A world where might makes right. A world of Jade and Gold, of Phoenix and Dragons, of Pills and Talismans, of Martial and Spiritual arts.
A world where diligent training yield strength, meaning freedom. A world where loneliness means death, meaning social chains.
A world still unfair, as the ones reaching the heavens are most likely born rich - be it political riches of the aristocrats, power of secret knowledges and hidden realms of clans, or lucky enough to be born one-in-a-thousand genius.
This is not your case. You're a confused children - barely not a toddler anymore.
As some other, your mother sold you for a lowly amount to be another seed evaluated and either nurtured into growth or discarded. Already, her physical features are blurring in your mind - the effect of the memory seal applied on your mind when you cross the gates leading to the courtyard where the examination takes place.
Already, groups are forming; gathering around various instructors, showing the basic of various activities to curious children; recording their performances. Sieving natural affinities.

>Character building : Are you a boy or a girl?
>Each anon can write-in a cultivation-like activity to test for natural affinities toward things. Each of them will be undertaken by your character, giving you an idea of his potential talent.

Activities example : Gazing at a candle until it's completely burnt to evaluate concentration, running laps to test stamina, handling a trinket that react to fire affinity, getting punched in the chest to test for physical resistance, recognize a spiritual grass blade amidst looks-alike, mix simple ingredients to create a basic Blood and Qi pill

You first head toward the pens holding several type of animal.
An onyx-blacked hair, amber-eyed, squat and tanned man address the dozen kids around, telling you to take a cabbage in the goat's trough.
A guy rushes, yells to one of the Ovin to not stand in its path, fetch a cabbage and dashes back. Emboldened, most of the other kids rush in the pen. You abstain, having quite the idea of what's going to happen.
Startled by the noise, the rush, and even the one assaulting directly the goat, the situation degenerates quickly into a brawl - interrupted by a young girl walking in while humming a tune, freezing beasts and kid alike while she picks naturally her cabage and walks away, fighting resuming in her wake.
"Why aren't you trying?, asks the man in charge
- They've got enough cabage. I'll wait for them to calm down and will just move in slowly."
The examinator nods, you do just as you said and bring back the prize. Your display of beast-taming potential was not the most impressive, but you feel you could fit in with those kind of tasks.

Next up is a collection of Flying Tamarins munching on apples. The collection of kids cat-call or whistle at them, but to your greater surprise (and pleasure), you are among the three that succeed to that endeavor - the two other being the still-humming girl and the boy that intimidated a monkey into doing what he wanted.
Then, you go toward the aviary. To your greater frustration, you never manage to catch up with the birds.
Next, you go inside in a first room. Your eyes close, you have to focus to hear the footstep of the cat on the beams above your head. You succeed quite way at that particular endeavor - for the first time of the day, you feel like the best of the handful of kids but the scary boy and the charming girl are not in the room.

Then, you proceed to a room filled in a purple mist, when you are assaulted with laughing bald facing hurling toward you in all directions. Terrified, you feel the pressure unbearable and immediately scuttle out.
You stumble into a robe-wearing man with a strange blue hat, that hands you a tablet with shiny colors and swirling shapes. Engrossed in the spiritual kaleidoscope, the objet in your hands is yanked away
"Let it go, kid!", then you can hear him muttering about rarely seeing people so weak to illusions.

You need a breath of fresh air. Stepping outside, yet another guy in robe (although different cut and with yellow and red tons instead of blue and white) direct you toward the middle of the courtyard and makes you stare at the sun - wait, on your left is the intimidating dude... Is he insulting the sun to get it to be less bright?
The worst part is it seems to work. When you take your gaze out, you can see it's a bit less bright around that guy. The evaluator seems quite happy with the time you lasted, as he directs you toward a bowl of rice where you have to pluck sands out.
>>
You abandon the taks when more than half of participants are done while you're a bit above halfway done.

It's around half of the day, and you're starving. Good thing : a few priests in golden robes, shaved head, and donning collars with wooden spheres are giving kids bowls of food.
You're really intrigued in shrimp - coming from inside the land, it's the first time you are offered such a food. The unique smell and taste, as well as the texture (firm, albeit delicate, a tad chewy) conquer your heart on the first bite.
"Disgusting! Shrimps are nasty and smelly!
- Well, I like them.
- That mean YOU'RE nasty and smelly!"
Is that guy looking for a fight?
"Oh, you dare stand and not lower your gaze in front of the great Xiao Niar?"
You kindly give him what he's looking for with a haymaker in the cheek while he's boasting. The punch sends him flying and crashing down, winning you a couple laugh in the assembly and a frown from the monks.
"Coward! You ambushed the great Xiao Niar! That lucky hit was the only time you will touch me!"
You faint the same right hook and kick him strongly in the shin, sending him on the ground clenching his leg and proving him wrong. You're a bit tempted to caress his ribs with your feet while you're at it, but the monks are chasing you away.

A guy in armor grasps your arm.
"A bit shoddy, but nice potential. Let me see you what you're worth with a blade in your hands."
Turns out, not much - the sword jumps from your hand after a first strike on a wooden pillar. You hold your own better with a saber and a bow - although it's nothing to be particular proud of. But of what you tried, the one that worked the best for you was the spear.
You're not a genius - not like that other boy that can shot two bullseyes-arrows in the same draw of his bow - but you're pretty sure you heard the guy in armor mutter something about you being "naturally gifted" in the way of the spear.
You also want to try the other weapons, but the armored man tells you to try your hand at Elemental tests.

In that direction, you walk in a room where they blindfold you and spank you. You feel deeply uncomfortable and scamper away as fast as you can.
You stumble in a hidden courtyard with strange people in dark robes handing magnifying glass to kids and making them yelling something stupid at ants while burning them. You don't have much interest on keeping doing that, while a pale girl on your right is laughing maniacally while the ants are dying not only under the death ray but in its trail too.
Moving on, you step in a room. You open the door to a corridor with light dying out. Scampering toward a door, you open it and fell into water in absolute darkness.
Drawn down, you struggle while the oppressive weight squeezes the air away from you, until a hand grasp your collar and pulls you away.
"Looks like you have really poor affinity with Water - or Darkness for that matter"

Shivering, you go back out. There's a bit of time for a couple more trials.
You start with the woman in ninja attire, that order you to mimic her voice while she takes a range of accents and intonations. Your poor performance makes her shooing you away.
Finally, you walk to the people with Lotus-embroidered robes. They make you sit on a wooden pillar with a lotus carved in it, placing cups of water on your knee, head and elbows.
Then, the pillar begins to shift. Water splashes on you, while the lotus stays carved - a few of your neighbors have it turning into a flower that shields them from the disturbance of the pillar.
You quickly fell. This conclude your day of testing.

In the end, of the various guilds and sects present today, a few are interrested in you - which is frankly nice; at least you're not like those kids that are accepted by nobody.

You chose to join the Eastern Province branch of Tamers of Hundred Beasts
You know you're not a genius. However, your performance in beast taming was good enough for them to be quite interested in you - maybe your path to greatness would be befriending powerful beasts and make them fight for you?

The thousand of kids are split among the 10-or-so sects.
Most selective ones are the crazy bastards that made you burn ants and the also-crazy ones making you drop in the dark water, followed by the Lotus-Pillar guys.
The Army and the Versatile Harmony Quest are accepting heaps of people, while the Beast Tamers are on the restrictive side - 20 of disciples have been chosen.
The particularly striking ones are the humming girl and the angry dude. Even with your limited world knowledge, you recognize they are something else.
Still, you are pretty confident you're on par or better than the rest of the class. All of you head toward the pen, when you are asked to take a few of the beast to corral to your new home.
Of course, the girl hops and hum, half dancing while taking in her wake a myriad of birds, rabbits, mouse, cat and dog on the smaller side, while the boy shout at two colossal hounds and a fully-grown tiger, making them cower and advance crawling belly-down.
You gaze at the various animals around and feel thunderstruck when your gaze meet the brown eye of an Alezan foal.
Like magnet, you walk toward the youngling, your hand extended. He steps once, then twice toward you - and nuzzle its head on your hand.
"Looks like you won't need an Halter for that one."
The onyx-hair, amber-eyed examiner nods approvingly.
"Come on. Let's see if you have other strong affinities... Is something bothering you, kid?"
You gaze around. You're not the most skilled one. You're far from struggling, too.
"Why helping me? - the man smiles.
- This is the best use of my time. The two genius don't need me right now. The other will take twice the effort to nurture. You are the best suited to receive help right now for the better future of the Sect."
Under the man's guidance, you tour the pens. Farm animals follow docilely, albeit a bit reluctantly.
"You're not fated toward them. You can order them easily due to their domestic mentality, but this would be a waste of your talents."
The various sized aquariums makes you take a step back - still feeling yourself drowning from earlier, you prefer staying away from anything seawater-related for now. You have way better affinity with forest delvers.
The thunderstruck-scene replays similarly with a wolf cub. Then, a viper coil on your left arm while an hawk roost on your right shoulder.
"You might take more with you, but that would be pushing your luck. Use your Inner Voice to reach them - the same you talked the Flying Tamarins with"
With that last word of advice, he leaves you to go help other youngsters.

The viper, order it to present its fangs without biting. If we can do this, we can be of use to the sect gathering poisons. Also its good practice for suppressing the instinct of our partners

This is something of dominance. The wolf came to us because he wanted to, but that doesn't mean we have all the control over him. If we can order him to do this act of submission and let us rub it's belly without too much time since we met, that's a really good sign, either our control is really fucking good, or the wolf is already going to be tamed without much work

Following the man's advice, you Talk to your new companions, attempting to set a few orders.
Can you get the wolf to sit? Yes. The Viper to present its fangs? This works to.
You feel relieved - this dissipate the last doubt you had : you will make yourself useful to the sect.
You set your goal on harder tasks. Getting the wolf to lie down and show his belly? He growls and refuse.
Send the Hawk circling the caravan? Your voice reach it; he soars.
In the meantime, you work on settling a calm relationship among the foal and the cub. This is also a success - but you think the animals have been conditioned for that beforehand.
You're feeling bolder. As the Hawk is letting a piercing shriek to let you know he's back - and tear a bit your shoulder when he lands, drawing blood - you send the cub to fetch a bone.
The girl slow her pace, you overtake her. She seems nice.
"Wanna be my friend?
- Sure. My name's Ai; nice to meet your!"
That was easy.
What next? you're a bit bored; you wish you could communicate better with the Hawk to see by his eyes or ask it how far are the sect's ground.
A reckless idea tickle your mind when you hear the scary boy yell at his retinue.
"Time for a double pungent mud attack. Hawk, airborn; Foal, Circumvent!"
Your troops disperse.
"What's this! Scram!" A gaze and shout startle the Hawk, making him miss by a couple feet. The ennermy is weak. You think really hard the timing is perfect. The foal attack - two spheres bounce on the target's feet.
"YOU! IT'S YOU! I'LL MAKE YOU PAY FOR THE DISHONOUR UPON THIS DHUNDAN KEPA!"
Here he comes, beelining for you. You brace for impact, and curse you lack of prevision with the cub away - a searing pain emerge in your left ear.
A lithe and nimble elder, with piercing gaze and hooked noise holds both of you. Raising his voice :
"I don't care who started it. I don't care who did what. The only thing I care is I don't want to see, or hear, of you two fighting ever again. You'll both be on manure duty until the end of your Hundred Day Foundation training. After all, being in deep shit together is the better recipe for close bonds."

Both of you are sheepish. You ignore each other on the end of the trip.
The wolf comes back empty-pawed; you're pretty sure the Hawk that caught a mouse was laughing at him.
>>
Soon, you make it to the sect itself.
First thing that surprise you is a lack of wall. Various building house myriads of animals. The adult makes you drop the menagerie in various building where they stay with there kin, and guide you toward a mess where you all eat, then toward bunk beds where you spend the night.
In the morning, you all are gathered in a courtyard where there explain the usual day and your duties. Wake up before dawn, go check your assigned beasts before breaking fast, then calisthenics. Once warmed up, you'll go back to caring to your assigned beasts and the sect common beasts until night. Supper, rince and repeat.
That, and shovelling manure for you and Dhundan Kepa.

It does not take two days for you to understand your Body Condition is quite weak. You lack strength, stamina, balance in regard to the other novices.
Are you already falling behind?

>Spend your spare time training your body. Your duties will suffer from it.
Mimicking animals like >>5885756 said makes sense. I don’t think we’ll be flapping wings like a hawk though.

Make it better by involving said animals in your training to increase your personal affinity with them. Chase wolf pups to teach them how to fight, have the hawks swoop down on you while doing work to make sure you stay alert at all times, have snapping turtles strike at you to train your reactions.
>Ask someone for help
Some of the normies. We can trade our thoughts on growing your affinity with animals for their tricks to train their body cultivation. As the third-best, we can be the “approachable” one of our group for juniors.

You can't afford falling behind before the foundation stage, really.
Duties can wait a bit - this is the first week joining the sect; this should give you a bit of leeway, right?
Your day is split among the stable, the wolf's dens where the mundane wolf live as a few big packs, the aviary, and the snake pit. Also, shoveling manure.
>Decision of training with your animals + Leeway of newly joined - of the hook relatively easy for slacking of on your duties
Instead of taking care of each and every animal, you focus solely on the one you've bonded with.
The wolf-master seems to appreciate this course of action (hard to tell; the gaze of the salt-and-peppered hair middle-age woman is frightening);
However, you can feel the unvoiced disapproval from the Hawk Master (which is the one that punished you for the incident) and the Horse Master, a tall and broad shouldered man.
The only one voicing displeasure is the Snake Master, a light-brown athletic woman with countless braids. Still, most kids assigned to the Snake Pit are too scared of the reptile to approach them, letting you get away with only bonding with what you now think is "your" viper.
You exercise by imitating your companion and extensively playing with them. Flailing your arms like the hawk, running with the foal, slithering on the ground with the snake, bouncing like the wolf.
Despite your severe lack of talent regarding body energy, putting twice the work pays of and in less than two weeks, you're slowly catching up with the second-last kid.
You tried to trade pointers with some of your fellow disciples : Yi Norm, a brown little boy as well as Sin Din, a horse-loving little girl and her twin sister Man Din, which wander around all beast Master without favorite creatures yet.
However, they seem to perceive you as a duffer and want nothing to do with you.
Last point is the Manure shovelling : you're stuck in the building with Dhundan Kepa until the task is done. He resents you for the punition AND for the fact he's working five time faster than you, leading him to clean most of the filth.

>Apologize to Dhundan Kepa
A couple time in the first weeks, you attempted to overcome the fear seizing you when attempting to get closer and talk to the other kid while shoveling dung. You failed each time.
Good Mental Resistance (Sun-gazing test) and great test roll for this particular attempt
However, third time's the charm. You step closer, and a stare weighting you down like the whole saddlery of the imposing draft horse you had to move around a couple time for your lateness turn your movement into a slog.
Still, you take a slow and small step crawling ever so closer to your goal. A hint of surprise lace in the pure anger of the gaze, then the pressure double.
Still, you take another as slow and as small step, inching forward to reach him. The anger mask placed on Dhundan's face fissures, but the glimpse is too brief to catch the deeper feeling.
"Stop here. You'll regret it.
- It's alright. Sorry." - he stares silently - "Sorry for making animals crapping you. I was just playing."
He's still standing, mute. The storm rages against your mind in unpredictable bursts, followed by calmer light knocking.
"...Why?...
- I was wrong. So I have to make excuses.
- No. Why aren't you running away like the others? Only the masters talk to me, and I can always feel them angry. You're not angry. I don't understand."
The pressure gradually soften, until coming back hitting as a charging ram. You take a step back. Gritting your teeth, you muster all of your willpower to endure, overcome, and slowly reclaims the lost ground.
Both of you stare at each other without a word.
"Not over yet? I don't have all day!"
Both of you quickly go back to shoveling.

The next morning, the body preparation instructor tells you during daily practice that he felt your Mental Energy rised up and to keep up with your effort.
You quickly link the two events. Later, while scrubbing the sticky guano in the Aviary, you approach him again.
"What do you want.
- Talking with you. Actually, the pressure when we talk is great training for me.
- ... Pressure? ..."
Wait... He doesn't realize he's scary and angry at everything?
"Let's make a deal. In exchange to me getting train by your pressure, I can maybe tell and help on how it's working?"
Pressure recede.
"That mean you'll keep talking with me? Even after we are not punished any more?"

