I'm Levelman of Chaos Quest coming at you. This year I have a special prompt for all you drawfren QMs out there to raise the festive spirits.

I'm putting together a QM collab to decorate 'this' tree with ornaments of your quest characters! Your job is to make a neat ornament of whoever you like so I can stick them on this pine. There's plenty of room so let's do our best to pack this tree down.

>Reply to this post with the product when finished.
>Aiming to fill the tree at least by Christmas Eve so take your time, there's no rush!

Yeah, top left and top right are from the Bananas quest (I played the top right in that). Middle and bottom left were from my space quest I ran earlier this year. Bottom right was the Anti-paladin MC of RQM's last quest done in the same style just for fun.

This is a rough draft of a title card for a quest I'm planning.
As you can see, it's quite messy from erasures and the visibility of the next page. I'm probably going to put it on a trace layer and draw over it, but I'm not super great at coloring. I also kinda like the shadiness to it, but black and white seems like it'd be a little boring, too.

A hooded figure (the titular Dream Master) grinning as he bears one hand channeling motes of Maho (magical energy associated with life) and another presenting a Dama (a manifestation of technique and purpose).
In an effort to make it look cool to any degree, I imposed the "Q" of the title to appear to be a halo, and I swear no allusions to Jesus or other such pretentiousness was intended in doing so.
I'm likely to either redo this and use it as a reference, or to make a different card entirely.

As a compromise between making a full drawing every time and using pre-existing pictures (or AI), I've considered using photographs or other references for backgrounds and minor side characters or objects with the main characters and focus of the quest still being drawn in order to give it that handmade feeling. I've only done this in one or two quests so far but it does seem like a useful time saving measure.

What do you think about it? Do you think it looks lazy- or does it look too chaotic and slapped together to be used as a Quest artstyle?

It can work, but you need to be specific about it. You can only use certain typed of background because otherwise the depth makes everything weird. If you want a reference on what a good real life background is, go look at The Amazing World of Gumball, who does exactly this.

I did something like this for a short one shot Quest. I just ran every image from generic fantasy websites through a paint or art style filter in an attempt to give them all a more unified theme, with some minor touch-ups here and there. Such as giving this guy the glowy eyes.

It did make Gathering art for this Quest much easier I will admit, but you don't get any kind of fine control and you obviously can't have a "real" drawquest doing it.

I've been working on a new concept for drawquests- taken from VNs; working with static pre-made backgrounds or likely characters in poses, and simply posing them with transparency in your completed images for the sake of faster and easier updating.

Obviously this isn't obviously a new thing- however I feel a certain degree of "authenticity" and ability to "tell the story" through images is lost by relying on this kind of style- the obvious benefit being the ease of updating once a Quest is running the more you set up in advance.

I've done this a few times before. I have more fun with fresh drawings for updates, but it definitely saves a lot of time and helps get posts out on a consistent basis. I have a tendency to lose steam with drawings around the 20 day mark of a thread, so being able to throw together an image easily can be helpful.

Honestly it started off as just repurposing canon reference material- and while the background is as such, the mood of the game itself was less serious and more goofing around. Like a dating sim spinoff of something you should probably treat as separate when it comes to what happens in it.

How do you feel about artstyle conveying the theme or tone of a work?

As for me, I've always felt my personal low-quality high saturation cartoonish artstyle was more fitting to a fantasy quest over the more gritty grim space-civilization stuff that I'm more known for. Do you think your artstyle fits your own Questing niche or favorite themes?

I'm running a "cultivator" quest. The protag is training in a beast-tamer sect and discovered an technique hidden in his training movement; the technique is called "Hawk's Double Talon". Protag can activate it on a hit for a bit of Qi to instantly score an insanely fast second hit.

If I could draw a Nyeuu, I would. That boi was a top tier husbando. A very well-written character and a total bro even though anons didn't take the romance route with him. He's been an inspiration in how I write supporting characters who have romantic interest in the MC but aren't chosen. Also, his outfit was just super well-designed.

Nyeuu had to be pretty much a perfect companion since he already came with a very heavy set of baggage. 1: He was a religious priest and 2: He was a gay boy. Its not that the majority of /qst/ hate these things, but the people who do hate religion and being a gayboy REALLY hate it. Basically, for a character to be liked in a quest they have to be useful to the MC in some way. The coolest character ever vs a bad character who gives the MC a dagger or something will be 100x more liked then the former. So the way I went about dealing with the character is to constantly provide the MC with something useful. Cooking him dinner, kissin him on the noggin, giving him gifts, etc.

I always worried that I made the character a bit too cringe, so i'm happy you liked him.

I thought his being a little haughty and moralizing was a nice way to stop him from being 'too perfect', as well as his bad habit of binge-drinking when stressed. I thought the noggin-kiss was cute, but anyway who gets viscerally-mad at homosexuality (like the infamous Hostile Anon) was never going to see that as "something useful" so much as another reason to REEEE. He remains probably one of the most memorable characters on /qst/ for me, though.
