    Previous Threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Uraemrys

You are Uraemrys, the Abdal. God of Judgement and god of knowledge. Beholder of Truth and Grasper of the Infinite.

You and four other gods have recently created a brand new universe. Thus far this universe has a single planet that holds life. This planet is Apotheosi, that which brings the ascent, named for the intentions each of the gods have for its denizens: Ascending to the brightest hights of morality, to morality's darkest depths, to the greatest beauty, to the most perfect enlightenment, or to the most epic of legends.

    22PC, 22 years post-creation.

The dragon Elkot has granted Ur and Mae access to your pillar of knowledge. In the center of the desert they work to extract secrets from it: Ur attempts to unravel the secrets of ressurective necromancy, Apotheosi's geography, and written language, while Mae hope to gain understanding of her race and their place in the world. Elkot watches them them interest, hoping they succeed in their endeavors as much as they do, for from their study he lusts to gain.

Near the edge of the desert. Fifteen drakfey and one human embark towards the dry land's heart. The drakfey move in unsteady shambles in front of the human.

The human is Falees, and the drakfey are a troop of his zombie minions. While he isn't present, you can feel the aura of a demon always hovering near the necromancer.
    >> Apotheos !!kGkr8vB/r+N 02/19/12(Sun)14:15 No.18015053
In other lands, the southern continent, a new breed of drakfey is born. He is slightly smaller than average, and his proportions make him seem more agile and less brutish than his kin. He is the first dragonborn drakfey. The fey mothers is abhorred by the sight of her offspring, you have little doubt the fey harbors great animosity towards drakfey seeing as it is the drakfey that she and so many other fey and humans now flee from.

Several ideas toss around in your mind. As you try to decide if there are any particular actions you would like to take, or if it would be better to wait and see how things progress.

    Fuck yeah, Deity Quest!

If Falees' arrival at the obelisk is imminent we should watch what transpires there. Otherwise, see what happens to the dragonborn.

    >> Apotheos !!kGkr8vB/r+N 02/19/12(Sun)14:26 No.18015143
You attempt to see what Ius and Picus are doing. Ius is currently observing a unotable human in a village somewere, he seems to enjoys doing this. Picus does nothing but watch the world for now. It is difficult to say for sure, but he seems to be interested in the same events you are right now.

Falees will not arrive at the obelisk for at least a week.

The dragonborn isn't doing anything interesting as it is hardly even sapient as of now, being newborn. The mother is asking for advise or maybe console from those she travels with.

Let some time pass. Watch Ur and Mae and when Falees arrives definitely watch the events that occur.

During the last thread we discussed getting another champion, one who was more evil leaning seeing as we are a neutral god and Ur is very much good. Perhaps we could look into making the dragonborn this guy?

I feel like we should do something for this child and his mother, perhaps some sort of blessing we could impart. He's destined to inherit the mind of a fey, but all they can really see right now is a young destroyer.

We should still be on the look out for any interesting souls that enter the after life, I believe our original plan was to identify these to our fellow gods when they come by so that they could claim them as champions if they wanted.

Aside from that, let's take a look at the dragon currently ruling the drakfey by the red river, I don't think we've paid much attention to him. If the other archdragon is any indication he could be up to some very interesting things.
    >>18015123
We told him, but I don't think he's aware of the subtle differences between the normal drakfey and the dragonborn drakfey.

True, it just happens that evil people are less likely to seek knowledge without selfish intent. If we found some kind of chaotic evil guy who happened to be as dedicated to learning and spreading knowledge as Ur, we'd easily extend our favor to him as well.

Also, didn't we decide that it would still be possible to attain lichdom through alternative means even if we didn't grant it, via advanced necromancy? The idea was that anyone who dedicated the many years of study required to figure out how to do it was deserving of such.

I think we decided that Ur was to be the first and last lich we personally uplifted - that all future liches would have to do it on their own, likely using information gleaned by studying Ur himself to do so. Ur may be our champion, but he is also one of the many hints and clues that we so love spreading around. Nothing that we've done in the world has only one intended purpose. Nothing.
    >> Apotheos !!kGkr8vB/r+N 02/19/12(Sun)14:59 No.18015495
You decide that if you had wanted to give the dragonborn a unique appearance, you should have done so before it was born seeing as you were given sole right to its creation. Still, you do now wish to mark it.

