You are young acolyte in the Ordo Xenos, of the rank Explicator, and until recently, under the tutelage of the renowned Inquisitor Astrum Tyrannus.
Currently you are in the Eastern Fringe of the Ultima Segmentum, the edge of known Imperial space.
More specifically, you are on a Black Ship, the dread transport employed by the Adeptus Astra Telepathica in their eternal quest to feed the voracious psychic appetite of the Emperor.
Currently you have no duties, and are waiting to be dropped off on the Imperial border world of Perlia. You’ve spent the past two weeks reading your mission specs, preparing yourself, studying the history, geography, climate, etc. of Perlia, rereading your mission specs, and sitting around bored out of your skull.
Recently you’ve taken to strolls around the ship. Right now it is empty of its current mournful cargo of psykers, having just made the return trip to Holy Terra, and so you are free to wander about.
On one of your walks, you head down the corridors of the blackship you see an open door that you had never seen.
Inside the open door you see a female tau restrained against her will with a gag in her mouth.
    WHAT DO?

You slowly enter the room and look around. Things are very, odd, to say the least. There aren't any the normal signs of the first stages of interrogation. Admittedly, most of those stages involve just describing what happens in the later stages to those who don't cooperate, but the Tau doesn't seem to show any of the normal signs of those rougher methods.

The captain of the ship is quite a mysterious fellow. So far, you've only met face to face with him just before the ship had entered the warp, and even then it was purely by accident. Apart from his name, Toby Longworth, and the name of the ship, Validus, you know almost nothing about him.
Most of the orders seem to be issued from the second mate, you think his name is Gree, or Smee, or something like that.

Would if you could, however, as far what goes on this vessel, not an option. Right now you’re the lowest rank of acolyte, and aboard a ship whose commanding officers are empowered by both the Inquisition and the Adeptus Terra to do as they see fight. While you aren’t completely powerless, as far as rank goes on the ship, you’re down there with the midshipmen.

You cautiously begin to approach the tau. Currently she’s dressed in a formless grey shift with the usual =][= stamp of the Inquisition.
Her eyes dart back forth in nervous anticipation as you get closer, and she begins to strain at her constraints as you reach out your hand.
You quickly tear away the gag and a confused stream of the barbaric xeno tongue spills out.
You quickly clamp your hand over her mouth.
“Listen Xeno, for the moment I going to keep things simple. I am going to remove my hand, and ask you questions. You are going to answer them. You do not want to know what will happen to you if you don’t. Do You Speak Gothic?”
You slowly release your grip, and back away.
The tau bites her tongue for a moment, but, just as you are about to replace the gag, she manages to choke out
“Yes,” in a garbled form of Lower Gothic.

She stares back at you blankly.
"Fire, you know, shoot things?" Again this elicits nothing.
You begin miming someone firiing a gun, but stop when she begins shrieking in terror.
Ye gods this is getting annoying. It would be alot easier if you knew the basics of the Tau langauge, but Inquistor Astrum was never really big on that part of his instruction. So far, he had only ever taught you the words pain, death, fire, and ginger. Really to the point, old Astrum.
Some memory stirs a few lessons in the back of your mind, and say to the Tau
    "Shas?"

Pessimism and paranoia are survival traits.

We cannot get caught alone with this xeno. We don't have permission to speak with it, and if it's reported to our superior that we were independently communicating with xenos, particularly using nonstandard techniques (and somehow I don't think we're planning torture in our quarters), we might well get marked radical and disposed of, if only to be safe. Acolytes are a dime a dozen, and without our Inquisitor present to vouch for us things could turn very ugly very quickly.

We don't have to be hunted down at all. It is not too late to dispose of the xeno, conceal or abandon the body, and deny all knowledge of the incident. There are several possibilities here:
    1) The xeno is a legitimate prisoner of our superiors.
    2) The xeno is a secret prisoner of our superiors.
    3) The xeno is the prisoner of someone who does not outrank us.

If 1), then there would have been a guard, better restraints, and so forth. Therefore the xeno is not being held on legitimate Inquisitorial business.

If 2), we do NOT want to get caught knowing anything about the xeno, because as soon as it's discovered we'll be eliminated to cover their tracks. Further investigation of possible suspects would be merited if it wasn't so likely to be fatal; more practical would be to mentally mark them as possible Radicals for later in our career, when we have actual power.

If 3), then as in 2) someone will be likely to come after us and kill us for knowing about the xeno, but if we kill her and our superiors find out they'll be much more likely to be okay with it, as the "see xeno->kill xeno" paradigm is a well accepted one.

