"Shit!" You hit the deck hard, dropping behind the rusted steel of the bridge wall.

This trip hasn't been going smoothly for you. Between having one bed and the crew trying to murder you to steal your shit, it's been rough.

Now that there is a Russian attack helicopter loaded for bear coming in hot, you doubt that the trip can possibly get any worse.

"What is that fucking thing doing here?!" You curse, peeking above the windowframe to watch as the mi-28 Havoc gets closer and closer. Close enough you can see a nice smorgasbord of rockets and missiles adorning its deadly frame, as though the front cannon wouldn't be enough.

"I'm not sure, but this... Could end badly." Kiara admits.

    "Platinum lined?"

"Platinum lined." She affirms, "At least I assume so, I can't detect the pilot."

"Its not the pilot I'm worried about, its the gunner. You may be able to heal me, but probably not if I'm cut to pieces right?"

    "...Right."

I'm hoping only the frame is platinum lined. This does remove the possibility of screwing with the pilot and the electronics but if the missiles/rockets aren't protected can't we just set them off while they're still attached?

If that isn't a possibility get to as much cover as possible and get out the SMAW. We'll use Kiara to help aim it and make sure it hits.

"Didn't think so. Shit, I'm not equipped to deal with this thing." You look over the meager armament you've got. A shotgun with rubber rounds, an AK74u and it's 30mm grenade launcher, and a Sig 228 in .357sig. All in all, not enough to take on an attack helicopter.

    Not by a long shot.

Though the SMAW that is still down in your bunk might be enough. A rocket hit would certainly bring the chopper down or damage it to the point it had to give up it's attack. The problem is the SMAW doesn't fire guided rockets, and the Havoc can engage you from further out than you can even see it.

    "Well maybe they'll just..."

The staccato clatter of 30mm rounds slamming into the bridge mere feet to your left cuts you off, and you dive for cover behind one of the heavier looking consoles.

"Guess them just leaving us alone was asking for too much." You duck as low as you can as more 30mm fire comes in. The heavy rounds shredding through the bridge, punching holes through both walls, obliterating electronics and computer monitors.

"I don't think they're here to just talk."

A burst of yet more fire from the Havoc's chaingun.

"Gee, I couldn't have guessed." You glare but get moving, scrambling for the stairs back down into the belly of the ship. You're only hope is to grab the SMAW, apply a bit of fairy bullshit magic, and hope to hit the mi-28.

"You don't sound confident." A bit of amusement in her voice, besides the alarm?

"I'm not." You hear a loud blast from above you.

"They just took out the bridge with a rocket." Kiara informs you.

    "Groovy...."

It takes you a minute to regain your bearings enough to find you're bunk, you haven't spent much time on the ship to get used to it, and it's a big ship. Kiara giving you directions helps, but only a bit.

You can hear explosions resonating throughout the hull, and you're worst suspicions are confirmed.

"They're trying to sink it...." Kiara says quietly.

Rather than comment, you rip open the duffel as wide as it can go and toss junk over your shoulder as you grab out the SMAW and two rocket tubes. You slap on one of the HEAA tubes and shove another in between your chest and plate carrier. You figure you'll be lucky to get off one shot without getting shwacked by the chaingun or rockets, two would be next to impossible, anything past that is dreaming.

"Hurry up, left here!" Kiara directs you, and you dash up a small set of steel stairs and into the salt air of the deck beyond.

The Havoc has gotten a bit closer, but is still a good three hundred yards out or so, circling as it searches for you. At the same time, it's already blown out large sections of the deck, and judging by some of the sounds you've heard, likely the hull as well.

You stay hidden behind a shipping container, hoisting the SMAW and trying to figure out some course of strategy.

    >already a few ideas being tossed about, but how do you try to engage the Havoc without getting shredded or 'sploded

Can Kiara turn us invisible for a short time? If so that's a good option. Also can she disrupt incoming missiles, either through brute force or electronic manipulation to make them veer enough off that they don't kill us.

Also use the fact that she can't get shot to act as spotter for us so we don't have to pop out of cover for long.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/12(Mon)17:34 No.18642121
Is there any way we can find out if the crew said anything to anyone over the radio? We could just go to the bottom of the ship, punch our way out through the hull, walk to the nearest shore on the ocean bottom. Maybe they'll think we're dead on the ship. It could buy us some time when we get to Italy.

His missiles can't lock onto a man sized target (unless these are Order Brand Magic Missiles but then we'd already be fucked) and his rockets can't do off boresight.

So long as he isn't pointing his nose right at us, primary concern is the cannon. Mofucker's only got 250 cannon rounds, but he's probably saved a couple.

And they probably have a tracker box or eight so getting away is unlikely.

Kiara can spot for us, or if she is feeling particularly helpful, she can take the shot herself. Either way we are gonna need some magic working on guiding our rocket in.

