This game is apparently based on a collection of British movie tropes about girls' boarding schools from the 1950s- 1970s. It doesn't have to be as NC-17 as the cover suggests, and is actually a pretty fun system of backstabbing, one-upsmanship, and outright violence.

    Apprentice

This is a heart-rending look at the lives of children forced to apprentice to cruel and powerful wizards.

The game works well with only one player, and if there are multiple players, each is probably apprenticed to a different magic-user, and their paths rarely intersect. It's primarily about going it alone in the rough world.

    Sounds interesting:
"The time is now. The world has changed.

The Event brought the Sea of Leaves into our world, an immense forest that choked cities and drowned civilisation overnight. From the trees came the Call, a lure to the weak that decimated the population. In the aftermath only pockets of humanity remain, resisting the woods’ siren song. In the endless forests lurk the Lost – whose wills were drowned by the Call – and the Wild, who have forgotten they were ever human.

You are one of a select few who can resist the Call. A Drifter, hardened to the lure of the woods by the scars of the past, you cannot let go. Your torment shields you, but drives your isolation. More than anything you crave welcome in a community, but can never be truly accepted without leaving behind your past. To do that, you must confront and defeat the demons that haunt you."

Every time I hear of cats seeing the extradimensional, I think of that one story, where there was a walled off section of the basement, and the cat always hissed at it. Then one day in front of the owner the cat started flying, convulsing, and made a scratching sound from its talkbox that was essentially telling the owner to get out of the house. Then the cat fell down and the owner moved to a different house.

    In a Wicked Age

This game is designed to be played as a one-shot. A deck of cards is used to determine characteristics of the setting and the characters involved in it, and then the players decide which character they will play. The GM controls the others. You have six dice of varying sizes in categories like "For Myself" and "With Violence". Very heady narrativist stuff.

Or something like that. It's what I'm doing.

I have read the book. It sounds interesting, but I think I would find it boring if I ever played it. But that's something personal, since I prefer my RPGs to have dice rolls.

Read a lot, play a lot. And basically, grab parts of other games that you find interesting, try to make everything coherent and keep on refining, testing and editing until you get something acceptable.

It's not necessary to TRY TO REINVENT RPGs. Just do something that you find fun.

    Totem

Totem is a pretty neat game, where you play Ice Age Cro-Mags in a low-magic Stone Age setting. The mechanic is interesting, because you're supposed to draw stones out of a bag that has two colors of stones. Sunstones are good, Earthstones are bad. The difficulty of a task is rated by how many Sunstones you must draw out at once to succeed. Very cool if you want to play a 10,000 BC-type game. Optionally, you can skip the stones and just use dice to simulate the probabilities of drawing certain stones.

    Lesser Shades of Evil.

The setting is pretty complicated, but the basic jist of it is that this guys figured out how to go post-human and leave the physical body behind. He shared this discovery with his family, and they all became immortal. They then manipulated world leaders into wiping out the human race, and recreated it in their image. Through carefully selected henchmen, they then maintained control over the destiny of mankind.

A few of the immortals rebelled, there was a civil war, and the rebels won out. They're now free to do as they wish.

Basically, it's post-human fantasy with lots of neat shit going on. Way too much for me to bother with explaining it all, but it's a game I can definitely recommend.

I have never played the game from this book, but I have played the Thundarr the Barbarian game that uses OtE, and it is amazingly fun. It's a great system for when you want to play a game based on a movie or other "theme". I could see it working well for an Inception game. The rules are a few steps up from RISUS in complexity, but it only takes a few minutes to sketch out a character.

This is a cute little game based on the (fictional) cartoon show of the same name. It's interesting because the players take turns controlling the "main hero" (Rob Bot) and his stalwart sidekicks. One person is the GM for the entire game, but the GM is determined by everyone giving a summary of how *their* episode would start, and the players all voting on which one is the most awesome.

Fixed it for you. As long as you don't undestand it, you might hope there's a cool game hidden inside. In reality it's pure metaplot-wankery (aka even the GM is kept in the dark about the setting), with "playable" fractions so totally extreme enemies, you either play a totally homogenous group or begin every session with a new party.

On top of that, the first edition had a system that gave you so laughly underpowered characters, your fraction become your only "power source"...

A game about playing witches at a magical academy in the modern age. As a bonus it can be pretty easily altered to run any kind of "Magical School" scenario you want. A fair number of typos in the book kinda ruins the enjoyment, but still worth taking a look at if its your thing.

    >>12127101 Seriously, did you even read the book?
Ok, I might have exaggerated a little bit in my original post, but yes I owend and played the first edition (even got a print of the first limited edition). I knew the game since before it got it make-up remade and it was basically "Fallout-europe".

