It is May 14th 0079 of the Universal Century. Zeon's invasion of Earth is well under way, and the majority of EF forces in Australia were either too cowardly or too battered by the initial fighting to effectively push back against the Zeon occupational forces, deciding instead to hole themselves up in their positions and let the spacenoids have their way. However, Brigadier General Warren Keller- a grizzled and decorated veteran who calls Australia home, refused to accept this situation. He quickly and decisively amassed what forces he could throughout the continent, consisting mostly of other Australian natives to whom the scars of Operation British are still fresh in their hearts and minds. This included you, Private Second Class Jag Rommel, anti-mobile suit infantry specialist of the Australian EFGF.

Two months after the initial invasion of Earth, Brigadier General Keller finally commences the operation to re-take Australia. The first part of the operation is to reclaim the city of Brisbane in hopes of regaining acess to a major port and thus opening up a lifeline back to the main Earth Federation forces. You partake in this operation and earn notable achievements after assisting in the destruction of two Zakus, saving the lives of half your squad, and bringing home a Zeon prisoner which provided valuable intel that opened the door to negotiations with the occupational forces in Brisbane.

Seeing this as a golden opportunity to not only accomplish their goal but also conserve the strength of his forces for the future battles to come, Bridagier General Keller orders you to journey to the heart of the enemy to convince the Zeon commander to stand down. You accept this mission, seeing the value in conserving lives on both sides and finding yourself trusting the word of an enemy soldier.

The negotiations go well enough and you succeed in winning the city back without any further bloodshed. And now, as Federation forces begin to roll in to Brisbane uncontested, you decide to stay at the Zeon HQ to help ensure that the surrender goes smoothly.

"It's not over until it's over.." You tell Gaspa, as you think of what you can do to best assist as you watch the Zeon soldiers hesitantly lay down their arms.

"Whatever you choose to do, I'll have your back." Gaspa says reassuringly.

>Link back up with your squad. They should be here soon, and were given orders to monitor the remaining Zakus in case any pilots decide that they'd rather go down fighting.
>Roam the base and ensure that Federation soldiers are not mistreating the soon-to-be prisoners as retaliation against Operation British and the invasion.
>Follow Helena, who is on her way to speak with a minor splinter group that refused to accept the order to surrender and are holing themselves up in the barracks.

"I'm going to roam the base for a bit, make sure everything is being done according to code." you tell Gaspa. Your forces may have won, but the hostility that builds up during battle doesn't just evaporate. You also know there are those in the Federation who still cling to a bitter resentment, and for good reason. You've felt it too, the pain and emptiness and loss that comes with having everything you've known and loved violently disappear from one cruel act by the Spacenoids. You've worked overcome your anger and your hatred, but can the countless Earthnoids that carry the same pain in their hearts all say the same? You feel a sense of uneasiness hanging in the air that you just can't shake.

"...Got it. I understand. I'll head over that way then, we can cover more ground that way." Gaspa says, pointing the opposite direction you intended to go. "I'll explain to Yunnus too, just do what you gotta do my man."

You nod, appreciating your ever supportive friend and begin your patrol. You walk through the base starting with the eastern side past the command post, watching as Zeon soldiers hesitantly begin filing into organized lines per some Federation officer's instructions. Other Federation soldiers stand by alongside the officer, and you can see the way they grip their rifles tightly as if they're expecting the fight to resume any moment. You watch silently, ready to jump in and mediate in case anything happens.. thankfully, nothing does. Several tense minutes with an underwhelming resolution, but it satisfies you all the same.

You continue your patrol, seeing similar situations throughout the base. Despite the uneasy feeling permeating throughout, the surrender is going relatively well. You breathe a sigh of relief, though it doesn't last long.

"Got a situation here, J man." you hear Gaspa's voice flow into your ear from your comms. "Friendlies are roughing up some of the captured Zeon troops. I tried to put a stop to it myself but they're not having it. Could use that silver tongue of yours." he explains.

"Copy. Location?" You reply.

"West side, past the hangars, in a sort of alleyway between two red brick buildings. You uh, probably won't miss it." he says, and you can assume why from the ruckus you hear in the background.

"On my way." you say, and bolt into a sprint towards the direction of the hangars. Buildings and soldiers pass by you as you run, only stopping to catch your breath once you get close. A minute or so after passing the hangar bay, you begin to hear some of the commotion you heard over the comms, and push your way through a small crowd of tan uniformed soldiers cheering at something barely hidden in the alleyway.