"Your right," Sarma states. You called her to handle the situation for you, thinking she would enjoy the chance to modify the creatures look. "This creature is a scholar of the highest calling compared to a normal drakfey, or at least it will be. It deserves something to mark it as a creature of though, not of force." She looks at you and smiles, "A creature of knowledge."

The infants scales shimmer from their usual red to a glimmering black like obsidian.

"That should do." she says before departing.

Seven days later he is clearly visible on the horizon to those by the obelisk, with three towering sandworm zombies, one of which he has mounted, and two drakfey.

"Its the zombie lord. I saw him often when I stayed in the south-east mountains. I do not beleive he is the kind you should grant entry." Says Mae.

"We are going to have to defend the obelisk." Ur states, "I have spoken with him, and Mae is right. That he brings an army with him casts doubt on the possibility that he has changed."

"I shall be the judge, as I was appointed to be by your god." Says Elkot.

Ur shakes his head, "No. The sandworms could not have been slain by the drakfey, they are too agile and large. To have killed them he must have used magic. If he is capable of ripping the soul from a sandworm he may be capable of doing the same to you, dragon."

Elkot looks down on Ur, "Then what do you suppose we do, lich?"

Ur pauses a moment before responding. "He cannot take my soul so easily. The first thing I did when I learned how to grab the soul of another was figure out how to stop one from doing the same to me. However, I do not stand a chance against three sandworms by myself..." Bringing him back once was fine; bringing him back an infinite number of times is kind of stacking things in our favor, and we are supposed to be fair and unbiased. We even warned Ur when we first sent him back that other magic would be capable of unmaking him.

Also, in the event that Elkot dies during the events which are about to transpire, how shall we deal with him in the afterlife? Given his agreement to act as guardian of the obelisk, should we offer him the option of choosing whether to go to our afterlife, or Picus's?

Mae chimes in, "Ur, could you do the same for anothers soul that you would do for your own to prevent it from being stolen?"

He responds, "Yes, but it would require concentration. I would not be able to act while doing so, which would leave my own soul vulnerable."

"Why do the sandworms move above ground? Aside from the one Falees rides they should all be below." Elkot asks.

"He doesn't want to break line of sight," Ur explains. "It is harder to control the soul of something you cannot see, the same goes for souls of your own creation."

    Elkot nods.

Falees gains ground quickly, for the sandworms move fast on this terrain.

Ur speaks, " I'll ride you. Stay high in altitude and he wont be able to see me. Not only will this make it difficult for him to target me, but it will make it unlikely he will even be aware that I am present as the sight of you descending upon him mysteriously protected from his primary form of attack should be sufficiently distracting. Fly over him and scortch his zombie minions with your breath, as you are doing so I will leap from your back. He will make them submerge to extinguish the flames. I will then engage him, occupying him in such a manner that he will likely be unable to reach out to the submerged worms to resurface and unlikely to target you though my protection would be lifted. You will then flee, and I will duel him."

"I don't want to 'flee'" Elkot states.

"What do I do?" Mae asks.

"Nothing, you cannot help in this fight. Stay here." Ur responds, "And Elkot, if you don't want to flee than don't, to be honest I am not even sure Falees is a threat to you I'd just rather not risk having to fight a zombie dragon along with everything else."

You know, if we finally get to giving each god a champion we could set certain conditions that apply to all of the champions.

For example, one such condition could be that if a new champion is not selected and the old champion still wishes to live, the champion will eventually rise in the place where they died after a great deal of time passes. Let's say, anywhere from a few decades to a few centuries?

Would be a good way to keep Ur in the game, if he falls here.

*A* chance. The fact that he came here shows that he is at least willing to make an effort to learn on his own, which is a step, however small, in the right direction.

Allow him to approach and deal with Elkot. But let it be known that should Falees try anything funny, he will be taken care of accordingly.

We cannot simply stop him because he is "evil" or "dangerous". If he seeks knowledge, no matter the reason, he is welcome to it. as is everyone else in the world.

"You dont need to take up this much room, no one is going to miss all the details that go into your FORMLESS form, Formless." Sarma says, annoyed.

