    PREVIOUSLY, ON METAHUMAN RENAISSANCE:
Dan had IHOP with the Evokers' Club and Roxane, and learned more about Outsiders, and how he doesn't want to learn more about them. After that, he decided to take up Free-Running, and was found to be very good at it. Then he went for his meeting with Professor Blackstone, and we wizard now son.

(Sheet hasn't changed since late thread, so you'll have to go there to see it for now)

You drink your beer with Prof Blackstone, who you have a sudden urge to call 'Boss'. He muses into his mug "Guess I can teach you some basic theory, then. You're the researching type, I can tell, Alice, but I'd best make sure you don't blow yourself up." Right, well, if he wont stop calling you 'Alice' you're gonna have to call him 'Boss' or 'Chief' or something.

"Magic can be divided a lot of different ways. Some do it the Elder Scrolls way, some do it the DnD way, others make up their own divisions. I learned it pretty simple. There's Rituals and Hedge Magic, which anybody can learn, and there's Flashy Stuff, or evocation, which only a Magister could use. The divisions are mostly arbitrary, a tool people use to wrap their mind around magic. So, you feel free to raise whatever divisions you need to stay sane and organized." He reaches under his desk again (Jesus, what all does he have down there? Does he get Starbucks?) and pulls out a brown leather satchel, which looks a little beat-up, and places it together with your new ritual book. "Here, a Ritual Kit. One of my old ones before I needed to start carrying a bigger bag." You take the satchel and examine it, finding a couple lumps of chalk, a small copper bowl, a handful of incense sticks and a cone-shaped package powdered incense, an old combat knife, and a lighter. "These are your basics. Expand and alter the kit as you need. Ritual work is easy, mostly works on magic circle theory. I will teach you the most basic trick in the book."

He makes demonstrating gestures with his hand as he talks. "Easiest thing in the world, and the first thing everyone in Esoterics learns, is the protective circle. Just draw a circle. Chalk is the easiest way, but if you've got soft enough ground you can draw it with your foot. Clasp your hands, and put a bit of effort, of Will, into it. You had powers already, so I'm sure you can do that. This closes the circle, preventing magical energies from penetrating it." He brushes the chalk circle he just drew on his desk off, then continues. "Careful now, this only works for magic. A lead pipe will cross the plane of the circle just as easy as if it wasn't there. Same with mundane flames."

"Yep. All the other rituals involve the circle as a base. The more power you're focusing, either the bigger area you need, or the more complex the circle array is. Most stuff, a circle big enough for you to stand in comfortably, with a five-point star inside will be a sufficient focus. Most rituals in books will include array sketches, though."

"But I can already make li-" He cuts you off with a gesture. "Yeah, sure, but if you screw this up, worst is we end up with some spots in our vision." You nod, and resume your listening mode. "Basically, all spontaneous spellcasting can be broken down into three steps. First, you draw on the power. Most of us Magisters do this instinctively. Since you were Awakened, you should also be able to feel the power inside you." He holds up his right hand, like he's holding a ball or a cup. "Do as I do."

You mimic the gesture. "First, draw that energy, focus it in your hand." You comply, scrunching up your eyes at first, while you tug on the strand of energy inside you, somewhere. The power pools in your cupped hand, though your other extremities feel a bit numb. "Second, you need to shape it, give it form. In a fight, you'll have to do this fast, which is why most people throw fire or lightning, real easy to imagine. Try and envision a ball of light." Your practice with that psychoreactive sand yesterday helps. You draw on the image of light, and feel a tingling in your finger tips. "Last step, you release it, and give it power. Normally, this is done with the incantation. You speak the word or words, which helps your mind direct the shaped force. Some people doing big spells have long incantations." He looks down at his palm and mutters, "Lux." A little ball of light suddenly springs to life for a second, before he waves his hand a little, like shaking something off, and it disappears. "Never use your native language for this. Always use something you know enough to associate meaning with, but not enough that you'll be flashing every time you say "light" in the conversation. Now you try."

(You motherfuckers are so lucky I found an online translator for this)

You need a language you know enough about to spew out random nouns and verbs, but not well enough to speak conversationally. Cyrean is out then, since, y'know, imprinted in your brain. You decide to get Mesoamerican. It was dad's area of expertise after all. "Tlanextli." A ball of light fills your hand. Oh, and your stomach lurches for a second, and your fingers and toes go cold. Gees, he was not kidding about the "burning your essence thing. Suddenly Wisp doesn't seem so useless. Harry cocks an eyebrow at you. "Interesting. Most amateurs go for the classics; Latin, Greek, Ancient Egyptian. German and Old French are popular now, too." You dismiss the light, and sit down, then finish your beer in one go.