Turns out the little tomfoolery engaged toward Dhundan Kepa might have been one of the best decision you took in your life so far.
>>
Two months have passed since you joined the Eastern Province branch of Tamers of Hundred Beasts
Meanwhile, thanks to your efforts, you're selected with around a third of the ones that joined at the same time than you (including every named child) as well as most of the other Novices already under training when you joined the sect.
However, you didn't progressed much in the way of animal handling.
The first step in the road of cultivation is The Hundred Days of Foundation Building
You are of the perfect age to take this step on the way as you still have a mouthfull of Inborn True Qi.
>Inborn True Qi : No bottleneck for 3 year (until Third Stage)
Without this breath of Inborn true qi, even if one builds one’s foundation, cultivation would be fraught with difficulties.
The required amount of time and resources spent on every advancement would be at least twice as much more than those who completed their Foundation Building before eight.

The steps are as follow :
>First, physical training for 2 to 6 month to increase the body's Qi and Blood Vigor
>The second step is the consumption of an elixir known as "body tempering liquid".
>Use a Body Tempering Technique to raise Qi & Blood
>Use a meditation technique to capture Qi&Blood strands in the Heart Acupoint

You will need both a Body Tempering Technique and a Meditation technique. Your sect will provide several options, linked to animals.
>Good write-in last time
Actually, the way you trained with your favored animals is close to a body tempering technique. The Masters have remarked it and stepped-in to give you access to the following
>The Jade Wolf's Body, an overall balanced Body Technique
>The Armored Cavalier's Defense, a static collection of move focusing your Body Energy on Defense
>The Hawk's Wide Ballet, a dance-like collection of movements
>The Water-Snake's Swiftness, an elemental body technique developing Agility

For now, you will have trouble to pick more than one - after all the Snake Master pulled you apart and had quite harsh words expecting you to work diligently on your duties and stop jerking your own snake around once she'll show you how to properly do it; herself or one of the other masters.

You'll also need a meditation technique. However, this one will be the standard version of the sect,

For some reason, I just read the Blood Vigor requirement next to the Heart Acupoint and I just came up with this weird idea, and maybe the scenes with the Cobra supersoldiers in the 2009 movie had something to do with this train of thought.

I also thought that maybe either going mystical xianxia Cardio training could work, or maybe going around the woods, getting bitten by smaller red ants and increasingly other venomous insects and animals, paired with eating poisonous or venomous plants or fruit could work with those kinds of trainings, or maybe develop some ability to reject poisons

You're ill-suited to body-cultivation, one of the 3 pillars of cultivation. There is still Mental energy, which you kinda find a cheat for and Spiritual energy, which you don't know yet how proficient you are. However, you won't hit bottlenecks for 2 year and 10 months; and you joined a sect that fit you quite well where you had good luck regarding the potential totems for your character, allowing to work around your strength and weaknesses to keep your character arc interresting. This is Normal Cultivator Quest - where your skilled, but average character will attempt to navigate to the pinacle of cultivation among freaks, cheater, and other Mary-sues

You choose the Technique named the Hawk's Wide Ballet. Over the course of the next week, you spend your free time with the Hawk master to learn the movements.
He instruct you with the physical part of the technique as well as the spiritual and intent : you learn that this technique is composed of 18 figures, that can be combined in the order you want.
Performing those movements take a wide space : around 15 steps in each direction. You have to perform the dance with an Hawk, which is not an issue for you - your feathered companion learns at your side what's expected of it.
This Body-Tempering dance features open-hand brush imitating graciously the wings of the hawk, as well as a good deal of coordination.
Soon, The Hawk master deems you ready. You are given a small porcelain white pot finely painted with the 33 beasts in blue, and are instructed to drink the liquid.
You sniff. Dire mistake. The elixir is pungent, acrid, strongly-herbal scented and the smell buries in your nose.
Still, with the Hawk Master on your side to monitor your first real cultivation, you take a swig and swallow the precious thick gooey black mouthful of elixir allocated to you.
The taste is worst than the smell. Then, your throat starts to hurt - the spicy concoction lights a fire in your throat, making you clutch it with both hands.
"Don't waste time! Wings Unfurling!"
Listening to the Hawk master, you turn your clutch into cross hand on your chest extending vertically elbows-first while the Hawk circles you.
Just in time for the sensation to turn warm and fuzzy in your stomach, diffusing as wanting to be let out. Want sated by the movements you're undertaking.
Something happens in the tip of your fingers. The energy inside your belly rushed through your arms, extending over there, flattening grass as if you were, indeed, a giant hawk exerting a mighty wingbeat propelling into flight.
"Soaring Ascent! Swooping Dive!"
Three moves in, and you're already reaching your limit, drenched in a dark, sticky sweat. You've been warned of it : your body is rejecting impurities.
This confirms it : this technique is quite well suited to you, as show your first success in body cultivation.
You feel your heart beating and thumping, with residual spiritual energy overflowing in every vein and artery.
You successfully created 3 strands of Qi and Blood, a satisfying result for a first real attempt at a body technique.
You can't go farther in your body cultivation technique : you sit down, close your eyes, and focus on using your sect's Spiritual Meditation Technique : the Way of the Spiritual Beast Whisperer
>>
You perceive yourself surrounded by your four companions, with the Hawk how-so-little brighter, in a kingdom of gray emptiness.
The next step is to guide the strands of Qi and Blood in your heart aperture. You don't immediately perceive said aperture - by the time you focus on the glass-like sphere you now see in your spiritual self, a first strand have dissipated back in your body.
You send the Hawk to quickly grasp the second one, but the brusque approach ripped the second strand when the talons touch it. You makes the bird of prey catch the third one more gently, guiding it to the aperture, when you stumble into a sizeable problem : you can't find an opening. You press the strand against the
glass sphere, hoping the aperture will catch it, but this is a miss. The strand starts to dissolve. You slide it across the sphere, to no further result. Finally, you find the opening - in the top half of the aperture, directed toward your spine, as the strand frays.
You desperately attempt to shove it, but it's too late. You've missed by a couple seconds.

"This is unfortunate. You'll better remember that the road of cultivation is hard. No step toward the Heaven's pinnacle is free."

This conclude your first session of cultivation. Of course, you benefited from it as your body condition improved. However, at the eye of the sect, your first attempt is not successful as you haven't even started to fill your heart Aperture.
The worst part, you know you've been unlucky, that you were damn close missed the roll by 4 percent, and that this technique is suited to you.
Of course, Ai and Dhundan have succeeded perfectly.

Body Tempering Liquid is a rare and expansive resource. Your failure means you won't get more of it before next month - an eternity away, that will turn the gap between you and the geniuses into a rift.
Maybe you can court favor to someone (another disciple, a master?) to decrease the wait to your next attempt? Or just accept your mediocre fate and wait?

>Ask the Snake Master if being bitten by a Snake and forcing the venom out of our bloodstream is a valid body tempering technique or if it's some kids foolishness that I just have
"This is an as valid test as any to test Poison Affinity. But that's stupidly dangerous at your current realm. First, gather Qi and Blood in your heart aperture. Then, turn it into True Qi. That's the minimum point to materialize Energy Qi."

You wake up bothered by a full bladder. You get out of bed, and go outside before being pushed by an empressed Yi Norm.
You hide a smirk : good. You weight for him to release a bit of pressure before stepping on his right.
"[You] Oh, you dare to challenge me Yi Norm? The other day defeat have not been sufficient?
[Yi Norm] - Scram! I'm the best at this!
[You] - Ah? Last time, Man Din reached the farthest. How does it feel, getting beaten by a girl at this boy game?"
[Man Din] - I beated you up too! And I can do it again this morning!
[Sin Din] - Go, Sis!"
You keep bantering while having your daily childish bout. Dhundan Kepa silently joined the contest. Good. Other haven't remarked. Looks like your training is bearing fruits for him too.

With that bout of harmless fun, you also strengthened the case you'll be defending later. Arming yourself with resolve, you grit your teeth and mentally rehearse your plea.
You pondered, hesitated. In the end, you think your best chance was directly asking the Master which seems to like you the most, the Wolf Master. She's rough in her training, maybe the harshest in her approach (even if the Horse master is the most intransigent).
Still, she have genuinely as a priority the well-being and growth of her disciples (unlike the other woman-master, the Snake master, which seems to generally disdain pupils). Your strategy is simple : strike a conversation with a few question that you have, then
> Ask the Wolf Master why did SHE liked that we focused on one of the wolfs?
"It's simple, really. Can a young kid really take care propelly of more than one member of a species? In addition to learning to know this individual, you will have to learn how to deal with the species at a whole."
>If wolfs comes in packs, we would think that he would be more pleased if we focused on a group instead of only one wolf
"Mammals have a deep personnal bond, so it will be better for it to have your full attention. Besides, You're too wet behind the ears to be a true Pack Leader - and you kinda have a pack; one of various species, dontcha?"
>>
" I have one more question. No, not a question. A request.
- Go on?
- I deserve a second attempt with Body Tempering Liquid. I know I miss the first, and I won't blame anyone or anything except me. But I understood what I did wrong. I need to try again. And this is for the good of the sect, too."
Her face turns into a mask. That's not good. Not good at all.
"I'm spending time with Dhundan Kepa. He is a peerless prospect, but is ill-socialized and seems to be prone to experience heart demons or fall to the Unorthodox or Demonic way if this is not remedied.
Me being around him and getting him used to peers his own age can only be beneficial for the Sect. I know I'm not a genius. I know I won't be a peerless master. But for him to really become one, he'll need dear comrade. Thus, letting me fall behind is a dangerous choice."
Some way too slow seconds of silence crank your stress up while she's still impassible.
"You should have asked this to your technique master."
Silence again. Your hope is dwindling.
"I'll give you one drop. Less than half of half of a normal amount. The rest will depend on you. Come back here once your duties are down before the evening meal."
Your blood rush and you feel your energy raise under the excitation and prospect - raising almost enough for Qi and Blood strands to form, or so you feel. Hope is back.

As promised, you meet her in secrecy. she hands you the precious vial, which indeed have a pitiful amount remaining.
You gulp the medicine without any consideration for taste or smell, feel its still-surprising burn in your throat diffusing in your body. You're already in motion.
Wings Unfurling. Soaring Ascent. And you're already out of Body Tempering Liquid provided energy : your body cultivation won't progress much from this session. You sit down, and starts the Meditation of the Spiritual Beast Whisperer
Already, you see yourself circled by the spiritual totems of your beasts. You have only one chance : only one thread of Qi and Blood is available for you to guide to your aperture. The Astral Hawk dives, clutches it gently, pulls it on the opening of your aperture.
The thread is already half as long as it was a couple seconds ago. You grit your teeth, and the physical feedback almost pulls you away from the spiritual world of the meditation. You brace yourself, and regain your focus just in time to regrasp the short thread that was slipping away.
guiding it, then dropping it in the Heart aperture.
You've done it. You open your eyes. The wolf master nods, and leave. You feel the weight of indebtedness on your shoulder.

The next day, while training with all the other novices, the Hawk Master lightly taps your shoulder.
"The other day, you said the Qi and Blood thread frayed before you could have put it in your Aperture? I think you managed it - and the thread reconstituted itself."

>Attempt to craft a friendship bond between Ai and Dhundan
The goal is simple : Turning you into the bind between Ai and Dhundan. Future chances, or opportunities, or missions you will need to team up? Piece of cake with those two monster-to-be.
As the saying goes, no battle plans survive engagement.
First, you realize no one really knows or spend time with Ai - she's always humming and skipping, not willing to discuss or play with the others.
When you approach her, and explicitly ask for her to join activities, she declines it finding rules exposition "boring chatter" and unable to stay down or keep focus for more than a few breath before getting up and humming-hopping away.
Then, there is the whole matter of incompatibility between the two of them.
Dhundan seems relatively lowly confident when you suggested to play with both of them in your free time. Despite engaging more with the others, he have more a recluse temperament and needs a couple hour of alone-brooding every day.
His mere presence seems to act as a repellent to Ai. After three weeks of a circular chase (involving strategical planning and baiting), you realize the inverse also holds true.
You confront both of them on the matter : Ai feels "he disturbs my music" while Dhundan think "it's exhausting just having her in sight".
This is a complete failure, and you're afraid there's nothing you can do to improve that fact. This took quite an amount of free time, and kept you a little bit awake at night.

>Cultivation : keeps progressing.
Meanwhile, you keep diligently cultivating. You are allocated once a week, with the other "talented kids", a spoonful of Body Tempering Liquid.
Your progress are good - holding up with the other normal kids and even the two gifted ones. Your supply of Body Tempering Liquid is no longer challenged.
Your Heart Acupoint is, week after week, filling up with threads of Qi and Blood. With your diligent work, you pull at least a couple of them each week, with last week turning into a record with generating (and catching) five of them.
Of course, you felt quite dizzy afterward - this prowess left few energy left for the body itself, and it took the rest of the day and a good night of sleep for you to recover feeling miserable, but you were praised for going all the way toward progress.
Your teacher instructed that you'll need around 300 strands to fill your acupoint, and be worthy of the "Cultivator" title. Of course, with your body and spirit strengthening, you will soon be able to take Body Tempering Liquid twice a week.
That is, until they start showing why they're different from the ordinary ones such as you : first, Ai's peculiar skipping movement changed somewhat, making her the fastest (by far) not only among the younger novices, but also other children still working on opening more advanced acupoints.
Second, Dhundan have also grasped something further. You only caught glimpses of it - from your closeness to Dhundan. You don't quite understand what it is, and Dhundan is secretive about it.

The genius are rewarded for their insight with Qi and Blood Pills. You've come to understand that your group's main strenght is your remaining amount of Inborn true Qi, allowing all of you to progress seemlesly.
However, all of you are limited by your children body, with low amount of Qi and Blood to turn into strands and shove into your acupoint. This is why the sect does not give the young disciples Body Tempering Liquid every day.
This is also why despite its name, the Hundred Days of Foundation Building will take likely more time for your group. Well, depending if you get allocated Qi and Blood Pills.

Four month have passed since you joined the Eastern Province branch of Tamers of Hundred Beasts.
You successfully pulled 18 threads of Qi and blood so far, with an increasing rate (1-2-2-3-2-3-5). Genius are tied at 23 threads - going further than you thanks to the extra session provided by the pills. Other kids in the "talented" group are at 17, 14 and 11.

Regarding Dhundan, you...

You choose to accept Dhundan silence, mainly because of the debacle of trying to turn Ai, him and you in a power trio.
Your relationship resumes normally - except the body cultivation is starting to bearing fruits and the amount of dung shoveled by both of you in your still-ongoing punishment is more even.

>Focus more on the Hawk
You allocate more time and effort in the aviary. After your daily duties, you take some time to increase the bond with the Hawk.
You start being able to have basic communication with it - sending him fly then come back, you taught him to differenciate Dhundan and Ai. Your hawk is able to cawk once for yes, twice for no, letting you improve its use as a scout.
However, you makes few progress with your cultivation technique by training this way. No more ideas? That's what Masters are for!
So, you simply asks the Hawk master where does the secret techniques lies in your technique.
"Nice try. I won't just tell you the secret, but here's an hint : focus on the third, sixth, ninth and seventeenth stances."
Those are Swooping Dive, Talon's Grip, Hovering Glide and Wind-Brushed Waltz.
You think and ponder for the rest of the day. You'll surely prioritize those move in your next sessions of training. Sadly, that doesn't pay up the next day, which happens to be when you get your next dose of Body Tempering Liquid.

Back at the aviary, you keep your thoughts going while sending your Hawk fetch. Maybe a hint lies in higher realm disciples way of training?
You gaze at them. A first realization dawns on you : you're pretty sure most of them does not practice the same technique as you. More advanced technique for higher tier disciple or your sect have a far more wide collection of art that you imagined?
Then, the hawks themselves. They move differently than your own and most of the one you're helping tending. Essentially differently.
Inspiration struck. You start circulating your Way of the Spiritual Beast Whisperer. You feel them faintly on the edge of your spiritual perception. Some colorful, other sharp. Your vision fade - this trick was only possible thank to the Body Tempering Liquid remaining in you since yesterday.

This is worthy to ask the Hawk Master.
He smiles cryptically.
"You'll know more with the Transplanhumance"
Then, he left you flabbergasted.
At least, your diligence coupled with your astute questions seems to score a few point with him, even though you didn't immediately grasped more about your cultivation.

The best way forward would be asking an grown-up disciple about that. You beeline toward Bathias, a 3rd realm -as known as "Battle King" realm - 14 year old boy.

"Big brother Bathias, "
- As a sect specializing in beast-taming, the novice practitioners deal with ordinary beasts that haven't even reached the first realm. These creatures serve merely as a means to teach you the fundamentals of care and handling.
This mundane beast parts are not worth much or difficult to procure for higher level cultivators. The sect's edge truly lies in nurturing and hunting Spiritual beasts
.
- Spiritual beasts?
- You'll see in less than two weeks if you're lucky."
Better not push it. other disciples seems to be delighted not telling you, as you provide them entertainment in your repeated requests.

