/qst/ - Quests

You are slime. Slime life is simple. Easy. Sit in glass jar. Food comes in. Other slimes in other jars. Food goes into them. Pale bone slime giants bring food. Good servants. Good life. Easy. Dark. Light. Food. Dark. Light. Food.

Less slimes in other jars. Less food. Jars vanishing. Pale bone slimes moving faster. Loud noises. Red slime in pale bone slime? Pale bone slimes fighting? One pale bone slime very still now. Dark. Still dark. Hungry. Very hungry!

Pale bone slime back! Bring food? Picked up? Food now?

Thrown! Jar broken! Pale bone slime gone, but still pale bone slime here...and hungry. You start with furry part of pale bone slime, always wondered about fur taste. Not taste very good. Bone hard. Grey slime in pale slime good though. Very good...but now you feel...

Odd? Better eat more.

Very odd...

Should you be feeling like this? Should you even be capable of asking that question? You focus on the...corpse. The human corpse. Didn't you used to use a different word? You...really feel strange. You look around the room. Tables. Ma... machines? A corpse, it's head partially resolved, the inside cleaned of brain matter. Another jar on the table opposite of you, a dessicated slime inside. A fallen...brother?

You are a slime, and you are far smarter than you have any right to be. And you feel...

Well done, QM - i was hoping that you’d go ahead after your posts in /qtg/. Based on the votes here, looks like you may have a hit on your hands.

Can we please have one quest where we're not a conflict-evading sneak? Just the one, please. Combat slime sounds way better of a premise over crawling through sewer pipes.

That’s exactly why I picked dangerous
Stealthfags are the worst
Sometimes the optimal route is to just blitz the enemy with overwhelming offense instead of being a stealthsuit wearing shitman

You spend a few minutes testing your new ability, bouncing and jabbing, leaving holes in the walls. Then curiosity takes you and you bounce up to the table, then again to a shelf. A ventilation grate sits there, openings too small for you. Cool air rushes over your body, carrying smells. Humans, and a lot of them. Food smells too, and...small critters. Prey. A few jabs of your spike into the vent to widen a hole and you're in the vents, wiggling along, stopping at each vent opening to peer through.

Cubicles. Offices. A break room? A human stands and talks to a...horned lizard man? Clafk? Words swim into your head hazily. The Clafk sits and wrinkles the narrow slits of his node, tugging on his dress shirt, almost amusingly at contrast with the thick horns that wrap his head and arms.

"Smell is still there. Getting worse. Is there a dead animal in another office?"

"Ugh, I can smell it too."

"Hah, if you can smell it there must be a whole bison rotting somewhere."

"Hey, your sense of smell isn't that much better!"

You wiggle on. A cafeteria, with a human and a pale furred creature in a black robe. The pale creature...a Lurker? It waves a long paw in a lazy circle

"One does not understand the obsession with alcohol. It is a poison to your kind, yes?"

"You really can't get drunk? At all?" The human replies, sipping a soda.

"Our metabolism is quite efficient."

"You're missing out. I know the garden crew keeps a bottle of honest to god moonshine in their shed. I bet that would do it."

You keep moving. You come to a vent grate through which sunlight shines, or at least whatever filters into a grimy back alley. A dumpster sits against a wall, a swarm of ants making steady trips through a hole in it. A furry creature...a raccoon? Sits atop the dumpster. The sound of cars and screeching birds fills the air.

What to do...

> Hop out into the alleyway.
> Snoop into the cafeteria.

Your spike makes quick work of the vent cover, though the noise draws the attention of the raccoon. The feral creature bristles, tail raising into the air. You size it up for a moment, then your gelatinous brain decides the rodent is closer to prey than predator. You make a dramatic leap, spike out for the kill!

You fall several feet short of the dumpster.

The racoons chatters madly and pounces onto you, claws and teeth flailing wildly! It's a fight for your life!

The raccoon lunges, only for your spike to intercept and gouge its paw. The beast keeps swinging and snapping its jaws and you deftly wiggle and squirm backwards, flattening and reshaping your body to avoid each strike until then raccoon's madness runs low and the strikes slow down. You hurl your body forward and knock the creature down, then drive your spike into its chest!

With a heave of its legs the racoon hurls you off and staggers the opposite direction, fleeing for its life toward the busy sidewalk and street at the end of the alleyway. A human gawker is already staring at your glorious display of combat skill, or possibly just two urban pests dueling. Yes, yes, take out your phone and take a photo of your supreme skill, it's alright.

