/qst/ - Quests

Jail Quest: a text adventure occasionally illustrated.

A night of drinking and a failed attempt to cheat on cards had landed you the strangest job slash community service sentence you've ever had: ensuring Gongalla Gaol survives the reality storm called Singularity.

Now you travel around with your employer and a handpicked crew to survey the four Reality Anchors. Hey, beats being tarred and feathered, right?

You are Rosa Montagni, goblin con artist, and on the way towards North (and remembering its dangers) you've gotten involved in a caper of some sort in Kyo-Edo that involved peacefully protesting kobolds (how strange), a flying machine man thief, and a sacred seed from a sacred tree. Now you've arrived at Crypt, which is in the general direction of the escaped flying thief - but you're here to meet up with Millie and Clyde as well.
Oh, and Craig seems to be engrossed in that grimoire you've bought him! Maybe he'll learn a new spell or two, eh?
>>
>>5880376
The gate of Crypt looms in front of your autowagon, dwarfing it in comparison. And yet, it too pales in comparison to the Grand Sarcophagus - the coffinlike megastructure that the necropolis of Crypt was built on.

Lightning Ling, your chartered driver, is currently being halted by a gatekeeper of sorts. Knowing Crypt, he's probably also a gravekeeper.

"Hold. What business do you have in Crypt? You do not look like mourners, nor are you dead."
The long-shovel he has is looking quite authoritarian.

Ling replies professionally.
"Well, we were supposed to meet up with two friends of ours to journey together - a mouse, and a horse."

The gatekeeper sighs.
"Mouse and horse? Haven't seen 'em yet on my shift. You're welcome to wait inside, as long as you stay respectful to the dead. Maybe ask the other gravekeeps, who knows?"
With that, he unwields the shovel and opens the gate.

Ling thanks the gatekeeper and the autowagon strolls in.
"Well boss, here we are - I think I can see a parking spot by the gravekeep quarters."

"Yeah, that's good, Ling. We'll wait and look around, while we're here."
Your mind whirls with several objectives, as the rest of the crew disembarks.
First, is the rendezvous with Millie and Clyde. We don't know if they're already here, or if they're on the way.
Second, try and track down that flying thief, someone here must've seen something.

"Interesting, so this is Crypt? I hear they have a chapel here."
Valencio stretched his arms and legs.
"Who knows, maybe the delightful duo could be waiting there already."

"On the off chance they haven't arrived yet, we could stay in the gravekeep quarters - it's close to the gate."
Nemo weighs in.

"Rosa, I thought I saw a goblin grove - maybe we could visit Nanna's tree?"
Craig chimes in. Good call, and there's also a chance that the flying machine man could be hiding in the grove. You can also reach the ceiling there, you think.

So, where do you go first?

Well, you haven't visited Nanna's tree for a long while now. Her being the grandma of grandpa Gobson makes you think, just how long has Gongalla been here?

"You're right, Craig, that's where Nanna's tree is. Come on, let's pay our respects first."
Craig nods solemnly - there's this side of him that goes serious when it comes to spirits and mystical stuff. Maybe he can see the spirits in the grove, if there are any.

A not-so-short walk later, and your crew enters the goblin grove.

"Woah, very tall trees!"
Apparently, Craig's solemnity can be eroded by the sheer awe these trees evoke.

"Excuse me, but this is quite a nice place for a last rest. How do you goblins get such magnificent trees to grow?"
Valencio mused, as you get closer to where Nanna's tree is.

"Heh, it's a long story, but you'll understand when you see Nanna's tree. Oh, speaking of which! Here we are."

Nanna's tree - her final resting place - is marked only by a modest altar where food offerings are to be placed, and a couple incense stick holders. It seems like Nanna's starting to get quite integrated.

"As you can see, Valencio, when us goblins die of old age, we grow into trees."
You say matter-of-factly.

"Interesting... even though death is quite strange in Gongalla?"
"Yeah, even so. Been like this, as long as I remember."
True, you've heard of revivals, of dead bodies coming alive again, of people with immortality, of ghosts and spirits. Death is quite a strange thing here, possibly because Gongalla's (supposedly) a universe where the detritus of worlds ended up.

Anyways, Craig's already sitting down in prayer, and saying hello to Nanna. As you sat down to pray with him, you notice the fresh, unlighted incense sticks. Huh, did one of the gravekeeps do this?

