48 KB Stalker Quest Stalk Out of Here Getter 09/03/10(Fri)20:02 No.11940621
In our last episode, our heroes chose to bum around the bar a bit and hear the local word. Besides finding out that the last blowout resulted in disasterous casualties in a shocking cooperative venture between admittedly radical Freedom and Duty squads, we found out that both the Freedom and Duty clinics have been swamped as a result trying to piece together survivors, taxing local medical supplies in both locations. A bit more listening got us involved at another stalker group's table - they had recently lost their lead figure in a mutant attack while on contract from Duty, and were seriously broken up about it. Our hero gave them a bit of support and encouragement, and they introduced themselves - Pyotr, Limp, and Red - before telling us that they'd pay if we killed a chimera out Dark Valley way and setting out for parts unknown. Purchasing some medical supplies from Barkeep, we headed back out into the world, but not before meeting a shady "information broker" named Snitch who claimed he could give us a leg-up on our bounty hunt for the price of 500 roubles.

Rostok is an important place in the Zone, and we felt it worth some further exploration. We chose to pop in on the other major gathering point - the arena - and lost a small amount of money betting on bloodsport, not wanting to risk participation in such a dangerous affair when our luck has otherwise been pretty solid. Some talking around with local Duty officers got us information; we can't expect to do work for Duty unless they see us as worth trusting - one officer pointed us to the clinic, Barkeep, and the arena mutant and bandit wranglers as potential ways to prove our stuff to the locals and perhaps get some notice. Selling our salvaged guitar strings paid off our lost monies at the arena, and we decided to bed down for the night in the relative safety of the Duty base.

You have their names - Victor, Yuri, Loudmouth, Spaz. You also have their appearances (photos of each one). You know that they were last seen in the swamp west of Cordon, but that a Duty team sweeped the area after they did their double-cross and found them nowhere.

You also know that Snitch claims to know something about them through the rumor grapevine, but no telling if that's true.

Connections-wise, you're comfy with Captain Petrov and his group that operate out of the hangar in the garbage, and on decent terms with Sidorovich, but there's no way of knowing who knows anything.
    >> Anonymous 09/03/10(Fri)20:46 No.11941014
    >>11940951

Oh, right then. So let's instead ask around Rostok for a bit, see if anyone has seen these guys.

    >>11941014
Or we can get ready and head out for the Hanger in Garbage. Either one works, tho.
    >> Stalk Out of Here Getter 09/03/10(Fri)20:58 No.11941125
Getting up early, you and the others opt for a quick breakfast so as to get your day going early. You want to ask around Rostok concerning your hits, and you doubt if it'll be anything but time-consuming.

You quickly find that the Duty soldiers on-base know nothing about them; Barkeep contracted them to escort the mapping team and Duty had simply went with them based on Barkeep's record. You find that, despite knowing little, the local Dutiers are quite upset over having failed to find the murderers and feel frustrated that the base's commanding officers haven't leaned on Barkeep more heavily to see just what might have happened. You can see why Barkeep's so upset, with all of this suspicion in the air.

Most of the local stalkers are similarly useless, only their reaction is more one of indifference than anger: they're not Dutiers, and they find themselves under the guns of bushwackers all too often out in the Zone. One fellow passing through rather uncharitably opines that the factions should simply round all of their flock up, murder each other, and be done with it.

A visit to the arena is more interesting; you're offered a 200 rouble bonus fee for each of the four that you bring in and give to them in good enough condition to be tossed into the arena, "Barkeep will probably pay you just as long as they die eventually," Arnie opines, "he's a straight-shooter, no matter what the locals are grumbling about."

Your first real hint comes from one of the wranglers hanging around the arena - men who work to catch fighters besides Duty's typical captives, "makes no sense for these guys to grease the research team," he comments, "everyone knows predictive anomaly mapping is a boondoggle, and these guys were getting paid by Barkeep regardless of whether or not the team got any useful information. Sure, the corpses were ransacked, but I say there's another angle to this."
    >> Anonymous 09/03/10(Fri)20:58 No.11941128
I say we go to the swamp and try to track where they went. Hopefully they left some kind of trail.