Blackstone hands you the summoning book. "Here, take this. Was written by a couple of Seekers under an alias a few years back. Very safe procedures inside. I'll give you one last tool of the trade. Magisters are supposed to know things. It means 'teacher' in Latin. So, if we don't know things, we need to keep up the mystique. So we outsource." He taps the book.

You've been a real help. Though," You pause, and lower your voice a little. "If you don't mind my asking, what's up with the-?" You gesture at the sword in the case.

Harry leans forward conspiratorially, and puts a finger to his lips while winking. "I'd appreciate if you didn't mention the significance to anyone. I once borrowed it from a nice lady to slay a dragon, and now I have to look after it until a True King has need of it again." You arch your eyebrows in surprise. "And the rest of it?" You inquire. He leans back a little, palms on his desk. "The Seekers have a very secure vault, deep under Londinium. We've been looking after that piece for a while now. They don't know about the sword, though."

While that's certainly not a deal I would scoff at, I wouldn't call it ideal either.

An ideal contract would be with a bro god who, in exchange for power, wants us to be good to people and help them out. One who wants us to improve ourselves to further that goal, and that wants to see us uplift other people in the process of uplifting ourselves.

I think THAT would be ideal.

    (+2 Willpower for History)
    (2x2, 2x4 and 2x8 on Research)

Your first hour of study involves the basics. You grab a couple Occult dictionaries, and start looking up some stuff. A little cross-referencing, and you have a rough idea of some definitions.

Spirits is a catch-all term for non-daemonic (and sometimes those guys too) entities which originate from planes of existence in this universe, other than Midgard/Mundus/Prime Material Plane. Most of them also reside in these other places, though some, like ghosts are anchored or can manifest in our world.

Old Gods is a term to describe entities worshiped by ancient cultures as deities. What exactly they were before that is unclear, but they seemed to have been very powerful, possibly abstract spirits, which latched onto human beliefs, which shaped them and made them more powerful. Maybe. Since they are powered and shaped by this belief those lacking major religions are dead or slumbering.

Elementals are spirits from that Spirit World, tied to elemental or primal forces of nature. Most of them seem to be anchored to the four traditional elements of the Greeks in their purest form, Air, Earth, Water and Fire, but you find multiple references to elementals of Ice, Lightning, Wood, Sand or more exotic ideas. There are similar spirits which are personifications of other ideas, but platonic animal spirits are a whole other bag.

Surprised, you tilt your head to see who it is in the corner of your eye, and find Anya fucking standing upside-down on the ceiling a couple inches from your head.

Instinct takes over, as you vault forward and combat roll over the desk you had piled your books on, landing securely on the floor opposite the table, your back to it. You shoot a dirty look over the edge of the table, relax the tension in your body that would turn into a violent extranormal assault. "The fuck!?" You say, whisper-shouting. Anya laughs. "You should see the look on your face." She says, as she points. Then she goes deadpan again. "Seriously, you should. Then you could describe it to me."

"I'm just investigating them, y'know, so I can know about that girl and hers." Which is true. That is ONE of the reasons you're doing this. "Bullshit." Says Anya, simply. You nod, and say "True enough."

"Well, as far as I understand it, pact take two forms. One is lasting, the other is instant." She again gestures at her blindfold. "I went with instant. One pair of eyes for its equivalent value in magical secrets. Lasting pacts are more permanent agreements. You give or do something to honor the deal repeatedly, or over time, and in return, it constantly provides you a service, usually granting power." She tries to put her elbows on the desk and clasp her fingers together, but is blocked by some of your books. "Magisters do instant deals all the time. Cast a good ole' Summon/Bind ritual and have a chat with whomsoever knows what you need to know." She grins at you, showing lots of white teeth. "Powerful magi can also make deals. Just like all those oaths and promises witches and wizards swear in the faerie stories."

Okay, this I have to correct. As far as you could tell you were in no way responsible for the club incident, specifically. They were firing wildly into crowds before you stepped in, and in fact, you probably saved more lives, since they stopped firing wildly at civilians, and started firing wildly at you.

