The ship docked early in the morning, it had been carried east thanks to a sudden rise in the wind, despite that. The man abroad was not not happy.

He sat inside, huddled up in a corner where he had covered himself in nearly every piece of clothing he had with him.

‘’How I wish I was back in Castana again.’’ He thought as the captain informed him that he had reached his destination. Indeed, the cold gloomy north was no place for this man to be. A land of coldness, dourness and beer. No, he much rather preferred the warm vineyards of his homeland, so far away. But the pontiff had sent him on a mission, and he was going to finish it.

He stood up, put on a thick coat and walked to the door leading to the deck of the cog. The cold assaulted the part of his head that he had left exposed to the elements, but that mattered little now. ’’So this is Libau. The largest city in this land.’’

’’It matters not, I have to go to the archiepiscopal palace immediately. The situation is worsening with each step the heathens take.’’
>>
>>5849153
About six hours later. About a day’s ride away from Libau, at Rittersbach. Anno 1253

’’He is young, far too young. You thought as he approached.

’’But it is true, he has most certainly earned it. I suppose that it was only logical that he did, especially considering who he served.

The fifteen year old now knelt before you, dressed in the same type of surcoat that you wore when in armour. His former master stood a few metres to your left. Giving out a subtle glimpse of pride.

Pride, yes the pride of a master when he sees that his favoured apprentice produced a flawless masterwork. Within your own heart however, beams a different kind of pride. The pride of a father.

What was the deed that earned your son his knighthood?

Perhaps it was Ehrenfrieds idea. Perhaps his wild side had not been suppressed as much as you thought. But the tale went something along the lines of Ehrenfried taking Albrecht out to a tournament a few days' ride away, only for the situation to turn completely on its head. Having won the squires tournament. Albrecht decided to use his impressive stature to bluff his way into the tournament meant for knights. To even the surprise of Ehrenfried he managed to secure the first place.

Once the truth of the matter came out. He of course, couldn't really be punished by the holder of the tournament, so he just gave him a warning and a prize and then made a joke that he should be knighted for trashing more experienced knights. Ehrenfried was obviously within hearing distance when he said that.

So here you are about to give your own son his knighthood. You keep your grand uncle's old mithril sword pointed down.

‘’Albrecht von Adlershorst, Thou is said to possess the skills and values of a true knight. As it is within my power to do so. Does thou swear to protect the weak, uphold the law, obey thou liege lord and to be above all valourous. Both in peace and war?’’ You said

’’That I shall, my liege. Upon my word of honour I do swear as such.’’ Your son answered.

’’Then you have truly earned your spurs.’’ You said as you knighted him with a touch on his left shoulder and his right shoulder. ’’Arise then, and be among the worthy. Many came, few were chosen, fewer still passed.’’ You said as you returned your sword to its scabbard.

You looked up to your son, he was already a head taller than you, and he wasn’t even a legal adult yet.

Yet you could already see what kind of man he would become.

Basically someone who is gifted but thinks they are always right and has a fixed, idealized version of the world and won't hear otherwise.

There are many qualities which your son possesses. For a starter he has a scholarly deposition that he combines with his bravery. Making him a warrior-scholar. He erudite when he is inside and when he isnt training or on official business one can find him in the library, which has expanded considerably thanks to him using his allowance to buy in more and more books. Which he enjoys reading in his free time.

That is not to say he doesn’t enjoy a good fight or two, with a near death defying attitude. You have seen him climb into trees from a young age and he has already done things like jumping into haystacks from the castle wall just to win a bet.

But alas, they can’t all be perfect. And your son has quite the temper, with his face being capable of turning from normal to deathly pale within a few seconds. Sometimes he will just glare at people who offended him with an uncharacteristic silence, and sometimes he goes on a tirade filled with insults and threats. Though he does know when to hold it in which he does with a great deal of willpower. This, combined with his stubborn nature make him perhaps the worst person at court as far as the servants are concerned.

That is not to say that his stubborn nature always gets in his way, once he sets out to do something, he'll see it through to the end. Never hesitating, never giving up. It probably explains his erudition and early knighting.

Aside from all that on a good day your son is normally of a gentle and jolly nature, showing compassion to those who need it. Being on good terms with nearly all children and animals at court. It also means that he usually apologises after he calmed down if he believed he went too far.

Albrecht is strong by nature, being capable of bending a silver Greif coin double with his thumb and index finger. Something he likes to demonstrate at feasts for fun. This has also translated itself into his combat style. With him using his strength to put enough force into his blow and thrusts to give him an edge in combat. It makes him predisposed to two-handed weapons while on foot while on horse he is capable of carrying much heavier lances than normal.

His favoured steed is a white stallion named Wittekind, a ferocious and normally unruly beast. Only he can ride the beast, everyone else. Including yourself is usually thrown off or kept away by the threat of kicks and bites. But at least the horse does let people lead him and care for him. But only Albrecht may ride him, probably because he is the only one who can keep the reins tight.