"Hey, if you can activate ECS invisible mode or something, now would be the time."

"Invisibility is possible, but relies on deception of the mind. With them shielded by that platinum, there's no way I can."

"How about their missiles? Their guns? Can you stop them from just killing us?" You let up on your grip, your hands had been so tight around the launcher that they hurt.

"The bullets move too fast, even I don't have that kind of reaction time. At this range, the rockets do as well. I can try to send them off course, but its not something we can rely on."

"Fuck," You exclaim, a bit out of options, "How about this rocket, can you guide it in to that damn thing?"

    "Hmm... Possibly?"

"You're the one who doesn't sound confident..." You gripe, inching closer to the edge of your cover.

"We're only going to get one shot at this, make it fucking count."

"I'm well aware of that! Just get this thing to that damn thing! Alright?!"
    >> Papa-N !!z0ABcqUnNAP 04/09/12(Mon)17:49 No.18642319
A few more inches and you'll expose yourself. You crouch low and ready the SMAW.

"Is the front end focused at us?"

"No, the side is facing our way."

"Than now's our chance. You better make this hit..." You quickly poke around the side of the container, steady the SMAW in your hands, and line up the sights. The mi-28 is still quite distant, on the fringes of the launcher's recommended range, not that it was ever intended for engaging air targets.

Figuring it's now or never, you depress the trigger.

The rocket leaps from the tube, igniting and sailing toward the Havoc. You glance over at Kiara and can tell she's concentrating on guiding it, her eyes tracking the rocket as it gets closer and closer...

The Havoc pilot must have noticed the incoming ordinance, because the helicopter pops chaff and attempts to drop altitude to avoid the rocket. Too little and too late, Kiara makes one last adjustment, and the rocket impacts the tail section...

The attack helicopter bucks from the impact, shuddering in the air. There's too much smoke for you to see what kind of damage the rocket did, but it was certainly a hit.

"Nice work there at the end!" You exclaim, grinning at Kiara who smirks back.

"Of course it was, who do you take me for?"

For a second, everything seems well. Than Kiara's eyes go wide.

Unfortunately, your pleasant conversation is interrupted by a missile impacting the shipping container behind you.

A massive explosion rocks the ship from the large missile. Shards of steel fly in every direction. You duck on instinct, but Kiara holds up a hand and the shrapnel skitters around you, none coming close.

"Holy fuck!" You exclaim, unable to hear yourself, ears ringing. You peek out for a brief moment, and see the Havoc still in the air. The attack helicopter is spewing smoke from the tail section, but somehow still aloft.

While you didn't down the bird, you certainly appear to have pissed it off.

The mi-28's turret is swiveling around, lighting up random sections of the deck, any potential hiding place close to you. At the same time, rockets are impacting far too close for your comfort.

Not sure how she'd take it, but it's worth a shot.
Also, we need to teach her how to shoot. Next time we're out in the country and have some time, we should get her familiar with the different guns we have and how to handle them.
She could probably just get all that by digging around our head a bit, but we don't get a chance to do the whole standing behind her and grabbing her hips bit that way, which appeals more because we'd be teaching her something for a change than anything.

"Make it hit the front end this time!" You yell to Kiara, hoping she wasn't deafened by the explosion, as you pop off the empty tube and load your last rocket into the SMAW.

Lining it up once more, you fire again and dive for cover immediately after. 30mm rounds smacking into the steel deck just a foot behind where you had just been. Close enough that you feel small shards of metal smacking into the rear plate of your armor.

"Got it!" You hear the witch yell in your mind.

Chancing a look, you can see the mi-28 missing a large chunk out of it's middle. It teeters in the air, before a plume of smoke jets out from the cockpit, and you see the pilot shoot out on his seat. This comes soaring toward the deck, the parachute slowing it down slightly, until it makes what you guess is a rather hard impact out of your line of sight.

"Did he land?" You ask Kiara.

    "He did."

    "Platinum jewelry?"

"I'm beginning to dislike when you're right, mortal."

Despite your very real concern that the ship may be sinking, likely due to the fact that it is now listing to the port side, you ready your AK and head toward the point where the pilot went down. You only saw the one seat, so you figure the gunner must have bit it. The mi-28 spun until it cracked in half, shearing off the rotors, the craft plunging into the cold Mediterranean.

You have to take a few detours around sections to get there. Large holes extend down several decks, compliments of the rocket and missile barrage.

"Can you give me any information here?" You ask Kiara as you sneak forward uneasily. Completely deaf, you're having to rely on your eyesight, which is highly unnerving.

    "Stay low, I'll go check."

You watch as she flits away from beside you, hovering above the deck and peering around. You can tell she's searching, her vibrant eyes scanning, until all at once she stops moving.

