The arrival of spring (as much as it can be called this far North) brings new light and new hope. The well-established Southern farming center is the site of much activity as planting begins, the fields rapidly expanding under the gleaming tools of the golem workforce. To the North, a fine road stretches into the forest, ending at a small clearing positioned directly over a sizable iron deposit, soon to host a mine and a bustling town around it. Dreamwood's supplies of iron, copper, coal, and aluminum grow daily as the existing mines are expanded, and the bauxite deposit has already been mined out.

With utmost care and silent joy, the chained spirit has carved out a magnificent system of tunnels above the bunker but below the surface, all layed out according to your plans. In short order, they will all be connected up, forming the core of an impressive sewer system that will deal with waste far more effectively than the existing structures. The expansion of the rail project has lead to great gains in the distance of the second line, now more than two-thirds of the way to Evermain. A second miniature locomotive is being used to ferry supplies to the crew while the first runs to Fain and back.

Bem continues to increase his network's coverage, even managing to find a buyer for some of your quad-cycles. He has also sent you a small fire magelock, which he says probably has enough juice to run one of the locos. Radios, of the standard pulse-type, have been issued to some of the hunting parties, though their limited battery supply and even more limited range keep them from seeing much use. Still, R&D continues its work, improving the designs constantly while some of the literate are taught Morse Code.

Several repeating rifles have been produced, though they are not without their problems, and do not have interchangeable parts. For now, they are being used with the muskets for firearms training and target practice. Plans for a breech-loading weapon are in the works, along with all of the other projects, such as mechanical typewriters. The town surgeon, in the absence of other duties, is training a few capable hands in dissection. They are years away from becoming doctors, even in a relatively backwards place like this, but the framework is there.

Five retired soldiers have arrived from the Southwest, taking you up on your offer to quarter them in Dreamwood. All are middle-age, one is a cavalryman and the others are infantry.

An emissary has arrived from Grennet, the Western town past Sollis. He wishes to negotiate for rail service.

You have received warning from the tower line of a roving group of Envids just North of the border, within Cyreth. Envids are six-limbed creatures resembling jumping spiders, large enough to be used by Frost Giants as mounts. They can sense heat and are capable of eating animals the size of polar bears whole.

It is the 28th day of the 2nd month, year three after embark.

Offer the soldiers positions within the militia; their prior military training and background should help.
Keep an eye on those envids; warn the hunting parties of their presence. We may need to deal with them personally if they stray too close to occupied lands.

What terms does Grennet offer in return for building a rail line out to them?

Also, how are the other towns and surrounding counties in our little alliance doing? Are we still on starvation rations? Can we begin work on greenhouses and fertilizers so they'll be ready by winter?

Okay, so just to be clear, the construction magelock can be used to build greenhouses, correct? I was afraid that we might have to do research and alchemic production of the glass panes and superstructure for the buildings. If not, then it'll make things much easier.

We should see if we can pull some of the druids and chemically-minded scientists towards making fertilizers. We'll need them for the greenhouses, and it can only help regular crop production.

As cool as that would be, in our civilian capacity, it would require far too much resources to maintain.
Now, if we were to be fighting in the war again, then I could see a much better argument for domesticating one.
But with the food stores at such critical levels, I don't think we should go for a "pony", as giant and awesome as it would be, right now.

Both confirmed. Radios will be issued to all hunting parties operating North and everyone involved in the construction of the industrial town.

They offer a considerably lucrative trade agreement and a 'cut' of the profit of their trade with Fain and Sollis, since they understand their line will connect to both of those. They also offer to buy a miniature locomotive, five cargo carts, and everything required to maintain them.

The other towns are teetering, but the addition of aid from Dreamwood and Fain has stabilized them considerably. You already have fertilizers, and greenhouses can easily be completed during the next month, if you don't get too ambitious.

The native population has simple tastes and enjoys simple things, such as storytelling and plays. The newcomers have more diverse tastes, but generally stick to the rural formula: mock battles, sporting events, drinking in the tavern, music and women.