’’Now,then let us withdraw from the chapel and make for the feast hall. We shall now celebrate and break bread after the night of vigil’’

’’Well, my boy, you did it. At fifteen years no less, you have already done something that would take most men their youths to complete. I can only hope to see to what heights fate will carry you.’’ You thought.

The next day however you received a most curious guest. A Pontifical nuncio, a representative of the Pontiff in Portemossa himself.

’’I have spoken to the archbishop of Libau, he referred me to you as the local sovereign. I bring news and a missive from Portemossa. The situation is grim as you will certainly understand.’’

’’Well, your eminence. I am not certain I follow. Has something happened? Have the infidels set foot in Castana or something?’’ You asked him, not being entirely sure of his reasons for being here.

’’Read the missive, it shall make things clear enough.’’ The clerical diplomat said.

And so you did, yet in the first few lines it became clear what had happened. The eastern bulwark. Mithras had failed miserably. Not only had the infidels successfully crushed the Mithradian expedition. But they had also captured their Emperor and the transport fleet. And had landed on the Mithradian homeland.

’’I don’t understand, how in the world such a thing happens. Are the Mithradians not the greatest power in the region?’’ You asked

Years and years of neglect. Their empire has been ruled by a string of neglectful and incompetent emperors. The previous one lost the actual war fleet against the Castanans a few years ago. Now power lies with the Emperor Anastasius V, the former finance minister and brother-in-law of the now imprisoned George III. He has made the decision to petition the west for aid against the infidel.’ The nuncio explained

’’And that request has been granted. A new crusade, in Mithras no less. I take it I am not the only one who will receive a nuncio am I?’’

’’Of course not.’’ The nuncio said with a snort.

’’ I can’t come personally. Matters in Greifswald are not settled. I am merely the first in what I hope shall be a long line. Yet my son is eager and willing, he has the wanderlust in him. I shall send him in my stead.’’ You had decided. The boy was eager to see the world and this was a great opportunity to give it to him.

(POV shift you are Albrecht von Adlershorst, heir to the duchy of Greifswald.)

A crusade? The very prospect brings images of heroic crusaders fighting against their foes, while exploring unknown lands. Perhaps it was a bit strange for you to go as a fifteen year old. Yet by the time you arrive you will probably be sixteen.

What do you make of this?

>[Erudite] This is great! I will have the opportunity to learn and see so much. I can’t wait to see the ruins in Mithras.

>[Erudite] This is great! I will have the opportunity to learn and see so much. I can’t wait to see the ruins in Mithras.

Indeed, the scholar within you nearly jumps at the opportunity. Mithras is known to be the oldest continuous state on the continent. Renowned for its philosophers and high culture. You had read in the books that the Mithradians did not work with a feudal system, but instead used a bureaucracy of professional officials to govern, they also have a permanent professional army and navy. Unlike the rest of Argalis where the armed forces are merely the retainers of feudal lords.

It is said that the archipelago of Mithras is full of ancient ruins, of cities, forts, towers, temples and much much more. It is a land of ancient history, dating back to the Isidorian and even further back to the man who gave the place its name. The legendary King Mithridates.

But you realise that you need to get there first. And that you must raise a force to participate in the crusade. Father has already assured you that he will arrange for the necessities. With crusade only volunteers may join, and they need not get pay, as the holy duty is enough in compensation. Which makes it easier for you to save money to buy supplies if the need arises.

The army would, of course, need to be assembled first before it could set out. The nuncio had told you that the start of the crusade would be in the harvesting season next year. Which gave you time to march down south. It is currently winter but thankfully your army would not consist of peasants who needed to return for planting and seeding which gives you freedom of movement.

’’If you set out now, in a southwestern direction to Tautenland. you will reach the mountain passes into Castana just in time for them to melt. Alternatively, you could take the route south, through Mozolavia, Lolegel and Orsteskia. The choice is entirely yours of course’’ Father told you

Every day now the volunteers gather. Their tent camp is growing bigger and bigger. You, in the meantime, studied the maps of the world. If you went south through the three kingdoms father mentioned you would reach the coast in time for the end of spring. Though you would need suitable transportation to ferry you to mithras.

If you went west on the other hand you could reach Castana by the middle of the summer, and hiring a few boats to bring you there would be easily in the commercial centre of the world. Father had said that he would give you a few cheques to cash in on with a bank over there so you could hire enough ships.

In the end you decided upon the….

While there are mountains and we would first need to pass by the Order State (the one our father defeated in lawful rebellion), the opportunity in passing by the lands of the empire of our folk and then the rich cities of Castana, is a good one. Beside our sister, we would likely have the occasion of seeing our family too. Men from Tauten are likely to join, same for Castania.

At the same time though... Mozolavia has been a great neighbour and ally for our father. Passing by could be a good move diplomatically, and the King would no doubt approve. His sons and nephews could even join with us, for men its an interrogative. Its not impossible, they are still of our faith.
Both choices could be quite interesting.
>>
I should probably clarify that you can still change direction as you move along.