Interesting. We should keep that it mind for later. But considering that we've probably got all that we can from the locals, let's set out for the Hanger.

(Please note - Barkeep does have a radio, so you can chat with Petrov that way, but obviously radio transmissions aren't always secure.)
    >> Anonymous 09/03/10(Fri)21:07 No.11941210
I don't think it would be necessary to talk to Petrov over the radio. It might be good planning, but something tells me we shouldn't. Just drop in, talk to him a bit, then head back out. Maybe we should ask Sid later? You said west of Cordon.

    >>11941326
(Just clarifying, a fluff post will follow)

What happened was this - a group of Duty scientists proposed a research trip into the swamps west of Cordon for the purpose of mapping anomaly movement in a predictive fashion; they believed they had a potential breakthrough. Duty, with most of its manpower in the Zone center, went to Barkeep to get muscle for the job, which he did. During the trip, the escorts turned on the scientists, killed them, robbed them, and fled into the swamp; this was captured by a small digital camera they didn't find.

Duty sent out a squad of trackers first to find the overdue scientists, then the traitors, but failed and had to head back to base to be cycled into other tasks. Barkeep is suspected of potentially double-dealing against Duty, and has put a bounty on the heads of each of the four, which we accepted.

The scientists at Yantar - and Yantar itself - are not (apparently) involved in any way.

    >>11941375
Ah, I assumed "west" meant Yantar, thats what just how I picture the map in my mind. Anyways, I propose we head down that way, maybe speak to Petrov on the way.

    >>11941428

Yeah, let's do this. Ask Barkeep if he has the video, and watch it. Make sure Bird does - he's the magic tracker man.
    >> Anonymous 09/03/10(Fri)21:32 No.11941467
The mercs might of been paid off by someone else to steal the information that the duty scientists had developed...

Barkeep might of sent those mercs with the purpose of stealing the info(if it proved useful) so that he could take it and sell it to someone outside the zone for tons of money? Or maybe the mercs realized this themselves.... oohh the possibilities.
    >> Stalk Out of Here Getter 09/03/10(Fri)21:32 No.11941468
Having exhausted potential information avenues, you turn to your squad for opinions.

"Well, when tracking a beast, you follow its trail as far as you can. No simple thing in a swamp, but I suggest we at least start there," Bird opines.

"There's also the folks back in the hangar - Captain Petrov and his men," Twitch chimes in, "I mean, it sounds like Petrov has guys pretty far-flung in the Zone. Maybe they've seen or heard something."

You agree with your comrades' notions - if you're going to catch these folks, it's going to start south of here.

"Just when we make it to Rostok, we've gotta go back the way we came," Damsel complains good-naturedly.

You're not entirely thrilled yourself, but the hard cash - to say nothing of the reputational boost - will get you one step closer to the center of the Zone.

    You set out.

Retracing your steps feels slightly quicker than taking them to begin with, and it's not long before the tell-tale piles of refuse and abandoned, haunted-looking hulks of vehicles tell you that you're once again in the Garbage; you give the abandoned Duty checkpoint some distance, spotting a herd of flesh - with a couple of boars mixed in - from a way off.

Your off-road wanderings give you a unique opportunity when you spot a group of five men escorting one - the sixth is clearly a prisoner, judging from his tied hands and disheveled appearance. The group is heading east, to what you know to be the Dark Valley, and doing it carefully.
    >> Anonymous 09/03/10(Fri)21:34 No.11941502
    >>11941468

Tell Bird to equip his scope. Use Binoculars to see if we can ID these guys.

We really need like a handset radio or something to talk to Petrov and Barkeep.

    Probably bandits, though.
    >> Anonymous 09/03/10(Fri)21:35 No.11941506
I suggest we investigate this group of six. Also, we should investigate the place where the scientist team was found dead. There, we might find clues to the whereabouts of our marks and, if as a stalker we asked said something is wrong with the situation, we might find some insight.