    >>10740013
Contentment is higher, now that the militia has backed off and the fear of direct action keeps people from fighting in the streets. There is a growing sentiment over the lack of currency, since the outsiders are accustomed to being payed in something they can spend elsewhere. Currently, Dreamwood is essentially communist: citizens are given what they need, and everything beyond that is allocated as supplies warrant. As the population increases, this will become impossible to maintain.

One month has passed, bringing with it more progress on all fronts. Greenhouses have been built in both the town proper and the farming center, providing a place for year-round growing. Intense efforts from golems and men alike have built the farming center into a sizable installation, equaling the 'capital' town in fields. The first, fertilizer-enhanced harvest, is expected next month, and, as expansion outstrips population growth, you should have a massive surplus again by year's end. The Evermain line is complete and in operation, using the spare loco, which is being powered mainly by the magelock, to take the edge off the greater distance.

A hunting group operating near your Northern border brought down a stray, injured Envid, thankfully felling it before it could close the range. After they reported back with their radios, a party was sent to retrieve as much of the meat as possible. The haul will keep indefinitely in low temperatures, but no one will eat it unless it's absolutely necessary. Its exoskeletal plates and eye-covers are being used for projects. Bem's network is expanding rapidly, not just in Fain, but in Sollis and Evermain as well. DCE has operatives emplaced in his workforce, keeping an eye on things outside the borders.

The College of New Aarmour, focusing a great amount of resources on studying electricity, have developed more efficient generators than you currently employ, and they are willing to transfer that knowledge to you in return for specs on your (patented) locomotives. Additional personnel are available, but much of their faculty is now involved in their own R&D projects. Several engineers, two economists, and another counselor have been dispatched. The College is part of a growing network of institutions instructed by the government to build on and further develop 'modern' concepts, many of which originated with you. They are having quite a bit of success, but without your guidance, not as much as they could have.

The sports complex, including a pool, exercise equipment, and various courts and fields has been completed, as have several more parks and another inn. Loco 1's engine broke down on a return trip from Fain, but it was successfully brought in on muscle-power and repaired. Loco 3 is almost complete.

Bell, Jenvil, and Cuvio, all towns around Grennet, are requesting rail service, as is the Grennet garrison, and all four Northern border garrisons within view. Use Garnnet's trade agreement as a base for agreements with the other towns. As for the rail system supporting the military outposts, create a separate contract with the Perin government to create a separate, military-only redundant rail network. The military should like having a rail system of their own, and it won't interfere with the civilian line. Add that the government will have to provide anywhere from 35% - 50% of the workforce, and we will requirement payment of some kind for the effort.

Another month has passed, bringing you into summer. The first harvest of the year has been collected, enabling you to do away with rationing entirely and embrace a return to normalcy. What supplies you can spare are being passed on to the four towns under your wing, and their best and brightest are being given up in return. The connection to Sollis has been completed, and the Grennet line is almost done. Agreements have been made with Bell, Jenvil, and Cuvio, as well as the closer garrisons, which will be providing whoever they can spare as a workforce, with the government's approval. Under the rather incredible provision Bem was able to arrange, Dreamwood will be responsible for linking up all of the Northern towers and garrisons on a separate military line, and it will also be partly responsible for the administration. For this, you're collecting a hefty fee, the government is providing half the workers, and they are also paying the full 'shelf' price for each loco required.

Generator tech has been acquired from New Aarmour, in return for locomotive designs. The first microphone has been produced by R&D, but it is very bulky. Advancements in battery tech have reduced the size of pulse radios for a given operation time. A breakthrough in lens design has given you a viable, portable laser weapon, but at the moment, only magical power sources have enough energy to fire it. Temporary 'apartment' worker housing has been built in the three towns within your borders, to supplement the standard houses that are always being constructed. The population has now exceeded 400.

The rapid influx of currency has made it possible to begin switching over to a mixed economic system. Bem's advice is driving adjustment plans, and the complexity of it all makes you think you'd better leave it to more experienced administrators. The Swiss Army Knife (Dreamwood Blade) is selling well everywhere you've introduced it, interest in science and higher education is increasing, and you are exporting incentive programs to nearby towns, attracting more scholars and potential scholars to the County.

