9 KB Doppleganger Damacy XIV TempDM !!WBgKxxhAACV 06/01/10(Tue)21:37 No.10212117
The basic premise: You started out as a generic creature with no voice, no skills, feats, or special abilities whatsoever, and every stat at 10.
Whenever you eat a creature you acquire one of its traits. Permanently. For the purpose of this quest, that means I'll give you a short list to choose from.

It's been about a week since you woke up in the city as a weak being with only the ability to devour the traits of others. Since then, you've eaten your way to a strong, fit body--you're now not only a deadly ambush predator, but one able to prevail in straight combat. You've acquired speed, strength, resilience, and versatility, leaving behind a string of disappearances in your wake.

It's afternoon, and you've just finished a daring assault against a safehouse of sword-for-hires who tracked you for days, before kidnapping your ally Claire and setting a trap to kill you. None of the group remains alive. You're bloody and weak from the fight, but you've got significant improvements to show for your effort--knowledge of the ways to wield weaponry, a more advanced digestion, and your first taste of magic. You've rescued your ally Claire, and gained a new ally--an unnamed bodysnatcher who fought alongside you.

In the wake of your victory, there is much to be done. What is your plan of action?

At the end of last thread, you had some things you wished to get done right away.

    >Cut a deal with Claire; you take over all the courier jobs, she studies (on what little materials she has left, but that will improve with time), in return she's gotta find ways to improve our growth.
"What, go back to how things were? No. Fuck that. This made me realize something, Jack. Going through all the effort of learning magic just to use it to help people is a waste. I couldn't stop them from taking me; I couldn't keep them from hurting me. All that work was worthless. So screw helping people.

No one is ever hurting me like that again."

    >Give Claire the crossbow and the normal dagger.
"And they say men never listen."

    >Can she identify the potions?
"That one will give you a boost of strength, that one will give you a boost of speed, and that one--actually, why don't you give me that one."

    >We make a good team, you and I. I'm sure we'll cross paths again in the future. Stay safe, bro.
    >Give the secret doppelganger handshake.
"I return the sentiment. For now, farewell."

    >Head with Claire to the burnt out remains of the house. Salvage what we can.
Claire looks like she wants to start crying at the sight of her burned out house, but heads into the rubble with a set face and starts digging. There's not much that survived, and less still of value. Eventually, you manage to locate a cheap safe beneath several collapsed beams and pry it out. "Oh please, please don't be ashes inside..." Claire mutters, working the lock. A stroke of luck--the book is mostly intact, although the edges of most pages are charred, the contents should be still useable. Claire gives the house one last look. "We've got what we came for. Let's go."

Going to be a relatively short session tonight. Much as I tried, this was the soonest I could start.

Also on the list that people wanted to do:
    >Heal, either by eating or by the church
    >Find a place to rest, such as an inn, Borat's house, or the church
    >Hunt lycanthropes
    >Hunt things other than gators in the sewers
    >Recon the wizards running the library

    >"I think I've seen enough of this city. Where should we go from here?"
"We, huh? Sounds good to me. If you want to leave, then where to go depends on what your plans are.

We need to do something about our appearance. Looking like one of two guards that disappeared while on duty is asking for trouble.

Agreed that we should leave the city, too; with us and the other guy killing and feeding, the locals are going to get paranoid in a hurry.

I say we don't leave the city yet. Just use it as a safe place to rest while we hunt. We don't have a great place to go from here, and we just took out our primary pursuers.

Guys, I'm not going to try to control this hivemind but I strongly suggest leaving town. When the guards are noticed missing, they will track from the guardstation we eat the guy to the adventurer's hole. And riling up wizards before we can take them out is also a bad idea.

    >oh and what does Every Last Bite do again?
Normally you recover 1 HP per meal. This means for bigger meals, with multiple HD creatures, you get HP back equal to the number of HD they had. So a 3 HD creature gives you 3 HP.

    >in fact... did we eat all the corpses? including the rogue even if reverse vampy already ruined it
You cleaned up the gore, though there's still ample blood splatters throughout the room.

Quite the split in what you want to do. Shall we first to 3 it?

You head to the church of Pelor, Claire in tow. She could use a look at those burns, and those bruises aren't exactly a great way to avoid attention.

You see the balding, rotund priest of Pelor inside. "Ah, Darrin! Good to see you; how's the wife? And who's this?" He gets a closer look at Claire's bruises and exclaims, "You poor girl! Works for me. Claire will know what to do with spell scrolls.