    Captcha says: chicat inferior
    >> Anonymous 09/03/10(Fri)21:35 No.11941512
Personally, I don't want to do this quest; it means killing STALKERs for Duty, and I don't want to do much for Duty. I think we should ask about the lands east of the Dark Valley, or west of Agroprom.

    >>11941460
(Obviously, this goes before the travelling post chronologically.)

Barkeep complies with your request to see the last moments of the scientists readily - he seems glad that someone is taking his job seriously. Considering his fat is over the fire, you can imagine why.

The video's surprisingly clear for a Zone-recording; a group of three scientists being escorted by four men, as you can see when the scientist turns to scan an area with some unidentified instrument. The video concludes suddenly and brutally - the group had just moved from knee-deep sludgy water to a small "island" when the longcoat-wearing protectors turn in on their wards and gun them down with automatic fire from AKS-74s. The scientist filming falls to the mud, and from then on you see only a patch of dirt and - once - a boot.

You attempt to shadow the group carefully, keeping your distance and observing them through your binoculars and the scope you pass onto Bird for his rifle. You can't make out much - the group is wisely sticking to long grass and keeping a lookout behind them - but your see your chance to finally get a good glance in, though it'll be a risky look.

Consensus seems to be look, so...

You signal to the others to stay down, climbing to a slightly better position; the elusive group is about to move from a stand of grass into the open, and this may be your best chance for a good look.

Crouching down as far as you reasonably can, you peer through your binoculars and see that the man being escorted is wearing a red armband - the group moving him lacks any particular identifying marks, but their ragged top layer of clothing makes them look like snipers or hunters, the sort who lay in ambush for hours.

One of the five guards seems to get a bad feeling, he snaps his head to look in your direction, and you set into motion instantly...

Still, you can make out the sounds of the man shouting to his compatriots, carried to your location on the cool wind; a less advantageous peering shows the men on alert, but still moving - much faster now than before.

You tell the others what they saw, and Bird nods, "their response alone tells me that they're somewhere where they don't belong, but the red band seals it: one of Petrov's men. No wonder they're on alert."

    "Bandits, then," Damsel says; it's a half-question.

You decide to go with Bird's plan - his experience may pay off in this situation. "Bird, Damsel," you say, "when Twitch and I make it there," you gesture to the cover of a pile of rocks and a fallen tree well to the side, "open fire; we'll move up the side and flank 'em."

You instantly set into motion, springing alongside the shorter Twitch for cover; you go unseen, thankfully. At that moment, Damsel and Bird open up on the enemy squad, and you immediately begin to move again; there's no time to lose.

Roll 2d20 to see how good their fire works out.

Bird and Damsel's sudden attack has the element of surprise, even though their targets had been previously spooked. Bird's shot wings one of the men, and he drops immediately, injured but alive. Damsel's fire is less accurate, and she only manages to send bullets wizzing into the air and ground around the formation of enemy men. Nonetheless, the desired effect is achieved; they drop down or into cover - their captive does the same, momentarily forgotten by his accosters. It takes only a split second for the pinned foes to open up, and you run faster when you hear the sound.

Roll 2d20. The first is how well you and Twitch move. The second is for the return fire of your opponents.

Though your crashing movements through the brush and between cover is mostly shielded by the sound of gunfire, one of the pinned foes gets lucky, and both you and Twitch are spotted; to their credit, the enemy squad gets the message and you know they'll be responding any second now. Damsel and Bird, as far as you can tell, are unharmed - they're still firing, and the pinned enemies are still unsure where exactly they are.

Roll 1d20 and make a choice - either stop and open fire now, which is less ideal but gets you into the fight, or keep moving to the better firing position but risk serious punishment coming in.

Twitch's shots fly harmlessly off into the dirt or air, accomplishing little but to keep the enemy's head down; your CS grenade is marginally more effective, though seems to be putting out less teargas than it should be; still, you can sense the enemy's panic.

