Welcome back.

Rules are simple: Votes are tallied every hour, with whatever course of action being the most popular being the course of action taken. Write ins are encouraged and non-mutually exclusive votes will be combined if possible.

When a roll is called for, roll however many D100 are specified. 5- is a 'crit fail' and generally means something bad is about to happen. 95+ is a 'crit success' and generally means something good just happened. a 'crit success' trumps a crit fail. User input on both will be taken into consideration.

For a short summary for the new and to recap:

You are Alex. A newly minted trainer and camping enthusiast just starting out on your journey at the age of seventeen after your father lost his job in order to help pay the bills. On the road, you met Fie, the Fire Gym Leader, Gareth a novice Aura Guardian on pilgrimage and Holly, a runaway heiress using a pseudonym. You've also made enemies of Team Green a group of violent, radical activists looking to abolish pokemon training.

Last time, you finished your battle with Emma, met Fie's dad, had an altercation with Fie's dad, left Saltcoast Gym and decided to head back to Silveridge Town to catch up with Jean, Martha, Katherine and Judy.

"How about the two of you go out to dinner?" You suggest.

"Well... maybe?" Gareth says weakly.

"Oh, come on." You say cajolingly.

"I'll think about it." He replies.

You nod, satisfied as you watch Blitz and Fluffy getting into the swing of a game of tag, Fluffy quickly catching on to Blitz's use of Quick Attack and Agility to augment his speed and it quickly becomes a fairly even game.

"Excited to see the others again?" You ask Holly.

"Yeah... maybe not Judy as much, but the others, yeah." She replies.

"She a bit much for you?" You guess.

"A bit." Holly agreed with a grimace.

"Maybe try turning it around on her." You suggest. "See if she can take it as well as she can dish it out."

"If she can, I'm blaming you." Holly warns.

You chuckle as you focus on walking as you talk about nothing in particular as the afternoon wears on until it gets to the point you start thinking about camp.

You start keeping an eye out for a place to stop and before long, you find a good spot a little ways off the track in a small clearing.

A bit of clearing of deadwood later and clearing leaf litter and you've got a fairly tidy little campsite going.

You're just starting on the firepit when Holly gasps.

You look around to see what's got her attention and you're presented with the site of an Altaria coming in to land in a nearby tree, accompanied by dozens of Swablu.

In short order, the surrounding trees are more cotton white than anything else.

"Oh, cool." You say, grinning with delight.

You've never, ever had trouble with Altaria or Swablu. They're probably the least aggressive pokemon you've ever encountered and a pleasure to have around a campsite, between their singing, general cleanliness and the propensity of Altaria to deter most other pokemon from causing trouble.

You've still got fond memories of sheltering in a hollow tree with an Altaria and its chicks when you wandered off one time.

"I've never seen so many in one place." Gareth said, awed.

"They mostly do this during winter." You explain. "It's a good indication it's going to be really, really cold tonight."

"Well, damn." Gareth says. "...Hm. Mind putting us up in your tent?" He asks, indicating himself and Holly.

It's the work of a moment for Gareth and Holly to unpack their sleeping bags in your tent while you get the fire set.

That taken care of, you look around to see Blitz and Fluffy sleeping under a tree, evidently having worn themselves out running around previously.

Looking around, you see that Fluffy and Blitz are both dozing, having apparently worn themselves out.

It's a little early to be putting dinner on just yet, so you release Sage and after giving her one of the Everstones you brought, you settle down and continue with trying to teach her to read.

She's got most of the letters down pat now, so you start with basic words next, sounding them out for her.

It's slow going and you wonder absently if this is how Meowth learned to talk this way and whether Sage will develop the knack.

Either way, she won't be waxing lyrical or making snappy one liners tonight.

She makes a little progress, but like with most skills this is something that's a steady grind, rather than something you can pick up in an afternoon.

When you let her go to wander the camp and settle down with the others you look at your watch and decide it's time for putting dinner on. You've got some coals to work with now.

After you've set a pot of stew cooking, you're once again left with time to burn.

With time to kill, you decide to settle in and meditate.

You find that zen state quickly and breathe easily as you take in the auras of the others and the forest around you.

Everyone's calm, a little tired and looking forward to the journey now you're on the road again.

It fills you with a sense of contentment yourself.

You're jerked out of your trance however, by the smell of smoke and come to to find that while you were meditating - no more than fifteen minutes - the stew has stuck to the pot and burned.

"Shit." You swear as you try and salvage what you can.

You've only got the one pot, so the question now is what to do?

You sigh tiredly and carefully go scrape the pot for the Swablu and Altaria before asking Holly for some water so you can scrape the pot.

It takes some doing to get the burned food on the bottom of the pot out, but when it's done, you start over.

"At least we'll be in Silveridge tomorrow." Gareth offers as he sits down beside you. "How'd meditating work out this time?" He asks.

"It was going alright, until I burned dinner." You reply.

"Things happen." Gareth notes. "Next time, say something and I'll watch dinner."

"I'll do that." You assure.