When you were about to conclude your prayers for Nanna, a metallic clang grabs your attention. It seems to be coming from deeper in the grove, where you swear you saw movement. And perhaps a glint of metal that seemed familiar, but it could be just you. The rest of the crew were also alerted. How should you proceed?

Something's strange, there shouldn't be any fauna in this area.

"Valencio, take point - Nemo, watch our backs. Craig, stay behind me."
You wield your gun, its familiar weight makes you feel more confident despite its lack of ammunition.

Without asking twice, your group fell into a formation - with you sticking right behind Valencio. Carefully, the four of you advance towards where the metal noise was heard - eyes and senses on high alert. A couple of tense, silent moments pass as you go deeper into the grove.

And then, there it is.

What you found was quite disturbing. You've found the flying machine man - the thief of Kyo-Edo you're trying to catch, or at least, parts of him. Strewn apart, with a circular scorch mark in the middle. It seems that his upper torso wasn't destroyed and he managed to crawl a bit - only to prop itself up on the roots of an ancestral tree.

Remarkably, it seems like the machine man is still alive and conscious - but that might change soon. Maybe you could get some answers from him before it's too late.

There's no time to dawdle on what questions you'll ask him - you can have all your answers when he's more alive than now. You rush to help, and kneel on his side.

"Hey, hang in there, we're here to help..."

The thief weakly sways his head in a tired version of a head-shake.
"This unit requires no assistance."
"What you witness is this unit's reward"
"Fair price for a job well done"
"Honorable death, long overdue"
Despite its emotionless faceplate, you'd swear he looks real recalcitrant right about now.

Then again, what he said makes sense - why else would he flee towards Crypt? He might want a hassle-free death. Quickly taken care of by the gravekeeps afterhe expires.

"Rosa, if you still wish to save him, I believe I can fix him. I've dealt with his kind in the past."
Valencio volunteered, in a rather chipper tone.

Meanwhile, you're briefly Craig Snorlisson, and three of your spirits are debating on whether or not you'll tell Rosa that you can hack the machine man.

"Why fix, when you can hax?? C'mon Craigy, I know you've been rearing to test that spell, you know, the new one!"
Trickster sounds giddy at the prospect of trying out one of the new spell you've learnt - Tulpa Double doesn't seem like it'd be useful right now, so that leaves Jackhammer.

"It is true, that new spell, Jackhammer, would make it quite easy to hack. Among other things."
Huh, rare to see Scholar agreeing with Trickster for once.

"Remember, Craig! Remember what Nemo warned you about! That spell might be dangerous!"
Magos does have a point. It could be very dangerous!

Before you can stammer out something, you are now Rosa Montagni again, and you have an idea. Well, more of a question for the thief.

"That's the thing, though... how can you be sure what you did was honorable?"
You say to the machine man, whose optics track your every word.

"This unit obeyed orders. This unit followed directives. This unit successfully finished tasks."
Stubborn, or deluded?

"I mean, you stole something, which could be considered honorless in several societies around here. Then, your reward is death - which sounds quite villainous, not to mention honorless of your client. And furthermore, they didn't care to finish you off for good. Isn't withholding payment also honorless?"

The machine man is silent - you begin to think he's given up the ghost when he spoke again.

"...This unit has been deceived."
You swear his monotone voice has a tinge of sadness in it.

"Can you tell us about this deceiving client of yours?"
And you reel it in, while he's on the hook.

"Acknowledged"
"In prior contacts, the deceiver mentioned 'serving the singularity'"
"After they thought they have dispatched me, they mentioned they are going North with the seed, to a place in the Pale Yonder"
"Now fix or terminate this unit, vengeance will be enacted - by this unit, or you"

Well, sounds like everything's pointing North, huh? And it seems that this machine man might have felt that his damage is too great, and is offloading his vengeance on you. Then again, maybe Valencio can work something out?

No sense to waste a perfectly good machine man, you guess.

"Well, Valencio - give it a try, then."

"Huzzah! I've been waiting a long time to use all these magi-circuit cards!"
He then set off to work immediately, gathering the blown-apart limbs and using the cards on them - first to detect the energy flows, then to join them together.

After some time, Valencio deemed the patch job good enough.