    Everyone except the lead opponent's.

As if the world were in slow motion, you see his sights glide across you, and you feel a shiver as if an icy hand had grasped your heart. The opponent's aim keeps gliding - distantly, you realize that you're moving quite fast and are actually now half in cover - and falls over Twitch.

The air is rent with a distinct ka-ka-KRACK, and Twitch goes down like a puppet with its strings cut; some part of you sees he's been hit in the chest several times.

You're aware that you're yelling out for your partner even as they begin pouring much more accurate fire on your partners across the way, even as your partners' fire continues to prove useless.

Furiously, you bring your AKS-74U to bear on the enemy, sighting down the barrel and yelling in a mixture of panic and anger.

Roll 1d20 to make these bastards pay. Because you risked yourselves getting to such a good position, you're able to lay down fairly easy fire.

The captive is yelling something, you don't hear and you don't care.

You bolt to where Twich fell, tossing your carbine rudely to the Zone's soil. In a half-instant, your bag is off your shoulder, and in a quarter-instant, you've rolled Twitch over.

    He's alive. Amazingly.

Twitch seems to try focusing on your face, then gives up, staring at some point past you. He spits out a mouthful of blood and speaks. "I think they shot me."

"They didn't get you too bad," you hear yourself speaking as if you were standing over your own shoulder; removing Twitch's vest reveals that it was of little use against the SAW's full-sized rifle rounds, "Hell, Damsel was more dinged up than you," now you're digging in your first aid kid frantically, reaching for painkillers, for bandages, for anything; your hands are shaking as you apply pressure over the wounds to try and stop the bleeding.

You hear familiar voices, but you can't place them. You've got to stop the bleeding, why won't he stop bleeding? A hand falls on your shoulder and in a flash you turn and punch some man in the face before turning to your partner.

    Your friend.

Gradually, the familiar voices resolve into those of Damsel and Bird; the strange one is the hostage's, you can hear him speaking into a handset radio. You sense him again over your shoulder, and he drops an army-grade medical kit in front of you.

    "Use this."

Roll 2d20 to see if you can stabilize Twitch. The army medical kit affords extra help.

At first, things seem hopeless - Twitch won't stop bleeding, and it doesn't take a doctor to recognize a man dying before one's eyes. Bird is down beside you now, checking Twitch's breathing and pulse; helping hold the wounds closed and apply hemostats. You're aware that Damsel is holding a hand over one breast, but you can't see any blood; looks like her armor did her a favor.

    The bleeding appears to slow.

"We have to get him help," Bird says, voice strained, "now."

Between you, Bird, and the hostage, you easily lift Twitch and begin running - or at least, running as fast as you can without making his injuries worse. Slowed bleeding or not, he's dying by the second.

Ahead, you see a squad of red-banded soldiers; you only really recognize them because they're carrying an army litter and shouting for attention. Your party quickly turns Twitch over to them, and the entire group bolts for the hangar; to their credit, the men are running as if all of the Zone's mutants were at their heels.

Roll 2d20 to see how Twitch fares on the way back to the hangar.

Despite their speed, Twitch is dying, rapidly. You know this because a man you assume to be a battlefield medic is shouting it to anyone that will listen as he runs and tries to keep the Zone from claiming another life.

When you arrive at the hangar, Dr. Menkov and a pair of assistants are waiting; gone is the old man's crabby demeanor, he takes Twitch in and immediately gets to work, his face a picture of grim determination as he works to save a life literally teetering on the edge of death.

One of Petrov's men urges your group out of the makeshift "surgical theatre;" you're all too numb to protest.

A hand falls on your shoulder. It's Captain Petrov. You look to him - what could he possibly say? Nothing, and that's what he does, giving you only a curt, respectful nod. In a way, that seems right.

Roll a d20 to see how Twitch does; this roll is necessitated by his rapid decline in condition in transit.

