accepting her proffered cup of tea.

[Did I miss anything, or do you have further suggestions?]

Hmmm. With our current identity as a normal elf, I don't think we'd be able to push for more than that. Having her discuss her plans with us gives us a heads on up anything we might need to deal with and she's giving us money which we can use to further our own goals and this gets us a bit of a political position in the area and lets us get more connections. I also am amused she didn't ask to hear what our goals might be so that could be useful if we're careful.

Unless someone can think of something else, I think it's satisfactory for the time being. Maybe use this chance to inquire into what she has planned once we're in position.

Actually, ask if we can get to a more equal status if we can eventually fund our position on our own overtime. Fair enough, she's doing it all now but if we can manage to do it on our own, it'd give her even more claws in the council if we eventually go separate and she use someone else as owner of her company.

Also worth trying to see if we can get her to teach us some tricks of the arcane nature/history of dragons/other things. Argue that we'd be more useful to her if we can do things on our own without relying on her might. That way she can remain hidden easier.

"So what would accepting this job entail, detail wise?" you ask, hooked. She smiles, and responds,

"Well, I don't expect your bid to be accepted immediately. It seems highly unlikely that you could come out of nowhere and and make the council, company presence and financial backing... withstanding." she says, shifting her weight. You suspect that if she were no acting 'proper', or were in her natural form, she would be lounging. And possibly even more satisfied with herself than she is. "I would want you to be a sociable, visible, and popular presence at the festival. You would be providing significant funding and sponsorship for the events, similar to Captain Lydon I mentioned previously. If you could befriend him, it would help, and you would be allowed to participate in the events he would be sponsoring. Victory would, of course, earn you public acclaim and popularity, I should think. Naturally, we too would have to think of some events, to make a suitable showing in comparison."

"Yes... That seems good. But what are your intentions once I do reach the council, if that occurs?" you ask, suspecting she might be dancing around the issue.

"I wish to... clean up the city somewhat. Make it more respectable. Perhaps guide it towards abolishing the slave trade, and becoming an actual player in the world's politics, rather than a rogue city-state. To make the place better to live in, and better to deal with." she finishes, evidently satisfied with her own explanation.

"Better to live in and deal with /for/ /who/?" you ask to yourself, but remain quiet and amiable.

"Well? Do we have an accord?" she asks, impatient, and, from the sound of her voice, delighted with the questions you've been asking. If you're any judge, you think she was expecting these, and you have confirmed her appraisal of yourself.

It's gonna be tough but I think this is a worthwhile risk to take. It'll require careful manipulations and backstabbing if it comes to it but we have the opportunity to have this place to be molded to be more important and then us sweeping in to take power.

Of course, you might want to wait for others to pitch in their thoughts based on how divided people were on sparing this dragon in the first place.

Also in long term i think we could let her have the city as long as that city be in our empire.

of course this might be wishful thinking since we would need to start somewhere namely this city.

we could manipulate the dragon to get the city to do what we want. policing actions to reestablish order in lawless regions. We can develop it from a distance while working under her and whatever we take basically becomes our own little town we can develop as we see fit. Letting us make a nice lair in the process.

Basing the monsters off the D&D 3.X monster manuals, abilities off the setting mechanics. Not actually using the game mechanics.

The setting I'm pulling together from a mishmash of generic fantasy, some quality fantasy sources (which, I fear, will become too clear when we get to that, though it's a few threads ahead, now.), and Forgotten Realms, the generic D&D setting that sort-of-sucks because it's flooded with high level NPCs. "Hmm.... There will probably not be a small enough crowd to choose two victors; perhaps we can change it into a large affair?" Cygnis asks, approving, despite her quibbles with the details.

"Yes," you agree, "We could pick two leaders, a 'Fransico' and 'Drake', and divide participants up into teams. Each leader is given a map of the city with the locations of our participating stalls.. Ports?" you ask, doing your best to fix her objections.

"Yes! And we can theme each stall after one of the major Continental cities they sacked! Fantastic!" she says, evidently delighted. From her end-table, she pulls the top piece from a stack of parchment, and begins writing, presumably notes for her to arrange this.

"Hmm... it doesn't tie in well, but it might work. There are the rumors of something in the bay, though, from what I hear. That may make it unpopular... A regatta, perhaps? Yes, I like that idea!" she says, adding to her parchment.

"Do you have a boat I could enter in it, then?" you ask, visions of power in your mind. If you could manage to win /all/ the competitions...

"I'm afraid the unwritten rules frown heavily on participating in ones that you yourself fund. And even if it wasn't, if you won too many of your own, it might call any victories into question..." Hunching over the table, she pulls another sheet, writing a message, as far as you can tell. Probably instructions to her officials for the merchant line. "I am overjoyed to have chosen you, Cibach, you are a

And, though I promised to fund this, I do not wish it getting too expensive, I'm sure you understand."

