    Last time...

Surrounded by the bowing Skaven, you stared at the Grey Seer and the spot that the demon of smoke had stood. Your mind had trouble making sense of the whole situation, but you did your best to concentrate. After a long while of nothing happening, Suskeet began to stand and look up at you. Thrask, the Grey Seer- hurried over and gripped Suskeet by the hair, exposing his throat and pressing a knife tip against it.

"Shall I execute him for laying eyes on you, your Divinity...?" Thrask asked as Suskeet lay still.

    >Recap.

    >Ritakeet escaped the dangerous Dark elf camp only to make his way to a Skaven Settlement. Lead by a Skaven Deathrunner, they ventured inside and made their way down the complex walkways. The stone in Ritakeets pocket began to react to its surroundings, and shot free from his hand and burned in the fire. There, a demon manifested itself and made the Skaven bow to its will. The demon asked that they show the same respect they would show to their god, to Ritakeet. And so they bowed.

Nodding, Thrask replaced his knife and released him. As the Skaven began to rise, Thrask spoke again.

"What may we do to make your stay... more enjoyable? Your Divinity?" He asked in a nasally voice, bowing with each word.

"Y-yes of course! Only the finest for you my Lord... Come, Follow your servant if it would please you..."

Turning and walking past the now dying bonfire, he scurried to the other wall and passed through a small hole. As the Clanrats and other vermin made a path for you, everything was deathly quiet. Suskeet followed in suit, head bowed beneath his cloak. Eventually coming to a room lit by green fire, Thrask stopped. The room was massive and well kept, with all the amenities a Skaven could ever need.

"How does this suit his Divinity?"

    "What is it your Divinity...?"

    "I'm hungry."

You say plainly, remembering your hunger as the pain rippled through you.

    "O-of course your Divinity!"

Scurrying from the room he returned a bit later with the largest bounty your eyes had ever seen.

Meats, veggies, pies, meat pies, veggie pies, fruits, fruit pies, mini pies, cupcakes, cream cakes, butter cakes, bunt cakes, wine, wine battered fish, beer, beer battered pork, bread, and finally some slop that was probably something the Ogres cooked up.

Diving into the food you tore at it like you had never eaten in your life. They looked delicious, smelled even more delicious, and tasted the most delicious your little rat tongue had ever tasted. Sampling the fine products set before you, your meal was interrupted by a large clamor coming from outside your room, behind the Grey Seer. Shouting echoed down the hall and a green light shone coming from that direction.

Thrask looked nervous, and the guards refused to look in that direction. Even Suskeet remained silent and still, even near all the food.

"Be calm, Sir. I am here now." You say to Thrask, offering a small piece of buttered pie.

    But he did not move.

The clamor grew closer and a massive rat pushed through the doorway. He was wrapped around the neck with a massive iron chain. His neck was cut and bleeding from the pressure of it pushing against him. It roared in anger and twisted as the massive body managed to squeeze through the doorway. Its skin and fur were many different colors, and it smelled of death. The chain led to an old rat with a metal head and mechanical eye. It carried a small silver rod with a shiny on the end like yours. This rod pressed against the giant rat and made him move as jolts of green energy shot from it.

Yet behind it was something far worse.

A rat in heavy armor marched from he doorway. The red armor shone and glistened in the green flame as his one eyes canned the room. The left eye where one had been was nothing but a metal disc, the symbol of the Horned Rat carved into it. He carried a massive spear and butcher's knife. But all around his waist were far crueler weapons of war. All along his back were the heads of fallen enemies. Some, were fresh.

    No one spoke.

As he descended the floors, you followed diligently. Suskeet, ever watchful, walked silently behind you. After a long walk you finally arrived at a massive door. As Thrask pushed the door open he shouted and smiled at the view.

"May I present, my Lord, the Vermintide!"

Thousands of Skaven lay in feast along massive wooden tables. Their fangs and claws tore at food and drank wine and beer as small fights broke out. The sheer noise and smell was overpowering, but for the first time in your life you smelled it. The smell of home.

Slowly the crowd fell silent as eyes fell on you. Word traveled fast indeed, and they new the moment you entered the room who you were, and why you were here.

Two stormvermin, one with a serrated sword and shield, the other with a massive bardiche. One assassin with poisoned weapons stood behind you, as if coming out of the shadows itself. One Deathrunner marched forward, his unique weapons raised. Two Massive rats stepped from behind the Stormvermin. They were huge and scarred albino Skaven, each holding a Ratling gun under their arms.

And finally, adding to the six, marched Warlor Ulkauk. He added to the regiment of rats and stood with a smile on his face. Seven rats. They all claimed to be strong enough to honor the Great Horned One.

Without hesitation the Assassin leaped over your shoulders and buried his knives in the armored shoulders of the Stormvermin with the sword. Raising his shield he grabbed him and smashed him to the ground. Pinning him with his sheer weight, he raised his weapon and took the head off the assassin.

    One down.

