You are Bertram Gillivers, Court Alchemist in the service of his Majesty Emperor Lassivar IV. After several months at sea you landed on a lush tropical island, hoping to turn it into a prosperous imperial colony. It turns out that this island is extremely rich with arcane energies, probably due to its proximity to the skyward phenomenon known as the Second Sun. You quickly discovered, however, that you were not alone on this island. Murderous and savage beasts prowl the underbrush, having developed natural ways of utilizing arcane energy for offense or camouflage. In addition, two species of sentient(ish) natives have made contact: tribes of superstitious violent goblinoids that currently regard you somewhere between deities and food, and strange silent dryad-like creatures that seem to do nothing but observe the happenings around them.

    CURRENT STATUS:
    Alchemical Formulae Known:
    -Sunsphere, defensive weapon
    -Dragon's Blood, offensive weapon
    -Smokebomb, defensive/utility
    -Shadowdust, utiliy
    -Arms and Ammunition, Apprentice-level
    -Medicine, Novitiate-level
    OTHER EQUIPMENT:
    -Pepperpot Blunderbuss
    -Eagle Eyes, binocular/magnifying lenses
    -Phosphorescent Glove/Firestarter
    -Armor-plated Robe, Light

After a day of fortifying yourselves on the island and attempting to negotiate with the nearby goblins, you witnessed several large dark shapes flying out of the Second Sun during a period of flaring activity. It was too dark to make out details, but they seemed to settle inland, near the mountain that dominates the center of the island. You made plans to investigate the next day with a contingent of men.

You were also made aware that there may be an assassin among the crew plotting to kill you, as well as at least one government seditionist.

    >hopefully we can get a decent group going this evening, interest seemed waning last night.

You are already awake when Sebastian tentatively knocks on your chamber door. You admit him with a wordless vocalization, jeweler's eye squinted onto your face as you examine the roots of a native plant.
"Good morning, Gillivers," he says as he enters. "Kept a bit of a watch on you last night; didn't see anything out of the ordinary."
"Thank you," you say absently, entranced by what seems to be small crystalline formations in the root structure of the plants. Abruptly, you remember the winged shapes obscuring the stars with their passage, settling under the canopy, and open your mouth to speak as the lens pops free from your eye.
"There's been no sign of anything out of the ordinary," Sebastian answers your question pre-emptively. "But I've selected six men willing to accompany us inland. Do you think that will be enough?"

"Are you sure those six are loyal? Could you spare any more that you can trust?"
Sebastian seems taken aback by your apparent paranoia. "Eminence, are you...what kind of danger do you think you're in, exactly?"
You frown slightly, murmuring under your breath.
    "Hushblade. Somewhere on the expedition."
Sebastian makes a silent "oh" with his mouth.
    "A real Hushblade assassination?"
True assassinations are rare in the generally stable Imperium; work attributed to Hushblades usually took the form of blackmail, intimidation, or other more subtle works. The taking of a life is rare, and represents a significant fuck-up on someone's part.
"Apparently," you rejoinder. "I have no idea who it might be."
"Well...I've had no reason to distrust any of these men, and I',m sure I could drum up a pair more that I could vouch for."

Soon the eight of you stand on the shore. Sebastian has brought along both Porom and Bartleby, the only other soldiers whose names you know. The soldiers seem uneasy; no doubt wild rumors of what lies on the interior have spread among the men.
"Sir, is it true? Dragons have landed near the mountain?"
"We don't know yet," Sebastian says. "But we;re going to find out, and we're going to be careful about it."

Loaded up on alchemical supplies and with several lengths of rope among you, you set off into the underbrush. Dogging your group, you can see goblins darting about in the bushes behind and around you, drawn curiously to your band. You roughly backtrack the path you took to get out of the interior, wading through the bushes. Occasionally you spot the blurry shape of a camouflaged beast, but your number are large enough to ward off beast attacks.

Several hours later, miles into the jungle, you are no closer to discovering the landing site of the shapes or beasts you saw, though the mountain peak looms promisingly, dominating the horizon. The men are tired and damp, and the crowd of goblins around you is disconcertingly large. They seem to be egging you on into the deeper jungle.

