Your name is Maya Terrasdottir. You were once human, one of billions in a modern world. You were once a Frost Giant, a mage and scholar driven to transform the planet itself. No longer confined by the chains of mortality, you float unseen above the great expanse of Providence, a wandering spirit of the upper planes.

The world turns. Beneath you, the people of your adopted town await your thoughts, sitting in silence. One of their own has perished, her spirit ascending to the realm of the gods. This is a time of great anticipation, for your choice is a vast one. In one month's time, you will become a fixture of this place, trapped behind the gates of heaven. You have until then to re-assume a mortal form, or accept your new life as a spirit of the beyond.

It is not a difficult choice. The surface has always been your home, and the people of this world now hold your heart. You can't help but feel you'd be abandoning them by making a new life in this plane, so far above them. You can't help but feel you belong down there, sharing in their pain and joy alike, laughing with them, fighting by their side. By the grace of your gods you have been given another chance, one among many. It shouldn't be wasted.

But there is one thing, at least, that you should do before you go. The powers and perceptions of this realm are yours, for the moment, to command. And there is something you wish to see.

The garrison of Fairnest unfolds before your ethereal eyes. With Hretmar's aid, you enter the cathedral of the mages, searching for your place of rest. Your power draining quickly, you find the object, that tiny wooden box lying untouched at the side of your bed. You peer inside, vision clouded by fringes of white. A ring, inscribed with shining runes, lies within. Waiting for your return, as patient as can be.

You inform your adopted family that you will remain apart for a week, possibly more. You have a fine opportunity to gather information, one that you might not get ever again. Of course, you will return before the month is up. The twins, as you expected, ask you to share any 'sensitive' information with Intelligence, just in case it could help end the war more quickly. As you cut the link, Hretmar advises you to be as careful as possible, since being a spirit does not make you invincible.

For the next few days, you extend your vision over the Capitol and the advancing fronts of Perin's army. Many government buildings, command posts, and even private residences turn out to be shielded from scrying, blocking your sight. An enormous haze, like a genuine fog of war, hangs over much of the Southwest, obscuring troops and supply lines on both sides of the battlefield. Despite these setbacks, you persist, finding ways to peek behind the walls that defend from prying eyes.

The Lord of Perin rarely ventures out of the palace, only coming out to make one short speech and to make the short trip to the Conclave's temple. He seems to be a rather gruff, stern man, though it is clear that the removal of the underground threat has put him more at ease. His son, Prince Cear, is the high commander of the Second Army, currently laying siege to the Forusian fortress-city of Baccira. The two could not be more different; where Lord Olan is insular, uncompromising, and generally unhappy, Cear is optimistic, friendly, and quite lenient with discipline.
    >> ★ Subprocessor DM 03/19/10(Fri)16:46 No.8667299
    rolled 5, 2, 6 = 13

The anti-scrying enchantments make it difficult to discern much more than your targets' personalities, but even the tiniest bit of information can prove useful. Most of the upper administrators are confident that the war will soon end with Forus's surrender, though some of the Intelligence and Conclave leaders believe that swaying the frost demon to Perin's side, at least temporarily, could massively reduce expected casualties. The prevailing thought seems to be that Forus was relying far too heavily on the incursion plan, and can now be easily beaten.

Much of Perin's internal structure has been damaged. Plantations have burned, entire towns have been consumed by the earth, and the very shape of the land has changed. Reconstruction is proceeding, but will be ridiculously limited in scope until the military stops drawing so many resources. The First, Second, Third, and Fifth armies are all making steady progress, from what little you can see, but the Fourth and Sixth have been bogged down in the mountains of Northern Forus.

The enemy seems to be growing desperate, going as far as to make use of 'abominations' lashed together from human, golem, and elemental material. These horrible things are extremely effective in battle, but seem to be coming apart at the seams everywhere you look, probably dying very quickly after their creation. As for the old Frost Giant city of Karok, far to the North, the demon of ice seems to be slowly making its way there, dragging a caravan of slaves that extends even beyond its anti-scrying field. The city itself, or what remains of it, is open to you, but the lower levels cannot be accessed, even by Hretmar. The wall of knowledge is still beyond your vision.

