    Hey, /tg/.

I've always loved capital ships and the sort of protagonist role a lot of them play in science fiction.

Especially the names. My favorite naming scheme is one I've seen in Andromeda and to a lesser degree in the Halo series.

    Balance of Judgement
    Wrath of Achilles
Pillar of Autumn (not a capital ship, but you get the idea)

The names don't even necessarily have to make sense, I just find it pretty awesome all the same.

Does /tg/ have any fun encounters with capital ships, destroyers or otherwise?

Pictured is the Kol Destroyer, pride and glory of the TEC fleet.

God shit fuck DAMN. "Capital ship" does not denote just "the biggest" ship. It denotes big, blue-water warships. "Big" generally means "not a destroyer." I.E. ships-of-the-line.

    Cruisers DEFINITELY qualify.

Only the big cruisers, i.e. the battlecruisers or heavy cruisers. Otherwise, they're just slightly bigger then destroyer destroyers.

I mean, have you seen ticonderoga class cruisers? They're practically destroyers.

Especially compared to the major ships, like the Iowa class battle... oh, wait, THOSE ARE NO LONGER IN SERVICE.

Modern navies fight with electronic warfare and missile spam. A ship that fills the "cruiser" role doesn't need to be the size of a WWII cruiser to qualify. Ship classifications have never been perfectly static, but the name generally classifies 1. what it's mission is and 2. what kind of firepower it can sling. You may as well say the USS Constitution was a littoral combat ship because they called it a frigate. Frigate in 1775 =! frigate in 2010.
    >> Anonymous 04/24/11(Sun)00:35 No.14699537
Capital ships is a term used during the heydays of battleships and denotes ships of the largest class designed to slug it out with the enemy's biggest ships. So to get in this class you generally have to have 14" batteries or bigger and either be armored heavy enough to have immunity zone against your own gun or can make 24 knots+ (which would make you a fast battleship or battlecruiser depending on the armour). Ships are grouped as capital ships to simplify strategic planning without getting bogged down into the details of gun/armour/speed of each ship.

You can't really apply the term to modern day cruisers because they are different to both cruisers of the old and battleships. If anything the closest you have to capital ships these days are aircraft carriers.

    >So to get in this class you generally have to have 14" batteries or bigger

Come the fuck on, plenty of battle-cruisers didn't have 14 inch guns. I'd put the "serious ship" limit at 8'' guns.

Of course, not everything with 8'' guns is armored well enough to be a true capital ship... the British light cruisers might not qualify as true capital ships. They were more like super badass destroyers in capabilities and mission.

Cruisers are the lightest capitol ships. Ticonderoga were to be guided missile destroyers, but were bumped to cruisers because of their ability to operate independent and act as major warships. (And the Aegis system).

Capitol ships were typically deployed independently and considered to be fit to at least survive in a field with the heaviest warships. Battle cruisers and heavy cruisers were intended to, in a pinch, fight battleships on more or less equal terms, but a cruiser was intended to be able to survive contact with hostile battleships as part of a group.

    >Come the fuck on, plenty of battle-cruisers didn't have 14 inch guns. I'd put the "serious ship" limit at 8'' guns.

There are only two battlecruiser class that doesn't have 14" or bigger gun, one is Scharnhorst class, and that's because Hitler specifically had the navy pick 11" guns to not piss off the British while making the turret ring big enough to up gun to 15" Bismarck gun when possible.

The other is Dunkerque class, which is a fast battleship with 13" guns in all guns forward layout with balls to the wall speed (31 knots) and very heavy armour for its displacement.

Funny enough the American built the Alaska class large cruiser with 12" guns, and because the USN have so many capital ships already they don't even classify it as a battlecruiser. Instead it gets a special destination called "large cruiser".

    >Of course, not everything with 8'' guns is armored well enough to be a true capital ship... the British light cruisers might not qualify as true capital ships. They were more like super badass destroyers in capabilities and mission.