Seconds drag into minutes, and minutes into hours; the hours themselves are indescribable, unendurable. You hear nothing, are told nothing. At one point, one of Petrov's medics leads Damsel off to examine her wound; miraculously, her vest was not penetrated, and she's gained only a tremendous bruise over her left breast to show she was shot at all.

You're seriously considering storming the surgical theatre and damn the consequences when Menkov walks up, his arms covered in blood up to his elbows. and his face limp, though from exhaustion or defeat you cannot tell. Your heart is siezed again in a furious, icy grip.

"I can't believe it, but he's stabilized," Menkov says, "you probably saved his life."

You're given even less hassle than usual by the men guarding Petrov's office. Word about what happened has spread all around the hangar, and you can see Petrov's men looking at your clique with a newfound respect, perhaps even comraderie.

When you enter the captain's office, he gives each of you a nod in turn, "I heard about your comrade, Twitch," he says, "and now you see why I tolerate Menkov," this last is a joke, and the captain's gentle smile shows it.

"Sit, sit; I'm sure you're tired," he turns to face a case behind his desk, then emerges with a bottle and four glasses, "I like to have a celebratory cognac on occasions like this," he pours you each some, and none of you complain, silence filling the room as each of you drinks in turn.

Finally, the captain speaks up, "the man your Twitch so nearly gave up his life for is one Corporal Fyodor Petrovich Sokolov, a scout of mine. He was shadowing a group of bandit robber-murderers who he had picked up on crossing through the Garbage. According to his reports, he followed them to and from one of the main agroprom facilities; this confirms your suspicion that some third party is doing business with anyone and everyone, with artifacts a primary interest. It appears they've set themselves up as a bandit gang as well, but according to Corporal Sokolov, they behave like anything but," he pours you each another glass before moving on, "these men were on their way back to the Dark Valley when they detected Corporal Sokolov, ambushed, and overpowered him. Since you saved the Corporal's life, I thought you deserved to benefit from his findings. It's clear to me that some party is making a serious effort to acquire artifacts from all corners, in search of god-knows-what. That wouldn't be unusual, but the pains they've gone to disguise themselves is obviously troubling."

You're given a moment to mull that over.

"Naturally, I will be investigating this matter further. As for Twitch, you needn't worry about medical costs - you saved the lives of one of my men, and I'm proud to help save the lives of one of yours."

Thanking Petrov for information freely given, you let him in on why you were originally coming down this way; the photos are in your bag, but one of the sentries brings it in when the captain barks out an order.

Petrov examines the photos for a long while, and even watches the copy of the cam footage you received. After a while, he merely shakes his head, "these men are no one I know, but I can spot some things out for you. No identifying marks. No scars. Brown or black hair, brown or blue eyes. Not even a weird beard among them. It's possible these men were specifically selected for their rather anonymous appearances," he pauses, "of course, that may just be grasping at straws."

"They robbed the scientific team that they murdered," Bird brings up, "would you happen to have gotten any unusual equipment sales lately? Heard of any?"

The captain is shaking his head again, "No. Though, if they were trying to keep their heads low, they'd probably sell to bandits, or perhaps even our friends in the agroprom. Criminal elements appreciate discretion in a merchant, since it's damn rare." Changing subjects, Petrov leaves mentions that his men have raked in the gear from the bandit squad, and that you're free to take your pick; you did the work.

All of that gives you something to think about, and you excuse yourselves from the captain after some further pleasantries to discuss your course of action.

"We can't leave Twitch," Damsel sounds adamant.

"We can, however, examine these mens' belongings," Bird says, "it's possible we'll find something they didn't."

It turns out, in the end, you made a pretty good haul.

Bird lets out an appreciative whistle as he examines the gear, "we're lucky we had the element of surprise."

Poking though the equipment, you find a curious device - it looks like a detector of some kind, but more modern. Some sort of logo on its side has been sanded rudely off, "one of these things is not like the other," you look strangely at Bird, and he looks back at you seriously before the three of you burst into nervous laughter.

