    Coninuation of >>7718619

It is 11pm at night on the second day of the Battle of Midway, wrangling with base commander Commodore Haylon about going patrol.

    >>7723078
    >"If possible, sir, I'd like to request an extension to three hours, one extra pilot to join myself and Ensign Ringo on the patrol, and permission to engage Federation targets if the opportunity presents itself; in the latter instance, one suit would engage while the other two continue the patrol."

"Well, I suppose now is as good a time as any. That last supply plane came with the last member of your squad. If you head down to hangar bay 12, I'll page him to meet you there. He's recon specialist called Calvin Hobart. He's brought a mobile suit with him, luckily for us... Could have done with another Hygogg, but what high command wants, high command gets..."

Let's go meet him. While we're at it we should send Zolomon to find us a Z'Gock to pilot. If all goes well then our new guy and Zolomon can take the Dodais while we take the underwater route.

    You head to the Hangar.

Just to check: Ruubens and Jolyne are going salvaging right? (Ookawara is working on the Rhino.)

You reach to hangar and are introduced to Calvin Hobart. He is a youngish man, but unlike the LAST newbie on your team he appears to have earned his wings in combat. He introduces himself with a reasonably firm handshake. You talk with him on the way to the mobile suits.

"So, Calvine, whater were you doing before this?"

"Well, I came down a few months ago, where I did spotting for Artillery units in africa, but before that, I was doing combat intelligence support ops near the Luna 2 garrison area. It's an honour to be in the unit sir, I've heard nothing but good things."

"... good thing that barrage took out the long range comms..." You hear Zolomon mumble under his breath.

    You've missed NOTHING.

    NOTHING.

You are introduced to Calvins suit: A MS-06E Recon Zaku. It bristles with camera's, laser communication devices, rangefinders and other gear.

THE RECON ZAKU HAS AN EASIER TIME SPOTTING INCOMING ENEMIES, AND IS CAPABLE OF LINKING INTO LOCAL SENSOR NETWORKS AS WELL.
IT IS *NOT* HOWEVER AN ELECTRONIC WARFARE UNIT, NOR CAN IT BE USED FOR HACKING.
IT'S PRIMARY STRENGTH HOWEVER IS AS A SPOTTER FOR ARTILLERY UNITS.

So, pick your suits if you please.

    >Zeonquest Emergency discussion thread 01/22/10(Fri)09:45

    >Gentlemen, there is no better way to put it than this: we screwed up. We made a suggestion without any real understanding of Naval tactics. Our superior officer, believing that we had a better understanding of MS usage and strategy, ignored his own insticts and went with our plan. It didnt work out as we'd hoped. The onlything we can do about it now is take our battered and bloodied forces and WIN THIS BATTLE FOR ZEON!

    >Since I wont be back from work until Zeonquest is probably over I've decided to leave some ideas here.

    >We do have one piece of good news: With the destruction of the Fed Carrier we now have air superiority. If our local officer in charge of Intel could now do his job whuile his vehicle is in repair we can find out if there's any chance of other Carriers showing up. Until that happens we have a GAW armed with Mega Partile Beams that could seriously harm the Feddie surface fleet. Staying at an altitude of 8,000m or higher the GAW could make long range attack runs, breaking off once within 10-15 km from the fleet. Our air crews could then orbit out to range until they were set up for another run at the fleet and repeat as necessary.

    This as well.

In fact, after we explain the fuckup to him, let's ask him to give us a crash course in how to minimize the chances of similar fuckups in the future.

Kind of like how we STILL need to talk to Hovis about what he knows about MS/MA movement protocols, capabilities and programming.

And how we need to talk to Jolyne, well, because we've barely talked to her at all.

On the Hovis front, perhaps we could see if we could use his injury to arrange some reconciliation between himself and his wife and daughter?

I get the feeling it's just a few people. I mean, there's no way we could have known. Yes, we probably should have headed back sooner, but on the admittedly small bright side, with all those sensor buoys that we dropped no one will be able to sneak in from that angle.

I'd say that it's mostly Boone who's pissed at us, and my money's on him being a spy. Or just a jerk, which is almost as bad.