"I'm not sure what I'm looking at..."

"Huh? Did he set some kind of trap?"

"You... Might want to see this, mortal..."

Figuring if she thinks its safe enough for you to get up to her, it probably is, you break into a dash. It only takes a minute to reach the crash site, though you still make a point to check your corners in case.

You arrive from the rear, looking at the back of the rather impressive ejection seat, its parachute blowing in the wind behind it.

Kiara is standing in front, looking solemnly down at the pilot.

AK poised at your shoulder, ready to shoot the man if you have to, you side step around, muzzle trained on his...

"What the...." You gape, lowering the weapon slightly.

The pilot, or what is left of him, hardly even appears human. His head is a mass of wires and metal, covering most of his scalp. Several wires appear to be connected to the seat itself, more still seem as though they were snapped, frayed ends hanging limp. Everything above his eyes is obscured by a bulky metal plate of some kind, which seems to curve around the top front half of his head.

The sight is beyond bizarre, and woefully unnerving.

He's breathing, though each breath is a ragged, rattling affair. You see why, a large piece of metal protruding from the right side of his chest, likely through a lung.

    "The fuck is this?"

"I... Don't know." Kiara shakes her head.

The pilot spasms for a moment; blood oozing from his mouth, before slowing to a still, his chin coming to rest on the front of his flight suit.

Despite the fact that whatever this thing is tried to waste you with an attack helicopter, you're still human. Kneeling down in front of the chair, you reach out and check for vitals, but find nothing.

It takes a moment to remove the steel plate, which required twisting two bolts connected at the man's temples. You slide the device away and notice the inside is black, but its satin finish almost seems like a computer screen to you. Setting it aside and looking back at the corpse, you reach out and slowly close the lifeless eyes.

"Don't suppose you can read his mind after its dead, can you?" You ask, turning toward Kiara.

Kiara just continues to stare, which you take for a no.

You start to give the corpse and the chair as through an inspection as you have time to afford. The wires all either connect to the chair or end, frayed. You don't know what you're looking at, and you aren't quite sure if you want to, feeling a bit disturbed.

Instead, you start to give the seat a more close inspection, gazing until you spot something quite telling.

A small, platinum box, nestled into the rear of the seat.

Figuring the pilot no longer needs his gloves, you borrow them so you can wrench the box out of it's container. Though when you attempt to pull it out, you realize it's connected by its own set of wires, right to the chair.

    "This... This is fucked up..."

    "A soul."

"Got to be." You rest the box back down, unsure of what to do.

Well there's probably an enhanced HUD of some sort, maybe with a direct feed from some of the helo systems and some magic tracking shit. It seems a bit involved just to make a really good pilot, but maybe the Order has the souls to spare.
I would think that any active magic use would be fairly limited, since the body doesn't seem very mobile.

You remember that feeling, when you were a little kid banging your head against the wall, that surfaced with the understanding of WHY 1+1 is 2?

I haven't had that feeling with any of this. My head hurts from all the times I've dropped my face to my desk in defeat and bitter tears.

I'm just going to keep going until I have fully modeled, rigged Kiara and Last. I might not understand how any of this works, but "monkey writing Shakespeare"-method could provide results at some point.

Reaching back out, you struggle for a few minutes before managing to separate the box from the chair. This you carry carefully out from your body, making sure not to touch it. Though the walk back down to your quarters isn't easy with all of the damage done to the ship, you have stuff in that bag that you need.

Namely, the other contained soul that you took off of the hunter in Libya.

You'd wrapped it in some cloth, and you repeat the procedure with this new box and a bed sheet.

"What do you think they were doing with it?"

"How would I know?" Kiara asks, frowning at you from her position, floating above you.

"Right..." You hoist the duffel and look around.

"We need to get off of this boat."

Heading back out of your room, you start the search for any crew left alive. Unfortunately for the ones below decks, one of the missiles impacted right above them, showing them with debris and shrapnel. The crew in the bridge... Well... 30mm doesn't leave much of a trace.

"Guess its just us." You shake your head.

    "Nothing we could do."
    >> Papa-N !!z0ABcqUnNAP 04/09/12(Mon)19:00 No.18643213
"I know. Again, we've got to get off this boat."

The ship is really starting to list now, and you take a guess that there's damage below or at the waterline and she's taking in sea. Her big engines are no longer running, and it doesn't take a naval expert to know that the ship is going to drift around until capsizing.

"Can you magic up the BMW? Drive it underwater maybe?"

    "I... Probably?" Kiara shrugs.

A few minutes later, and you're poised overlooking the water, motorcycle beside you.

"I hope this works, I don't fancy walking the rest of the way to Italy..."

You dive off and into the water, which rushes up around you as you sink down with the BMW. The seafloor is several hundred, perhaps thousand feet below, meaning you've got a few minutes before you reach it. Even then, its going to likely be several hours until you can hit the coast.

