This is the master list of things we'd like to have art for sooner or later. It's a lot. We didn't expect to have all of it done by first release by a longshot.

Not really, but most of that list needs accompanying text- it's for diplomacy portraits and event images. The idea is that there's a description and a list of options, and they'll be placed in some relatively open area of the image. Like, in pic related, the text box might be placed top left or bottom right.
We may end up just having text box be on the side, though, if it's too inconvenient.
Check around the writing section of the forums for an idea of how that works.

my worry is that this game will be impossible to 'win' because of all the negatives. I hope it will be possible to run a chapter, built it up to 10 companies, keep your genes pure, and keep going for a few thousand years.

Even in Dwarf fortress you could make a viable fortress if you didn't deliberately make it impossible for yourself. I mean for every artic aquifer embarkation in DF there were hundreds of temperate plains embarks, where you had time to build up and defend and make a fortress.

I hope devs focus on the mechanics that allow you to make a sucessful chapter, THEN add things to destroy them. Otherwise the path to being a correct and good chapter just won't exist or be able to be had!

We are aiming to have stability be possible. Not forever, of course, but for a long while. You can't win history.
The greentext stories should be assumed to be exceptional circumstances. Inquisitors personally visiting a chapter is generally pretty rare and most of them are fearfully polite about it. Most of the time you would just send your tithe to Mars, which lets you fudge the numbers a bit more. Alpha Legion are crazy rare, but ought to be very entertaining when they show up.
It's a management simulator. You'll be doing a relatively large amount of running your chapter and strategic command, and very little personal management of battles.

    God damn Orks.
I wish they let you send xenologists to reveal the Waaagh! strength of Ork groups so I wouldn't have to play Gargant build site whack-a-mole out of fear all the time.

If you haven't figured it out yet, that's what causes Waaagh!. Whenever orks start getting uppity at all, check around for Gargant sites. For each two sites in a subsector, the subsector's Waaagh! value doubles. If they already have a Grand Warlord and a Space Hulk, that brings their Waaagh! value over twelve and they start mobilizing. The Warlord and Hulk are much harder to find than the build sites, though, but they're just the base for the Gargant multiplier.

But what's worrying is when there's a stable Ork population, they're liable to have a Grand Warlord, a Warphead Prophet, an Upstart Boss, and a Space Hulk, so their Waaagh is at seven. At that point, if you let them get to two build sites, it's instant Waaagh!.

Since the cover has been blown in this thread already, might as well explain that the game is a work in progress based on the greentext. The greentext is not actual stories from the game. We keep doing greentext because it's a fun and easy way to brainstorm ideas to contribute to the final game. Or just because it's fun.

Generally, when it comes to Eldar in the higher difficulty settings, I find the best thing is just to ignore them. They tend to go away if you don't rise to their activities- though it can make you unpopular.

On the other hand, my Raven Guard successor guys in another save really got stuck into the craziness of fighting Craftworld Eldar. The amount of Bat Gambits, Xanatos routlettes and general fuckery has been amazing. I've had two stars go super-nova during the fights, and even a couple of times where they've helped me against another foe- Tyranids, then they didn't attack me after it'd ended.

I like to think there's a mutual military respect there...but that's probably all part of some big bullshit plan.

They seem to be dealt with easiest when it comes to Maiden Worlds because we know why they're attacking and what you. What's annoying are the times when they attack and you have NO IDEA why. More than half the time you never find out, and the other half of the time you wish you didn't know in the first place.

At least that's how it is with CE- but encounters with those cats is actually pretty sparse compared to Corsairs and DE. Mainly corsairs- DE tend to come and go before you can do anything about it.

Hey /tg/ working on a custom Chapter and was wondering about the Chapter Codex size of 1000 marines.
Do things like Librarians, Tech Marines and Chaplains count as part of the size limit?

No. The 1,000 "limit" is actually an estimate anyways. There could be five marines in the Scout Company, there could be fifty or five hundred. It's not like the chapter will stop recruiting in good times when its battle brothers aren't dying.
The Techmarines come under the Armory. This includes all techmarines, artificers, and tank drivers. There are practically enough of these to be their own company- in fact, the Ultramarines have Kronus, the "Spear of Macragge," who is effectively the Captain of their armory.
Note that bikes and land speeders are usually piloted by marines of the Tactical Reserve (Ultramarines 6th), not the Armory.

Librarians are in the Librarium. This includes all records and communications, not just psykers. Any chapter will also have a number of non-marine Astropaths and Nagivators in its librarium. How Black Templars cope with this is beyond me. Maybe their chapter serfs box them up in the cargo hold while the grown-ups are talking to the funny looking ones.

Chaplains are in the Reclusiam, if I recall. Apothecaries the Apothecarion.

There are additionally staffs devoted to the Fleet and to recruiting, but these are not always Marines. Many chapter admirals are serfs.

That would be an interesting way to handle Space Wolves and their successors in the game. The player gets a great company, and the system treats them as a mini-chapter, where your chapter master character is only as powerful as a captain, and your captain characters are as powerful as veteran sergeants, and instead of companies you have squads. To make up for it, you have eleven allied "chapters" who will all defend your shared homeworld if it is attacked and will usually support you.

