9 KB Doppleganger Damacy XV TempDM !!WBgKxxhAACV 06/08/10(Tue)19:17 No.10369165
The basic premise: You started out as a generic creature with no voice, no skills, feats, or special abilities whatsoever, and every stat at 10.
Whenever you eat a creature you acquire one of its traits. Permanently. For the purpose of this quest, that means I'll give you a short list to choose from.

It's been about a week since you woke up in the city as a weak being with only the ability to devour the traits of others. Since then, you've eaten your way to a strong, fit body--you're now not only a deadly ambush predator, but one able to prevail in straight combat. You've acquired speed, strength, resilience, and versatility, leaving behind a string of disappearances in your wake.

It's early evening. In the wake of devouring the sword-for-hires and rescuing Claire, you've decended into the sewers once more to hunt. Here, light is forgotten, the blackness shortening your vision and stealing the colors away. You've descended to a second level of tunnels within the sewers, and are standing in a corridor of nearly chest-deep sludge water, the water from the first level falling around you. You've heard chirping to your right--the tunnel appears to rise in that direction. To your left, you pick up a faint unknown smell.

What is your plan of action?

    Consensus, please?

    >move towards it all stealthy reedy the poisoned cross bow bolts
You gave the crossbow to Claire. You've got a longbow now with greater range and damage--but you forgot to keep the string dry, so it's not going to be shooting well. Also, you can't see past 60 feet in this pitch-blackness. Well-wait. You couldn't. Off to the right, a faint burst of blue light appears a ways out, but it was either around a corner or you couldn't adjust to it enough to see what caused it before it was gone.

    >duck it then we got plenty of hp lets be snekker with the bow find the cherp/light
    >I agree with you though, let's go right after the light.

You head off to the right, following the occasional chirp. After a minute and a turn in the tunnel, you spot a large lizard walking on its hind legs. It bolts immediately into a large crack in the wall at your approach. On closer look, the crack must go pretty deep in--you don't see the lizard inside. You might be able to wedge yourself in after it though.

    Action?

    >can we identify the lizard?
You haven't seen it before, and your knowledge of creatures is decidedly lacking.

    >fire a few arrows into the crack then go in
You fire a few arrows into the crack. Despite the sopping bowstring, they fly straight enough, but you hear them snapping off rock inside. From the sound of it, it must get larger within the crack--but there wasn't anything in the way of the arrows.

    >didnt we know what our potions were now?
You do, that slipped by me on the sheet. You have 2 potions, one of strength and one of speed. You gave the other to Claire, but she didn't mention what it was.

    >how much would we have to squeeze to get into the crack.
Tight fit at first, but it should get easier, from the sound of the arrows, as you get inside.

You barely are able to wedge yourself into the crack, but manage somehow. Unfortunately, as you squeeze inside you find the entrance is loose stones in a pile near it--and they slide down in a light clatter when your weight is on them. You slide with them before gaining your feet, and then see what's living inside this narrow cave.

Lizards. At least one is flashing bright blue at any given time. And there are over a dozen of them, all looking at you.

    Lethal Shock (Su)

Whenever two or more shocker lizards are within 20 feet of each other, they can work together to create a lethal shock. This effect has a radius of 20 feet, centered on any one contributing lizard. The shock deals 2d8 points of electricity damage for each lizard contributing to it, to a maximum of 12d8. A Reflex save (DC 10 + number of lizards contributing) reduces the damage by half.

How are they positioned? Any we could melee (read:NOM) without being flanked?

IF they move to us, scramble to the mouth of the cave, pick 'em off one at a time if they persue. We can't afford to be flanked

They could still kill us if they swarm and bite, you guys know. Yeah, +3 to hit and 1d4 damage isn't that impressive, but I doubt we'll get more than another round or two while they figure out that we're immune now.

Use the bow and pick a few off until they come closer, then escape through the crack again (backwards, with claws facing them as you go through the crack) as fast as possible until you get to the very exit. They'll be stuck in a line then and we can kill and nom as we please.

Seeing the lack of a shocking success, the lizards try to flee to the back of the cave. You grab another one, who bites you in the process. Ow, little fucker. His flesh just about heals the damage. His brother finishes the job, with you grabbing more carefully. Then the rest of his family starts healing what they caused, and giving you all sorts of goodies in the process. Your skin is getting a bit bluer in color, judging from the bit of light you can see it in. You feel a faint spark behind your eyes--in fact, you've got a lot of static on you, and there's a faint pop every so often as you discharge a bit of extra electricity.

    OBTAINED Climb Speed 20ft
    OBTAINED Electricity sense
    OBTAINED Stunning Shock
OBTAINED Lethal Shock (Requires additional creature(s) with Stunning Shock or Lethal Shock to use; lumped under Stunning Shock)

You pass the spot you entered the second level and go down a tunnel for several hundred more feet, the water level constantly rising as the tunnel lowers, and the smell growing worse and worse. The water is now right below you, and--

You pull out your knife and begin slicing away furiously. You can see movement underwater as you cut, but focus on getting the task done. Almost half a minute later, you're free and taking a new breath of air. You saw several large shapes heading this way quickly. What is your plan of action?