Buy a bunch more arrows - 220 will be enough, for a total of 250. That many arrows can drop a Bear, and we -are- going to need to drop a Bear at some point in our lives.

AFTER the sewers, see what can be done about hiring a Tracker or a Hunter or a Ranger to find some specific animals. An Owl has massive move silently. A Badger has a burrow speed. Spiders have lots of good stuff. A predatory cat has pounce and rake. Brown bears have incredibly powerful claws.

Seeing like this is an odd feeling, especially when--hey, that's something unusual. It looks like an ordinary feather just floating in the water, but there's a faint aura about it. Something to look more into later, perhaps. You don't see anything else, though.

As you go farther into the sewer, you see the murky water and debris slowly pouring down into a second level underneath. Looks like it's a different style of carving. A quick look, and you should be able to leap back up to the first level, if the water down there isn't too deep.

I'd say we can pull off a CR:3 or CR:4 if we're careful, clever, and a bit lucky. Also, we ideally want full health and full stealth.

Keep in mind that the CR system was designed for a party of 4 having an average of 4 encounters per day. We're a single individual who has a wildly varying number of encounters. CR:1s and below are quite safe for us, though.

We're planning to kill a Choker but we don't know if those exist in this world or not.
If we do kill the choker, bears, and cats, the Doppleganger takes a leap from his (rough) CR of 2.5 to a CR of 5, easily.
Charge attack -> Pounce (2 claws, 1 bite) + Rake (2 claws) using up 1 full action, then the Choker's free action we use to Move away.
Result: 4 claws and 1 bite every motherfucking round, with powerful motherfucking claws, and ending up 60ft away from whatever plans to counterattack.
Compare to currently: 1 claw, 1 bite.

Actually, we attack on the Charge, don't we?
We can't actually be wielding anything to get the Rakes off, so we'd have to Claw or Bite, but still.
And I suppose we could use the Choker's extra action to bite if we wanted a MAXIMUM STIRKE.

    Imagine this:
1d3 Str damage from a spider
1d3 Dex damage from a centipede
1d6 Con damage from a snake
And all of these have a secondary for the same effect.
We bite 3 times in one surprise round.
Next round, we can run away, using a full round action to run up to 4*speed (240 feet) in a straight line, then use the move action to move 60 feet in any direction.
Then we simply wait for the secondary poison to take its toll.

Down 6d6 con, 6d3 str and 6d3 dex, any enemy is a virtual freekill - and if it still isn't fucking dead we surprise attack it again.

Then we wouldn't have to worry about a changing appearance. We'd be all normal-looking until we shifted into OHFUCKWHATISTHAT shape.

    from thread one:
You then eat your way through the few birds she has. You develop a membrane under your arms. You don't think you'll be able to properly fly just yet (you'll have to eat a medium sized or larger flying creature for that), you will be able to glide just fine.

I'll point out we are proficient with the waraxe if we wield it in two hands. That's 1d10+6 damage, right there; between the waraxe and the longsword, the cricket bat is just plain redundant.

speaking of fay gang(2-4) of Grigs would net us some nice bonuses.

    Damage reduction 5/cold iron
    Escape Artist +8, Hide +18
3/day-disguise self, entangle (DC 13), invisibility (self only), pyrotechnics (DC 14), ventriloquism (DC 13). Caster level 9th.

When you're looking at a monster's skills, you have to reverse-engineer them to figure out how many ranks there are.

In the case of the Grig, that's Craft (any one) 4, Escape Artist 4, Hide 4, Listen 2, Move Silently 1, Perform (string instruments) 4, Search 2, Spot 2.

I propose leaving the city with Claire. There's nothing holding us here anymore. Search for appropriate destination, buy some supplies and head off. Maybe notify our friend.

Before leaving, we could break into a rich persons shop or house and steal some money and valuables. We should do it at night and have Claire waiting for us out side the city. Then we rejoin and continue the journey. We don't HAVE to do it, it's just an option.

Another thing that had occurred to me long time ago but never got to the quest to tell it, is that we could search for a site of major battles. Search for ongoing campaigns, wars between other countries. Travel there. And stalk a battlefield, when the fighting dies we might have hundreds of bodies to feast on.

And for this Cuckatoo-thing that can petrify in one sight. Could we leave it alone, please? DM WILL kill us if we botch this up, make no mistake. Just om nom some alligators.

Also, we should search for ways to make Claire magic better. Maybe have her dabble in forbidden magics like necromancy or some shit.