It would take a lot more diplomacy. The same system would work for Black Templars...

So, it's been mentioned fairly often about the problems of the Inquisition challenging Chapters on their adherance to the Codex.
My position is that the Ultras and their successors cant be everywhere but the =][= pritty much can be. It's in the intrests of the Imperium for Chapters to follow the Codex to keep things from getting out of hand.
=][= maybe cant do much about your adherance to it in terms of structure or size but they can deffinitely call you out on it. Doing so brings the attention of people like the Ultras or Segmentum Command, or other people that just plain dont like you.
I'm thinking that one Cardinal that tried to call for a crusade against the Emperor's Nightmares would be a good example.
    >> Anonymous 11/09/11(Wed)02:41 No.16892496
    >>16892439
Codex adherence is a Astartes matter. The Inquisition has no real reason to do anything about it beyond personal inclination. The Astartes do as the Astartes do, and interfering in their business is a quick way to draw the ire of multiple chapters. The Imperium favors Codex adherent chapters, but won't muck about (or even care about for the most part) with all but the most deviant chapters, and those whose deviancy threatens the balance of power in the Imperium. So Chapter Neverreadthecodex, Givesnoshitforcompanyorganization, and the Whofuckingcaresaboutcodextactics are completely fine even if the Ultras don't invite them over for Emperormas, but Chapter Wantsamajorbattlefleet or Chapter Xenoartifactsohyes are in serious trouble.

And the Ultras are not the Codex police, despite what these stories say. They dislike and distrust those that do not adhere to it, but they won't launch an assault against a chapter for it.

A non-codex chapter will find a harder time of getting enough allies to 'pull a Badab'. Huron got away with it because the Claws were already in the Maelstrom Warders union of chapters, and he could call on the Executioners' oath.

The vast majority of chapters from second founding onwards are Codex chapters from Ultramarines stock, because the High Lords favor this.

But essentially, Imperial law operates in trial by combat. There are too many figures who are empowered as the Emperor's proxies- Governors, Inquisitors, and Chapter Masters among them. An Arbites Judge can call on the same authority, so can a Cardinal. Whenever figures of such power disagree, it comes down to who has more guns and bigger, and usually this means the Space Marines get left alone.
But an Inquisitor could always commandeer an Imperial army, or have chapters indebted to him to call upon. A Judge could levy a task force of Arbitrators from across the sector, and Arbitrators are some serious business. They have their own ships, too, apparently. A Cardinal can declare a War of Faith and suddenly Frateris Militia everywhere. A Chapter Master has his own chapter and that's enough. A Governor has the loyalty of his homeworld (one hopes) and a tremendous amount of wealth.

The Imperium stays stable because everyone has a gun to their head.
Or, actually, because nobody knows if there are guns on their head, or how many.

I know. Normally, that would be a warning sign for other chapters not to side with him, but he already had a ton of chapters oath bound to his.

    >They dislike and distrust those that do not adhere to it, but they won't launch an assault against a chapter for it.

Even then, they can be perfectly fine with you so long as you're polite enough to them and you have good reason.

In older BA codices, an Ultramarine is quoted saying that he thinks the Angels are more noble than them because they still manage to be pretty decent chaps even with their curse. The BA don't follow the codex to the letter because they have to accommodate for the black rage and red thirst.

Likewise, the Blood Ravens are known to have a shockingly high Librarian count as well as a tradition for making Librarians chapter masters and a history of mysterious SEKRETS. However, the Ultras are one of the few founders that treat them with some respect.

I'm sure if, for example, your chapter was based on a water world, the Ultras wouldn't have much problems with standard codex tactics taking the backseat to more naval orientated tactics.

Basically, despite what /tg/ usually says, the Ultramarines are reasonable, nice guys who happen to view the Codex as a holy document, as they should given that their primarch made the damn thing. /tg/ just hates them because of Ward. Which is wrong, given that he's hurt them pretty badly by overusing them so much, in my opinon.

Mockup of a possible display box for individuals using the various sprite sets we have.

Would likely never be used for anyone so lowly as a Squad Leader, but for Captains, Apothecaries, Techmarines, Chaplains etc. with alternate detailed parts and color schemes. Maybe in future versions you will be able to at least view every brother of the Chapter like this, though probably not interact with them.

The figure is based on an uncolored sprite with regions of color applied at transparency, in this case to two just two regions- the pauldron rims and the rest of the figure. An automated system might use several different coloring maps, allowing for halving, quartering, and so on. Perhaps even to the point of having each plate colored separately. Weapon sprites exist for most common marine weapons, although power fists and lightning claws need to be redone to apply over the figure's arms.

Continuing the discussion of Codex vs non, Chapter Serfs.
    http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Chapter_Serf
    >It is unlikely that the Chapter Serfs would ever be deployed in battle alongside their Space Marine masters, as their human limitations would be incapable of keeping pace. They would still be trained to levels at least equivalent to that of the Imperial Guard, expected to assist in the defense of chapter assets such as fortresses and vessels.

Unlikely but there's nothing outright against it? I've been curious about the idea of using Serfs to man Predator tanks.
    Pic unrelated.