Soon enough, you've got dinner set again and you can sit back and watch the Swablu eat.

They seem to be enjoying the stew well enough, the Altaria waiting their turn until their pre-evolved counterparts have eaten their fill before descending to finish up.

Inside of ten minutes, the only sign that there was food there not long ago is a wet patch on the soil where some of the sauce seeped in.

At least the food didn't go to waste.

You resolve to watch the pot more closely this time, but it still leaves you time to do something else.

You decide to get to know the Dratini you caught back at Lake Clarity and named Ayumi.

You release her and almost immediately have the breath crushed out of you as she wraps herself around your torso with a mewl somewhere between playful and excited.

You're briefly reminded of your dad mentioning a lot of his pokemon are like this with him.

"...Down..." You wheeze at length and gasp as she uncoils herself - all two metres of her - and coils in front of her.

Up close, you can see she's about as thick around as your forearm. Her hide looks a little dull and loose though.

This you recognise, though - she's shedding as a result of her Ability.

You've helped your mother with shedding serpent pokemon more than once, so it's no real trouble to start the process off for her so she can slither on out of her skin, before you crack open the grooming kit and work on oiling her presently soft hide to help her next layer stay supple for her next shedding and so her hide lasts longer until she needs to shed again.

"Wow, that was fast." Holly says, coming over as you give the stew a stir.

"I've had plenty of practice helping mum with her Seviper." You explain modestly as you give Ayumi a rub down.

She seems perfectly happy to bask in the attention, which you're glad for. Your mother's Seviper tends to be a bit more of a handful and an energetic Dratini sounds kind of nightmarish to you. Especially after Ayumi's hug on being released.

"Wasn't that dangerous?" Holly asks.

"Arceus... What other pokemon do your parents have?" Holly asks.

"Weezing, Arbok, Wobbuffet, Toxapex, Bewear, Mimikyu, Gourgheist, Malamar... Hm..." You trail off. "You know, it could be I've got a very skewed idea of what 'dangerous' is." You admit.

Ranger training also involved using Stylers a kind of specialized taming tool that utilizes some sort of energy projection to make wild pokemon cooperative.
Now that i think about it that might have been some sort of aura based tool.
Had my share of working with wild pokemon since then.
The Styler training starts at 14 so i have 3 years of experience in that regard.
I have left my pair of Tonfa-Stylers back home for my siblings to practice with, might be worthwhile to purchase a new pair for my self again later on given how much easier off road experiences can be with these.

To clarify:

'Junior Rangers' is basically the Scouts.

What you're describing would be more like the Ranger School in the beginning of Shadows of Almia.
>>
>>5863966
Scouts sound pretty useless without pokemon or stylers tho. Literally no better than a survival class.
Any you did say Alex was a patrol leader... Meaning proper ranger work.
A junior ranger is basically any kid who went through the "ranger trade school" program aside from regular school.
Shadows of Alma and the title with the Fiore region basically state that the Rangers Union rules both countries and you play a graduate student in both.
Given how practical stylers are tho i believe most countries world wide would have adopted their own version. i.e. In Kanto due to high number of cases of people being assaulted with Swords their stylers are shaped like Swordbreakers and heavily utilized by all league servicemen (police, rangers, military, gym leaders).

"What?" You ask, thrown by Gareth's reaction.

"Ugh. It's nothing really." Gareth says. "There's just no love lost between the Guardians and the Rangers." He explains. "They see us as clueless hippies who don't know what they're on about, while they don't have the first clue about what they're doing half the time."

"Huh. I'd have thought they'd be ecstatic about there being another group dedicated to protecting Arnet." You note.

"Nope. They just see us as getting in their way." Gareth says, before shrugging. "I mean, we do on occasion, but that's more when they're getting too close to angering some slumbering ancient pokemon or bringing a horde down on a town or city."

"...Does this happen often?" You ask, disquieted.

"Too often for comfort." Gareth replies.

"Huh." You pause. "Well, dinner's just about done." You say, indicating a pot before you start dishing up.

The extra effort was worth it - the food is hot and doesn't taste overwhelmingly of smoke and charcoal, warming you up nicely from the inside.

It's still relatively early, when you look at your watch.

You wash up, pondering meanwhile what to do before bed.

You're soon settled in your sleeping bag and seeing you have some reception for once, start browsing on the internet, quickly focusing in on practical matters.

Namely, the portable box interface you'd heard was being rolled out in Galar and Paldea.

>Roll.
>>
>>5872685

Real talk:

No idea how to handle this.

On the one hand - yeah, this would be a life-saver in Arnet.

On the other hand, I really feel there should be some sort of caveat to always having a PC on hand.

Reception black spots, or a subscription fee or something.

>Reception black spots, or a subscription fee or something.

I think it is a specialty item "Portable teleporter" that always has reception but the item is expensive (like 5k or 10k).
That should balance it nicely.
>>
>>5872700
>>5872788
>>5872864

As it so happens, the technology is being rolled out in Arnet as well, but there're teething issues with it - black spots being a major one.