"I'm afraid your pelvis is totally demolished, but at least you can still move around using your wings and arms."

"..."
"Adequate."
"This unit suggests to not get in the way of my vengeance."

And with that, the thief jets off again, towards the North.

"What, not even a 'thank you'?"
Secretly you're glad that he didn't join you, that kind of vengeance-ful mindset really do not mesh well with con artists. Then you remembered, you were supposed to capture him for the folks in Kyo-Edo. Darnit.

But, good things come to those who wait, as Millie and Clyde's walking over to your location in the goblin grove. Seems like they've just arrived.

"Heey! Rosa! Craig! Valencio! Nemo! Are you ready to go North?"
Millie with her evergreen enthusiasm and positivity really lifts your spirits after that bummer of a machine man. Seems like Craig thinks so too, as you spy a smile from him as he saw Millie.

Right, then - time to get on with the rendezvous.

"Well, we still need to buy some stuff in Pinewatch. Say! You and Clyde look all set to go North, huh?"

Indeed, they are already garbed for the lower temperatures up North. Millie even does a twirl, showing off her new duds.

"Yep! The rest of our supplies is in Clyde's inventory, rest assured."

"So, why are you going North, Millie?"
You ask, probing a bit about her. Immediately, she puts on a serious face and answers.

"We've managed to get information from Father Jacquard in Ossuary, as well as evidence found in Patella Orphanage. Those crates of copied relics the kids were supposed to sell? They were seen in Pinewatch, headed northwards. Seems like there might be another singularity cult cell up there, somewhere."

She pauses a bit, looks at you, and continues.

"That cell might also be connected to the recent artifact and relic heists around here, which you should already encountered. This is disconcerting since it shows that the singularity cult could be bigger than we think. Not to mention there's an increase of anomalies reported all across Gongalla. Could be linked, could be not."

Huh, suddenly your task of anchor maintenance seem easier, compared to Millie and Clyde's. Seeing her being so serious, you think it might be time for something to soften her up - might as well, as she's standing real close to you now.

"Psst... I know this is unrelated to the convo before, but - what do you think of Craig?"
Playfully you ask, being careful that cousin of yours don't overhear.

Millie's serious aura dissipates as quickly as a blush forms on her cheeks.

"Well... he's really cute! And surprisingly brave... A-anyways! Surely you got more questions for me?"

You figured that you'll take up her offer, and ask about her mysterious companion.

"Alright then, tell me about Clyde - who is he? I'd ask him myself, but he's quite the man of few words."

Indeed, that hunk of a horse has caught your eye; you wonder who he is.

Millie smiles, in a way people do when they're trying to explain something to someone who doesn't quite grasp what they're saying.

"Um... it's kinda complicated... try to ask Nemo about 'Tulpas'. Clyde's a kind of special Tulpa, sorta - one that acts like a guard, a friend - and a reminder."

She says it with such sincerity, and yet you are struggling to believe it.

"A tulwhat, now?"

As you stand there befuddled, Millie motions everyone to start moving to Ling's Autowagon.

"As I said, ask Nemo about it. Although, I guess I am kinda one, too... a memory, of sorts."

"Wait, what?"

Confusion tag-teams you with befuddlement, as your brain tries to wrap around that statement.

"Anyways, let's get going! I think I can sit next to Craig, there seems to be enough room."

As you bundle and file away that gordian knot of questions from earlier, you came across a lesser one - where would Clyde sit? It would be quite cramped - but as things unfold, Clyde chose to take a seat on top of your packed supplies, right above and behind Lightning Ling.

As the Autowagon shudders to life and heads toward Pinewatch, you wonder how the talkative Ling would react to the quiet Clyde...

The journey towards Pinewatch went without any road distractions. That is, unless you count Millie inching closer towards Craig, a playful smile on her face.

"So, Craig! What do you think of Rosa? She's your... older cousin, am I right? Isn't she cool?"

You pick up what she's playing at, and sidle yourself closer to Craig as well.

"Yeah Craig, what do you think of me? Or maybe you'd like me to ask you what you think of Millie instead? Isn't she sweet?"

Poor boy is blushing fiercely green under the combined assault of teases. Nevermind his ear rubbing on Millie's, and the fact that your own braid is tickling his other ear...

"Uhh, s-stop it, you gals... You're both cool, and sweet!"