Even by taking care to prioritize the hinted movements in your body-tempering routine, the only tangible result your got after this week of cultivation and two doses of body-tempering liquid are 8 more threads in your acupoint.

So,there's something coming up soon™

Spend two days each running with horse, wrestling with wolf, and, I don't know, slithering and biting shit with snake.

Maybe melding with your other animals will reveal a secret in the Transplanhumance, spirit animal, and Way of the Spiritual Beast Whisperer as well as Hawk's Wide Ballet.
>>
>>5892391
>Focus on hidden techniques.
>Take a minute to tell Dhundam about the incoming event. He might have not heard yet, though thats unlikely.

See, the three things described appear to me, to be how a hawk hunts. Dive in, grab and float away. Use gravity to smash hard defences against the ground or carry it away.

So extending off of that, and this being a mobility one, it could drag a target or it could be some sort of escape from melee technique?

We dont know what the Transplanhumance is, so how can we prepare? Sounds like when we get spiritual beasts or they test our bloodlines. Either way, Nothing I can figure.

Been trying to post for a fucking hour. WORK DAMNIT

>Maybe the hint is in the style that which we used in combat, and trying so that the lines which separates Beast from Men are blurried, and that could explain the name of: Transplanhumance": Focus on the martial arts, and try to translate those movements into a fighting style of elegant but quick and lethal movement
>>
>>5892391
Transplan- obviously close to transplant. And humance, could be something like transferring a conciousness, or the lifeforce of a human or energy- our ki.

If I had to guess the hint of the disciple gave us of specifically stating SPIRITUAL beasts, is that transplanhumance is transferring our Ki with a bonded animal into them and making them spiritual beasts.

Another hint was that our hawk was acting notably different from the other hawks, maybe our training is having an effect to get it ready for transference, and we're moving onto the final stage of making the hawk a spirit beast.

>Do you focus the incoming week on preparations for the Transplanhumance? [Practice moving our Ki in and out of our body smoothly, maybe try pouring KI into things like plants that won't be missed if they die. Also keep bonding with Hawk.]

>Take a minute to tell Dhundam about the incoming event. He might have not heard yet, though thats unlikely.
"Dhundan, something's incoming. An event next week. Something called Transplanhumance. Did you heard anything about it?
- Nothing. I'll avoid overextending myself then. Thanks, my friend."

You decide to also focus on the incoming unknown event. But how?
Maybe the truth lies in your Way of the Spiritual Beast Whisperer Meditation? A good way forward would be strengthening the bond with your animals. You try to split your time fairly among them this week, and carefully watch what differentiate the beasts and the cultivator.
Maybe suppressing those differences will lead to insight? At least, there are several move variation you want to try in your next cultivation : You've got an hunch about the secret being related to how the eagles hunt : dive, grab, float away. Something you'll have to try.
Before falling asleep at night, you also try to guess what the Transplanhumance is about :
>Transplan- obviously close to transplant. And humance, could be something like transferring a conciousness, or the lifeforce of a human or energy- your Qi.
Maybe you can send a thread of Qi and Blood directly in a spiritual beast? Crafting a rope-like bond between your souls? You decide to ask Bathias the next day - better safe than sorry.
"That doesn't work. Not like that. Not with Qi and Blood. You'll need to reach the second realm - True Master rank. Your Qi and Blood will then turn into True Qi - pure, shapeless. Then, and only then, you can shape it into elements or pour it out of you."

In the end, this week's cultivation does not yield great results - a miserable lone thread of Qi and Blood on each occurrence. You're not happy with the way you worked. Moreover, you're not sure either your cultivation-technique-related hunches are somewhat right or completely wrong.
>>
In the end, it turns you guessed wrong about the Transplanhumance.
Ryota, the strong man you haven't seen much since the day you've joined the sect (not that you explicitly tried to get his advice or anything), comes to talk to all novices at the Hundred Days of Foundation Building stage during the mandatory calisthenics session.
Said novices include your group, but most of the pupils are kids which are six month to one year older than you, with some really close to break through.

"Hello novices. The incoming days will be marked by a great opportunity for the sect - and one of the reason the branch have been built here : Transplanhumance.
This is a rare event where a whole ost of spiritual beasts migrates among planes. Those beasts' might scale from the first to the third realm.
We have a pretty good estimation of where and when the even will start, thus strongest disciples will be located to the metaphorical eye of the storm. You are already strong enough to be of some use to the sect : in the outskirts of the phenomenon, your role will be to capture weaker spiritual beasts that might flee away.
Some stronger beasts might try to force through your position. In that case, you'll need to notify more advanced disciples.
The perturbation will be moving - you'll have to be careful and move along. We'll deploy today. The sect is counting on you today, novices.
"

You're quite happy you didn't babbled much at everybody about how to prepare for transplanting something in your humanity.
>>
Carts are prepared, novices are transported in the countryside. You insist to not watch the coastline or inside the sea itself, and you're instead positioned in the woods. Without any of the beasts - too dangerous for them, or so you've been told.
You've also been told of the meaning of Transplanhumance : it's simply a Transplanar Transhumance.
You've been issued one spiritual bead - a pearl-like treasure that can capture a weakened spiritual beast, as well as a Spiritual Flare - another glass sphere, filled with spiritual energy, that can notify cultivators able to sense Qi; this can be used as an emergency request for help simply by smashing it on the ground (or just to know where to pick you up at the end of the day).
Last, a clay tablet with five vertical marks. Those marks will lit up when closer to the eye of the storm - five marks meaning on spot where reality blend together.
You are on your own, with no one in sight. Time to make a decision.
On one hand, the danger is real. On the other hand, you feel like you're slipping more and more behind the geniuses in your progress : you've been surpassed by Yi Norm this week, with Sin Din on your heels.
>Stay away from all sort of danger [almost riskless, very low chance of meeting a spiritual beast]

The only choice you have is to push forward. Disregarding danger, you use the clay tablet as a detector toward the epicenter of the phenomenon.
Signal flickers down while you try several directions, then rises when you walk towards the nearby woods.

>99 + extremely lucky roll on the loot table
Before half an hour passed, you see your first spiritual spirit : a radiant bird, nimbled in flame. It is wounded, and flying fast toward you - fleeing something?
You've heard of such a magnificient being : it's clearly a Phoenix! You'll catch that opportunity!
It have seen you. A couple wingbeats raises its altitude to avoid you...
Not on your watch. You throw the sphere, which catch it in the middle of its flight before coming crashing down. With all your energy, you run and dive before the bead breaks on the ground - and catch it.
You're extremely proud of yourself and your decision making. That is, until you realize you're alone in a forest without any way to deal with the dangerous spirits inside.

>Your 3-roll result is in the best 0.1% possible outcome
An eye at your clay tablet shows the danger is rising as a third mark begin to lit. You quickly rotate your meditation technique and the drop of remaining Body Tempering Liquid instantly consumes as several more beasts flare on your mind's sight.
You realize that you made a strategical mistake : stockpiling this week's Body Tempering Liquid would had been a better call to use it as detection fuel instead of using it for its main purpose; a cultivation resource (especially given on how slow your progress were).
You quickly turn on your heels and begin to run while clenching your fist, cracking the Spiritual Flare. Instead of a burst of spiritual energy, a trickle leaks out, living an easy-to-follow trail.
Luckily, one of the sect members finds you before you meet another beast - although her sudden appearance as if she was already waiting in front of you startles you.
You know the 10 year old girl - Kyo Ko, which broke through the Second Realm two or three weeks ago. You know she has a Snake affinity, as she also follows tutelage of the Snake Mistress.
"What's the matter?
- I don't have any more spiritual bead and the storm is closing in!
- I can bring you back to the cart... But I'll lose the opportunity for captures. So what's in for me? "
You didn't expected that. And you don't want to just hand away the Phoenix. Think quick!
"There are other spiritual beasts close! I can help you catch them in exchange?
- That can work for me. Do you have martial techniques? Movement techniques?"
Your silence is eloquent.
"So your only worth to me is that of a bait."
>>
Wait, where is she? The forrest around you warps. A long-tailed mouse (a dormouse?) stands in front of you. The big-eye rodent is the fluffiest, most pettable animal you've ever seen.
You advance toward it, extending your hand, when its eyes glister.
>76
Kyo Ko suddenly appears behind it, and strike with a piercing punch, before slamming a spiritual bead on it, catching it in the marble.
"Careful there. You fell for its charming technique. Here's another flare : can you do again what you did to attract me?"
And just like that, she's gone again. You clench your fist, letting the spiritual energy leaks again.
You move again to try leaving the woods. Without any way to perceive spiritual beasts around you, you can only trust the older disciple for your safety.
Distant noises. Something scratching at the limit of your perception, that you might feel when more apertures will be open but are just distant echoes for now.
Your unrest grows. Until something jumps at you from the trees.
Fear submerges you, and you can already feel the nimble claws tearing at your muscles, the fangs burying in the soft flesh of your neck.
>75
Kyo Ko suddenly appears on your right side, punching the Spiritual Panther in the face, before slamming a spiritual bead on it, catching it in the marble.
"Alright, it was my last bead. We'll head back to the carts now.
- We... weren't ?
- No, you were walking along the Transplanhumance direction all along. This way.
- Is my debt paid?
- Well, I had almost no luck on my side before following your flare. There's no way to say how it would had gone... But thanks to you I made four captures. So It is I who owe you : take this as your part of the spoils".
She flicks a marble at you - hey it's the Dormouse one!
"Thanks! ... What should I do with it?
- Either keep it or give it to the sect. Keep it if it's compatible with one of your animals or to trade directly with someone. Give it against pills, or techniques, or maybe another one more compatible with you and your beasts.
By the way, what did you caught before calling me?

- A Phoenix!
- I don't believe you. Let me see? Come on, I won't steal it from you!"
Well, she saved your life at least twice today and seems to like you a lot thanks to the bountiful harvest. It won't hurt, right? You give her the marble.
"Haha, it's not a Phoenix! But I see why you thought that. What you have there is most likely the spirit of a Hawk with attunement to fire and maybe gold? What, don't make this face; it's still really good!"

So, at the end of the day, you acquired a Golden Flame Hawk spirit, a Dazzling Dream Dormouse spirit and made an extremely favorable first impression to a senior.

Being that we are just beginning our cultivation this sect aint gonna have any profound talent enhancing techniques.

So its down to what is suitable. Hawk spirit? Quite suitable. More techniques to spread us thin? Nah.
Then again, having a master to advise us would be nice, but you gotta earn that.
>>
The Horse Master is waiting at the carts. You are among the first to come back.
Part of you want to keep both of the spirits. But you let reason get the upper hand over heart.
"Young true master. Novice.
- Horse master. I'll keep this two for myself. And give this one to the sect.
- A Panther spirit? Third stage... Attuned to agility and suffering... Great catch. This was quite the harvest. Did the boy helped?
- More than that. Come on, present your spoils!
- Here, master. a Dazzling Dream Dormouse
- Second stage? Impressive catch for a novice. You're practicing an Hawk Technique, so you will most likely wants the sect to give you such a spirit?
- Actually, I got one... I'll keep this one myself". The Horse Master smiles; seemingly pleased by your results exceeding wildly all expectations.
"Mmmh... That Hawk is obviously attuned to Gold and Fire... But there's something more... This is a great catch. Alright, so you want an Horse spirit? Or a Technique maybe?
- No, no. Qi and Blood Pills will do. Thanks, Master."

>Obtained 20 Qi and Blood pills

Slowly, higher level disciples comes back, some with a novice. Some of them present wounds - including your friend Man-Din, clenching her arm with eyes filled with tears.
Most are empty handed.
Dhundan used your warning well. He set aside Body Tempering Liquid, and made a great catch himself. For now, he keeps it to himself, only flashing it briefly to the Horse Master.
Three older novices were luckier - you're expecting them to open their heart aperture soon instead of soon-ish.

The novices that obtained a spiritual beast are taken in secrecy in the main compound of the sect.
There, circles are drawn with thunder-struck-willow charcoal. You are told to step inside, and to circulate your Way of the Spiritual Beast Whisperer meditation.
Soon, you feel things are disposed around you - but once again, you lack the Spiritual Awareness to identify what's happening.
However, you're easily aware of something : the Hawk have been brought to you. He chirps, roost on the hand you extend to him in the physical world, and his Astral self joins you in the spiritual one.
Soon, the Golden Flame Hawk, still trapped, appears in the spiritual world. Your hawk set in motion, and you recognize its moves as the one you've practiced numerous time : Wings Unfurling, Skyward Spiral, Swooping Dive, Aerial Hunt.
While your hawk is bathed in energy, the spiritual one, diminished and trapped, does not stand a chance. It attempts to resist but the fight is an alredy-lost one. Soon, the Spirit is absorbed by the Astral, completing their merge.

>Obtained a Bonded Golden Flame Hawk

You open your eyes, and get a glance at Dhundan's catch : a Mighty Black Pangolin Spirit.
Wait, the empty Spiritual Bead still look in good condition. You pocket it.
>Obtained 1 Spiritual Bead

"Congratulation, all of you. Bonded beasts are the heart of our sect and techniques. You will find soon your practice will yield twice the results for half the effort"
With those words from Ryota, the five of you go to sleep, spiritually exhausted.
>>
Your schedule resumes as normal, when you're given Body Tempering Liquid two times a week. The main difference, of course, is that the Golden Flame Hawk became a part of you.
Quite literally, as it can, wherever it is in the physical world, get back to your spiritual self and re-emerge from your position.

In your first cultivation, most of your effort is getting used to the bonded beast. It yields 4 threads of Qi and Blood despite an average session - without even a light fatigue following.

Second attempt is better : You understand the body technique better since merging, and the Golden Flame Hawk is faster, more tuned to you than the Astral one. You smash through your past record, pulling 10 threads.
What would have been dangerous and pushing yourself way too much in normal conditions becomes the right way to practice thanks to the pills restoring your inner energy.
The best part : those pills are so potent that you only licked a bit of one to feel your energy fully coming back. You spit it and put it aside - you'll consume this one in priority, but you will be able to draw energy from it again.
As Ai surprisingly collected nothing at all, you're slowly catching up with her cultivation level despite her natural gifts - thanks to the conjunction of the pills and the spirit.

Indeed, your bonded Golden Flame Hawk makes cultivating far easier.
It's been five month since you joined the Eastern Province branch of Tamers of Hundred Beasts, and your last attempt leads to 8 threads pulled, but more importantly you breakthrough in your Hawk's Wide Ballet technique comprehension.

Choose one Hawk's Wide Ballet technique advancement among :
>Gliding Waltz - Movement Technique. crossed terrain on an apparently slow normal movement
>Hawk's alacrity - a partner beast technique. You can now provide spiritual energy to a partner beast to fasten it.

Adding the word "Spear" to your technique (that I will probably rename something like "Hawk Lancer Wide Ballet" will make cultivation a bit harder (number of word impact your chances of result behind the QM's screen) but will train you in the art of the Spear, improving your raw fighting ability while you work on your body tempering.

I'm surely going to vote for the Lancer Hawk vote, or if there's others willing to vote for the technique that let's you have a bonus overall in battle then I'm more inclined to vote for it. But still I had an idea and I wanna see what other anons thing about it

>Hawk's Sharp Eye: In general the MC sights improve even slightly, but the active ability let's him analyze his rival and determine the most accesible weak spot that he can strike
>Decesive Descent: While airborne or falling, the daoist dives to the sky in a daring technique and before touching the grounds, liberates Qi to stop the movement and "flap his wings" for his well being, while also granting advantage when attacking from an elevation higher than the enemy and on ambushing from above

I feel that the second might just be an overpowered version of Gliding Waltz, so maybe discard that one.

But the first one I fell that it could be a "final attack" sort of. We can just fall at high velocity and if our attack could be dodged or blocked, we get to safety, or at least prevent that we split our skull against the ground
>>
>>5895141
Thank you for your input, but for lore reason, I have to veto the first (it would more be an Innate Skill than a technique). The feather-fall-AOE-burst technique is a nice idea; however this is not feasible before second stage as a Technique based on creating a material effect outside your body with your Qi

There it is. Hiding in the 6th Figure of the Hawk's Wide Ballet, Talon's Grip
The move is strange : it is made of multiple claw motions of the right arm, while the left one is folded in your back.
The Golden Flame Hawk circles around you; positioning itself as a sparing target. Of course, you broadly miss it the first time. Piqued in your pride, you attempt again.
This time, it's closer. Still not enough. Again! Forward Talon; Sideways Talon; Downward Talon; Upward Talon! Each strike miss, but the Hawk's dodge are narrower and narrower.
One more time ! Forward Talon; Sideways Talon; Downward Tal-the hit connects. Your body brimming with Qi and Blood, you feel one strand absorbed by your left arm.
It moves fast - unbelievably fast. The hit was already sending the Hawk flying away, it still reached your bonded beast
>Discovered hidden technique Fighting technique : Hawks double talon
With your body brimming with energy, you circulate your meditation technique.
Focusing your perception on your Astral self, something strikes you : one of the Qi and Blood thread generated thanks to the union of Body Tempering Liquid and your body cultivation technique is missing : this was the price to activate your technique
>You don't have met <Condition> to generate Qi and Blood threads without Body Tempering Liquid for now.
>That mean if you want to use your technique, you need to have taken said liquid without pulling the Qi and Blood threads in your Heart Aperture
Threads located in Aperture are not an usable resource

This is a great win for you. In the coming days, you feel that your standing in the sect improved a bit, cementing your position as less gifted than the two genius, but a step ahead the other skilled novices.
You still have to shovel crap with Dhundan though.