The Bernoulli Effect has been replicated in a university within the government's network. Rudimentary designs for airframes are being proposed.

DCE has discovered a businessman in Fain attempting to replicate and sell patented Dreamwood products without authorization. Orders?

Your mineral squad has discovered something of immense interest: an area of porous rock at the far Eastern edge of your territory holds a black, extremely flammable substance. If their analysis is correct, this 'field' extends much farther to the East, with only a tiny part of its mass within the County.

The Conclave gloats that black powder has greatly increased the army's effectiveness in Forus. Something akin to a mortar is being experimented with by their own version of R&D.

I think we should finish the radio research. We want to have broadcast ability and crystal set radios. We're nearly there with our spark-gap radio and microphone.

We should introduce the idea of buying mineral rights to land, and then buy what can as cheaply as we can in all directions. It will still be expensive, but it will let us buy the rights to the oil deposits without giving away our knowledge of it. If the few people who know about the deposit can keep their yaps shut we'll even be able to ameliorate the worst of the potential resentment and bad feelings later when oil becomes profitable.

We should trade artillery concepts now that they're ready for some of them. We want artillery pieces in the world, even if we don't make them ourselves. That Frost Demon is still out there.

Just something I made in paint real quick.

The red lines are infantry support. The large black circles are heavy artillery, and the smaller ones are light artillery.
The green lines are their arc of fire.

This was a strategy used back in nam by the US Army.

Send this to the military as well as the designs if we do that.

The idea for what this is, is you have 3 main batterys that can fire into the main battle field. Each is protected by a mix of light and heavy infantry, and backed up by at least 3 light artillery guns that can take out anyone attempting a flanking maneuver.

Typically you would have a rear guard as well.

An additional month has brought you to the end of the 5th, halfway through the year. Steadily increasing crop yields will see your granaries filled before winter. The Grennet line is complete, branching to both Cuvio and Jenvil. A Western garrison line is under construction, using primarily military labor, and a line through Streamlow to Merdis is also being built. Various courses on 'sustainability' and 'minimizing ecological damage' are being taught in the central campus. A priest has been hired to handle spiritual matters, and furnished with a temple. The counterfeiter in Fain has been dealt with, and is now working closely with Bem, but not under his control. DCE is looking into his associates for possible unlawful activities.

The first voice radio transmission was made yesterday. It was frightfully low quality, but understandable. Short-range audio transmitters and receivers are now available, though they cannot do both at the same time and there is only one 'band'. A Rail Yard has been constructed, in addition to Locos 4 and 5. A Merchant's Academy has been built in the main town, and Bem's network has become a corporation, headquartered in Dreamwood. Mineral rights have been acquired in portions of Strade's and Evermain's territory, and a drill is being built on the Eastern edge, with a pipeline planned to run to the industrial town.

Dreamwood's most effective people are receiving 'gifts' that just happen to be charmed with miscellaneous enhancement effects. R&D#2 is underway, researching various magical disciplines and teleportation. R&D#3 is working on combining technology and magic. All locomotives have been magically enhanced to increase their speed and reliability. All major industrial structures now extend at least partially underground, and the tunnel spirit has been coaxed into running subterranean lines to both the industrial and farming centers. It might be possible to have it build a pipe right into the oil field.

The leadership in Fain is offering you all rights to a sizable chunk of its Northern territory, all the way up to the tower line. The price is their own rail terminal, a few cartloads of iron, and a sum Bem calls 'paltry'.

According to the Conclave, the nation directly North, Cyreth, has received word of rail tech (or been told directly), and wishes to negotiate for their own lines. Given the distance to their closest town, it will be difficult to run anything up there in a timely manner.

It has a good relationship with Perin, its primary trading partner and ally. The only reason Forus never annexed it is because Perin stood in the way.

The Perin-Cyreth Line should be separate from the Perin Military Rail Network. It'll help to not raise tensions (who wants to give their neighbor's military, even an ally's, straight access to your own capitol), and since it'll be more work, it means more money for us in construction fees.