No cruiser have any real armour against battleship guns, that's why they are cruisers. Any hit by 14" shell on any cruiser will be a penetration no questions asked. Cruisers are only armoured against 8" guns (even the Alaska, despite it having 12" guns itself)

After reading this list you will have gathered that Culture ships tend to name themselves whatever the hell they like. However, you may be puzzled by the recurring appearance of the word "gravitas" in there. We've got the GCU Very Little Gravitas Indeed from Use of Weapons, the GSV Zero Gravitas in Excession, and the GSV Experiencing A Significant Gravitas Shortfall from Look To Windward.

Spotting this trend, a number of people questioned Iain M. Banks, the author of the Culture novels. He responded saying that it is basically a running gag within the Culture itself. One of the Involved civilisations (i.e. different civs which have an involvement with the Culture) found it a little surprising that ships with such awesome power and intelligence would be given names like I Blame Your Mother and Space Monster. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to choose names with a little more gravitas?

Supposedly one of the Culture ship manufacturies immediately responded to this by beginning to name all their newly-created ships No Gravitas Here, Dwindling Gravitas, Absolutely No You-Know-What and the like, and continued to do so for quite some time.

Banks claims to have a growing list of about 20 "gravitas" ship names at home, but no way to use them up until his next Culture novel.

Hope someone enjoyed, now go read the culture novels. I didn't write all ^ that btw. http://qntm.org/culture

I built one of the homies a fleet for his upcoming Black Crusade game.

    It consists of:

Stun Gun, a Meritech Raider with a pair of disruptor macrobatteries
And We're Just The Escorts, a Falchion Frigate torpedo boat
Clown Car, the Defiant Light Cruiser built for nothing but boarding actions
Super Dimension Fortress, the Tyrant Cruiser built around the Voidsunder Lance

They're excellent ships, have BS and ratings higher than most players thanks to the way he asked me to build them. I found naming them hilarious.

The Macross Cannon hits under a 75, I believe, provided you use the appropriate orders. Stun Gun actually hits under an 80. Clown Car makes boarding torpedo hits at a 75 and command tests at an 80. And We're Just the Escorts makes torpedo tests and regular hits at a 75, I believe.

    Fine ships.

Formal duels for a lot of things required a full recitation of your title before begining.

This became the only reason for his dishonorable tactics: he hated standing there listening to someone blathering on about some sort of emo crap for 20 minutes.

Last time I played Sins, I got my ass whipped, brutally, by the AI. Was the good ol' TEC, fighting against dirty aliens. Was funding the pirate base to go slap their shit, and it seemed like that was working, although I never could see the results proper. Had a modest fleet, good income, was getting a second planet and researching away. I was all set for defense and preparing for steamrolling.

Then, suddenly, FATASS FLEET OUT OF NOWHERE HOLY BALLS THREE CAPITAL SHIPS.

That's alright, I can handle this shit, got a Kol and PLENTY of supporting missile boats & expendable other light ships to their three caps & fewer support vessels-

WHAT THE FUCK DOZENS OF PLANETARY BOMBARDMENT RIGS WHY WON'T THEY DIE FUCK YOU STAND AND FIGHT-

Or in other words, my fleet proper gets its shit wrecked trying to defend two worlds because the AI doesn't seem at all interested in fighting or defending itself. I went on an offensive, and a fuckton of bombardment vessels warped straight past me. Return home, they just keep firing and then run off before I can do any damage. Then they somehow pull a jackassedly huge fleet out of nowhere and fuck up my shit, while continuing to be giant fucking cockmonglers by terror bombing my colony with no regards for their own safety.

How I into Sins, /tg/? The pirates were growing with my funding and presumably raiding the shit out of the AI, my fleet was all set, yet the AI had a massive fleet despite the pirate harassment, bombed me to hell, didn't bother defending itself, was full on pants-on-head retarded, and yet STILL cut my fleet to ribbons while doing nothing but passively firing on me while it terror bombed. What do?

Which version of Sins are you playing? Any Mods?