The weeks following the Transplanhumance have become paradoxically calmer and calmer : the Master are allocating most of their time with more advanced disciple nurturing the caught spiritual beasts.
That gives you a quite ample amount of time.

You spend the next two weeks cultivating diligently every day, using your Qi and Blood pills to boost your energy recoveration.
Thanks to your good standing with the sect, they have no problem letting you consume Body Tempering Liquid, the necessary component to spin your energy in Qi and Blood threads.
In the end, each of your training yields less thread than the previous ones, but quantity have a quality of its own : with your daily cultivation, you end up more than doubling your pulled Qi and Blood Threads.
Your heart Aperture is now filled just over one-third, at the low-cost of five of your Qi and Blood pills.
This might have been the best use of your time : your extremely focused training reached the level of Dhundan - and overtook him by 2 threads on the last day.

Ryota, the strong man that selected you, guided you to your four beasts, and announced Transplanhumance, comes to talk to all novices at the Hundred Days of Foundation Building stage during the mandatory calisthenics session.
Said novices include your group, minus the ones that recently break through - you've caught up to the slowest of the kids that were here before you.

>Martial art training
The choice is a no-brainer - you have been dubbed proficient with spears, so the Halberd is the obvious choice, right?
Turns out it's a completely different weapon. Spears are metal points mounted on long, thin, supple stick allowing surprising motion thanks to the haft's flexibility.
The Halberd is more like a Saber mounted on a wider, more rigid shaft. While the spear is a thrusting weapon, halberds are slashing ones.
What could have been a mistake because of poor hindsight turns into a boon, as you find out you're as gifted with the halberd than you're with the spear.

The technique itself consist in a collection of moves and techniques for mounted fighting - against mounted or unmounted opponents.
The Horse Master, instructing you in the style, share his wisdom and hindsight regarding mounted fighting.
Mounted fighting is an oddity in the cultivation world, and quite marginal. Granted, mounted fighters are expected to be more mobile, with a stronger armor and an advantageous higher position - not even factoring the need to adapt techniques to a mounted opponent.
Most mounted fighters have tamed a Spiritual Horse, which is the easiest and most accessible way to bring into a fight a mount that won't instantly get killed by an adversary which level surpass the second realm.
However, the downside is obvious : the spiritual horse can still be wounded or slain, making the mounted fighting an option requiring deep pockets to be sustainable on the long term.
That's when your sect unique Meditation technique comes into play : As you can bond with Spiritual beast, making them part of your Astral Self, hits and wound to them will instead affect your pool of energy - making them dissipate on what would be lethal hit and allowing you to materialize them again if you have enough Qi.

>Cultivation :
Of course, your cultivation suffers from your diverted attention. Qi and blood thread kept for training the fighting style instead of filling the Heart Aperture turns your dashing progress speed into a crawl.
Obviously, Dhundan Kepa overtakes you in raw cultivation progress. At least, you didn't used your precious pills this two weeks.
>>
>Tournament proceeding :
Of course, you ask Bathias and Kyo Ko as much questions as possible about the tournament :
The tournament is organized in age-based fighting categories. You can enter with equipment, however external help such as a non-bonded normal or spiritual beast is not permitted.
That will put you at an immediate disadvantage : your meager martial technique is mounted fighting, after all.
In your age category, the most menacing foes will probably be the Stable Lotus harbor military youth recruits - the only opponents fitted with armor in that age bracket, a waste for most sects but a necessity for training strong and efficient frontliners once they reach 16.
Participant less than ten year old have a special spiritual formation applied to them. To avoid wounds, hits will turn into ghostly attacks, leaving colored marks letting know without risks of injury the winner of a bout.

Six month have passed since you joined the Eastern Province branch of Tamers of Hundred Beasts. The tournament will happen in two days.
In the end, you...
>Ask the sect for a Horse Spirit to merge with [Basically gamble your favor for the incoming tournament. Doing well will grant back favor, doing sub-par won't]
>Don't ask for a Horse Spirit [WILL put you at a disadvantage in fights]
AND
>Safekeep Body Tempering Liquid for powering your Hawk's Double Talon
>Consume allocated Body Tempering Liquid for cultivating
>>
>>5898629
>Gamble the favour for a horse spirit.
>Stockpile some tempering Liquids.

We are still getting a horse spirit out of this.
>>
>>5898629
I'll stop lurking for this one.
I'm not sure anons want the horse. It's been rejected once. It also looks like most anons thought we'd get a spear technique, but the halberd one doesn't help, and railroads us into mounted fighting, which I haven't seen brought up. And even then, there has been a focus on the Hawk. So for combat growth, I see our main options as:

>Mounted fighting using some random Horse: split focus, not a starting animal, could be wasted effort

>Mounted fighting using the Hawk (making it bigger somehow?) long-term effort for getting a mount and applying the halberd technique?

>On-foot fighting using the Hawk: what we're going for, just tag-team the opposition. Ditch the technique, keep the favor, and either eke out a win or get honorably beaten by some random genius kid.

I say we
>Don't ask for a Horse Spirit [WILL put you at a disadvantage in fights]
>Consume allocated Body Tempering Liquid for cultivating

If I'd caught up sooner I'd have voted to sit out the tournament altogether. We are not some favored under the heavens combat genius. We aren't winning the prize, or stumbling into a forgotten treasure form a mysterious merchant, or being handed an instant-win card by helping an old cultivator granny cross the street. I say we hope to win one fight, but focus on our growth. We aren't going to pull a win out of our ass, this place will be brimming with geniuses. We're a sideshow, but we have proven dedication can at least help us keep up. Cultivation for non-protagonists is a long and arduous path that requires dedication, not fooling around.

I'm guessing we can't back out now? In case some anons were doing this for pointers for a spear technique we very much aren't getting? Or could we have asked for a spear technique on the last choice?

Focus on our strength.
Swapping >>5898731 for "DONT ask for a horse spirit."

A horse spirut still helps, for transport and cultivation but the halberd can still be used on the ground. We just need space.

Still, I value the favour more. Because we have put our name forwards we have to win if we want to keep our favorable position. So lets keep some fuel in the tank.
The tournement isnt fooling around, its combat practice.

>Regarding spear-techniques and animals
This comes back to you chosing to go to an animal-focus Sect. The sect detected you were proficient with 4 animals that you've been handling daily (hawk, wolf, horse and hawk). So while you're at this sect, the option you'll be offered will revolve around those animals.
The sect techniques actually favor having several bonded animals, opening specific synergies. Let's say you somehow end up with a Golden Snake Arrow technique - your Hawk spirit will empower it thanks to its Golden attribute.

Joining the military youth would have granted choice based on weapons of predilection with elements, material or animals secondary options.

>Can we back out now?
Not really, unless there's a landslide support for that write-in.

>Regarding main options
You lack one : sooner or later acquire a Horse spirit to fuse with the young horse you have been spending time with lots of time with.
Confusion might come from ESL from me: one of your "starting animals" is picrel

>Regarding spear and Halberd
In the crunch behind the scene, the confusion between spear and Halberd could have costed much. In the end, you were quite lucky on that aspect.
>>
>>5898815

>>
>>5898815
My bad also, we've been spending so much time wih the Hawk that I only remembered it, along with the more memorable wolf pup and viper. Poor foal, being so overshadowed.
I guess it's worth trading a favor, especially if we don't get it back, to get another spirit animal. Also, it means we can't lose said foal. We don't need the grief from losing a bonded animal, and the sect does have a method to avoid that.
Flipping completely, then.
>>5898795
Since we're committed
>Ask the sect for a Horse Spirit to merge with [Basically gamble your favor for the incoming tournament. Doing well will grant back favor, doing sub-par won't]
>Safekeep Body Tempering Liquid for powering your Hawk's Double Talon

The Halberd is heavier than the spear, so being able to flow into a second strike can prove a very surpising ace. Also we can make it a 3-on-1 by still using the Hawk as a flanking or overhead threat. Okay, I can see this coming together.

Though I have to admit that pic here >>5898628 isn't helping. It does look like a thicker spear, and while halberds do have a pointed end, and make good use of it almost like a lance, they do have a large axe-like head as well. It really is the bastard baroque lovechile of a spear and an axe. Best clarify what it is we'll be using, especially with double-attacks coming into play. Can we launch a first attack with the axe, the use our ability for a thrust immediately after, or reverse the axe blade's momentum for a follow-up strike for the opposite direction?
>>
>>5898883
>Halberd talk
Couldn't get satisfying result using stable diffusion and no time to draw.

We are talking vietname Dai Dao/Chinese guan Dao.
Typically, a broad saber mounted on a stick; usually Rotin. The weapon is mostly use to slash, but you can also thrust. Its historical strength lies in its reach and momentum - good luck blocking that with a sword, and martial art tell tales on how halberdier could decapitate a charging horse.
If you get engaged on close quarter (sword reach), you're not completely fucked up as you can switch your grip close to the blade to use both ends of your weapon. Moving hands around the shaft are fundamental for accelerating your strike and cleave, as well as being overall mobile.
The main weakness of the weapon, as you can guess, is its slowness, its weight and its heft.

With Hawk's double talon, you can send a mighty cleave and unnaturally cleave again if it connects. This is a quite surprising move, so someone not aware of it will be most likely hit twice.
>>
>>5898895
>With Hawk's double talon, you can send a mighty cleave and unnaturally cleave again if it connects. This is a quite surprising move, so someone not aware of it will be most likely hit twice.
Good to know the lack of weapon limitation on the double talon was no accident. This will certainly be useful, mounted or not.

>>5898895
QM, is it possible to make a mix between one of those three section staff and the Guan Dao? Or make them so they can be separated in the half? My idea is that we can use the Guan Dao as a large sword once we're in close combat, or if we have enough strength then we might use it as two weapons, the staff and the blade on each hand

I'm not asking for doing this NOW for the tournament, just an idea that I had
>>
>Ask the sect for a Horse Spirit to merge with
>Safekeep Body Tempering Liquid for powering your Hawk's Double Talon

We gotta dominate here or we'll lose big.
>>
>>5898917

Possible.
To do so, you'll need to
>Create a technique mixing Triple-Staff and Guan Dao
This can be done with lucky encounter /breakthrough in a Triple Staff or Guan Dao Technique (like the breakthrough in >>5894997) by, for example, adding the "Triple Staff" keyword to a Halberd technique
>Get a custom-made weapon fitting your technique

Letting you edit your technique on Breakthrough is a way for you to deeply customise your character to the playstyle that interest you, among other stuff.
>>
>>5898933
Do we know what doing well in the tournament translates as, for gaining back favor? Do we at least know how many matches there will be? I'm guessing an elimination phase where you need to win as many matches as possible, then classic 1v1 tournament ladder matches? Or a free-for-all for starters?

Can we more than one spirit animal of the same species, like say multiple hawks?
>>
>>5899594
Not really.

Spirits have "tier" (meaning they won't bring benefits after certain level). You can update them to an higher tier by finding a higher-level spiritual beast, creating a formation, and burn ressources to let the lower tier spirit beat up (and consume) the higher tier one. Keywords can change at that opportunity. It's easier for the spirit to consume something with related keywords.

Going to a fight with a specialization as a Mounted fighter and without said Mount is an epitome of stupidity.
You simply can't represent the sect in those conditions. Thus, you approach the Horse Master.

"Horse Master; this Disciple have a request.
- You want a Horse Spirit? I told you about taking one after the Transplanhumance. Now, the choice will be reduced."
Your moral plummet. The Master notice.
"Hey, hey, kid! I am not denying your request! Comes in the main building tonight, after the meal."
Thus, after the meal, you leave your dormitory. Nobody bats an eye : Dhundan, secretive as always spend much time training out of sight, Ai is humming softly in a corner.
Yi Norm, Sin Din, Man Din and a few other kids (mostly ungifted and irrelevant, you didn't even bothered learning their name) are playing a card game based on the 33 animals.

You cross the field separating the various dormitories to the main compound, where Novices do calisthenics on the morning. Said main compound is an immensely huge building collection : despite not holding any beast, Spiritual or Normal, a Sect needs separate locations for pill refining and storing, a Library to protect the written form of technics, the Forge, the Treasury, as well as chambers for the various Masters or advanced Disciple.
There you are, waiting in front of the building in which the Spirit Bonding formation was drawn, in the company of your rapidly growing Foal. The Horse master gets out of a building restricted to Disciples (you already feel way out of your place as a lone Novice on this courtyard), and slowly walks to you.
Your apprehension is growing, while you awkwardly notice he noticed you, and you don't know when exactly you should engage the conversation - if you should engage the conversation.
Looks like the master is testing you : he's slowing in advance, surely to increase the pressure of the trial? You keep standing perfectly still. He's reaching you, as tension rise to its climax.
Still, not a word is uttered. Both of you are standing, locking your gaze. A long, long, minute pass.
"So. Regarding our earlier discussion... I asked the Sect Master. I was wrong - we stockpiled something especially for a gifted pupil with an interest for the Martial thing. Turns out you're a highly suitable plot for cultivating this precious seed."

Due to undisclosed variable, I rolled with advantage the quality of the Horse spirit; you got a 74 over 100.
Complete victory. You somehow asserted subtle social dominance. You execute a kneeling bow - the highest form of respect
"This Novice heartfully thanks the Master, and through him the sect, for the precious gift bested upon me.
- Thanks? Nice respect, but words are cheap. We are trusting you with precious resources. Now, you'll have to be worthy of them. Every day. This is the hard part - not qualifying for the investment in the first place."
You feel the weight of the words upon you in this quite solemn moment.

You're subsequently taken once again, foal in tow, in the Formation room, where thunder-struck-willow charcoal circles are already drawn.
A spiritual bead is placed in front of you while you circulate your Meditation technique, and some elements are placed around you : Silver, a tuft of fur coming probably from an Horse Mane, and a mysterious third component.
You open your eyes one instant. It looks like lotus seed?
You close your eyes again, and pull the Spiritual Horse forward - he neigh, and soon, the metallic-looking horse trapped in the spiritual beads comes forward.
Once again, the spiritual projection of your horse overcome the trapped spirit, merging effortlessly.

>Obtained an Horse Spirit

Next day is a slow day : you stockpiled your allowance of Body Tempering Liquid, and try not to let stress pile up.
Carts are readied and loaded up - the event is a rare gathering of all cultivators in the vicinity, so you expect quite a good amount of trade behind the coliseum's walls.
Of course, there is a coliseum : what city doesn't have the basic facility to house the people's favorite amusement?
The place is crowded : easily over a thousand participants, with one hundred in your particular category.
You glance at the Bracket.
You can't read. So you ask Kyo Ko for help - she finger-point your position.
"You're here. First opponent is a Military Youth named Xiao Niar."
You still understand one thing : by luck, you're drawn in a bracket avoiding one round of fight. Nice.

Of course, you're not the opening act. That honor is granted to a kid you recognize - the one gifted using a bow, facing a nameless face in a dark hood... And the fight's already over, the other kid covered in teal paint.
Is the bow a cheat pick? In any case, the formation set up by the referees seems to be effective.
And the realization dawns you : your Fighting technique, the Hawk's double talon is useless in that kind of fight. After all, if the fight is concluded after one hit succesful hit, a second one won't make a difference.
Stockpiling the Body Tempering Liquid was a bad choice - not that a single extra session would have made such a difference, you cope.

Soon enough, it's your turn. You step on the ring, halberd in hand. You focus on the main advice given to you - hide your techniques as long as possible.
"Disgusting nasty Shrimp man! This Xiao Niar will get its revenge!"
Oh, right, this retard. Flailing his sword like he's scared of it.