You make your way swiftly through the trees, taking a roundabout path to try and lose sight of any that might be pursuing. With a rush of wind, however, a great black shape darkens the sky overhead.
Superficially it resembles a sailing ship, but with elegant-looking wings pulsing gently and catching the breeze. The entire construct is crisscrossed with blue veins of wisp energy; this entire ship must be powered by magic, a possibility that astounds and excites you even as you throw yourself behind a tree, terrified.
"You! You there!" a strange voice calls out to you. Looking over, you can see a pair of armored humanoids standing in the mouth of one of the many shallow caves dotting the island's inland. They seem to be beckoning to you.

"What should we do, sir?" Sebastian says, eying the figures uneasily. You can hear the hiss of those burning beams being released behind you.
"To the Abyss with it," you growl, keeping your head down and dashing towards the cave, with your bodyguard in pursuit. Behind you, you can hear one of the surviving soldiers being perforated with enemy fire. It is clear that you are hopelessly outmatched technologically. You wonder if their firearms too are magically powered.

Once inside the cave, the two of you slump against the far wall, panting for breath. Several of your hairtips are singed and currently smoldering, and you put them out with the pat of your gloved hands.
"We didn't think any of you had seen us coming in," one of them says, voice muffled by his helmet. They speak the common tongue with a very strange, heavy accent. These two appear to be unarmed.

There also seems to be some confusion about your firearm. The custom blunderbuss is easier to load than the other soldiers' muzzle-loaded firearms, but it is still a single-shot firearm not suited to semi-automatic fire.

"Who -are- you?" You wonder aloud as one of the others waves a hand over the inside of the cave. The walls part like a door, revealing a descending tunnel lined with a spiral of glowing wisp-veins.
"I understand your confusion, and we appreciate your trust," one of them says slowly and evenly in a feminine voice. "Please come this way and we'll explain everything."
You and Sebastian exchange glances. He shrugs, and the two of you follow the two into the tunnel. Along the way the two converse with each other in a musical-sounding language completely unlike the Common tongue.

Sebastian nods, his grip tightening on his musket.
The hallway opens up into a subterranean chamber. Where the stone near the surface is occasionally dotted with blue flecks of energy, here entire swaths of runic light are carved out of the stone.
    "Is this...magic?" you ask breathlessly.
The two figures exchange what you assume to be glances.
"Yes, I suppose that is what you would call it," the female says, a hint of laughter in her voice.
"Don't worry about the others," the male says, gesturing to the surface. "They won't think to use these tunnels yet, they're very distracted by your presence on the surface. We came through the Gate because one of the Watchers was destroyed, the Primarchate simply assumed the Trechlan were getting rambunctious again. We followed the military expedition through last night."
"Stop, stop, you're confusing them," the female says. "I'm sure you have a great many questions. While we have a moment, perhaps we can clear some things up for you."

Thanks, we've been quite curious about the goings on of this island. First, what are you and how do you know our language? Second, we came out into these woods to follow some strange flying creatures we believed to be dragons that passed over the sun yesterday, you wouldn't happen to know anything about them would you? Third, what are those creatures you call the watchers. We met several of them and were quite perplexed at their function, the little goblins you call the Trechlan seem to fear them greatly and started revering us after we moved the corpse of one back to the others of it's kind.

"My my, so inquisitive," the female says, reaching up to remove her helmet. The male does the same.
They appear basically human, except that they are far more slender around the face, with very pronounced cheek and jawbones. Their ears must have been slotted into the streamlined extensions on their helmets, for they are at least six inches long and end in soft points. The female's left eye is a solid blue orb, but other than that these physical discrepancies they appear normal. The female points straight upwards through the ceiling.
"We come from beyond that tear in your sky; another world altogether," she states slowly. "As you have probably noticed, the abundance of what you call wisp energy has gifted us with superior technology and capabilities. However, a...terrible accident tore open this rift between our worlds, and our magical saturation began seeping through the gap, like a sort of osmosis. This is the source of the wisps that power the pseudomagic you call alchemy. However, this power comes to your world at the expense of ours, and our civilization is slowly dwindling."