Playing the game after it's remade makeup, even playing the few fractions that could get along pretty ok, there was always a player afraid of loosing his only power source (fraction/tribe) by gettin along, to well with the others... clusterfuck ensured...

Combine this with the first book just being a setup for metaplot without enough meat to play with the presented conflicts (Just for example the books states that the degenesis-africans are trying to get a foot into spain to invade europe. Playing either fraction-do you get a clue how hard or easy this will be? In the end it's pure handwavium. The posthumans "vs." the normal humans? Wait for the metaplot. The proposed coming of the "messiah" of the apocalipticans? Wait for the metaplot...).

In Hindsight I still consider the first edition of the game a total waste of money and time.

    >>12126771 My good Sir, I think you might have the first edition in mind.

Absolutely. Didn't really belive they would change the setting for the second edition (I thought the change was was mostly about the shitty system). That might earn the game a second chance.

This is more 'scientific romance' than 'steampunk', as the game was written for Verne- or pulp-themed adventures, but the rules are simple enough that it could be used for just about any steampunk setting.

    Cold City and Hot War

World War II happens much as in our history, but the Nazi obsession with the occult and science bore strange and twisted fruit: the reanimated dead, extra-dimensional portals and the things which came through and altered humans. In Cold City, the players are members of the Reserve Police Agency, an international task force set up to deal with the remnants of Twisted Technology. In Hot War, the players are members of the Special Situations Group, set up by the remnants of the British government to deal with unusual situations in post-apocalyptic London after the Cuban Missile Crisis starts a shooting war in which Twisted Technology was deployed on both sides.

Both games' systems are quite similar, but different. They're dead simple, with some rather interesting Trust mechanics. You can get bonuses when working together if you trust the other characters, but when different agendas come into play, those trust bonuses can get turned against you. Each character has personal and factional agendas, either from their different countries in Cold City, or from different branches of government and society in Hot War.

An awesome mix of Call of Cthulhu, Paranoia, the Third Man, Quatermass and STALKER.

    JAGS: Wonderland.

Awesome setting, shitty system. Convert it to your favourite generic system, which is easy since the system it uses is generic to begin with. Perhaps the single greatest horror setting in existence. Basically, you've been inflicted by a new mental illness psychiatrists won't acknowledge. You think you're descending to another layer of existence, to a place known as Wonderland.

Only, it's not in your head. Wonderland is real, and it's alive. It infects people and uses them to infect others. Wonderland is coming, and it wants to drag us all down into it.

    Reality is an illusion.
Those who seek to understand it corrode their understanding of it. In naïveté,
objects are solid, ideas are true or false, sensations are real, and
communication conveys information. To the adept, these things are as fading
    dreams.
There is no object that is not also emptiness.
There is no arbiter of truth.
Sensations are the lies of Maya; they are the shifting of electrical patterns in
the brain; they are signifiers without referent.
    Communication is violence.
    Reality is false.
It does not matter how many layers one peels back. It does not matter what
revelations one has. This is because there is no truth.
We are things that we have dreamed, and there is no sense in it, and when the
sleeper wakes we shall be washed away.

I have no idea where I found this, but ever since I've always been fascinated with the idea of a RPG that fit on a single page, ideally as some kind of character sheet that had the rules for your numbers posted right next to where you wrote the numbers down in the first place.

Anyway, here's Drunken Bear Fighter, the RPG.

The Moscow Underground is menaced by drunken (and occasionally criminal) bears. It is your job to stop them.

And now for a /tg/ exclusive:

There is a place outside of normal existence called the Silhouette Rouge, a place where the conscious and subconscious merge, where the real and unreal are one in the same. The Sarcophagi, creatures lacking memory and identity, are imprisoned within this place. They walk the Silhouette Rouge hoping to divine its secrets for only revelation and enlightenment can grant them release.

Noumenon is a role-playing game of mystery and abstraction. Players assume the roles of the Sarcophagi, strange insect-like creatures trapped within the Silhouette Rouge. During their adventures, players will encounter bizarre entities and explore strange locations. The Silhouette Rouge, Noumenon's setting, is detailed enough to spark the imagination yet open enough to allow customization. In Noumenon, player cooperation is key. Noumenon uses a domino-based task resolution system that enables players to build upon each other's successes.

Transcendence or damnation? The Silhouette Rouge beckons.

Yes, I agree. This is a great thread, and arguing what furry means is entirely pointless. There are furry haters who like TMNT and Duck Tails, and there are furries who swear that those are just as furry as a Doug Winger comic. Neither side will agree with the other, and the entire thread will eventually autosage because a bunch of trolls trying to troll other trolls will get into a furry flamewar.