>Introducing the fighting system in that quest!
Fights are perilous event for cultivators. In particular, engaging in a fair fight to death with a cultivator a couple realms over your one will grant you an immediate date with lady death.
You're not a officially a cultivator yet - not with your Heart Aperture still closed. However, you've been diligently training, already seized a fortuitous opportunity, and have been rewarded with unlimited Body Tempering Liquid as well as pills by the Sect.
Last week, one of the smaller disciple could indulge for the first time in Body Tempering Liquid. You're certain Xiao Niar didn't had any, most likely because of his completely unlikeable attitude.
>This fight will be a landslide win. No roll require.
Now, how will you end this?
>A single Halberd thrust. End his misery while sparing his pride as much as possible.
>Ask the judge to coat your hand instead. Punch him in the shit-spitter thing which acts as his mouth
>Just wait for him to maim himself.

I wouldn't be so sure. It's useless if the first strike connects, but that's rarely the point. The point is to use the weapon's weight to get the opponent's weapon out of the way, then use our skill to double back and hit them while they're out of position. Or just use either strike as a feint. Or use the second strike to recover from having our own weapon parried or dragged down.
With enough technique, we could even make use of the intertia we're so brazenly ignoring, giving the halberd a burst of speed and letting its weight carry us to aid a dodge, though that only works on the ground. Still a useful trick to look into, since if we're ever dismounted and stuck with a halberd, dodging and repositioning could be a good idea.

No need to be cruel. You step forward, thrust.
"Touch! Win for the Eastern Province branch of Tamers of Hundred Beasts disciple!"
Xiao Niar, eyes wide open, drop his sword, focusing on the blade that turned liquid and completely smeared his shirt in purple.
>Over 100 Disciples, you're without a doubt in the best of 32.

Most matches are brutally one-sided. As Kyo Ko said, it seems like the Military Youth recruits have a strong advantage at this low level thanks to their training focus on the martial thing.
Regarding your friends, Ai didn't registered for the tournament. Yi Norm lost his first match in the unlucky bracket - tried to brawl against a knife, Sin Din won the unlucky bracket first turn and was beaten on the second one with her sword, while her twin Man Din beat her first opponent in the lucky bracket with her staff.
Of course Dhundan won. He glared menacingly, Saber in hand, and his opponent simply stepped down.

It's time for your second fight : you're facing a kid with a blue and black tunic, spear in hand.

>This opponent will be tougher. Still, with your favorable encounter and level you should come ahead easily.
>DC should be 25 (1d100, roll-over). However, you're currently unmounted, giving a +5 malus (DC : 30)
Introducing the fighting mechanic : trump card!
You currently have 2 Trump Cards : the horse and the hawk spirits.
If you fail the test against an opponent unaware of one of your Trump Card, a Trump Card will be revealed if you chose so.
This means the DC against this opponent will decrease of a dice roll (dice size depends on several factors behind the screen), and you get to roll a new d100.
Future opponent will be aware of your Trump card, so no extra d100 roll against them. However, the DC-decreasing dice will be rerolled.

Now, let's begin.

56 for DC 30 : Success! (without revealing any Trump Card)

The boy spin his weapon twice and set in his favored stance : a forward lunge, pointing the spear toward your head. You keep the Halberd on your right hand, staff vertical.
You've seen the boy previous fight. He's fast. But you can take him.
"Tidal Spear : current thrust!"
Who yells their technique name, seriously? However, this is a fancy name for a forward stabbing motion. On horseback, you'll use the shaft downward to deviate it, and keep the momentum for a slice.
You're not on horseback. Thinking quickly with reflexes only allowed to your superior cultivation, you reverse the movement and reel upward, changing the spear course away from your body and following with a thigh slice.
"Touch! Win for the Eastern Province branch of Tamers of Hundred Beasts disciple!"
That was an easy fight : your opponent only had for himself

>Over 100 Disciples, you're probably in the best of 16.

Of course, you take some time to observe other matches.
Dhundan effortlessly qualifies. He looks like one of the most fearsome competitor, alongside the bow-kid. Due to the Bracket construction, if you win all matches, you'll face Dhundan in half-finale and the other one in finale.

Your next opponent, a Stable Lotus Aspirant, won its fight by sheer cultivation difference : almost untrained in the martial thing, fighting bare hand, she have overcame her previous opponent by sheer force and speed - Bathias pointed out she've already opened the heart aperture, an impressive feat.

"This Young Mistress LienWen YanEr will show you the strength of an heir of the Stable Lotus!"

However, that's not all there is to it. Once you revealed your second trump, something happened.

Immediately, Dhundan starts exhuding his terrifying pressure. From the other side, Ster Ling shoot an arrow anyway.
"Oh, you're not shivering? This will be interesting., Dhundan taunts while dodging.
-Alright, dodge this! Technique of the Four Arrows!"
A technique were the opponent grabs 4 arrows in the quiver, and with a speed enabled by his Qi and Blood, fire them in a quick succession.
You feel it's way stronger than your Hawk's Double Talon, which is frankly unfair.
"That won't work! Pangolin's Dark Shield!"
A black leaf-shape form materialize in front of Dhundan. Wait, he can shape his Qi while still at the first realm? Unfair too, so unfair!
The four arrows collide on the dark form.
"Think that will stop me?"
Another arrow notched. Dhundan keep his shield up.
"Come forth, my bonded spirit!"
A bulky, black pangolin materialize, and rushes forward. The arrow is released, seemingly out of mark. Before drifting back toward Dhundan, unbeknownst to him, circling around the Shield Technique.
Another arrow is notched, but the Pangolin reaches and strike before the bow is drawn.
Dhundan realize something's wrong. Dropping the shield, he ducks, lying prone and dodging the arrow at the last instant.
"[bi]Touch! Win for the Eastern Province branch of Tamers of Hundred Beasts disciple, Dhundan Kepa![/bi]"
Ster Ling starts throwing a fit, drowned in the thunderous applauds, yourself hitting your palms until they hurt.

In the end, the Eastern Province branch of Tamers of Hundred Beasts won the tournament, with two spots in the best of four.
This is the ranking of the gifted an potentially, future genius. You're really happy of your placement, despite feeling like you don't belong :
Could you have won against Ai? How many are there in the town which didn't wanted to fight, and are stronger?
Your doubts dissipate when Ryota congratulate both of you for the amazing results, the good strategical thinking putting the sect first, and the overall display of skill.
"See? Only a little push half a year ago, and you grew tremendously."
You feel less like an impostor. The Horse master nods, and mumble how you were a perfect recipient for that Horse Spirit.

The day moves on, with older age categories progressing. In the end, the most successful sect is the Stable Lotus Sect - perks of being the richest around, more riches to nurture promising students you guess.
Of course, the military youth score victories in the two ages categories above your own - but they quite soon fall behind, as the spiritual arts of the other sects are almost unmatched.

You're lost in thought, recalling the several discussion you had today.
The most intriguing people where, by far, the Buddhist Monk watching the fights; thus you approached them and simply asked.
They were all quite grown up, not uttering a word. Their leader, an old man at least 30, answers you with a nice smile.
"We monks are non-violent. However, the world does not agree with our philosophy. As Spiritual guardians, we have to shield people from threats. We solve this paradox by refusing laying hand on humans, while still fighting monsters.
This is why we're here : my pupils can definitely get insights from watching the battles."

Then, you beeline toward Lienwen Yaner, paying little attention toward the current battle on the field.
But before you can ask her anything, she takes the initiative.
"I have a question : Why did you humiliated me by stepping down in the challenge? The least you could do was winning the tournament to soften the blow to my honor!
- What? There was no way I could win against Ster Ling - not even talking about Dhundan. At least, you can tell yourself you lost against someone undefeated?"
Somehow, that seems to score some points with her.
"All right. I'll win next time - don't lose to anyone other than me!
- Allright, but you'll have to reach me. How someone so advanced in her cultivation is so weak?"
You dosed it perfectly. She admires you somehow - so you can capitalize on that and her Ego to scout for information about her and her style for next time.
"Everybody knows Stable Lotus style is based on Spiritual Arts! That mean I can't display the Sect's might before reaching the 2nd realm!"

How do you feel about the Young Mistress?
>Annoying and Weak. Little talent, just well born. She'll probably grow up into an insufferable master.
>Friendly enough. Maybe she can become a friend in the future?
>You like her, and she push your buttons just the right way. Definitely rival material.

But you spend most of your time with Ping Jun.
Over the day, you discuss the daily life in the sects. Versatile Harmony actually makes him do wildly different exercises every day, including pill-making, crafting, beast-taming, cultivation, caligraphy, music and origami) until he chose those he prefers.
He's wildly interested in your spiritual beast. Although you don't say anything about your cultivation technique itself and the details of the spirit-bonding, he manifests strong interest about a Spiritual Beast, after you tell how you captured the Hawk.
He insists he'll do his best to compensate you if you happen to bring him such a boon at the next occasion students of sect should meet.
Overall, you have a pleasant day. You feel, for the first time, you made a real friend : much in common - not being the strongest of the sect but surely in the best three of your age tend to do that.
>>
You snap back into the present. You'll capitalize on the current opportunity as hard as you can. Instead of heading to the treasury, and get a weak item barely mystical, better learn a technique in your mind.
You immediately swerve toward the Sun Adorators. Some are displaying Spiritual Techniques. No use to you except looking at the lights, which almost immediately hurt your eyes. Better look for the weapon masters.
Three of them in particular caught your eyes : they wield a Saber, a Spear, and a chain linking two metal round weights.

"Alright, watch this. Sun Splitting Saber!
- The Spear of Helios, Vengeful Spear of the Sun God!
- The grace of Orbital Motion, Blinding Meteor Hammer!"

All those move are hard to watch - like the time they made you stare at the sun. The Saber skill is literally unwatchable. The Meteor Hammer skill is even worst - still, when you asked to try the weapon, you felt a hard kinship with the weapon.
The Sun Adorator master evens comment that your low Sun affinity is quite unfortunate. But the spear skill displayed... There's something you just get, despite the Sun part completely eluding you.
The Spear Technique is straightforward : it capitalize on the opening created in an opponent's guard when their weapon is striking you. Good part is allowing a sure hit. Bad part is you'll have to take a hit first.
>Learned Spear skill : Vengeful Spear

"'Tis a shame the Sun didn't chose you. You seem like a worthy disciple for the Twin Star Styles.
- 'Tis a shame you didn't joined the Military Youth. You would had made a damn fine Weapon Specialist.
- Well, the boy is fine where he is."
The Hawk master, walking from behind, put a protective - possessive? - claw-like hand on your shoulder.

And just like that, the tournament is over; every sect heads back toward their compound. On the way back, you're left on your own - praise is focused on the two winners of the day.
You're thoughtful - thoughts flying toward your new friend, Ping Jun. Your new rival, LienWen YanEr, will probably continue her fulgurent ascension in cultivation - you'll have to pull twice the effort to not fall behind.
However, you got something more of this whole tournament : your cultivation progressed, and you think you might be close to have another Breakthrough in one of your techniques. Which one?

Your daily life in the sect resumes.
Aiming to capitalize on the hindsight in your technique the fights granted to you, you focus on your cultivation on the incoming week.
Of course, the two first sessions doesn't grant you more than usual progresses in your cultivation - which is still appreciable.
However, you ponder a lot about the use of bonded spiritual beasts in your cultivation. Granted, they move the threads from your body to your aperture, but there's more to it : you can summon them, they empower your related techniques.
Why? How? Until you glimpse at the mechanism's gear at the end of a week with every moment dedicated to put them under scrutiny.

You pulled a good enough amount of threads of Qi and Blood during this week. But while your spiritual Hawk and Horse funnels them toward your aperture, you feel there's something more with your Astral self.
Mainly, why do you see a Wolf and a Snake? Why no other animals? Will it be forever like this?
Plus, you're not bonded to any Wolf or Snake spirit : where are they coming from?
Your gaze shift, showing a wooden door ornate with snakes engraving. Your spiritual self pushes it.
You are sucked in. You see from above a subterranean maze - somehow seeing through the rock walls - with each turns leading to caves with various environment : crystal, lava, forest, light, darkness...
You fell face first. Picking yourself up, you are surrounded by Spiritual snakes. Small ones - a nest?
They rise, hissing. You attempt to calm them.
>24
To no avail. A first one, Golden, jumps at you. You brace for impact - but the spiritual Hawk is already let out, tearing the assailant to shreds.
You dodge while all around you, snakes launch a relentless assault - most are golden, but some are deep crimson, one is strikingly rainbow-colored, and a few seems made of pure element : Fire, Thunder, Rock, Water.
You hold on a few seconds, until a more potent spiritual snake awoke - made of a blinding pure light. You turn on your heels, and flee.
Mind numbing pain. Your leg have been stabbed, a fang completely traversing your left thigh. You fell. In your back, the Horse - when did he appeared? - charges the Light Snake, get dispelled in a tail whip-motion. The Hawk charges for your sake, and is dispelled in a blast of light.
With both your spiritual beasts hit, you feel weaker, on the verge of exhaustion, in addition to your wound. You turn from your stomach to your back, only able to see the attack coming from your throat.

You're pulled back from the Spiritual realm.
"You're alright, kid?"
The Snake mistress is bent over your prone self.
"I... think so? Wait, what's in my hands?"
You can see relief upon her face while you speak. You look at your hands - a few snake scales, a moult, a fang, a couple viscera, a stone?
Wait, the pain in your leg haven't subsided. Is that... blood?
"Wait, I'm... not... so... well..."
Blood gush from the wound.
"Quick! someone with a fast beast! He needs to be taken to the Infirmary!". The world fades to black.
>>
You awake in a comfortable bed. You immediately throw the sheet up - and see blood-soaked bandages, circling the upper part of your leg.
"You're awake? Good. Don't move - I'll fetch Maya Tao"
You have no clue who's the person who talked, or who Maya Tao is. You're too worry being concerned about your bonded beasts - you circle your meditation technique.
There they are - even though more incorporeal and ethereal they should be, even in the astral world. You have the certitude they'll be safe once they'll have recover their energy - once you'll have recover your energy.
Relieved, you open your eyes on the Snake Master, with a concerned frown on her brow.
"Don't attempt to go back there while wounded!
- I'm not that stupid.
- You're definitely not stupid : not even a cultivator, yet able to walk in a spiritual realm. You were quite lucky I was there to pull you back.
- What are those realms?
- Worlds one step away as well as an infinite distance away from ours. Entering them are rare, lucky events. This is the home of the Spiritual beasts; they sometime leave it in events like Transplanhumance.
Speaking of, did you catched a Spiritual beast? Spiritual beads are transported in those planes and back, as well as treasures.

- No. I haven't realized I could. Are the thing I've found treasures?
- Yes. They are high-grade ingredients - they can be used in rituals like the Spirit Bonding ceremony, or the creation of treasures.
The wisest course of action would be trading it to the sect. But your most important boon is the fact you've entered and come out of the Spiritual Snake realm. At such a young age, it means this plane will be easier for you to reach in the future.
Also, your affinity toward "Snakes" in general shall have progressed.

- What else could be found in those realms?
- Treasures. In addition to material, treasure-weapons, insignia, clothes can be found. You can also find secret techniques, as well as spiritual beasts. The luckier cultivator can also find hidden legacies and inheritances."

You spend the rest of your seven month in the infirmary, recovering your strength - recovery sped up by your Qi and Blood pills.
You feel like you owe the sect for saving your life, thus you've given all the materials collected to the treasury.
It's been seven month since you joined the Eastern Province branch of Tamers of Hundred Beasts.
With your high favor, as well as your last gift to the sect, the Elders have decided to reward you.

Over the course of the seven month, you spend less and less time in the infirmary and more and more time outside, resuming your daily duties (including dung-shovelling)
You approach the Snake master during your daily tasks, after making a full recovery from the attack on your Astral Self - still, that left a mark you might bear your whole life.
However, you're seriously falling behind in cultivation - Dhundan reaped the rewards from winning the tournament, opening his heart aperture. Ai overtook you while you recovered, so did Sin Din, Man Din and Norm Yi.
Other kids have joined the "advanced" group - none that you especially care about.
You can't let the last encounter seal your fate. You decide to go back exactly the same spiritual realm; this time asking for the sect's support.
You approach the Snake Mistress on that subject.
"Brave of you. However, you'll have to know it's not something that can just happen like that. We're preparing an excursion next month. Train diligently meanwhile."

And so you did.
You wonder about if you should focus your attention on your Fighting technique - improving your fighting capacity to the best your cultivation allows - or focus on filling your Aperture.
>Qi and Blood pills available
So you do both. On the plus side, you made a complete recovery without sequels. You're stronger than you've ever been. On the minus side, you didn't filled your Aperture this month.
You think it's your wound that impeded you - despite the basic speed provided by your two spiritual beasts.
That's a shame, but nothing can be done about that, other than diligently cultivating in the future.

Soon enough, the fated day - the fated evening - comes by.
You're called from the dormitory by the Snake Mistress, and go wait in the main compound courtyard. A few other disciples are fetched, you recognize them as the most gifted snake-tender - hey that's Kyo Ko!
"Why is that kid there?
- Pity?
- He's the one that got bitten, right?
- So shameful.
- He made it to the Half-final in the tournament and was wounded in the spiritual realm we're going into - spiritual realm he entered by himself. He's brave and my personal Lucky charm. Leave him be."

