    'Sup /tg/, how's this for a setting?

Each and every human being is born with a deck of trading cards clutched to their chest. All forms of conflict are resolved via card game: war, muggings, arguments, drunken fistfights. If someone tries to rape you, they do it by beating you at cards, at which point you are helpless to avoid their dick unless someone saves you with their own cards.

These card games can even be played to the death, with the loser dying horribly at the end depending on what card was used to defeat them. This is illegal, as are certain "weapons grade" cards that are specifically restricted to government and military personnel.

I've got a bit more, but I figure I'll let you guys give ideas/suggestions/opinions before trotting it out.

    Pic semi-related. It's that cranked to 11.

Also not really, the cards weren't inextricably part of the world, they were just a game that some guys happened to cast spells on occasionally. This is LIKE YGO in that people play card games and take them extremely seriously, but it's intentionally as far over the top as is possible.

What about something like "Your genetic code has a deck encoded on it, people with better genetic code has better decks. The police checks your deck as your genetic identification, and changing the deck means changing your genetic code."
    >> OP 09/15/10(Wed)22:08 No.12104311
    >>12104186

I'd say most people start off with a full, but shitty deck. Maybe a good card here or there. They get better by trading with other people, or doing things that heavily align them with certain a card. IE, if we use MTG as an example, a very angry person would find a lot of Red cards laying around/under their pillow when they wake up/randomly inserted into their deck, thieves and assassins would end up with a lot of Black etc. To someone from our world, it would seem like random chance when people find cards in this way.

I also think it would be pretty cool if there would be a bunch of "WHAT HAS SCIENCE WROUGHT!?!?!!" over people printing new cards. Same technology is used as the real world, but people are horrified and disgusted by it, since it's "unnatural".

    >>12104218

Could do. It takes out some of the mysticism, but adds some great SCIENCE! elements. Either one could work with what I'm going for, though.

Sounds interesting. I'm not sure how I feel about changing your deck changing your DNA though. I like the caste system and such, but it seems like getting a new card changing your character's non-card traits would be a good way to piss of players.

Maybe only have it happen if you make vast, major changes to your deck? Like if you stick with a White Soldier deck your whole life, any changes would be negligible, but if you suddenly decide to go White/Black it completely fucks with your appearance and personality.

Maybe some minor short-term effects if you change a card or two, and some major effects if you change your whole deck?

Screwing too much with an opponent deck or with your deck messes up DNA and someone gets cancer or some genetic disease. Also, milling the deck means that your opponent is losing years to live. I'm liking it OP.
    >> OP 09/15/10(Wed)22:25 No.12104537
Now, one thing I'm not sure about is whether or not I want to design my own card game for the setting, pick an existing one (If this I'd go with MTG most likely) or set it up to be as vague as possible so that players and GM's could pick whatever they want.

I do think most in-game skills will be card related. A player can learn to cheat by secretly drawing two cards instead of one, or doing some shuffling trick or other with the deck. Also, I'd add in a HEART OF THE CARDS mechanic that allows characters who BELIEVE IN THE CARDS to get hilariously specific cards that are perfect for the situation they're in but not many others. Things like that.

Does /tg/ think there should be a skill system for things like climbing/accounting/cooking and various other non-card things, or that such things should all be handwaved or handled with MORE CARDS?
    >> Stran-G-EER 09/15/10(Wed)22:28 No.12104590
    Hmmm, I like this Cardpunk...

I think personally, I'd probably have it be something where at a certain age your DNA is read and you are given a deck based on that. Also, ritualistic gifting and trading among family, and some cards (but not all) survive after you die and are passed on down the family line. These ancestral cards are quite powerful, as you can upgrade cards as you go on.

But that's just the direction I'd take it.

Because Cards are representatives of the soul, vile card players steal their defeated opponents' decks instead of burning them as is proper, effectually stealing their souls. Most people wouldn't even think of taking a fallen enemies' deck, as doing so is the blackest sin imaginable; even thieves and cutthroats shy away from soul-theft because of the damage it wreaks both on the deceased and the man whose soul was stolen. You begin thinking like the fallen, acting like the fallen, acquiring physical features of the dead. If you go too far, you become an insane composite being, damned by the constant chattering of those you've killed.

Marriage ceremonies involve the ritual trading of the single most important card in the deck to represent the sacred commingling of souls.

I could imagine like a fistfight is an actual fistfight with the cards being played determining the actions.. joe's natural brawling deck has things like dodge, block, jab, uppercut, roundhouse, and they're all "played" in the instant that the action is performed, either in a sort of mental card duel the combatants are doing. kinda like their conciousness/souls/DECKSOULS are having a card duel while their bodies are acting it out.

i think this thread is glorious. and might work as an RPG as long as "cards" are played fast and loose in the game. and not like MAGIC THE GATHERING, where EVERY CARD IS DESCRIBED AND ACCOUNTED FOR. you do a punch and one of your "punch/fist attack" cards gets played. or well. you play a punch/fist attack cards and a punch happens. or something...

It's kind of like a feedback loop, then? As your life changes, the cards in your deck change, and as you change the cards in your deck, it changes the path your life takes?

For instance, you buy a few Magical Filing Cabinet because you want to get ahead in your law firm. Suddenly, you find yourself being a bit more organized. Then you duel someone and you draw a card you've never seen before: Everything In Its Place. When you go home, you start to schedule your family's activities down to the minute.

Flash forward a few months, and you're leading a street gang called The Organizers, full of formerly aimless punks who you forcibly converted to The Way Of CONTROL with your cards, which was easy since their decks were just mishmashes of cards they saw on TV.

Didn't anyone here watch Yu-Gi-Oh GX?

... Don't answer that. But in GX they have a tendency to go to the spirit world, where card effects actually play out in reality, and in the dark world end with the loser dying. The inhabitants are all monsters from the cards, and all use decks pretty much themed around themselves, often going as far as to summon copies of themselves (pic related).

This idea reminds me a lot of that stuff, and now I actually want to run some kind of game with this idea by having my players build actual yugioh decks and having them duel gimmicky decks I create for the npcs.

Honestly I'd more say that they use vaguely science-themed cards from whatever game ends up being the primary one in the setting. Having specific games for specific scenarios undermines the Taking A Trading Card Game Entirely Too Seriously theme. Scientific debates decided via Yu-Gi-Oh and screaming would be funnier than scientific debates decided by a science-themed card game.

There exists a cult that believes that the cards do nothing on their own, but merely call on a greater power that exists in a realm beyond comprehension. In their research, they have found what they believe to be a ritual that will either summon the Supreme Judge, or kill it: a specific 23-card game state that is impossible to resolve under the rules. They have already assembled 21 of the cards they need. The 22nd is held miles below the earth, in a secret military complex.