Formless grumbles something and shifts to a smaller scale.

All the gods are sitting on your moon, watching the events to transpire. A few obsidian hands float around holding bowls with various snacks, such as golden popcorn on obsidian fire.

    Ur climbs onto Elkot's back.

"I am pained to see one of my dragons is already allowing themselves to be mounted, it is a subservient position I would not expect one such pride to allow themselves into." Says Picus.

"I think the existence of that dragon-born drakfey shows that there was already precedent" Responds Formless, who is then glared at by all present.

Falees sees the dragon rise from the ocean of sand, and makes the worm he rides lower so as to dismount it. The worms group in front of him, as though to shield. The drakfey stand around awaiting commands.

Ur clings to a spine-like protrusion on Elkots back, trying to stay prone so as to minimize risk of being seen.

As Elkot nears, Falees closes his eyes to focus on his magic. You can see tendrils of necrotic power extending from him, probing in every direction for souls and awaiting one he wills to grasp and destroy.

A full minute later Elkot has come within range.

Falees attemtps to grab Elkot's soul and rip it from his body. But their pull is suddenly countered by an opposing force, for you can see simular tendrils of power extending now from Ur.

    Falees' eyes open wide.

Elkot opens his maw wide, and it fills with the inferno of Picus. Falees recovers from his suprise and rips the souls from the two nearby drakfey. Using these souls he forms a dome around himself which the quickly proceeding magical fire fails to penetrate. The worms, however, have no such protection and are lit aflame. Falees reacts to this by sending one of them below ground. The other two he rips the souls from and fires them as ammunition towards Elkot.

The souls fly right through Elkot's mighty scales and into his own soul. You see Elkot's soul warp under the blow, nearly tearing from his body which begins to fall as Elkot seems stunned.

Already finished falling is Ur. He impacts the ground silently, slowing his descent at the last second with arcane magic. Falees has yet to notice him.

"Falees!" Ur shouts, "I give you this one chance to show your fealty to my god. I am Ur, the first: The first lich, the first to see the eternal world which enwrapes our own, the first to use magic not engrained in my blood, the first wanderer, the first teacher, the first student, the first to traverse continents without the aid of flight or gills, the first to reach the obelisk of Uraemrys for its intended purpose, and by Uraemrys I shall be the first to show you to all of existence to be the pretender to true power and all which has value that you are. Show you do not value pride or power by surrendering to me and casting away the demon who is your tutor, or be the first to be destroyed by me."

"He should have seized the suprise." Picus comments.

"It was noble to give his opponant a chance to face him, I like this one." Ius retorts.

"And whith what will you destroy me?" Falees asks, "You have no weapon, can you even punch with those flesh-less hands of yours? I am your superior in necromancy, you cannot deny this. And you show yourself to be aware that I also have access to powers you do not. Will you kill me by falling slowly? The only corpses here are my corpses. I control the drakfey, I control the worms, and soon Ill control your dragon freind" As he finishes the drakfey begin to rise again, with new souls imbued. You can also see a pool of soul beginning to build within one of the worms. Elkot has landed around half a mile away. His body is damaged greatly by the crash, and his soul is only very slowly repairing itself.

"Technically your forgetting to count me." Says Ur, "And you show the weakness of your power by assuming I need corpses to make undead."

Ur focuses, and six souls begin to form around him. They have no vessel, but rather exist on their own, ghosts.

The ghosts fly towards Falees, who in panick attempts to withdraw the souls from the drakfey again to form a sheild. He is too slow, however, and the ghost begin to rip at his soul. With no other choice, Falees begins channeling his own soul into a shield. You can see his life-force slowly disappearing to fuel a shield that only barely keeps the raging ghosts at bay.

Despite his horrible predicament, Falees manages the presence of mind to send a command to the burried sandworm that still has a soul.

The sand below Ur begins to sink slightly, he looks down just in time to see a great maw appear below him. He is unable to react quickly enough to prevent being swallowed whole. Being a skeleton, this is unlikely to kill Ur. But it still renders him nearly helpless.

You see a spirit of black fire erupt near Falees' ear.

"Now things get really interesting..." Picus mutters.