    >That deals with the surface fleet, now for the subs. Taking out the Federation submarines will not be easy due to the sheer number of them in addition to the Marine Balls supporting them. One advantage we have is their proximity to the main fleet. With so many frieldly subs so close by the federation surface ships may be reluctant to deploy depthcharges. Our most effective tactics so far have revolved around stealth. Two man MS teams should be able to sneak up on the fleet and have enough firepower between them to rapidly dispath a single sub before retreating back to our lines. This would not be a single all-out attack but rather a series of hit and fades lasting continuously for the rest of the battle for Midway. A "Death by a thousand cuts" if you will, that will wear down their fleet and allow time for more of our Marine MS to be repaired and brought back into the fight.

    >We have to regain the initiative, put the Federation on their heels and keep 'em there. We're the fucking Nightmare Unit, and it's time to show these Fed sonsabitches the Mobile Suit in Attack!

    That suit looks pretty nice.

What we should do with it is look into feeding sensor data from our frontline suits through it and back to our long-range suits and MA. Also maybe have Ookawara look into getting some sort of wire-linked drones that can be run from the Recon Zaku to extend its spotting range and triangulation capabilities.

In fact, use our pager to mention our new suit and pilot to Ookawara now. That way he can factor it and its capabilities into the work he's doing on the Rhino, as well as the repairs to Jolyne's Zaku Cannon.

    Well, only if it's possible.

But we should ask Ookawara if there might be some way of carrying capacitors around that we could charge and use to power the gun instead, rather than having to run it solely on our suit's powerplant.

Maybe even set up some way to recharge those capacitors from the powerplant after use, albeit at a slow enough rate that suit performance isn't degraded.

No go I'm afraid. The MP cannons in the Zock and the Gogg are water cooled - as in they wont work outside of water. The Z'Gok only get's away with it because the entire suit is built around a gigantic pair of heatsink's in the torso.

And the lack of flight capable MSes in OYW makes me sad, I mean there were those Goufs, But they were all failures and the last one exploded randomly.

You equip yourself with a 120mm and some Panzerfaust. Zolomon packs himself a Zook.
Whilst the E-Type doesn't come with weapons as standard, he packs a 90mm along with a Heat Hawk.

You take off at around 11pm, your Gaw takes off shortly afterwards. You tell Calvin to keep one camera on the Gaw as it makes it's progress.
It take about 20 minutes for the Gaw to reach it's destination, whereupon it gets bracketed by at least fifty different sources of flack.
Explosions and particle beam cannon fire are the Gaw's reply.

"Well, this give's us some good footage on their current arrangement. We'll know more when the Gaw get's back, but it looks like the Cruisers have gone. Probably no use for them after they used all of their missiles. The destroyers are operating in... I think it's standard ASW formation. Which is interesting, they must be running lower on submersible assets than we thought..."

Well, he seems to know what he's talking about if nothing else.

After second pass, the Gaw begins to make it's retreat. Some parts of it appear to be on fire, but it doesn't seem to be in any serious distress.

Well, I think this mission didn't so much show that we're better on offense than defense as it showed that we're better on active defense than passive defense.

Instead of waiting for missiles to hit us in the future, we go out and hit the launching platforms instead. I mean, our defense plan was actually working pretty well at the beginning; it didn't really start to degrade until the sheer number of missiles coming in swamped the ability of our defenders to deal with them. Once the first suit or two got hit, the number of missiles getting through and the damage they caused were inevitably going to snowball.

So if we'd gone out there and hit even a few of the cruisers before they finished unloading their entire missile supply, the number of incoming missiles would have been reduced to where our defensive plan could deal with them.

... and there's my answer. Gotta love synchonisity.

As soon as you mount up, all MSM's which are part of the attack meet up at the sub-line. (what's left of it anyway.)
It takes about 10 minutes after you arrive for the rest of the forces to amass (No Grablo tonight, it's still being repaired.) before you all switch over to LD mode and mount a frontal assault on the enemy forces.

The plan is quick and dirty, first company will directly assault the enemy ASW destroyers, clearing a path for the rest, after a breach has been made it will support Second Company - which will finish off any submersible assets in the area and then in turn support 3rd company, who'se job it is to attack any remaining cruisers, frigates or any other target's of opportunity.

First Company will go in first, followed by second, then third.

WHICH COMPANY DO YOU WANT TO BE IN?

    >First Company. Is it too late to get Ruubens back into the Zaku Tank and looking for parts as said in these posts?