Daww, he's so cute when he's flustered like this. But, the Autowagon comes to a rolling stop, and Lightning Ling's voice can be heard over the rising crowdly ambience.

"We've arrived at Pinewatch! Last stop for the Lightning Ling express, unless you want to charter me some more, heh."

You step outside, and the piney fresh scent of the surrounding wilderness caught you off-guard, if for a bit.

"Thanks, Ling - you're so fast, there's still a lot of supplies left over!"

Indeed, only a small portion of edibles were consumed - as well as only half the Autowagon fuel. Ling is very effective, and could be an asset to consider.

"Yeah, well, that's not my problem now. If you need my further services, I'll be at the hotel until I get chartered again."

Ling, assisted by Clyde, starts to unload as Valencio stepped out.

"Well, that was a nice nap - we're at Pinewatch already?"

Nemo exited next, and responds to Valencio's idle inquiry.

"Yes, and it seems we're going to have to sell some of these excess supplies, or trade them for other things here. I think there's a general store around here?"

Millie and Craig descends next, with Craig going first and helping Millie, all gentlemanly-like.

"Me and Clyde are going to meet with an informant of ours first - we should be quick. We'll meet again at the hotel to discuss our next step."

Millie winks at Craig, whose cheek flare with green yet again.

Right, now you have all these extra supplies. You could help Valencio and Nemo carry them to the store... or you could stroll around, get info on the North around here. A town as big as Pinewatch tend to have non-kid-friendly places, which are sometimes also the best places to gather info.

"Craig, I'm gonna go gather some intel on the area, you follow Nemo, alright?"

"Okay! Mission received!"

Bless the little guy, he looks like he's having fun. Just hope they stay out of trouble.

Soon enough, you figured out the 'downtown' of Pinewatch - their hotel seems to also double as a meeting place and a food court. Interestingly, it is wholly separate from the bar - despite it being right next door. Furthermore, behind the hotel is the brothel - or rather, the 'burlesque theatre' as it calls itself. But based on the clientele that loiter around, you know it's definitely where the night life is.
Other than that, Pinewatch also has a general store, a gunsmith (best in the North - except for New Arcadia's), a doctor, a mortician (next door to the doctor), a guild hall where the various guilds gather, and an Autowagon all-in-one facility (store, sell, service, scrap).

Meanwhile, from the looks of it, the town has four major demographic groups. There's the clowns, which mostly work blue collar jobs; Goblins, who are less numerous but more evenly spread; some Tmavy Les, who seems to be upper-class; and an assortment of beastkin, like Millie, Clyde or that dick Jacquard.

As you stroll along the roads of Pinewatch, rumor sticks to your ears like lint. The lumbermen are concerned about some sort of ghost or spirit in the woods tampering with work. Strange lights seen in ceiling holes - and sometimes, flying below it and above the treeline - didn't the Goblinton folks also saw similar things? On a much lighter note, there's a rumor that a renowned stage actor is about to visit Pinewatch, one who is apparently a hit with the ladies.

All in all, not bad for an appetizer - but you can do better. Can you?

Ah, fair. That makes sense. Sad that not more people wanted BROTHEL ADVENTURES.
>>
>>5902454
It's time to get closer to the townsfolk, finding out more info that's not in the streets. The first place you check out is the brothel - usually, the girls (or sometimes, boys) here know a thing or two other folks don't.

But, instead, you're beset by a succubus floozy with a rack bigger than yours.

"Well hello sister! What brings you to this fine establishment today? Surely not looking to get employed, hmm?"

You know she's on the prowl by the way she's leaning closer to you.

"I'm looking for some info on rumors, like, what's up with the strange lights?"

She smiles, baring her fang.

"Oh sister, how about you and I take a tumble on the sheets together, and I'll tell you about those lights. What do you say, hmm?"

"Nope! Don't swing that way. Good day to you, 'sister'."

You beat a hasty exit - whatever info she got isn't worth the pleasure. Besides, you can kinda get a sly vibe from her - like a fellow con artist vibe. So nope!

Next place on your list is the bar, sometimes the rumors here hold some grain of truth. That's how you became the audience of an old clown lumberjack when you asked him about the ghost in the woods.