In any case, here's what I do:
Build an Akkan BC as first cap-ships, because colony frigates are worse than useless for anything other than capturing neutral resource points.

Colonize the asteroid that is always next to the planet you begin with.
Remember to build one of each research station on your homeworld.

After capturing, asteroid, fill that it's logistic with Military labs (especially if it only has a two way phase lane between it and your capital).

Continue expanding, and make sure you research health and armour upgrades (seriously, good armour means that your capships might be able to survive escaping to the end of a grav-well while under fire by a small fleet, and live).

Once you are able to get starbases, research that shit, then build those fuckers all over the place when you have the economy to do so (if you are playing TEC and don't have a good economy, you are failing), even in places that don't have.

Put Aux-government on all starbases that guard planets to force the AI to attack it. If they attack a fully upgraded starbase (armour and weapons), they are either slaugthered or take heavy losses, and in a worst case scenario might delay them for long enough for your fleet to arrive.

That's the tactic I use all the time anyway, it's not a surefire way to win, but it helps.

But, in a nutshell, I need to get the expansions to balance the game out, swap from the Kol to the Akkan as my first capital ship, and continue with my turtle-booming tactic? That's it?

    >>14705474
I found turtling pretty useless in Vanilla, but yes use the Akkan as first cap-ship, the Kol is horrible as a first choice (a level 6+ Kol in combination with a level 6+ Dunov becomes a monster of enormous proportions though, because it can spam flak field and Gauss cannon like no other).

Also, a pretty good idea is to build a trade station on almost every world you get, the amount of income you can get from trade can be insane.

THAT much (trade center wise) I already knew. I thought the Akkan's colonization ability to be redundant or useless and instead opted for the heavy hitter that is the Kol, to smash the shit out of any early or midgame assaults until my economy could handle more capital ships.

I was pretty sure this'd take a huge retooling of tactics, but instead all I need to avoid a clusterfuck of massive proportions is an expansion, a different capital ship choice, and maybe a different path for early research.

Amen, use the Akkan for your opening capital ship, and go capping new planets as soon as you eliminate the underdevelopment penalty for a planet.

Oh, and goddamn pirates! I was playing trinity on a huge game against AI. Game ran for 10+ hours and the pirates were still alive. Their stats scale up the longer the game goes, so by that time my entire 2200 supply fleet had no chance against them in a straight up fight.

Luckily TEC gets the Nova cannon, 2 shots at the pirate base and that ended their coordinated attacks. I still can't take that base though, 4 of their frigates can take down a starbase.

Early game, the TEC are by far the weakest race. Midgame, they're meh.

Oh jesus tits did you let a TEC player get to the endgame? The end of their tech tree looks like death. If they put down the economy they had the ability to, and the techs they needed, they're simply going to make it rain ships. You will not be able to outproduce them. Just not gonna happen. And, then there's the nova cannon. It's funny if they have one, kind of a pain, you know you need to kill it. When they have six of them, and they're popping three planets every recharge? You know you're boned

Like it was noted, that is not how you play Sins.

You play Sins like EXPAND EXPAND EXPAND, then TURRETS AND STARBASES FUCKING EVERYWHERE, and THEN you start balancing your research away and building up an asskicker fleet.

Hull and armor upgrades, metal and crystal upgrades, population cap upgrades and whatever turret upgrades you have are however a must in early game.

You just have to know the strengths and weaknesses of drakes to know how to deal with them. Fist, they can do one of two things: tank or DPS, not both at once. You can either ignore them(if they can hit you at 50km they're either rookies or tanks) or just stay out of range and gun them down.

Case in point, one of the guys in my alliance was bragging about how good his drake was, so I challenged him with my Rattlesnake(he thought I was bringing out a scorpion at first). Hit him with a pair of webber drones and a trio of Ogre II's, backed away and torped his ass until he was in armor(didn't take long).

Later on he challenged me to a rematch so I used my Proteus(still in a C6 pulsar mind you) and still knocked him into armor before he got much past my shields.