Frankly, you need the money, and while you'd like to be generous with Petrov's men, he's right - you DID do the work. You keep one magazine of 5.45 for yourself, with the other 9 to be distributed amongst your teammates. The military flak jacket is an obvious grab, as is the unusual detector. You take two of the better-condition AKS-74s for your two AKS-74Us, leaving your entire team with a "real" rifle to fall back on.

Satisfied, you move to Fix-It to fob off the leftovers on Petrov's men. The tech gives them a cursory look-over, then makes an offer, "I can give 3,000 roubles all told."
    >> Sgt. Varn 09/04/10(Sat)01:02 No.11943980
A way to test the detector would be to set out our Jellyfish, move away a good bit, and then slowly get near it with both detectors out and see which one picks it up first and how clear the return is.

You decide to accept Fix-It's offer, "Done deal, friend. Hope they do you guys well."

"Well, who can't use more guns?" Fix-It says good-naturedly, and you bid him - hopefully temporary - farewell.

Walking back towards the hangar proper, you get an idea on how to test your new detector; having Bird move off with your artifact, you switch each on; it quickly becomes clear that the "new" one has dramatically higher range and accuracy than your older one.

"It's just that, up until now, we've done pretty well here. I mean, sure, we've all of us almost died once or twice, but this was...different. This was like being on the outside again."

"Before I came to the Zone, I was used to this sort of thing. It was a part of the crowd I ran with, and a part of prison. I thought I'd left that behind, I guess."

"You guys want to talk about it, or would you rather I did?"

Your joke falls a little flat with the others, but nonetheless, Bird speaks up, "back in the day, when I used to be...ah, younger and more enthusiastic...I lost my share of companions in the Zone. The first time's the worst - with me, it was a friend I'm made back in the Cordon. We hit it off sneaking over the border, and we stuck together from there. Military got him," he pauses, "better than a mutant, anyway."

"With me," Damsel says, "it was political violence. I was young and stupid and thought I could make a difference. I don't like to think about it."

With that said, things turn to less serious talk, and then back to silence. Which, inevitably, leads to sleep.

It's late morning when you all finally awaken - breakfast is short, but it improves your tempers; that, and word from Menkov that Twitch is doing well.

"Now that we've got a day ahead of us," you put forward, "let's give the site a look."

"No point sitting around," Bird agrees, and you're off.

The site of the battle is oddly peaceful; a careful approach reveals no danger, human or otherwise. It becomes apparent when you arrive at the site where Twitch so nearly lost his life that the mutants found the corpses; most are mauled, one is missing. None are carrying anything valuable, and using Petrov's tattoo trick reveals nothing you understand.

Damsel pokes one of the dead bandit's legs with the toe of her boot, "Now what?"

With not much else to do, you break out your detector; perhaps it can find something that your eyes can't.

A few minutes fiddling at the device brings you a surprise - the detector has indeed found something...through the long grass ahead. Looking to the others, you carefully move in on the signal; it leads you to a junk pile with what appears to be the remnants of a air duct leading somewhere "inside." Even from here, you can feel the heat baking out, and your geiger counter gives several restless ticks.

"I can think of a way to make that surprise even better," you say, safely bagging the thing.

It takes a while to track down a boar after explaining your intent to Bird and Damsel, but when you find one, the "battle" is anticlimactic. Bird expertly drops the dim-witted mutant with a burst from his rifle.

Getting it back to the hangar is a another story.

"I wish...you idiots...thought this shit through," Damsel gasps as you make the last few steps inside the hangar's defensive walls and drop the dead animal unceremoniously, "Coulda...saved us the effort...with a cart!"

As far as you're concerned, it'll be worth the inconvenience. Ignoring the curious looks of the posted guards, you move back into the hangar, tracking down Menkov at his office. The man looks up, unsurprised to see you.

"If you're here to ask about visiting hours, they're from never to not-going-to-happen," he says, returning his gaze to a book.