"Several of the higher-ups within our government decided that your world would be best conquered pre-emptively, before the two worlds reached a magical equilibrium. However, the ruthless slaughter of your people did not sit well with all of us. Birand and I are part of a seditionist movement within the Primarchate; we, and they, have cells of individuals integrated into your society; it is through their intelligence gathering that we learned your tongue, and learned what the military did not know: that your Imperium had sent a human voyage to this island."
"This island is a key, and a test. It is the engine by which a large-scale invasion of your world will be facilitated, and it is also a test, to see if our technology and biology could exist permanently beyond the Rift. The Watchers are biological constructs designed to oversee all aspects of this island and to report to us through the central hub. The Trechlan are domesticated as slaves in our world, but here several generations on their own have rendered them almost feral. One of the only bits of conditioning they still hold, most of the time at least, is that the Watchers are not to be harassed. This, combined with our physical similarities, would explain why they treated you as they did."
From above there is a thunderous boom. The two look somewhat forlorn.
"Unfortunately it does not seem likely that your compatriots will survive. We have had time to examine your technology, and while it is impressive that you have done what you have, given your paltry magical concentration, it pales in comparison with our own."

"There will be no entrenched insurgency unless something is done. When this island is activated, and now that they know you have come this far, that will be soon, the Rift will be spread to encompass the whole of our planar barrier. Our two worlds will be inseparable. Your unknowing civilization will find a thousand thousand ships bearing down on it from the sky. However, if you could get back to your Empire, and convince them of the threat, you could have the forewarning needed to properly entrench yourselves."
"Can't you get us any of your technology? To help us fight?"
"Our devices require a steady influx of magical energy. It would take all of your alchemists to operate one of our shipboard cannons. You will be more able to make use of our sort of technology, and we less so, once the planar overlay forces an equilibrium."

"What, exactly, does your seditionist organization plan to do? Will you attempt to move against your government?"
"We already are," the female says. "There are shamefully few of us who have a problem with genociding your whole race. You have developed with such a curious lack of magic, even I found it hard to believe you were as sentient as initial reports claimed. But those of us who would stand against our own kind are willing to take...extreme measures to ensure that this plan fails."

"According to the Ministry of Viziers, it was an attempt at creating a nearly limitless concentration of energy, a nexus that we could use to draw power from our world's burning core, energy that would usher in an age of limitless potential. Whether or not that is true is immaterial; whatever they were trying to do failed, and the catastrophe resulted in the Rift in our sky and in yours. It is apparently fairly easy to accidentally tear a hole between worlds. Sealing one up on purpose is...more difficult."

Their identities will be made known to you eventually, I'm sure, but for now, let some secrets remain between us. 'Twould be safer for us both. "Yes. Yes! If we can rescue even some of the crew, we have to try!"
Sebastian hefts his musket, grinning broadly.
"Abyss, but why not? It can't go worse than the rest of today has."
The two exchange words in their native tongue; they seem impressed, or maybe just amused.
"Your compassion for others of your species is remarkable, especially given your careless and widespread reproductive tendencies," the girl muses. "Oh...I'm sorry, that must have sounded so offensive..."
Briefly you wonder if fauna have ever been offended by your observational notes.

The tunnels beneath the island are indeed spacious and winding, a honeycomb labyrinth interspersed with naturalistic-looking emplacements of obvious high technology. You quickly lose all sense of direction, but the two...elves? faeries? Space Devils? seem to know the way. At several points they have to use their innate powers, or perhaps they are derived from their armor, to open hidden gateways set into the hallways. This entire island must have been painstakingly altered, or even constructed from the ground up.

It is raining heavily when you finally slide open a doorway to reveal a shallow cave mouth. You are east of the beach, you think; you can see the winding stream nearby that has been providing drinking water. The two elves draw long, thin blades.
"Unfortunately we were not able to procure Daemons for this excursion," the male says regretfully. "I believe many of your fellows have already felt their teeth."
After a short walk you can see the beach, the ship, the smoldering embers of a campfire, and into the jungle, the lancing beams of Daemons taking lives.

We'll go. The question is if we take an elf/etc with a blade, or Sebastion. Will our less able firearms penetrate their armor, or only the swords? If the latter, we take an elf/etc. We'll lob some Sunspheres and smokebombs behind and to the left of the main body of the OpFor, and scoot forward invisibly while they're doing that.

Alternatively, we invisible up the elves/etc, and go forward ourselves visibly while they slice 'n dice unseen from the rear. Again with the distraction devices lobbed, of course.