’’We shall take the western route. Through Tautenland.’’ The land of your father, a land where most of the nobility here had their origins. There was much to do there, aside from visiting your sister you could visit the ancestral castle of the Adlershorsts or even the Kaiserpfalz the residence of the Emperor in times of peace. Come to think of it, the journey would be just as educational as the destination.

Joining you on this crusade were a few familiar people. Erhenfried had also decided to join, mostly for the adventure. Some of your childhood friends from court had also decided to take up the sword. Some like would do as your personal bodyguards, while you had others put in charge of the administrative burden of the logistics.

It was early in the winter morning when you had your horse made ready in the courtyard. You had already given the order to break up the tent camp for the ordinary soldier earlier and now they stood ready in column. Your father, mother and sister, stand by to give you your farewells.

You bad farewell to your father first

’’I must go now father, I must fulfil my sacred duty. I hope to return as soon as I have fulfilled that duty’’ You said in a deferential tone.

’’You shall make us proud, that I know. If you do pass through Tautenland visit my own father and your sister for me would you?’’

’’I shall do as such, if time permits’’’ You answered

’’Then I have one more thing to give to you.’’ He then brought forth a sword. You knew exactly what he intended to give you.

’’This is Silberkralle, your great-grand uncle’s old sword from his own crusading days. You will have more use out of it than I will have I believe’’

Gained: Silberkralle. Mithril sword. +15DC if equipped.

’’Thank you father, I shall strive to be worthy of such a blade

You then turned to mother. Whose normal courtly stoicism nearly cracked.
’’Stay safe, Albrecht, my little boy.’’ Despite this you already towered over her.

’’I will mother, I will’’ You assured her.

And finally you turned to your little sister.

’’Take something from there with you, would you? She said, odd. Normally, there would be at least a snide remark or a barb in there.

’’I shall, but I would have find something appropriate first’’ You replied.

Your horse awaited you with an impatient look. It wanted to get on with it already. You rode to the head of the column where the senior members of the army awaited you.

’’As long as we are crusading we have the right of free passage throughout the Curian world. That means no-one is allowed to block our path, or to collect a toll on us by Pontifical dispensation. Any who breach it would come under threat of excommunication.’’ The chaplain and almoner of the army explained to you.

’’Most excellent, let us get moving then. Gert, give signal to the army moving.’’ And with a short blow on the horn like a slug the army slowly gets moving.

Your father's infrastructure projects over the years help you in this matter. The roads are wide and properly maintained, in wetter places they are made out of stone, in places that can do without them with dirt. You will have to move east first to a place where the Seldau narrows enough for there to be a bridge across it. You wouldn’t ford at this time of the year anyway and attempting to cross the frozen river would be suicide.

At about eleven o’clock in the morning you passed through the charming little village of Zweiteilt. The local inhabitants, with nothing better to do, in the winter had come out to see the army pass through. You halted near the centre of the village to confer over the next step.

’’The road here split in two afterwards. We go to the coast from here and pass through the orderstate to Tautenland. Most likely entering in Lummeren. If we go southwest through Mozolavia we would enter a bit more south. Most likely in Fluddenmark or Tsöchen. But the choice is yours’’

Your father had gained his position by rebelling against the old order, and apparently your great-grand uncle had a long standing feud with the old leadership. Although they probably don’t hold a grudge against you. You decided that it would be for the better to go into Mozolavia instead.

‘’I do not trust the orderstate any more than my father does, they may be fellow Tautens but I would rather go through Mozolavia’’ You told the man. Let us move, the roads here are good enough that we will be able to reach the border by the end of the day’’

And so on you and the army went. Much slower than you had hoped due to a short snowfall but time was recovered by taking a new shorter road. You halted at midday to eat lunch and to do other necessities before moving on.

The reflection of the sunlight by the sun made it difficult for you to see things at times though the clouds helped by partially blocking off the sunrays.

As you were moving around a bend in the road. Which thanks to the woodland on both sides made it difficult to see through, even with most of the leaves gone. Yet you could make out the smoke in the air. And it wasn’t the good type. It is far too black for that.

And as you laid eyes upon what was behind the bend it became clear what it is. A burning homestead, presently being plundered by a bend of bandits. They seem to have already put the barn on fire, while having the cattle lead out of the stables. This won’t stand, especially on your fathers land. Justice and punishment would have to be served.

But how?.

’’Come on you men! if we are to take on the Saracen's then we can surely take a few low-lifes!’’ You shouted as your spurs kicked Wittekind into action. A takes but a mere second for you to be joined by your fellow equestrians, knight and noble alike.

The horses' hooves crunched in the snow as you made your advance. The ground was still hard, so there was less change for your horses to slip.

The bandits on the other hand, have already given up. They are outnumbered by people with better armour, better weapons and horses. The battle as far they are concerned, is already over. But that doesn’t mean that they would all live.

As you put Wittekind to a halt in the farmyard you see a few knights and horsemen chase some bandits down with their lances. It is less combat and more hunting. As one by one they are cut down.