Nactmaren Unit hooks up with first company and helps lead the charge. As your target get's closer, your sonar picks up several targets, enemy subs and Fisheye's trying to target you. A couple of torpedoes are fired, but with no casualties. An Acguy loses an arm as has to fall back, but that's about it.

You reach Destroyers whislt close to the surface, below you you pick up the second force directly assault the enemy subs. But now your firing your torpedoes and beams into a destroyer, and the rest of your squad do the same. The ship crumples under the combined fire and explodes. You and Jolyne jink left, the rest of the squad jink right.
Jolyne uses her Megaparticle cannons to strafe the destroyers with her rapid firing Cannons.
Most of the time you only need to apply the Coup De Grace to them
You meet back up with your squad in about three minutes, having completed a circuit about the outer destroyer pickets.
    None have survived.

    KILLS:
    David: 3 Destroyers
    Jolyne: 5 Destroyer
    Zolomon: 4 Destroyers
    Ruubens: 3 Destroyers
Calvin: 1 Destroyer (He's still getting used to Marine MS and beam weapons.)

You have Jolyne, Ruubens and Calvin flank the retreating surface fleet, preventing their escape, whilst you order Zolomon to follow you as you dive to aid the 2nd detatchment.

It's a chaotic scene. One of the enemy subs is down already, and Fisheye's are attempting to mob the enemy forces, but they don't have the numbers, and it's degenerating into a close range brawl. You make use of your beams to take out four more balls apiece, and then attack an enemy sub as it attempts to retreat.
Zolomon narrowly manages to dodge a torpedo aimed at his face, before eventually closing to claw distance. He hulls the vessel from fore to stern whilst you cover him with your beam guns, and the submarine pops like a baloon.

    KILLS:
    David: 4 Balls
    Zolomon: 4 Balls, 1 Submarine

Seeing that the situation is now well in hand you surface to see how the sitation is going. You see the wrecks of three cruisers, and about 5 of them sporting white flags. You meet up with Jolyne.

"When they realised they couldn't escape, they surrendered. I think were pretty much done here sir. Shall we get back?"

You return to base to discover the Sub line deserted. You eventually find a lone squad of damaged Acguy's on patrol.

"What happened?" You ask when you get close.

"The enemy subs tried to flank us with a rear attack, luckily thanks to our sonar net being so good round the back, we saw them coming a mile off! It was little dodgy for a minute or two, but then the new Hygoggs that came in a few hours ago waded in... and those things are INSANE."

And given that they were considering mass-producing the Hildolfr, we might as well have Ookawara pass schematics for its evolved form on to the factories.

I second naming the Rhino in memory of Commodore Timon. When we fire all the weapons on that thing at a single target, we should call it:

    Timon's Revenge.
That or Timon Missile Massacre. Nah, the first one is better.

Also, Apologised? -I- liked the little thing we did with Hovis. I'm glad he got to take down a criminal. Also, us doing semi-spy work is cool. I always love when Incognito is around and his shenanigans abound. Thanks for another good game, mate.

The 603rd Technical Evaluation Unit, from IGLOO.

The two things they're known for are their testing of highly experimental weapons and the deaths of every single test pilot for those weapons.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the scavenger hunt side quest. Which would probably been an interesting thing to do as well, but when the commander asks to see you, you go. So we had to leave it to the others.

I sure hope we give the recon Zaku a tiger paint job and a Sniper Rifle soon in the future.

    Not bad looking suits there.

If we get to do that mission instead, though, we'll damn well capture the Alex for our own use.

If we manage to get it.... FUCK YES SUPRISE ARM GATTLINGS AND CHOBHAM ARMOR!

Alex was rape, Still, Unless we manage to get it during that mission it is pretty much moot, Seeing how it was delayed enough for it to never enter the war at all. And getting it would mean saving Bernie, Who was pretty much a Ace in making.

I mean what was it 3 or 4 deployments total and he goes toe to toe with a Gundam... IN A ZAKU!

We should recruit him into our team if we are given the chance.

Well, we just have to try and go after it earlier.

With any luck, Zeon will find out about it more quickly and therefore be able to capture the parts before they get shipped off of Earth; with Ookawara on our side, I have no doubt that we could get it assembled shortly after "acquiring" it for our own use.