Apparently it works fine along the major routes, but in more remote locales, the reception is patchy.

The portable teleporter itself is still expensive here as well, with providers charging a fee per use in addition to a steep up-front price for the teleporter unit itself.

The cheapest one you can find is ten thousand credits for the initial purchase and then a hundred for every switch.

The shops selling the units are only located in the major towns as well, to your annoyance, so you're not going to be finding a store in Silveridge Town.

After about an hour's reading, you stow your pokedex and drift off.

You try not to think about it.

You really do.

But before long, the room desolves to be replaced by an ass.

And not an attractive one.

You wake up with a start, sitting up in the darkness as you hear Holly do likewise.

It's cold, even with the three of you in your tent, but that's kind of welcome right now and helps you scrub the hideous mental image from your mind.

Gareth, predictably, is still sound asleep and a quick look at your phone shows that it's the middle of the knight.

You're thirsty and you're not sure how long it'll take you to get back to sleep after that and you can hear Holly shifting on her side of the tent.

You haul yourself out of your sleeping bag and quietly head for the door.

"Drink?" You ask Holly quietly.

She nods and you head out of the tent to the banked fire and start stoking it.

It's icy, but the promise of a hot drink and the heat of the fire as it gets going again damps it somewhat.

Holly joins you shortly as you set some water to heat, perching on the log in her pajamas and looking at the fire reflectively.

"What?" You ask.

"Just thinking." She replies. "I know you're probably getting sick of the 'woe is me' reflections on the fact I've got a rich control freak for a father, but I really never thought I'd ever get to go on a journey like this." She explains. "And it's been more fun than I ever could've imagined, even when things haven't gone according to plan."

You have to chuckle at that.

"We're just getting started." You say seriously. "We've got more lakes, mountains, caves and the world's biggest desert to go before this journey is over." You say as you pour water for tea.

It's just the thing to settle your jangled nerves and fight back the cold.

"I'm not getting sick of anything, by the way." You add. "You're my friend. That means sticking with you, thick or thin."

Holly gives you a smile.

You're tempted to reassure her about her father, but it sounds hollow, even inside your head.

A rich prick like that is going to be more or less immune to the consequences of his actions where Holly is concerned. More's the pity.

You finish up your drinks and turn in again.

Thankfully, there're no more dreams of asses, of any variety.

Your alarm wakes you at the usual time and somehow, despite the midnight wake up, you don't feel too bad.

If the battle with Emma taught you anything, it's that you need to train more.

That in mind, you set about teaching Blitz Thunder Fang, since that seems like a good start.

It goes pretty well, as it happens - He already knows Fire Fang, so he has the base concept down and it's not too long before his teeth are crackling with electricity as he bites.

After you're happy he can do it consistently, you set him to running laps of the camp while you coach Sage on Thunder Wave.

This doesn't go as well.

She manages to produce some sparks with her stick a few times, but by the time the smell of breakfast has lured Holly and Gareth out of bed, that's about all the progress she's made.

It's a start, at least.

You eat quickly after that, before you tear down camp and hit the road again.

You're going down hill this time, so you're fairly sure if you hurry, you can make Silveridge by lunchtime.

There's always time for a battle.

You see a few people up and about this morning, headed for Saltcoast City, but most are either veterans or green kids whom you'd just feel like a bully battling.

It's getting on around mid morning before you see two boys and a girl around your age coming up the pack.

The boys have butterfly nets and are chatting animatedly about the latest round of an international Bug Catching contest, while the girl looks... distant.

"Hey, how many badges have you guys got?" One of the boys call as they spot you.

"Two. How about you?" You reply.

"Sounds like a plan." The first boy says. "We doing doubles or back to back battles?" He asks.

"Agility again, around the edge of the cloud, whip up that smoke!" You order as Centiskorch belches a cloud of thick black smoke onto the field.

You don't see what happens, but you do hear a pained yip from Fluffy, which you genuinely don't want to be hearing so soon after he recovered from the broken ribs, for many different reasons.

His aura is still in the green from what you can tell, but you think Fluffy might've twisted an ankle.

You've got no way to tell how badly right now though, due to the smoke.

"Time out! Time out!" You call.

"What, just cus you're losing." The boy taunts before the girl and Gareth call a halt.

The boy grumbles, but calls his Centiskorch back before it bodies Fluffy, much to his annoyance.

When the smoke clears, you can see Eevee favouring his left forefoot, but a cursory examination confirms that he's just sprained it. Nothing a potion and a little rest won't fix.

"Right so... It'll be better if Fluffy doesn't continue to battle." You say slowly. "But I'm not about to just concede this." You add. "So, free shot on a switch?" You offer.

The boy sighs dramatically.

"Fine. Pussy." He agrees.

This kid's attitude is urking you, but you'll take a fourteen year old's poor sportsmanship over an injury.

The only question is who to swap in to take Fluffy's place.

You could be a dick right back and send in Latias or Rascal, but you're fully aware you'll look like a cheating asshole if you do that.

Not that the kid doesn't deserve it with that attitude, but that's beside the point.