There are many different plans, some involving an offering of some sort, from the souls of captured Forusians to the entire enemy state itself. A few members of the Conclave believe that they can bind the demon to the will of man, either sealing it within an artifact again or using a 'simple' control spell.

I have a currently irrelevant question.

If we specialized in Earth magic, would we be able to create specific metals or transmute elements, like, say, pure iron, or alkali metals, or such?

I ask because, as everyone who graduated from high school knows, electricity was discovered as being "what happens when dissimilar metals are immersed in an acid." Of course it wouldn't specifically HAVE to be an acid, any decent electrolyte would do. We could make and charge and magically recharge huge batteries. We could also make and shape a giant-sized metal-bodied resonator guitar, create a simple moving-coil microphone, and make a decent magnetic speaker with Rare Earth Metal magnets and copper wire, insulate all the electronic parts with solid non-conductive rock, and then with our battery backpack, microphones, huge giant-portable speakers, and oversized resonator guitar, we could begin to teach this world the true power of metal.

Also, we could totally make nukes with simple gun-type assemblies, the hard part was always getting enough fissionable material and we could make or manipulate uranium or plutonium metals, but that's rather obviously a far less powerful weapon.

Most likely not. For one thing, you were not acting alone. For another, you released a force potentially more dangerous than the one that was eliminated. It could be argued that you saved the nation and doomed it at the same time. You could probably obtain a minor title of nobility due to circumstances, especially with Ceril backing you, but the government at large is not particularly enamored with you, for the above reasons and others.

    >>8667518
It would be easier to do that with Alchemy than earth magic. It is entirely possible to transmute elements, and to create matter outright, but both are energy-intensive activities.

Only the first-level planes, known colloquially as the Realm of the Gods, orbit the planet. Above those, you jump into the levels common to this area of the universe, and above those, all of existence. It's a hierarchy.

As for the moon, you can see it from where you are. Your vision is extremely limited, since none of the gods you know include it in their domain, but from what reaches you, it looks as gray and barren as the old one. Nothing of note.

Contacting Ceril was not as easy as you thought. Being the daughter of an Intelligence man, it seems only proper for her to be well-protected against spirits and the divine. Thankfully, Captain Sae was around to take the call, and was more than happy, after recovering from shock, to pass you over to the Commander.

You explained what happened as best you could, and she took it well, you think. You are not the first spirit she has spoken to, but you are the first that was one of her 'men'. She asked if you had seen or talked to anyone from the garrison, but unfortunately, you had not. You didn't venture out of Hretmar's influence the whole time.

The question of whether or not you will be returning to military service can be answered later. At the moment, you have some things to pick up.

Signaling Hretmar as you close the link, you sink back into the familiar blackness of the realm, feeling the soft lights of the other gods blink into the night around you. One moment, you are a spirit, floating free. The next, you are on the ground, your nerves blazing with a quickly-fading fire. You drop to your knees, wrapping your arms around your midsection. You feel... whole again. As the brief, sharp pain fades into nothing, you begin to stand, warily, finding balance easier than you thought it would be. You're in the garrison cathedral, wearing rough, canvas overalls. At least they remembered clothes.

It's funny, how real it all is. Here you are, in a world of war and magic, skipping along in a body made by gods. This is your 'normal' now. This is what life is like in your environment. The trees pass more and more rapidly as you gain speed, testing out your new legs. They seem longer, thinner, untrained. You'll have to fix that last part.

The days rush by as you travel, hunting for food with a makeshift spear. It's like old times, when you first arrived, surviving on instinct in an unfamiliar land. Nostalgic, in a way. With a little help from Hretmar, you make it through, passing burnt clearings where Demons once arose from the earth, sneaking past outposts once a flurry of activity. You reach Dreamwood, not two weeks out, with your helpful god heralding your return.

You come home. Everyone, from the oldest to the youngest, has turned out to see you. You walk through the palisade like a conquering hero, to cheers of adoration and welcome. Dreman shouts that he's re-making your crossbow, with the best material he can find. Vasian tells you he's found out about some things you might want to know, as do the twins. The elders then inform you that Jerith will be back in a week or so, all amidst the roar of the small crowd. But none of it seems very important to you right now.