You can hear the demon whisper, "What is wrong Falees? Having trouble destroying the ghosts when you are channeling your own soul, killing yourself to stay alive? Perhaps if you had a outside force... or more power...."

"I can't die! Take what you will demon, but don't let me die!"

    "Anything? I choose.... You."

The ghosts cry out moments before they are vanquished.

Falees glances around for Ur, and when he sees the worm laying on its side he begins to laugh. His laugh is interrupted by his own cry of pain. He falls to his knees as a massive spirit of void fire appears above him and begins flowing into his open mouth.

A new combatant enters the field. Mae in the form of a small sandworm. She is allready very near the zombie sandworm when the demon appears, and when she reaches it she burrows into its dead flesh. It takes about ten seconds for her to find Ur, and about five more for him to crawl out of the hole she makes for him.

When Ur emerges he sees the massive soul of black fire pouring into Falees' body, which is locked in a silent scream. Ur pauses only a moment before he focuses another ghost into existence, than another than another. He takes the ghosts and slams their souls into a single force, which he fires through the stream connecting the demon to Falees. The Demons vulnerable soul is ripped, with about a quarter trapped within Falees and the rest hovering incomplete above him. And shifts chaotically, and a presence which is disconcerting even to a god emanates from its incomprehensible cries of suffering.

"What did that do?" Sarma asks.

"Normally a soul cannot be destroyed without ultra-powerful necromancy not wielded by either of these, I guess when the demon started channeling himself into the mortal it made itself vulnerable... But a demons soul is far greater than a mortals, even severed it may be able to exist on as a incomplete being." You explain.

"Did the lich do that because he thought it was tactical? or was it pitty..." Ius wanders.

Picus tilts his head in interest. Formless is practically jumping up and down with excitement.

The incomplete soul of void fire lets out a eldritch roar and begins to take the form of a great dragonlike beast. Ur backs up, uncertain.

Falees is alive, but in his soul you see great chaos as the new demonic addition blends with the depleted soul of Falees.

"Thank you Mae, but you need to run now." Ur says without taking his eyes off the demon. She burrows back into the ground, but you can see that she doesn't actually retreat.

Ur attempts to grab the demon soul, but it proves laughably ineffective. The demon is now in the form of a dragon of black fire, and launches forward. Ur suddenly summons a few more ghosts, and rolls to the side while sweeping them around him.

The demon halts, confused. It seems it is incapable of distinguishing between the souls. It begins destroying them as fast as Ur can create them, but it is simple logic that eventually it will hit the real Ur, and you are not sure he could survive such a blow.

The the shadow of a dragon falls over the demonic dragon. A pillar of fire descends from the sky upon the fiend, a pillar that does seem to hurt it some.

The demon roars in frustration, now having two targets. Ur backs up and attempts to hold the demon again, hoping the fire will have weakend its resistance.

It works, the demon is held by necrotic energy. But the magic holding him is greater than Ur alone should be able to conjure. You see power extending from a now standing Falees.

The demon stuggles against the binds of the two necromancers. It seems as though it will break free, but then Elkot lands before it and delivers another stream of fire into its shifting form. This seems effective at weakening it ever so slightly more, but it regenerates constantly.

"Keep doing that till it dies." Falees speaks in a surprisingly loud and powerful version of his voice.

"It isnt as easy as exhaling," Elkot says while gasping for breath, "It is magic, I cant keep it up forever, and this thing doesn't seem near death."

"We cannot hold it forever either." Ur mutters. "We need to seal it somehow. Not a corpse, it could fight inside a corpse, a inanimate object."

"No object could hold it, the object would have to be magic in and of itself." Falees says as though it were elementary.

Ur prays to you. He asks that you bless an item on the field to hold the demon captive. You may either do so or let them figure somthing else out, if they can. If you do bless an item, your options are: Ur's cloack, Ur's staff, one of the drakfey's spears, or one of Falees' shamanistic trinkets he wears.

I'd say the safest of those options would be Ur's staff since we're unsure whether Falees has truly reformed. We could put it into one of Falees' amulets if we're okay with him at this point.

In any case, we probably should take some action here.

We should give it to Falees, and give Falees to Picus, we have Ur, we need to even the scales a bit, start giving avatars to the other gods.