The estate is in the Merchant district. A much nicer, classier area of the city, not as old as the inner city, and with frequent patrols of the inhabitants private guards. The estate itself is not particularly lavish, extravagant, or large, but it is a very nice two story house, with a bottom floor and front garden suited to entertaining people, or holding receptions. While not as big as the ones around it, it seems to have a quite modesty and respectability.

"Well, I think we have most of it worked out, then." Cygnariassis eventually says, "Swagfest", she says as if the vulgar title is distasteful, "is the day after tomorrow, and I shall pass you further information as it becomes necessary. If there is nothing else, I should take my leave."

A, I think they can only be killed permanently if in their home, or a plane really close to their home. A demon could be killed on any of the Abyss' infinite planes, and a Devil on any of the nine hells.

"I.. A single question, before you go, do you know of how to unmake demons, or, in this case, devils? Permanently?"

Cygnis raises an eyebrow, but responds, "I believe the standard is killing them in their home plane, the abyss, or, in her case, the hells. I do not know how specific it needs to be, but I can look into it if you so desire."

You would like it, but would hate to ask a favor, or mitigate the debt she owes you, so instead you merely say, "No, don't trouble yourself, I can see to it. It's unnecessary, it just seems it might be useful. If you do find something, though, please tell me."

"Of course. And now, I guess I will leave you to move into your accommodations, *Free Captain* Cibach." she says. You show her to the door, and and half-bow as she departs. "Good afternoon." she calls back.

It is around two, by the sun in the sky, and you don't have a whole hell of a lot to move into your manor, unless you intend to bring your hoard. The day is clear and sunny, and you have two days before you are expected to be a showman.

Research into it is simple, the populace are fairly excited about it. From what you can tell, nobody actually has to participate. Some are on a 'show up' basis, such as something referred to as "One Eyed Davey's stand', or, such as the battle that will be put on in the harbor, mercenary groups and ships are hired to put on a show, and it is a not a competition. You suspect your swordplay competition would be on a show-up basis. Hmm... Perhaps you could enter that if you asked asked Lydon to be the judge? Details, details.

You find yourself moving through the rooms of the house, savoring it as your own. It is somewhat bare, and you will have to talk to Cygnis to get the funds to furnish it, (or shell out your own.). But you like it, it seems... a luxury you undoubtedly deserve.

From what you can tell, he's pushing for a seat on the council, possibly due to his waning fortunes as a merchant. (Those who hold the theory think that he has his heart set on some of Sealord Milton Drac's dirty money). A few people in the know agree with Cygnis' estimation that 'Finn', the individual who's money Lydon has borrowed, is not only less than pleased with Lydon's decision to sponsor swagfest rather than pay him back, but furious. Also, more possible Scinnari pictures because I think she's pretty cool and would hate to need to kill her.

An elderly mage, by the name of Anzan, is highly recommended from what you hear. Obviously, the thing to do is set about locating his premise.

Scinnari finds you, during your investigations, and you relate the days' news. She is nonplussed.

"So now we're the gold's catspaw. That does not seem very much of an improvement."

"Perhaps you missed the part where I mentioned that not only did we have a bid at the ruling body here, we have opportunities to gain personal influence with these people, and I can purchase back my independence as a politician whenever I want. Further, we have private accommodations, and anything we do is covered by her funds, rather than ours."

"Everything you do is just adding to the debt you'll have to pay to buy yourself back!" Scinnari almost shouts. A few people notice, but nobody spares anymore than a glance. Presumably the assume it's a generic lovers' spat. Still, you find the unwanted attention embarrassing, and upsetting, and you begin releasing a trickle of dark smoke. While Scinnari rants at you, you draw a cigarette and put it in your mouth, unlit, but to a passing observation, an excuse for the smoke. Scinnari continues oblivious. "You're digging yourself into the same hole this Lydon is! You will owe her for everything she's done for you, and she will claim your actions were paying the 'interest'! You've not only obviated the life-debt she owed you, but now /you/ owe /her/!" Scinnari fumes at you, thankfully quieter.

Ah, there it is, "Anzan's Essentials". Strange. In the shop's windows are bits of material with strange sigils, chests of arcane-looking design, and an array of pendants. There is a small sign in the window that say "Custom work available upon request", thought the place looks an elaborate enough setup that you can't imagine it being too cheap.