Yes to all three. A standardized repeating rifle has been developed, with interchangeable parts and the molds to match. A breech-loader has been built, but it is not easy to use and the design is being refined. Revolver rifle and pistol prototype have been made, but not refined yet.

You can take firearms on as your personal project, but that will lessen the work you're doing on the laser.

We gave our locomotive tech away? Someone else will be copying and implementing it before long in a more populated area- if they haven't already. We pissed away our chance at a transport monopoly there, and for what? Better generators that we don't really need right now? Ugh...

We need to expand our rail lines as quickly as possible, and maintain as firm of control of them as possible. We're fairly wealthy, so we should be able to hire additional laborers from the various towns that we're attempting to build to in order to accelerate production; do so. Our income can come from taking a small percentage of the value of transported goods, and a small fee for messages or personal transport, but don't worry about running a deficit at the moment- we need to establish a firm cash-over-time flow as fast as we can.

Emphasize growth southward. We need to get a line to the major cities and then between them as quickly as possible, and secure agreements for the transport of goods with the various merchants, nobles, and what have you that live there before anyone else manages to. Once we've reached the first city there should be enough labor for hire that we can get a large number of additional workers and push for the growth of numerous rail lines- and the major city-major city lines should be major cash generators. Our economic teams should be able to handle the details, and also their own expansion. Likewise our intelligence apparatus should be able to expand vigorously as we gain easy transport into additional towns.

We can keep prices low, but making the use of any train line free (other than for our personnel) sets a bad precedent. Even the military should be paying us a fee to operate and maintain their trains as external contractors, once their lines are done.

We should basically be setting ourselves up as ruler of Dreamwood, and as a separate but loosely related matter as the CEO of this world's very first international rail corporation. Shoulder/buy out all others who try to break into the industry, charge standard fees, and spread our influence/presence as rapidly as we can to every city that we can reach with no respect whatsoever for political boundaries except as they influence our profit and expansion.

In addition to providing us with wealth and credibility, which is an end in itself since we're still a highly unusual personage in this world, having control of a major transport corporation will provide us with the influence that we'll need to act on a large scale in the future, much more so than as a border sub-ruler.

While whipping out a new technological trick every week is nice, it's not going to provide us with a solid economic and influence base on an international level. What we need for that is large-scale implementation and reliability, as well as a reputation and network of agreements and allies which can only be built over time.

As for the note to Hretmar:
"Hello Hretmar, it's been a while. I'm sorry I didn't contact you sooner. I hope that the rest of the Perinese Pantheon is treating you well, and that everyone is showing you appropriate respect in your libraries.
Dreamwood is progressing nicely, and expanding quite fast. It is getting to the point where I might finally be forced to delegate even more of my administrative duties; not that it's a completely bad turn, because now I can devote more time to my own projects.
Which brings me to something I've been meaning to ask you. Do you happen to know of any other major repositories of Frost Giant knowledge besides the Great Wall? I'd like to study some more about the Frost Giants if I can, and what they were once capable of. If you could give me a reply, that would be great.

    Thank you for everything again.

    Your faithful servant,
    Maya"

Yes, which the Perin-Cyreth Rail Line should help quite nicely in doing. This will be our first international work, and a chance to show the surrounding nations what our technology is capable of.
Once the line is complete, and the money starts flowing, other nations will begin pounding down our door to have a rail system built in their countries and having them connected to ours.

While I'm not against that project, it's not fast enough. We need to be building our rail lines right now, where the money is and people are, before someone else gets the jump on us. The resources that Cyreth has and all the associated potential profit will keep until someone successfully prepares large-scale transit to them; the possibility of being the first one to establish passenger and good lines internal to Perin is a fleeting time window that we cannot afford to ignore. If we don't focus on the national rather than international market right now, then it won't be our door that people come to with the next contract- it'll be that of whatever wealthy backer successfully took our idea and implemented a rail company in the more populated areas of Perin.