Everybody falls silent when the Snake Master enter the courtyard with the last disciple.
You're handed another Spiritual Bead, and the group start meditate in a room close to the infirmary, the red-hair girl that tended your wound directly present.
All of you start meditating and circulating the sect's technique. Incense is burned, and you focus on the door half a step away. Smoke reach the astral world, and turns into the familiar door. You pushed it once again.

Hmm, the Spear sounds like it would help, for sure, and the Cosmic makes it sounds protagonist-y.
But I'm partial to the poison. The entire point of it should be our last secret technique. Secret because we'd only ever show it to people we're trying to kill. But then again killing a fellow cultivator usually comes with consequences. As for the guardian, we seem to be going more glass canon anyway. Also, defensive snake sounds rather strange. Uncanny dodge rather than a shield, perhaps? One that could be refined into a movement technique?
I'll go poison but I could see myself voting for all 3 depending on build argumentation.
>Life-ending Poison Snake
Also, the Spiritual Snake is a 4-word. Would it be more powerful, but harder to control and grow?
>>
>>5908855
I think that because it is the third down and the last 2 are empty, that it is the strongest one. or the most valuable/high tier.

You turn around, and Kyo Ko is behind you, launching and catching a blue marble with a dao-too-bright wriggle.

"I wanted to capture this one!

You shut up. In truth, you don't know if you could have done it. And you quite enjoy retaining your physical integrity. Still, this cemented the view in the eye of the bigger disciples you're a small fry that got lucky in the past.
You don't want to break that image - for it's true and safer for you.

You have more time for appreciating the landscape. This realm is made of an interconnection of tunnels of varying width; carved in a scale pattern. Each step let you see spiritual beasts - big, small, strong, weak.
However, most interesting preys such as elemental-made snakes are snatched just under your nose. Well, such is life of an insect among true practitioners.
On one hand, you feel like this out-of-world adventure is a reward in itself. The uncomfortable feeling of pressure and not-belonging makes the main world and your own hesitation feel petty.

That is, until the one insulting you to begin with snaps back in the main world.

"Allright, looks like most of you guys time is out. You'll snap back depending on your own affinity and power level"
You recognize this as your best chance. Your rivals have either snapped back or spent their beads - you quickly rush in a previously unexplored corridor, where a particular spirit catch your eye.
You release the Hawk in a surprise kamikaze move, startling the spirit. Hawks get dispelled while you summon the Horse. He's quickly done with too - this is when you slam the spiritual bead, while you feel your spiritual self turn into smoke and getting pulled back in the main world.

>Obtained Cosmic Spear Snake Spirit

Soon, you wake up in the main world, safe and sound. The Snake Mistress is still in deep meditation. Once the field trip is over, you feel spiritual snake energy dramatically increasing and condensing around her. Over the course of the next two hours, various shallow wounds emerge on her body.
Until she opens her eyes, and release a sigh.
"Looks like it was not for this opportunity."

Soon, she gets back to her usual bossy self, helping the group drawing the spirit-binding formation - mostly for first-realm cultivators.
This is when you get a closer look to your catch : the spirit snake holds stiff, with a head without any right to look so pointy and sharp. Dark as the night sky, sparkled with lighter spots, you feel a profound affinity toward your lucky catch.
Thus, this was the tale of the acquisition of your third beast-spirit.
It's been eight months since you joined the Eastern Province branch of Tamers of Hundred Beasts.
Because of your wound while entering the Snake Realm, and your second quite poor performance linked to say realm, your standing in the sect plummeted.
From close-to-genius, you're turning into a diligent, a tad more than average blur in the mob of disciple.
How do you feel ?
>Miserable. You're not gifted by the Heaven, but being a cultivator is standing tall and proud against the Heaven's lightning. You'll burn all your remaining Qi and Blood pills [10] in an attempt to keep up with the genius
>Bittersweet. You'll keep cultivating diligently, using your resources reasonably to speed up a bit the process [consume 5 pills over the next month]
>Really good. Unburden by the shackle of a weight you didn't felt was dragging you down tremendously. You can get use to it [don't consume pills]

>Ask your masters if we have solid grounds as a cultivators of or level

Depending on what they say, or how really good our foundations are, I say we either consume the piils to catch up with our friends, or just go the normal route of the bittersweet.

Hell, i'm going to add
>Ask Ai and Dhudan if they think there's a chance we can keep up with them or if they're willing to help us, and if the answer is not, then make clear that they shouldn't feel bad or anything, it was an accident what made us not keeping up

This isn't a question of "what's the sure thing, the cautious thing". This is "Do you want to be the best and will you push yourself to be the best? Or will you give up and accept your own mediocrity"

it's character defining.

Special blogpost time

Player that knows me from other threads know I'm heavily crunch oriented. On the advice and review of nice people of /qtg (thinking about archivebro and RQM in particular) I decided to keep the crunch, but let most of it contained on my side.
This is an attempt to let as few numbers bleed in the thread as possible, while keeping roll prompt for events. Rule of thumb : you roll - there is a chance Protag gets hurt (you were at risk of losing your leg here >>5907470 at 18 or less)

For example, the body tempering liquid prompt would have been one more roll on the side. Mostly inconsequential, but could lead to a breakthrough on good roll.

Cultivation works with couple of rolls. Advantage means I take the best couple of rolls (not splitting couple to take best dice).

So, this happens. Expect fun times.

You have no choice but giving your all. You soon fell in a routine leaving you alone despite the crowd of cultivator around you.
Wake up before everybody. Cultivate one hour. Calithenics. Daily duties, done well and quick to cram in another hour of cultivation. Dung shoveling, cultivate, eat, cultivate. On the verge of exhaustion, go sleep a handful hours, and do it all again.
You focus on your foundation - Hawk's wide Ballet as well as the Way of the Spiritual Beast Whisperer.
Mainly, this is what you feel is lacking, plus there is one more bother : your snake spirit.
When you materialize it, it naturally comes in your hand, stiffening while coiling the far end of its tail around your arm. You got the best weapon one could dream of : bonded to your soul, able to subtly move to land a hit or change the angle of attack.
The head of the snake is surprisingly sharp, able to bury into wood or straw mannequin way deeper than an animal should. This weapon bound to your soul will probably turns into a great asset in the future. However, one detail irritates you deeply :
Although you learned by chance the Vengeful Spear technique, you have no spear cultivation method. Spear and Halberd are fundamentally different, so adapting your Windy Cavalier's Halberd would require a Breakthrough.
Plus, you will need a backup weapon - you spent a day without the Horse and the Hawk after your last incursion; quite unfavorable in a battlefield situation. Also, starting a fight with said backup weapon would mean keeping the spear-snake as a trump.
You're stressed enough by the whole "falling behind" issues, so you cram this problems under a rug in your mind for the future-you to deal with. Still, it bothers you and you have to actively repress the dread.
At first, you find a bit of solace and comfort with Spiritually bonded animals; until on the second day after they materialized back. You realize as they're part of your soul, or destined to be, it's like hugging yourself. You were gazing in the abyss, this realization was a good step forward.
However, not all is grim. Your bonded snake spirit presence smooth your cultivation even more - somehow, your Hawk Wide Ballet benefits greatly from the new spirit.
You don't take time, nor mental energy, to delve on that particular point. Your aperture is filling at an hysterical pace. Until, after one week...
>>
It is midnight, and your sixth cultivation session of the day. Elders have granted you a full vial of Body Tempering Liquid after two days of you bothering them every couple hours for more, granting you total autonomy on your training.
After an especially good physical practice session, where you chained the 18 moves of the Hawk's wide ballet in a 46-combination sequence, your body is brimming with an uncountable at a glance amount of threads. You start circulating them with the Meditation technique.

Ten thread in. Twice as much remains. Your heart aperture wildly warm up - the same exhilarating, filling feeling that procure putting a thread in the metaphorical fishbowl, increased tenfold.
However, instead of a invigorating warmth, heat keeps rising to an uncomfortable level as the stockpiled energy screams for being released.
You keep cramming threads, in a Hawk-Horse-Snake circle optimizing the flow and the output; the most effective way you find to avoid said threads to dissolve.

Heats keep up rising, your focus completely erasing the physical world. Your aperture is full. Thread turns completely liquid, volume double, painfully pushing across the glass ceiling of the aperture. You await for sweet release as pressure becomes unbearable.
You feel the aperture cracking. Times slow down, until coming to a complete stop.
What's happening? Are you getting denied the just reward of your efforts?

Four doors materialize in front of you, adorned in carved beasts - Hawks, Horse, Wolf and the familiar Snake one.
You can feel in your very soul that this occasion is doubly special - such a moment will grant more reward in the exploration to come.
>Chose to push yourself despite the risks to your psyche : you won't get the choice to step back here?
So, which door will you push this time?

Back to basics. This is a heavenly opportunity, we must seize it with as must power as we can muster, and we are the most experienced with the hawk. After all this breakthrough is because of us stringing the hawks ballet together.

You turn away from the familiar, enticing, snake door. The best call seems to be the wolf plane - despite your envy of having a pair of hawk, roosted one on each shoulder, you decide to round up your spiritual rooster.

You push the door.
Behind lies a realm of a stary night with a bright full moon. Mountains covered in woodland, with a rock promontory dominating the scenery.
You fell toward a wolf-filled clearing.
"A lost cub? Perfect."
Your journey is highjacked. Rerouted toward the promontory. Pressure rise - exceeding far the relatively low influence of Dhundan.
You're afraid your mind will collapse, while darkness surround you. Pressure is marginally less crushing.

"Rejected by his mother, the cub is wondering about his place in the pack."
The voice is guttural, coming from all direction at once.
You try to circulate your meditation technique. Dire mistake - the veil rips for a plit second, revealing an assembly of wolf spirit of all shape and colors, each mighty enough to gaze you to death.
You quickly stop. The veil shroud them once again. It's better than facing immediate death, but you wish you didn't knew what lurked in the shadows

"A bold one? Relentless, and putting the pack above himself? You might grow in a fine guardian under some... guidance."
Your mind race wildly. Is this a legendary opportunity, to be a chosen one, the lucky encounter setting a young cultivator on the path of genius?
"Are you... proposing to merge with me? Impart me the Primodrial Wolf Hidden Legacy maybe?"
If you seriously think this can happen, re-read thread name and first four lines of opening post
The Primordial Wolf laugh at your hubris, and doesn't dignifies you with an answer.
>>
"This son of mine only wants to grow - he can on your side.
Be wary, as this is not a gift but a curse : most people that can glance at my scion and perceive its worth will try to rip it from you.
"

The spiritual bead on your pocket is snatched, and put back. You feel the weight of the new burden.
You wonder a second if handling it to the sect wouldn't be the safest course of action. Your other pocket is filled.
"You'll need materials. You'll draw the formation and will conduct the ritual immediately."

You're propelled back in the main world, still under shock. Your mind expands, the bind of the immense spiritual pressure disappearing at the instant you left the Spiritual plane
You feel like a suffocating person able to greedily inhale once again. That's when the acupoint bottleneck finish shattering.
>>
Power surge through your body, through your veins.
It's been eight month and one week since you joined the sect. Since your fifth anniversary. Today, you officially became a Cultivator.
Your head spin; the pressure, self imposed as well as the terrifying encounter, prevents you to appreciate this landmark.
The fear of not being worthy enough and fall behind is enhanced by the new secret you'll have to hide.

You order the wolf to sit, while you draw the now-familiar circles, and fill them with your pocket's contents : a wolf skull, a bamboo sprout which seems to be naturally ornated with wolf patterns, a obsidienne and quartz Yin-Yang, with both forces represenete as a carved wolf.
All those precious relics turns to ash while you complete the binding ritual.

Then, you realize : your Heart aperture opened. You're no longer dependent on Body Tempering Liquid, which can now be used as a weak Qi and Blood pill.
Good for you, as three servings of Body Tempering Liquid remains in your medicine gourd. You didn't had time to consume all your Qi and Blood pills - you still have five of them, due to your unexpected breakthrough speed.

You go to sleep. Your slummer is not restful.

You wake up just in time for calisthenics. You're approached by the Snake Mistress.
"Today you go to town.
- What? But tasks! cultivation!
- You're training too hard since you stepped in Snake realm. It's not good for you. This is a sect-imposed, mandatory rest day.
I can see you broke through. This should make you insufferably happy, which you're not. Take this.
"
She give you a string, tying together a collection of bronze coin, round and with a square-shaped hole in the middle.
"Your disciple outfit should deter trouble. But I'll understand if you don't want to be on your own."

>Ask for someone to come with you for the day [Who?]

In the end, you ask Ai, Dhundan and Kyo Ko to come to town with you. Kyo Ko seems quite happy, Ai take that as a statement, and Dhundan seems a bit scared, then calms down in the idea of the incoming good time.

The four of you gets walking south-east from the sect compound to Stable Lotus Harbor. Ai start her hops, quite quickly the two of you in the dust. Two of you? Where is Kyo Ko?
"So... Both of her have movement techniques?
- Maybe I have too. I just don't want to reveal it."
Ox shit. You summon the Martial Silver Horse.
"Shut up and climb.
- I don't need your help. I can keep up."
Two hundred meters later, you've got enough proof he lied.
"Stop acting so prideful and climb.
- So you're helping me conceal my techniques once again?"
That's the closest you'll get to formal thanks from this bad friend of yours. Girls are waiting you near the city gates. The guards, young adults of the Military Youth, gauge you.
"So this is the one that beat up Ster Ling?
- Maybe we should avenge him?
- You two really want to spark a feud between our sect? Your sergent assigned you to guard duty, and you dare court death?"
They mumble, but let you in.

First thing first, snacks. You aim toward sweets, settling on sugar-glazed fruit skewer
"Wasn't that risky, with those guards?
- No, they're trash. Working on their Dragon Tail and Dragon Claw dantian with 6 years more than me? "
You're unable to tell. First, you are unable to gauge a cultivator's level yet. Second, you don't know about the minor realms of the first stage - so those of the second are arcane knowledge in your eyes.
"Young mistress, you're harsh. Yourself is the oddity - it is sayed that cultivator breaking through the second stage before 10 have a limitless future! You are the gifted ones, be gentle to us normal folks!"

Kyo Ko have the decency to excuse to the old man. In this world, everybody is a cultivator. Your circumstances are good - a disciple seen as promising of a well-established sect. On your own, would you have filled your Heart Aperture before 10?
Slow cultivators are doomed never crossing the second realm. Most people, if focusing most efforts and ressources on their cultivation, can hope to reach the third stage after 60 to 70 years. It is known.
>>
"Alright everyone, snacks. But you'll have to call me 'senior brother'"

Ai accept without raising any question. Dhundan refuses, antagonize you, asking for the honorific as the winner of the tournament. You kindly yells back that he never won against you and he's still owing you a fight, which he denies while cranking up the menacing aura.
The pressure is minimal in regard of the Primordial Wolf Spirit, so you call him a practitionner of the Pitiful Wet Chicken, winning you the trash-talking bout.
Kyo Ko scoffs, and asks you to call her "benevolent senior sister Kyo Ko".
That stops you in your tracks and makes you think. How are you feeling toward her? Truth is, she's strong, a bit mysterious, and a solid support. She's also quite pretty, but this also is normal for cultivator : the body is refined, making practitionner of the secret art uncannily aesthetically pleasant if they wish so.
Other choose a dreadful, mighty, or wise appearance; each got its charm. You feel a tad confused.
>You lack some stade of development called Puberty to investigate more this specific "feeling" matter and get prompted options. Also applicable to Ai.
"Alright, benevolent senior sister Kyo Kyo".
That barb strike true. The cute nickname completely breaks the respect induce by the extremely formal title. And she finds it cute. Complete victory.

Now, what's next? There's a nagging thought that you do something to help your cultivation right now. But what?

You want to check the cultivator's market. All of you head south, toward the Stable Lotus compound - a town in the town, like your own sect's compound. Except bigger, with towers and building shaped like closed lotus flower, countless canals filled to the brim with Lotus flower.
You also think you might have seen a Spiritual beast or two, catching a glimpse at a snake delving among them. You wonder if Lienwen Yaner is training right now.
You unglue your eyes from the city lord's compound. On the same city square, the headquarter of the town's Military, a couple shops - the most expensive doctor, inn, potter, caligraph and tailor of town - as well as a covered market. The cultivator's market.

