One thing: Our magic. As awesome as it is, I'm afraid I've run into problems with "compounding backlash that eventually kills you" systems when DMing before. One of two things happens: Either they never use it because they are scared to die or they use it constantly because it's awesome and head goes pop. The second of those two seems to be happening here, especially with things as small as as spell that is "simplicity itself" (summoning a bat) incurring backlash.

Maybe we can get a slowly emptying backlash meter or something? When we go for a while without using magic our mind recuperates? Or maybe some way to be able to cast basic spells without breaking our sanity?