We cant give everything to Ur, he is ours, but we are are the middle ground, and we need to build favors with the other gods as much as we need an epic champion.

Now that it seems the fight has begun winding down, let's start deciding on what we're going to do immediately after it.

We called the gods together to watch this battle, a momentous event in the history of Apotheosi, yes. However, as someone has pointed out already, nothing we do ever has only one purpose.

After the fight ends, let's deal with the matter of champions that we've been putting off for so long. This battle is a demonstration of the achievements of our won champion Ur, for the benefit of the other gods. We should inform them of the long-neglected fact that they are free to create their own champions, if they aren't aware of such already. Such was the agreement when we first revived Ur.

It is possible for them to select a suitable champion out of the souls we send to them, to return to the world in a different form as agents of their god. Selecting a living mortal is also a possible option. We will allow the other gods to act at their own discretion concerning such matter, but we are always open to give advice in such matter if they request it.

This may also be a good point to set down whatever special qualities champions would have, such as the "one-century revival" thing mentioned previously.

You look at the gods staring at you.

Picus makes eye contact with you and shrugs.

You don't want the demon to be easily freed, but don't want to burden Ur or give it all to Falees.

A bolt of black lightning strikes the demon from the sky. The demons soul is suddenly split. One of Falees' trinkets and Ur's staff both glow with black energy, and both Ur and Falees fling the half they have control of into to object on the others person.

    . . .

The battlefield is finaly calm. At least visually. Within Falees' body you see a soul in turmoil.

Ius speaks, "It seems we have another incident of a new creature. Picus, I beleive you have primary rights to its creation."

Picus nods, "I would like to hear your suggestions though, I did not expect this to happen in this exact manner."

But it is not merely babysitting. Nothing we do has only one objective remember?

If the other gods possess a champion, that champion becomes the most reliable instrument of their divine will in the world.

In other words, it makes their plans and actions far more visible. Such information is of great benefit to us. Of course, we will not make the opposite mistake of focusing only on the champions. Picus, for example, is certainly crafty enough to see through such a thing. No, we will keep in mind the benefit of the champions' existence to ourself, but we will also observe less obvious events as well.

We don't necessarily want EVERYTHING to be taken from bits of existing lore. Ideally we should have our own original twist to things. The fey in this quest, for example, are not so much immortal fairies as long-lived shapeshifters. Natural and not supernatural.

Blood may well be used in some form of ritual by warlocks to achieve long life and even immortality, but normal blood shouldn't have enough nutrition or soul energy or whatever to sustain them.

Besides, we already made it so that the warlocks can use their own souls as a power source for magic. Giving them the bloodsucking thing seems like we're starting to just lump random things together.

I am the combination of Mephisto and Falees, and shall now be called Mephistopheles. As for the intent of your question I beleive I will depart. My priorities have undergone a significant shift all of a sudden..."

    One of the worms animates.

"Was being swallowed painful Ur?" He asks.

"I don't feel pain." He answers.

"Ah, well I need to get out of the desert without the sun rising on me somehow... and there still seems to be a supply of blood in it..." Mephistopheles says mostly to himself.

Elkot places a claw upon the just starting to move worm, pegging it down. "I don't think it is that simple, Falees, you nearly killed me."

Mephistopheles rolls his eyes and takes the talisman holding half the demons soul in his hand. "I could finish the job right now."

"Last I checked we were kicking your ass." Elkot roars.

"Elkot, let him go. That we still have reason to fight is debatable, and it is unwise to engange in a fight we stand a chance of losing when we may not be gaining anything."

    Elkot growls before taking flight.

"I'm sure we will meet again." Mephistopheles cheers to Ur.

    Ur nods.

The worm swallows Mephistopheles and burrows into the ground.

    Mephistopheles? Really?

The wheel of fate begins its turn here. The eternal cycle of battle between the lich, the faequeen and the vampire begins here.

This is surprisingly more awesome than I thought it would be and I had high expectations.

It bares repeating-best damn quest ever. We're watching what will later be mythology unfold before our eyes; once we know more I would love to run a campaign in this setting several thousand years after what we're seeing

Thank you for giving me something to write about in my College Writing course.

Also, this quest reminds me of....