"I've done seen her, I did! The Lady of the Pines! Deep northwest of here. I was out prospectin' for some good lumber, when I got lost. Then I suddenly heard some strange thumping in the distance. It got closer, and louder, it shook my campfire out! I thought the Dammerlicht's gonna get me then, but then this giant glowing woman shoved the pines aside into my clearing! She said something in a language I didn't know to me - I just said 'I don't know who you are, lady, but if'n you not gonna smite me, then please let me go home.' I remember her eyes glowing so hard I hadta close mine! Next thing I knew, I was back near the border of the lumberyards. It was a miracle, I tells you!"

His story, despite him swearing that it's true, sounds like an exaggerated local folklore than an actual encounter. Still, there's a grain of truth there - there's indeed something in those pines.

"Thanks for the shot, and the story, old man."

"No problem! If you ever got lost in a Dammerlicht, know that the Lady of the Pines got your back!"

You down the rest of your shot and head towards the guild hall. Basically something between a business owner's lounge, a mayoral office (despite Pinewatch not having any mayors - just a council), a worker's union meeting place, and a place to find job vacancies and other matters of business.

You'd think you'll only find boring bureaucracy here - turns out, they have a kind of gig board. Hmm, they must've had adventurers in the past! What do they got here... missing kid notices, lumberyard seasonal jobs, requests for Autowagon parts and supplies, and oho! Even a wanted poster of Grins! Nice to see him still fine and dandy, at least.

"Excuse me, madam! Are you an adventurer, by any chance? If so, I may have a job for you, if you don't mind."

Huh, this guy looks rich. Would you listen?

Well, the old you would've fleeced him for his money's worth, but you're not exactly hurting for money right now. Perhaps he might know relevant information - such as where, exactly, the Northern reality anchor is.

"Depends on the job, and the pay."

"Ah, good! Name's Jed Stuart, and I need someone to investigate my lumberyard! Production's slowing down, and based on what the overseer told me, I suspect there may be attempts at sabotage."

"I think I can do that. Can you pay with information?"

Good, don't tell him what you're after yet - you can leverage more out of him later.

"I'm quite connected in this town - so if I don't have your info, I'll find someone who does. Oh! By the way, let me introduce you to the site overseer, Leon."

He points to the black-maned lion that he was talking to before.

"Yo."

"Alright, I'll accept your job, then."

"Excellent! I'm sure you'll need some preparation time, Leon here will stay at the guildhall until you're ready. He'll guide you to my lumberyards, ask him for the details on-site."

You nod and smile, feeling good that you finally got a potential valuable info. As you exit the guild hall, you almost jumped at the sight of Nemo, crossing his arms - you don't know if he's pissed or not with you taking a job outside your current one.

"So, how did it go?"

Nemo asks, his face as inscrutable as ever. Sweat start to form on your face as you gulp.

"Ehh, yeah, working on a lead, boss... hopefully we'll know where precisely the anchor is."

Nemo's mouth arched into a slight smile.

"Nice. I've booked two rooms at the hotel. Valencio's finishing up on selling the supplies."

He doesn't say anything bad about your deal, so you're safe, you guess? As you exhale your anxiety, you think of what to do next.

You've exhaled your anxiety, but another look at Nemo and a different kind of anxiety enters.

"Nemo, where's Craig?"

You swear you told that kid to follow Nemo. He also looked around, confusion - or what passes for it - can be seen on Nemo's face.

"What? He was with me a while ago..."

As you try to suppress the urge of panic, you are now Craig Snorlison - albeit, a few steps in time's past. You've received your orders from Rosa: follow Nemo! You intend to carry it out to your fullest extent. To that end, you inform Nemo, who is carrying sacks of supplies towards the general store.

"I'll follow you, Nemo!"

"Alright, then."

His short reply reassures you. As you follow him from the parking lot, you decide to take a look around while trailing him - Pinewatch is a nifty new place, with that minty piney smell in the air.

But then, among the sparse streets, you spot Millie and Clyde walking in the direction of... wait, didn't you see a sign when the Autowagon rolled in town... ah yes, towards the Pine Station, the train station! Didn't they say they're meeting an informant? Are they going to board a train? Or maybe the informant is going to arrive on one? What's going on??

Curiosity plagues your young mind, followed by indecisiveness! Surely Nemo will be at the general store later, right? And you can check out what Millie's doing for juuust a bit, right? It'll take no time at all! But, Rosa tasked you this mission, and you don't want to disappoint her! Oh, what to do, what to do?

