They're researching a sort of shielding device for space combat that they have codenamed the "Disco". Essentially, thousands of drones armed with several high-powered lasers are attached to the hull with a strong magnetic field. When combat is initiated, the magnetic field weakens, leaving them hovering within short range of the vessel, remaining close to it purely due to the magnetic field. They continuously fire their lasers for half an hour, when they are forced to recharge for ten minutes back on the hull. Anything caught in the invisible laser-show is disintegrated by the sheer power. Essentially, this is a point defense that renders the ship using the Disco system practically invulnerable to mass drivers and missiles. Only energy weapons are effective.