Once you make your way to the front of the crowd, you see Gaspa right away, trying to get in between a handful of Federation and Zeon soldiers. It's easy to tell right away what happened, as you notice the bloody fists on the snickering Feddie soldiers, and the bruised and battered Zeon soldiers across. One of them is on the floor, coughing and spitting out blood.

"What's going on here?" you cut in, and all eyes dart to you.

"Who the hell're you?" the lead of the trio of Feddie soldiers asks. He approaches you and sizes you up. "Private, eh? You need a few more ranks and a few more inches on you to be talkin' to me with that tone a yers. You one of 'em spacenoid sympathizers?"

You're not sure how to answer the question. You hate Zeon for what they did to Australia, but the Zeon men and women you saw today weren't atrocity committing monsters, they were just.. people, pulled into the ocean of violence by the tides of war. "These people did nothing to you. Why don't we just do what we were all ordered to do?" you offer peacefully.

These people did NOTHING?" the leader of the trio repeats. "My mother was in Sydney. My little brother shot dead in the first days o' the invasion. You got the nerve to tell me they did nothing?!"

"It's.. easy to lump people together. But the actions of some aren't a reflection of the whole. So how about yo-"

Your words are interrupted, and you find yourself on the floor with a rattling head and an aching cheek. You take a split second to gather your thoughts and re-orient yourself. You look to your left where the hit came from, and you see one of the big guy's cronies smirking with satisfaction as he rubs his fist and the trio begin to laugh. You pick yourself back up, and decide to..

>Keep your cool, and resolve this with words
>Accept that words won't always work, and resolve this with fists
>Other - write in?

Sorry for the long wait bros, my work life's been leaving me feeling too burnt out to write, but I'm trying to push through it since I've got tons of fun ideas for the quest that I want to eventually share with you guys.

Lash out - verbally.
"Are you some kind of fucking animal!?! You think I don't care!? I lost my whole family! My sister was getting married! And you think punching prisoners will get them back?! I will not let you jeopardize the peace that I won, that I negotiated! You're gonna have to kill me first if you want to ruin this with your shitshow!"
Maybe reach for our service weapon if we have one on us, but don't draw it unless they stop listening.

3 weeks with no check in is a little dry man... I love the quest and glad I kept it on the watchlist, but even just "sorry no post yet" every few days would be better.

>even just "sorry no post yet" every few days would be better.

I'll keep that in mind. There were a few times I thought to give the heads up but I was afraid of disappointing everyone who would see a new post thinking it's an update, only for it to be me saying to wait longer. I guess even that can be better than nothing though. Thanks for your patience, I'm learning how to be better at this as I go.

Nice Write-in. I started on the next post, but I'm pretty beat so I'll work on finishing it little by little over the next day or two.

Post is coming a bit late due to the past few days being busier than I thought it'd be but I'll have it posted sometime tomorrow or Tuesday. Sorry for the wait guys.

The pain on your face throbs as your mind catches up with your body, many thoughts and emotions melting into one inside you. As everything swirls inside you, one emotion stands out from the rest, being the most powerful sensation you feel at this moment.. anger. And suddenly, you snap. "What the HELL is wrong with you?! Are you really a Federation soldier, or some kind of fucking animal!?!" you shout, your voice almost breaking as you lash out. Everyone around you is silent, taken off guard by the outburst, but you don't care, and you continue spilling your thoughts. "You don't think I care? You think you're the only one who's lost someone? I lost EVERYTHING. Everyone I loved. My sister.. she was just about to get married.. They were all so happy, so excited for what the future was about to bring. But they were robbed of that, and so was I, and so were you, and so has everyone else here! And you think.. you think just punching prisoners is going to bring any of them back? You're a goddamn fool." you say bitterly as you slowly but subconsciously reach for your pistol.

Gaspa sees this, and runs over, putting a hand on your shoulder and shaking you to try and snap you out of it. "Woah, buddy, I think you need to calm down. I think they've heard enough."

"No. No!" You say, slapping his hand away. "I will NOT let these idiots jeopardize the peace that I won, that I negotiated! I won't let things end the same way again. You're going to have to kill me first if you ruin this with your shit show!"

Everyone is silent, Federation and Zeon men alike, after your outburst. The man in front of you opens his mouth, but before he can utter out any words, another voice enters the scene.

"Atten...TION!" a feminine but powerful and familiar voice calls out, and instinctively your mind snaps back to your training and you stand at attention, along with every other Federation soldier present.