You know what to do! Quickly, you summon Watchdog in your mind as you sneak off to tail Millie.

"Watchdog, can you follow Nemo? Spirit-talk to me when he's almost done unloading, please."

"Hrrrmh, I cannot guard you then - but okay."

As Watchdog speeds off invisibly, you see Millie and Clyde heading towards Pine Station - just as you guessed. Good thing you found these boxes somewhat across the street, you can hide here and case the station.

After a short while later, a train arrived from South - and... is that the tall, dark and scary bandit lady that stopped you and Rosa before?? Now Millie's talking to her like an old friend! Is she the informant?? You keep watching intently.

As confusion grips you, so does another lady you've never seen before. When she spoke, you can smell some kind of sweet smoke from her.

"Well, well... what's a cute lil' boy like you doing here? Come here, let big sister Sandra keep you company."

You turn around, and there's a demon girl standing there with the breastiest ever chest you've ever seen in your life. Something about her just makes you unable to look away - was it her sweet smoky smell? You wanted to make an excuse of checking out Millie, but your words fail you.

"Oh, are you lost, boy? Then, come along with me, big sis Sandra!"

As more uhhs and umms escape your lips, you find yourself being led away - and strangely, you feel a lack of resistance from yourself, despite remembering your dual mission of spying on Millie and following Nemo.

A while later, you find yourself inside a building, the events leading to this moment a great blur. What you understand, however, is that there's more women here - a tall boogie lady with multiple eyes and straight black hair, a goblin girl that's way older than you, and a human woman in glasses who wore her hair in a bun. The demon girl who led you here, Sandra, waves at them enthusiastically.

"Hey girls! I finally got a client!!"

The other girls look on in amusement, except for the bespectacled madam, who stomps towards Sandra with a mean look on her face.

"Sandra... did you even check him properly? Because you've brought a child. A. CHILD."

You get the feeling that this happens kinda often to the demon girl.

"So he's not a client?"

"NO. Heavens no. And is that some mana trace I - DID YOU JUST USE YOUR CHARM ON A CHILD?!"

"I thought he might just be a shorter than usual goblin, Angela! I swear!"

The goblin girl laughs in a shrill manner.
"Hahaha! That's sooo Sandra. That hookup failure earlier got to your mind or what?"

"Oh, that's different, Rita! I found him near the station..."

"I swear, Sandra, your shenanigans are shaving years off my lifespan. We don't need a scandal right now, especially with all the missing kids around here!"

"Ehh it's not that bad... we could just drop him off at the guild hall or something. Back me up here, Pamela!"

Sandra's pointing at the boogie lady, as Angela pinches the bridge of her nose and looking real stressed out.

It was at that moment you realize that whatever magic or ability Sandra wove on you had relinquished its grasp. You could even sneak off while they're busy quarreling! But where should you go, if at all?

Fair enough, it's only a suggestion. What about the "sit and discuss with Magos, Scholar, and Trickster"? Seems like upstairs would be a good place for you to hide - good thing that Angela's scolding Sandra extra hard that their attention is squarely aimed at the drama unfolding on the first floor. They didn't even see you walk up the stairs, which is good! You try to send a mind-voice to Watchdog about where you are, and then absent-mindedly opening the first door you see... huh, what does VIP mean?

As you close the door, you begin to realize there's a presence here in the room... three, actually. Oh hey is that the driver lady and OH MY GOB THEY'RE ALL NAKED! Well not quite naked they look like they've just taken a good comforting bath but THOSE CHESTS is just hitting your eyes like goblin puberty.

"Oh? Hello again, boy! Craig, was it? Aren't you a bit too young to be sneaking in here?"

The driver lady, Ling, calls out in a tone even more relaxed from when she's driving. Wait, is she with the other two ladies sitting on her lap? Is this what she does on her spare time?? Is this what is known as 'girl time'??? Is... this... blood, dripping out your nostrils? Is... is...

Overloaded by the lewdness of the situation, Craig's young mind decides that a fade to black is in order. Just... not how some would think would happen, that is.

What kind of surprise will Craig wake up to? Will Rosa find Craig in time to save his virginity? Is his virginity in danger at all? Find out next time in... Jail Quest!