“Pest control? Yeah, there's a feral slime here at...uh...the alley between third and fourth street. I think it just killed a raccoon.”

Hmm.

It's your food and no one else can have it! You pounce, driving the rodent to the ground. A spike to the neck snuffs the life of the creature out and it only takes another moment longer to inhale the entire creature into your body where strong acid sets to work dissolving it. You waddle to the side of the alleyway and relax with a heave, watching the horrified human with amusement.

“Oh god, it just ate the raccoon, I can see the skin peeling off-urghh how close are you?”

Meat and organs separate from bone and fur in your gut. You're about to hack out the hard to digest bits when it occurs to you that maybe they could be useful?

You're halfway through your debate between fur and claws when you see the new human creeping toward you, a weighted net in hand. Oh shit! The panic surges, hits your gut, and a ball of acid, bone and fur launches out of you, catches the net mid throw, and sends it slamming back into the human. Hah! Suck it human!

The angry snaps of arcing electricity fill the air as the human stands up and snarls, a long black baton extending in his hand.

“Alright you piece of shit, the hard way is fine too.”

You don't like the looks of that snapping baton, even if part of you wants to eat it and see what happens. You bounce away from the human menace and see the welcome sight of a sewer entrance big enough for your body to squirm through (barely) but way too small for the cursing human. You squirm down a narrow passage then the electric baton is shoved directly into you.

CRACK-SNAP-SNAP-SNAP-CRACK

“Sewers should take care of the rest.”

All is darkness for a time. There is rushing water, scurrying movements, the squeak of a small creature becoming a meal. You awake in considerable pain, but you do awake which is better than you'd hoped. Your internals adjust, shedding hunks of hardened and dead slime, leaving you considerably reduced in size, but something feels strange.

You take a deep breath. The sparks stop, building up inside. You get distracted by wondering if you actually breathe at all. A mangy rat snarls and lunges at you. The electricity surges out of you in a single SNAP-CRACK and the rat is left stunned on the ground, legs twitching. You slurp it down and start waddling through your new home.

It definitely looks like the classic sewer setup, large man sized tunnels with filthy water in the center and walkways along the edges, smaller sub passages leading off here and there. A pair of baleful eyes regard you from the water for a moment before a bulky mass of scales a dozen times your size swims away.

You are a spiky electric slime! You currently weigh .75kg and have a max size of 1.5kg! You suddenly have stats! What do you do?

Three possible targets present themselves. The first is the smallest, though quite interesting, in the form of a spectral blue mouse, dragging a tattered book with it through the sewer muck. It doesn't look like much of a meal but something tells you it'll be quite tasty.
>>
>>5828563
The second is a fairly pitiful creature, but it carries a backpack of firm round fruits with it, and you could always use more vitamin C.
>>
>>5828573
The last is a spider fungus hybrid of some sort, the mushrooms are probably tastier than the spider, but with some time you can probably dissolve the carapace of the creature as well. At least it's sizable?
>>
>>5828574
Being more spectral and evasive (if we can absorb traits, as we almost did with the raccoon) seems like it would be useful to avoid capture.

It's not all about quantity sometimes. And hey, you've never tried to read, maybe you can? At least you could eat the book.

You find a nice crack in the wall to hide in, think your sneakiest thoughts and gather up as much electrical charge as possible. Then mouse spirit passes by underneath, its book leaving a smooth trail in the grime. You pounce!

The mouse spirit, looks up, lets out a shrill squeak and teleports a step to the left, completely dodging your initial pounce! Your lightning snaps out and sends the mouse tumbling, a yellow sheen filling its blue form. It manages to right itself, its panicked eyes looking not at you, but the book that now teeters on the edge of going into the slimy river of the sewer.

You'll accept nothing less than taking everything! You bounce toward the book, grabbing it in your mouth and giving it a heave away from the water. An indignant squeak from behind you is your only warning to flatten your body as a blue streak wizzes by overhead, shattering stone on impact. Mousey has some spark!

The mouse teleports again, landing on its book and starts desperately flipping through the pages. A magical haze starts to fill the air, better finish this!

Blue light and electric crackle collide, twist, then explode! You slam into a wall, part of your inner jelly splattering as you forcibly flatten against the surface. Still your adversary has it worse, the mouse has crumpled against the wall, an errant twitch the only movement.

You peel yourself off the wall, getting your proper rounded shape back in order and bounce over to your prize, slurping it down. You turn your attention to the definitely battered book the mouse had been carrying and discover that for all your talents, literacy is not among them. Still, the pictures are pretty, and it seems to hum with a bit of energy.