Drakes make good blob ships if your FC doesn't want to worry about tactics, but as a whole, I'm not impressed with them.

Agreed, although they can tank pretty damnned well. I keep seeing pairs of drakes one tanking (and inevitability the first to warp in) and one DPS boat.

Good news is unless the first one has HAM's, you can ignore it and fuck up the DPS one.

Annoyed at some of my corpmembers at the moment for losing a tanked drake, twice. because they cant tackle for shit....

It's really good. You can spend HOURS without noticing it, it's that addictive.
Combat is sort of straightforward, with micromanaging not being all that important.

One thing I like about it is the culture system. Essentially you build a special building type, which then starts broadcasting propaganda/commercials.
If your culture goes uncontested for long enough, a planet will rebel and overthrow whoever is owning it, making it ripe for the taking.
(I also think it's funny how the TEC are capable of making commercials that are convincing enough to cause revolutions on a planetary scale).

Also, like someone else mentioned, try Homeworld if you are able to.

So I heard you guys liked capital ships.

I tend to name my battleships after the setting's gods if they're the most powerful ships in the fleet, or legendary heroes otherwise.

Carriers, on the other hand, tend to get the names of birds and other flying creatures.

For example, the Jannath-class battleship Kiari and the Peregrine-class carrier Oriole.

Think I was doing something like 240 damage per missile. but its been a long time since I was a player, so cant really remember details.
might've actually been the second volley that blew through shields, in hindsight. what is certain is it was over in about 15 seconds, with me trying to stop firing and realising the missiles were already in the air.

Trusty frig-load'o'guns, the vanguard of the 8th fleet's "diplomacy" core.

One of her greatest acts was extinguishing a rebellion on one of the largest production worlds in the alpha-sigmata sector - the planet rebels, the organic inhabitants managing to interrupt the automatic processes and causing all production to grind to a halt. We had a contingent of adepts with us who could restore the planet back to proper form but they would be killed if they landed, and the rebels started turning their fancy new weapons against us. They'd also fucked up the power generators in such a magnificent way that if nothing was done soon the entire sector would go up in flames.

    Situation:
Rebels on the planets surface, stopping any attempts to get the machines back to working order again, can't be taken by normal force since they're all over and in the planet.

    The solution:
Use the vast abundance of shooty-sticks mounted to the hull to create a null-point meta-hole (pimped up local blackhole) in space away from the planet, then, whilst still fighting off whatever the rebels could chuck at us via the planet, attach gravity tethers to said planet and haul its ass over to the hole.

Due to the fancy way it got created it was only big enough to consume a single human at a time, leading to the next four days of spinning the planet across and through this tiny area of nothing until every single organic being on the planet was gone - not even being buried near the core could save them. After this, adepts landed, system restored etc.

(Physics took a back seat in this for sheer amusement factor).

Is the Akkan still glitched? It used to suck ass. I usually roll with 4 Kol, 4 Sova, 2 Dunov, and 6 Marza

If advent, 4 Radiance, 6 Halcyon, and 2 of each of the others.

But then, I am a little OCD about having my fleet ships come in even numbers, and I usually split my capital ships into 2 separate identical fleets for greater tactical flexibility.

Whenever I play Sins I always pick a naming scheme and continue it. Either they're named after emotions or songs... it's less emogaylol when I'm doing it. My favorite set so far was name after songs by The National. I had the:

    Bloodbuzz
    High Violet
    Sugar Wife
    Trophy Wife (Destroyed)
Sin-Eater (Built to avenge the Trophy Wife!)
    Water Wall
    Vanderlyle
    Cherry Tree

It was a lovely sight, my ships singing the funeral dirge of my enemies.

I am partial to Sins more than to Sword of the Stars, mainly because of the TEC being free trade masters while the Human SolForce in SotS is by the fluff creators decree a totalitarian orvelian nightmare. With food and water rationing and even work rationing.

And yes the Akkan is the first thing to take as a cap ship due to the large antimater reserves and fast expansion it can provide Killing NPC guards and colonizing planets so fast its not even funny.