But that doesn’t mean that they have all fled. Perhaps there are still a few within the farmhouse or stables. They had already brought the cattle out of their winter quarters, perhaps to sell them, or maybe to slaughter them for a winter meal. But there also is another question. Where are the original inhabitants of this farm? Are they dead, held for ransom? Or maybe they simply fled?

At any rate, perhaps you should investigate

And you went in through the front door. The place itself is wrecked. The furniture lies broken across the floor and various items, like pots and pans lie scattered over the floor.

Obviously the brigants must have turned this place upside down for anything valuable. If there was something of value it was probably already taken. Even a look into the pantry provided no clue.

Taking the stairs up to the bedchambers, you hope that you can at least find something. And while taking a look around you found it. There was a bed, but unlike most peasant beds this one wasn’t made out of straw. Whoever lived here did quite well for themselves.

Wait, you hear something. The creaking of the plank boards alarms you beforehand. You quickly take Silberkralle out of its scabbard. And there you have it, one of the bandits. He probably hoped to ambush you. If the frustrated look on his face is any hint.

Thinking quickly you took a stance:
>Cautious - Double AV (Max 80), Total unsaved damage to Foe is halved (Rounding up)
>Guarded - Exchange of Blows does not inflict or sustain damage.
>Balanced - AV and Damage remain unchanged.

You best keep a balanced stance for this. There is no telling what is leech on society would do. Will he stand? Will he surrender? Or perhaps he would jump from a window.

You hold your sword in a balanced position. Taking care not to be too aggressive or defensive.

Yet your opponent does not seem to eager to give up. He lungs forward, with a guttural growl. Attempting to plunge his rusty dagger into your neck. Yet he is slow in his step and your reaction is quicker.

You step aside, allowing his dagger to bypass you as he attempts to come to a halt, you take advantage of the situation to put the pummel of Silberkralle into the rear of his head. And with a great force you do.

A painful yelp is all the response you get before the bandit recomposes himself. He's a though one it seems.

>The brigand is SLAIN.

It is was mistake to allow that worthless wretch the initiative, you would move the pace of the combat. Not Him. It is time for you to put an end to this worthless man's live.

You step forward, you put your sword into a thrusting position. And you lunge forward with great force.

The sword tip plunges itself deep into the man's chest. From the sound of it right through not only one of his lungs but also his ribcage. Even if he isn't dead now it won't take long.

And just as you would have as soon you turn your head to look at the man he is already coughing up blood. You wring Silberkralle loose from the man's chest, which causes the corpse to fall on the ground. To your surprise the sword itself is already cleaned of the blood and intestines that would normally come from pulling it out. It must be the mithril.

It was a quick fight, quick enough that when the others came upstairs to look you were already walking to the stairs they had just climbed.

''And, are there any left alive?'' You asked.

''No, one tried to jump onto Gert's back from the hayloft, Gert killed him in retaliation. Another one tried to jump from the stable roof into the snow but broke his neck in the fall. As for the original farmers we found no trace of them. I think they may be buried under the snow pile near the burned out barn. The only thing left here is the cattle. Nothing to special, four cows, a dozen sheep. And a workhorse for the plough. Also a few chicken. Oh, and also the fodder to feed them through the winter. We also found some slaughtered pigs. The men want to take the frozen pig meat with them. But what should we do with the rest of the cattle?''

’’Take the cattle, I shall write a note and leave behind some monetary compensation.’’

It was perhaps the most moral thing to do. After all without proper care the poor animals might starve to death, or freeze. No, they would be far better off with the camp followers than remaining here. And besides that, fresh milk and eggs would be quite welcome.

Still, it would be wrong to leave without leaving some compensation. You wrote down a note explaining what happened and that you had taken the animals with you for their own good. You put in five Greifs as compensation. More than enough to buy some new cattle and to rebuild the farmstead. You also had the remaining firespots put out. And then you moved on.

As it is winter the sun was already beginning to set when you reached the Mozolavian border at about five to six o’clock. It was now time to search for a suitable camping spot.

’’There, it is surrounded on three sides by trees. It would keep us safe from the wind. And I don't’ we’ll be ambushed here.’’ Ehrenfried said.

’’Agreed, we have marched a good distance in a day. Though we will probably slow down now that the roads will be poorer’’ Gert Said.

Afterwards dinner was served in the great tent and a few toast were exchanged. Afterwards, you went to your own bed to rest, but first. It is time to pray. But to which one would you pray to nonight. You turned your book pages to find the appropriate god.

Siegfried der Milvinger, or Sifridus Milves. The ancestor of all Tauteninc tribes, was the one to unite them in the face of the Schwarzherr, and the one to help them migrate south to the warmer climates, this in turn brought them into contact with the Isidorian empire, and although the two people got off on the wrong foot initially the approaching cold and hordes of the Schwarzherr meant that the two would need to fight together or die alone.