I fail to see how interrogation helps our long-term prospects in any probable case.

Agreed that we communicate with the Tau first, but I still want the information- a wise acolyte plans ahead. Prior to interrogating the xeno, we should utilize our parchment or dataslate (as preferred) to write a report on what has happened so far, then record learned information as the interrogation progresses. When attempting independent investigations, it is vitally important that one have records justifying what one is doing, lest it be misunderstood and no evidence be available to provide a legitimate explanation.

    Alright, alright, alright.
Alright. Remember what Inquisitor Tyrannus taught, to analysis the situation logically and with a calm mind.
No, wait, that's not right, he taught you to kill the mutant, burn the wytch, and purge the xeno.
Alright, severed heads aside, you came here with a mission, find out what the frak is going on on this ship.
Being careful to put the head back into the compartment without the Tau noticing, you pick up the data slate and, with a small prayer to the machine god, flip open the dictionary function.
Finally, something goes right, it works!

    >The original was called ordo xenos quest. Do with it as you see fit.
You sit down on the gun metal floor next to the xeno, just outside of her reach in case, against all odds, she manages to break free.
She seems to have calmed down considerably from when you first saw her, and now just seems vaguely resigned to being tied up,
You point to the data slate and use the dictionary function to bring up the tau word for conversation, even though in this situation 'interrogation' might be a better word choice.
    She nods.
It seems to understand that you are going to ask her series of questions.
It takes sometime, considering that you have recheck everyother word that comes out of either your or the Tau's mouth, but after a while, you finally start to get the answers to your questions.

    "More tea, sir?"

"Ah yes, thank you." I replied politely to my aide, Gunner Ferik Jurgen, a mere formality at this point, as he was already well underway, filling the recently emptied bowl for my convenience with the familiar blend I had grown so accustomed to over my many years of service.

Though I must admit I had been reluctant to accept the brief vacation thrust upon me by the beurocratic emperor botherers back at the schola, I admit that by the third day of my tour of this little burg on the eastern continent I was finally coming around to the prospect. The chances of being hit by a stray vehicle or any number of other petty accidents were dwarfed by the chances of suffering an accident during my normal duties ever since those third-year frackheads started on the live fire exercises. And whats more, being rushed from banquet to commencement ceremony, to PDF district headquarters opening almost rekindled old memories of my days serving with the guard, memories I'm quite fond of, when they don't involve me being shot at. Even Jurgen seemed to be enjoying himself, stuffing his face at whatever venue we came across and so skillfully brushing off the odd civilian who came asking for autographs who weren't already held at bay by his stench and mottled skin.

Indeed, it had just dawned on me that it would be a decent day after all...

Of course... had I known what trouble was yet to drop down on the sky into my lap, I probably wouldn't have bothered getting out of bed that morning.

"Do you know who brought you to this room?"
Words indicating confusion and uncertainty are picked with this question, but she also picks out Gue'la, the tau word for Human, mask, black, gun, fear, loss, and pain.
"Do you know why you were brought to this room?"
Uncertainty. For all apparent reasons, she has no idea why she was brought to this room. From as near as you can tell, she didn't even know she was on a ship until recently.
"Do you know who is in charge of your interrogation?"
Again the words black and mask appear again and again, along with the usual pain, fear, guns, loss, etc.
"Do you like long walks along the beach in the moonlight?"
This one was actually an accident. The vox function on the data slate decided that moment to kick in, and the auto translator picked up the last thing you had said, which was, to your embarassment, part of a vid sent to the 'The sanctioned selection board of potential Inquisitorial marriage applicants'

    Back to serious questioning.
    >>7355979
Firstly: how did she get on this ship?
She indicates that she was not aware that she was on a ship until well after it had entered the warp.
    Secondly: where was she before?
The last time she remembers knowing where she was was in a minor sept called 'KISM'YN' Apparently her, well, what passes for a husband for a vile xeno, was peddle of heretical goods to human border worlds.
She indicates that her last memory was with him.
Anything more complicated than that becomes confused and garbled.
Well, it looks like, for better or worse, your stuck with the xeno for a while. Might as well learn her name. It'd probably get tired of being called 'abomination' real quick anyway.

Aha! Someone could be using it to gain leverage over such a purveyor of blasphemous instruments to obtain powerful items, the possession of which is without a doubt heretical! I must determine if this creature was captured by inquisitorial agents. Any inquisitorial agent, or inquisitor (!), who would seek such things is profoundly dangerous, and must be uncovered immediately. We must find a way to store and communicate the information that is being uncovered. Is there an astropath aboard that we can contact discretely?