Also the TEC political and economical research trees are beast.

As for ship names I am quite fond of the three name scheme in the Halo series...

Humans are the only ones who get those lines naturally, other races have to slog through space in different ways. One race makes its own high speed paths similar to the ones humans use, except they can choose where they go too (humans can't, they have to use the ones that are already there), another gets speed boosts the more ships are in one fleet, one uses a gate system that they have to set up manually, and I forget the other 2 but they're different too.

One has a drive that gets faster/more manuverable the further you're away from any stars. Then there's the race that gets the standard scifi drive. Average speed in a straight line.

Oh yeah the space dolphins have that one don't they? I can't remember really, I only play humans primarily because I can't stand the voices of any of the other races.

That said, I prefer SotS over SoaSE, mainly because of the larger tech trees and ship customisation options; though I hope SotS2 has more customisation options and some way for missiles to last beyond the early stages of a match - by the time I reached cruiser stage, I usually just filled all the small weapon slots with point defence guns (usually lasers for better accuracy) and filled all the other slots with guns.
    >> Anonymous 04/25/11(Mon)10:18 No.14715842
    >>14715791
You're correct. The dolphins get that one.

I have to admit, the voice acting for all races is pretty horrible. As far as I know, the devs and their families/friends did most of them to save money.
I'm a bit wary of Sots 2 because they already said that they've got 2 addons planned again. And sots 1 wasn't really enjoyable until the second addon.

Humans are my favourite race as well, so I only keep using missles on defense satellites. Their ships' small mounts aren't really useful for anything but pd.

    >>14715842

I'm surprised you use missiles (or defence satellites for that matter) at all, I've found little use for them. Though the big question is: Ballistics or lasers?

[camp]No fuel here, commander! We aren't going aaanywhere.[/camp] Also the borderline racist accent impersonations.
The Liir/Tarkas probably have the best VA, because they don't feature horribly forced 'strangeness' (HTHEERE HIS NO FHUEL HERE, MORRO-QU'AAAAAHN/Fooorgeeeve us, my qweeeen- we were sloooow, but successsssful).

Maybe Zuul. The universe heals itself, my lord- shall we wound it anew?

Anyway, I just hope to god they hire some VAs- the SoTS 2 trailer had the same 'gather the office staff to record it' voicework:

Also, I liked the Zuul's VA. Agreed on all the other races, though

Also, did they change the ring-engines of the humans in SoTS2? Because I liked those. They looked distinctive and kind of cool

That was one of my favorite things about SoTS, actually. Every race had such immediately identifiable ships, such highly distinctive ship designs. In terms of aesthetics I loved the.. Morrigi I think they were called? The bird-dragon things. Shame that their voice acting was so atrocious

Relatively speaking, yes. Though the research guy's voice gets a little grating, I'll admit.

    >>14716098

I prefer lasers personally, they seem to have a better range, but you can't get point defences if you don't do some ballistic research, so there's that. Ballistics also have that planet cracker cannon, or whatever it's called. Dreadnought sized revolver used for smashing planets, fuck yeah.

    >>14716371

Thanks. And that's good. Looking at only a little more than 4 months until it's release date, too. Cool!

    >>14716448

Yeah, lasers were almost invariably better than missiles and guns. Most of the really good gun tech was pretty early, as soon as you got armor penetration rounds. Otherwise it was just kind of eh. Missiles became useless way too quickly. I never really found a way to make them work. Then again, I played Morrigi and Zuul, so that may be why since birdfags favor lasers and the glorious Zuul empire favors whatever decent dakka we can get our hands on the fastest
    >> Anonymous 04/25/11(Mon)11:58 No.14716600
    >>14716533

I found lasers work really well for human ships too, especially when you're assaulting an enemy planet. You can just park your ships in front of the planet, use the HC lasers for orbital bombardment, and use the rest of the lasers to take out any incoming defence ships. You'd think the AI would learn to shoot at the engines of human ships...
