See, OP is clearly simply not catering to his/her player base. Time for a custom campaign setting.

10,000 years after mankind developed a flawed immortality virus, the players are commerce raiding monks who ply their ways in a post-apocalyptic sea of the dead. All the living have settlements on inaccessible plateaus surrounded by trillions of ravening zombies. All the dead will revive after a week and regenerate fully. Funeral rights consist of a burial at sea.

The ships "sail" on top of the zombie sea by hanging meat out the back of the boat, and crowdsurfing their way forward.

THAT is what OP should be making their players act out.

My gaming group has never played anything involving pirates, zombies, ninjas or cthulu.

We've been talking about running a zombie survival game just because for us it actually would be different than what we usually play. Sure there's lots of media about zombies already but that's not an issue for my group. We like roleplaying character portraits so it would be more about character development in a weird setting than "oh no zombies burst through the wall again scary scary"

I'm glad OP is not my DM. His games must be boring wankfests if the setting is more important than the PCs.

The Dangers of sailing the Sea of the Dead:
I imagine the ships have a crude safety cage for the crew, but a full capsize would be instantly fatal. Only an master mariner and crew have the
skill to trim the meat "sails" that steer and propel the boat without sucking the supports out from under it. Larger vessels have emergency wheels that can be dropped at a moments notice to support the vessel in "rough seas"
Becoming "becalmed" - if you run out of meat, you've got to find some somewhere. No-one chooses to make a long voyage by choice. There is an intricate network of short-haul trade routes.

Wolverine can wear a pink tutu and get fucked in the ass by a hundred little boys and people would go FUCK YEAH BADASS, while Aquaman could shatter a submarine in two with his chest and beat the shit out of every man onboard so hard their heads exploded, and people would go LOL SO LAME

Hell, there was once a "what if" comic where Aquaman has had ENOUGH of everyone's shit and says "NO, I DO NOT FUCKING TALK TO FISH. I COMMAND ALL CREATURES THAT EVER CAME FROM THE SEA. "...the boy who would become Black Manta grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, and loved to play by the sea. As a youth he was kidnapped and sexually abused on a ship for an unspecified amount of time. At one point he apparently saw Aquaman with his dolphin friends and tried to signal him for help but was not seen. Finally, he was forced to defend himself, killing one of his tormentors on the ship with a knife. Hating the emotionless sea (and Aquaman, whom he saw as its representative), the boy was determined to become its master."

YEAH, THAT'S NOT AT ALL STUPID.

From your previous post it really seemed like you were the "other" type of roleplayer who squeltches creative roleplaying in the name of having the party function as a team 24/7 even if it doesn't make sense. Also fair enough if you're railing against new character gunbunnies. I interpreted you as having a problem with (for example) an established hunter party that gets its hands on an AK and keeps it with them because they have to deal with motherfucking werewolves etc.

The word went around about my games having a high body count, with the majority being NPCs but with PC death being an ever-present opportunity for the dumb and unwary. As a rule, the average player in my game has, at one point or another, picked up a weapon or two they're unfamiliar with and done what comes naturally: used it until it went click, then either discarded it or absorbed it into the growing pool of hardware. From there, it is traditionally either learned by one or more PCs or discarded as unnecessary weight. They've gotten their hands on a flamethrower once, a box of grenades (now empty) and a LAW rocket (which was fumbled when it was used, to hilarious effect; blew up their own boat. Srsly.)

They're packing legal heat, such as revolvers and shotguns; my CoC games are not based on sheer damage but sheer determination. One PC, in a fit of pique that he'd run out of ammo, clubbed a BBEG to death with an empty Thompson SMG.

Also: the thing which ate werewolves? They used a ritual spell to kack it. Kind of sucked, because I was hoping for a climatic showdown. Pfft.