Wait; we haven't even finalized a construction contract with Cyreth and Perin yet. I'm saying that we need to start planning it now.
I agree with you on constructing the internal Perinese rail network as quickly as possible, though. It may be prudent to require all towns that sign a construction contract with us to provide some percentage of manpower to assist in the construction, in addition to the normal cost of building and laying down the rails. As we go farther south, we may need to start creating branches of our Dreamwood Rail Corporation to hire up workers to keep the breakneck pace of construction going. We'll also need to double-check all of our rail lines before final approval, though. Working at that fast of a pace, people might be tempted to cut corners to achieve deadlines, or simply make mistakes.
The very last thing we need is to be responsible for Perin's first ever railway accident and casualties.

We need to figure out what's going on with the pantheon. Why would any kind of "secret project" make even Hretmar remain completely out of contact for so long?

Was the request for a Cyrethian ambassador to negotiate the rail construction contract sent via the Conclave? Since this will be an international rail line, I imagine that the Perinese government will want a representative at the negotiations, but we should check with them first, just to be sure.
Estimated arrival time is 2 months, correct?

It was. As long as the rep remains in contact with the Conclave, no actual government personnel need be present, but current plans allow for the presence of the commander of the border defenses and someone from a local office.

The emissary will arrive within two months if everything goes as expected. Obviously, he will have an escort with him.

I am concerned with this as well. Should we spend a favor with the Conclave to find out what's going on? I mean, it's one thing for the Perin Pantheon to be working on a secret project for them, but to even include Hretmar and not let him talk to us? That's very peculiar, almost as if...
    OH. SHIT.
Could they be working on a Manhattan Project? Is there any way that what we told Hretmar could have gotten out?

I think we can begin ironing out the outlines of a contract while he makes his way here. The final thing, of course, should be signed and sealed in physical form. It's the formality of the thing that's needed. But there's no reason why we can't begin planning things like where the line will go or how many trains will run on it, or if we'll build a neutral Terminus Station at the border between the two nations. General stuff so that we can dig right into the nitty-gritty of fees and taxes as soon as he arrives in person.

He swore to us, that he would keep it secret. He swore that he would never tell anyone else...unless...he felt it was necessary...
Or, someone could have been eavesdropping. We did at the dead of night, but that doesn't we weren't followed...especially if the Conclave had an agent or two tasked with keeping an eye on us...

No, we explained the premise behind the weapon, the materials required, and how they need to be shaped.
We explained the basic idea of a nuclear chain reaction, that it can be harnessed in one catastrophic uncontrolled super-critical chain reaction, how a super-critical mass can be formed, and how to initiate the device.
Hretmar might not know how to design an explosive lens, but he knows enough for a simple gun-type nuclear device.

So, I think we have most things ready for tomorrow.
We're going to begin negotiations with the Cyreth envoy, with Perin attending.
We're going to continue with our fast railroadification of Perin and make sure our stranglehold is nice and strong, and make sure that the tracks are up to spec to avoid any train crashes.
We're going to build some guns for us and train with them a bit, then visit the eastern ruins in the swamp.

I think the only thing we're undecided on, is if we'll pursue contacting Hretmar, or leave the matter along as he told us to.

Unfortunately, that would be due to the current state of the Frost Giant population and their apparent biological/magical curse.
I'll need someone who remembers more clearly to correct me, but as I recall, just about the entirety of the Frost Giant population has devolved into savage barbarism. This doesn't appear to be so much an environmental factor, as a biological one (with possible magical causes), due to evidence concerning Hill Giants (offspring of Frost/Mountain Giants). Hill Giants succumb to schizophrenia after about 50 years or so on average (theorized to be the result of conflicting natures, the savageness of the Frost Giant and the contemplative calm of the Mountain Giant), and though many have tried, not even magic was able to prevent them from succumbing eventually.
I believe that whatever magic pulled us from our Human body on Earth, gave us some kind of protection against the effects of residing withing a Frost Giant body, and whatever genetic or magical compulsions it might normally have on our mind.

But, getting back to why we don't have a Frost Giant girlfriend: we're busy with being the Harbinger of SCIENCE!, and there's the whole barbarian savage thing to get over, and even finding a tribe that would be willing to talk before caving our skull in with a 110MPH 200-lbs boulder shotput from a mile away. And that's all before the whole lesbian/not-really-because-we're-a-man-in-a-woman's-body thing.