Let's all just relax and circlejerk eachother over some good obscure RPG systems, and pretend like the word 'furry' doesn't exist for the rest of the thread, shall we?

Yes, words have meaning, but arguing that meaning here is poinless and will end up in far more than the... what is this, like the 10th post in here about furries? People here are NOT going to agree on the definition, NO MATTER WHO IS RIGHT. Arguing the definition of furries should be in a 'Let's argue the definition of furries' thread, and not a 'Hey, let's post obscure RPG systems we like' thread.

So let's not have a pointless argument here, and let's ALSO not have a pointless argument over whether this or that actually are pointless arguments.

    Panty Explosion.
It's sort of like Call of Cthulhu crossed with a schoolgirl anime. From the actual PDF:

    What is Panty Explosion?
Panty Explosion is an adventure game about Psychic and mundane Japanese schoolgirls battling nightmarish demons, ghost, government agents and often each other. It’s also a game about enduring high school, making friends, besting rivals, achieving goals and having fun in modern Japan.

In Panty Explosion you and your friends take the role of Japanese High School girls. At least one of you will have Psychic powers. As a group you will create a story about how your Students survived and triumphed against the adversity of otherworldly demons, shadowy agents and the Japanese educational system. Read the rules on the following pages to discover how to create a Student and play the game.

If I'm not mistaken, an olden edition than the one pictured is on /rs/

The Secret of Zir'An. It's a bit like Ebberon, where magic replaces technology in a pulp setting. Rune magic for utility, using the power left by the gods. Shadow magic for being a ninja, basically.

The gods have left, and each race is a successive failure on their part. Elves who were coddled and immortal. Dwarves no longer sheltered beneath the earth. Humans, given no expectations. Idiot savant giants. Dark-fey beastmen (not really planned for).

Magic only replaces technology in certain parts of the world--the most advanced nations have mundane electrical power and a general technology level matching about the mid-1930s (including radio!).

Dawn of Worlds update I just found posted in another thread. As I understand its like playing civilization from the PoV of a god.

It takes more effort to write an RPG than it does to upload it, or even scan it.

So your guilt is misplaced if you feel bad for not rewarding the poster but don't give a shit about not rewarding the author. Buy the ones you like, that way everyone gets rewarded.

Author writes RPG -> Scanner like it, scans it, uploads it -> Other people like it, propagate it -> Leechers download it, like it, buy it -> Author is rewarded with money -> Author writes more, similar games -> Scanner/uploaders are rewarded with more games they like.

Hollow Earth Expedition. A pulp RPG where you venture to the centre of the world where time has stopped. There are dinosaurs, vikings, conquistadors, Neanderthals, monsters and ancient ruins. Also, Nazis, because every pulp game with occult parts to it needs Nazis.

And since I'm a giant Savage Worlds fan as well, I'll share some of my favourite settings with you all.

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GVBPH9V7

50 Fathoms: Pirate fantasy. The world has basically been drowned, leaving only a few islands every here and there. You sail around generally being awesome. Also, dorfs are replaced by crabs, which is sweet.

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6vu1mlkd

Rippers: Victorian England is under siege by the forces of darkness, and only the Rippers, a mysterious organization of adventurers, magic wielders and holy men can oppose them. The Rippers have learned how to take parts of monsters and graft them to their own bodies, giving them an edge against the forces of darkness. Basically League of Extraordinary Gentlemen meets some kind of fucked up surgeon horror story.

Sundered Skies: The world has exploded. All that remains are a few fragments floating around in an endless void lit by a sinister glow that mutates people into raging monsters. Water is rare, metal is even rarer, and the gods walk among mortals.

Hellfrost: Fantasy setting set in a world stuck in a permanent ice age. One year, winter never ended. The world was slowly covered in snow, with only southernmost parts capable of sustaining civilization. Has a distinct viking flavour, and you can ride mammoths, which is kind of awesome.

Sure. MF is fine, it's just that particular upload seems bad - if you look it up on rs search it says:

I was somewhat surprised to see that Houses of the Bloodes uses FATE system. I've been reading about it recently but thought I knew about all the FATE systems that exist.

    It doesn't.
It just uses similar names for certain elements of the system. The system however is quite unique.

I see, the terminology appeared all the same when I skimmed through the rules chapters. Aspects, invokes, compels and tagging. I'll need to put aside some time for a more careful read.

Glad to see this thread is still here.

Seeing it, though, makes me realize what may be RPG's biggest problem: not pirating (you silly), but rather that there is too much awesome/interesting stuff created for a market too small to absorb it.

    Just an idle thought.

As the OP, I would like to thank all the contributors. A special mocking goes to the furry troll who tried to derail the thread and almost succeeded.

Godspeed, good thread. See you in the archives.