A tall woman strides confidently past you as she puts herself at the center of the scene, turning around to show a face you know all too well.

"Drill sergeant?!" you blurt out in disbelief. "What're you doing here?"

"I don't recall giving you permission to speak. Drop and give me fifty!" the woman shouts, and her intimidating presence spurs you into action. You find yourself on the floor doing push ups, and you're not even sure why. The other Federation soldiers murmur amongst themselves as they stand frozen at attention, and it's evident they all share your same instinctive fear of this woman from the harsh, grueling academy days.
>>
>>5970988
"I don't recall giving ANY of you permission to speak! One hundred laps around the premises, NOW!" she shouts, and the crowd quickly disperses with multiple 'yes ma'ams', running faster and with greater fear than they would if a Zaku was staring down at them. "...not you, you imbeciles!" she shouts again, and the Zeon prisoners stop in place as they halt the beginning of their sprint. She shakes her head and locks eyes with Gaspa, who also tenses up.

"You. Take these prisoners where they need to be." the woman commands.

Gaspa salutes in response, running away with the prisoners. "Good luck, buddy." he says to you with a half whisper on his way out.

The woman, your former drill sergeant, now stands directly above you, watching silently as you continue your push ups. "Tired?" she asks, but you dare not fall for it.

"No, ma'am!" you say as you continue.

"Good. Then give me fifty more." she says.

"Yes ma'am.." you say begrudgingly, continuing with your given command for several long minutes.

....one.. hundred..!" you eventually announce, collapsing on the ground as your former drill sergeant watches over you.

"...calmed down now?" she asks, her voice feeling just a bit softer than before.

"Y...yeah.." you say between gasps for air, now too exhausted to even remember what you were so worked up about.

"Good." she answers, tossing you a bottle of water that you barely manage to catch with your aching muscles. "I'm disappointed in you, Rommel. I would have expected you to handle that better."

You sit up, taking a moment to catch your breath before you get back on your feet. "You're right, I should have. I just.. I couldn't stand watching those soldiers act the way they did. We should be working to end the war and animosity, not fan its flames."

"Not everyone will see things the way you do. In fact, I can guarantee that there are those in the upper echelons of the Federation that directly oppose your views. My advice? Just keep your head down, and stay alive until the war ends."

"You know that's not enough for me." you reply with a sense of conviction. "Anyway.. what are you doing here, ma'am?"

"...I suppose not. I answered a friend's call for help, so I'm putting aside academy duties to get back into the army. After seeing that display, I can see why he wanted me around. You maggots clearly need to be whipped back into shape. That was a pitiful display of what it means to be a Federation soldier."

"...You're.. not wrong..." you say, finding yourself unable to disagree after replaying the events in your mind.

Halsford stares at you for a few moments, and you stare back. Halsford is taller than you, with an air of unbreakable pride and superiority constantly emanating from her. She's beautiful, but any attraction one could feel for her is quickly and mercilessly drowned out by the sheer intimidating presence she gives off.

"Uh.. what is it?" you ask, finally breaking the awkward silence.
>>
>>5970989
"..Nothing. I've been briefed on the situation up until now, but I want a detailed report on my desk before the day ends for a clearer picture. Understood?"

"Understood! ...Wait, huh?" you say, confused.

"You, along with the remaining anti-MS squads, will now be reporting to me." Halsford states.."

Oh, man.." you mutter, already imagining how this will be.

"Hm?"

"I-I said yes ma'am!" you blurt out.

"....Sure. If anyone else causes a scene, you can use the authority of my name to diffuse the situation. And.. good work so far, soldier." she stops and says, before continuing on her way again.

"Uh.. Thank you, ma'am." You say, feeling a sense of disbelief that the drill sergeant that everyone associates with the word 'demon' in fearful whispers is actually letting a compliment escape from her lips. You remember the hell she put you through during training and shudder as you watch her leave. Once she's out of sight you feel that you can finally relax yourself again, exhaling to release the tension. You spend the rest of the day continuing your patrol to ensure that the rest of the day can pass without any more problems, and it does. You mentioned Halsford's name one or two times, and just uttering the name was enough to put any uncooperative soldier back in line. You can't help but admire, and also feel a new sense of fear, for your former drill sergeant and the reputation she seems to have.

As the sun begins to set, the day begins to wind down as most of the PoW's have been escorted from the base. With just a bit of time left before you have to make your report, you decide to..