There is one person among the hundred who stands out. Who looks, not at you, but at the ground , silent and with a blank face. You gravitate toward him, blocking out the praises and questions of the others, moving forward while the rest trail behind. His eyes reach yours as you come to a stop, smiling despite yourself.

“I... suppose you opened the box,” he says sheepishly, to which you nod. “I hope you like the ring.” A painful pause. “It's yours, Maya. You don't have to do anything you don't want to.”

Kel welcomes the break in tension. He seems to be almost as conflicted as you, if that's possible. And here you thought that things were easier in fantasy-land.

You turn to the twins first, since they're the closest. One of their contacts, they say secretively (despite the surroundings), has informed them of a movement within the Intelligence department. Apparently, some are all for actually allying with the frost demon, not just using it to defeat Forus. There isn't much more information than that, but if the contact is to be believed, a few of those people are fairly high up in the organization, with some real influence. Troubling.

Vasian is next, imploring you to lean down, as his voice is failing. He has acquired a book that mentions the Bleeding Sun. As you feared, he is quite a bit more powerful than any of the gods you've met, and probably legitimately insane. You should read it for yourself, when you have the time. Well, the way I was hoping to spin it was that the next big crisis that's coming up is the Frost Demon
If we could convince her that we felt that it was our (Maya's) fault that it was released, and to stop the demon from destroying everything we tried to save that we were reincarnating.
It wouldn't be easy, and it would probably result in our deaths, but it's what needs to be done.
We know Supra has already sacrificed a lot, and that we have no right to expect her to do anything for us, but only want her to know that if she's up for it, we could use another giant blue helping hand in our quest to stop the demon from making slaves of the frost giants.
Also that frost giants get a huge natural bonus for ice based magic.
More elqouent than that, of course

Demons first move will be to subjugate the frost giant tribes
A frost giantess is ideally suited for dealing with this situation

You should have expected there would be a party. The entire town is celebrating your return, intent on going all through the night. Since you've lost your magical talents, all you can do is give the children rides, a tradition you think will stick around for a long while. When feast time rolls around, Vasian and the hunters put on a play for the rest of you, something the old scholar wrote up while you were 'indisposed'.

It is a tale of a lone Frost Giant beating back the mighty forces of hell with a gigantic sword forged from metal wands, a hilariously embellished version of the latest part of your life, with parts of Doom and Berserk that you've mentioned mixed in. Maya, Conqueror of the Red Planet, slashes her way through hordes of multicolored Demons in a massive stone complex, first with her fists and a small knife, and later with the aforementioned 'BFS', a weapon taller than you, with the power to slay thousands with fiery green rays.

After the last act, you take Kel aside as discreetly as you can, counting on the elders to keep the rest from noticing that the giant blue woman has disappeared again.

The poor hunter repeats, in no uncertain terms, that you're free to do whatever you want. The ring is a gesture, conveying his (for lack of a better term) 'interest' in you. Basically, since you have already died (regardless of your return), you're even less obligated than you would normally be. Custom, as usual, is a convoluted mess, but the gist of it is, you can accept or reject the gift with no repercussions, or choose to enter a 'deeper' relationship. No pressure, of course.

Well. Here you are, a reincarnated Frost Giant with the brain of a male from Earth standing behind the main hall in a human town, about to be engaged to a hunter. There is literally no way you could ever, ever have anticipated this. Or the fact that you seem to be fine with this. Constantly facing maiming and death must have forced you to mellow out a little.

The ring slips onto your finger, its silver runes gleaming in the moonlight. Kel tenses, and you can't help but chuckle.

“I like it. It fits perfectly,” you say, admiring it carefully.

The hunter scratches the back of his head, slightly hunched as if he's expecting an attack. “About... uh-” he trails off, with a confused look on his face.

“I'd be glad to,” you answer, smiling. “But I don't think they make dresses in my size.”

For a moment, he just stands there, dumbstruck. And then you both burst out laughing, holding your sides like you just heard the funniest joke in the world. Some things don't change, no matter where you are.