Your stomach gurgles and starts to bubble, that mouse isn't giving you indigestion is it?

You hiccup and a bolt of lightning leaps out and cracks a stone wall. Another hiccup propels you backward, then another sends you rolling. You manage to get a grip on the new power and can feel it building up inside you to new heights!

You bounce back over to the fallen book and flip it up onto your head like a makeshift helmet. You might not be able to read it, but maybe later? Or you could find someone to sell it to? You set off down the sewer path at random.

You're an electric spiky slime and you weigh 1kg with a maximum of 1.5kg!

You yawn impressively, almost losing your book. The sunlight occasionally filtering into the sewers has been replaced by moonlight. You consider going surface side, maybe look for another racoon, but instead you look for a place to rest and hide your treasures.

A few decent options present themselves after a quick look. There's a dank nook where murky water falls through a grate, occasionally bits of edible trash drop on the grate for a few minutes before dissolving, you could grab an easy snack there.

A broken bit of wall that only a slime could squeeze through is another option. It opens to a dusty cellar, though above you is quite noisy. Still, it's definitely very safe.

Last is an odd option, a broken sewer wall leads into an unground groto. It's quite abandoned but there's definitely a presence watching you. It doesn't seem hostile or predatory. Still, other creatures seem to keep their distance.

It takes some doing, but you manage to squeeze yourself through the narrow passageway into the Dusty Cellar. As the name implies a thick layer of dust covers most surfaces. Other than a few ancient cobwebs there's no signs of life in this place, just empty shelves, barrels and dusty metal implements of unknown purpose. Occasionally there is a distant noise from above followed by a gentle shower of dust drifting from the ceiling. At the far end of the room is the start of a spiral staircase leading upward.

You find a cozy barrel, bring yourself and the grimoire into it, and settle in for some well deserved rest. Do slimes sleep? Do slimes dream? You ponder the question for a moment, then promptly fall asleep.

You awake to a particularly loud thump from above you. Your empty stomach gurgles. You're going to need to find some food, but there's a nagging feeling that you need something else. A purpose.

> Revenge! Somewhere a human used you and your kind for experiments, then left you to die! Find that human and make them pay!

Curiosity is stronger than hunger at the moment and you bounce over to the spiral staircase leading out of the Dusty Cellar. It leads upward to yet another cellar, only marginally less dusty than the first. This one however has an ajar door that you bounce over to and have a listen at. The loud noises from before come into focus as the excited babble of many humans. Occasionally one voice would rise above the rest, then the rest would roar in response.

You creep closer, following a trail of food smells. Coming to the door you peer around it and find a vast feast laid out before you! Platters stacked high with steaming foods! Roasted birds, heaps of potatoes, wheels of cheese, pots of soup! Cakes, pies, casseroles! So much that large amounts are scattered across the floor, carelessly lost by the dozens of humans!

Well humanoids, a decent number of horned lizard men and pale furred and hooded folk are there too. Robes, pointy hats and staves are in abundance, as are any number of tasty looking exotic creatures perched on shoulders. Humanoids meander to and fro, eating, talking, spilling drinks on table clothes and harrassing the serving staff who move briskly through double doors to a kitchen and out a larger entrance to the rest of this place.

> Slip under the table cloth of the largest table and meander along eating scraps.

You bide your time, then shoot out from the doorway just as a large cake goes crashing to the floor, turning all eyes in the room. Under the table is a slime paradise! You ooze along slurping up half eaten chunks of meat, mopping up spilled soup and inhaling chunks of bread and vegetables. You leave behind a trail of polished clean bones and floor as your stomach steadily fills up.

You're on your third half eaten slice of cake when you literally bump into the nose of a flaming cat thing gnawing on a chicken leg. It jumps back hissing at you, flames bristling.

You ooze backward, spike just below the surface of your body. Electricity builds up in you. You and the cat pace around each other slowly. Your acid churns on a bone, slowly eating away the outer shell until the juicy marrow inside is released. The cat narrows its eyes, one paw half raised.

It laughs at you, then speaks!?

“Belltower, the night after tomorrow. Be there.” It flicks its tail, snout raised into the air. “And get out of my territory, find your own place to scavenge.”

You are confused to say the least. A meeting at a belltower? And apparently you're being kicked out! Rude! You'd complain, if you had any capacity for speech.