She scoffs. "Yeah, that's what they all say. Lemme save you a couple hours worth of book learning. After all, it was this kind of research that led my 'friend' to me." She pauses for breath. Or drama. "Everyone always wants to dig up an Old God, for better or worse. I mean, who wouldn't want Jupiter or Odin or Ishtar watching your back. What they don't realize is most of them are taking a nap. And even the ones that aren't, they don't get out much. Assuming belief hasn't died off enough that the God has completely died or been absorbed by another being." She gestures at the library around you. "You wanna do that? You'll be here for a while. You'll need to track down the right God, find the right place, then you'll need to go way out somewhere to find whatever terrae incognitae or axis mundi leads to a place where that God dwells. Most of them didn't stay on Mundus," She uses the Latin term for the plane of this universe which humans are native to. "Then, assuming your God isn't dead, you're gonna have to wake it up with an appropriate tribute, and then negotiate with one. As far as I know." She skillfully slips in the qualifier. "So, its a bit hard then?" You observe. "More like tedious. There IS a reason I took a shortcut."

Anya clasps her hands joyfully. "Ah, the sort of question I love to answer. Let's see, let's see." She descends into thoughtful silence for a second. "Fae are always good for this kind of thing. They love making bargains, and unlike demons, do it for the sake of it, not to sow corruption, discord and pain. They can do that on their own time. Keep in mind they love to play the letter over the spirit, and will hold you to your end, no matter what, Seelie or Unseelie. So unless you want to be an end-table in Arcadia, watch yourself. Demons of course are quick with a deal, but they tend to run high cost," she gestures demonstratively, "And also that's illegal. And frowned upon by several organizations. Hate to see you nabbed and forcibly exercised by the Seekers or the Malleus Maleficarum."

"Elemental Spirits of Nature are cool, too. Fire, Water, Air, Earth, etc. Never spoken with one myself, but I understand they can be a bit... alien. The minor ones aren't even intelligent. Not even compared to animals, they just are. Also, their requirements can be unusual, to say the least. I heard of one guy who had to marry the Dryad he pacted with. And another woman could never be more than 2.3 miles from a body of water." Well, that sounds inconvenient. "Animal or Plant spirits too, and Platonic ideals. Different benefits, similar payment plans. Then there are more abstract spirits, representing concepts. Rage spirits, love spirits, tricksters. THOSE guys are weirder."

She pauses. "Oh, and a host of cultural spirits. But those are regional, because they're kind of attached to human beliefs. I understand there are a lot of low level Kami running around japan who could use a little TLC." She leans back in the chair. What works for you really depends on the circumstances. Clearly the lack of food is causing you to act a little more enthusiastically than your normal cool, calm self. "Slow down there, cowboy!" Says Anya, putting up her hands in a calming gesture. "You have to do some research first. Maybe narrow it down to one or two subjects, then try and find specific notes. There are some encyclopedias and dictionaries here for that kind of thing, I think. And the internet. But summoning always has a material cost, an offering to the summoned to make it want to come. And you need a name. "

"Look, I'm here to meet with Jeanne for lunch." She says. "Since you're kind of magic now, why don't you come along. Jeanne has done a whole lot more summoning than me. I don't like to draw circles because its hard to make sure everything is aligned when you can't see."

Okay, basically, an Avatar in Unknown Armies is a person who is so closely aligned to a certain platonic ideal, like The King or The Wanderer, that they get a few persistent abilities relating to that idea, like the King being able to issue a Command or the Wanderer being able to have a door lead to a completely different door somewhere else. They will also, though, have a certain taboo which means they get fucked over a bit if they violate it; for example, the King might lose some mojo from taking a direct order from someone, since HE is supposed to be the one in charge. The Adventurer might have things that allow him to bypass barriers and survive exotic environments. The taboo would probably be something like refusing to indulge in your curiosity, or something.

You follow Anya back to the lobby of Parapsychology, where Jeanne is waiting. She raises an eyebrow at you. "He wizard now, son." Says Anya, helpfully. Jeanne's eyebrow continues to arch. You suspect she could give Roxy a run for her money in that department. You open your mouth. Then close it, then open it again. "I was going to say 'long story', but actually it isn't that long. Not even really that complicated." "Good," says Jeanne "You can explain it to us over lunch, then." "Laserbeams here wants to make a pact." Says Anya, less helpfully. Jeanne stops short for a second, then shakes her head, as if to wave the bad thoughts away. "Fuck it, I'm hungry. I'll hear it at lunch." She says. She points a finger at you. "You're buying." Well, there goes your money for the week.