Today, the Milvigner, (or the Winghelm after the iconic helmet he wore) Is regarded as the patron god of the various Tautenic-descendant peoples, this in turn makes him perhaps the second most popular god after Isidor, and most certainly the most popular among the rural population for his domain of feasts. In contrast the royal families nearly all have Isidor as their patron god.

Is there anything in particular you would like to pray for?

And so you went, using your bed as a substitute for the prie-dieu and you knelt.

‘’Oro te nunc, domine magne.’’

‘’ut tua mereamur benedictione.’’

’’Nos, fideles tui vasalli, auxilium tuum rogamus.’’

‘’Nos enim adversus incredulos dignos nos in bello exhibebimus.’’

‘’Ad hoc praesta vires necessarias ut valeamus.’’

Meanwhile, down south. Elisonikon, the empire of Mithras

The imperial palace was abyss as per usual, even in the evenings it was as busy as it was during the day. And it was in this business that the courtiers negotiated, governed and schemed.

’’Your imperial majesty, is this course wise? Your position is already weakened by your decisions to call the west for aid.’’

’’What choice did I have? The fleet is still in ruins and the allowing the army suck the countryside dry would ruin the economy’’

’’Besides that, it is not like this city ever contributed anything to the empire. Considering how it is exempt from taxes and military service. The emperor Anastasius thought.

’’The empire presently stands on the edge of ruin, my brother-in-law was captured in battle. His own children are either too young or worthless hedonists. We live in dark times and that means that we most look for solutions anywhere we can.’’ The emperor said.

’’The provinces must recover. At the same time the Mizarians must be halted. And the last thing I need is a brood of usurpers under my nose.’’

’’Besides that, there is no speaking of what they would do with my own children if I am murdered. No, it is either them or us even if it pains me to harm my sister’s offspring. At least she can’t witness it any more.’’

’’My decision is final, Ioannes. I want the children of the previous dynasty and anyone else that might pose a threat to us in a position unable to threaten us.’’

’’Very well, then what should be done?’’

’’Even the children?’’ Ioannes asked.

’’Even the children, old friend, the youngest one is thirteen. Old enough to have his mind on revenge if he so wished. There is no other way, not here’’

’’Shall we make it look like a accident?’’

’’Not necessary, but there should be deniability. Throw one from a bridge. Strangle the other while he is in the brothel. And make sure that you can get their bodies afterwards. I don’t want anything to be left to fate. If their bodies are not brought here I will assume they survived.’’

’’Then I shall make the arrangements. Have a good night, your majesty’’

The emperor did not answer back. He instead walked out to the imperial gardens where the nightly tapestry of stars was still sparkling. Here he could be alone for at least a while. As he tugged his robes tight to ward off the nightly cold.

’’Are there then no good honest men left? Must I engage in these intrigues for the rest of my days? I wish I could go back. Back to the simple life in the provinces and to my vineyards. They say that this city is the centre of intellectual life in the empire. But for every scholar there is a worthless wastrel with an inflated importance. They call me such wonderful names like ‘’provincial’’ and ‘’penny-pincher’’ behind my back, not that those leeches ever contributed to the upkeep of society. I may have been born here, all those years ago. But my heart and soul are in the provinces. There, honest work is still valued and diligence and honesty are virtues. but I shouldn't sulk here. There are still things to do, I should visit my daughters tonight. I should recall my son Alexandros from the western provinces tomorrow. The succession should be secured, because if what the physician said was true then… no, let’s not dwell on that. It shall come when it comes.’’ And so the emperor crossed the gardens into another corridor.

Back to our hero, who has just broken camp

Ehrenfried was right, despite the heavy winds and snow falls. The camp managed to escape relatively unharmed. Of course not everyone has had a warm night but no one has gotten an illness, well, unless you caught the cold. You would have left earlier but the snow fall had delayed the marching by an hour. So it was already nine o’clock. Judging from the position of the sun. You had hoped that the journey would be uneventful for the rest of the time. In retrospect, that was a vain hope.

’’Over there, take a look. That ox-cart is blocking up the road. I think its axle is broken.’’

And as you got closer this indeed seemed to be the case. About ten monks were attempting to put the thing back on. Their cargo was still laid within the cart. Perhaps not the brightest of decisions but oh well.

Should you offer help?

It takes several pieces of wooden plank and some iron nails, but the axle still creaks and turns as the wagon picks up speed again. Unfortunately it seems that it would be slow and the snail’s pace of the wagon frustrates you greatly. It is already late in the winter afternoon when you finally reach the monastery.

’’Reverend brothers, I would like to know what exactly the cargo is now that we have upheld our end of the bargain. You said.

’’Oh come closer, the artefact is finally allowed to leave the chest. But please don’t touch it.’’

And the artefact was held up, uncovered from its thick layers of cloth to serve as its protectors. A statue of a holy figure made out of glass. Fragility as an object. You could still view through it, though the glass distorts the forms that you see.