Your slimy form deflates in what you hope is the ultimate expression of sorrow, but unfortunately your opposite number is a cat. You settle for a burbling noise and a wave before bouncing away. You snag one last drumstick, slip back through the cellar and make your way back to the Dusty Cellar where you take the time to completely dissolve the bone.

> You've definitely put on some weight! You're a 1.75kg lightning spike slime at max weight!

You've just barely wiggled part of your body through the entrance to the sewer when you hear quite the calamity approaching. You peer down the tunnel and see a glowing mushroom cap on legs running your way! Behind her is a pair of humans with weapons.

ZAAAP!

The bolt of lightning slams into the first human and he jerks away, body spasming, his short sword clattering to the sewer floor. His partner skids to a halt, shouting, iron chain spinning in his grasp. The mushroom swivels, expression blank, then kneels. The green cap pulses and glows for a moment, then things get very bright.

Very very bright.

You have a problem.

Swords are long. Too long! And sharp! And pointy! None of this is a concern to your insides of course, being a slurry of nutrient reserve, acid and however the hell your ambient neural network func-ow! The end of the sword jabs into, then through the outer membrane of your body. You keep your cool, barely, avoiding a panicked flailing motion that would have just turned a stab into a slice and wounded you pretty badly.

Instead you carefully, ignoring your burbling innards becoming outers, pull the sword point back into your body, then stretch and flatten a bit to accommodate the length of the blade, sealing up your injuries in the process. Then you wait, letting your acid churn on the blade. You can crack open a bone in about minute, how hard could steel or iron be?

Somewhat disappointingly, pretty hard. The metal definitely has an etched look to when you get bored and spit it out, but you're probably going to need to work on this for a while. You stash it in the cellar and ponder your next move.

You're a 1.5kg/1.75kg spikey lightning slime! That could have gone worse, and almost did! It's evening! Shadows are long, and humanoids are scarce on the surface!

There is an awkward pause of the universe, or perhaps just a prolonged bit of indigestion from your recent high iron diet that wonders why exactly in a world with cars, laboratories and stun batons there's a bloke with a sword. The sword itself offers up that perhaps it's been misunderstood, maybe it's more of a overly large hunting knife, the sort used by a thug more as a tool of intimidation than an actual weapon.

You decide the sword, or hunting knife, or whatever is talking entirely too much and devour it instead. Much simpler!

You wrangle the bladed weapon of ambiguous nature into your body once more and really crank your acid onto it. The weapon shatters into shards under your mighty stomach wrath. With the metal reduced to shrapnel you can actually carry the blade bits with you, shouldn't be long now before you actually fully consume it! Or you could use the bits as a particularly nasty single attack, if you somehow get into trouble.

You sproing along the sewers merrily, taking note of points of interest as dusk light filters down through the sewer grates. There's the Grotto of course, a giant rat corpse sits in it at the moment, with one leg twitching as a vivid green vapor trails from it. Even your appetite retreats, for the moment anyway.

Moving away from the Grotto you spot a handful of rats fleeing down into a tunnel, too small for most creatures, but not for you. A nice rat pie does sound tasty, but you keep moving along, you can dive the Rat Tunnels at your leisure.

A delightful smell of rot fills your non-existent nostrils and you follow it until you find a sewer grate pouring out into a large Garbage Dump, forming a fetid river between mounds of old appliances, rusted out cars, and smashed tvs.

You note the location and keep exploring. Another maze of sewer later you feel cool breeze and squirm up a narrow passageway to find trees, bushes and a narrow concrete path. A park? An empty set of swings twists in the wind.

That's enough poking around for now, time to hunt for dinner.

You jump into the sewer flow and let the foul water wash you out into the Dump, filtering a bit of organic material through your body as you go. You swim up onto a rusted out washing machine, then use the door to spring up further. You meander up the heap of scrap, pulling in screws, nuts and bolts to your body as you go, you're starting to get a taste for iron.

You reach the top of the heap and hunker down, scanning for likely prey. The first thing that pops out is a scutting red eyed creature on metal legs. It paces restlessly about, picking up objects at random and bathing them in a red light from its eye.
>>
>>5846131
Next is a sad looking mushroom creature waddling along, occasionally stopping to dig a hole and press something into it. It looks like the picture of easy prey, at least until a bird swoops down on it and provokes a burst of hazy spores. Within moments the bird is crashing to the ground. The mushroom creature devours it messily, and live.
>>
>>5846132
Last is a sort rat thing that burrows in and out of the heap, hauling bits of debris down tunnels. A long blade like tail trails behind it, more than once you watch the rat saw a larger object in two with it before taking both down a tunnel.