Your group step inside, under the treasure-chest-on-a-boat sign. Adult are zooming around dragging carts of valuable materials, in the counter-alleys letting cultivators wearing the familiar outfits of Stable Lotus Harbor various sects.
You go from stall to stall.
Metals imbued with elemental energy. Blood vial charged with energy of their potent lines. Spirit grass. Lightning in bottles. Even an impossible stands selling flames embued with other element, such as the water-flame hybrid burning in a jar of seawater.
But the first thing really drawing your eye is a stall selling various Cultivation Resources : Qi and Blood pills and Body Tempering Liquid, that you already know of. Some other pills are said to help break other apertures open, improving eyesight, smell, and audition.
Some other pills, out of your budget, are said to increase temporally affinity toward some elements : useful for exploiting to the best some special opportunity if you have such a pill on hand at a critical time.
You're the only one even remotely interested in those. Kyo Ko deem them "too weak for me, or too situational for the price" . Ai "doesn't like the taste" of Body Tempering Liquid and Qi and Blood pills.
Dhundan think buying some is a "crutch mediocre cultivators use to delude themselves into believing in their potential."
You point out he's a faggot (no clue why firewood-allegation is an insult) as pills were useful for you and your training. He say you're not the same as "you're strong, thus its rightful when you do it".
There's a nagging feeling something is off with this reasoning, but in the end you kinda agree : might is right.

Another stall seems filled with product your sect provides.
A repellent of spiritual beasts, making long travel safer - "Those are useless - we have techniques for that".
Spiritual beads are damn expensive - way out of your current budget. You are glad to still have a spare one in pristine condition - the one holding the wolf spirit broke, maybe because of the repeated usage from Horse to Snake to Wolf?
>>
You're a bit curious toward weapons and armors. The shopkeep humors you, making a great point on how wasteful it might be to buy a spiritual weapon that won't fit you one year later.

Then, a medicine seller. Antidotes of countless poisons you never heard of, remedies of cultivator-specific affliction, energies complement to realign levels in case of imbalance, and several Medicinal Pills.
Physical Medicinal pills allow to recover from wounds from minor to serious. It won't regrow a cut limb or torn organ by itself.
Spiritual Medicinal pills could help you recover a dispelled bonded Spiritual beast almost instantly.
Mental Medicinal pills must certainly have an use too. You're not sure what could deplete your mental energy though.

Last, a stall of produce. You wonder why they are in the cultivator's market, until the shopkeep tells you about how Prolific Valley, a close town, grow renowned Spiritual Fruits, delicacy brimming with energy helping with cultivation like pills could, alleviating the shortfalls of abusing of said pills.

You don't delve much more in the market, and leave toward the library.
The building, quite old, present a recent extension. You step in, and an old man smiles while greating your group in.
"Welcome young masters and mistresses. Oh, winner and third of this year's tournament? It seems genius are blessing Old Jiang today.
- What do you have for cultivators?
- Surprisingly, treaties roughly at the price of the papers they're written on. A recent development - all sects of the town gave away a few of their techniques for the library! Never heard of that before, here or in Prolific Valley City and Stiff Cliff Fort."
You look at the various treaties. You still can't read - yeah, that might cause problems.
Of course, the only relevant technique your sect gifted the library is the Hawk's wide Ballet, the Military Youth gifted a sword treaty of all things, and other techniques are at least second stage. Useless to you.
However, something catch your eye. It is on the regular section. Something maybe expected to appeal to a young child.
An old, doggy-eared tale book, green and brown like your robes.
"What's this, old Jiang?
- A good choice, dare I say. The true story of Gar Ruk the Druid, Realm Wanderer. Don't let the name fool you - it's children tales. But good ones."
It's within reach of your funds.

In the end you spend the remaining coins on...

No point buying a book you can't read. Better spend the remaining coins in more fruits.
You thank the bookstore owner, and move back to the cultivator's market. With the end of the day, activity is winding down. You find the Prolific Valley stall while the merchant are starting to tidy up.
"Mister seller, do you have fruits for first stage cultivators? How much?"
They answer. You won't be able to buy enough for the fourth of you... Not with that attitude, at least.
"What if I told you they would be to eat here and now? I'm sure some of them are ripe, to the point they won't be good tomorrow? I'll buy them for this much!"
Either the merchant is sensible to your point or the cuteness of your group, but you get a small discount.
The fruits are sliced, mixed with honey, spices and placed under several spiritual flames - one that look like it burns... cold?, and given to you in cups.
You all indulge in the delicacy. It's sweet, fresh, hot. Light cream counterbalance the deep flavor of the spiritual fruit, flavor of regular fruits enriched with spiritual energy.
It's delicious, and filling. The four of you shut up and appreciate, even Kyo Ko which level is high enough so that the treat should be almost effect-less on her.
"So Dhundan, not calling me a melon-licker or anything?
- Yeah, you're merely a melon-licker! I'm a melon-biter, kneel!
- That sound painful, don't let your melons get biten Ai."
Ai doesn't says anything, busy picking the remaining cream with her fingers and licking them clean. You're not sure of what she means, but stare at the young girl nevertheless.
"What? Oh, thank you for treating me again, Senior Brother!"
>>
With all said and done, you ride back to the sect.
In the end, this day out helped you feel better. You feel validated by the other geniuses of the sect, despite knowing in the depth of your soul you're not their equal.
The next day, you wake up and do calisthenics. Then, you're ordered to go with the other disciples working on opening their Eye aperture.
The younger of the group are Dhundan, Ai and you. Other kids are six to eleven - granting you some resentful gaze as yet another gifted kid coming from below to steal opportunities and sect focus from them.
The Snake Mistress takes you on the side. She nods approvingly upon seeing you.
"You are in better shape today kid. Never forget : taking time to sharpen the axe doesn't make the tree-falling longer.
- Thank you. For that, and yesterday...
- Good kids like you deserved to be spoiled from time to time. Now, back on work : next step for you is opening the Eye Aperture.
You don't need Body Tempering Liquid anymore to coalesce your Qi and Blood in thread. Move, and start your cultivation. Your eye aperture is hourglass-shaped, hidden behind your eyeballs. Work diligently.
One important thing : take care of spiritual realm. You got away with entering them because of your low-level, but you're a cultivator now. Entering a spiritual realm will let the beasts inside know a tasty snack just entered, and you will be submitted to greater danger.
The spiritual beast you merged with are bounded by your own level in addition to their limits; don't do anything stupid now you're aware alright?

After this nice vacation day, you get back to diligent practice, not putting yourself under much pressure : the sect's allocated amount of training is, you found out while talking to Ping Jun, already generous.
The most groundbreaking change is the lack of need of Body Tempering Liquid. With each of your heartbeat, your blood flow through your now open heart aperture.
Martial practice or body tempering techniques rise the Qi present in your blood, Qi-enhanced blood then flow through the energy nexus of the opened Heart Aperture, spinning itself into threads.
The rest of the process is the same as the one that lead you to open your Heart aperture : spiritual beasts grasp the threads in the Astral world, and pull them on the aperture's opening.

Slowing down on the crunch, associated with your previous luck, seems to pay dividends : your Eye aperture is slowly filling up, thread by thread.
You steadily progress, even catching up with the two genius. First, Ai, held back by her lack of bounded spirit. Then, you catch up with Dhundan; not the "sitting idly meditating diligently" kind, despite his impressive physical prowess.
That feels great. Until Ryota comes back to talk to everybody :
"It's time to leave for the Main Sect Tournament."

You're quite surprise not being warned previously, while the Hawk Master indicate with an head motion you have to leave with the other chosen disciples.
You're flabbergasted. Why haven't you been warned of that earlier?
"Oh, we did tell that the day I sent you into town. I personally warned the kids that went with you once you came back.
We didn't told you because you would have pushed yourself too much.
"
Is your face as easy to read as an open book? Sneaky Snake Mistress! If you had known, you would have burn through your whole reserve of pills while also training your mounted fighting technique and...
Yeah, you kinda see her point.
"I see you're understanding. This is one of the boon of cultivators : they tend to be smart.
Is smarts necessary for cultivation, thus creating a selection bias? Does fool deviate more easily in their practice?
Or are strong people enable to exact their vision? Or maybe, as the body is tempered, the mind follows, letting gifted people ahead in their cultivation overtake in more ways the slower disciples.
This mistress can't answer.
"

Carts are readied - several master are coupling them to numerous beasts of higher-level disciples. You are grouped by age : disciple of 5, 6, 7, 8-10, 11-14, 15-20 for the younger; older are grouped by cultivation level.
You are grouped with Dhundan, Yi Norm, Sin Din and Man Din. The later three are still working on their Heart Aperture.
And soon, the Flame Boar couple leading your cart runs, until their fire-laced steps... doesn't step on the road any more. Stepping on thin air, your cart follows the previous ones, in a long line.
Under you, the sect's compound becomes smaller, smaller and smaller.
You feel...
>Anguished. The rumbling of the cart means you're one swerve away from plummeting way too fast and way too long to your promised doom
>Blasé. This is a world of Jade and Gold, of Phoenix and Dragons, of Pills and Talismans, of Martial and Spiritual arts. What is a flying cart travel surprise among that?
>Thrilled. Feeling the rush of wind in your hair and the sheer speed of movement feels exhilarating

...

A few moment later, you decide to ask for more information.
"So, where are we going? what are we looking for?
- The main sect is in another town, not quite here - we have two weeks of travel despite our speed
- And the tournament?
- Team fight based. Touch for taking out, like in Stable Lotus Harbor one.
One more thing : there is a matter of teams and captains. It will start with a brawl, then round-robin individual fights. Captain's taken, all the team out.
Speaking of, everybody, we agree I'm the captain?
"

We are a lad.

>Agree that he should be team captain, but they should follow our callouts.

I went back and forth on this. But Dhundan has a much higher level of durability than we do, and thats important, because a captain loss is a total loss.

We have a movement technique, which I thought might be worth something, but some of the other teams might have some as well.
Overall my argument is that we have a better head on our shoulders than Dhundan, but he is the safer pick for captain. We can collaborate.

>Disagree. He's not the best strategist. You are, and you being the captain is better because
>>He's going to be the main fighter, and the tank as the strongest one among us. It doesn't make sense for him to be captain when he's going to do the bulk of the fighting, a captain needs to stand back, and lead the others. And- no offense Dhudan, you aren't exactly the leading type with your personality. Also wink and say we have an ace up our sleeve should things get hairy.

Dhudan really should not be captain despite being the strongest. We barely got him to stop being completely anti-social, and I don't see him as an "intelligent" type, both things that are needed to be a decent leader. Collaboration can only do so much when dealing with a stubborn 6 year old.
>>
>>5916967
>Thrilled. Feeling the rush of wind in your hair and the sheer speed of movement feels exhilarating
with an undercurrent of anguished though, heights are scary

>Agree. NOT because he's the strongest, but because he's tankier.
I'd argue if not for the team goes down with the captain rule. We're more offensively oriented while he has the pangolin dark shield technique, so he's better suited to survival.

We should be on par if not stronger than him right now though, especially since he's apparently not even using items. He may be a genius but he's not a one in a quadrillion ultimate prophesied one.

You have around half of the optimal reasoning. However, here's one more information that your character knows : the Defensive technique of Dhundan seems to be a Frontal shield.
>>
>>5917737
A mount is a movement technique when he doesn't have either.

Well he can also manifest qi a lot better than we can. Before heart apature, in fact, so that shield [in spite of only guarding the front] is bound to be much stronger than before.

"I disagree. You're not the stronger for sure."
He becomes all red, but before he chokes, you add :
"But you're the most durable for sure. And with the captain out, all the team gets taken.
Just, listen to us. We'll cover your dead angles, so follow our callouts.
- Yeah, yeah."

You don't let this "enter one ear, get out of the other" reaction deter you. After all, it's not everyday you can fly.
You're thrilled, and overall having an amazing time. What's best, novelty doesn't wear of over the course of the few following days.
You can't see the sea anymore (how BIG is the sea, to start with? You'll have to investigate the matter), and the green plains with rolling hills gave way to a few mountains, then abrupt slopes covered in forest.
Time flies - it's already been three days, where you diligently cultivated (although hiding it a bit), while your companions seems bored out of their mind.
The caravan took a detour to avoid the highest peak, but you're amazed : tree leaves look like a green sea from above.
Forget the scary water : you want to walk and roam in this woods. You gaze so much down you almost fell after the cart entered turmoil, but you came back gazing down quite soon.
There seems to be some kind of calling for this environment. That's not so hard to rationalize - you just have to think about your bonded animals.
Hey, maybe that's why this "Dream Wanderer" book seemed nice to you?
>>
Before you can delve more on this feeling...
"Sky Shark! At least True Monarch level! "
True Monarch? That's like the... 6th realm? Are all of you doomed?

The empowered voice of Ryota reached all carts. Of course, you first year cultivator are useless, as well as all first stage cultivators.
However, a good number of cultivator have already reached second stage, True Master. The master themselves are at least at the peak of third stage, Battle King.
Countless explosion, as well as a few flying Spiritual Beasts, are sent to attack the threat.
Of course, individually each could be ignored, sweeped by a backfin of the dominating monster. But such a barrage from so many cultivator can, and is, hurting the beast.

The first barrage of attack was not enough to deter the Flying Shark Monster - the strength of a 6th stage monster is nothing to scoff at.

You step up, and send your Bonded Hawk assault the monster alongside your sect's comrade.
Another spirit rise behind your back and attack from your cart - another Hawk? Who's got that? Its shape looks blurry and is hard to look at.
Your gaze naturally shifts toward Bathias, but his own Spirit Hawk - made of fabric? is currently circling your cart.
Your send your Hawk circling the Shark - you don't need to take a blow to your Astral Self while shielding the monster at the same time from one of the spiritual blast.
Speaking of blasts, they are from all shape and form. Ice spears, fire blast, searing flashes, ominous curses.
You'd like to say you wish to reach that stage, but none of those elements, close to the part of your soul encased in the Hawk, resonate deeply with you. Well, fire skills seems not as bad, but how much comes from the Hawk's spirit Flame element?
Your Hawk start pecking at the Flying Shark, with little-to-no effect. Meanwhile, said Shark rushes in an insane short-speed burst to attack one of the cart - housing some of the grown disciples - toppling it, sending the cultivator screaming.
Ryota jumps from his own cart, sending his staff which split in three, and spins insanely fast. The squat tanned man steps on the platform.
You're witnessing the fabled ability of fourth-stage cultivator : the ability for Inborn Realm cultivator to use what is mostly known as the "Sword Controlling Art". Looks like Ryota found, or made, his own technique for triple-staff control.
Riding the disk, Ryota plunges, catching the three unlucky disciples - ignoring the one that spawned wings in his back and the one which grasped the toppled cart.

That might have been the best target for the shark, disrupting five of the spellslingers among the cultivators. Still, his target was too strong for his ability.
None of you is close to the sixth realm. But quantity have a quality of its own.
Despite higher-grade cultivator being akin to natural disasters and fearsome to face, the view of a single person able to face an army of mediocre talented people is almost laughable. But not unheard of.
The shark didn't came back after attacking the cart. It would have taken more to slay it, but your fellow disciples weren't even hurt in the attack.
Some might develop vertigo-related inner demon though.
>>
Dhundan is stoic, Yi Norm and the Din sister seems shaken. Bathias recals his Silk Hawk, and the journey resume.
There are some water jugs, as well as fasting pills - a whole meal no bigger than your big toe in the cart. Higher level cultivator can spend several days without sleeping.
There are still a couple stops each day : after all, the younger needs to relieve themself.
Some kids discuss among different carts, other quickly cook something tastier than a fasting pill.
You looked for Kyo Ko, but she's not part of the trip : as Ai, she's not interested in fighting in turnaments.

You are around halfway to the Tamers of Hundred Beasts Astral Conclave.

You lie on the deck, staring at the blue sky - thankfully empty of sky sharks.
Funny how adventure story you heard in the past never insisted on the length, wait and light boredom of travel.
"Are we there yet?
- Five minute of travel lesser than when you last asked. Still a few days away Dhundan."
Yeah, the other ones does not live it as well - especially Dhundan. Still, you already grieved the impossibility for you to cultivate on such reduced space - your body technique is called the "Hawk Wide Ballet" for a reason.

In other words, booger flicking time.

[...]

Your nose is painfully clean of any more ammmo. And Dhudan is brooding. You'll have to take the lead on the strategic aspect.
"Alright. What's the game plan?
- Game plan?
- For the incoming fight. How are we organizing ourself, team leader?
- I'll rush toward the opponent and beat them up.
- So play offense? Yeah, dogpiling the other teams' leader is the simpler strategy. However, maybe we can be a bit smarter? Letting the tougher guys wipe out weaklings, and chose our fights?
- Yeah, of course, make sense. I'll let you discuss other stupid simple stuff since you need it."