’’As you can see, it was of the utmost importance that this relic was transported here with the greatest of care. We had honestly nearly lost hope until you arrived’’

Well, it seems that this errand, tedious though it might have been, has been completed. Perhaps it is time to move on or perhaps you should ask for a blessing.

’’Before we leave, reverend brothers. We would like you to perform a church service, for we would like to be blessed for our crusade.’’

’’A reasonable request, save for the fact that our chapel hall is too small to accommodate your army.’’ The prior said

’’Tell your men to arrange themselves in the field over there. I shall tell some of my brothers to prepare the service’’

And so you prepared to do as such. Every man planted his sword into the ground and knelt before the gathered clergy.

The monks made rounds with special flasks of water each time saying: ’’Hac aqua te benedico, ut valeas in tuo sancto certamine.’’ each time, pouring the contents into the metal of the various metals presented before them. This went on for a while, but eventually it was finished.

Silberkralle gained a +2DC bonus against Infidels, heretics and creatures the faith considers abominable.(Vampires, the undead in general, illegal sorcerers etc.

When you got on the road again the journey was uneventful again. The part of Mozolavia where you were travelling through became flatter and more open the further you got. Thankfully, the weather was merciful to you and your fellows so you could march on without too many problems.

As a matter of fact, you had neared the Tauten-Mozolavian border just in time for the new year. Perfectly in time. If all went well you could cross Pallidden(The mountain range separating Tautenland from Castana) when all the snow had melted.

Fluddenmark. The eastern bulwark of the Reich, founded to keep out foreign invasions and to keep the unruly tribes it once had subjugated in line. It was in many ways a predecessor to further expansions to the east.

Unfortunately, in the years after it was founded it slowly began to decline. Even with a forced fusion of the former eastern marches into a single fief it proved to be an impoverished place. Poor in nature due to sandy soil, marshes and swamps as well as the massive woodlands that dominate the area.

And with Mozolavians proving to be a relatively peaceful neighbour, the Tauten Emperor’s simply used Fluddenmark as a way to gain money.

By your granduncle’s time, four different families had held the position of margrave. Most of them were disinterested in actually ruling the place. And some of them never bothered to set foot inside their fiefdoms.

In theory, this would allow the local nobility to thrive due to the lack of central authority. In practice, the soil would prove to be of such poor quality that most became robber-barons, without any better option these men would usually set up illegal toll posts to exhort anyone who passed by. A few of course, managed to escape such an unfortunate life and managed to create a few relatively prosperous holdings.

And as you saw the place with your own eyes, the tales of old showed themselves to be relatively true. An endless alternation of heath, birch forest and marshes. There were very few farms around here. And even fewer castles. The only locals you had really spotted were the shepherds with their sheep and the waterfowl that hadn't gone south.

It is perhaps an impressive sight. And as you trekked ever further on you came across a crossroads in the woods, it was not yet noon but the nearby inn was already open. For the convenience of the travellers the innkeeper had put up a few direction signs to help them to their destination.

Reading the signs to discern your next destination you came to a few conclusions. Continuing on the road would bring you to Elmsburg-am-Flud, the seat of the Margrave and the biggest city in the March. Taking the turn left would bring you to the village of Adlersfeld, nearby to which stood the ancestral castle of the family. Taking a right turn would put you on the road to Goslaren, towards your sister Brünhilde.

Presenting oneself at the court of the local lord would be the most courteous thing to do. Most nobles don’t take kindly to the entry of an army into their fiefs without at least the common decency to explain exactly why they are here. It is therefore the most appropriate thing to do.

You called for Ehrenfried to ask if he had seen or met the present Margrave earlier. ’’I have not, but they say that Johann II, the current Margrave, is an austere and quiet man. Not one to mince words and very strict, he has already put down four minor rebellion’s. And that he has attempted to squeeze this place dry of what little wealth it has by burdening the nobility with heavy taxes. He doesn’t hold tourneys, which is why I never bothered with this place.’’ Ehrenfried explained.

’’I see, and what do you think he shall do when I meet him?’’ You asked

’’Don’t expect him to give you permission to recruit or that he will donate provisions or gold. He’s too stingy for that. He will mostly likely demand your reasons to pass through his lands and then demand that you don’t break anything of value.’’ Ehrenfried said

’’Well, let’s see what we can do.’’

The hall of the margrave is a modest affair. There are no real decorations on the walls, no tapestries or paintings, only pale white plaster meant to hide the brick walls. The flooring too is made of simple birch wood, with no carvings or carpets to be seen. The only real decoration was the banners with the coat of arms of the Margrave on them.

The Margrave himself is a slim man in his fifties, with a neatly trimmed beard and haircut. His brown hair is already starting to grey at his temples. His face is weathered and old, but his eyes still shine and scrutinise the hall with a piercing gaze. His clothes can be said to be as simple as a man of his station can afford. Although they are still of the finest cloth there is little in the way of patterns or jewellery, the only piece he wears is a signet ring on his right hand.

He remained silent as you walked into the hall, even with the announcement of your presence.