"Well, only you can truly decide what is best for you, since you are the only person up there," She points at your head. "But I can give some tips. Never worked much with abstract spirits or platonic ideals, Magisters prefer more general spirits for information gathering. Like Anya told you, you'll need to pay a spirit a tribute to come talk to you, and need a name to perform the summoning. But that's just book work. I guess you could run a couple summonings at once, talk to multiple spirits, but that seems kind of... less than mystical."

She and Anya then spend the next few minutes correlating some information with each other over a notepad while all three of you finish eating. "Alright," Anya says, passing the notepad over to Jeanne. "We know of three kinds of spirits that might be what you're looking for."

One scene transition later, you're back in the Librarium (Totally what its called), at the table you were at before. Jeanne pulls the summoning book out from under your arm, and hands it back to you. "You, read this. No point if you don't know what to do. You sit back, and learn about summoning. Specifically, a Summon/Bind ritual. Basically, you draw the magic circle, then apply a summoning array inside it, based on power. This is basically so the thing you summon can't go anywhere freely. The circle and the array aren't technically required, but are a much more practical and less hazardous route than, say, nine teeth shaped monoliths about half a mile apart in a triangle formation.

Once you've got an appropriate array, you need to place your offering, as appropriate to the spirit, in the circle. A Fire elemental, for example, likes some fresh coals, or a good dry log as a tribute. Then you focus your will, and speak the entity's name. They don't have to come when called, unless they are much weaker than you, thus the tribute as a material component. From there, the entity is essentially trapped in the array, until dismissed by you. Very powerful entities, like Sidhe Nobles, high ranking Demons and powerful elemental Spirits can leave themselves, if they so choose.

After a while, Jeanne and Anya return (How Anya finds books, you have no idea. A wizard did it, perhaps?) carrying a pile of various books on spirits, summoning and various obscure mythological figures.

After hitting the books, you have assembled some appropriate names, which you think will draw the Spirits you might need. Dike for Justice, Horme for Adventure, Vertias for Knowledge and Nerio for Courage. To take notes in some pages of your Ritual Book, along with a couple quick sketches of of some summoning arrays.

Now you need to decide on the material components, and acquire them.

You scribble down some notes. A book, or other repository of knowledge for Veritas. A dictionary, perhaps? Scales or weights for Dike, and a compass for Horme. You have some other ideas for"adventure" type things, but those are to complex. Or off-limits. You inherited that collection of Fedoras, dammit. You'll need to do some thinking for Courage. Maybe hit a couple books. Or you could get rid of the plush lion your last girlfriend got you. All these spirits are feminine aspects, so that might be an okay route.

This is now your secondary concern. Your primary concern is where the fuck you're going to draw four complex summoning circles which are about three feet across. And preferably in a contained space where you're not in the open and going to freak people out.

I was actually operating under the impression that was what you guys wanted to do. Considering if you're going to summon and unsummon and re-summon, you'll be expending a shitload of Willpower and material sacrifices.

Not particularly, but it would ruin the vibe

    Wait.
    Brilliant idea.
Why can't we use ALL FOUR OF THEM as our patrons? THAT WOULD BE HILARIOUS!

...not entirely unreasonable. We should probably ask Anya and Jeanne about it first though.

The plan is decided. You will find the summoning chambre deep within the Parapsychology building, draw up four summoning circles, and in a demonstration of your ARCANE MIGHT...

You'll conduct some sensible job interviews. Now to go rundown the components.

Tomorrow, we will finish up this pact business, and hopefully close the in-game Sunday. But not likely.

Also, I'm going to probably start the next one a bit earlier if I can, but also end it earlier. With an abrupt and unsatisifying conclusion if I have to. Got stuff to do, and all that.

What happened to the expedition anyway? Apart from unimaginable cosmic horrors.

Planning stages. Keep in mind, Dan had that idea yesterday morning. It will probably occur within the in-game week.

But also probably after COSMIC HORROR is resolved.

Well, like all games, combat bogs the story down a little.

But also we spend forever on little stuff, like conversations with NPCs, or tracking down pieces of information.

Will we need to ward against wanxes? That's what captcha is advising.