Looks like your dear leader is oubt of his depth - and poorly hides it.
"Alright. Dhundan will frontline - no way we can deter him or get him to act as a protector, or guardian, or whatever from the size or back.
You know what I can do - I've got the Horse and Hawk spirit, as well as another little surprise. What about you three?
- Well, actually... We've been gifted things.
- One spirit each.
- Especially to make sure we won't hold you two back."
That's great news and a fair bit of pressure.
"How about you guys cultivation? Haven't paid too much attention on the last months...
- I'm the latest in cultivation. However, the masters told me the Spirit I was gifted is of the higher grade."
Man Din is one of the nicer people you've ever met. She's really chill, and the perfect beast-tamer Jack Of All Trades.

"I've been gifted a Horse spirit. A fast one."
Sin Din, her twin sister, is really gifted with Horse spiritual beast - of the neophytes, she's the only one surpassing your own Horse affinity.

"I'm really close to open the Heart Aperture. My spirit is a Wise Jade Monkey."

Wait a second - you have some Body Tempering Liquid remaining.
It could be useful for your own cultivation, as effective as weak Qi and Blood pills. But maybe it could be gived to your fellow novices?

You shake a bit your small porcelain gourd. The three young not-cultivator-yet instantly recognize the gourd, and the sound of its viscous sloshing.
Their eyes unanimously spark of envy.
"So I could use it for my own cultivation. But I really want us to do great in the incoming thing.

Your interactions with Yi Norm almost completely stop - he's secluding himself, present in body but focused on his cultivation asking not to be disturbed, going under the Realm Stabilization process.

The next day, you give the last dose to Sin Din - she also require space for working on her body technique.

In the meantime, you didn't only twiddled your thumbs.
You walked through the camp, listening to other kids, asking a couple questions.
"So, I wondered... Is that event something that happen every years?
Nah, first time for me.
- I could partake when I was your age - 10 years ago. It's the occasion for the higher sects to look at beginners.
Most promising members of all the branches are sieved.

- Sieved? Branches? Higher sects?
- We are members of Eastern Province branch of Tamers of Hundred Beasts, right?
we are a school-sect as several exist : there are also schools in Northern, Southern, Western, The Wilds, Seaslandia, Skyslandia and Imperial City.
Regarding Higher Sects, as I said we're school sects to mother sects : our best elements go to the Tamers of Thousands Beasts, which in turn can join the great masters bearing title of Tamer of Million Beast.
Last time, there were also guests of the Great Sects - a scholar of the Truefire Spellslingers, and a member of the Imperial Family.

Mother sect win.
Writing.
>>
Well, Bathias might have answers.
"Hey, Bathias. I heard some kids talking about our sect being the daughter to a mother sect. Can you tell me more about it and how it works?
- Well, Tamers of Hundred Beasts usually train people under twenty - by that age, if you didn't reach second stage you're a simpleton by the standard of Lotus Harbor City.
For some remote village, that's a level that beat all expectations. For the Imperial Capital, you'd better reach at least third stage before adulthood to be worth something.
Now, our sect trains a good deal of kid from Lotus Harbor. Most of them will take a mundane job, exploiting best their link with eventually bonded spiritual beast.
The best of them? First, they'll pay back the sect by helping training the next generation. Then, they can join the Tamers of Thousand Beasts.
There, cultivators are trained, from Battle King to Spirit Sovereign - the fifth stage. Then, those with enough dragon patterns on the golden core, which can progress even further, are invited to join the college of master.
The Tamers of Millions Beasts.

- You're third stage already. Does that mean you will change sects for the Thousand Beasts Tamer?
- Didn't you listened? I'll have to teach you brats first!
- Wait, what?
- That's right. Our dear Hawk Master finished to pay his teaching due. He won't make the trip back."

That give you enough food for your thought and those of Dhundan, which brain is currently unexploiting its potential. If only a Master could borrow the head of disciples slacking of, he'll truly be a peerless genius with the keenest mind.

While your thoughts are spinning, the dense forest under the cart's wheels gets thinner and thinner, until it becomes a grassy plain. Several roads chart said plain, linking farmer's hamlets toward the imposing city at the limit of your sight.
With one notable exception : a kingly-sized stronghold, with vast space dedicated to stables, barns, pen and aviaries, interlaced by a multitude of buildings; the whole town-sized sect surrounded by impressive walls.
The Eastern Branch of the sect have such facilities - but this compound have ten times the dedicated space.
Did they really recreate a cove? In the middle of a plain? You can smell the familiar odors of salt and iodine, despite being deep in the lands.
That huge thing you just saw is, indubitably, the tail of a spiritual whale. But it seems to you after a quick glance with your astral sight, improving dramatically now you've started to work on your eye aperture, there are at least a dozen of huge presence under the water
The carts are landing toward a circular building - they have their own Arena? Bigger than Lotus Harbor City coliseum? How rich and powerful is your sect in the end?
You feel very, very small.
Sun is setting soon. For fairness sake, competitors are immediately split toward rooms in the Arena - letting you watch the matches to come, without any opportunity to scout your opponents.
A master wearing the familiar green and brown robes lead you away, while Bathias, the Hawk Master and Ryota (which you now understand is the Boar-master of the sect, took you long enough) waves and wishes you fateful luck.
"The fight will start tomorrow. As the custom, the first fights will be those of the youngest novices.
Here's a welcome gift.
"
Just like that, the man is gone. The small bag contains a finely crafted, half-transparent jug containing Body Tempering Liquid, what you recognize as a Spiritual Energy Pill and a Qi and Blood Pill.
So here you are in a clear lounge, the most comfortable room you've ever been in. Temperature is pleasantly colder than the hot warmth of the late-summer day, and remains constant while the night cover the world in her Yin cold.
The wall giving inside the arena are made of the biggest pannels of glass you've ever seen - ever imagined. Light comes from smokeless, fireless, spiritual torches on the ceiling, drawing on the abundant ambient spiritual energy - denser than your hometown.
Does cultivating here grant more benefits? You'll have to investigate the matter.
>>
But quickly, your strategical minds wheels are turning.
The Body Tempering Liquid is clearly a gift for Novice still working on their heart aperture - a fuel for their techniques.
The Qi and Blood pill can help recover after a exhausting fight, raising your energy back to reasonable levels without delay.
As for the Spiritual Energy Pill, well, it can help restore a dispelled spirit back into shape in minutes instead of days.
But maybe you're thinking too much. It can also just be a gift to the sect's most promising younglings, rewarding them for their diligent work and nurturing their talent?
An idea comes to your mind : Body Tempering Liquid is way less valuable to three of you. Maybe you can force open the aperture of the two girls?
If it miss, you will have less fuel for their techniques. If it works well, the thought of fielding a group of five first minor realm cultivator is enough for you to cackle ominously.
But if it works just barely, their realm might not have time to consolidate, leaving the girls more vulnerable on short-term than if they were just on the verge of breakthrough.
There's also the matter of diluting your importance and standing. Before the trip, you were one of three talented disciples, breaking through in less than a year. Helping Yi Norm made you one out of four. Are you ready to be one out of sixth?
Your progress was mainly thanks to resources; more high level disciples means less for you.
On the good side, convincing Yi Norm should be immediate as he benefited greatly from the resource-sharing policy you enacted in the flight. Dhundan seems utterly uninterested on the gift bag, instead petting some long object bundled in grey-white fabric - his reward from the tournament you think.

Your group have 5 doses of BTL.

This windfall reeks of the irresistible smell of dangerous opportunity. Of course you'll try to abuse it.
You gather all the doses of Body Tempering Liquid. Two of the bottles are given to Man Din, and one to Sin Din.

The twin start circulating their techniques. Better leave them alone, while you stress about tomorrow.

>Man Din : 9,31 : Failure
>Sin Din : 94 - Success in breakthrough

The twin come back. Sin Din is enthusiastically gleeful, Man Din is staring down in a resigned gloom.
2 doses of BTL remains. You hand them to Man Din.
"Here. Don't worry - it would have been worst for us if you broke through but couldn't stabilize in time - speaking of go back training Sin!"
She won't rest tonight - but the surge of energy bottled up in her heart aperture will make that unnecessary anyway.

You pocket one of the empty bottle painted with the 33 beasts, to use as your Medicine jug, instead of the small leather pouch. You're quite happy possessing such a nice object.
With that sorted, it's time to sleep. The beds have cloud-like mattress and smooth sheets. You instantly drifts away.
You wake up at the first lights of the day, from a light knock on the door. You open it, stepping over a droolin but stabilized Sin Din, and the quiet man from yesterday hands you a mouth-watering heavy trail of food.
"Breakfast. Get ready - you fight in one hour and a half."
You blink, and he's already gone.
You gaze down, as your belly rumbles.

"Is that white rice? I feel like a princess!
- The duck is amazing!
- Dry meat is good.
- Then don't hoard it all!"

You eat silently, agreeing with your team mates.
You recognize the lingering flavour, a rich taste of fulfillment. The taste of ingredients rich in spiritual energy.
You can't help but wonder how strong would the disciple of this branch grow to, with such an high-quality environment.

The long-awaited first fight is already here. Another knock, the same discreet man guide you in a preparation room near the Arena.
Dhundan un-bundle his treasured saber while you and Sin Din require halberds, Yi requests a Bo-staff and Man Din a chain.
The man comes back and give you the weapons, while casting the paint-formation thing on you - covering your weapon and bonded spirit beasts.

Your team steps outside, entering the battlegrounds of the Arena in the blinding sun.
"And now, the Decennial Beast Tamers tournament will start!
First, we wish to thank the honorable guests of the sect of the Fist of the Green Dragon and the Paper Tigers, which accepted our invitation.
"
You turn around, and meet the gaze of two impressive Daoist. The first is wearing a black gi with a green sash. The second, a blue-sky kimono with embroidered tigers.

"Defensive array formation! Dhundan, Back Right. Man Din, Front Left. Sin, Front Right. Protect our captain!"
They quickly understand your cunning, and you position.
"And now? I wanna fight!
- Now, we wait."

Most pack stayed grouped, barring the novices of the wilds which dispersed - two going for the Imperials, three for the Southern.
In front of you, the Imperials rushed in the middle of the Arena, surprising both the Seaslandia rushing them, and the two Wilds cultivator gunning for them.
On you immediate left and right, your direct neighbors engaged each other.
By the luck of the draw, waiting was easily the best option for this round.
However, you'll have to take a stance soon. Behind you, you can physically feel Dhundan twitching and bursting with fighting spirit.
What will you do?

1 - Keep the pack grouped

Your unit naturally moves as a whole, engaging the rear of the disciples of Northern branch back.
Said disciples are facing a strongly organized pack which coordination might be even better than yours. The lineup is for Northern Halberdier, Chain wielder, a disciple with metal Claw attached on the wrist, a disciple throwing Needle and a Axeman.
They are respectively facing a Western Lancer, Archer, Shieldbearer, Swordman and Axeman. The Shieldbearer is efficiently positioned to block both the Claw and Chain user, letting the Archer attacking freely while the swordman and Axeman are engaged in melee.
Everything happens quickly : Dhundan strikes down the Chain fighter, Yi pummel the Claw fighter from behind, instantly taking out two opponents, surrounded by a bubble and intangibly dragged out of the arena.
Sin Din and the swordman land a synchronised strike, preventing anybody under the Heavens to know who scored the hit. The result remains the same : the disciple is taken out.
On the far right, Man Din almost scored a nasty chain snap - but had to step back to avoid the Spirit Beast of the Northern cultivator, a Ice Wolf snaring and snapping at her legs.
On your side, the braided blond Halberdier turning her back to you is undoubtedly less skilled than you but overcoming the Lancer quite easily
Unstabilized Heart-opened aperture lancer : -5 resulting in -1 roll
You let the fight reach its natural conclusion before taking out your designated opponent.
One Northern Cultivator remains - most certainly the captain.
Four Western Cultivator remains.

You can see the resignation in the eyes of the guy. Still, he's not going away without a fight, hurling the Ice Wolf toward the girls.
"Alright Western. We take him down, we disengage.
Alright."
The Axe-wielder from Western branch answered and rushed toward the lone Northern cultivator, which turn on his heels to block the attack which his own axe.
Meanwhile, Man Din strike down the wolf with her chain, Sin Din stabs the back of the captain of a one-man squad.
Both your group steps back, and bow respectfully.
You can hear claps from the spectators - the display of fair-play seems to their liking, despite a few jeers amidst the congratulation, probably from the Northern branch cultivators.

Western branch are charging and joining the melee of Imperial, Seaslandia, and Wilds cultivator - melee turning in Imperial favor, with two Seaslandia cultivator down.
Two spirits have been let out - a Shark spirit on Seaslandia side, an Ape on Imperial side.

On the other side of the Arena, Skyslandia cultivator took down two of the Southern cultivator, with a Swallow spirit now circling the fight.
Southern cultivator revealed a colossal Snake spirit, while the Wilds cultivators are shifting position from harassing Southern to Skyslandia

You decide to...

By solidarity toward the Kindred soul with a Snake spirit, you decide to engage the Skyslandia cultivators, which have the upper hand on the conflict - the five of them remains, against 3 Southern and 3 Wilds.
The Swallow spirit shrieks, alerting the whole group of your attack. In particular, the leftmost one locks his eyes with yours.
An elegant girl with fans.
"Onward! Synchronise your attacks with the Southern cultivator group!"
Your formation seems to protect Yi the most, while you give out orders. She takes the bait.
"I'll take the leader. Cover me!"
She turned her head while shouting the order. Dire mistake. You hasten your pace, and thrust.
A sharp beak pierce toward your eye. You block it with your halberd's shaft. This girl will be troublesome to deal with...
>Burned the Skyslandia' leader Crane Spirit!

On your right, a Skyslandia cultivator with a blade in each hand is unleashing several strikes at a Southern cultivator, which divert the attack with a Desert Gerbil spirit.
Yi Norm takes the opportunity, and strike with his staff. At the last second, the Skyslander hurl a Hawk spirit to avoid the blow.
An idle thought spin in your mind. If that girl was the more unlucky in the previous engagement than the Snake-bound one, would you banded with the five girls from Skyslandia instead?

Farther, Sin Din avoid a Hammer strike by summoning her mount, and slash with her Halberd; her opponent shields herself with the wings of her spirit, an Iron Condor
Man Din don't get as lucky. A flail strike, she attempts to coalesce her spirit beast, but a backhand blow triggers the bubble-formation, taking her out of the fight.
>Your teammate Man Din have been defeated.

But this is not the sole matter.
On your immediate right, and with nothing you can do, Dhundan is in trouble.
"Thousand Needle rain"
A strong weapon skill. The girl is literally covered of needles holsters planted in her elaborate hairstyle, along her sleeves, on her blouse, on her trousers.
All of them jumps onward while the girl spins, empower with Qi&Blood energy.
Dhundan's eye widen. His Dark Shield, hastly mounted, blocks a handful needles before collapsing. His Pangolin Spirit clawed at a handful more. This is not enough.
Dropping his ordinary saber, Dhundan unveil his treasured prize from the Stable Lotus Harbor tournament : a sleek, obsidian-black blade. Of course, you're too focus on your own fight to see how it pans out, but your own un-bubbleness leads you to believe he's alright for now.

That is when all the unnaturally-empowered fiber of your bodies scream you to duck.
Just in time - a few of your hair are a tad shorter. The Desert Snake cultivator's spirit coiled around him, diverting the strike. Your Crane-spirit opponent is not as lucky : the surprise attack from the Wilds cultivator took her down.
All of the Skyslandia cultivator are taken away in iridescent bubbles, sinking with their captain.
This saved your own captain, on your direct right.
Now, will you...

Well, you turned out with a way better potential than I expected with the fair randomness I introduced. In particular, you High-risk High Reward play (>>5893213 >>5893218 >>5893278 >>5894103) which resulted in me rolling among the 33 spirit one of the 4 compatible to you + with proprieties you'll find most interresting when it will come to it let you start a snowball and not only keeping up with the genius but also motivating the other "gifted but not great" kids to follow along.
Sure, you're not a one in a million peerless genius. But your highly developped social skills and early luck let a bright future possibly shine.

>>What are the main draw for you?
Exploring the setting, shaping our character's role. The shopping with the various nebulous fors of currency are good. The crafting our moves with word and creativity is a great choice that gives players more control.

>>What are the points to improve?
Slow down a little and have us explore the other charcters and features of the cultivation compound maybe?

>>Does the system works? Do you like the way fight are dealt with?
Perfect. This isn't a survival or horror game so there's no need for constant threat of death or maiming beyond being dumb and pcking a fight more than one realm above us.

>>What are you expecting to see in the future?
A dragon. Maybe two dragons. The opportunity to purchase tests for more affinities or just stumble upon them. Falling behind the other geniuses if our choices are suboptimal and having to find a utility role to play(healer, travel, scouting, face, leadership, crafter so on.) if we do.