I remember her saying that the ocean was a good source of magic, but does it do anything to shield stuff under it? Also ask if she has any idea whether the souls can be tracked.
We should probably just head for the closest land, and go the rest of the way without magic, unless the ocean really does help us here. If the souls are trackable, we should probably find an empty place somewhere to deal with them quickly, whatever we come up with for that.

    Surface away from a city.

Talk to kiara about the souls in the boxes and suggestions as to what we should do with them.

I will admit, I never expected to be riding a BMW underwater, headed to Pompeii with a witch's soul and mind by my side, my life has taken some seriously odd turns these past weeks.

Surface at the closest land, we don't want to be leaving a trail of magic behind us, avoid population centers when surfacing, we don't want any stories about the drowned BMW rider returning to the surface to circulate.

Talk to Kiara about the Soul Boxes, what we can do with them and how to free them in a less violent manner than them exploding and what we're actually looking for in Pompeii.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/12(Mon)19:15 No.18643399
So I'd say the odds that they can track the boxes are pretty good. Doesn't even have to be magic, just a GPS thinger would do it.

We should focus on figuring a way to open these things up and get the souls out without getting incinerated.
    >> Papa-N !!z0ABcqUnNAP 04/09/12(Mon)19:25 No.18643512
"So... Are we hidden under all this water? Are we being tracked because of these metal boxes? How did I end up with a witch who can make a motorcycle function underwater?" You notice the light fading as you sink deeper and deeper.

    "I've no idea."

"Wonderful. Glad you're a wealth of knowledge."

Kiara sighs, coming even with your face despite the fact that she's sinking head-first.

"We could possibly be hidden, the ocean is a vast place and likely not too monitored for signs of magic. As for the containers... I'm not sure, and without opening one, there likely isn't any way to be sure."

At long last you finally reach the bottom of the ocean, a vast expanse of lifeless sand, too dark for you to see. Somehow, though, you manage to get the bike's lights to switch on.

"Now for a bit of propulsion..." Kiara spins her finger, and the tires begin to spin quite rapidly. You hold on as the speed increases, until you're actually riding a motorcycle along the bottom of the sea.

"This is so wrong. Fun! But wrong." You snicker at how weird this situation is.

"We're a ways from land yet, mortal. We'll surface away from cities to avoid being spotted, but if the boxes are somehow tracked, we should surface close to Pompeii to avoid setting off more detectors."

"Seems like a good plan. Have you come up with any ideas on how to get them out of these boxes?"

"And keep them intact? No... The only thing I could do would be to absorb them, consume their power. Souls by themselves have no conception of pain, or capability to think... They wouldn't even know..."

"We'll worry about that after we reach land." You look ahead at the darkness beyond your headlights, wondering just how long that's going to take.
    >> Papa-N !!z0ABcqUnNAP 04/09/12(Mon)19:29 No.18643548
"Anyways, what do you think we'll find in Pompeii?"

"Specifically? I haven't a clue. Whatever it is, though, mortal... They certainly didn't want it to ever be found again." Kiara leans back, which bends you forwards. She'd elected to ride facing backwards.

"Some kind of lost treasure? Magical sandals?"

"Treasure is unlikely, why go to such lengths to bury treasure? No, mortal, I doubt it will be as light as treasure."

"A man can dream..." You laugh.

When you finally make it to the shallows, you abandon the bike long enough to surface and look around. You picked a spot of shore that was a bit away from it all, which also meant out of sight.

The BMW leaks water for several minutes as you ride it up the beach, Kiara powering it along until it dries out. She seems to think that when the water drains, it will be fine. If it isn't, she told you to abandon it.

"You are heartless..." You frown, hugging the motorcycle.

After a few minutes of off-roading to make it to the road, you're back on pavement and back up to speed.

It took you more than ten hours to make it here from where you last saw the ship. A more boring ride you can't recall. Once you got past the fact that you were on the bottom of the ocean, you realized you were still moving like you were underwater.

    "Birds." Kiara points out.

Sure enough, beside the road, a group of thirty or so seagulls.

"I hate seaguls... You scowl at the winged rats.

"I could do as discussed earlier, spread them around with a bit of magic irradiation..." Kiara tells you.

"But they would know we're in Italy, then..." You shake your head.

"Which they might anyways, what with my own radiation and potentially these boxes.

    "Ah, point.." You nod.

If you do, just recover from those, if you don't go make some as soon as possible.
Hard drives ALWAYS fail at some point, so they're essential for anyone who wants to keep their data from being lost.

If you don't have backups and you cant get the data after going to a computer shop the best recommendation i could give is to take it to one of those places that recovers data from hard drives, but it'd probably be expensive.