When you finally got close enough to make a short bow, the man finally spoke up.

’’I recognize part of your heraldry, yet you are not of this realm. So I would like to-hmm?’’ The chamberlain was busy whispering something into his ear. ’’Adlershorst? Of Greifswald? hmm’’ he grunted.

’’Very well then, young Adlershorst. I would like to know what has brought you here.’’

The Margrave looks at you with a look of disdain and disinterest.

’’Is that it? Is that all that you wished to say? Leave, I give you safe passage for as long as you like! Now go, I have more important things to attend to.’’

For a moment you feel your head heat up from the anger over this perceived slight,, but you decide against making a scene. Only when you turn to leave does your face contort into one of anger, though you manage to cool off by the time you reach the door.

Ehrenfried was waiting in the courtyard with both of your horses.

’’And how did it go?’’ He asked

’’I have never been treated more discourteously! What a worthless man, for too concerned with counting pennies than to treat his peers properly. But at the very least we go our safe passage.’’ you said

’’’Well it's better than nothing.’’ Ehrenfried said

With safe passage through Fluddenmark secure you would have to plan your new destination

Getting out of Fluddenmark is more difficult than you had thought. The small winding roads and bridges over marsh and heath delay you at some times and the occasional blizzard does not help either.

Despite this, when you reached Goslaren the temperatures began to steadily increase over the last few days, heralding the end of winter. And the easing up of the conditions on the road.

The Landgrave of Goslaren holds residence in the city of Ziegenkopf. A mining town in a valley overlooked by the Landgrave’s castle, it is said that the town and castle were built here after the local lord found a stone in the shape of a goat’s head, taking this as good fortune he built his home here. After being passed around for a few generations the present owners, the Landgraves of Goslaren, made it their primary residence.

The mining heritage is still well present here you can see, there are a lot more dwarves here than in Fluddenmark or Greifswald. And the quarries and mineshafts dot the countryside alongside the usual farms, though production is yet to be restarted after the winter break.

The castle itself is made out of a green-greyish stone that most likely is produced in the vicinity of the town, it has a low profile with very little in the way of tall towers or other protruding buildings, clearly a dwarfish influence on the local architecture. There is only one tower which protrudes out of the ground, yet no banner or standard is flown. The Landgrave is not at home.

The Dwarfish influences become even clearer when you are brought downstairs instead of up. When you inquired about this you were told that the great hall is underground.

The hall is quite pleasantly decorated, which takes away from the natural bluntness present in Dwarf or Dwarven-derived architecture. At the end of the hall stands a figure, tall and slim and of the same shade of hair as you and your father, though she takes after her mother in facial features, your elder sister, Brünhilde.

’’Dearest brother, it is good to see you again. Though I am afraid you have arrived too late to meet my father-in-law and my husband. They went on crusade and left last month. I am reigning on their behalf.’’

’’I see, however I did not come to see them, my good sister. I merely halted at your place if residence to see you.’’ You said

’’You are most kind, Albrecht’’

’’My dear sister, I would like to inquire as to your wellbeing. Has Goslaren treated you kind?’’ You asked her.

’’I would like for you to know that it has. My husband is not one to exceed one’s expectations but he does meet these same expectations. He is…’’ Putting a finger near her mouth. ’’Mediocre, in the most kind sense of the word. Dull and unimpressive, but diligent and honest.’’

’’They are a lot alike, father and son. Both share a strong sense of duty, both to their subjects and to their religion.’’ She smiles a bit. ’’But you asked about my wellbeing and in that regard I have not much to complain about. This castle and its court are bit monotone but aside from that I am content with my life’’

The conversation went on for some time. Mostly catching up with the latest details. You told her about all the things that had or are planned to happen in Greifswald, and she in turn told you news from Tautenland.

’’There is a new Emperor on the throne, the previous one has died of a sudden and intense bout of disease. His name is Ludwig and he is rather young. As a matter of fact he has decided not to go on crusade so that he may first consolidate his power. One of his first acts was to abolish trial-by-combat if the accused has been charged with criminal offences. From now on, one may only demand a dual in disputes and for slighted honour. A good decision I must say, justice cannot be administered by letting the guilty party of the hook because they are more capable on the duelling grounds than in the courtroom’’

Well, it seems that your sister has developed a sense of justice. Would you like to say something?

’’I suppose so, idea that a murderer can walk away from a verdict just because he can fight well is morally reprehensible’’ You told your sister

’’I am glad to see that you and I are on the same page in that regard. Many think that he will be a good emperor, one who shall bring a period of quiet serenity to our realm. He is patient and good natured.’’

You stayed a few more days at Ziegenkopf. Resupplying and repairing anything that might need it. When you rode out to go along with your army again your sister waved you farewell from a window in the gatehouse.

’’You have finished the family reunion?’’ Ehrenfried asked

’’Yes, I take you have plotted the course for our next destination?’’