The crab’s eye opens wide, then snaps shut just as the junkyard is cast into stark tones of black and white by the SNAP-TAT-TAT-CRACK of your lightning hurling the creature down the hill. Other critters scurry away in a panic but the crab stands back up, its eye flickering from red to blue erratically, claws snapping at the air around it blindly. An old glass bottle tumbles down next to the crab and it whips around, a burst of light flashing from a claw and shattering it.

You advance forward, but the moment you make noise by landing on a bit of metal the crab’s laser claw whips around and starts firing! Time to move!

For a lesser creature, like a lion, an elephant, or those silly bone filled humans a barrage of lasers slamming into the hillside might be a serious threat to their life. To a slime though it’s practically child’s play, even if the robot wasn’t glitching and spasming after your electric blast you could still wiggle, squirm, bounce and squish your way around every shot, and the crab can’t seem to grasp the idea that the sounds you make as you bounce downhill are only where you were, not where you are. The growing avalanche of distractions just makes the crab’s wild firing more inaccurate, and adds more to the mess falling downhill.

You bound from tumbling bottles to a sliding screen door, then spot the perfect weapon, two hundred pounds of beaten up refrigerator. You just need to give it a little pop into the air! You throw yourself into the path of the appliance and give it a mighty heave!

By which you mean the refrigerator clobbers you, then flips both you and it into the air. You cling to the fridge door as it spins wildly, then it slams into the crab, its wild beeping and flashing eye joining the chaos. There's a tumble of dirt, metal, crab, and you, then everything slams to a halt, with you, the crab, and an ancient tv dinner all tumbled together inside the fridge.

“Battlefield Scavenger Unit 31415926 Warranty is voided.” A pleasant female voice emits from the crab briefly before its eyelight flicks off. A bit of salisbury steak drips onto it then you engulf the entire thing. Digesting robot crab is an interesting experience to be sure.

Bits of rubber and casing give away first, followed by rusted outer bits. Legs, the eye, and internals all come loose as your acid works furiously to reduce the softest parts of the crab to food, then you make a pleasant surprise! There's actually fleshy meat under the carapace! You greedily devour it and turn your attention to the rest of the device... creature?

Battery, circuitry, laser weapon, it all nestles into your gut and sizzles away, along with the remains of the sword. You nestle into the fridge and sleep on your meal. Then you dream...

What happens when a slime learns to eat metal in a world of robots and steel girders? Greatness happens.

Acid upgrade? Hell yeah.
Good luck restraining us when we can dissolve organic AND inorganic materials.

You dream of metal. Of a body with both the strength of steel and the malleability of ooze, of being a living weapon capable of forming deadly weapons and unstoppable shields from your own body. Only the most deadly weapons slow you down, but the modern world is so plentiful with metal that you can pull into yourself that they scarcely matter. You are free, like no slime has ever been.

When you awake, you’ve taken the first step toward that dream.

> Quicksilver Form gained! You can freely eat metal to replenish lost mass and your outer body is significantly tougher! And you’re shiny!
> Flechet gained! You can launch razor sharp barbs of your metallic body at your foes!

You amuse yourself for a few minutes by launching spikes into the sides of the fridge interior and consuming them. Then you gnaw your way through the fridge and pop out into the morning sun.

Fucking excellent synergy with our default Spike ability. And maybe with electricity, too. We can just sit on top of a generator and supercharge ourselves I bet.

A shadow falls over you. “Hello little one.” A voice rumbles. A massive woody hand reaches down for you. You look up and see something big. Panic hits hard.

> ZAPPP!

Your lightning slams into the hand. A leaf on it bursts into flame, but the looming figure doesn’t seem to be bothered.

> Flechets! Fire away!

The spikes thud into the wood and...fall off!? You bounce away frantically but the hand snatches you up casually lifting you face to face with a pair of ancient eyes shaded by leaves and vines.

> Bite him! Spike him!

You vigorously gnaw on the woody finger closest to you. It doesn’t seem to do much.

> Calm down?

There is a rumble from the great lurking creature of wood and vine that might be laughter.

“We have much to speak of little one. It has been nearly a hundred years since I have met another like myself. Let us speak of the being you will meet at the belltower.”

> END CHAPTER ONE: LITTLE SLIME IN THE BIG CITY

Alright, that's a wrap for now. With the holidays coming up my energy levels are definitely hitting low ebb and my time is going to absolutely evaporate, so alas, we will not be able to continue until the new year. Thanks for reading and hopefully this has been an enjoyable romp!