I'd assume that we were smart enough for 'as close to our old body as possible' to mean the external, physical appearance while giving us free reign to make our insides 'better', within reason. Even something as simple as increasing the number of muscle fibers would give a great increase in physical strength, as long as the tendons and bones were strengthened to match the new strength as well.

You lean down, slowly, bringing yourself down to his level. It's almost comical how different you are, but that's just the way it is. You give the hunter a light, gentle kiss, as carefully as you can. He returns it, embracing you with his arms. After a moment, you part, returning to your full height as his cheeks turn a rather bright red. You smile broadly, and he smiles back, speechless. With a brief exchange of glances, you both step out from behind the hall, and return to the others.

You both try your best to keep that little smirk off your faces, failing miserably. Sahl gives you a knowing look, but stays silent, obviously very amused. The night wears on, as the two of you attempt to keep everything under wraps. You're sure that most of the village knows already, but this is just how it's done. Thankfully, you find a moment to ask Vasian about the book he told you about, and he escorts you to the library to retrieve it, taking you away from all the excitement.

The old, battered tome passes into your hands, bits of the wrinkled cover flaking off as you open it. From what you can see, it's a book about the outer gods, those far enough above the lessers to actually care about other planets. There is an entire chapter dedicated to the Bleeding Sun, beginning with his origin myth. Apparently, he is said to have once been a god of light, who had something of a breakdown after a war in heaven, and began consuming other deities. Eventually, the remnants of those old gods swimming around in his mind drove him completely insane. And that's just the first two pages.

Hetmar straight up told us he can squash it like a bug (unless he was talking about that while it was captured but I doubt that because then he wouldn't be so casual about it). Also do you guys thing a tablet with such a POWERFUL tablet could end up in wander mage's hands? Whoever would manage to trap it would have made sure to protect it in the deepest damn dungeon ( unless of course DM explains that it's extremely ancient and was found in long abandoned temple in the deepest dungeon centuries ago and no one knows anything about it but the again Hetmar would have noticed the power inside it)

Though come to think of it, since it's an Ice demon and falls under his domain, why don't we talk to him (after a suitably lengthy break. Hretmar is not infallible. Do you really think it would be impossible for an enormous demon to ramp down its apparent power, to lull you into a false sense of security and thereby encourage you to release it? That seems like a pretty sound plan to me.

Also, the tablet's history is mostly unknown. The man Lark bought it from gave plenty of warnings, but nothing to indicate something on this scale. It could be from anywhere, and possibly hundreds or thousands of years old.

It's just for the whole game I take it to the heart the part "*YOU* are a human male from earth in Frost Giantess body" and try to think :"what would I do, how would I react"

Example: when we killed 2 adventurers way back, everyone kind of felt sad and teary. For some reason I couldn't imagine myself doing so, so I though that part was funny. And later we feel depressed about the people we lost during the demon incursion, I felt the same here.

Maybe not now, but it's good to know that we could attract some bright heads. we should build a totally bitching university at one point. Our common sense knowledge can bring us only that far. We can supply with enormous amount of ideas (from paperclip to spaceshuttle) and they will have to make it reality

But that's a very long term plan at best. We need to have huge population. I think after couple of months of vigorous training (to get magic back) we should start to attract immigrants.

You decide to take a sizable break from the party, even though it's in your honor. This book has some information you would like to know sooner rather than later. With Vasian's assistance, you work your way through the chapter on the Bleeding Sun, learning as much as you can, keeping in mind that none of it is necessarily true.

The Bleeding Sun was once a god of the light domain, with thousands of brothers and sisters. He had control of sunlight in a far corner of the world, a region overrun with jungle. The war came when he was just a tiny speck among the great and powerful lords of the planet, and it is only due to his relative lack of power that he survived as long as he did. Almost all of his siblings were wiped out, along with a good chunk of the planet and a fair number of gods from other domains. The jungle he presided over became a desert as the system he was part of collapsed, plunging Providence (or Varia, as they call it) into a miniature apocalypse.

