The procedures go well, without a hitch, though it takes a bit longer for the adults, since they're farther along in stages. Korus spends the majority of his time in the medical station, watching the ancient machines return the three subjects to 'normal'. Whether he's particularly interested in the girl, you don't know, but it would be nice for him to have a companion besides yourself. In six days, the patients are all released from the chambers, ahead of schedule. Preliminary scans confirm that the adults will need a follow-up to remove the last remnants of the damage, but the young one is completely clear, just like Korus.
Upon awakening, the girl immediately asks how much time has passed, and takes the answer with great relief. You and Korus speak to her for a bit before moving on to the other two, glad to know that she is every bit as healthy, intelligent, and inquisitive as you'd expect. The adults, on the other hand, though pain-free and lacking the crushing influence of the third quadrant, are not. They aren't nearly as confrontational, and they don't threaten violence, but they're still clearly uncomfortable and more than a bit angry.
When they are told how long they've been here, the male grimaces, and the female looks away, but neither will tell you why. According to scans, both are healing steadily and should be back to something like average intelligence and emotional control in a short time. However, they are not very talkative and react especially negatively to the presence of humans. Interestingly, they request to stay in your care rather than be returned to their camp. Korus thinks they'll come around eventually, and you shouldn't expect them to be immediately and totally friendly or positive.
After all, they're still people, and people are stubborn. |
