There are a couple of drawbacks that were added specifically for people who wanted to mimic characters of the show. Thankfully, it is in no way required and making a Kamina-esq character is just as easy as a Shinji.

There is a system for randomly generating you own Angels, and Angelspawn (as seen in Shinji and 40k) ARE a possible power of theirs. This gives the pilots the oppertunity to fight multiple smaller opponents, or to have to purge small swarms of creatures to curb the collateral damage they are inflicting on your Base of Operations.

The general approach of Adeptus Evangelions is thus: The original storyline is there, but you are under no obligation to follow it. For example: the provided sample Bases of Operations are the First Nerv Branch in Boston MA and the Third Nerv Branch in Berlin Germany.

@ Subprocessor: There is a reason why I used Dark heresy, and brutal critical hit charts are among them. I had to write up entirely new charts for the Eva's though, and I don't think that the blood spray is QUITE 100 stories. But it's close.

@ Anon: with ease. You should be able to port most of what you want from Dark Heresy into Adeptus Evangelion and vice-versa to create whatever level of mish-mash you want. Just decide which universe you are using as your baseline first and it should be fine.

The series itself wasn't awful (in my opinion, your milage may vary). But certain elements were specifically designed to be dissapointing.

Shinji Ikari is not a hero. He is a 14 year old boy in need of a hug and a sit-down who gets thrust into what can only be described as the most stressful and traumatic situation EVER. While he is certainly an emo little shit, most of his complaints throughout the series are entirely legitimate (especially considering the way he has been treated by Gendo: World's #1 Dad).

Its the classic coming-of-age tale, except the boy doesn't overcome and because of it the whole of humanity pays the price.

I put the size of the Average Eva to be about 40 meters tall. Because The size is obviously inconsistent and that's what Wikipedia claimed was the average size based on the size of Sachiel's foot to a car, Kaworu to the size of Unit-01s hand and a bunch of other factors. Why do people call Cthulhutech "Cthulhu + Evangelion?" I mean:

-Completely alien lifeforms that can turn you into a gibbering wreck just by glancing in your direction.
-Attempts to understand and utilize the knowledge and nature of the otherworldly beings drives people batshit insane.
-The characters are just normal, everyday(if a bit damaged) people who get thrown into this crazy shit.

You know, the only problem I see with trying to run an Evangelion RPG... is trying to run an Evangelion RPG.

You'd need a good GM, and some Real Roleplayers, because this isn't your average heroic mecha pilot game. An Eva RPG is gonna be grimdark realism, including realistic characters.

That being said, my character in such a game would be panicky, and insist that they're nothing but a reserve pilot. To the point where the "Rei-type" would be in the lead early on, and perhaps going on strike when someone explains the meaning of "third child".

Actually... I'm looking at this PDF and I don't think you are REQUIRED to play a teenager.

It seems to leave it up to the GM about ages and whatnot allowed.

Reading and skimming through the supplement (currently on "Create an Angel"), I must say that you must have put a monumental amount of work into the document. Well done; this stuff is definitely an interesting read. Not too familiar with the core rules but I will be checking those out after the whole of the current document.
For the novice player (unfamiliar with the setting) and those that have not seen the full of Evangelion: don't read some of the later chapters (such as the one on Angels) as that may spoil the fun of certain encounters.

Also from personal experience with the system(I playetested) Teamwork is key and the Op director better be ready to feel useless and be able to think up bullshit plans as the fight progresses. Ours was a master of bs thank god. Also, beserking is a great time. Nothing like literally being unable to be hit and then recking an angels day...and then getting you head chopped off.

The new Rebuild of Evangelion stuff is, I think, the world after Shinji hits the reset button. Everything is similar, but stuff isn't exactly the same as the last time.

It's a bit like the end of The Dark Tower.