The Bleeding Sun's despair led him to lash out against the aggressors, themselves cut down to even lower numbers. Suicidal and without guidance, the Bleeding Sun consumed the remnants, one by one, increasing his own power to incredible heights while taking near-fatal damage over and over. He was only stopped by a coalition of lesser deities, banded together into a super-entity with power rivaling his own. By then, his power was great enough to grant him access to the next level of gods, but those would not accept him, because of his misdeeds. So, he sunk further and further into despair, abandoned and cast away by all, constantly assaulted by a thousand voices in his mind.

He broke. The once-joyous sun god lost what little sanity he had left, giving in completely to the calling of the voices. For generations he closed himself off from all contact, speaking only to himself and his screeching companions. His strength waned, and his insanity deepened, finally bringing him to emerge as a fractured version of his former self, tortured by his very existence. He began to call himself a guardian of reality, adopting a horribly twisted avatar that bled sickness from every pore. The coalition, having repopulated the realm of the gods since the Bleeding Sun's departure, was powerful enough to keep him from repeating his former actions, threatening him with absolute death if he ever touched another of his own kind.

This is the state in which he is now. His power has been brought back to its previous height, but it is not enough to allow him to defeat the coalition. Unable to sate his hunger for fear of oblivion, he contents himself with meddling in the mortal plane. The gods above do little to stop him, and it is rumored that he is a source of amusement for the higher deities. The Bleeding Sun is an inmate in a planet-wide asylum, and he is not to be trifled with.

As the night crosses into morning, you tell the villagers a story you have wanted to tell for a very long time. The end of Samurai Jack, a proper conclusion that the show never got on Earth. You begin the destruction of Aku's world. Jack leads the embittered, impoverished peoples of the capitol against the dark lord's highest minions, with the Scotsman providing air cover with a host of metal golems, all strung together and armed with crude copies of his magical assault leg. Laughing barely intelligible curses and rhymes, he flies directly over Aku's tower, propelled by a constant stream of explosions from his leg, and crashes head-first into the base while his 'metally friends' detonate around him.

The tower tips, nearly falling over, but stopped midway by the mighty power of the shapeshifting master of darkness. The Scotsman crawls out of the wreckage, a little battered and remarking snarkily about the weak stuff Aku calls a foundation. Meanwhile, the civilian army secures the lavish palaces of the bourgeoisie, and Jack meets Aki in the tunnels beneath the city, pitting his magic sword against the powers of her father. An epic battle unfolds inside the machinery of Aku's fortress, culminating in an accidental maneuver that puts the sword straight through Aki's heart. Her last words are, “Jack, I always...” as she dies in his arms.

He carries her body to the top of the tower, entering Aku's throne room unopposed. The dark lord, seeing what Jack has done, flies into a murderous rage, heading straight for him. The Scotsman, having climbed all the way up the outside of the tower with his bare hands, shouts for Jack to get out of the way, but the Samurai stands his ground. And with one swift motion, he slices the dark lord in two, embedding the magic sword in the floor without ever appearing to move at all. The voice of Aku curses the Samurai repeatedly as he strides up to the throne, the tower collapsing around him.

Jack places the body of Aki upon her father's seat, and kneels, speaking a simple prayer for her soul. Aku, now nothing more than a shadow on the ground, abandons his blasted fortress and his daughter, without so much as a single look back. The Samurai keeps his position, through all of the Scotsman's shouts and insults, until the gruff, massive man realizes that it's hopeless, and jumps from the falling tower, wishing Jack well in the afterlife. The Samurai stays, eyes closed, hands folded, while the tower topples. Content.

And the throne... opens. The seat of the dark lord rises from the floor, revealing the secret beneath it. The time portal, which Aku always kept in the safest possible place. Springing from the floor, Jack makes a flying leap, bringing himself and Aki through the portal just as the throne room smashes into the earth, burying the portal beneath a thousand tons of rubble. Jack emerges in the past, in the land of his birth, running at full speed toward the temple of his ancestors. Within, he pleads with them to return Aki to life, and they agree, on one condition.

He has to return to the future, and defeat Aku once and for all.

He accepts. Aki takes her first breath just as he disappears, giving the barest hint of a smile.

    End.