’’Either way we are going through the Imperial estates or the Kaisersgut. It is in concept a massive valley, with many rivers converging upon each other. It is heavily urbanised, and highly fertile. The roads there are most likely excellent. The only real choice is if you wish to go to the imperial court or if you want to go straight down south’’

’’Meeting the Emperor is simply an opportunity I cannot resist. Let us go to his court first. We have some time to kill’’

The Kaisersgut proves itself to be a gentle land if you have ever seen one. It has neither the harsh hills and valleys of Goslaren, nor the unpleasant marshes and heath of Fluddenmark, not even the familiar forests of Greifswald can compare to it. It is a nearly endless pattern of cities, farmland and neatly trimmed forests. This is not the harsh land out east where the wild and unknown are waiting around the corner, instead, this a serene land where peasants and nobles have not much to fear. You suppose that the presence of the imperial court in such a peaceful place has led to a virtuous cycle.

When you finally arrive at the capital at Sternheim there are three things that catch your attention. The first is the great castle overlooking the city like an overseer looks down upon his employees. It has an elegant and imperious flair to it with its halls being decorated with high gaunt towers. The banner with the double headed eagle on it flutters gently in the unusually gentle winter wind. A few kilometres to its east stands the imperial palatinate. In the olden days the main residence of the emperors with few dotted around the country. This one in particular is well maintained and it has a large garden to go along with it. It consists mainly of one long hall with extra rooms added on as time went on. Where it had begun as a hall it had now become a square in form, complete with an inner courtyard.

An impressive sight to behold, is it not? Look at how the castle leaves the city itself in the shadow in the morning and how the palatinate can benefit from the sun rising in the east, while in the afternoon the shadow of the castle falls upon the palatinate. Making it a good summer residence.’’ Karl, a more scholarly member of your army said.

’’I will make certain to encamp the army at a respectable distance. But before I go I would like to know where you are going so I can fetch you if necessary’’ Ehrenfried said.

And you thought Rittersbach was a large city.

Sternheim is on a whole other level. Its walls are built in the same style as its proud castle and the gatehouse could act as its own little fort if the need would arise. You are fortunate enough to enter the city into one of its richer districts as you see men and women in fine clothes walking, talking and working in fine cloth. There was only one real main road for you to follow on horseback, as the other roads appeared to be small winding alleys where you caught the first glimpse of the underclass of the city eagerly betting on a fight between some gamecocks with their money.

It would be easy to get lost in such a big city you’d imagine and so you decided to remain on the route to the riverbanks from where you had a much better overview of the city. You could see that there were a few men hard at work building a new bridge over the river, out of stone no less, large enough that ships could pass under it without the need for a drawbridge.

You brought Wittekind to stop to think things over. You have no idea where you should go next. It's a big city, one which you never visited. Thankfully, you do have your escort with you in case things go awry but that seems unlikely in this part of the city. But from here you could see the various landmarks that were in the city skyline.

The most prominent of these were the great spires of the cathedral that dominated the surrounding buildings. It's massive, and makes the cathedral your father is building look like a mere parish church.

The main other protruding tower that wasn't from a lesser church was a building you guessed was the city hall. It stands to the cathedrals left and is presumably the beating heart of the city government and commerce, with the guildhalls surrounding it.

Is there any place you wish to visit?

The cathedral itself stands proudly in the centre of the city, and the closer you get to it the greater its presence becomes. Much like its temporal counterpart in the castle it is built in an elegant and gaunt style, with large windows and high towers and spires. With many a buttress to support the massive weight of the walls.

Yet it is not the only remarkable thing here in front of the main entry stand the St. Elegast’s square, the patron saint of the city with a statue of said saint in the middle of the square. A rather modest monument compared to the cathedral but a good monument nonetheless.

The carriage, horses and footfolk are coming to and from the paved road in front of the cathedral making it quite busy. You gave the head of the escort the lead of your mount as you dismounted to enter the cathedral.

The inside is quiet, pleasantly so. The high walls and vaults give the place a godly atmosphere. From the windows you can see the stained glass deceptions of a variety of subjects: some contain religious scenes, others various saints and even some that depicted a few emperors who had sponsored the construction.

As it is right now, you are standing in the middle of the nave, the clergy is not currently offering service. Instead, they are busy polishing and cleaning the temple for mass coming sunday.

What would you like to do?

That fellow you just spotted is a bit too suspicious for your tastes. His robes were a bit too flashy to be a monk, and he wasn't wearing a mitre either.

Your suspicions are confirmed once you descend the stairs down to the undercroft as well. The lock on the door leading to the undercroft has been broken. An even more worrying hint that something is amiss. You quietly open the door to enter the undercroft.

It is a low vaulted room with a hard floor. The openness of the room is hindered by the pillars which connect the vaulting to the floor making it difficult for you to see where that man went.

The only thing that you hear is the last footsteps as the door closes. Unfortunately, you do see in which direction he went. You only heard some other door slam shut to your left. Upon taking a closer look there are 5 doors, not counting the one you just came through. Two to your left and two to your right and one in the middle.

Which door do you want to open?