    >(on an unrelated note, what happened to Morsel the cat we bought for Claire?)
You're not sure, yet. For all you know, Morsel became pic related.

No. Standard action, and it has a special note of once per round maximum.

    >Longsword does 1d8+4 with double damage 10% of the time.
    >Bite does 1d6+4
    >Claw does ... well it does pissweak damage but it's something.
Bite/Claw/Claw routine is pretty standard fare. Multiple attacks mean multiple chances to hit. Claw alone gets full strength bonus to hit--it's halved as part of attack routine. Longsword can also be used two handedly.
I'm sure you've noticed I don't bother with crit confirming because it slows things down, is less fun to see unconfirmed crits, and I tend to forget about crit confirmation anyways. So yeah, 10% double damage is correct.

Heading back to the temple is just too suspicious so soon; you head to the inn Claire said she'd be at. You find her taking a catnap over her spellbook near the front, with a large female innkeeper keeping an eye on her. She tenses up when you wake her with a little jolt of residual static, but relaxes when she realizes it's you. "Guess what happened on the way. Actually, don't. I'll tell you in the room." She waves to the innkeeper as you head to the room.

We need to get Clare a new place to brew potions, for one thing. That haste saved our asses. Also, we could seriously buff up our bite attack with another gator, and they have a number of other traits we could use. We could even take them down without much risk, plinking away from the sewer roof.

OH, also, we NEED a waterproof quiver and sheath for the bow.

Additionally, I'd like to see if we could do some stalking/nomming of adepts at the library, maybe thieves prior to that to boost our chances. We should also try to alert our badass blood bodysnatching buddy prior to skipping town - a powerful ally, and one we cannot afford to lose.

I'm not sure what the general suspicion level of the populace towards the dopple is, but we've killed a fair few people (a noble, a baker's family, derrin the town guard, a pack of adventurers, 2 thieves, numerous hobos, borat, 3 stable workers, numerous stable animals). In one week. with the same motherfuckin' MO. I don't think anyone has conclusively ID'd -us- as the murderer, but they know a murderer is out there.

Right now, we can be tracked by 4 things:
    1. Scent - doppleganger is apparently trackable by this, even if his appearance changes.
    2. Abilities - the townspeople know, or at least SUSPECT, that the doppleganger is a strong, fast-moving, stealthy motherfucker. Zipping around at WARP DOPPLEGANGER will draw them onto us.
    3. Missing persons - The townspeople will know that Derrin is acting very strangely lately. While they don't know that we can change appearance at-will, they WILL track down an individual appearance as it goes missing. That will lead them to us.
    4. Stolen goods -
    Stolen goods -
    Stolen goods -
    Stolen goods -
    Are now FORFEIT.
You. You you violate. The law.

Yeah, it's gonna be damn hard to pin -us- down as responsible for the murders. But they know a murderer exists. I second eating a guard captain or a counter-spy and obtaining their knowledge, so that we may gain the appearance of some random dumbass nobody knows. That way people won't track us from the missing person angle.
As for scent - right now the only things in the city capable of tracking us by that are guard dogs, and while guards will obviously investigate any murder, they WON'T go into dangerous areas to follow a scent trail, and we delve into those areas all the fucking time. As long as we keep moving, keep hunting, and NEVER stay in one place for too long, we can avoid being tracked by scent.
Being tracked by sold goods is easy enough - either sell them to the criminal underworld or change appearances after selling them.

Abilities - that's one of the key ones. If anyone sees us moving or killing and manages to survive, they will know what we look like at the time. We've already been seen ONCE exiting the brothel, possibly TWICE leaving the second stable, and who knows what else has seen us jumping about like commander motherfucking keen on a goddamn pogostick.
Once they realise the same set of abilities transfers from person to person, they'll know what we are, and they'll warn other towns about it.

We don't want that to happen.
    So here's the plan:
Eat an experienced guard or a counter-spy. Take their knowledge.
Eat some recluse who hardly anybody knows - someone who won't be noticed. Take his appearance.
Sell all the looted shit to the criminal underworld who won't ask any questions.
Don't let anyone see us using our godly abilities and survive to tell the tale.
Go on frequent trips in places that it would be too dangerous to take a tracking dog.

If we had attacked instead of running away we would have had a chance, I think. Our full attack now looks like +6 longsword/+1 claw/+1 bite/DC 14 Stunning Shock (since Stunning Shock doesn't use an action). Once we ate one and got multiattack, things would just keep getting better. At the very least, we'll be doing 1d8 damage every round, and if they fail their save, odds are pretty good that Sahuagin will be going down.

It'll deal an average of 3.5 Con damage, which would translate to dealing about 4 HP damage. Not really worth it, unless it's neccessary.

Also, next time we should totally go into sewers to kill at least one Sahuagin for Multiattack. Preferably after we nom a few frogs on the riverbank to get Aquatic and Amphibious, so they won't be able to drown us.

Squid can put up a fight. Random fish can't. Besides, there are more useful things we can get off a squid, like their Jet and Ink Cloud abilities.

Also, where there are sahuagin, there are sharks, and Keen Scent would be quite nice; it triples the range of our scent and lets us detect blood in water up to a mile away.