Check out the shop I suppose. I wonder if he has anything similar to what we saw in the cultist place... Hmmmm. "Shut up. Shut. Up. I have so far thought of every objection you have. You still disagree on all points that you have a personal stake in it, but you are failing to learn. No, shut /up/." you whisper, as she opens her mouth to respond. She snaps her jaw shut angrily, and you continue. "I do not intend to pay this off. I do not intend to be her pawn. I only have to pay this debt if she survives. No Gold, no debt. I swear," you finish, no longer angry, but still irritated, "You act as if you think I'm a paladin, or damned Silver. "An interesting order. Let me see." the old man says, moving back behind the counter, her opens a book, flipping through it, before replying, "Depends. Two hundred gold pieces for individual rooms, or five hundred for a fair sized single story. Subject to modifications. One hundred fifty each, unless you want something custom or specific. Pendants for your person are twenty five, and for your immediate area, around ten feet, are one hundred. Finally, I believe so." he says, looking up from his book. The problem here is that the devil is feeling insecure. She fears that the gold is going to win our loyalties/affections. She doesn't really understand dragon politics, nor should we expect her to.

She needs a vote of confidence. I suggest we place her in charge with finding a means of permanently neutralizing the gold at a time of our choosing. Poisons, control magics, assassins, it doesn't matter, so long as its swift, sure, and contingent.

I agree, but this doesn't seem like the time to do it. Let the devil chew on her rebuke a little bit, and have us bring it up later as an olive branch to reinvigorate her confidence. I think this could go a long way towards winning her over more completely. Devils are all about the bottom line - progress towards the eventual goal (in this case, using and then discarding our gold rival).

I vote buy enough anti scry devices to conceal our horde (1 floor) and ourself plus a 10ft area amulet. re: putting it on expense, this is excellent, but don't reveal exactly what it is to our backer. Just, "magical trinkets to get us on our footing," if Cygnis asks about it, produce the crossbow/shortsword.

If the wizard produces good work, we can return for an amulet to mask Scinarri's alignment and craft a custom amulet that Cygnis can't resist to serve as the basis for the anti-polymorph enchantment. Asking for all these items at once is a bit like showing up at the grocery store and asking for thirty tons of fertilizer and gasoline plus a pack of matches.

"For you.... One hundred. Correction; Seventy Five. I've been having trouble moving them." Azan says. You debate bargaining, but decide against it; Scinnari might arrive back at any moment.

Scinnari does not return rapidly. "Fine. Can I order a shielded chest, and shielding to the main bedroom of this address?" you ask, writing it down for him. "Billing upon completion."

"Right, I'll show up. Be there." you affirm.

"Of course, Lord! They await! Anything else? Jarrik should leave soon, Guards still watching."

You're thinking next week. You should be thinking next decade.

Re-reading, I don't know why, but I thought you said that... differently. Anyway, by explanation, the 'free time' we think we have this evening would be gained by giving Scinnari that assignment, followed by "Look around, see what you think you can do in preparation to kill Cygnis."

If you prefer, I can re-write that post.

Jerrik needs to be informed about the gold dragon, and that we have a temporary working relationship with it. Eventually we will go to war with it, but only at the time and place of our choosing. We must know before hand whether the town kobolds have any relationship with the gold.

If they do, then we take the opportunity of the meeting to wipe them out. If not, then we can bring them into the fold and begin using them for our long term schemes, to our mutual benefits. It's not befitting that even a lesser draconic race suffer under the yoke of a bunch of hairless apes.

"Do you know of the Gold?" you ask suddenly.

"What? Gold? No. What gold?" Jarrik responds, confused.

"Gold dragon. One of the librarians at the temple is a polymorphed Gold dragon, just as I am a Red. Listen carefully; I want you to figure out if any of the kobolds know her. If they do, we might take my appearance as a chance to clean house." you whisper, giving him instructions quickly, "If you find a group, assemble them separate, or call them out, or something to suitably isolate them. She doesn't know I am a Red and I do not want word getting back to her."

"I- I undestand, Lord! It shall be done!" Jarrik swears. "Is that all, Lord?"

One nice amulet, custom made, gold, with a dragon relief. Appeal to her vanity. Have it enchanted with a protection from polymorphing enchantment cast on it... that prevents ALL polymoprhing, no matter what, on the wearer. Even if it's himself casting it. Complete polymoprhing lockdown.

Bedroom warded, 2x huge warded chest, and the dragon toorc with concealment enchantments on it. Including alignment, scrying, and hopefully a way to conceal she is an outsider. Also an area protection from divination amulet for us.

Maybe also find a second wizard to conceal that it is enchanted? Can it be done? NOBODY KNOWS.

Alright, assuming we're done with Jarrik, we can get this done easy. Not cheap, though.

    500 gold, an exquisite pendant.

Probably want to wait until the we receive our anti-scrying pendant to get it enchanted, if we buy it.

The other stuff we can charge to Cygnis' account.

Anything else, since I'm starting to get a headache from being up too late?

Yeeeeah. You think you can get it done somewhere, but, as mentioned, you probably don't want to do it until you have your anti-scrying device.

Archiving the thread, drop me an email if you have anything else. I'll try and get back to you, or address it in the next thread's OP.

I'm off. Good night. Post here or email me to add/argue/advise/decide.