Soon the circle was an explosive frenzy of bloodlust. The albino twins waved their weapons like massive maces, only to lay down fire on the stormvermin. Working as a unit, the Stormvermin and Ratling Gunners were locked together in combat, leaving the Deathrunner and the warlord to fight alone. The Deathrunner, obviously outmatched hissed and slinked out of range of his blows, his yellow eyes scanning for an opening.

The circle of rats rose to a roar as the violence intensified, bullets raced by and swords clashed as the violence continued.

The stormvermin, seeing an opportunity to strike ducked form cover as the gunners were reloading. Using his shield as a stepping-stone, he lifted the other vermin over the firing-arc and charged. As the second vermin landed, he stabbed ferociously and slashed wildly with his bardiche, catching one of the gunners in the arm. The cut was deep, and it obviously cut to the bone. The rat reeled in pain and was unable to lift his heavy weapon. His brother, seeing him cry, lifted the weapon for him and swung them around, catching the charging vermin in the jaw and knocking him out cold.

The deathrunner watched as the Warlord raised his weapon lazily. He knew he was more than a match for the deathrunner, and that made him easy prey. Taunting him with range the Deathrunner forced him to strike with his spear, making an opening. Catching the tip of the spear in his claws he reached forward and snapped the end of the spear off in one clean strike. The warlord, shocked stumbled back, only to be met by a charging Deathrunner. It toppled him sideways and buried one of his claws in the Warlord. Screaming in pain the warlord twisted over and caught the Deathrunner with a blow to the kidneys with a gauntlet covered hand. As the Deathrunner leaped back for safety he drew several small throwing knives and stood ready.

It was obvious that the Warlord was now prepared and no longer underestimated his adversary. As the runner rushed in, he let fly with a volley of knives that rammed hard into his shield. Arriving almost at the same moment, he leaped toward the warlord and crashed down hard on the piece of wood. As his claws grasped the edge of the wood, he tore and shredded at it- biting at the warlord.

Smiling the Warlord flung his shield off his arm and watched it crash to the ground. It exploded into a volley of splinter and bought him enough time to close the gap. Drawing a hammer from his belt he swung with such ferocity unseen in any Skaven. The cleaver rended flesh from bone as the hammer crushed and bruised.

It was obvious the fight was won in his favor but he could not leave alone. He hacked at the runner's corpse until the handle of his cleaver broke. Then going at it with the hammer, he pounded until he was smashing bare stone. The bloody stone floor gave testament to his brutality, and the blood soaked armor melded with his black fur- shining a deep crimson in the dark feat hall.

The crowd was quiet as the warlord stood, his back to you- panting over the dead vermin.

Finally he wiped his face of the sweat and blood and, removing his helmet turned to you.

"That is how I handle traitors, and betrayers."

I agree, the giver offered us a sense of redemption from our peoples past. I just understand though that will rub against the grain of Skaven society, especially as he goes deeper into it. He will have to fight to maintain his soul. I would like to see our "hero" remember what he has learned as well, I just know he will always be in turmoil because of it, and alone as well. agreed, Skaven are very unaccepting and naturally distrusting. I think Ritakeet should have displayed his power first. Also once his character or personality has been determined it shouldn't be randomly changed, i.e. devouring a slave mercilessly. Maybe I'm projecting, I think we are all projecting a bit too much.

    Tomorrow, same time.

    >Where did you think our initial situation with the dwarven girl could have gone?
A lot of places. I was kind of hoping to turn it into a "cat-burglar meets robin hood" scenario where the Skaven was stealing to help himself (Having become too much of a liability for the girl) and live on the outskirts of the dwarven society. But Skaven are innately ferocious and backstabbers, I'm not sure how well it would have played out. After all, a lion cub raised in captivity is still a lion.

    >Why is the entirety of this Skaven clan so accepting? We may be an avatar, but still, there must be some apprehension of us just showing up. No omens or signs of our coming?
For a society that has given itself up whole heartedly to a God whose soul goal in life is to see the downfall of all society, I imagine omens and signs would be a rare thing indeed. But for those of you who know your Skaven numerology and superstitions, you might know that Ritakeet is Grey Seer number 170- which is very bad indeed. And someone of major impotence might see that as an omen in and of itself.

    This is true.

They are raised to be solo fighters from birth. All Skaven females are massive breeding machines with eunichs to tend to them. When they give birth, its like 20-30 ratlings. They aren't cared for personally and they are simply kinda left to survive and fight for themselves. Even if a Skaven was raised to be "Domesticated" it would only be in the same sense as a zoo animal or wild bird.

In a scary situation, a rare macaw doesn't hide on your shoulder or return to its cage- when scared it shits itself and takes flight.

Wild animal + instincts + parents?

I have that feeling too. The point of these quest threads is to see where we can go with a given concept. Look at Frost Giant or Dragon Quest. Frost Giant, if we went with the standard DnD lore that it's based off of, would be a "pillage, burn, and collect riches" quest, which it wasn't. Dragon Quest, while still fulfilling a villain vibe for being a red dragon, wasn't the standard red dragon "burn everything and sit on a hoard." There was clever plot manipulation, love, and even acts of mercy, all things considered.

Those two quests were the only ones that came to mind at this hour of the night.

Heading back into a dark tunnel to find the giver after they chased you?