"Actually," Bird says, "We might be able to help you."

You show the doctor the artifact in your backpack, and he recoils, "get that thing away from me! Do you want to give me ANOTHER cancer?" You obey readily enough.

"Where did you FIND that thing?" he asks, genuinely curious.

"In a pile of garbage, just waiting to be picked."

The doctor pauses, "Interesting. Even in the early days, powerful artifacts this far from the center were rare," he takes your bag without asking, shouldering it with a grunt, "with this thing and your Jellyfish, we can speed up your friend's recovery from months to about three days of intense exposure. We'll have to keep him on a regimen of drugs to protect against whole body irradiation and secondary infection, but we had to do the latter, anyway," he looks to you, "on your go-ahead, I'll use this. But there are, of course, risks in using such an artifact."

"What risks?" you ask; you don't want to gamble with your friend's life.

"Well, radiation poisoning, for starters," the doctor says, "the drugs we use are still not all that great at treating significant exposure, and radiation does significant damage to various bodily systems. Obviously, there's a risk of cancer, as well, and I don't mean from just the radiation," he's going into lecture-mode, drawing himself up, "some former colleagues of mine did a series of studies on lab rats where they were greviously injured and healed using either a Flame artifact or natural recovery. There was a statistically significant, though small, increase in tumorous growths in the artifact-exposed, both cancerous and benign."

We have a jellyfish. And 3000 rubles to blow. Can't use those?

"Against radiation poisoning, yes. Against the potential increase in tumors? No. We've actually lent out our anti-radiation artifacts to the Duty and Freedom clinics northward to help treat their sick stalkers, but we're due them back either at request or soonest convenience."

i wonder if we can rent another jellyfish....

Jellyfish doesn't quite cover the rad output of the artifact, and artifacts are less common in this quest (as players have probably noticed).

I think we should talk to Twitch about this before we decide for him...
he's not critical any more, so at this point we'd just be saving a few months of rest time for him, which I'm sure the good captain would let him spend in the hangar

yeah, but we can still check around.

Might as well. Twitch is our bud. We owe him.

You're not sure how to decide, and thinking about it, it's not really your decision, "let us ask Twitch," you say, "it's his body."

Menkov gives it a moment's thought, then softens, "Very well. But ask your question and be off, he needs his rest."

Admitted into Twitch's room, he frankly doesn't look much better than when you brought him in. Between the bandages, the pale pallor of his skin, and the ancient medical equipment, you almost wish you'd stayed outside. Almost.

Twitch looks at you groggily, then manages a smile, "So I guess I wasn't hit that bad after all," he says.

You return the gesture, "Hell, if I thought you'd be doing so well, I would've hoofed it a bit slower, I've got this strain in my ankle-"

Twitch laughs, and for that you're relieved.

"What your friend is actually here to ask," Menkov interrupts, "is if you want to undergo artifact exposure treatment. Our selection of medical artifacts here is poor and most are out 'on loan' as it were, but your comrades have found a rather remarkable example to go along with their radiation-nullifying Jellyfish."

"What kind of difference will it make?"

"From months and possible permanent damage to days and no typical permanent damage."

    Twitch swallows, "and the catch?"

"Radiation exposure, potential poisoning. A regimen of powerful, unpleasant drugs. An increased risk of cancer and tumerous growths even if radiation exposure is nullified or controlled."

Twitch pauses to consider before speaking again, "and if I stay here, I've got months in bed-"

"Three to six, possibly more," Menkov supplies.

"-risk of infection, and risk of permanent injury."

He looks from the doctor to you, "Well, I told you I had a thing about gambling. I'm fine with it if you are."

(It's the player's call, but yes, there is some risk of injury, though slim.)

Let's go for it. Artifact him.

The less time he spends in that bed, the better. Once we're done here, let's go to Yantar and find out if they can synthesize cleaning agents from FruitPunch upwellings. Menkov would appreciate it, and so would everyone else.