OR, and we need to find this out, will the elves be immediately recognized as not with the OpFor? If they can pass off as friends, they can commandeer a Daemon or several from OpFor troops by approaching openly and stabbing. In which case Sebastion and ourselves would go invis.

WE NEED MORE INFO. ELVES/ETC, TELL US MORE.

The two seem absolutely flabbergasted that they have been given anything that could pass for an order.
"I...I suppose that is a good point," Birand says slowly. "Fierna and I will stay back near the shore. Though if worst comes to worst we are ready to take our lives. They will believe us to be working alone, or at least they will have no proof."

You coat Sebastian and yourself with the Shadowdust as you move towards the beach. You become like unto moving shadows, hazily transparent and blurry at the edges. You can hear sounds of combat all around you, and it doesn't sound like things are going well.
Nearer to the beach you come into a small clearing. A pair of the centaur-like crab beasts are menacing one of the elven soldiers. Nearby, one of the crew lies face down on the ground. You cannot tell if he is alive.

You silently motion to Sebastian to follow before slowly creeping up behind the elf as he puts a beam of light through one of the crab beasts. Sebastian catches on, and as the elf is distracted by the other beast roaring at it, he slams the butt of his musket into the side of one of the elf's knees. It drops to its good knee, putting its head directly in the level of your blunderbuss. Six or seven quick concussive blasts tear through even its tough armor, as well as a fragile flesh within, and it falls to the ground. Sebastian puts his musket shot through the remaining crab beast, and you savor how well that went.

Kneeling down, you examine the body of the crewman. His chest is riddled with terrible burns. He doesn't appear to be breathing.

And I meant have whichever elf drives us home in the shuttle explain what they told us to the Emperor in person before leaving, using the shuttle, lightguns, etc. as proof.

You heft the Daemon rifle. It is heavy, and hums with wretched power. You think you grasp how the trigger mechanism works, a simple grasping handle and switch. You also remove the elf's gauntlet, tucking it into your belt with some difficulty. It will make for useful study later.

You move off into the underbrush after Sebastian reloads his musket. You stop behind several trees as a large contingent of elves runs past, headed inland. All around you, goblins are scattering through the bushes, too curious to hide, but too panicked to do anything but dash about uselessly.
You reach the beach and shove the rowboat into the water, rowing it swiftly to the main ship. Once aboard, you dash to your cabin, filling as many belt-pouches and satchels as you can, and trying to compile handfuls of notes scribbled on various loose sheets, cursing your lack of crisp organization.

You shut the cabin door behind you and race up on deck...

"Do either of you know how to shoot?"
Hapsburg nods tentatively. "That is, your Eminence, I've shot a gun before, but I've no formal training."
You take Sebastian's musket, handing him the Daemon.
"Here," you say, thrusting the musket into Hapsburg's arms. "Where are the others? Where is Captain Speer?"
    Thessilis gestures towards the shore.
"He took the rest of the soldiers ashore to try and find your party when you didn't return all day. He met those murderers along the way. He's probably dead, and everyone else with him," the cabin boy sniffs loudly and swallows hard.

Several fires have started in the jungle. By their light you can see goblins skittering about, climbing up and down trees. Farther into the jungle you can see the advance of the main portion of the military force, probably four dozen strong all told. Minus at least one, you think with grim satisfaction.

Your GMing is at its usual quality, especially considering the plethora of subpar player suggestions in a large section of the thread. I'm not the most fond of the rapid change in direction to fighting supertech elves, but I suspect it will all be fine; I've seen it done poorly and this at least was them having a magic advantage more than a purely technical one. And it was based on stuff we saw in previous threads, no looses ends there.

I note that you've created another quest with an internal countdown to completion.

    Honestly. Meh.
It's like if you were watching the movie "the ghost in the darkness" and after the lions are established the story suddenly becomes about the local Bigfoot analog playing the xylophone. I was hoping for a slow reveal of the mysteries of the island and what was going on there, with political intrigue with the homeland playing a role in the story (and maybe later on shifting to mostly politicking when we return to the mainland). But instead I got "check out the island, cool right? So there are these goblins and dryads and and assassin, and anti government agents, and fucking nutso monsters and magic, magic every where! Now BAM! extra dimensional space invasion... oh oh oh... by elves! and they have like laser guns! and the second sun is like a portal thing! and, and, and, ABORTED ARCS, ABORTED ARCS EVERY WHERE.
